Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000321- Unicode objects will no longer raise an exception when being
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000322 compared equal or unequal to a string and a UnicodeDecodeError
323 exception occurs, e.g. as result of a decoding failure.
Neal Norwitz56423e52006-08-13 18:11:08 +0000324
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000325 Instead, the equal (==) and unequal (!=) comparison operators will
326 now issue a UnicodeWarning and interpret the two objects as
327 unequal. The UnicodeWarning can be filtered as desired using
328 the warning framework, e.g. silenced completely, turned into an
329 exception, logged, etc.
330
331 Note that compare operators other than equal and unequal will still
332 raise UnicodeDecodeError exceptions as they've always done.
Neal Norwitz8a87f5d2006-08-12 17:03:09 +0000333
Marc-André Lemburg757ea272006-08-14 11:44:34 +0000334- Fix segfault when doing string formatting on subclasses of long.

337 with new-style classes.
338
339- Fix bug related to __len__ functions returning negative values with
340 classic classes.
341
342- Patch #1538606, Fix __index__() clipping. There were some problems
343 discovered with the API and how integers that didn't fit into Py_ssize_t
344 were handled. This patch attempts to provide enough alternatives
345 to effectively use __index__.

354
Thomas Heller74d36f02006-08-04 18:17:40 +0000355- On Windows, the PyErr_Warn function is now exported from
356 the Python dll again.
357
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000358- Bug #1191458: tracing over for loops now produces a line event
359 on each iteration. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc
360 magic number. This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5c1
361 will be regenerated.
362
Neal Norwitz0cbd8052006-08-04 05:09:28 +0000363- Bug #1333982: string/number constants were inappropriately stored

483Core and builtins
484-----------------
485
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000486- _PyWeakref_GetWeakrefCount() now returns a Py_ssize_t; it previously

488
Neal Norwitzf71ec5a2006-07-30 06:57:04 +0000489- Bug #1515471: string.replace() accepts character buffers again.
490
Neal Norwitz07aadb12006-07-30 06:55:48 +0000491- Add PyErr_WarnEx() so C code can pass the stacklevel to warnings.warn().
492 This provides the proper warning for struct.pack().
493 PyErr_Warn() is now deprecated in favor of PyErr_WarnEx().
494
Neal Norwitz0d62a062006-07-30 06:53:31 +0000495- Patch #1531113: Fix augmented assignment with yield expressions.
496 Also fix a SystemError when trying to assign to yield expressions.
497
Phillip J. Ebyf7575d02006-07-28 21:12:07 +0000498- Bug #1529871: The speed enhancement patch #921466 broke Python's compliance
499 with PEP 302. This was fixed by adding an ``imp.NullImporter`` type that is
500 used in ``sys.path_importer_cache`` to cache non-directory paths and avoid
501 excessive filesystem operations during imports.
502
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +0000503- Bug #1521947: When checking for overflow, ``PyOS_strtol()`` used some
504 operations on signed longs that are formally undefined by C.
505 Unfortunately, at least one compiler now cares about that, so complicated
506 the code to make that compiler happy again.
507
Martin v. Löwis982e9fe2006-07-24 12:54:17 +0000508- Bug #1524310: Properly report errors from FindNextFile in os.listdir.

519
Georg Brandl9dceedb2006-07-12 15:31:17 +0000520- Patch #1521179: Python now accepts the standard options ``--help`` and

522
Andrew M. Kuchling93c928e2006-07-26 17:19:39 +0000523- Bug #1520864: unpacking singleton tuples in a 'for' loop (for x, in) works
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000524 again. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc magic number.
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000525 This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5b3 will be regenerated.

Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000527- Bug #1524317: Compiling Python ``--without-threads`` failed.
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000528 The Python core compiles again, and, in a build without threads, the

540
Georg Brandl07fec3a2006-08-01 18:49:24 +0000541- os.urandom no longer masks unrelated exceptions like SystemExit or

546
Georg Brandle34ac7c2006-07-30 11:07:23 +0000547- Bug #1002398: The documentation for os.path.sameopenfile now correctly

549
Tim Peterscbdd3502006-09-05 01:47:53 +0000550- The renaming of the xml package to xmlcore, and the import hackery done

555 docstrings correctly as it did in Python 2.4.
556
Tim Peters6f681472006-07-27 23:44:37 +0000557- Bug #1529297: The rewrite of doctest for Python 2.4 unintentionally
558 lost that tests are sorted by name before being run. This rarely
559 matters for well-written tests, but can create baffling symptoms if
560 side effects from one test to the next affect outcomes. ``DocTestFinder``

562
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000563- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0, and is now kept

580
Martin v. Löwis426f4a12006-07-18 17:46:31 +0000581- Patch #1524429: Use repr() instead of backticks in Tkinter again.
582
Brett Cannoncaebe222006-07-18 04:41:36 +0000583- Bug #1520914: Change time.strftime() to accept a zero for any position in its
584 argument tuple. For arguments where zero is illegal, the value is forced to
585 the minimum value that is correct. This is to support an undocumented but
586 common way people used to fill in inconsequential information in the time
587 tuple pre-2.4.
588
Bob Ippolito5ea4bf12006-07-15 16:53:15 +0000589- Patch #1220874: Update the binhex module for Mach-O.
590
Barry Warsawb110bad2006-07-21 14:51:07 +0000591- The email package has improved RFC 2231 support, specifically for
592 recognizing the difference between encoded (name*0*=<blah>) and non-encoded
593 (name*0=<blah>) parameter continuations. This may change the types of
594 values returned from email.message.Message.get_param() and friends.
595 Specifically in some cases where non-encoded continuations were used,
596 get_param() used to return a 3-tuple of (None, None, string) whereas now it
597 will just return the string (since non-encoded continuations don't have
598 charset and language parts).
599
600 Also, whereas % values were decoded in all parameter continuations, they are
601 now only decoded in encoded parameter parts.
602
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +0000603- Bug #1517990: IDLE keybindings on MacOS X now work correctly
604
605- Bug #1517996: IDLE now longer shows the default Tk menu when a
606 path browser, class browser or debugger is the frontmost window on MacOS X
607
Barry Warsaw00decd72006-07-27 23:43:15 +0000608- Patch #1520294: Support for getset and member descriptors in types.py,
609 inspect.py, and pydoc.py. Specifically, this allows for querying the type
610 of an object against these built-in types and more importantly, for getting
611 their docstrings printed in the interactive interpreter's help() function.

623
Tim Peters9cab5932006-07-28 00:30:00 +0000624- The ``__reduce__()`` method of the new ``collections.defaultdict`` had

634 arrays, without the need to check the array size before.
635
Thomas Heller6e1ad2e2006-07-13 17:05:13 +0000636- Bug #1521375: When the code in ctypes.util.find_library was
Andrew M. Kuchlingb7eca832006-07-13 17:37:26 +0000637 run with root privileges, it could overwrite or delete
Thomas Heller2bdf29e2006-07-13 17:01:14 +0000638 /dev/null in certain cases; this is now fixed.
639
Thomas Heller47d7a062006-07-12 08:43:47 +0000640- Bug #1467450: On Mac OS X 10.3, RTLD_GLOBAL is now used as the

652
Brett Cannonf23ad3d2006-07-25 17:32:20 +0000653Tests
654-----
655
656- Bug #1501330: Change test_ossaudiodev to be much more tolerant in terms of
657 how long the test file should take to play. Now accepts taking 2.93 secs
658 (exact time) +/- 10% instead of the hard-coded 3.1 sec.
659
Georg Brandl4793aa32006-07-28 18:31:39 +0000660- Patch #1529686: The standard tests ``test_defaultdict``, ``test_iterlen``,
661 ``test_uuid`` and ``test_email_codecs`` didn't actually run any tests when

670---
671
672- PythonLauncher now works correctly when the path to the script contains
673 characters that are treated specially by the shell (such as quotes).
674
675- Bug #1527397: PythonLauncher now launches scripts with the working directory
676 set to the directory that contains the script instead of the user home
Tim Peters4643c2f2006-08-10 22:45:34 +0000677 directory. That latter was an implementation accident and not what users

690 again evaluates to a int object, not a long.
691
Neil Schemenauer0e07b602006-07-09 16:16:34 +0000692- Bug #1501934: The scope of global variables that are locally assigned
693 using augmented assignment is now correctly determined.
694
Martin v. Löwisd5cfa542006-07-03 13:47:40 +0000695- Bug #927248: Recursive method-wrapper objects can now safely

Hye-Shik Change6a1cb92006-06-23 21:16:18 +0000701- Bug #1511381: codec_getstreamcodec() in codec.c is corrected to
702 omit a default "error" argument for NULL pointer. This allows
703 the parser to take a codec from cjkcodecs again.
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +0000704
Neal Norwitzfb48afa2006-07-08 05:31:37 +0000705- Bug #1519018: 'as' is now validated properly in import statements.
706
Neal Norwitz28746ab2006-07-09 22:14:42 +0000707- On 64 bit systems, int literals that use less than 64 bits are
708 now ints rather than longs.
709
Neal Norwitzed657552006-07-10 00:04:44 +0000710- Bug #1512814, Fix incorrect lineno's when code at module scope
711 started after line 256.
712
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +0000713- New function ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dict mapping thread
714 id to topmost thread stack frame. This is for expert use, and is
715 especially useful for debugging application deadlocks. The functionality
716 was previously available in Fazal Majid's ``threadframe`` extension
717 module, but it wasn't possible to do this in a wholly threadsafe way from
718 an extension.

735
Thomas Woutersadd19112006-07-05 11:03:49 +0000736- string.Template() now correctly handles tuple-values. Previously,
737 multi-value tuples would raise an exception and single-value tuples would
738 be treated as the value they contain, instead.
739
Martin v. Löwisede77f52006-07-03 13:01:35 +0000740- Bug #822974: Honor timeout in telnetlib.{expect,read_until}

765
Brett Cannon53ab5b72006-06-22 16:49:14 +0000766- Bug #1510580: The 'warnings' module improperly required that a Warning
767 category be either a types.ClassType and a subclass of Warning. The proper
768 check is just that it is a subclass with Warning as the documentation states.
769
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +0000770- The compiler module now correctly compiles the new try-except-finally
771 statement (bug #1509132).
772

777
Gerhard Häring762fbd32006-07-02 17:48:30 +0000778- The sqlite3 module did cut off data from the SQLite database at the first

780 now.
781
Neal Norwitz0f8b31a2006-06-28 06:28:31 +0000782Extension Modules
783-----------------
784
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000785- #1494314: Fix a regression with high-numbered sockets in 2.4.3. This
786 means that select() on sockets > FD_SETSIZE (typically 1024) work again.
787 The patch makes sockets use poll() internally where available.
Anthony Baxter93ab5fa2006-07-11 02:04:09 +0000788
Thomas Hellerb9cb84f2006-07-10 11:17:37 +0000789- Assigning None to pointer type fields in ctypes structures possible
790 overwrote the wrong fields, this is fixed now.
791
792- Fixed a segfault in _ctypes when ctypes.wintypes were imported
793 on non-Windows platforms.
794
795- Bug #1518190: The ctypes.c_void_p constructor now accepts any
796 integer or long, without range checking.
797
798- Patch #1517790: It is now possible to use custom objects in the ctypes
799 foreign function argtypes sequence as long as they provide a from_param
800 method, no longer is it required that the object is a ctypes type.
801
802- The '_ctypes' extension module now works when Python is configured
803 with the --without-threads option.
804
Martin v. Löwisee1e06d2006-07-02 18:44:00 +0000805- Bug #1513646: os.access on Windows now correctly determines write

820
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +0000821- 'configure' now detects the zlib library the same way as distutils.
Thomas Woutersfc34f6c2006-07-06 10:48:28 +0000822 Previously, the slight difference could cause compilation errors of the
823 'zlib' module on systems with more than one version of zlib.
824
Martin v. Löwis4cbd05c2006-07-06 07:05:21 +0000825- The MSI compileall step was fixed to also support a TARGETDIR
826 with spaces in it.
827
Martin v. Löwis88ef6372006-07-06 06:55:58 +0000828- Bug #1517388: sqlite3.dll is now installed on Windows independent
829 of Tcl/Tk.
830
Neal Norwitzc315a0f2006-06-27 04:28:56 +0000831- Bug #1513032: 'make install' failed on FreeBSD 5.3 due to lib-old

857-----------------
858
Georg Brandla56b9152006-06-19 06:35:54 +0000859- Patch #1507676: Error messages returned by invalid abstract object operations
860 (such as iterating over an integer) have been improved and now include the
861 type of the offending object to help with debugging.
862
Brett Cannonea3912b2006-06-13 21:46:41 +0000863- Bug #992017: A classic class that defined a __coerce__() method that returned
864 its arguments swapped would infinitely recurse and segfault the interpreter.
865
Neal Norwitz909eb122006-06-12 02:13:21 +0000866- Fix the socket tests so they can be run concurrently.
867
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +0000868- Removed 5 integers from C frame objects (PyFrameObject).
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +0000869 f_nlocals, f_ncells, f_nfreevars, f_stack_size, f_restricted.
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +0000870
Brett Cannon22565aa2006-06-09 22:31:23 +0000871- Bug #532646: object.__call__() will continue looking for the __call__
872 attribute on objects until one without one is found. This leads to recursion
873 when you take a class and set its __call__ attribute to an instance of the
874 class. Originally fixed for classic classes, but this fix is for new-style.
875 Removes the infinite_rec_3 crasher.
876
Georg Brandl24250812006-06-09 18:45:48 +0000877- The string and unicode methods startswith() and endswith() now accept
878 a tuple of prefixes/suffixes to look for. Implements RFE #1491485.
879
Brett Cannonde3b0522006-06-08 17:00:45 +0000880- Buffer objects, at the C level, never used the char buffer
881 implementation even when the char buffer for the wrapped object was
882 explicitly requested (originally returned the read or write buffer).
883 Now a TypeError is raised if the char buffer is not present but is
884 requested.
885
Georg Brandlddbaa662006-06-04 21:56:52 +0000886- Patch #1346214: Statements like "if 0: suite" are now again optimized
887 away like they were in Python 2.4.
888
Georg Brandlb7c8f542006-05-27 12:30:25 +0000889- Builtin exceptions are now full-blown new-style classes instead of
890 instances pretending to be classes, which speeds up exception handling
891 by about 80% in comparison to 2.5a2.
892
Martin v. Löwisd004fc82006-05-27 08:36:52 +0000893- Patch #1494554: Update unicodedata.numeric and unicode.isnumeric to
894 Unicode 4.1.
895
Georg Brandlf4ef1162006-05-26 18:03:31 +0000896- Patch #921466: sys.path_importer_cache is now used to cache valid and
897 invalid file paths for the built-in import machinery which leads to
898 fewer open calls on startup.
899
Tim Peters696cf432006-05-24 21:10:40 +0000900- Patch #1442927: ``long(str, base)`` is now up to 6x faster for non-power-
901 of-2 bases. The largest speedup is for inputs with about 1000 decimal
902 digits. Conversion from non-power-of-2 bases remains quadratic-time in
903 the number of input digits (it was and remains linear-time for bases
904 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32).
905
Tim Petersb713ec22006-05-23 18:45:30 +0000906- Bug #1334662: ``int(string, base)`` could deliver a wrong answer
907 when ``base`` was not 2, 4, 8, 10, 16 or 32, and ``string`` represented
908 an integer close to ``sys.maxint``. This was repaired by patch
909 #1335972, which also gives a nice speedup.
910
Richard Jonescebbefc2006-05-23 18:28:17 +0000911- Patch #1337051: reduced size of frame objects.
912
913- PyErr_NewException now accepts a tuple of base classes as its
914 "base" parameter.
915
Richard Jones7c88dcc2006-05-23 10:37:38 +0000916- Patch #876206: function call speedup by retaining allocated frame
917 objects.
918
Georg Brandl7b90e162006-05-18 07:01:27 +0000919- Bug #1462152: file() now checks more thoroughly for invalid mode
920 strings and removes a possible "U" before passing the mode to the
921 C library function.
922

926
Martin v. Löwis879768d2006-05-11 13:28:43 +0000927- WindowsError now has two error code attributes: errno, which carries
928 the error values from errno.h, and winerror, which carries the error
929 values from winerror.h. Previous versions put the winerror.h values
930 (from GetLastError()) into the errno attribute.
931

935
Tim Peters44bd9862006-06-01 13:49:23 +0000936- Patch #1497053 & bug #1275608: Exceptions occurring in ``__eq__()``
937 methods were always silently ignored by dictionaries when comparing keys.
938 They are now passed through (except when using the C API function
939 ``PyDict_GetItem()``, whose semantics did not change).
940
941- Bug #1456209: In some obscure cases it was possible for a class with a
942 custom ``__eq__()`` method to confuse dict internals when class instances
943 were used as a dict's keys and the ``__eq__()`` method mutated the dict.
944 No, you don't have any code that did this ;-)

974 (up to the system limit of 32K characters).
975
976- Use Win32 API to implement os.{access,chdir,chmod,mkdir,remove,rename,rmdir,utime}.
977 As a result, these functions now raise WindowsError instead of OSError.
978
Tim Peters7a822da2006-05-25 21:50:17 +0000979- ``time.clock()`` on Win64 should use the high-performance Windows

981 Windows platforms).
982
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +0000983- Calling Tk_Init twice is refused if the first call failed as that

1002
Gregory P. Smithff7d9912006-06-08 05:17:08 +00001003- bsddb: the bsddb.dbtables Modify method now raises the proper error and

1041
Tim Peters43898b42006-06-14 04:09:25 +00001042- ``difflib``'s ``SequenceMatcher.get_matching_blocks()`` was changed to
1043 guarantee that adjacent triples in the return list always describe
1044 non-adjacent blocks. Previously, a pair of matching blocks could end
1045 up being described by multiple adjacent triples that formed a partition
1046 of the matching pair.

1063 ``doctest.is_private()`` function, both deprecated in 2.4, were removed.
Tim Petersbf0400a2006-06-05 01:43:03 +00001064
Martin v. Löwis3f767792006-06-04 19:36:28 +00001065- Patch #1359618: Speed up charmap encoder by using a trie structure
1066 for lookup.
1067
Tim Petersd609b1a2006-06-02 23:22:51 +00001068- The functions in the ``pprint`` module now sort dictionaries by key
1069 before computing the display. Before 2.5, ``pprint`` sorted a dictionary
1070 if and only if its display required more than one line, although that
1071 wasn't documented. The new behavior increases predictability; e.g.,
1072 using ``pprint.pprint(a_dict)`` in a doctest is now reliable.

1150-----------------
1151
Thomas Heller1b046642006-04-18 18:51:06 +00001152- Bug #1465834: 'bdist_wininst preinstall script support' was fixed
1153 by converting these apis from macros into exported functions again:
1154
1155 PyParser_SimpleParseFile PyParser_SimpleParseString PyRun_AnyFile
1156 PyRun_AnyFileEx PyRun_AnyFileFlags PyRun_File PyRun_FileEx

1160
Martin v. Löwis45294a92006-04-18 06:24:08 +00001161- Under COUNT_ALLOCS, types are not necessarily immortal anymore.
1162
Martin v. Löwis19ab6c92006-04-16 18:55:50 +00001163- All uses of PyStructSequence_InitType have been changed to initialize
1164 the type objects only once, even if the interpreter is initialized
1165 multiple times.
1166
Neal Norwitz61546162006-04-14 05:20:28 +00001167- Bug #1454485, array.array('u') could crash the interpreter. This was
1168 due to PyArgs_ParseTuple(args, 'u#', ...) trying to convert buffers (strings)
1169 to unicode when it didn't make sense. 'u#' now requires a unicode string.
1170
1171- Py_UNICODE is unsigned. It was always documented as unsigned, but
1172 due to a bug had a signed value in previous versions.
1173
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001174- Patch #837242: ``id()`` of any Python object always gives a positive
1175 number now, which might be a long integer. ``PyLong_FromVoidPtr`` and
1176 ``PyLong_AsVoidPtr`` have been changed accordingly. Note that it has
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001177 never been correct to implement a ``__hash()__`` method that returns the
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001178 ``id()`` of an object:
Martin v. Löwis0bc2ab92006-04-10 20:28:17 +00001179
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001180 def __hash__(self):
1181 return id(self) # WRONG
1182
1183 because a hash result must be a (short) Python int but it was always
1184 possible for ``id()`` to return a Python long. However, because ``id()``
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001185 could return negative values before, on a 32-bit box an ``id()`` result
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001186 was always usable as a hash value before this patch. That's no longer
1187 necessarily so.
1188
1189- Python on OS X 10.3 and above now uses dlopen() (via dynload_shlib.c)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001190 to load extension modules and now provides the dl module. As a result,
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001191 sys.setdlopenflags() now works correctly on these systems. (SF patch
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001192 #1454844)
1193
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001194- Patch #1463867: enhanced garbage collection to allow cleanup of cycles
1195 involving generators that have paused outside of any ``try`` or ``with``
1196 blocks. (In 2.5a1, a paused generator that was part of a reference
1197 cycle could not be garbage collected, regardless of whether it was
1198 paused in a ``try`` or ``with`` block.)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001199

1205
Georg Brandlbbfe4fa2006-04-11 06:47:43 +00001206- Bug #1467952: os.listdir() now correctly raises an error if readdir()
1207 fails with an error condition.
1208
Gregory P. Smith3adc4aa2006-04-13 19:19:01 +00001209- Fixed bsddb.db.DBError derived exceptions so they can be unpickled.

1211- Bug #1117761: bsddb.*open() no longer raises an exception when using
1212 the cachesize parameter.
1213
1214- Bug #1149413: bsddb.*open() no longer raises an exception when using
1215 a temporary db (file=None) with the 'n' flag to truncate on open.
1216
1217- Bug #1332852: bsddb module minimum BerkeleyDB version raised to 3.3
1218 as older versions cause excessive test failures.

1228 abusing errno.

Tim Peters711bf302006-04-25 03:31:36 +00001230- Patch #1475231: ``doctest`` has a new ``SKIP`` option, which causes
1231 a doctest to be skipped (the code is not run, and the expected output
1232 or exception is ignored).
1233

1244
Phillip J. Eby17a35f92006-04-18 16:45:14 +00001245- The pydoc module now supports documenting packages contained in
1246 .zip or .egg files.
1247
1248- The pkgutil module now has several new utility functions, such
1249 as ``walk_packages()`` to support working with packages that are either
1250 in the filesystem or zip files.
1251
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001252- The mailbox module can now modify and delete messages from

1313
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001314- The test_contextlib test in 2.5a1 wasn't actually run unless you ran
1315 it separately and by hand. It also wasn't cleaning up its changes to
1316 the current Decimal context.
1317
Thomas Woutersabd08882006-04-26 15:53:30 +00001318- regrtest.py now has a -M option to run tests that test the new limits of
1319 containers, on 64-bit architectures. Running these tests is only sensible
1320 on 64-bit machines with more than two gigabytes of memory. The argument
1321 passed is the maximum amount of memory for the tests to use.

Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00001347Core and builtins
1348-----------------
1349
Nick Coghlan43832302006-04-23 17:04:07 +00001350- PEP 338: -m command line switch now delegates to runpy.run_module
1351 allowing it to support modules in packages and zipfiles
1352
Martin v. Löwisc661b882006-04-20 04:54:23 +00001353- On Windows, .DLL is not an accepted file name extension for
1354 extension modules anymore; extensions are only found if they
1355 end in .PYD.
1356
Martin v. Löwisea62d252006-04-03 10:56:49 +00001357- Bug #1421664: sys.stderr.encoding is now set to the same value as
1358 sys.stdout.encoding.
1359
Neal Norwitz92e212f2006-04-03 04:48:37 +00001360- __import__ accepts keyword arguments.
1361
Georg Brandlccadf842006-03-31 18:54:53 +00001362- Patch #1460496: round() now accepts keyword arguments.
1363
Anthony Baxter262c00a2006-03-30 10:53:17 +00001364- Fixed bug #1459029 - unicode reprs were double-escaped.
1365
Hye-Shik Changd478f342006-03-23 12:32:36 +00001366- Patch #1396919: The system scope threads are reenabled on FreeBSD
1367 5.4 and later versions.
1368
Neal Norwitze98ccf62006-03-23 05:39:47 +00001369- Bug #1115379: Compiling a Unicode string with an encoding declaration
1370 now gives a SyntaxError.
1371
Georg Brandlabd1ff82006-03-18 07:59:59 +00001372- Previously, Python code had no easy way to access the contents of a
1373 cell object. Now, a ``cell_contents`` attribute has been added
1374 (closes patch #1170323).
1375
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001376- Patch #1123430: Python's small-object allocator now returns an arena to
1377 the system ``free()`` when all memory within an arena becomes unused
1378 again. Prior to Python 2.5, arenas (256KB chunks of memory) were never
1379 freed. Some applications will see a drop in virtual memory size now,
1380 especially long-running applications that, from time to time, temporarily
1381 use a large number of small objects. Note that when Python returns an
1382 arena to the platform C's ``free()``, there's no guarantee that the
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001383 platform C library will in turn return that memory to the operating system.
1384 The effect of the patch is to stop making that impossible, and in tests it
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001385 appears to be effective at least on Microsoft C and gcc-based systems.
1386 Thanks to Evan Jones for hard work and patience.
1387
Georg Brandl533ff6f2006-03-08 18:09:27 +00001388- Patch #1434038: property() now uses the getter's docstring if there is
1389 no "doc" argument given. This makes it possible to legitimately use
1390 property() as a decorator to produce a read-only property.
1391
Guido van Rossum9aa37ab2006-03-07 18:54:08 +00001392- PEP 357, patch 1436368: add an __index__ method to int/long and a matching
1393 nb_index slot to the PyNumberMethods struct. The slot is consulted instead
1394 of requiring an int or long in slicing and a few other contexts, enabling
1395 other objects (e.g. Numeric Python's integers) to be used as slice indices.
1396
Neal Norwitz995acdf2006-03-07 05:01:00 +00001397- Fixed various bugs reported by Coverity's Prevent tool.
1398
Brett Cannonbf364092006-03-01 04:25:17 +00001399- PEP 352, patch #1104669: Make exceptions new-style objects. Introduced the
1400 new exception base class, BaseException, which has a new message attribute.
1401 KeyboardInterrupt and SystemExit to directly inherit from BaseException now.
1402 Raising a string exception now raises a DeprecationWarning.
1403
Thomas Woutersfb609f42006-02-28 16:37:25 +00001404- Patch #1438387, PEP 328: relative and absolute imports. Imports can now be
1405 explicitly relative, using 'from .module import name' to mean 'from the same
1406 package as this module is in. Imports without dots still default to the
1407 old relative-then-absolute, unless 'from __future__ import
1408 absolute_import' is used.
1409
Brett Cannona7446e32006-02-27 23:39:10 +00001410- Properly check if 'warnings' raises an exception (usually when a filter set
1411 to "error" is triggered) when raising a warning for raising string
1412 exceptions.
1413
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001414- CO_GENERATOR_ALLOWED is no longer defined. This behavior is the default.
Neal Norwitz0023a2f2006-02-27 23:24:48 +00001415 The name was removed from Include/code.h.
1416
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001417- PEP 308: conditional expressions were added: (x if cond else y).
Neal Norwitzeb651252006-02-27 16:47:12 +00001418
Guido van Rossum1968ad32006-02-25 22:38:04 +00001419- Patch 1433928:
1420 - The copy module now "copies" function objects (as atomic objects).
1421 - dict.__getitem__ now looks for a __missing__ hook before raising
1422 KeyError.
1423
Tim Peters84ef21c2006-02-28 20:39:06 +00001424- PEP 343: with statement implemented. Needs ``from __future__ import
1425 with_statement``. Use of 'with' as a variable will generate a warning.
1426 Use of 'as' as a variable will also generate a warning (unless it's
Neal Norwitz055ec242006-02-28 20:06:49 +00001427 part of an import statement).
Guido van Rossum1a5e21e2006-02-28 21:57:43 +00001428 The following objects have __context__ methods:
1429 - The built-in file type.
1430 - The thread.LockType type.
1431 - The following types defined by the threading module:
1432 Lock, RLock, Condition, Semaphore, BoundedSemaphore.
1433 - The decimal.Context class.
Guido van Rossumc2e20742006-02-27 22:32:47 +00001434
Marc-André Lemburgfe4b34c2006-02-19 15:22:22 +00001435- Fix the encodings package codec search function to only search
1436 inside its own package. Fixes problem reported in patch #1433198.
1437
1438 Note: Codec packages should implement and register their own
1439 codec search function. PEP 100 has the details.
1440
Tim Peters9ea89d22006-06-04 03:26:02 +00001441- PEP 353: Using ``Py_ssize_t`` as the index type.
1442
1443- ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` builds now add ``4*sizeof(size_t)`` bytes of debugging
1444 info to each allocated block, since the ``Py_ssize_t`` changes (PEP 353)
1445 now allow Python to make use of memory blocks exceeding 2**32 bytes for
1446 some purposes on 64-bit boxes. A ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` build was limited
1447 to 4-byte allocations before.
Martin v. Löwis18e16552006-02-15 17:27:45 +00001448
Neal Norwitzfc76d632006-01-10 06:03:13 +00001449- Patch #1400181, fix unicode string formatting to not use the locale.
1450 This is how string objects work. u'%f' could use , instead of .
1451 for the decimal point. Now both strings and unicode always use periods.
1452
Neal Norwitz671b9e32006-01-09 07:07:12 +00001453- Bug #1244610, #1392915, fix build problem on OpenBSD 3.7 and 3.8.
1454 configure would break checking curses.h.
1455
Georg Brandlcd4d1e82005-12-27 17:37:07 +00001456- Bug #959576: The pwd module is now builtin. This allows Python to be
1457 built on UNIX platforms without $HOME set.
1458
Neal Norwitzc10978f2005-12-19 06:07:16 +00001459- Bug #1072182, fix some potential problems if characters are signed.
1460
Neal Norwitz5d0ad502005-12-19 04:27:42 +00001461- Bug #889500, fix line number on SyntaxWarning for global declarations.
1462
Neal Norwitzdb83eb32005-12-18 05:29:30 +00001463- Bug #1378022, UTF-8 files with a leading BOM crashed the interpreter.
1464
Neal Norwitze7214a12005-12-18 05:03:17 +00001465- Support for converting hex strings to floats no longer works.
1466 This was not portable. float('0x3') now raises a ValueError.
1467
Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001468- Patch #1382163: Expose Subversion revision number to Python. New C API

Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001470 is now displayed in interactive prompt banner.
1471
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00001472- Implementation of PEP 341 - Unification of try/except and try/finally.
1473 "except" clauses can now be written together with a "finally" clause in
Neal Norwitz11ca77e2005-12-17 22:24:12 +00001474 one try statement instead of two nested ones. Patch #1355913.
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00001475
Hye-Shik Chang835b2432005-12-17 04:38:31 +00001476- Bug #1379994: Builtin unicode_escape and raw_unicode_escape codec
1477 now encodes backslash correctly.
1478

1483
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001484- SF Bug #1350188, "setdlopenflags" leads to crash upon "import"
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001485 It was possible for dlerror() to return a NULL pointer, so
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001486 it will now use a default error message in this case.
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001487
Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00001488- Replaced most Unicode charmap codecs with new ones using the
1489 new Unicode translate string feature in the builtin charmap
1490 codec; the codecs were created from the mapping tables available
1491 at ftp.unicode.org and contain a few updates (e.g. the Mac OS
1492 encodings now include a mapping for the Apple logo)
1493
Tim Peterse3547fd2005-12-16 23:13:57 +00001494- Added a few more codecs for Mac OS encodings

1513
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001514- All iterators now have a Boolean value of True. Formerly, some iterators
Raymond Hettinger6b27cda2005-09-24 21:23:05 +00001515 supported a __len__() method which evaluated to False when the iterator

Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001551- SF bug #1185883: Python's small-object memory allocator took over
1552 a block managed by the platform C library whenever a realloc specified
1553 a small new size. However, there's no portable way to know then how
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001554 much of the address space following the pointer is valid, so there's no
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001555 portable way to copy data from the C-managed block into Python's
1556 small-object space without risking a memory fault. Python's small-object
1557 realloc now leaves such blocks under the control of the platform C
1558 realloc.

1574
Michael W. Hudsonda85a902005-06-01 11:34:22 +00001575- SF patch #1181301: on platforms that appear to use IEEE 754 floats,
1576 the routines that promise to produce IEEE 754 binary representations
1577 of floats now simply copy bytes around.
1578

Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001582- patch #1109424: int, long, float, complex, and unicode now check for the
1583 proper magic slot for type conversions when subclassed. Previously the
1584 magic slot was ignored during conversion. Semantics now match the way
1585 subclasses of str always behaved. int/long/float, conversion of an instance
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00001586 to the base class has been moved to the proper nb_* magic slot and out of

Barry Warsawc8d907c2005-04-19 23:43:40 +00001590- Descriptors defined in C with a PyGetSetDef structure, where the setter is
1591 NULL, now raise an AttributeError when attempting to set or delete the
1592 attribute. Previously a TypeError was raised, but this was inconsistent
1593 with the equivalent pure-Python implementation.
1594
Michael W. Hudson774479c2005-04-18 08:46:17 +00001595- It is now safe to call PyGILState_Release() before
1596 PyEval_InitThreads() (note that if there is reason to believe there
1597 are multiple threads around you still must call PyEval_InitThreads()
1598 before using the Python API; this fix is for extension modules that
1599 have no way of knowing if Python is multi-threaded yet).

1653 current thread state when the auto-GIL-state machinery knows about
1654 it (since the thread state is being deleted, continuing to remember it
1655 can't help, but can hurt if another thread happens to get created with

Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001868 later to build this - if you have an earlier version, the C extension
Anthony Baxterc51ee692006-04-01 00:57:31 +00001869 module will not be built.

1896 package that was included in Python 2.3, except that PEP 8 module names are
1897 now used (e.g. mail.message instead of email.Message). The MIME classes
1898 have been moved to a subpackage (e.g. email.mime.text instead of
1899 email.MIMEText). The old names are still supported for now. Several
1900 deprecated Message methods have been removed and lots of bugs have been
1901 fixed. More details can be found in the email package documentation.

2175
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002176- Enhancements to the csv module:
2177
2178 + Dialects are now validated by the underlying C code, better
Georg Brandl7eb4b7d2005-07-22 21:49:32 +00002179 reflecting its capabilities, and improving its compliance with
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002180 PEP 305.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002181 + Dialect parameter parsing has been re-implemented to improve error
2182 reporting.
2183 + quotechar=None and quoting=QUOTE_NONE now work the way PEP 305
2184 dictates.
2185 + the parser now removes the escapechar prefix from escaped characters.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002186 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the writer now tests for numeric
Andrew M. Kuchling6db67822006-04-18 14:04:57 +00002187 types, rather than any object that can be represented as a numeric.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002188 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the reader now casts unquoted fields
2189 to floats.
Andrew McNamaraf69d94f2005-01-13 11:30:54 +00002190 + reader now allows \r characters to be quoted (previously it only allowed
2191 \n to be quoted).
Andrew McNamarac89f2842005-01-12 07:44:42 +00002192 + writer doublequote handling improved.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002193 + Dialect classes passed to the module are no longer instantiated by
2194 the module before being parsed (the former validation scheme required
2195 this, but the mechanism was unreliable).
2196 + The dialect registry now contains instances of the internal
2197 C-coded dialect type, rather than references to python objects.
2198 + the internal c-coded dialect type is now immutable.
2199 + register_dialect now accepts the same keyword dialect specifications
2200 as the reader and writer, allowing the user to register dialects
2201 without first creating a dialect class.
2202 + a configurable limit to the size of parsed fields has been added -
2203 previously, an unmatched quote character could result in the entire
2204 file being read into the field buffer before an error was reported.
Andrew McNamara31d88962005-01-12 03:45:10 +00002205 + A new module method csv.field_size_limit() has been added that sets
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002206 the parser field size limit (returning the former limit). The initial
2207 limit is 128kB.
Andrew McNamara7f2053e2005-01-12 11:17:16 +00002208 + A line_num attribute has been added to the reader object, which tracks
2209 the number of lines read from the source iterator. This is not
2210 the same as the number of records returned, as records can span
2211 multiple lines.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002212 + reader and writer objects were not being registered with the cyclic-GC.
2213 This has been fixed.
2214
Brett Cannone6539c42005-01-08 02:43:53 +00002215- _DummyThread objects in the threading module now delete self.__block that is
2216 inherited from _Thread since it uses up a lock allocated by 'thread'. The
2217 lock primitives tend to be limited in number and thus should not be wasted on
2218 a _DummyThread object. Fixes bug #1089632.
2219
Raymond Hettinger97db05d2005-01-07 08:15:41 +00002220- The imghdr module now detects Exif files.
2221
Raymond Hettinger6065d322004-12-20 23:51:53 +00002222- StringIO.truncate() now correctly adjusts the size attribute.
2223 (Bug #951915).
2224
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002225- locale.py now uses an updated locale alias table (built using
2226 Tools/i18n/makelocalealias.py, a tool to parse the X11 locale
2227 alias file); the encoding lookup was enhanced to use Python's
Andrew M. Kuchling88b85822005-08-23 00:57:07 +00002228 encoding alias table.
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002229
Raymond Hettinger3557f422004-12-07 12:02:02 +00002230- moved deprecated modules to Lib/lib-old: whrandom, tzparse, statcache.
2231
Raymond Hettingera6b45cc2004-12-07 07:05:57 +00002232- the pickle module no longer accepts the deprecated None option in the
2233 args tuple returned by __reduce__().
2234
Brett Cannon84667c02004-12-07 03:25:18 +00002235- optparse now optionally imports gettext. This allows its use in setup.py.

2242
Raymond Hettingerf3fa9462004-12-05 01:58:09 +00002243- the filecmp module no longer uses the deprecated use_statcache argument.
2244
Raymond Hettinger664347b2004-12-04 21:21:53 +00002245- unittest.TestCase.run() and unittest.TestSuite.run() can now be successfully
2246 extended or overridden by subclasses. Formerly, the subclassed method would
2247 be ignored by the rest of the module. (Bug #1078905).
2248
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002249- heapq.nsmallest() and heapq.nlargest() now support key= arguments with
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00002250 the same meaning as in list.sort().
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002251
Walter Dörwald36733692004-12-22 12:50:50 +00002252- Bug #1076985: ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` now calls ``read()`` only
2253 once when a size argument is given. This prevents a buffer overflow in the
2254 tokenizer with very long source lines.
2255
Barry Warsaw538561e2006-01-01 21:48:54 +00002256- Bug #1083110: ``zlib.decompress.flush()`` would segfault if called
2257 immediately after creating the object, without any intervening
2258 ``.decompress()`` calls.
Andrew M. Kuchling3b585b32004-12-28 20:10:48 +00002259
Skip Montanaro05885812005-01-16 20:48:27 +00002260- The reconvert.quote function can now emit triple-quoted strings. The

Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002262
Walter Dörwaldaf3b39a2005-02-18 13:22:43 +00002263- ``UserString.MutableString`` now supports negative indices in
2264 ``__setitem__`` and ``__delitem__``
2265
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00002266- Bug #1149508: ``textwrap`` now handles hyphenated numbers (eg. "2004-03-05")
2267 correctly.
2268
Walter Dörwaldbc8e6422005-04-21 21:32:03 +00002269- Partial fixes for SF bugs #1163244 and #1175396: If a chunk read by
2270 ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` has a trailing "\r", read one more
2271 character even if the user has passed a size parameter to get a proper
2272 line ending. Remove the special handling of a "\r\n" that has been split
2273 between two lines.
2274
Walter Dörwalda47d1c02005-08-30 10:23:14 +00002275- Bug #1251300: On UCS-4 builds the "unicode-internal" codec will now complain
2276 about illegal code points. The codec now supports PEP 293 style error
2277 handlers.
2278
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00002279- Bug #1235646: ``codecs.StreamRecoder.next()`` now reencodes the data it reads
Walter Dörwaldc5238b82005-09-01 11:56:53 +00002280 from the input stream, so that the output is a byte string in the correct
2281 encoding instead of a unicode string.
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00002282
Gustavo Niemeyer6fa0c5a2005-09-14 08:54:39 +00002283- Bug #1202493: Fixing SRE parser to handle '{}' as perl does, rather than
2284 considering it exactly like a '*'.

Walter Dörwald58917a62006-03-31 15:26:22 +00002294- Bug #947906: An object oriented interface has been added to the calendar
2295 module. It's possible to generate HTML calendar now and the module can be
Walter Dörwald48d5e502006-04-01 07:57:00 +00002296 called as a script (e.g. via ``python -mcalendar``). Localized month and
2297 weekday names can be ouput (even if an exotic encoding is used) using
2298 special classes that use unicode.

Brett Cannon08cd5982005-04-24 22:26:38 +00002325- EXTRA_CFLAGS has been introduced as an environment variable to hold compiler
2326 flags that change binary compatibility. Changes were also made to
2327 distutils.sysconfig to also use the environment variable when used during
Martin v. Löwisd7c795e2005-04-25 07:14:03 +00002328 compilation of the interpreter and of C extensions through distutils.

Bob Ippolitoed233462005-03-29 13:47:59 +00002330- SF patch 1171735: Darwin 8's headers are anal about POSIX compliance,
2331 and linking has changed (prebinding is now deprecated, and libcc_dynamic
2332 no longer exists). This configure patch makes things right.

2335
Brett Cannon46d96232005-02-16 00:07:19 +00002336- spwdmodule.c is built only if either HAVE_GETSPNAM or HAVE_HAVE_GETSPENT is
2337 defined. Discovered as a result of not being able to build on OS X.
2338
Brett Cannon516592f2004-12-07 00:42:59 +00002339- setup.py now uses the directories specified in LDFLAGS using the -L option
2340 and in CPPFLAGS using the -I option for adding library and include
2341 directories, respectively, for compiling extension modules against. This has
2342 led to the core being compiled using the values in CPPFLAGS. It also removes
2343 the need for the special-casing of both DarwinPorts and Fink for darwin since
2344 the proper directories can be specified in LDFLAGS (``-L/sw/lib`` for Fink,
2345 ``-L/opt/local/lib`` for DarwinPorts) and CPPFLAGS (``-I/sw/include`` for
2346 Fink, ``-I/opt/local/include`` for DarwinPorts).
2347
Brett Cannon43802422005-02-10 20:48:03 +00002348- Test in configure.in that checks for tzset no longer dependent on tm->tm_zone
2349 to exist in the struct (not required by either ISO C nor the UNIX 2 spec).
2350 Tests for sanity in tzname when HAVE_TZNAME defined were also defined.
2351 Closes bug #1096244. Thanks Gregory Bond.

2354-----
2355
Tim Petersc9d78aa2006-03-26 23:27:58 +00002356- ``PyMem_{Del, DEL}`` and ``PyMem_{Free, FREE}`` no longer map to
2357 ``PyObject_{Free, FREE}``. They map to the system ``free()`` now. If memory
2358 is obtained via the ``PyObject_`` family, it must be released via the
2359 ``PyObject_`` family, and likewise for the ``PyMem_`` family. This has
2360 always been officially true, but when Python's small-object allocator was
2361 introduced, an attempt was made to cater to a few extension modules
2362 discovered at the time that obtained memory via ``PyObject_New`` but
2363 released it via ``PyMem_DEL``. It's years later, and if such code still
2364 exists it will fail now (probably with segfaults, but calling wrong
2365 low-level memory management functions can yield many symptoms).
2366
Raymond Hettingerbeb31012005-08-16 03:47:52 +00002367- Added a C API for set and frozenset objects.
2368

Walter Dörwaldd1c1e102005-10-06 20:29:57 +00002371- Patch #1313939: PyUnicode_DecodeCharmap() accepts a unicode string as the
2372 mapping argument now. This string is used as a mapping table. Byte values
2373 greater than the length of the string and 0xFFFE are treated as undefined
2374 mappings.
