8================================
9
10Core and Builtins
11-----------------
12
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +000013- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
14 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
15
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +000016- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
17 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
18
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +000019- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
20 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
21 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
22
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +000023- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
24 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
25 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
26 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
27 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
28 level.
29
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +000030- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
31 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
32 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
33 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
34 all imports from that module to fail.
35
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +000036- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
37 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
38 new-style classes.
39
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +000040- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
41 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
42 another file in sys.stdout.
43
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +000044- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
45 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
46 another thread's dictionary.
47
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +000048- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
49 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
50 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
51 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
52 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
53 10, -1).
54
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +000055- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments, f(a=2, a=23),
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +000056 would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression from 2.4 caused by the
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +000057 switch to the new compiler.
58
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +000059- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with other
60 freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into ClearFreeList apis and
61 calls them via gc.collect().
62
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +000063Library
64-------
65
Georg Brandla24869a2008-07-16 22:33:18 +000066- Issue #3312: Fix two crashes in sqlite3.
67
Georg Brandl86cbf812008-07-16 21:31:41 +000068- Issue #1608818: Fix misbehavior in os.listdir() if readdir() fails.
69
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +000070- Issue #3125: Remove copy_reg in multiprocessing and replace it with
71 ForkingPickler.register() to resolve conflict with ctypes.
72
73- Issue #3090: Fixed ARCHFLAGS parsing on OS/X
74
Thomas Heller880f5292008-07-15 19:39:38 +000075- Issue #3313: Fixed a crash when a failed dlopen() call does not set
76 a valid dlerror() message.
77
Thomas Heller2bad6572008-07-15 17:19:50 +000078- Issue #3258: Fixed a crash when a ctypes POINTER type to an
79 incomplete structure was created.
80
Brett Cannon3d0b9f02008-07-13 01:15:07 +000081- Issue #3339: dummy_thread.acquire() should not return None.
82
Raymond Hettingerb01713e2008-07-10 14:34:57 +000083- Issue #3285: Fractions from_float() and from_decimal() accept Integral arguments.
84
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +000085- Issue #3301: Bisect module behaved badly when lo was negative.
Raymond Hettinger3cd1e422008-07-10 14:03:19 +000086
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +000087- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
88 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +000089 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +000090 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
91 merged into trunk.
92
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +000093- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().

96
97- Issue #1526: Allow more than 64k files to be added to Zip64 file.
98
99- Issue #1746: Correct handling of zipfile archive comments (previously
100 archives with comments over 4k were flagged as invalid). Allow writing
101 Zip files with archives by setting the 'comment' attribute of a ZipFile.
102
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000103- Issue #449227: The rlcompleter module now adds "(" to callable objects

Nick Coghlanc060b0e2008-07-02 13:09:19 +0000106- Issue #3190: Pydoc now hides the automatic module attribute __package__ (the
107 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
108
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000109- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for
110 removal in Python 3.0 in favor of urllib2.urlopen().
111
Gregory P. Smithf4140642008-07-06 07:16:40 +0000112- Issue #2113: Fix error in subprocess.Popen if the select system call is

120 redundant ":443" port number designation when the connection is using the
121 default https port (443).
122
Nick Coghlan38469e22008-07-13 12:23:47 +0000123Tests
124-----
125
126- test.test_support.catch_warning now keeps track of all warnings it sees
127 and is now better documented. Explicit unit tests for this context manager
128 have been added to test_warnings.
129
130
Martin v. Löwisd84fd952008-06-30 06:57:39 +0000131Build

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000555- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
556 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
557 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where

559 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
560 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
561 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
562 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000625- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
626 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
627 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
628 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
629 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
630 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
631 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
632 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
633 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
634 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
635 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
636 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
637 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
638 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
639 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
640 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
641 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
642 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
643 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
644 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
645
646 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
647 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
648 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
649 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
650 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
651 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
652 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
653 access to the underlying socket used.
654
655 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
656 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
657 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000658
659 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000660 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,

662 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
663
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000664 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
665 suite to run in parallel without issue.

943
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +0000944- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
945 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
946 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
947 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
948 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
949 module is:
950 from future_builtins import hex, oct
951
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +0000952- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
953 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
954 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
955 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
956 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
957 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
958
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +0000959- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
960 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
961 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
962 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
963 PyObject_Format().
964
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000965- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
966 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
967 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +0000968
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000969- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also

978 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +0000979
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000980- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a

2625 lists in Object/ are named ``free_list``, the counter ``numfree``

2630 to ``PyTuple_SetItem``, it can be used to populate a brand new

2645 of w# format code incorrectly truncated the length to an int, even
2646 when PY_SSIZE_T_CLEAN is set. The str.decode method used to return
2647 incorrect results with huge strings.
