Christian Heimesfb1813c2008-08-22 19:34:15 +000015- Issue #3642: Changed type of numarenas from uint to size_t
16 in order to silence a compilier warning on 64bit OSes.
17
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +000018- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
19 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.

32Core and Builtins
33-----------------
34
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +000035- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
36 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
37 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
38 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
39 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
40 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
41 default.
42
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +000043- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
44 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
45
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +000046- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
47 value again.
48
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +000049- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
50 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
51 and introducing s*.
52
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +000053- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
54 object was stored in the freelist.
55
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +000056- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
57 ValueError consistently across platforms.
58
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +000059- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
60 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
61 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
62
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +000063- Apply security patches from Apple.
64
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +000065- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
66 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
67
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +000068- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
69 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
70
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +000071- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
72 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
73 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
74
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +000075- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
76 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
77 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
78 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
79 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
80 failed have been fixed.
81
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +000082Library
83-------
84
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +000085- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
86
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +000087- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
88 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
89
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +000090- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
91 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
92 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
93
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +000094- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
95 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
96 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
97 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
98 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
99 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
100
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000101- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
102 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
103
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000104- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
105
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000106- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
107
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000108- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
109
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000110- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
111 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
112
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000113- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
114 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
115
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000116- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
117 in a redirect.
118
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000119- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +0000120 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000121
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +0000122- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
123 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
124
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000125- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
126 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
127 regular expression.
128
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000129- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
130 thread-safe.
131
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +0000132- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
133 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
134 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
135
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +0000136- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
137
Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +0000138- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
139 menu entries were not deleted.
140
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +0000141- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
142 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
143
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000144- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
145 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
146
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000147- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
148 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
149 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
150
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +0000151- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
152 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
153 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
154
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +0000155- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
156 the reload() built-in has been removed.
157
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000158- Changed code in the following modules/packages to remove warnings raised
Brett Cannonc1b76e42008-08-09 23:06:16 +0000159 while running under the ``-3`` flag: aifc, asynchat, asyncore, bdb, bsddb,
Brett Cannon047e4a92008-08-17 04:16:04 +0000160 ConfigParser, cookielib, csv, difflib, distutils, DocXMLRPCServer, email,
161 filecmp, fileinput, inspect, logging, modulefinder, pdb, pickle, profile,
162 pstats, pydoc, re, rlcompleter, SimpleXMLRPCServer, shelve, socket,
163 subprocess, sqlite3, tarfile, Tkinter, test.test_support, textwrap,
164 threading, tokenize, traceback, urlparse, wsgiref, xml, xmlrpclib.
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000165
Lars Gustäbel727bd0b2008-08-02 11:26:39 +0000166- Issue #3039: Fix tarfile.TarFileCompat.writestr() which always
167 raised an AttributeError.
168
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000169- Issue #2523: Fix quadratic behaviour when read()ing a binary file without
Antoine Pitroude781a42008-08-09 12:43:23 +0000170 asking for a specific length. This problem only affected files opened
171 using the new "io" module, not the built-in open() function.
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000172
Mark Dickinsonfe84cce2008-07-27 06:39:07 +0000173- Issue #3449: Update decimal module to use most recent specification
174 (v. 1.68) and tests (v. 2.58) from IBM.
175
Skip Montanarof9ac43f2008-07-27 00:50:41 +0000176- Issue 3437: Bug fix in robotparser parsing of Allow: lines.
177
Raymond Hettinger8c664e82008-07-25 18:43:33 +0000178- Issue 1592: Improve error reporting when operations are attempted
179 on a closed shelf.
180

182
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000183- Issue #3120: On 64-bit Windows the subprocess module was truncating handles.
184
185- Issue #3303: Fix a crash in locale.strcoll() when calling it with
186 invalid arguments.
187
188- Issue #3302: Fix several crashes when calling locale's gettext functions
189 with None arguments.
190
191- Issue #3389: Allow resolving dotted names for handlers in logging
192 configuration files.
193
194- Deprecate the sunaudio module for removal in Python 3.0.
195
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +0000196- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a
197 file name rather than a ZipInfo instance, so files are extracted with
198 mode 0600 rather than 000 under Unix.
199
Gregory P. Smitha36f8fe2008-08-04 00:13:29 +0000200- Issue #1857: subprocess.Popen.poll gained an additional _deadstate keyword
201 argument in python 2.5, this broke code that subclassed Popen to include its
202 own poll method. Fixed my moving _deadstate to an _internal_poll method.
203

210-------------
211
Nick Coghlan6e8fef02008-08-18 13:14:22 +0000212- Issue #2235: the C API function PyObject_HashNotImplemented and its
213 interaction with the tp_hash slot (added in 2.6b2) are now documented
214
Nick Coghlan2a0c2b12008-08-04 12:47:17 +0000215- Issue #643841: The language reference now provides more detailed
216 coverage of the lookup process for special methods. The disclaimers
217 regarding lack of coverage of new-style classes have also been
218 removed, since the coverage is now fairly reasonable.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000224*Release date: 17-Jul-2008*
225
Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000226Core and Builtins
227-----------------
228
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000229- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
230 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
231 an integer using operator.index().
232
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000233- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
234 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
235
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000236- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
237 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
238
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000239- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
240 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
241 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
242
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000243- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
244 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
245 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
246 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
247 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
248 level.
249
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000250- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
251 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
252 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
253 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
254 all imports from that module to fail.
255
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000256- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
257 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
258 new-style classes.
259
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000260- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
261 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
262 another file in sys.stdout.
263
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000264- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
265 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
266 another thread's dictionary.
267
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000268- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
269 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
270 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
271 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
272 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
273 10, -1).
274
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000275- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
276 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
277 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000278
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000279- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
280 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
281 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +0000282
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000283Library
284-------
285
Thomas Heller57adf222008-08-14 19:10:48 +0000286- Issue #3554: ctypes.string_at and ctypes.wstring_at did call Python
287 api functions without holding the GIL, which could lead to a fatal
288 error when they failed.
289
Martin v. Löwisaabf4042008-08-02 07:20:25 +0000290- Issue #799428: Fix Tkinter.Misc._nametowidget to unwrap Tcl command objects.
291
Jesse Noller7fb96402008-07-17 21:01:05 +0000292- Issue #3395: fix reference in test_multiprocessing to old debugInfo method
293
Georg Brandla24869a2008-07-16 22:33:18 +0000294- Issue #3312: Fix two crashes in sqlite3.
295
Georg Brandl86cbf812008-07-16 21:31:41 +0000296- Issue #1608818: Fix misbehavior in os.listdir() if readdir() fails.
297
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000298- Issue #3125: Remove copy_reg in multiprocessing and replace it with
299 ForkingPickler.register() to resolve conflict with ctypes.
300
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000301- Issue #3090: Fixed ARCHFLAGS parsing on OS/X
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000302
Thomas Heller880f5292008-07-15 19:39:38 +0000303- Issue #3313: Fixed a crash when a failed dlopen() call does not set
304 a valid dlerror() message.
305
Thomas Heller2bad6572008-07-15 17:19:50 +0000306- Issue #3258: Fixed a crash when a ctypes POINTER type to an
307 incomplete structure was created.
308
Brett Cannon3d0b9f02008-07-13 01:15:07 +0000309- Issue #3339: dummy_thread.acquire() should not return None.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000788- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
789 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
790 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
791 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
792 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
793 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
794 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000858- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
859 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
860 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
861 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
862 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
863 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
864 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
865 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
866 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
867 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
868 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
869 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
870 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
871 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
872 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
873 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
874 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
875 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
876 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
877 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
878
879 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
880 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
881 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
882 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
883 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
884 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
885 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
886 access to the underlying socket used.
887
888 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
889 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
890 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000891

1165-----------------
1166
Fred Drakea8ee94b2008-03-01 02:45:07 +00001167- Issue #2051: pyc and pyo files are no longer created with permission
Barry Warsaw52973612008-03-01 02:23:38 +00001168 644. The mode is now inherited from the py file.
Christian Heimes40346852008-02-23 17:52:07 +00001169
Georg Brandlad61bc82008-02-23 15:11:18 +00001170- Issue #2067: file.__exit__() now calls subclasses' close() method.
1171
1172- Patch #1759: Backport of PEP 3129 class decorators.
Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +00001173
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001174- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +00001175 issue 215555 for a discussion.
1176
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001177- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1178 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1179 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1180 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1181 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1182 module is:
1183 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1184
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001185- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1186 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1187 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1188 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1189 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1190 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1191
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001192- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1193 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1194 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1195 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1196 PyObject_Format().
1197
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001198- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1199 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1200 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +00001201
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001202- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001203 prevent a possible crash: an Abstract Base Class would try to access
1204 a slot on a registered virtual subclass.

1210 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1211 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001212
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001213- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
1214 subclass of collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set
1215 to a bound method.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcb01aa432008-02-08 00:56:02 +00001216
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +00001217- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
1218 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
1219
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001220- Limit free list of method and builtin function objects to 256
1221 entries each.

1228 calls. Python expected the return type int but the fork familie
1229 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +00001230
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001231- Issue #1678380: Fix a bug that identifies 0j and -0j when they

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001243- Patch #1473257: generator objects gain a gi_code attribute. This is
1244 the same object as the func_code attribute of the function that
1245 produced the generator.
Georg Brandl0cdf9a32008-01-26 14:14:20 +00001246

1248 compiler, even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is
1249 supposed to be run when the condition is false. Now the compiler
1250 correctly emits bytecode for the "else" suite.

2863 to ``PyTuple_SetItem``, it can be used to populate a brand new
2864 frozenset; but it does not steal a reference to the added item.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00002877- Issue #1521: On 64bit platforms, using PyArgs_ParseTuple with the t#
2878 of w# format code incorrectly truncated the length to an int, even
2879 when PY_SSIZE_T_CLEAN is set. The str.decode method used to return
2880 incorrect results with huge strings.
Georg Brandl6caad7d2008-01-26 14:19:22 +00002881

2900- Fix some leftovers from the conversion from int to Py_ssize_t
2901 (relevant to strings and sequences of more than 2**31 items).
2902
2903- Make _PyGILState_NoteThreadState() static, it was not used anywhere
2904 outside of pystate.c and should not be necessary.
