13-----------------
14
Hirokazu Yamamoto2c66b7c2008-10-09 18:06:58 +000015- On windows, os.chdir given unicode was not working if GetCurrentDirectoryW
16 returned a path longer than MAX_PATH. (But It's doubtful this code path is
17 really executed because I cannot move to such directory on win2k)
18
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc00c94ed2008-10-07 20:40:09 +000019- Issue #4069: When set.remove(element) is used with a set element, the element
20 is temporarily replaced with an equivalent frozenset. But the eventual
21 KeyError would always report the empty frozenset([]) as the missing key. Now
22 it correctly refers to the initial element.
23
Christian Heimes4d8a6f42008-10-02 19:49:47 +000024- Fixed C99 style comments in several files. Python is now C89 compatible
Christian Heimesc7f315a2008-10-02 18:39:50 +000025 again.

50 objects, when the "start" parameter is a huge value.
51
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc17617a02008-09-25 20:52:56 +000052- Issue #3965: Fixed a crash on Windows when open() is given an invalid

106- Issue #3850: recursion tests in Misc/find_recursion_limit.py can raise

123Core and Builtins
124-----------------
125
Martin v. Löwis9fa5a282008-09-11 06:53:30 +0000126- Issue #3642: Suppress warning in obmalloc when size_t is larger than uint.
127
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +0000128- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
129 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
130 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
131 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
132 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
133 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
134 64bit values.
135
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +0000136- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on
137 error.
138
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd3ffb892008-09-09 07:24:30 +0000139- Issue #3777: long() applied to a float object now always return a long
140 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
141 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
142 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
143
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +0000144- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
145 a unicode argument.
146
Benjamin Peterson17f03ca2008-09-01 14:18:30 +0000147- Issue #3683: Fix compilation when --without-threads is given.
148
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +0000149- Issue #3668: Fix a memory leak with the "s*" argument parser in
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000150 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +0000151 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
152
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000153- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +0000154 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
155 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
156 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
157 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
158 type object.
159
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +0000160- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.
161
162- Fix memory leaks found with valgrind and update suppressions file.
163
164- Fix compiler warnings in opt mode which would lead to invalid memory reads.
165
166- Fix problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker.
167
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +0000168- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
169 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
170
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +0000171- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
172 ``__delslice__``.
173
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +0000174- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared
175 library targets in the Makefile.
176
Gregory P. Smith980b99b2008-09-07 05:15:18 +0000177- Issue #1204: The configure script now tests for additional libraries
178 that may be required when linking against readline. This fixes issues
179 with x86_64 builds on some platforms (a few Linux flavors and OpenBSD).
180
Benjamin Peterson14cb6bc2008-08-26 17:08:40 +0000181C-API

187-------
188
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc24cb3822008-09-11 20:56:13 +0000189- Issue #3640: Pickling a list or a dict uses less local variables, to reduce
190 stack usage in the case of deeply nested objects.

195
Nick Coghland2e09382008-09-11 12:11:06 +0000196- Issue #3781: Further warnings.catch_warnings() cleanup to prevent
197 silent misbehaviour when a single instance is nested in multiple
198 with statements, or when the methods are invoked in the wrong order.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000298
299Core and Builtins
300-----------------
301
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000302- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
303 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
304 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
305 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
306 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
307 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
308 default.
309
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000310- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
311 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
312
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000313- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
314 value again.
315
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000316- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
317 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
318 and introducing s*.
319
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000320- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict

322
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000323- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
324 ValueError consistently across platforms.
325
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000326- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
327 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
328 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
329
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000330- Apply security patches from Apple.
331
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000332- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
333 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
334
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000335- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
336 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
337
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000338- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
339 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
340 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
341
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000342- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
343 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
344 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
345 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
346 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
347 failed have been fixed.

356
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000357- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
358 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
359 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
360
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000361- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
362 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
363 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
364 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
365 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,

367
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000368- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things

410
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000411- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise

413
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000414- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"

462
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +0000463- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a
464 file name rather than a ZipInfo instance, so files are extracted with
465 mode 0600 rather than 000 under Unix.
466
Gregory P. Smitha36f8fe2008-08-04 00:13:29 +0000467- Issue #1857: subprocess.Popen.poll gained an additional _deadstate keyword

492
Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000493Core and Builtins
494-----------------
495
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000496- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
497 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
498 an integer using operator.index().
499
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000500- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
501 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
502
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000503- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
504 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
505
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000506- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
507 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
508 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
509
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000510- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
511 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
512 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
513 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
514 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
515 level.
516
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000517- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
518 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
519 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
520 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
521 all imports from that module to fail.
522
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000523- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
524 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
525 new-style classes.
526
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000527- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
528 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
529 another file in sys.stdout.
530
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000531- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
532 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
533 another thread's dictionary.
534
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000535- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
536 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
537 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
538 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
539 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
540 10, -1).
541
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000542- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
543 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
544 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000545
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000546- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
547 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
548 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().

555 error when they failed.
556
Martin v. Löwisaabf4042008-08-02 07:20:25 +0000557- Issue #799428: Fix Tkinter.Misc._nametowidget to unwrap Tcl command objects.

Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000565- Issue #3125: Remove copy_reg in multiprocessing and replace it with
566 ForkingPickler.register() to resolve conflict with ctypes.
567
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000568- Issue #3090: Fixed ARCHFLAGS parsing on OS/X

572
Thomas Heller2bad6572008-07-15 17:19:50 +0000573- Issue #3258: Fixed a crash when a ctypes POINTER type to an

Raymond Hettinger3cd1e422008-07-10 14:03:19 +0000581
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000582- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
583 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000584 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000585 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
586 merged into trunk.
587
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +0000588- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().

Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000598- Issue #449227: The rlcompleter module now adds "(" to callable objects
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000599 when completed.
Facundo Batista66c52772008-07-02 16:52:55 +0000600
Nick Coghlanc060b0e2008-07-02 13:09:19 +0000601- Issue #3190: Pydoc now hides the automatic module attribute __package__ (the
602 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
603
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000604- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for

612 Prevents a deadlock.
613
Gregory P. Smithc4691ec2008-07-07 05:09:12 +0000614- Issue #3094: httplib.HTTPSConnection Host: headers no longer include the

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001126- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1127 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1128 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1129 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1130 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1131 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1132 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1133 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1134 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1135 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1136 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1137 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1138 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1139 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1140 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1141 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1142 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1143 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1144 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1145 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1146
1147 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1148 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1149 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1150 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1151 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1152 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1153 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1154 access to the underlying socket used.
1155
1156 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1157 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1158 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001159
1160 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001161 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,

1444
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001445- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1446 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1447 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1448 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1449 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1450 module is:
1451 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1452
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001453- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1454 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1455 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1456 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1457 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1458 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1459
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001460- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1461 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1462 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1463 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1464 PyObject_Format().
1465

Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +00001699- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
1700 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
1701 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the
1702 other one is. For backwards compatibility, when both are
1703 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +00001704 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
