Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +000013- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
14 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier

16 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
17 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
18 10, -1).

354
Ronald Oussoren5640ce22008-06-05 12:58:24 +0000355- On MacOS X it is now possible to install the framework in 64-bit
356 mode or even as a 4-way universal binary (that is, PPC, i386,
Georg Brandl5cc774e2008-06-11 20:28:06 +0000357 PPC64 and x86_64 support in one binary).

361 - ``--with-universal-archs=all``: install 4-way universal
362
363 - ``--with-universal-archs=32-bit``: install 2-way universal, 32-bit (the default)

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000419- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
420 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
421 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
422 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``

424 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
425 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support

487-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000488
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000489- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
490 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
491 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
492 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
493 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
494 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
495 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
496 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
497 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
498 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
499 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
500 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
501 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
502 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
503 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
504 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
505 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
506 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
507 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
508 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
509
510 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
511 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
512 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
513 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
514 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
515 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
516 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
517 access to the underlying socket used.
518
519 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
520 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
521 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000522
523 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000524 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000525 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
526 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
527
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000528 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
529 suite to run in parallel without issue.

586 'raw-unicode-escape' codec. Now UTF-16 surrogates are generated in
587 this case, like normal unicode literals and the 'unicode-escape'
588 codec.

802
803- Patch #1759: Backport of PEP 3129 class decorators.

Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000805- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +0000806 issue 215555 for a discussion.
807
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +0000808- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
809 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
810 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
811 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
812 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
813 module is:
814 from future_builtins import hex, oct
815
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +0000816- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
817 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
818 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
819 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
820 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
821 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
822
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +0000823- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
824 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
825 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
826 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
827 PyObject_Format().
828
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000829- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
830 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
831 state.

Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000833- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also

835 a slot on a registered virtual subclass.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc60d6c7f2008-02-15 21:22:45 +0000836
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000837- Fixed repr() and str() of complex numbers with infinity or nan as
838 real or imaginary part.
Christian Heimes2f0da532008-02-15 06:57:08 +0000839
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000840- Clear all free lists during a gc.collect() of the highest generation
841 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
842 memory to the OS earlier.
