940 required changing the .pyc magic number. This means that .pyc files
941 generated before 2.5c2 will be regenerated.

Neal Norwitzff4b63b2006-08-04 04:50:21 +00001052
1053Core and builtins
1054-----------------
1055
Neal Norwitz24b6f202006-09-05 04:43:56 +00001056- Fix infinite recursion when subclassing long and overriding __hash__.
1057
1058- Fix concatenation (+=) of long strings.
1059
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +00001060- Unicode objects will no longer raise an exception when being
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001061 compared equal or unequal to a string and a UnicodeDecodeError
1062 exception occurs, e.g. as result of a decoding failure.
Neal Norwitz56423e52006-08-13 18:11:08 +00001063
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +00001064 Instead, the equal (==) and unequal (!=) comparison operators will
1065 now issue a UnicodeWarning and interpret the two objects as
1066 unequal. The UnicodeWarning can be filtered as desired using
1067 the warning framework, e.g. silenced completely, turned into an
1068 exception, logged, etc.
1069
1070 Note that compare operators other than equal and unequal will still
1071 raise UnicodeDecodeError exceptions as they've always done.
Neal Norwitz8a87f5d2006-08-12 17:03:09 +00001072
Marc-André Lemburg757ea272006-08-14 11:44:34 +00001073- Fix segfault when doing string formatting on subclasses of long.
1074
1075- Fix bug related to __len__ functions using values > 2**32 on 64-bit machines
1076 with new-style classes.
1077
1078- Fix bug related to __len__ functions returning negative values with
1079 classic classes.
1080
1081- Patch #1538606, Fix __index__() clipping. There were some problems
1082 discovered with the API and how integers that didn't fit into Py_ssize_t
1083 were handled. This patch attempts to provide enough alternatives
1084 to effectively use __index__.
1085
Martin v. Löwisab2f8f72006-08-09 07:57:39 +00001086- Bug #1536021: __hash__ may now return long int; the final hash
1087 value is obtained by invoking hash on the long int.
1088
Thomas Hellerab1049c2006-08-08 17:37:00 +00001089- Bug #1536786: buffer comparison could emit a RuntimeWarning.
1090
Georg Brandl7e3ba2a2006-08-06 08:23:54 +00001091- Bug #1535165: fixed a segfault in input() and raw_input() when
1092 sys.stdin is closed.
1093
Thomas Heller74d36f02006-08-04 18:17:40 +00001094- On Windows, the PyErr_Warn function is now exported from
1095 the Python dll again.
1096
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +00001097- Bug #1191458: tracing over for loops now produces a line event
1098 on each iteration. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc
1099 magic number. This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5c1
1100 will be regenerated.
1101
Neal Norwitz0cbd8052006-08-04 05:09:28 +00001102- Bug #1333982: string/number constants were inappropriately stored
1103 in the byte code and co_consts even if they were not used, ie
1104 immediately popped off the stack.
1105
Georg Brandle9462c72006-08-04 18:03:37 +00001106- Fixed a reference-counting problem in property().

Neil Schemenauer4c6b0d52006-08-16 23:38:05 +00001112- Fix a bug in the ``compiler`` package that caused invalid code to be
1113 generated for generator expressions.
1114
Marc-André Lemburg574cfea2006-08-16 16:11:01 +00001115- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0. The change to
1116 keep it programmatically in sync with the Python version running
1117 the code (introduced in 2.5b3) has been reverted. It will continue
1118 to be maintained manually as static string literal.
1119
Andrew M. Kuchlingc13324e2006-08-16 17:11:18 +00001120- If the Python part of a ctypes callback function returns None,
Thomas Hellerb4a0cf12006-08-16 15:10:12 +00001121 and this cannot be converted to the required C type, an exception is
1122 printed with PyErr_WriteUnraisable. Before this change, the C
Andrew M. Kuchlingc13324e2006-08-16 17:11:18 +00001123 callback returned arbitrary values to the calling code.
Thomas Hellerb4a0cf12006-08-16 15:10:12 +00001124
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001125- The __repr__ method of a NULL ctypes.py_object() no longer raises
Thomas Hellerb0aa98f2006-08-16 14:07:44 +00001126 an exception.
1127
Tim Peterscbdd3502006-09-05 01:47:53 +00001128- uuid.UUID now has a bytes_le attribute. This returns the UUID in
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001129 little-endian byte order for Windows. In addition, uuid.py gained some
Anthony Baxter58179592006-08-16 13:08:25 +00001130 workarounds for clocks with low resolution, to stop the code yielding
1131 duplicate UUIDs.
1132
Kurt B. Kaiserd112bc72006-08-16 05:01:42 +00001133- Patch #1540892: site.py Quitter() class attempts to close sys.stdin
1134 before raising SystemExit, allowing IDLE to honor quit() and exit().
1135
Neal Norwitzbf8c1952006-08-15 04:14:57 +00001136- Bug #1224621: make tabnanny recognize IndentationErrors raised by tokenize.

1223-----------------
1224
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001225- _PyWeakref_GetWeakrefCount() now returns a Py_ssize_t; it previously
Neal Norwitzc5e060d2006-08-02 06:14:22 +00001226 returned a long (see PEP 353).
1227
Neal Norwitzf71ec5a2006-07-30 06:57:04 +00001228- Bug #1515471: string.replace() accepts character buffers again.
1229
Neal Norwitz07aadb12006-07-30 06:55:48 +00001230- Add PyErr_WarnEx() so C code can pass the stacklevel to warnings.warn().
1231 This provides the proper warning for struct.pack().
1232 PyErr_Warn() is now deprecated in favor of PyErr_WarnEx().
1233
Neal Norwitz0d62a062006-07-30 06:53:31 +00001234- Patch #1531113: Fix augmented assignment with yield expressions.
1235 Also fix a SystemError when trying to assign to yield expressions.
1236
Phillip J. Ebyf7575d02006-07-28 21:12:07 +00001237- Bug #1529871: The speed enhancement patch #921466 broke Python's compliance
1238 with PEP 302. This was fixed by adding an ``imp.NullImporter`` type that is
1239 used in ``sys.path_importer_cache`` to cache non-directory paths and avoid
1240 excessive filesystem operations during imports.
1241
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +00001242- Bug #1521947: When checking for overflow, ``PyOS_strtol()`` used some
1243 operations on signed longs that are formally undefined by C.
1244 Unfortunately, at least one compiler now cares about that, so complicated
1245 the code to make that compiler happy again.
1246
Martin v. Löwis982e9fe2006-07-24 12:54:17 +00001247- Bug #1524310: Properly report errors from FindNextFile in os.listdir.

1258
Georg Brandl9dceedb2006-07-12 15:31:17 +00001259- Patch #1521179: Python now accepts the standard options ``--help`` and
1260 ``--version`` as well as ``/?`` on Windows.
1261
Andrew M. Kuchling93c928e2006-07-26 17:19:39 +00001262- Bug #1520864: unpacking singleton tuples in a 'for' loop (for x, in) works
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +00001263 again. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc magic number.
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +00001264 This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5b3 will be regenerated.
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +00001265
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +00001266- Bug #1524317: Compiling Python ``--without-threads`` failed.
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001267 The Python core compiles again, and, in a build without threads, the
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +00001268 new ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dictionary with one entry,

1278 for stream decoder, but final=True for the decode function.
1279
Georg Brandl07fec3a2006-08-01 18:49:24 +00001280- os.urandom no longer masks unrelated exceptions like SystemExit or
1281 KeyboardInterrupt.
1282
Tim Peters4643c2f2006-08-10 22:45:34 +00001283- Bug #1525866: Don't copy directory stat times in

1285
Georg Brandle34ac7c2006-07-30 11:07:23 +00001286- Bug #1002398: The documentation for os.path.sameopenfile now correctly
1287 refers to file descriptors, not file objects.
1288
Tim Peterscbdd3502006-09-05 01:47:53 +00001289- The renaming of the xml package to xmlcore, and the import hackery done
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001290 to make it appear at both names, has been removed. Bug #1511497,
Fred Drakefbdeaad2006-07-29 16:56:15 +00001291 #1513611, and probably others.
1292
Georg Brandledd9b0d2006-07-29 09:33:26 +00001293- Bug #1441397: The compiler module now recognizes module and function
1294 docstrings correctly as it did in Python 2.4.
1295
Tim Peters6f681472006-07-27 23:44:37 +00001296- Bug #1529297: The rewrite of doctest for Python 2.4 unintentionally
1297 lost that tests are sorted by name before being run. This rarely
1298 matters for well-written tests, but can create baffling symptoms if
1299 side effects from one test to the next affect outcomes. ``DocTestFinder``
1300 has been changed to sort the list of tests it returns.
1301
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001302- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0, and is now kept
Martin v. Löwis1f30c372006-07-30 13:14:05 +00001303 in sync with sys.version_info[:3].

Martin v. Löwis9298eff2006-07-26 12:12:56 +00001305- Bug #978833: Really close underlying socket in _socketobject.close.
1306
Georg Brandldb232dc2006-08-20 13:15:43 +00001307- Bug #1459963: urllib and urllib2 now normalize HTTP header names with
1308 title().
Georg Brandl0619a322006-07-26 07:40:17 +00001309
Georg Brandlcf0c1722006-07-26 07:23:32 +00001310- Patch #1525766: In pkgutil.walk_packages, correctly pass the onerror callback
1311 to recursive calls and call it with the failing package name.
1312
Martin v. Löwis0b483032006-07-25 09:53:12 +00001313- Bug #1525817: Don't truncate short lines in IDLE's tool tips.
1314
Georg Brandlc13c34c2006-07-24 14:09:56 +00001315- Patch #1515343: Fix printing of deprecated string exceptions with a
1316 value in the traceback module.
1317
Greg Ward48fae7a2006-07-23 16:05:51 +00001318- Resync optparse with Optik 1.5.3: minor tweaks for/to tests.
1319
Martin v. Löwis426f4a12006-07-18 17:46:31 +00001320- Patch #1524429: Use repr() instead of backticks in Tkinter again.
1321
Brett Cannoncaebe222006-07-18 04:41:36 +00001322- Bug #1520914: Change time.strftime() to accept a zero for any position in its
1323 argument tuple. For arguments where zero is illegal, the value is forced to
1324 the minimum value that is correct. This is to support an undocumented but
1325 common way people used to fill in inconsequential information in the time
1326 tuple pre-2.4.
1327
Bob Ippolito5ea4bf12006-07-15 16:53:15 +00001328- Patch #1220874: Update the binhex module for Mach-O.
1329
Barry Warsawb110bad2006-07-21 14:51:07 +00001330- The email package has improved RFC 2231 support, specifically for
1331 recognizing the difference between encoded (name*0*=<blah>) and non-encoded
1332 (name*0=<blah>) parameter continuations. This may change the types of
1333 values returned from email.message.Message.get_param() and friends.
1334 Specifically in some cases where non-encoded continuations were used,
1335 get_param() used to return a 3-tuple of (None, None, string) whereas now it
1336 will just return the string (since non-encoded continuations don't have
1337 charset and language parts).
1338
1339 Also, whereas % values were decoded in all parameter continuations, they are
1340 now only decoded in encoded parameter parts.
1341
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +00001342- Bug #1517990: IDLE keybindings on MacOS X now work correctly
1343
1344- Bug #1517996: IDLE now longer shows the default Tk menu when a
1345 path browser, class browser or debugger is the frontmost window on MacOS X
1346
Barry Warsaw00decd72006-07-27 23:43:15 +00001347- Patch #1520294: Support for getset and member descriptors in types.py,
1348 inspect.py, and pydoc.py. Specifically, this allows for querying the type
1349 of an object against these built-in types and more importantly, for getting
1350 their docstrings printed in the interactive interpreter's help() function.

1358 caught correctly. Previously, the exception was not caught.
1359
Thomas Heller1393d6a2006-07-28 21:43:20 +00001360- Patch #1529514: The _ctypes extension is now compiled on more

1362
Tim Peters9cab5932006-07-28 00:30:00 +00001363- The ``__reduce__()`` method of the new ``collections.defaultdict`` had

1373 arrays, without the need to check the array size before.
1374

1378
Thomas Heller47d7a062006-07-12 08:43:47 +00001379- Bug #1467450: On Mac OS X 10.3, RTLD_GLOBAL is now used as the

1388
Matt Flemingec926502006-07-28 11:27:27 +00001389- Bug #1526460: Fix socketmodule compile on NetBSD as it has a different

1413
1414- Bug #1527397: PythonLauncher now launches scripts with the working directory
1415 set to the directory that contains the script instead of the user home
Tim Peters4643c2f2006-08-10 22:45:34 +00001416 directory. That latter was an implementation accident and not what users

Neal Norwitz28746ab2006-07-09 22:14:42 +00001446- On 64 bit systems, int literals that use less than 64 bits are

1451
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +00001452- New function ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dict mapping thread
1453 id to topmost thread stack frame. This is for expert use, and is
1454 especially useful for debugging application deadlocks. The functionality
1455 was previously available in Fazal Majid's ``threadframe`` extension

Thomas Woutersadd19112006-07-05 11:03:49 +00001475- string.Template() now correctly handles tuple-values. Previously,
1476 multi-value tuples would raise an exception and single-value tuples would
1477 be treated as the value they contain, instead.

1506 category be either a types.ClassType and a subclass of Warning. The proper
1507 check is just that it is a subclass with Warning as the documentation states.
1508
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +00001509- The compiler module now correctly compiles the new try-except-finally

1525 means that select() on sockets > FD_SETSIZE (typically 1024) work again.
1526 The patch makes sockets use poll() internally where available.
Anthony Baxter93ab5fa2006-07-11 02:04:09 +00001527
Thomas Hellerb9cb84f2006-07-10 11:17:37 +00001528- Assigning None to pointer type fields in ctypes structures possible

1535 integer or long, without range checking.
1536
1537- Patch #1517790: It is now possible to use custom objects in the ctypes
1538 foreign function argtypes sequence as long as they provide a from_param
1539 method, no longer is it required that the object is a ctypes type.

Thomas Woutersfc34f6c2006-07-06 10:48:28 +00001561 Previously, the slight difference could cause compilation errors of the
1562 'zlib' module on systems with more than one version of zlib.
1563
Martin v. Löwis4cbd05c2006-07-06 07:05:21 +00001564- The MSI compileall step was fixed to also support a TARGETDIR

1595Core and builtins
1596-----------------
1597
Georg Brandla56b9152006-06-19 06:35:54 +00001598- Patch #1507676: Error messages returned by invalid abstract object operations
1599 (such as iterating over an integer) have been improved and now include the
1600 type of the offending object to help with debugging.
1601
Brett Cannonea3912b2006-06-13 21:46:41 +00001602- Bug #992017: A classic class that defined a __coerce__() method that returned
1603 its arguments swapped would infinitely recurse and segfault the interpreter.
1604
Neal Norwitz909eb122006-06-12 02:13:21 +00001605- Fix the socket tests so they can be run concurrently.
1606
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +00001607- Removed 5 integers from C frame objects (PyFrameObject).
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +00001608 f_nlocals, f_ncells, f_nfreevars, f_stack_size, f_restricted.
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +00001609
Brett Cannon22565aa2006-06-09 22:31:23 +00001610- Bug #532646: object.__call__() will continue looking for the __call__
1611 attribute on objects until one without one is found. This leads to recursion
1612 when you take a class and set its __call__ attribute to an instance of the
1613 class. Originally fixed for classic classes, but this fix is for new-style.
1614 Removes the infinite_rec_3 crasher.
1615
Georg Brandl24250812006-06-09 18:45:48 +00001616- The string and unicode methods startswith() and endswith() now accept
1617 a tuple of prefixes/suffixes to look for. Implements RFE #1491485.
1618
Brett Cannonde3b0522006-06-08 17:00:45 +00001619- Buffer objects, at the C level, never used the char buffer
1620 implementation even when the char buffer for the wrapped object was
1621 explicitly requested (originally returned the read or write buffer).
1622 Now a TypeError is raised if the char buffer is not present but is
1623 requested.
1624
Georg Brandlddbaa662006-06-04 21:56:52 +00001625- Patch #1346214: Statements like "if 0: suite" are now again optimized
1626 away like they were in Python 2.4.
1627
Georg Brandlb7c8f542006-05-27 12:30:25 +00001628- Builtin exceptions are now full-blown new-style classes instead of
1629 instances pretending to be classes, which speeds up exception handling
1630 by about 80% in comparison to 2.5a2.
1631
Martin v. Löwisd004fc82006-05-27 08:36:52 +00001632- Patch #1494554: Update unicodedata.numeric and unicode.isnumeric to
1633 Unicode 4.1.
1634
Georg Brandlf4ef1162006-05-26 18:03:31 +00001635- Patch #921466: sys.path_importer_cache is now used to cache valid and
1636 invalid file paths for the built-in import machinery which leads to
1637 fewer open calls on startup.
1638
Tim Peters696cf432006-05-24 21:10:40 +00001639- Patch #1442927: ``long(str, base)`` is now up to 6x faster for non-power-
1640 of-2 bases. The largest speedup is for inputs with about 1000 decimal
1641 digits. Conversion from non-power-of-2 bases remains quadratic-time in
1642 the number of input digits (it was and remains linear-time for bases
1643 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32).
1644
Tim Petersb713ec22006-05-23 18:45:30 +00001645- Bug #1334662: ``int(string, base)`` could deliver a wrong answer
1646 when ``base`` was not 2, 4, 8, 10, 16 or 32, and ``string`` represented
1647 an integer close to ``sys.maxint``. This was repaired by patch
1648 #1335972, which also gives a nice speedup.
1649
Richard Jonescebbefc2006-05-23 18:28:17 +00001650- Patch #1337051: reduced size of frame objects.
1651
1652- PyErr_NewException now accepts a tuple of base classes as its
1653 "base" parameter.
1654
Richard Jones7c88dcc2006-05-23 10:37:38 +00001655- Patch #876206: function call speedup by retaining allocated frame
1656 objects.
1657
Georg Brandl7b90e162006-05-18 07:01:27 +00001658- Bug #1462152: file() now checks more thoroughly for invalid mode
1659 strings and removes a possible "U" before passing the mode to the
1660 C library function.
1661
Neal Norwitz1004a532006-05-15 07:17:23 +00001662- Patch #1488312, Fix memory alignment problem on SPARC in unicode
1663
Neal Norwitz373f0a72006-05-15 07:04:36 +00001664- Bug #1487966: Fix SystemError with conditional expression in assignment
1665
Martin v. Löwis879768d2006-05-11 13:28:43 +00001666- WindowsError now has two error code attributes: errno, which carries
1667 the error values from errno.h, and winerror, which carries the error
1668 values from winerror.h. Previous versions put the winerror.h values
1669 (from GetLastError()) into the errno attribute.
1670
Martin v. Löwis77736712006-05-04 05:51:03 +00001671- Patch #1475845: Raise IndentationError for unexpected indent.
1672
Neal Norwitzc4edb0e2006-05-02 04:43:14 +00001673- Patch #1479181: split open() and file() from being aliases for each other.
1674
Tim Peters44bd9862006-06-01 13:49:23 +00001675- Patch #1497053 & bug #1275608: Exceptions occurring in ``__eq__()``
1676 methods were always silently ignored by dictionaries when comparing keys.
1677 They are now passed through (except when using the C API function
1678 ``PyDict_GetItem()``, whose semantics did not change).
1679
1680- Bug #1456209: In some obscure cases it was possible for a class with a
1681 custom ``__eq__()`` method to confuse dict internals when class instances
1682 were used as a dict's keys and the ``__eq__()`` method mutated the dict.
1683 No, you don't have any code that did this ;-)

1691
Brett Cannon6ee7d012006-06-08 16:23:04 +00001692- Change binascii.hexlify to accept a read-only buffer instead of only a char
1693 buffer and actually follow its documentation.

Nick Coghlanc649ec52006-05-29 12:43:05 +00001697- Patch #1478788 (modified version): The functional extension module has
1698 been renamed to _functools and a functools Python wrapper module added.
1699 This provides a home for additional function related utilities that are
1700 not specifically about functional programming. See PEP 309.

1713 (up to the system limit of 32K characters).
1714
1715- Use Win32 API to implement os.{access,chdir,chmod,mkdir,remove,rename,rmdir,utime}.
1716 As a result, these functions now raise WindowsError instead of OSError.
1717
Tim Peters7a822da2006-05-25 21:50:17 +00001718- ``time.clock()`` on Win64 should use the high-performance Windows

1720 Windows platforms).
1721
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00001722- Calling Tk_Init twice is refused if the first call failed as that

1779 double-byte encodings.
1780
Tim Peters43898b42006-06-14 04:09:25 +00001781- ``difflib``'s ``SequenceMatcher.get_matching_blocks()`` was changed to
1782 guarantee that adjacent triples in the return list always describe
1783 non-adjacent blocks. Previously, a pair of matching blocks could end
1784 up being described by multiple adjacent triples that formed a partition
1785 of the matching pair.
1786
Greg Ward0e0c9f42006-06-11 16:24:11 +00001787- Bug #1498146: fix optparse to handle Unicode strings in option help,
1788 description, and epilog.

1802 ``doctest.is_private()`` function, both deprecated in 2.4, were removed.
Tim Petersbf0400a2006-06-05 01:43:03 +00001803
Martin v. Löwis3f767792006-06-04 19:36:28 +00001804- Patch #1359618: Speed up charmap encoder by using a trie structure
1805 for lookup.
1806
Tim Petersd609b1a2006-06-02 23:22:51 +00001807- The functions in the ``pprint`` module now sort dictionaries by key
1808 before computing the display. Before 2.5, ``pprint`` sorted a dictionary
1809 if and only if its display required more than one line, although that
1810 wasn't documented. The new behavior increases predictability; e.g.,
1811 using ``pprint.pprint(a_dict)`` in a doctest is now reliable.

1831 tarfiles.
1832
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00001833- Patch #721464: pdb.Pdb instances can now be given explicit stdin and
1834 stdout arguments, making it possible to redirect input and output

1890
Thomas Heller1b046642006-04-18 18:51:06 +00001891- Bug #1465834: 'bdist_wininst preinstall script support' was fixed
1892 by converting these apis from macros into exported functions again:
1893
1894 PyParser_SimpleParseFile PyParser_SimpleParseString PyRun_AnyFile
1895 PyRun_AnyFileEx PyRun_AnyFileFlags PyRun_File PyRun_FileEx

1899
Martin v. Löwis45294a92006-04-18 06:24:08 +00001900- Under COUNT_ALLOCS, types are not necessarily immortal anymore.
1901
Martin v. Löwis19ab6c92006-04-16 18:55:50 +00001902- All uses of PyStructSequence_InitType have been changed to initialize
1903 the type objects only once, even if the interpreter is initialized
1904 multiple times.
1905
Neal Norwitz61546162006-04-14 05:20:28 +00001906- Bug #1454485, array.array('u') could crash the interpreter. This was
1907 due to PyArgs_ParseTuple(args, 'u#', ...) trying to convert buffers (strings)
1908 to unicode when it didn't make sense. 'u#' now requires a unicode string.
1909
1910- Py_UNICODE is unsigned. It was always documented as unsigned, but
1911 due to a bug had a signed value in previous versions.
1912
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001913- Patch #837242: ``id()`` of any Python object always gives a positive
1914 number now, which might be a long integer. ``PyLong_FromVoidPtr`` and
1915 ``PyLong_AsVoidPtr`` have been changed accordingly. Note that it has
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001916 never been correct to implement a ``__hash()__`` method that returns the
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001917 ``id()`` of an object:
Martin v. Löwis0bc2ab92006-04-10 20:28:17 +00001918
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001919 def __hash__(self):
1920 return id(self) # WRONG
1921
1922 because a hash result must be a (short) Python int but it was always
1923 possible for ``id()`` to return a Python long. However, because ``id()``
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001924 could return negative values before, on a 32-bit box an ``id()`` result
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001925 was always usable as a hash value before this patch. That's no longer
1926 necessarily so.
1927
1928- Python on OS X 10.3 and above now uses dlopen() (via dynload_shlib.c)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001929 to load extension modules and now provides the dl module. As a result,
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001930 sys.setdlopenflags() now works correctly on these systems. (SF patch
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001931 #1454844)
1932
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001933- Patch #1463867: enhanced garbage collection to allow cleanup of cycles
1934 involving generators that have paused outside of any ``try`` or ``with``
1935 blocks. (In 2.5a1, a paused generator that was part of a reference
1936 cycle could not be garbage collected, regardless of whether it was
1937 paused in a ``try`` or ``with`` block.)

1956- Bug #1332852: bsddb module minimum BerkeleyDB version raised to 3.3

1971 or exception is ignored).
1972
Nick Coghlanda2268f2006-04-24 04:37:15 +00001973- Fixed contextlib.nested to cope with exceptions being raised and

1978 gettext cannot be imported; added ``OptionParser.destroy()`` method;
1979 added ``epilog`` for better help generation).
1980
Tim Peters21fbd572006-04-21 21:18:10 +00001981- Bug #1473760: ``tempfile.TemporaryFile()`` could hang on Windows, when

1983
Phillip J. Eby17a35f92006-04-18 16:45:14 +00001984- The pydoc module now supports documenting packages contained in
1985 .zip or .egg files.
1986

1988 as ``walk_packages()`` to support working with packages that are either
1989 in the filesystem or zip files.
1990
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001991- The mailbox module can now modify and delete messages from

Nick Coghlanc195d8a2006-04-24 03:04:43 +00002073- PEP 343: Added Context Types section to the library reference
2074 and attempted to bring other PEP 343 related documentation into
2075 line with the implementation and/or python-dev discussions.
2076
Tim Peters8dc73d22006-04-24 02:03:16 +00002077- Bug #1337990: clarified that ``doctest`` does not support examples
2078 requiring both expected output and an exception.

2087-----------------
2088
Nick Coghlan43832302006-04-23 17:04:07 +00002089- PEP 338: -m command line switch now delegates to runpy.run_module
2090 allowing it to support modules in packages and zipfiles
2091
Martin v. Löwisc661b882006-04-20 04:54:23 +00002092- On Windows, .DLL is not an accepted file name extension for
2093 extension modules anymore; extensions are only found if they
2094 end in .PYD.
2095
Martin v. Löwisea62d252006-04-03 10:56:49 +00002096- Bug #1421664: sys.stderr.encoding is now set to the same value as
2097 sys.stdout.encoding.
2098
Neal Norwitz92e212f2006-04-03 04:48:37 +00002099- __import__ accepts keyword arguments.
2100
Georg Brandlccadf842006-03-31 18:54:53 +00002101- Patch #1460496: round() now accepts keyword arguments.
2102
Anthony Baxter262c00a2006-03-30 10:53:17 +00002103- Fixed bug #1459029 - unicode reprs were double-escaped.
2104
Hye-Shik Changd478f342006-03-23 12:32:36 +00002105- Patch #1396919: The system scope threads are reenabled on FreeBSD
2106 5.4 and later versions.
2107
Neal Norwitze98ccf62006-03-23 05:39:47 +00002108- Bug #1115379: Compiling a Unicode string with an encoding declaration
2109 now gives a SyntaxError.
2110
Georg Brandlabd1ff82006-03-18 07:59:59 +00002111- Previously, Python code had no easy way to access the contents of a
2112 cell object. Now, a ``cell_contents`` attribute has been added
2113 (closes patch #1170323).
2114
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00002115- Patch #1123430: Python's small-object allocator now returns an arena to
2116 the system ``free()`` when all memory within an arena becomes unused
2117 again. Prior to Python 2.5, arenas (256KB chunks of memory) were never
2118 freed. Some applications will see a drop in virtual memory size now,
2119 especially long-running applications that, from time to time, temporarily
2120 use a large number of small objects. Note that when Python returns an
2121 arena to the platform C's ``free()``, there's no guarantee that the
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00002122 platform C library will in turn return that memory to the operating system.
2123 The effect of the patch is to stop making that impossible, and in tests it
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00002124 appears to be effective at least on Microsoft C and gcc-based systems.
2125 Thanks to Evan Jones for hard work and patience.
2126
Georg Brandl533ff6f2006-03-08 18:09:27 +00002127- Patch #1434038: property() now uses the getter's docstring if there is
2128 no "doc" argument given. This makes it possible to legitimately use
2129 property() as a decorator to produce a read-only property.
2130
Guido van Rossum9aa37ab2006-03-07 18:54:08 +00002131- PEP 357, patch 1436368: add an __index__ method to int/long and a matching
2132 nb_index slot to the PyNumberMethods struct. The slot is consulted instead
2133 of requiring an int or long in slicing and a few other contexts, enabling
2134 other objects (e.g. Numeric Python's integers) to be used as slice indices.
2135
Neal Norwitz995acdf2006-03-07 05:01:00 +00002136- Fixed various bugs reported by Coverity's Prevent tool.
2137
Brett Cannonbf364092006-03-01 04:25:17 +00002138- PEP 352, patch #1104669: Make exceptions new-style objects. Introduced the
2139 new exception base class, BaseException, which has a new message attribute.
2140 KeyboardInterrupt and SystemExit to directly inherit from BaseException now.
2141 Raising a string exception now raises a DeprecationWarning.
2142
Thomas Woutersfb609f42006-02-28 16:37:25 +00002143- Patch #1438387, PEP 328: relative and absolute imports. Imports can now be
2144 explicitly relative, using 'from .module import name' to mean 'from the same
2145 package as this module is in. Imports without dots still default to the
2146 old relative-then-absolute, unless 'from __future__ import
2147 absolute_import' is used.
2148
Brett Cannona7446e32006-02-27 23:39:10 +00002149- Properly check if 'warnings' raises an exception (usually when a filter set
2150 to "error" is triggered) when raising a warning for raising string
2151 exceptions.
2152
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002153- CO_GENERATOR_ALLOWED is no longer defined. This behavior is the default.
Neal Norwitz0023a2f2006-02-27 23:24:48 +00002154 The name was removed from Include/code.h.
2155
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002156- PEP 308: conditional expressions were added: (x if cond else y).
Neal Norwitzeb651252006-02-27 16:47:12 +00002157
Guido van Rossum1968ad32006-02-25 22:38:04 +00002158- Patch 1433928:
2159 - The copy module now "copies" function objects (as atomic objects).
2160 - dict.__getitem__ now looks for a __missing__ hook before raising
2161 KeyError.
2162
Tim Peters84ef21c2006-02-28 20:39:06 +00002163- PEP 343: with statement implemented. Needs ``from __future__ import
2164 with_statement``. Use of 'with' as a variable will generate a warning.
2165 Use of 'as' as a variable will also generate a warning (unless it's
Neal Norwitz055ec242006-02-28 20:06:49 +00002166 part of an import statement).
Guido van Rossum1a5e21e2006-02-28 21:57:43 +00002167 The following objects have __context__ methods:
2168 - The built-in file type.
2169 - The thread.LockType type.
2170 - The following types defined by the threading module:
2171 Lock, RLock, Condition, Semaphore, BoundedSemaphore.
2172 - The decimal.Context class.
Guido van Rossumc2e20742006-02-27 22:32:47 +00002173
Marc-André Lemburgfe4b34c2006-02-19 15:22:22 +00002174- Fix the encodings package codec search function to only search
2175 inside its own package. Fixes problem reported in patch #1433198.
2176
2177 Note: Codec packages should implement and register their own
2178 codec search function. PEP 100 has the details.
2179
Tim Peters9ea89d22006-06-04 03:26:02 +00002180- PEP 353: Using ``Py_ssize_t`` as the index type.
2181
2182- ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` builds now add ``4*sizeof(size_t)`` bytes of debugging
2183 info to each allocated block, since the ``Py_ssize_t`` changes (PEP 353)
2184 now allow Python to make use of memory blocks exceeding 2**32 bytes for
2185 some purposes on 64-bit boxes. A ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` build was limited
2186 to 4-byte allocations before.
Martin v. Löwis18e16552006-02-15 17:27:45 +00002187
Neal Norwitzfc76d632006-01-10 06:03:13 +00002188- Patch #1400181, fix unicode string formatting to not use the locale.
2189 This is how string objects work. u'%f' could use , instead of .
2190 for the decimal point. Now both strings and unicode always use periods.
2191
Neal Norwitz671b9e32006-01-09 07:07:12 +00002192- Bug #1244610, #1392915, fix build problem on OpenBSD 3.7 and 3.8.
2193 configure would break checking curses.h.
2194
Georg Brandlcd4d1e82005-12-27 17:37:07 +00002195- Bug #959576: The pwd module is now builtin. This allows Python to be
2196 built on UNIX platforms without $HOME set.
2197
Neal Norwitzc10978f2005-12-19 06:07:16 +00002198- Bug #1072182, fix some potential problems if characters are signed.
2199
Neal Norwitz5d0ad502005-12-19 04:27:42 +00002200- Bug #889500, fix line number on SyntaxWarning for global declarations.
2201
Neal Norwitzdb83eb32005-12-18 05:29:30 +00002202- Bug #1378022, UTF-8 files with a leading BOM crashed the interpreter.
2203
Neal Norwitze7214a12005-12-18 05:03:17 +00002204- Support for converting hex strings to floats no longer works.
2205 This was not portable. float('0x3') now raises a ValueError.
2206
Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00002207- Patch #1382163: Expose Subversion revision number to Python. New C API
Barry Warsawd3c38ff2006-03-07 09:46:03 +00002208 function Py_GetBuildNumber(). New attribute sys.subversion. Build number
Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00002209 is now displayed in interactive prompt banner.
2210
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00002211- Implementation of PEP 341 - Unification of try/except and try/finally.
2212 "except" clauses can now be written together with a "finally" clause in
Neal Norwitz11ca77e2005-12-17 22:24:12 +00002213 one try statement instead of two nested ones. Patch #1355913.
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00002214
Hye-Shik Chang835b2432005-12-17 04:38:31 +00002215- Bug #1379994: Builtin unicode_escape and raw_unicode_escape codec
2216 now encodes backslash correctly.
2217
Martin v. Löwisb45b3152005-11-28 17:34:23 +00002218- Patch #1350409: Work around signal handling bug in Visual Studio 2005.
2219
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002220- Bug #1281408: Py_BuildValue now works correctly even with unsigned longs
Georg Brandlf06e30a2005-11-24 15:37:42 +00002221 and long longs.
2222
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00002223- SF Bug #1350188, "setdlopenflags" leads to crash upon "import"
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002224 It was possible for dlerror() to return a NULL pointer, so
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002225 it will now use a default error message in this case.
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00002226
Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00002227- Replaced most Unicode charmap codecs with new ones using the
2228 new Unicode translate string feature in the builtin charmap
2229 codec; the codecs were created from the mapping tables available
2230 at ftp.unicode.org and contain a few updates (e.g. the Mac OS
2231 encodings now include a mapping for the Apple logo)
2232
Tim Peterse3547fd2005-12-16 23:13:57 +00002233- Added a few more codecs for Mac OS encodings
Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00002234
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002235- Sped up some Unicode operations.
Neal Norwitzfed9b3e2005-10-21 06:32:02 +00002236
Martin v. Löwisbd260da2006-02-26 19:42:26 +00002237- A new AST parser implementation was completed. The abstract
2238 syntax tree is available for read-only (non-compile) access
Martin v. Löwis577b5b92006-02-27 15:23:19 +00002239 to Python code; an _ast module was added.
Neal Norwitzfed9b3e2005-10-21 06:32:02 +00002240
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002241- SF bug #1167751: fix incorrect code being produced for generator expressions.
Neal Norwitz16af7342005-10-21 06:25:33 +00002242 The following code now raises a SyntaxError: foo(a = i for i in range(10))
2243
Neal Norwitz708e51a2005-10-03 04:48:15 +00002244- SF Bug #976608: fix SystemError when mtime of an imported file is -1.
2245
Neal Norwitz11bd1192005-10-03 00:54:56 +00002246- SF Bug #887946: fix segfault when redirecting stdin from a directory.
2247 Provide a warning when a directory is passed on the command line.
2248
Neal Norwitz40d37812005-10-02 01:48:49 +00002249- Fix segfault with invalid coding.
2250
2251- SF bug #772896: unknown encoding results in MemoryError.
2252
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002253- All iterators now have a Boolean value of True. Formerly, some iterators
Raymond Hettinger6b27cda2005-09-24 21:23:05 +00002254 supported a __len__() method which evaluated to False when the iterator
2255 was empty.
2256
Guido van Rossum630db602005-09-20 18:49:54 +00002257- On 64-bit platforms, when __len__() returns a value that cannot be
2258 represented as a C int, raise OverflowError.
2259
Skip Montanarof8948ca2005-09-19 03:54:46 +00002260- test__locale is skipped on OS X < 10.4 (only partial locale support is
Walter Dörwald6611a8b2005-10-09 19:28:35 +00002261 present).
Skip Montanarof8948ca2005-09-19 03:54:46 +00002262
Georg Brandl80bbf3f2005-09-14 19:38:29 +00002263- SF bug #893549: parsing keyword arguments was broken with a few format
2264 codes.
2265
Guido van Rossum8ee3e5a2005-09-14 18:09:42 +00002266- Changes donated by Elemental Security to make it work on AIX 5.3
2267 with IBM's 64-bit compiler (SF patch #1284289). This also closes SF
2268 bug #105470: test_pwd fails on 64bit system (Opteron).
2269
Guido van Rossum539c6622005-09-14 17:49:54 +00002270- Changes donated by Elemental Security to make it work on HP-UX 11 on
2271 Itanium2 with HP's 64-bit compiler (SF patch #1225212).
2272
Georg Brandl4550b8d2005-08-26 06:43:52 +00002273- Disallow keyword arguments for type constructors that don't use them
Georg Brandl02c42872005-08-26 06:42:30 +00002274 (fixes bug #1119418).
2275
Martin v. Löwisd35edda2005-08-24 08:39:24 +00002276- Forward UnicodeDecodeError into SyntaxError for source encoding errors.
2277
Barry Warsawe2eca0b2005-08-15 18:14:19 +00002278- SF bug #900092: When tracing (e.g. for hotshot), restore 'return' events for
2279 exceptions that cause a function to exit.
2280
Raymond Hettinger9f1a6792005-07-31 01:16:36 +00002281- The implementation of set() and frozenset() was revised to use its
2282 own internal data structure. Memory consumption is reduced by 1/3
2283 and there are modest speed-ups as well. The API is unchanged.
2284
Tim Petersde7990b2005-07-17 23:45:23 +00002285- SF bug #1238681: freed pointer is used in longobject.c:long_pow().
2286
Michael W. Hudson0edc7a02005-07-12 10:21:19 +00002287- SF bug #1229429: PyObject_CallMethod failed to decrement some
2288 reference counts in some error exit cases.
2289
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002290- SF bug #1185883: Python's small-object memory allocator took over
2291 a block managed by the platform C library whenever a realloc specified
2292 a small new size. However, there's no portable way to know then how
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002293 much of the address space following the pointer is valid, so there's no
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002294 portable way to copy data from the C-managed block into Python's
2295 small-object space without risking a memory fault. Python's small-object
2296 realloc now leaves such blocks under the control of the platform C
2297 realloc.
2298
Michael W. Hudsonb8963812005-07-05 15:21:58 +00002299- SF bug #1232517: An overflow error was not detected properly when
2300 attempting to convert a large float to an int in os.utime().
2301
Raymond Hettinger3296e692005-06-29 23:29:56 +00002302- SF bug #1224347: hex longs now print with lowercase letters just
2303 like their int counterparts.
2304
Michael W. Hudson188d4362005-06-20 16:52:57 +00002305- SF bug #1163563: the original fix for bug #1010677 ("thread Module
2306 Breaks PyGILState_Ensure()") broke badly in the case of multiple
2307 interpreter states; back out that fix and do a better job (see
2308 http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-dev/2005-June/054258.html
2309 for a longer write-up of the problem).
2310
Michael W. Hudsondf888462005-06-03 14:41:55 +00002311- SF patch #1180995: marshal now uses a binary format by default when
2312 serializing floats.
2313
Michael W. Hudsonda85a902005-06-01 11:34:22 +00002314- SF patch #1181301: on platforms that appear to use IEEE 754 floats,
2315 the routines that promise to produce IEEE 754 binary representations
2316 of floats now simply copy bytes around.
2317
Skip Montanarobbf12ba2005-05-20 03:07:06 +00002318- bug #967182: disallow opening files with 'wU' or 'aU' as specified by PEP
2319 278.
2320
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00002321- patch #1109424: int, long, float, complex, and unicode now check for the
2322 proper magic slot for type conversions when subclassed. Previously the
2323 magic slot was ignored during conversion. Semantics now match the way
2324 subclasses of str always behaved. int/long/float, conversion of an instance
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00002325 to the base class has been moved to the proper nb_* magic slot and out of
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00002326 PyNumber_*().
Neal Norwitzcfba5f82006-04-25 05:05:03 +00002327 Thanks Walter Drwald.
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00002328
Barry Warsawc8d907c2005-04-19 23:43:40 +00002329- Descriptors defined in C with a PyGetSetDef structure, where the setter is
2330 NULL, now raise an AttributeError when attempting to set or delete the
2331 attribute. Previously a TypeError was raised, but this was inconsistent
2332 with the equivalent pure-Python implementation.
2333
Michael W. Hudson774479c2005-04-18 08:46:17 +00002334- It is now safe to call PyGILState_Release() before
2335 PyEval_InitThreads() (note that if there is reason to believe there
2336 are multiple threads around you still must call PyEval_InitThreads()
2337 before using the Python API; this fix is for extension modules that

Georg Brandl828fdef2006-04-01 08:59:03 +00002606 a DB-API interface in the standard library. You'll need sqlite 3.0.8 or
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002607 later to build this - if you have an earlier version, the C extension
Anthony Baxterc51ee692006-04-01 00:57:31 +00002608 module will not be built.
2609
Tim Petersc17976e2006-04-01 00:26:53 +00002610- Bug #1460340: ``random.sample(dict)`` failed in various ways. Dicts
2611 aren't officially supported here, and trying to use them will probably
2612 raise an exception some day. But dicts have been allowed, and "mostly
2613 worked", so support for them won't go away without warning.
2614
Georg Brandl338ef7d2006-03-31 18:42:16 +00002615- Bug #1445068: getpass.getpass() can now be given an explicit stream
2616 argument to specify where to write the prompt.
2617

2633
Barry Warsaw4d90bbd2006-03-22 02:45:50 +00002634- email 4.0 package now integrated. This is largely the same as the email 3.0
2635 package that was included in Python 2.3, except that PEP 8 module names are
2636 now used (e.g. mail.message instead of email.Message). The MIME classes
2637 have been moved to a subpackage (e.g. email.mime.text instead of
2638 email.MIMEText). The old names are still supported for now. Several
2639 deprecated Message methods have been removed and lots of bugs have been
2640 fixed. More details can be found in the email package documentation.
2641
Walter Dörwald40108c92006-03-27 08:15:44 +00002642- Patches #1436130/#1443155: codecs.lookup() now returns a CodecInfo object
2643 (a subclass of tuple) that provides incremental decoders and encoders
2644 (a way to use stateful codecs without the stream API). Python functions
2645 codecs.getincrementaldecoder() and codecs.getincrementalencoder() as well
2646 as C functions PyCodec_IncrementalEncoder() and PyCodec_IncrementalDecoder()
2647 have been added.

2733 is that SHA-256 is a good choice for the time being, but
2734 that research should continue, and other alternatives may

2914
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002915- Enhancements to the csv module:
2916
2917 + Dialects are now validated by the underlying C code, better
Georg Brandl7eb4b7d2005-07-22 21:49:32 +00002918 reflecting its capabilities, and improving its compliance with
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002919 PEP 305.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002920 + Dialect parameter parsing has been re-implemented to improve error
2921 reporting.
2922 + quotechar=None and quoting=QUOTE_NONE now work the way PEP 305
2923 dictates.
2924 + the parser now removes the escapechar prefix from escaped characters.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002925 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the writer now tests for numeric
Andrew M. Kuchling6db67822006-04-18 14:04:57 +00002926 types, rather than any object that can be represented as a numeric.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002927 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the reader now casts unquoted fields
2928 to floats.
Andrew McNamaraf69d94f2005-01-13 11:30:54 +00002929 + reader now allows \r characters to be quoted (previously it only allowed
2930 \n to be quoted).
Andrew McNamarac89f2842005-01-12 07:44:42 +00002931 + writer doublequote handling improved.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002932 + Dialect classes passed to the module are no longer instantiated by
2933 the module before being parsed (the former validation scheme required
2934 this, but the mechanism was unreliable).
2935 + The dialect registry now contains instances of the internal
2936 C-coded dialect type, rather than references to python objects.
2937 + the internal c-coded dialect type is now immutable.
2938 + register_dialect now accepts the same keyword dialect specifications
2939 as the reader and writer, allowing the user to register dialects
2940 without first creating a dialect class.
2941 + a configurable limit to the size of parsed fields has been added -
2942 previously, an unmatched quote character could result in the entire
2943 file being read into the field buffer before an error was reported.
Andrew McNamara31d88962005-01-12 03:45:10 +00002944 + A new module method csv.field_size_limit() has been added that sets
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002945 the parser field size limit (returning the former limit). The initial
2946 limit is 128kB.
Andrew McNamara7f2053e2005-01-12 11:17:16 +00002947 + A line_num attribute has been added to the reader object, which tracks
2948 the number of lines read from the source iterator. This is not
2949 the same as the number of records returned, as records can span
2950 multiple lines.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002951 + reader and writer objects were not being registered with the cyclic-GC.
2952 This has been fixed.
2953
Brett Cannone6539c42005-01-08 02:43:53 +00002954- _DummyThread objects in the threading module now delete self.__block that is
2955 inherited from _Thread since it uses up a lock allocated by 'thread'. The
2956 lock primitives tend to be limited in number and thus should not be wasted on
2957 a _DummyThread object. Fixes bug #1089632.
2958
Raymond Hettinger97db05d2005-01-07 08:15:41 +00002959- The imghdr module now detects Exif files.
2960

2962 (Bug #951915).
2963
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002964- locale.py now uses an updated locale alias table (built using
2965 Tools/i18n/makelocalealias.py, a tool to parse the X11 locale
2966 alias file); the encoding lookup was enhanced to use Python's
Andrew M. Kuchling88b85822005-08-23 00:57:07 +00002967 encoding alias table.
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002968
Raymond Hettinger3557f422004-12-07 12:02:02 +00002969- moved deprecated modules to Lib/lib-old: whrandom, tzparse, statcache.
2970
Raymond Hettingera6b45cc2004-12-07 07:05:57 +00002971- the pickle module no longer accepts the deprecated None option in the
2972 args tuple returned by __reduce__().
2973
Brett Cannon84667c02004-12-07 03:25:18 +00002974- optparse now optionally imports gettext. This allows its use in setup.py.
2975

2981
Raymond Hettingerf3fa9462004-12-05 01:58:09 +00002982- the filecmp module no longer uses the deprecated use_statcache argument.
2983
Raymond Hettinger664347b2004-12-04 21:21:53 +00002984- unittest.TestCase.run() and unittest.TestSuite.run() can now be successfully
2985 extended or overridden by subclasses. Formerly, the subclassed method would
2986 be ignored by the rest of the module. (Bug #1078905).
2987
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002988- heapq.nsmallest() and heapq.nlargest() now support key= arguments with
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00002989 the same meaning as in list.sort().
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002990
Walter Dörwald36733692004-12-22 12:50:50 +00002991- Bug #1076985: ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` now calls ``read()`` only
2992 once when a size argument is given. This prevents a buffer overflow in the
2993 tokenizer with very long source lines.
2994
Barry Warsaw538561e2006-01-01 21:48:54 +00002995- Bug #1083110: ``zlib.decompress.flush()`` would segfault if called
2996 immediately after creating the object, without any intervening
2997 ``.decompress()`` calls.
Andrew M. Kuchling3b585b32004-12-28 20:10:48 +00002998
Skip Montanaro05885812005-01-16 20:48:27 +00002999- The reconvert.quote function can now emit triple-quoted strings. The
3000 reconvert module now has some simple documentation.
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00003001
Walter Dörwaldaf3b39a2005-02-18 13:22:43 +00003002- ``UserString.MutableString`` now supports negative indices in
3003 ``__setitem__`` and ``__delitem__``
3004
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00003005- Bug #1149508: ``textwrap`` now handles hyphenated numbers (eg. "2004-03-05")
3006 correctly.
3007
Walter Dörwaldbc8e6422005-04-21 21:32:03 +00003008- Partial fixes for SF bugs #1163244 and #1175396: If a chunk read by
3009 ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` has a trailing "\r", read one more
3010 character even if the user has passed a size parameter to get a proper
3011 line ending. Remove the special handling of a "\r\n" that has been split
3012 between two lines.
3013
Walter Dörwalda47d1c02005-08-30 10:23:14 +00003014- Bug #1251300: On UCS-4 builds the "unicode-internal" codec will now complain
3015 about illegal code points. The codec now supports PEP 293 style error
3016 handlers.
3017
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00003018- Bug #1235646: ``codecs.StreamRecoder.next()`` now reencodes the data it reads
Walter Dörwaldc5238b82005-09-01 11:56:53 +00003019 from the input stream, so that the output is a byte string in the correct
3020 encoding instead of a unicode string.
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00003021
Gustavo Niemeyer6fa0c5a2005-09-14 08:54:39 +00003022- Bug #1202493: Fixing SRE parser to handle '{}' as perl does, rather than
3023 considering it exactly like a '*'.
3024
Walter Dörwald007f8df2005-10-09 19:42:27 +00003025- Bug #1245379: Add "unicode-1-1-utf-7" as an alias for "utf-7" to
3026 ``encodings.aliases``.
Gustavo Niemeyer6fa0c5a2005-09-14 08:54:39 +00003027
Walter Dörwald09f0dd52005-11-21 19:10:07 +00003028- ` uu.encode()`` and ``uu.decode()`` now support unicode filenames.
3029
Gustavo Niemeyer548148812006-01-31 18:34:13 +00003030- Patch #1413711: Certain patterns of differences were making difflib
3031 touch the recursion limit.
3032
Walter Dörwald58917a62006-03-31 15:26:22 +00003033- Bug #947906: An object oriented interface has been added to the calendar
3034 module. It's possible to generate HTML calendar now and the module can be
Walter Dörwald48d5e502006-04-01 07:57:00 +00003035 called as a script (e.g. via ``python -mcalendar``). Localized month and
3036 weekday names can be ouput (even if an exotic encoding is used) using
3037 special classes that use unicode.

3063
Brett Cannon08cd5982005-04-24 22:26:38 +00003064- EXTRA_CFLAGS has been introduced as an environment variable to hold compiler
3065 flags that change binary compatibility. Changes were also made to
3066 distutils.sysconfig to also use the environment variable when used during
Martin v. Löwisd7c795e2005-04-25 07:14:03 +00003067 compilation of the interpreter and of C extensions through distutils.

Bob Ippolitoed233462005-03-29 13:47:59 +00003069- SF patch 1171735: Darwin 8's headers are anal about POSIX compliance,
3070 and linking has changed (prebinding is now deprecated, and libcc_dynamic
3071 no longer exists). This configure patch makes things right.
3072
Martin v. Löwise2713be2005-03-08 15:03:08 +00003073- Bug #1158607: Build with --disable-unicode again.
3074
Brett Cannon46d96232005-02-16 00:07:19 +00003075- spwdmodule.c is built only if either HAVE_GETSPNAM or HAVE_HAVE_GETSPENT is
3076 defined. Discovered as a result of not being able to build on OS X.
3077
Brett Cannon516592f2004-12-07 00:42:59 +00003078- setup.py now uses the directories specified in LDFLAGS using the -L option
3079 and in CPPFLAGS using the -I option for adding library and include
3080 directories, respectively, for compiling extension modules against. This has
3081 led to the core being compiled using the values in CPPFLAGS. It also removes
3082 the need for the special-casing of both DarwinPorts and Fink for darwin since
3083 the proper directories can be specified in LDFLAGS (``-L/sw/lib`` for Fink,
3084 ``-L/opt/local/lib`` for DarwinPorts) and CPPFLAGS (``-I/sw/include`` for
3085 Fink, ``-I/opt/local/include`` for DarwinPorts).
3086
Brett Cannon43802422005-02-10 20:48:03 +00003087- Test in configure.in that checks for tzset no longer dependent on tm->tm_zone
3088 to exist in the struct (not required by either ISO C nor the UNIX 2 spec).
3089 Tests for sanity in tzname when HAVE_TZNAME defined were also defined.
3090 Closes bug #1096244. Thanks Gregory Bond.

3093-----
3094
Tim Petersc9d78aa2006-03-26 23:27:58 +00003095- ``PyMem_{Del, DEL}`` and ``PyMem_{Free, FREE}`` no longer map to
3096 ``PyObject_{Free, FREE}``. They map to the system ``free()`` now. If memory
3097 is obtained via the ``PyObject_`` family, it must be released via the
3098 ``PyObject_`` family, and likewise for the ``PyMem_`` family. This has
3099 always been officially true, but when Python's small-object allocator was
3100 introduced, an attempt was made to cater to a few extension modules
3101 discovered at the time that obtained memory via ``PyObject_New`` but
3102 released it via ``PyMem_DEL``. It's years later, and if such code still
3103 exists it will fail now (probably with segfaults, but calling wrong
3104 low-level memory management functions can yield many symptoms).
3105
