679-----------------
680
Neal Norwitz24b6f202006-09-05 04:43:56 +0000681- Fix infinite recursion when subclassing long and overriding __hash__.
682
683- Fix concatenation (+=) of long strings.
684
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000685- Unicode objects will no longer raise an exception when being
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000686 compared equal or unequal to a string and a UnicodeDecodeError
687 exception occurs, e.g. as result of a decoding failure.
Neal Norwitz56423e52006-08-13 18:11:08 +0000688
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000689 Instead, the equal (==) and unequal (!=) comparison operators will
690 now issue a UnicodeWarning and interpret the two objects as
691 unequal. The UnicodeWarning can be filtered as desired using
692 the warning framework, e.g. silenced completely, turned into an
693 exception, logged, etc.
694
695 Note that compare operators other than equal and unequal will still
696 raise UnicodeDecodeError exceptions as they've always done.
Neal Norwitz8a87f5d2006-08-12 17:03:09 +0000697
Marc-André Lemburg757ea272006-08-14 11:44:34 +0000698- Fix segfault when doing string formatting on subclasses of long.

701 with new-style classes.
702
703- Fix bug related to __len__ functions returning negative values with
704 classic classes.
705
706- Patch #1538606, Fix __index__() clipping. There were some problems
707 discovered with the API and how integers that didn't fit into Py_ssize_t
708 were handled. This patch attempts to provide enough alternatives
709 to effectively use __index__.
710
Martin v. Löwisab2f8f72006-08-09 07:57:39 +0000711- Bug #1536021: __hash__ may now return long int; the final hash

717 sys.stdin is closed.
718
Thomas Heller74d36f02006-08-04 18:17:40 +0000719- On Windows, the PyErr_Warn function is now exported from
720 the Python dll again.
721
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000722- Bug #1191458: tracing over for loops now produces a line event
723 on each iteration. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc
724 magic number. This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5c1
725 will be regenerated.
726
Neal Norwitz0cbd8052006-08-04 05:09:28 +0000727- Bug #1333982: string/number constants were inappropriately stored
728 in the byte code and co_consts even if they were not used, ie
729 immediately popped off the stack.

739
Marc-André Lemburg574cfea2006-08-16 16:11:01 +0000740- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0. The change to

Andrew M. Kuchlingc13324e2006-08-16 17:11:18 +0000745- If the Python part of a ctypes callback function returns None,
Thomas Hellerb4a0cf12006-08-16 15:10:12 +0000746 and this cannot be converted to the required C type, an exception is
747 printed with PyErr_WriteUnraisable. Before this change, the C
Andrew M. Kuchlingc13324e2006-08-16 17:11:18 +0000748 callback returned arbitrary values to the calling code.

757
Kurt B. Kaiserd112bc72006-08-16 05:01:42 +0000758- Patch #1540892: site.py Quitter() class attempts to close sys.stdin

Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000850- _PyWeakref_GetWeakrefCount() now returns a Py_ssize_t; it previously

Neal Norwitzf71ec5a2006-07-30 06:57:04 +0000853- Bug #1515471: string.replace() accepts character buffers again.
854
Neal Norwitz07aadb12006-07-30 06:55:48 +0000855- Add PyErr_WarnEx() so C code can pass the stacklevel to warnings.warn().
856 This provides the proper warning for struct.pack().
857 PyErr_Warn() is now deprecated in favor of PyErr_WarnEx().
858
Neal Norwitz0d62a062006-07-30 06:53:31 +0000859- Patch #1531113: Fix augmented assignment with yield expressions.
860 Also fix a SystemError when trying to assign to yield expressions.
861
Phillip J. Ebyf7575d02006-07-28 21:12:07 +0000862- Bug #1529871: The speed enhancement patch #921466 broke Python's compliance
863 with PEP 302. This was fixed by adding an ``imp.NullImporter`` type that is
864 used in ``sys.path_importer_cache`` to cache non-directory paths and avoid
865 excessive filesystem operations during imports.
866
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +0000867- Bug #1521947: When checking for overflow, ``PyOS_strtol()`` used some
868 operations on signed longs that are formally undefined by C.
869 Unfortunately, at least one compiler now cares about that, so complicated
870 the code to make that compiler happy again.
871

Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000888 again. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc magic number.
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000889 This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5b3 will be regenerated.

Martin v. Löwis961b91b2006-08-02 13:53:55 +0000902- Correction of patch #1455898: In the mbcs decoder, set final=False
903 for stream decoder, but final=True for the decode function.
904
Georg Brandl07fec3a2006-08-01 18:49:24 +0000905- os.urandom no longer masks unrelated exceptions like SystemExit or
906 KeyboardInterrupt.
907
Tim Peters4643c2f2006-08-10 22:45:34 +0000908- Bug #1525866: Don't copy directory stat times in
Martin v. Löwis4e678382006-07-30 13:00:31 +0000909 shutil.copytree on Windows
910
Georg Brandle34ac7c2006-07-30 11:07:23 +0000911- Bug #1002398: The documentation for os.path.sameopenfile now correctly
912 refers to file descriptors, not file objects.
913
Tim Peterscbdd3502006-09-05 01:47:53 +0000914- The renaming of the xml package to xmlcore, and the import hackery done
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000915 to make it appear at both names, has been removed. Bug #1511497,
Fred Drakefbdeaad2006-07-29 16:56:15 +0000916 #1513611, and probably others.
917
Georg Brandledd9b0d2006-07-29 09:33:26 +0000918- Bug #1441397: The compiler module now recognizes module and function
919 docstrings correctly as it did in Python 2.4.
920
Tim Peters6f681472006-07-27 23:44:37 +0000921- Bug #1529297: The rewrite of doctest for Python 2.4 unintentionally
922 lost that tests are sorted by name before being run. This rarely
923 matters for well-written tests, but can create baffling symptoms if
924 side effects from one test to the next affect outcomes. ``DocTestFinder``
925 has been changed to sort the list of tests it returns.
926
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000927- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0, and is now kept

946
Brett Cannoncaebe222006-07-18 04:41:36 +0000947- Bug #1520914: Change time.strftime() to accept a zero for any position in its
948 argument tuple. For arguments where zero is illegal, the value is forced to
949 the minimum value that is correct. This is to support an undocumented but
950 common way people used to fill in inconsequential information in the time
951 tuple pre-2.4.
952
Bob Ippolito5ea4bf12006-07-15 16:53:15 +0000953- Patch #1220874: Update the binhex module for Mach-O.
954
Barry Warsawb110bad2006-07-21 14:51:07 +0000955- The email package has improved RFC 2231 support, specifically for
956 recognizing the difference between encoded (name*0*=<blah>) and non-encoded
957 (name*0=<blah>) parameter continuations. This may change the types of
958 values returned from email.message.Message.get_param() and friends.
959 Specifically in some cases where non-encoded continuations were used,
960 get_param() used to return a 3-tuple of (None, None, string) whereas now it
961 will just return the string (since non-encoded continuations don't have
962 charset and language parts).
963
964 Also, whereas % values were decoded in all parameter continuations, they are
965 now only decoded in encoded parameter parts.
966
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +0000967- Bug #1517990: IDLE keybindings on MacOS X now work correctly
968
969- Bug #1517996: IDLE now longer shows the default Tk menu when a
970 path browser, class browser or debugger is the frontmost window on MacOS X
971
Barry Warsaw00decd72006-07-27 23:43:15 +0000972- Patch #1520294: Support for getset and member descriptors in types.py,
973 inspect.py, and pydoc.py. Specifically, this allows for querying the type
974 of an object against these built-in types and more importantly, for getting
975 their docstrings printed in the interactive interpreter's help() function.

984
Thomas Heller1393d6a2006-07-28 21:43:20 +0000985- Patch #1529514: The _ctypes extension is now compiled on more

987
Tim Peters9cab5932006-07-28 00:30:00 +0000988- The ``__reduce__()`` method of the new ``collections.defaultdict`` had

990
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +0000991- Bug #1471938: Fix curses module build problem on Solaris 8; patch by

Thomas Hellerce049a02006-07-14 17:51:14 +0000996- Patch #1521817: Index range checking on ctypes arrays containing
997 exactly one element enabled again. This allows iterating over these
998 arrays, without the need to check the array size before.
999
Thomas Heller6e1ad2e2006-07-13 17:05:13 +00001000- Bug #1521375: When the code in ctypes.util.find_library was
Andrew M. Kuchlingb7eca832006-07-13 17:37:26 +00001001 run with root privileges, it could overwrite or delete
Thomas Heller2bdf29e2006-07-13 17:01:14 +00001002 /dev/null in certain cases; this is now fixed.
1003
Thomas Heller47d7a062006-07-12 08:43:47 +00001004- Bug #1467450: On Mac OS X 10.3, RTLD_GLOBAL is now used as the
1005 default mode for loading shared libraries in ctypes.
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +00001006
Thomas Hellerb4dc2ef2006-07-13 09:53:47 +00001007- Because of a misspelled preprocessor symbol, ctypes was always
1008 compiled without thread support; this is now fixed.
1009
Gregory P. Smith641cddf2006-07-28 01:35:25 +00001010- pybsddb Bug #1527939: bsddb module DBEnv dbremove and dbrename
1011 methods now allow their database parameter to be None as the
1012 sleepycat API allows.
1013
Matt Flemingec926502006-07-28 11:27:27 +00001014- Bug #1526460: Fix socketmodule compile on NetBSD as it has a different
1015 bluetooth API compared with Linux and FreeBSD.
1016
Brett Cannonf23ad3d2006-07-25 17:32:20 +00001017Tests
1018-----
1019
1020- Bug #1501330: Change test_ossaudiodev to be much more tolerant in terms of
1021 how long the test file should take to play. Now accepts taking 2.93 secs
1022 (exact time) +/- 10% instead of the hard-coded 3.1 sec.
1023
Georg Brandl4793aa32006-07-28 18:31:39 +00001024- Patch #1529686: The standard tests ``test_defaultdict``, ``test_iterlen``,
1025 ``test_uuid`` and ``test_email_codecs`` didn't actually run any tests when
1026 run via ``regrtest.py``. Now they do.

1036- PythonLauncher now works correctly when the path to the script contains
1037 characters that are treated specially by the shell (such as quotes).
1038
1039- Bug #1527397: PythonLauncher now launches scripts with the working directory
1040 set to the directory that contains the script instead of the user home
Tim Peters4643c2f2006-08-10 22:45:34 +00001041 directory. That latter was an implementation accident and not what users

1055
Neil Schemenauer0e07b602006-07-09 16:16:34 +00001056- Bug #1501934: The scope of global variables that are locally assigned
1057 using augmented assignment is now correctly determined.
1058
Martin v. Löwisd5cfa542006-07-03 13:47:40 +00001059- Bug #927248: Recursive method-wrapper objects can now safely
1060 be released.
1061
Martin v. Löwisfcfff0a2006-07-03 12:19:50 +00001062- Bug #1417699: Reject locale-specific decimal point in float()
1063 and atof().
1064
Hye-Shik Change6a1cb92006-06-23 21:16:18 +00001065- Bug #1511381: codec_getstreamcodec() in codec.c is corrected to
1066 omit a default "error" argument for NULL pointer. This allows
1067 the parser to take a codec from cjkcodecs again.
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +00001068
Neal Norwitzfb48afa2006-07-08 05:31:37 +00001069- Bug #1519018: 'as' is now validated properly in import statements.
1070
Neal Norwitz28746ab2006-07-09 22:14:42 +00001071- On 64 bit systems, int literals that use less than 64 bits are
1072 now ints rather than longs.
1073
Neal Norwitzed657552006-07-10 00:04:44 +00001074- Bug #1512814, Fix incorrect lineno's when code at module scope
1075 started after line 256.
1076
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +00001077- New function ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dict mapping thread
1078 id to topmost thread stack frame. This is for expert use, and is
1079 especially useful for debugging application deadlocks. The functionality
1080 was previously available in Fazal Majid's ``threadframe`` extension
1081 module, but it wasn't possible to do this in a wholly threadsafe way from
1082 an extension.

1091
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +00001092- Bug #1508010: msvccompiler now requires the DISTUTILS_USE_SDK
Martin v. Löwis8d656812006-07-10 07:23:48 +00001093 environment variable to be set in order to the SDK environment
1094 for finding the compiler, include files, etc.

1099
Thomas Woutersadd19112006-07-05 11:03:49 +00001100- string.Template() now correctly handles tuple-values. Previously,
1101 multi-value tuples would raise an exception and single-value tuples would
1102 be treated as the value they contain, instead.
1103
Martin v. Löwisede77f52006-07-03 13:01:35 +00001104- Bug #822974: Honor timeout in telnetlib.{expect,read_until}

1111 degrees and radians.
1112
Martin v. Löwis4c4300d2006-07-03 10:05:30 +00001113- Reimplement turtle.circle using a polyline, to allow correct
Martin v. Löwis2b88f632006-07-03 10:19:49 +00001114 filling of arcs.
Martin v. Löwis4c4300d2006-07-03 10:05:30 +00001115

1118
Martin v. Löwis7596e832006-07-01 15:33:37 +00001119- Bug #1513223: .close() of a _socketobj now releases the underlying
1120 socket again, which then gets closed as it becomes unreferenced.
1121
Fred Drake10497c82006-06-29 02:57:48 +00001122- Bug #1504333: Make sgmllib support angle brackets in quoted
1123 attribute values.
1124
1125- Bug #853506: Fix IPv6 address parsing in unquoted attributes in
1126 sgmllib ('[' and ']' were not accepted).
1127
Georg Brandl1be63af2006-06-28 20:23:25 +00001128- Fix a bug in the turtle module's end_fill function.
1129
Brett Cannon53ab5b72006-06-22 16:49:14 +00001130- Bug #1510580: The 'warnings' module improperly required that a Warning
1131 category be either a types.ClassType and a subclass of Warning. The proper
1132 check is just that it is a subclass with Warning as the documentation states.
1133
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +00001134- The compiler module now correctly compiles the new try-except-finally

1136
Neal Norwitz60373cd2006-06-22 06:30:50 +00001137- The wsgiref package is now installed properly on Unix.
1138
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +00001139- A bug was fixed in logging.config.fileConfig() which caused a crash on
1140 shutdown when fileConfig() was called multiple times.
1141
Gerhard Häring762fbd32006-07-02 17:48:30 +00001142- The sqlite3 module did cut off data from the SQLite database at the first
1143 null character before sending it to a custom converter. This has been fixed
1144 now.
1145
Neal Norwitz0f8b31a2006-06-28 06:28:31 +00001146Extension Modules
1147-----------------
1148
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +00001149- #1494314: Fix a regression with high-numbered sockets in 2.4.3. This
1150 means that select() on sockets > FD_SETSIZE (typically 1024) work again.
1151 The patch makes sockets use poll() internally where available.
Anthony Baxter93ab5fa2006-07-11 02:04:09 +00001152
Thomas Hellerb9cb84f2006-07-10 11:17:37 +00001153- Assigning None to pointer type fields in ctypes structures possible
1154 overwrote the wrong fields, this is fixed now.
1155
1156- Fixed a segfault in _ctypes when ctypes.wintypes were imported
1157 on non-Windows platforms.
1158
1159- Bug #1518190: The ctypes.c_void_p constructor now accepts any
1160 integer or long, without range checking.
1161
1162- Patch #1517790: It is now possible to use custom objects in the ctypes
1163 foreign function argtypes sequence as long as they provide a from_param
1164 method, no longer is it required that the object is a ctypes type.
1165
1166- The '_ctypes' extension module now works when Python is configured
1167 with the --without-threads option.
1168
Martin v. Löwisee1e06d2006-07-02 18:44:00 +00001169- Bug #1513646: os.access on Windows now correctly determines write

1173 a KeyboardInterrupt.
1174
Neal Norwitza12aa882006-07-06 06:45:08 +00001175- Bug #1296433: parsing XML with a non-default encoding and
1176 a CharacterDataHandler could crash the interpreter in pyexpat.

1184
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +00001185- 'configure' now detects the zlib library the same way as distutils.
Thomas Woutersfc34f6c2006-07-06 10:48:28 +00001186 Previously, the slight difference could cause compilation errors of the
1187 'zlib' module on systems with more than one version of zlib.
1188
Martin v. Löwis4cbd05c2006-07-06 07:05:21 +00001189- The MSI compileall step was fixed to also support a TARGETDIR
1190 with spaces in it.
1191

1220Core and builtins
1221-----------------
1222
Georg Brandla56b9152006-06-19 06:35:54 +00001223- Patch #1507676: Error messages returned by invalid abstract object operations
1224 (such as iterating over an integer) have been improved and now include the
1225 type of the offending object to help with debugging.
1226
Brett Cannonea3912b2006-06-13 21:46:41 +00001227- Bug #992017: A classic class that defined a __coerce__() method that returned
1228 its arguments swapped would infinitely recurse and segfault the interpreter.
1229
Neal Norwitz909eb122006-06-12 02:13:21 +00001230- Fix the socket tests so they can be run concurrently.
1231
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +00001232- Removed 5 integers from C frame objects (PyFrameObject).
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +00001233 f_nlocals, f_ncells, f_nfreevars, f_stack_size, f_restricted.
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +00001234
Brett Cannon22565aa2006-06-09 22:31:23 +00001235- Bug #532646: object.__call__() will continue looking for the __call__
1236 attribute on objects until one without one is found. This leads to recursion
1237 when you take a class and set its __call__ attribute to an instance of the
1238 class. Originally fixed for classic classes, but this fix is for new-style.
1239 Removes the infinite_rec_3 crasher.
1240
Georg Brandl24250812006-06-09 18:45:48 +00001241- The string and unicode methods startswith() and endswith() now accept
1242 a tuple of prefixes/suffixes to look for. Implements RFE #1491485.
1243
Brett Cannonde3b0522006-06-08 17:00:45 +00001244- Buffer objects, at the C level, never used the char buffer
1245 implementation even when the char buffer for the wrapped object was
1246 explicitly requested (originally returned the read or write buffer).
1247 Now a TypeError is raised if the char buffer is not present but is
1248 requested.
1249
Georg Brandlddbaa662006-06-04 21:56:52 +00001250- Patch #1346214: Statements like "if 0: suite" are now again optimized
1251 away like they were in Python 2.4.
1252
Georg Brandlb7c8f542006-05-27 12:30:25 +00001253- Builtin exceptions are now full-blown new-style classes instead of
1254 instances pretending to be classes, which speeds up exception handling
1255 by about 80% in comparison to 2.5a2.
1256
Martin v. Löwisd004fc82006-05-27 08:36:52 +00001257- Patch #1494554: Update unicodedata.numeric and unicode.isnumeric to
1258 Unicode 4.1.
1259
Georg Brandlf4ef1162006-05-26 18:03:31 +00001260- Patch #921466: sys.path_importer_cache is now used to cache valid and
1261 invalid file paths for the built-in import machinery which leads to
1262 fewer open calls on startup.
1263
Tim Peters696cf432006-05-24 21:10:40 +00001264- Patch #1442927: ``long(str, base)`` is now up to 6x faster for non-power-
1265 of-2 bases. The largest speedup is for inputs with about 1000 decimal
1266 digits. Conversion from non-power-of-2 bases remains quadratic-time in
1267 the number of input digits (it was and remains linear-time for bases
1268 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32).
1269
Tim Petersb713ec22006-05-23 18:45:30 +00001270- Bug #1334662: ``int(string, base)`` could deliver a wrong answer
1271 when ``base`` was not 2, 4, 8, 10, 16 or 32, and ``string`` represented
1272 an integer close to ``sys.maxint``. This was repaired by patch
1273 #1335972, which also gives a nice speedup.
1274
Richard Jonescebbefc2006-05-23 18:28:17 +00001275- Patch #1337051: reduced size of frame objects.
1276
1277- PyErr_NewException now accepts a tuple of base classes as its
1278 "base" parameter.
1279
Richard Jones7c88dcc2006-05-23 10:37:38 +00001280- Patch #876206: function call speedup by retaining allocated frame
1281 objects.
1282
Georg Brandl7b90e162006-05-18 07:01:27 +00001283- Bug #1462152: file() now checks more thoroughly for invalid mode
1284 strings and removes a possible "U" before passing the mode to the
1285 C library function.
1286
Neal Norwitz1004a532006-05-15 07:17:23 +00001287- Patch #1488312, Fix memory alignment problem on SPARC in unicode
1288
Neal Norwitz373f0a72006-05-15 07:04:36 +00001289- Bug #1487966: Fix SystemError with conditional expression in assignment
1290
Martin v. Löwis879768d2006-05-11 13:28:43 +00001291- WindowsError now has two error code attributes: errno, which carries
1292 the error values from errno.h, and winerror, which carries the error
1293 values from winerror.h. Previous versions put the winerror.h values
1294 (from GetLastError()) into the errno attribute.
1295
Martin v. Löwis77736712006-05-04 05:51:03 +00001296- Patch #1475845: Raise IndentationError for unexpected indent.
1297
Neal Norwitzc4edb0e2006-05-02 04:43:14 +00001298- Patch #1479181: split open() and file() from being aliases for each other.
1299
Tim Peters44bd9862006-06-01 13:49:23 +00001300- Patch #1497053 & bug #1275608: Exceptions occurring in ``__eq__()``
1301 methods were always silently ignored by dictionaries when comparing keys.
1302 They are now passed through (except when using the C API function
1303 ``PyDict_GetItem()``, whose semantics did not change).
1304
1305- Bug #1456209: In some obscure cases it was possible for a class with a
1306 custom ``__eq__()`` method to confuse dict internals when class instances
1307 were used as a dict's keys and the ``__eq__()`` method mutated the dict.
1308 No, you don't have any code that did this ;-)

1314
1315- Patch #1462338: Upgrade pyexpat to expat 2.0.0
1316
Brett Cannon6ee7d012006-06-08 16:23:04 +00001317- Change binascii.hexlify to accept a read-only buffer instead of only a char
1318 buffer and actually follow its documentation.
1319
Hye-Shik Chang58ce5bc2006-06-05 00:59:54 +00001320- Fixed a potentially invalid memory access of CJKCodecs' shift-jis decoder.
1321
Nick Coghlanc649ec52006-05-29 12:43:05 +00001322- Patch #1478788 (modified version): The functional extension module has
1323 been renamed to _functools and a functools Python wrapper module added.
1324 This provides a home for additional function related utilities that are
1325 not specifically about functional programming. See PEP 309.
1326
Bob Ippolito7ccc95a2006-05-23 19:11:34 +00001327- Patch #1493701: performance enhancements for struct module.

1333
Andrew MacIntyre92913322006-06-13 15:04:24 +00001334- Patch #1454481: thread stack size is now tunable at runtime for thread

1336
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00001337- On Win32, os.listdir now supports arbitrarily-long Unicode path names
1338 (up to the system limit of 32K characters).
1339
1340- Use Win32 API to implement os.{access,chdir,chmod,mkdir,remove,rename,rmdir,utime}.
1341 As a result, these functions now raise WindowsError instead of OSError.
1342
Tim Peters7a822da2006-05-25 21:50:17 +00001343- ``time.clock()`` on Win64 should use the high-performance Windows
1344 ``QueryPerformanceCounter()`` now (as was already the case on 32-bit
1345 Windows platforms).
1346
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00001347- Calling Tk_Init twice is refused if the first call failed as that
1348 may deadlock.

1351 accept it without potentially using an uninitialized pointer.
1352
1353- bsddb: added support for the DBEnv.log_stat() and DBEnv.lsn_reset() methods
1354 assuming BerkeleyDB >= 4.0 and 4.4 respectively. [pybsddb project SF

1362
Gregory P. Smith3c228b12006-06-05 23:59:37 +00001363- bsddb: the __len__ method of a DB object has been fixed to return correct
1364 results. It could previously incorrectly return 0 in some cases.
1365 Fixes SF bug 1493322 (pybsddb bug 1184012).
1366
Gregory P. Smithff7d9912006-06-08 05:17:08 +00001367- bsddb: the bsddb.dbtables Modify method now raises the proper error and
1368 aborts the db transaction safely when a modifier callback fails.
1369 Fixes SF python patch/bug #1408584.
1370
Gregory P. Smith506f7b52006-06-15 08:52:32 +00001371- bsddb: multithreaded DB access using the simple bsddb module interface
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +00001372 now works reliably. It has been updated to use automatic BerkeleyDB

1404 double-byte encodings.
1405
Tim Peters43898b42006-06-14 04:09:25 +00001406- ``difflib``'s ``SequenceMatcher.get_matching_blocks()`` was changed to
1407 guarantee that adjacent triples in the return list always describe
1408 non-adjacent blocks. Previously, a pair of matching blocks could end
1409 up being described by multiple adjacent triples that formed a partition
1410 of the matching pair.
1411
Greg Ward0e0c9f42006-06-11 16:24:11 +00001412- Bug #1498146: fix optparse to handle Unicode strings in option help,

1419
Andrew M. Kuchling0873b112006-06-09 16:46:51 +00001420- The wsgiref package has been added to the standard library.
1421
Nick Coghlan676725d2006-06-08 13:54:49 +00001422- The functions update_wrapper() and wraps() have been added to the functools
1423 module. These make it easier to copy relevant metadata from the original
1424 function when writing wrapper functions.
1425

Martin v. Löwis3f767792006-06-04 19:36:28 +00001429- Patch #1359618: Speed up charmap encoder by using a trie structure
1430 for lookup.
1431
Tim Petersd609b1a2006-06-02 23:22:51 +00001432- The functions in the ``pprint`` module now sort dictionaries by key
1433 before computing the display. Before 2.5, ``pprint`` sorted a dictionary
1434 if and only if its display required more than one line, although that
1435 wasn't documented. The new behavior increases predictability; e.g.,
1436 using ``pprint.pprint(a_dict)`` in a doctest is now reliable.
1437
Georg Brandlfd9a4b12006-05-29 20:57:01 +00001438- Patch #1497027: try HTTP digest auth before basic auth in urllib2

1456 tarfiles.
1457
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00001458- Patch #721464: pdb.Pdb instances can now be given explicit stdin and

1509=================================
1510
1511*Release date: 27-APR-2006*
1512
1513Core and builtins
1514-----------------
1515
Thomas Heller1b046642006-04-18 18:51:06 +00001516- Bug #1465834: 'bdist_wininst preinstall script support' was fixed
1517 by converting these apis from macros into exported functions again:
1518
1519 PyParser_SimpleParseFile PyParser_SimpleParseString PyRun_AnyFile
1520 PyRun_AnyFileEx PyRun_AnyFileFlags PyRun_File PyRun_FileEx
1521 PyRun_FileFlags PyRun_InteractiveLoop PyRun_InteractiveOne
1522 PyRun_SimpleFile PyRun_SimpleFileEx PyRun_SimpleString
1523 PyRun_String Py_CompileString
1524
Martin v. Löwis45294a92006-04-18 06:24:08 +00001525- Under COUNT_ALLOCS, types are not necessarily immortal anymore.
1526
Martin v. Löwis19ab6c92006-04-16 18:55:50 +00001527- All uses of PyStructSequence_InitType have been changed to initialize
1528 the type objects only once, even if the interpreter is initialized
1529 multiple times.
1530
Neal Norwitz61546162006-04-14 05:20:28 +00001531- Bug #1454485, array.array('u') could crash the interpreter. This was
1532 due to PyArgs_ParseTuple(args, 'u#', ...) trying to convert buffers (strings)
1533 to unicode when it didn't make sense. 'u#' now requires a unicode string.
1534
1535- Py_UNICODE is unsigned. It was always documented as unsigned, but
1536 due to a bug had a signed value in previous versions.
1537
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001538- Patch #837242: ``id()`` of any Python object always gives a positive
1539 number now, which might be a long integer. ``PyLong_FromVoidPtr`` and
1540 ``PyLong_AsVoidPtr`` have been changed accordingly. Note that it has
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001541 never been correct to implement a ``__hash()__`` method that returns the
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001542 ``id()`` of an object:
Martin v. Löwis0bc2ab92006-04-10 20:28:17 +00001543
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001544 def __hash__(self):
1545 return id(self) # WRONG
1546
1547 because a hash result must be a (short) Python int but it was always
1548 possible for ``id()`` to return a Python long. However, because ``id()``
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001549 could return negative values before, on a 32-bit box an ``id()`` result
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001550 was always usable as a hash value before this patch. That's no longer
1551 necessarily so.
1552
1553- Python on OS X 10.3 and above now uses dlopen() (via dynload_shlib.c)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001554 to load extension modules and now provides the dl module. As a result,
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001555 sys.setdlopenflags() now works correctly on these systems. (SF patch
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001556 #1454844)
1557
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001558- Patch #1463867: enhanced garbage collection to allow cleanup of cycles
1559 involving generators that have paused outside of any ``try`` or ``with``
1560 blocks. (In 2.5a1, a paused generator that was part of a reference
1561 cycle could not be garbage collected, regardless of whether it was
1562 paused in a ``try`` or ``with`` block.)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001563
Anthony Baxter51bcb682006-04-05 14:51:42 +00001564Extension Modules

1569
Georg Brandlbbfe4fa2006-04-11 06:47:43 +00001570- Bug #1467952: os.listdir() now correctly raises an error if readdir()
1571 fails with an error condition.
1572
Gregory P. Smith3adc4aa2006-04-13 19:19:01 +00001573- Fixed bsddb.db.DBError derived exceptions so they can be unpickled.
1574
1575- Bug #1117761: bsddb.*open() no longer raises an exception when using
1576 the cachesize parameter.
1577
1578- Bug #1149413: bsddb.*open() no longer raises an exception when using
1579 a temporary db (file=None) with the 'n' flag to truncate on open.
1580
1581- Bug #1332852: bsddb module minimum BerkeleyDB version raised to 3.3
1582 as older versions cause excessive test failures.
Gregory P. Smith7f5b6f42006-04-08 07:10:51 +00001583
Armin Rigoa9017c32006-04-19 11:50:27 +00001584- Patch #1062014: AF_UNIX sockets under Linux have a special
1585 abstract namespace that is now fully supported.

1591 of the process using the returncode attribute, instead of
1592 abusing errno.
1593
Tim Peters711bf302006-04-25 03:31:36 +00001594- Patch #1475231: ``doctest`` has a new ``SKIP`` option, which causes
1595 a doctest to be skipped (the code is not run, and the expected output
1596 or exception is ignored).
1597
Nick Coghlanda2268f2006-04-24 04:37:15 +00001598- Fixed contextlib.nested to cope with exceptions being raised and
1599 caught inside exit handlers.
1600
Greg Wardab05edc2006-04-23 03:47:58 +00001601- Updated optparse module to Optik 1.5.1 (allow numeric constants in
1602 hex, octal, or binary; add ``append_const`` action; keep going if
1603 gettext cannot be imported; added ``OptionParser.destroy()`` method;
1604 added ``epilog`` for better help generation).
1605
Tim Peters21fbd572006-04-21 21:18:10 +00001606- Bug #1473760: ``tempfile.TemporaryFile()`` could hang on Windows, when
1607 called from a thread spawned as a side effect of importing a module.
1608
Phillip J. Eby17a35f92006-04-18 16:45:14 +00001609- The pydoc module now supports documenting packages contained in
1610 .zip or .egg files.
1611
1612- The pkgutil module now has several new utility functions, such
1613 as ``walk_packages()`` to support working with packages that are either
1614 in the filesystem or zip files.
1615
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001616- The mailbox module can now modify and delete messages from
1617 mailboxes, in addition to simply reading them. Thanks to Gregory
1618 K. Johnson for writing the code, and to the 2005 Google Summer of
1619 Code for funding his work.
Phillip J. Eby17a35f92006-04-18 16:45:14 +00001620

1677
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001678- The test_contextlib test in 2.5a1 wasn't actually run unless you ran
1679 it separately and by hand. It also wasn't cleaning up its changes to
1680 the current Decimal context.
1681
Thomas Woutersabd08882006-04-26 15:53:30 +00001682- regrtest.py now has a -M option to run tests that test the new limits of
1683 containers, on 64-bit architectures. Running these tests is only sensible
1684 on 64-bit machines with more than two gigabytes of memory. The argument
1685 passed is the maximum amount of memory for the tests to use.

Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00001711Core and builtins
1712-----------------
1713
Nick Coghlan43832302006-04-23 17:04:07 +00001714- PEP 338: -m command line switch now delegates to runpy.run_module
1715 allowing it to support modules in packages and zipfiles
1716
Martin v. Löwisc661b882006-04-20 04:54:23 +00001717- On Windows, .DLL is not an accepted file name extension for
1718 extension modules anymore; extensions are only found if they
1719 end in .PYD.
1720
Martin v. Löwisea62d252006-04-03 10:56:49 +00001721- Bug #1421664: sys.stderr.encoding is now set to the same value as
1722 sys.stdout.encoding.
1723
Neal Norwitz92e212f2006-04-03 04:48:37 +00001724- __import__ accepts keyword arguments.
1725
Georg Brandlccadf842006-03-31 18:54:53 +00001726- Patch #1460496: round() now accepts keyword arguments.
1727
Anthony Baxter262c00a2006-03-30 10:53:17 +00001728- Fixed bug #1459029 - unicode reprs were double-escaped.
1729
Hye-Shik Changd478f342006-03-23 12:32:36 +00001730- Patch #1396919: The system scope threads are reenabled on FreeBSD
1731 5.4 and later versions.
1732
Neal Norwitze98ccf62006-03-23 05:39:47 +00001733- Bug #1115379: Compiling a Unicode string with an encoding declaration
1734 now gives a SyntaxError.
1735
Georg Brandlabd1ff82006-03-18 07:59:59 +00001736- Previously, Python code had no easy way to access the contents of a
1737 cell object. Now, a ``cell_contents`` attribute has been added
1738 (closes patch #1170323).
1739
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001740- Patch #1123430: Python's small-object allocator now returns an arena to
1741 the system ``free()`` when all memory within an arena becomes unused
1742 again. Prior to Python 2.5, arenas (256KB chunks of memory) were never
1743 freed. Some applications will see a drop in virtual memory size now,
1744 especially long-running applications that, from time to time, temporarily
1745 use a large number of small objects. Note that when Python returns an
1746 arena to the platform C's ``free()``, there's no guarantee that the
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001747 platform C library will in turn return that memory to the operating system.
1748 The effect of the patch is to stop making that impossible, and in tests it
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001749 appears to be effective at least on Microsoft C and gcc-based systems.
1750 Thanks to Evan Jones for hard work and patience.
1751
Georg Brandl533ff6f2006-03-08 18:09:27 +00001752- Patch #1434038: property() now uses the getter's docstring if there is
1753 no "doc" argument given. This makes it possible to legitimately use
1754 property() as a decorator to produce a read-only property.
1755
Guido van Rossum9aa37ab2006-03-07 18:54:08 +00001756- PEP 357, patch 1436368: add an __index__ method to int/long and a matching
1757 nb_index slot to the PyNumberMethods struct. The slot is consulted instead
1758 of requiring an int or long in slicing and a few other contexts, enabling
1759 other objects (e.g. Numeric Python's integers) to be used as slice indices.
1760
Neal Norwitz995acdf2006-03-07 05:01:00 +00001761- Fixed various bugs reported by Coverity's Prevent tool.
1762
Brett Cannonbf364092006-03-01 04:25:17 +00001763- PEP 352, patch #1104669: Make exceptions new-style objects. Introduced the
1764 new exception base class, BaseException, which has a new message attribute.
1765 KeyboardInterrupt and SystemExit to directly inherit from BaseException now.
1766 Raising a string exception now raises a DeprecationWarning.
1767
Thomas Woutersfb609f42006-02-28 16:37:25 +00001768- Patch #1438387, PEP 328: relative and absolute imports. Imports can now be
1769 explicitly relative, using 'from .module import name' to mean 'from the same
1770 package as this module is in. Imports without dots still default to the
1771 old relative-then-absolute, unless 'from __future__ import
1772 absolute_import' is used.
1773
Brett Cannona7446e32006-02-27 23:39:10 +00001774- Properly check if 'warnings' raises an exception (usually when a filter set
1775 to "error" is triggered) when raising a warning for raising string
1776 exceptions.
1777
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001778- CO_GENERATOR_ALLOWED is no longer defined. This behavior is the default.
Neal Norwitz0023a2f2006-02-27 23:24:48 +00001779 The name was removed from Include/code.h.
1780
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001781- PEP 308: conditional expressions were added: (x if cond else y).
Neal Norwitzeb651252006-02-27 16:47:12 +00001782
Guido van Rossum1968ad32006-02-25 22:38:04 +00001783- Patch 1433928:
1784 - The copy module now "copies" function objects (as atomic objects).
1785 - dict.__getitem__ now looks for a __missing__ hook before raising

Tim Peters9ea89d22006-06-04 03:26:02 +00001805- PEP 353: Using ``Py_ssize_t`` as the index type.
1806
1807- ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` builds now add ``4*sizeof(size_t)`` bytes of debugging
1808 info to each allocated block, since the ``Py_ssize_t`` changes (PEP 353)
1809 now allow Python to make use of memory blocks exceeding 2**32 bytes for
1810 some purposes on 64-bit boxes. A ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` build was limited
1811 to 4-byte allocations before.

Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001915- SF bug #1185883: Python's small-object memory allocator took over
1916 a block managed by the platform C library whenever a realloc specified
1917 a small new size. However, there's no portable way to know then how
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001918 much of the address space following the pointer is valid, so there's no
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001919 portable way to copy data from the C-managed block into Python's
1920 small-object space without risking a memory fault. Python's small-object
1921 realloc now leaves such blocks under the control of the platform C
1922 realloc.

1929
Michael W. Hudson188d4362005-06-20 16:52:57 +00001930- SF bug #1163563: the original fix for bug #1010677 ("thread Module

Michael W. Hudsondf888462005-06-03 14:41:55 +00001936- SF patch #1180995: marshal now uses a binary format by default when
1937 serializing floats.
1938
Michael W. Hudsonda85a902005-06-01 11:34:22 +00001939- SF patch #1181301: on platforms that appear to use IEEE 754 floats,
1940 the routines that promise to produce IEEE 754 binary representations
1941 of floats now simply copy bytes around.
1942
Skip Montanarobbf12ba2005-05-20 03:07:06 +00001943- bug #967182: disallow opening files with 'wU' or 'aU' as specified by PEP

1945
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001946- patch #1109424: int, long, float, complex, and unicode now check for the
1947 proper magic slot for type conversions when subclassed. Previously the
1948 magic slot was ignored during conversion. Semantics now match the way
1949 subclasses of str always behaved. int/long/float, conversion of an instance
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00001950 to the base class has been moved to the proper nb_* magic slot and out of
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001951 PyNumber_*().
Neal Norwitzcfba5f82006-04-25 05:05:03 +00001952 Thanks Walter Drwald.

Barry Warsawc8d907c2005-04-19 23:43:40 +00001954- Descriptors defined in C with a PyGetSetDef structure, where the setter is
1955 NULL, now raise an AttributeError when attempting to set or delete the
1956 attribute. Previously a TypeError was raised, but this was inconsistent
1957 with the equivalent pure-Python implementation.
1958
Michael W. Hudson774479c2005-04-18 08:46:17 +00001959- It is now safe to call PyGILState_Release() before
1960 PyEval_InitThreads() (note that if there is reason to believe there
1961 are multiple threads around you still must call PyEval_InitThreads()
1962 before using the Python API; this fix is for extension modules that
1963 have no way of knowing if Python is multi-threaded yet).
1964
Michael W. Hudsone3afc592005-04-07 10:11:19 +00001965- Typing Ctrl-C whilst raw_input() was waiting in a build with threads

2260 package that was included in Python 2.3, except that PEP 8 module names are
2261 now used (e.g. mail.message instead of email.Message). The MIME classes
2262 have been moved to a subpackage (e.g. email.mime.text instead of
2263 email.MIMEText). The old names are still supported for now. Several
2264 deprecated Message methods have been removed and lots of bugs have been

2539
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002540- Enhancements to the csv module:
2541
2542 + Dialects are now validated by the underlying C code, better
Georg Brandl7eb4b7d2005-07-22 21:49:32 +00002543 reflecting its capabilities, and improving its compliance with
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002544 PEP 305.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002545 + Dialect parameter parsing has been re-implemented to improve error
2546 reporting.
2547 + quotechar=None and quoting=QUOTE_NONE now work the way PEP 305
2548 dictates.
2549 + the parser now removes the escapechar prefix from escaped characters.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002550 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the writer now tests for numeric
Andrew M. Kuchling6db67822006-04-18 14:04:57 +00002551 types, rather than any object that can be represented as a numeric.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002552 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the reader now casts unquoted fields
2553 to floats.
Andrew McNamaraf69d94f2005-01-13 11:30:54 +00002554 + reader now allows \r characters to be quoted (previously it only allowed
2555 \n to be quoted).
Andrew McNamarac89f2842005-01-12 07:44:42 +00002556 + writer doublequote handling improved.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002557 + Dialect classes passed to the module are no longer instantiated by
2558 the module before being parsed (the former validation scheme required
2559 this, but the mechanism was unreliable).
2560 + The dialect registry now contains instances of the internal
2561 C-coded dialect type, rather than references to python objects.
2562 + the internal c-coded dialect type is now immutable.
2563 + register_dialect now accepts the same keyword dialect specifications
2564 as the reader and writer, allowing the user to register dialects
2565 without first creating a dialect class.
2566 + a configurable limit to the size of parsed fields has been added -
2567 previously, an unmatched quote character could result in the entire
2568 file being read into the field buffer before an error was reported.
Andrew McNamara31d88962005-01-12 03:45:10 +00002569 + A new module method csv.field_size_limit() has been added that sets

Andrew McNamara7f2053e2005-01-12 11:17:16 +00002572 + A line_num attribute has been added to the reader object, which tracks
2573 the number of lines read from the source iterator. This is not
2574 the same as the number of records returned, as records can span
2575 multiple lines.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002576 + reader and writer objects were not being registered with the cyclic-GC.
2577 This has been fixed.
2578
Brett Cannone6539c42005-01-08 02:43:53 +00002579- _DummyThread objects in the threading module now delete self.__block that is
2580 inherited from _Thread since it uses up a lock allocated by 'thread'. The
2581 lock primitives tend to be limited in number and thus should not be wasted on
2582 a _DummyThread object. Fixes bug #1089632.

2702
Brett Cannon516592f2004-12-07 00:42:59 +00002703- setup.py now uses the directories specified in LDFLAGS using the -L option
2704 and in CPPFLAGS using the -I option for adding library and include
2705 directories, respectively, for compiling extension modules against. This has
2706 led to the core being compiled using the values in CPPFLAGS. It also removes
2707 the need for the special-casing of both DarwinPorts and Fink for darwin since
2708 the proper directories can be specified in LDFLAGS (``-L/sw/lib`` for Fink,
2709 ``-L/opt/local/lib`` for DarwinPorts) and CPPFLAGS (``-I/sw/include`` for
2710 Fink, ``-I/opt/local/include`` for DarwinPorts).

2718-----
2719
Tim Petersc9d78aa2006-03-26 23:27:58 +00002720- ``PyMem_{Del, DEL}`` and ``PyMem_{Free, FREE}`` no longer map to
2721 ``PyObject_{Free, FREE}``. They map to the system ``free()`` now. If memory
2722 is obtained via the ``PyObject_`` family, it must be released via the
2723 ``PyObject_`` family, and likewise for the ``PyMem_`` family. This has
2724 always been officially true, but when Python's small-object allocator was
2725 introduced, an attempt was made to cater to a few extension modules
2726 discovered at the time that obtained memory via ``PyObject_New`` but
2727 released it via ``PyMem_DEL``. It's years later, and if such code still
2728 exists it will fail now (probably with segfaults, but calling wrong
2729 low-level memory management functions can yield many symptoms).
2730
Raymond Hettingerbeb31012005-08-16 03:47:52 +00002731- Added a C API for set and frozenset objects.
