64-----------------
65
Martin v. Löwis9fa5a282008-09-11 06:53:30 +000066- Issue #3642: Suppress warning in obmalloc when size_t is larger than uint.
67
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +000068- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
69 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
70 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
71 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
72 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
73 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
74 64bit values.
75
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +000076- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on
77 error.
78
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd3ffb892008-09-09 07:24:30 +000079- Issue #3777: long() applied to a float object now always return a long
80 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
81 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
82 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
83
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +000084- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
85 a unicode argument.
86
Benjamin Peterson17f03ca2008-09-01 14:18:30 +000087- Issue #3683: Fix compilation when --without-threads is given.
88
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000089- Issue #3668: Fix a memory leak with the "s*" argument parser in
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000090 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000091 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
92
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000093- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +000094 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
95 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
96 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
97 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
98 type object.
99
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +0000100- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.
101
102- Fix memory leaks found with valgrind and update suppressions file.
103
104- Fix compiler warnings in opt mode which would lead to invalid memory reads.
105
106- Fix problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker.
107
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +0000108- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
109 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
110
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +0000111- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
112 ``__delslice__``.
113
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +0000114- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared
115 library targets in the Makefile.
116
Gregory P. Smith980b99b2008-09-07 05:15:18 +0000117- Issue #1204: The configure script now tests for additional libraries
118 that may be required when linking against readline. This fixes issues
119 with x86_64 builds on some platforms (a few Linux flavors and OpenBSD).

128
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc24cb3822008-09-11 20:56:13 +0000129- Issue #3640: Pickling a list or a dict uses less local variables, to reduce
130 stack usage in the case of deeply nested objects.
131

135
Nick Coghland2e09382008-09-11 12:11:06 +0000136- Issue #3781: Further warnings.catch_warnings() cleanup to prevent
137 silent misbehaviour when a single instance is nested in multiple
138 with statements, or when the methods are invoked in the wrong order.
139

169 warnings.catch_warnings() along with some API cleanup. Expanding the tests
170 for catch_warnings() also led to an improvement in the raising of a
171 DeprecationWarning related to warnings.warn_explicit().
172
Benjamin Peterson973e6c22008-09-01 23:12:58 +0000173- The deprecation warnings for the old camelCase threading API were removed.

Barry Warsaw07a4a382008-08-21 01:15:08 +0000237*Release date: 20-Aug-2008*
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000238
239Core and Builtins
240-----------------
241
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000242- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
243 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
244 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
245 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
246 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
247 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
248 default.
249
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000250- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
251 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
252
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000253- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
254 value again.
255
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000256- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
257 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
258 and introducing s*.
259
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000260- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
261 object was stored in the freelist.
262
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000263- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
264 ValueError consistently across platforms.
265
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000266- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
267 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
268 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
269
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000270- Apply security patches from Apple.
271
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000272- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
273 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
274
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000275- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
276 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
277
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000278- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
279 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
280 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
281
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000282- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
283 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
284 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
285 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
286 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
287 failed have been fixed.
288
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000289Library
290-------
291
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000292- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
293
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000294- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
295 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
296
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000297- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
298 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
299 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
300
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000301- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
302 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
303 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
304 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
305 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
306 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
307
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000308- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
309 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
310
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000311- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
312
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000313- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
314
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000315- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
316
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000317- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
318 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
319
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000320- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
321 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)

Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000433Core and Builtins
434-----------------
435
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000436- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
437 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
438 an integer using operator.index().
439
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000440- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
441 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
442
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000443- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
444 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
445
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000446- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
447 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
448 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
449
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000450- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
451 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
452 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
453 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
454 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
455 level.
456
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000457- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
458 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
459 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
460 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
461 all imports from that module to fail.
462
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000463- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
464 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
465 new-style classes.
466
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000467- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
468 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
469 another file in sys.stdout.
470
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000471- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
472 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
473 another thread's dictionary.
474
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000475- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
476 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
477 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
478 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
479 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
480 10, -1).
481
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000482- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
483 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
484 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000485
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000486- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
487 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into

495 error when they failed.
496
Martin v. Löwisaabf4042008-08-02 07:20:25 +0000497- Issue #799428: Fix Tkinter.Misc._nametowidget to unwrap Tcl command objects.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000522- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
523 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000524 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000525 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
526 merged into trunk.

543
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000544- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for

929
Brett Cannonb61d8012008-05-11 23:39:04 +0000930- ``Lib/lib-old`` is now added to sys.path.
931
Ronald Oussoren5640ce22008-06-05 12:58:24 +0000932- On MacOS X it is now possible to install the framework in 64-bit
933 mode or even as a 4-way universal binary (that is, PPC, i386,
Georg Brandl5cc774e2008-06-11 20:28:06 +0000934 PPC64 and x86_64 support in one binary).
Ronald Oussoren5640ce22008-06-05 12:58:24 +0000935
936 This is controlled by the configure argument ``--with-universal-archs``:
937
938 - ``--with-universal-archs=all``: install 4-way universal
939
940 - ``--with-universal-archs=32-bit``: install 2-way universal, 32-bit (the default)
941
942 - ``--with-universal-archs=64-bit``: install 2-way universal, 64-bit
943
944 This option should be used in combination with ``--enable-universalsdk=``.
945
946 NOTE: 64-bit and 4-way builds are only suppported on Mac OS X 10.5 (or later).

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000996- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
997 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
998 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where

1001 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
1002 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001066- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1067 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1068 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1069 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1070 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1071 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1072 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1073 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1074 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1075 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1076 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1077 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1078 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1079 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1080 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1081 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1082 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1083 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1084 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1085 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1086
1087 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1088 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1089 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1090 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1091 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1092 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1093 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1094 access to the underlying socket used.
1095
1096 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1097 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1098 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001099
1100 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001101 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,

1103 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
1104
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001105 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
1106 suite to run in parallel without issue.

1384
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001385- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1386 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1387 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1388 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1389 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1390 module is:
1391 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1392
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001393- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1394 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1395 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1396 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1397 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1398 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1399
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001400- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1401 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1402 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1403 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1404 PyObject_Format().
1405
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001406- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1407 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1408 state.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001417- Clear all free lists during a gc.collect() of the highest generation
1418 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1419 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001420
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001421- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
1422 subclass of collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set
1423 to a bound method.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcb01aa432008-02-08 00:56:02 +00001424
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +00001425- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free

Christian Heimes422051a2008-02-04 18:00:12 +00001433 to compact the internal free lists of pre-allocted ints and floats.
1434
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001435- Issue #1983: Fixed return type of fork(), fork1() and forkpty()
