319 so the controlled environment will more closely mirror the typical
320 script environment. This supports setup.py scripts that refer to
321 data files.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000326- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
327 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
328 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
329 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
330 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
331 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
332 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
333 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
334 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
335 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
336 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
337 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
338 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
339 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
340 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
341 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
342 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
343 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
344 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
345 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
346
347 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
348 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
349 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
350 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
351 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
352 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
353 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
354 access to the underlying socket used.
355
356 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
357 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
358 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000359
360 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000361 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000362 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
363 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
364
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000365 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
366 suite to run in parallel without issue.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc9a0d3462008-03-23 09:55:29 +0000421- Issue #1477: With narrow Unicode builds, the unicode escape sequence
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000422 \Uxxxxxxxx did not accept values outside the Basic Multilingual
423 Plane. This affected raw unicode literals and the

425 this case, like normal unicode literals and the 'unicode-escape'

Barry Warsaw52973612008-03-01 02:23:38 +0000637 644. The mode is now inherited from the py file.

Georg Brandlad61bc82008-02-23 15:11:18 +0000639- Issue #2067: file.__exit__() now calls subclasses' close() method.
640
641- Patch #1759: Backport of PEP 3129 class decorators.
Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +0000642
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000643- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +0000644 issue 215555 for a discussion.
645
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +0000646- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
647 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
648 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
649 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
650 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
651 module is:
652 from future_builtins import hex, oct
653
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +0000654- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
655 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
656 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
657 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
658 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
659 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
660
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +0000661- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
662 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
663 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
664 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
665 PyObject_Format().
666
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000667- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
668 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
669 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +0000670
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000671- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also

680 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +0000681
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000682- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
683 subclass of collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set
684 to a bound method.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcb01aa432008-02-08 00:56:02 +0000685
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +0000686- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
687 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
688
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000689- Limit free list of method and builtin function objects to 256

697 calls. Python expected the return type int but the fork familie
698 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +0000699
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000700- Issue #1678380: Fix a bug that identifies 0j and -0j when they

713 the same object as the func_code attribute of the function that
714 produced the generator.
Georg Brandl0cdf9a32008-01-26 14:14:20 +0000715

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000827- Issue #1686386: Tuple's tp_repr did not take into account the
828 possibility of having a self-referential tuple, which is possible
829 from C code. Nor did object's tp_str consider that a type's tp_str
830 could do something that could lead to an inifinite recursion.
831 Py_ReprEnter() and Py_EnterRecursiveCall(), respectively, fixed the

904 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +0000905 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature

2327 lists in Object/ are named ``free_list``, the counter ``numfree``
