84 __future__ import didn't work.
85

Georg Brandl7fb00ad2008-10-25 07:00:52 +000087 because it is a reserved word in 3.x.

Martin v. Löwis9fa5a282008-09-11 06:53:30 +0000361- Issue #3642: Suppress warning in obmalloc when size_t is larger than uint.
362
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +0000363- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
364 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
365 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
366 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
367 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
368 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
369 64bit values.
370
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +0000371- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on

375 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
376 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
377 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
378
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +0000379- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with

Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +0000389 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000533
534Core and Builtins
535-----------------
536
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000537- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
538 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
539 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
540 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
541 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
542 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
543 default.
544
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000545- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
546 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
547
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000548- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
549 value again.
550
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000551- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
552 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
553 and introducing s*.
554
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000555- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
556 object was stored in the freelist.
557
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000558- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
559 ValueError consistently across platforms.
560
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000561- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
562 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
563 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
564
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000565- Apply security patches from Apple.
566
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000567- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
568 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
569
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000570- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
571 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
572
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000573- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
574 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
575 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
576
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000577- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
578 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
579 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
580 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
581 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
582 failed have been fixed.

585-------
586
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000587- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
588
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000589- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
590 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
591
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000592- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
593 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
594 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
595
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000596- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
597 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
598 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
599 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
600 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
601 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
602
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000603- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
604 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
605
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000606- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
607
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000608- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
609
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000610- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
611
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000612- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
613 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
614
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000615- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
616 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
617
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000618- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
619 in a redirect.
620

Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000731- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
732 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
733 an integer using operator.index().
734
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000735- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
736 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
737
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000738- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
739 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
740
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000741- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
742 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
743 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
744
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000745- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
746 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
747 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
748 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
749 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
750 level.
751
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000752- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
753 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
754 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
755 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
756 all imports from that module to fail.
757
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000758- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
759 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
760 new-style classes.
761
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000762- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is

764 another file in sys.stdout.
765
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000766- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from

768 another thread's dictionary.
769
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000770- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
771 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
772 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
773 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
774 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
775 10, -1).
776
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000777- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
778 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
779 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000817- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
818 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000819 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000820 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never

1226
Ronald Oussoren5640ce22008-06-05 12:58:24 +00001227- On MacOS X it is now possible to install the framework in 64-bit
1228 mode or even as a 4-way universal binary (that is, PPC, i386,
Georg Brandl5cc774e2008-06-11 20:28:06 +00001229 PPC64 and x86_64 support in one binary).
Ronald Oussoren5640ce22008-06-05 12:58:24 +00001230
1231 This is controlled by the configure argument ``--with-universal-archs``:
1232
1233 - ``--with-universal-archs=all``: install 4-way universal
1234
1235 - ``--with-universal-archs=32-bit``: install 2-way universal, 32-bit (the default)
1236
1237 - ``--with-universal-archs=64-bit``: install 2-way universal, 64-bit
1238
1239 This option should be used in combination with ``--enable-universalsdk=``.
1240
1241 NOTE: 64-bit and 4-way builds are only suppported on Mac OS X 10.5 (or later).

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001291- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
1292 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
1293 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
1294 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
1295 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
1296 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
1297 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support

1359-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001360
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001361- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1362 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1363 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1364 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1365 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1366 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1367 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1368 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1369 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1370 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1371 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1372 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1373 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1374 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1375 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1376 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1377 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1378 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1379 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1380 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1381
1382 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1383 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1384 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1385 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1386 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1387 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1388 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1389 access to the underlying socket used.
1390
1391 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1392 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1393 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001394
1395 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001396 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,

1399
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001400 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test

1679
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001680- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1681 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1682 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1683 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged

1685 module is:
1686 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1687
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001688- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1689 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1690 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1691 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1692 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1693 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1694
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001695- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new

1713 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1714 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001715
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001716- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a

1935 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
1936 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the
