24Core and Builtins
25-----------------
26
Martin v. Löwis9fa5a282008-09-11 06:53:30 +000027- Issue #3642: Suppress warning in obmalloc when size_t is larger than uint.
28
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +000029- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
30 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
31 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
32 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
33 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
34 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
35 64bit values.
36
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +000037- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on
38 error.
39
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd3ffb892008-09-09 07:24:30 +000040- Issue #3777: long() applied to a float object now always return a long
41 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
42 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
43 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
44
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +000045- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
46 a unicode argument.
47
Benjamin Peterson17f03ca2008-09-01 14:18:30 +000048- Issue #3683: Fix compilation when --without-threads is given.
49
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000050- Issue #3668: Fix a memory leak with the "s*" argument parser in
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000051 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000052 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
53
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000054- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +000055 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
56 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
57 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
58 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
59 type object.
60
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +000061- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.
62
63- Fix memory leaks found with valgrind and update suppressions file.
64
65- Fix compiler warnings in opt mode which would lead to invalid memory reads.
66
67- Fix problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker.
68
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +000069- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
70 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
71
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +000072- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
73 ``__delslice__``.
74
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +000075- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared
76 library targets in the Makefile.
77
Gregory P. Smith980b99b2008-09-07 05:15:18 +000078- Issue #1204: The configure script now tests for additional libraries
79 that may be required when linking against readline. This fixes issues
80 with x86_64 builds on some platforms (a few Linux flavors and OpenBSD).
81
Benjamin Peterson14cb6bc2008-08-26 17:08:40 +000082C-API

91 stack usage in the case of deeply nested objects.
92
Guido van Rossume3c4fd92008-09-10 14:27:00 +000093- Issue #3629: Fix sre "bytecode" validator for an end case.

96
Nick Coghland2e09382008-09-11 12:11:06 +000097- Issue #3781: Further warnings.catch_warnings() cleanup to prevent
98 silent misbehaviour when a single instance is nested in multiple
99 with statements, or when the methods are invoked in the wrong order.
100
Vinay Sajip844f7412008-09-09 13:42:08 +0000101- Issue #3809: Fixed spurious 'test.blah' file left behind by test_logging.

130 warnings.catch_warnings() along with some API cleanup. Expanding the tests
131 for catch_warnings() also led to an improvement in the raising of a
132 DeprecationWarning related to warnings.warn_explicit().
133
Benjamin Peterson973e6c22008-09-01 23:12:58 +0000134- The deprecation warnings for the old camelCase threading API were removed.

Barry Warsaw07a4a382008-08-21 01:15:08 +0000198*Release date: 20-Aug-2008*
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000199
200Core and Builtins
201-----------------
202
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000203- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
204 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
205 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
206 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
207 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
208 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
209 default.
210
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000211- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
212 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
213
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000214- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
215 value again.
216
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000217- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
218 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
219 and introducing s*.
220
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000221- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
222 object was stored in the freelist.
223
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000224- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
225 ValueError consistently across platforms.
226
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000227- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
228 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
229 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
230
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000231- Apply security patches from Apple.
232
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000233- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
234 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
235
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000236- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
237 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
238
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000239- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
240 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
241 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
242
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000243- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
244 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
245 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
246 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
247 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
248 failed have been fixed.
249
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000250Library
251-------
252
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000253- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
254
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000255- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
256 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
257
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000258- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
259 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
260 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
261
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000262- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
263 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
264 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
265 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
266 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
267 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
268
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000269- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
270 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
271
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000272- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
273
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000274- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
275
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000276- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
277
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000278- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
279 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
280
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000281- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
282 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
283
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000284- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
285 in a redirect.
286
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000287- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +0000288 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000289
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +0000290- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
291 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
292
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000293- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
294 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
295 regular expression.
296
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000297- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
298 thread-safe.
299
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +0000300- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
301 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
302 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
303
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +0000304- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.

307 menu entries were not deleted.
308
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +0000309- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
310 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
311
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000312- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise

396
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000397- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
398 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
399 an integer using operator.index().
400
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000401- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
402 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
403
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000404- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
405 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
406
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000407- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
408 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
409 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
410
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000411- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
412 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
413 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
414 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
415 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
416 level.
417
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000418- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
419 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
420 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
421 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
422 all imports from that module to fail.
423
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000424- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
425 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
426 new-style classes.
427
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000428- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is

430 another file in sys.stdout.
431
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000432- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from

434 another thread's dictionary.
435
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000436- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
437 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
438 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
439 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
440 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
441 10, -1).
442
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000443- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
444 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
445 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000446
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000447- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000483- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
484 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000485 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000486 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000957- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
958 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
959 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
960 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
961 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
962 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
963 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support

1025-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001026
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001027- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1028 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1029 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1030 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1031 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1032 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1033 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1034 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1035 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1036 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1037 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1038 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1039 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1040 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1041 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1042 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1043 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1044 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1045 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1046 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1047
1048 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1049 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1050 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1051 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1052 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1053 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1054 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1055 access to the underlying socket used.
1056
1057 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1058 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1059 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001060
1061 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001062 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001063 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
1064 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
1065
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001066 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
1067 suite to run in parallel without issue.

1345
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001346- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1347 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be

1355 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1356 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1357 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1358 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1359 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).

1379 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1380 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001381
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001382- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
