383 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
384 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
385 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000552
553Core and Builtins
554-----------------
555
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000556- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
557 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
558 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
559 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
560 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
561 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
562 default.
563
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000564- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
565 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
566
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000567- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
568 value again.
569
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000570- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
571 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
572 and introducing s*.
573
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000574- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
575 object was stored in the freelist.
576
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000577- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
578 ValueError consistently across platforms.
579
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000580- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
581 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
582 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
583
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000584- Apply security patches from Apple.
585
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000586- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
587 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
588
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000589- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
590 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
591
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000592- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
593 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
594 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
595
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000596- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
597 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
598 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
599 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
600 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
601 failed have been fixed.

605
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000606- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
607
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000608- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
609 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
610
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000611- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
612 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
613 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
614
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000615- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
616 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
617 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
618 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
619 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,

748-----------------
749
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000750- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
751 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
752 an integer using operator.index().
753
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000754- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
755 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
756
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000757- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
758 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
759
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000760- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
761 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
762 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
763
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000764- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
765 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
766 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
767 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
768 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
769 level.
770
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000771- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
772 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
773 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
774 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
775 all imports from that module to fail.
776
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000777- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
778 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
779 new-style classes.
780
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000781- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is

783 another file in sys.stdout.
784
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000785- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from

787 another thread's dictionary.
788
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000789- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
790 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
791 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
792 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
793 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
794 10, -1).
795
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000796- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
797 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
798 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000799
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000800- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000836- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
837 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000838 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000839 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
840 merged into trunk.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001310- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
1311 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
1312 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
1313 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``

Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001379
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001380- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1381 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1382 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1383 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1384 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1385 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1386 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1387 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1388 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1389 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1390 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1391 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1392 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1393 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1394 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1395 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1396 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1397 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1398 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1399 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1400
1401 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1402 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1403 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1404 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1405 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1406 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1407 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1408 access to the underlying socket used.
1409
1410 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1411 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1412 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001413
1414 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc9a0d3462008-03-23 09:55:29 +00001474- Issue #1477: With narrow Unicode builds, the unicode escape sequence
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001475 \Uxxxxxxxx did not accept values outside the Basic Multilingual

Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001699- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1700 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1701 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1702 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged

1706
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001707- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1708 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1709 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1710 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1711 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1712 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1713
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001714- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1715 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
