10*Release date: XX-Aug-2008*
11
12Core and Builtins
13-----------------
14
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +000015- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
16 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
17 and introducing s*.
18
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +000019- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
20 object was stored in the freelist.
21
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +000022- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
23 ValueError consistently across platforms.
24
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +000025- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
26 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
27 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
28
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +000029- Apply security patches from Apple.
30
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +000031- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
32 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
33
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +000034- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
35 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
36
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +000037- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
38 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
39 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
40
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +000041- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
42 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
43 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
44 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
45 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
46 failed have been fixed.
47
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +000048Library
49-------
50
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +000051- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
52 BaseHTTPServer.
53
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +000054- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
55 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
56
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +000057- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
58 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
59 regular expression.
60
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +000061- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
62 thread-safe.
63
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +000064- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
65 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
66 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
67
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +000068- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
69
Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +000070- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
71 menu entries were not deleted.
72
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +000073- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
74 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
75
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +000076- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
77 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
78
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +000079- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
80 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
81 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
82
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +000083- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
84 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
85 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
86
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +000087- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
88 the reload() built-in has been removed.
89
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +000090- Changed code in the following modules/packages to remove warnings raised
Brett Cannonc1b76e42008-08-09 23:06:16 +000091 while running under the ``-3`` flag: aifc, asynchat, asyncore, bdb, bsddb,
Brett Cannon9fc56312008-08-09 23:39:11 +000092 ConfigParser, cookielib, csv, difflib, DocXMLRPCServer, email, filecmp,
93 fileinput, inspect, logging, modulefinder, pdb, pickle, profile, pstats,
94 pydoc, re, rlcompleter, SimpleXMLRPCServer, shelve, socket, subprocess,
95 sqlite3, tarfile, Tkinter, test.test_support, textwrap, threading, tokenize,
Brett Cannon46265862008-08-09 23:34:11 +000096 traceback, urlparse, wsgiref, xml, xmlrpclib.
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +000097
Lars Gustäbel727bd0b2008-08-02 11:26:39 +000098- Issue #3039: Fix tarfile.TarFileCompat.writestr() which always
99 raised an AttributeError.
100
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000101- Issue #2523: Fix quadratic behaviour when read()ing a binary file without
Antoine Pitroude781a42008-08-09 12:43:23 +0000102 asking for a specific length. This problem only affected files opened
103 using the new "io" module, not the built-in open() function.
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000104
Mark Dickinsonfe84cce2008-07-27 06:39:07 +0000105- Issue #3449: Update decimal module to use most recent specification
106 (v. 1.68) and tests (v. 2.58) from IBM.
107
Skip Montanarof9ac43f2008-07-27 00:50:41 +0000108- Issue 3437: Bug fix in robotparser parsing of Allow: lines.
109
Raymond Hettinger8c664e82008-07-25 18:43:33 +0000110- Issue 1592: Improve error reporting when operations are attempted
111 on a closed shelf.
112
Georg Brandlf9efabb2008-07-23 15:16:45 +0000113- Deprecate the "ast" parser function aliases.
114
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000115- Issue #3120: On 64-bit Windows the subprocess module was truncating handles.
116
117- Issue #3303: Fix a crash in locale.strcoll() when calling it with
118 invalid arguments.
119
120- Issue #3302: Fix several crashes when calling locale's gettext functions
121 with None arguments.
122
123- Issue #3389: Allow resolving dotted names for handlers in logging
124 configuration files.
125
126- Deprecate the sunaudio module for removal in Python 3.0.
127
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +0000128- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a
129 file name rather than a ZipInfo instance, so files are extracted with
130 mode 0600 rather than 000 under Unix.
131
Gregory P. Smitha36f8fe2008-08-04 00:13:29 +0000132- Issue #1857: subprocess.Popen.poll gained an additional _deadstate keyword
133 argument in python 2.5, this broke code that subclassed Popen to include its
134 own poll method. Fixed my moving _deadstate to an _internal_poll method.
135
Martin v. Löwis8dbf3642008-08-01 14:10:26 +0000136Build
137-----

139- Generate the PatternGrammar pickle during "make install".
140
Nick Coghlan2a0c2b12008-08-04 12:47:17 +0000141Documentation
142-------------
143
144- Issue #643841: The language reference now provides more detailed
145 coverage of the lookup process for special methods. The disclaimers
146 regarding lack of coverage of new-style classes have also been
147 removed, since the coverage is now fairly reasonable.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000153*Release date: 17-Jul-2008*
154
Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000155Core and Builtins
156-----------------
157
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000158- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
159 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
160 an integer using operator.index().
161
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000162- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
163 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
164
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000165- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
166 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
167
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000168- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
169 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
170 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
171
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000172- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
173 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
174 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
175 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
176 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
177 level.
178
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000179- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
180 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
181 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
182 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
183 all imports from that module to fail.
184
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000185- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
186 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
187 new-style classes.
188
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000189- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
190 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
191 another file in sys.stdout.
192
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000193- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
194 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
195 another thread's dictionary.
196
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000197- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
198 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
199 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
200 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
201 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
202 10, -1).
203
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000204- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
205 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
206 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000207
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000208- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
209 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
210 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +0000211
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000212Library
213-------
214
Thomas Heller57adf222008-08-14 19:10:48 +0000215- Issue #3554: ctypes.string_at and ctypes.wstring_at did call Python
216 api functions without holding the GIL, which could lead to a fatal
217 error when they failed.
218
Martin v. Löwisaabf4042008-08-02 07:20:25 +0000219- Issue #799428: Fix Tkinter.Misc._nametowidget to unwrap Tcl command objects.
220
Jesse Noller7fb96402008-07-17 21:01:05 +0000221- Issue #3395: fix reference in test_multiprocessing to old debugInfo method
222
Georg Brandla24869a2008-07-16 22:33:18 +0000223- Issue #3312: Fix two crashes in sqlite3.
224

226
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000227- Issue #3125: Remove copy_reg in multiprocessing and replace it with
228 ForkingPickler.register() to resolve conflict with ctypes.
229
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000230- Issue #3090: Fixed ARCHFLAGS parsing on OS/X
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000231
Thomas Heller880f5292008-07-15 19:39:38 +0000232- Issue #3313: Fixed a crash when a failed dlopen() call does not set
233 a valid dlerror() message.
234
Thomas Heller2bad6572008-07-15 17:19:50 +0000235- Issue #3258: Fixed a crash when a ctypes POINTER type to an
236 incomplete structure was created.
237
Brett Cannon3d0b9f02008-07-13 01:15:07 +0000238- Issue #3339: dummy_thread.acquire() should not return None.
239
Raymond Hettingerb01713e2008-07-10 14:34:57 +0000240- Issue #3285: Fractions from_float() and from_decimal() accept Integral arguments.
241
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000242- Issue #3301: Bisect module behaved badly when lo was negative.
Raymond Hettinger3cd1e422008-07-10 14:03:19 +0000243
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000244- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
245 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000246 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000247 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
248 merged into trunk.
249
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +0000250- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().
251

253
254- Issue #1526: Allow more than 64k files to be added to Zip64 file.
255
256- Issue #1746: Correct handling of zipfile archive comments (previously
257 archives with comments over 4k were flagged as invalid). Allow writing
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000258 Zip files with archives by setting the 'comment' attribute of a ZipFile.
Martin v. Löwis8c436412008-07-03 12:51:14 +0000259
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000260- Issue #449227: The rlcompleter module now adds "(" to callable objects
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000261 when completed.
Facundo Batista66c52772008-07-02 16:52:55 +0000262
Nick Coghlanc060b0e2008-07-02 13:09:19 +0000263- Issue #3190: Pydoc now hides the automatic module attribute __package__ (the
264 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
265
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000266- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for
267 removal in Python 3.0 in favor of urllib2.urlopen().

Gregory P. Smith3b1e6b22008-07-07 04:31:58 +0000273 properly when raising an exception due to the bz2file being closed.
274 Prevents a deadlock.
275
Gregory P. Smithc4691ec2008-07-07 05:09:12 +0000276- Issue #3094: httplib.HTTPSConnection Host: headers no longer include the
277 redundant ":443" port number designation when the connection is using the
278 default https port (443).
279
Gregory P. Smithdb3409c2008-07-17 03:13:05 +0000280- Issue #874900: after an os.fork() call the threading module state is cleaned
281 up in the child process to prevent deadlock and report proper thread counts
282 if the new process uses the threading module.
283
Nick Coghlan38469e22008-07-13 12:23:47 +0000284Tests
285-----
286
287- test.test_support.catch_warning now keeps track of all warnings it sees
288 and is now better documented. Explicit unit tests for this context manager

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000715- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
716 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
717 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
718 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``

720 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
721 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support

Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000784
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000785- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
786 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
787 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
788 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
789 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
790 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
791 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
792 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
793 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
794 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
795 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
796 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
797 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
798 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
799 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
800 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
801 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
802 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
803 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
804 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
805
806 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
807 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
808 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
809 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
810 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
811 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
812 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
813 access to the underlying socket used.
814
815 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
816 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
817 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000818
819 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000820 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,

822 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
823
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000824 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
825 suite to run in parallel without issue.

Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001101- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +00001102 issue 215555 for a discussion.
1103
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001104- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1105 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1106 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1107 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1108 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1109 module is:
1110 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1111
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001112- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1113 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1114 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1115 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1116 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1117 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1118
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001119- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1120 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1121 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1122 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1123 PyObject_Format().
1124
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001125- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1126 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1127 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +00001128
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001129- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001130 prevent a possible crash: an Abstract Base Class would try to access
1131 a slot on a registered virtual subclass.

1134 real or imaginary part.
Christian Heimes2f0da532008-02-15 06:57:08 +00001135
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001136- Clear all free lists during a gc.collect() of the highest generation
1137 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1138 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001139
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001140- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
1141 subclass of collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set
