18
Georg Brandlaa2321b2007-03-07 00:40:28 +000019- Patch #703779: unset __file__ in __main__ after running a file. This

21 a PYTHONSTARTUP file is used.
22
Georg Brandl49aafc92007-03-07 00:34:46 +000023- Variant of patch #697613: don't exit the interpreter on a SystemExit
24 exception if the -i command line option or PYTHONINSPECT environment
25 variable is given, but break into the interactive interpreter just like
26 on other exceptions or normal program exit.
27
Georg Brandl00cd8182007-03-06 18:41:12 +000028- Patch #1638879: don't accept strings with embedded NUL bytes in long().

39
Brett Cannon129bd522007-01-30 21:34:36 +000040- PEP 352: Raising a string exception now triggers a TypeError. Attempting to
41 catch a string exception raises DeprecationWarning.
42
Brett Cannonf5bee302007-01-23 23:21:22 +000043- Bug #1377858: Fix the segfaulting of the interpreter when an object created
44 a weakref on itself during a __del__ call for new-style classes (classic
45 classes still have the bug).

116
Brett Cannon9adeab72006-09-20 18:34:28 +0000117- Bug #1551432: Exceptions do not define an explicit __unicode__ method. This

Jeremy Hyltoncca75402007-02-27 18:33:31 +0000149- Add new requirements for metaclasses. 1) If type or a subclass of type
150 occurs in __bases__, it must occur before any non-type bases, e.g.
151 before regular classes. 2) If you assign to __bases__, you may not
152 change the metaclass. Many more illegal assignments to __bases__
153 are now checked and raise TypeErrors. This changed fixed at least

181 TestSuite.addTest(). This should cause no incompatibility since it
182 never made sense with ordinary subclasses -- the failure just occurred

660Core and builtins
661-----------------
662
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000663- Unicode objects will no longer raise an exception when being
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000664 compared equal or unequal to a string and a UnicodeDecodeError
665 exception occurs, e.g. as result of a decoding failure.
Neal Norwitz56423e52006-08-13 18:11:08 +0000666
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000667 Instead, the equal (==) and unequal (!=) comparison operators will
668 now issue a UnicodeWarning and interpret the two objects as
669 unequal. The UnicodeWarning can be filtered as desired using
670 the warning framework, e.g. silenced completely, turned into an
671 exception, logged, etc.
672
673 Note that compare operators other than equal and unequal will still
674 raise UnicodeDecodeError exceptions as they've always done.
Neal Norwitz8a87f5d2006-08-12 17:03:09 +0000675
Marc-André Lemburg757ea272006-08-14 11:44:34 +0000676- Fix segfault when doing string formatting on subclasses of long.
677
678- Fix bug related to __len__ functions using values > 2**32 on 64-bit machines
679 with new-style classes.
680
681- Fix bug related to __len__ functions returning negative values with
682 classic classes.
683
684- Patch #1538606, Fix __index__() clipping. There were some problems
685 discovered with the API and how integers that didn't fit into Py_ssize_t
686 were handled. This patch attempts to provide enough alternatives
687 to effectively use __index__.
688
Martin v. Löwisab2f8f72006-08-09 07:57:39 +0000689- Bug #1536021: __hash__ may now return long int; the final hash
690 value is obtained by invoking hash on the long int.
691
Thomas Hellerab1049c2006-08-08 17:37:00 +0000692- Bug #1536786: buffer comparison could emit a RuntimeWarning.

695 sys.stdin is closed.
696
Thomas Heller74d36f02006-08-04 18:17:40 +0000697- On Windows, the PyErr_Warn function is now exported from
698 the Python dll again.
699
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000700- Bug #1191458: tracing over for loops now produces a line event
701 on each iteration. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc
702 magic number. This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5c1
703 will be regenerated.
704
Neal Norwitz0cbd8052006-08-04 05:09:28 +0000705- Bug #1333982: string/number constants were inappropriately stored
706 in the byte code and co_consts even if they were not used, ie
707 immediately popped off the stack.

714
Neil Schemenauer4c6b0d52006-08-16 23:38:05 +0000715- Fix a bug in the ``compiler`` package that caused invalid code to be
716 generated for generator expressions.
717
Marc-André Lemburg574cfea2006-08-16 16:11:01 +0000718- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0. The change to
719 keep it programmatically in sync with the Python version running
720 the code (introduced in 2.5b3) has been reverted. It will continue
721 to be maintained manually as static string literal.
722
Andrew M. Kuchlingc13324e2006-08-16 17:11:18 +0000723- If the Python part of a ctypes callback function returns None,
Thomas Hellerb4a0cf12006-08-16 15:10:12 +0000724 and this cannot be converted to the required C type, an exception is
725 printed with PyErr_WriteUnraisable. Before this change, the C
Andrew M. Kuchlingc13324e2006-08-16 17:11:18 +0000726 callback returned arbitrary values to the calling code.
Thomas Hellerb4a0cf12006-08-16 15:10:12 +0000727
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000728- The __repr__ method of a NULL ctypes.py_object() no longer raises

730
Tim Petersc10c9d02006-09-05 02:18:09 +0000731- uuid.UUID now has a bytes_le attribute. This returns the UUID in
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000732 little-endian byte order for Windows. In addition, uuid.py gained some
Anthony Baxter58179592006-08-16 13:08:25 +0000733 workarounds for clocks with low resolution, to stop the code yielding
734 duplicate UUIDs.
735
Kurt B. Kaiserd112bc72006-08-16 05:01:42 +0000736- Patch #1540892: site.py Quitter() class attempts to close sys.stdin
737 before raising SystemExit, allowing IDLE to honor quit() and exit().
738
Neal Norwitzbf8c1952006-08-15 04:14:57 +0000739- Bug #1224621: make tabnanny recognize IndentationErrors raised by tokenize.

766
Thomas Heller86720042006-08-14 11:17:48 +0000767- Patch #1532975 was applied, which fixes Bug #1533481: ctypes now

769 function calls. The ctypes version number was changed to 1.0.1.
770
Bob Ippolitoe6c9f982006-08-04 23:59:21 +0000771- Bug #1530559, struct.pack raises TypeError where it used to convert.

837
Phillip J. Ebyf7575d02006-07-28 21:12:07 +0000838- Bug #1529871: The speed enhancement patch #921466 broke Python's compliance
839 with PEP 302. This was fixed by adding an ``imp.NullImporter`` type that is
840 used in ``sys.path_importer_cache`` to cache non-directory paths and avoid
841 excessive filesystem operations during imports.
842
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +0000843- Bug #1521947: When checking for overflow, ``PyOS_strtol()`` used some
844 operations on signed longs that are formally undefined by C.
845 Unfortunately, at least one compiler now cares about that, so complicated

Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000864 again. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc magic number.

Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000891 to make it appear at both names, has been removed. Bug #1511497,
Fred Drakefbdeaad2006-07-29 16:56:15 +0000892 #1513611, and probably others.
893
Georg Brandledd9b0d2006-07-29 09:33:26 +0000894- Bug #1441397: The compiler module now recognizes module and function
895 docstrings correctly as it did in Python 2.4.
896
Tim Peters6f681472006-07-27 23:44:37 +0000897- Bug #1529297: The rewrite of doctest for Python 2.4 unintentionally
898 lost that tests are sorted by name before being run. This rarely
899 matters for well-written tests, but can create baffling symptoms if
900 side effects from one test to the next affect outcomes. ``DocTestFinder``
901 has been changed to sort the list of tests it returns.
902
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000903- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0, and is now kept
Martin v. Löwis1f30c372006-07-30 13:14:05 +0000904 in sync with sys.version_info[:3].

Martin v. Löwis9298eff2006-07-26 12:12:56 +0000906- Bug #978833: Really close underlying socket in _socketobject.close.
907
Georg Brandl8c036cc2006-08-20 13:15:39 +0000908- Bug #1459963: urllib and urllib2 now normalize HTTP header names with
909 title().

Georg Brandlcf0c1722006-07-26 07:23:32 +0000911- Patch #1525766: In pkgutil.walk_packages, correctly pass the onerror callback
912 to recursive calls and call it with the failing package name.
913
Martin v. Löwis0b483032006-07-25 09:53:12 +0000914- Bug #1525817: Don't truncate short lines in IDLE's tool tips.
915
Georg Brandlc13c34c2006-07-24 14:09:56 +0000916- Patch #1515343: Fix printing of deprecated string exceptions with a
917 value in the traceback module.
918
Greg Ward48fae7a2006-07-23 16:05:51 +0000919- Resync optparse with Optik 1.5.3: minor tweaks for/to tests.
920
Martin v. Löwis426f4a12006-07-18 17:46:31 +0000921- Patch #1524429: Use repr() instead of backticks in Tkinter again.
922
Brett Cannoncaebe222006-07-18 04:41:36 +0000923- Bug #1520914: Change time.strftime() to accept a zero for any position in its
924 argument tuple. For arguments where zero is illegal, the value is forced to
925 the minimum value that is correct. This is to support an undocumented but
926 common way people used to fill in inconsequential information in the time
927 tuple pre-2.4.
928
Bob Ippolito5ea4bf12006-07-15 16:53:15 +0000929- Patch #1220874: Update the binhex module for Mach-O.
930
Barry Warsawb110bad2006-07-21 14:51:07 +0000931- The email package has improved RFC 2231 support, specifically for
932 recognizing the difference between encoded (name*0*=<blah>) and non-encoded
933 (name*0=<blah>) parameter continuations. This may change the types of
934 values returned from email.message.Message.get_param() and friends.
935 Specifically in some cases where non-encoded continuations were used,
936 get_param() used to return a 3-tuple of (None, None, string) whereas now it
937 will just return the string (since non-encoded continuations don't have
938 charset and language parts).
939
940 Also, whereas % values were decoded in all parameter continuations, they are
941 now only decoded in encoded parameter parts.
942
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +0000943- Bug #1517990: IDLE keybindings on MacOS X now work correctly
944
945- Bug #1517996: IDLE now longer shows the default Tk menu when a
946 path browser, class browser or debugger is the frontmost window on MacOS X
947
Barry Warsaw00decd72006-07-27 23:43:15 +0000948- Patch #1520294: Support for getset and member descriptors in types.py,
949 inspect.py, and pydoc.py. Specifically, this allows for querying the type
950 of an object against these built-in types and more importantly, for getting
951 their docstrings printed in the interactive interpreter's help() function.

958 a socket operation on a socket with a timeout, the exception will be
959 caught correctly. Previously, the exception was not caught.
960
Thomas Heller1393d6a2006-07-28 21:43:20 +0000961- Patch #1529514: The _ctypes extension is now compiled on more
962 openbsd target platforms.
963
Tim Peters9cab5932006-07-28 00:30:00 +0000964- The ``__reduce__()`` method of the new ``collections.defaultdict`` had
965 a memory leak, affecting pickles and deep copies.
966
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +0000967- Bug #1471938: Fix curses module build problem on Solaris 8; patch by

971
Thomas Hellerce049a02006-07-14 17:51:14 +0000972- Patch #1521817: Index range checking on ctypes arrays containing
973 exactly one element enabled again. This allows iterating over these
974 arrays, without the need to check the array size before.
975
Thomas Heller6e1ad2e2006-07-13 17:05:13 +0000976- Bug #1521375: When the code in ctypes.util.find_library was
Andrew M. Kuchlingb7eca832006-07-13 17:37:26 +0000977 run with root privileges, it could overwrite or delete
Thomas Heller2bdf29e2006-07-13 17:01:14 +0000978 /dev/null in certain cases; this is now fixed.
979
Thomas Heller47d7a062006-07-12 08:43:47 +0000980- Bug #1467450: On Mac OS X 10.3, RTLD_GLOBAL is now used as the
981 default mode for loading shared libraries in ctypes.
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000982
Thomas Hellerb4dc2ef2006-07-13 09:53:47 +0000983- Because of a misspelled preprocessor symbol, ctypes was always
984 compiled without thread support; this is now fixed.
985
Gregory P. Smith641cddf2006-07-28 01:35:25 +0000986- pybsddb Bug #1527939: bsddb module DBEnv dbremove and dbrename
987 methods now allow their database parameter to be None as the
988 sleepycat API allows.
989
Matt Flemingec926502006-07-28 11:27:27 +0000990- Bug #1526460: Fix socketmodule compile on NetBSD as it has a different

994-----
995
996- Bug #1501330: Change test_ossaudiodev to be much more tolerant in terms of
997 how long the test file should take to play. Now accepts taking 2.93 secs
998 (exact time) +/- 10% instead of the hard-coded 3.1 sec.
999
Georg Brandl4793aa32006-07-28 18:31:39 +00001000- Patch #1529686: The standard tests ``test_defaultdict``, ``test_iterlen``,
1001 ``test_uuid`` and ``test_email_codecs`` didn't actually run any tests when
1002 run via ``regrtest.py``. Now they do.

1012- PythonLauncher now works correctly when the path to the script contains
1013 characters that are treated specially by the shell (such as quotes).
1014
1015- Bug #1527397: PythonLauncher now launches scripts with the working directory
1016 set to the directory that contains the script instead of the user home
Tim Peters4643c2f2006-08-10 22:45:34 +00001017 directory. That latter was an implementation accident and not what users

1030 again evaluates to a int object, not a long.
1031
Neil Schemenauer0e07b602006-07-09 16:16:34 +00001032- Bug #1501934: The scope of global variables that are locally assigned
1033 using augmented assignment is now correctly determined.
1034
Martin v. Löwisd5cfa542006-07-03 13:47:40 +00001035- Bug #927248: Recursive method-wrapper objects can now safely
1036 be released.
1037
Martin v. Löwisfcfff0a2006-07-03 12:19:50 +00001038- Bug #1417699: Reject locale-specific decimal point in float()
1039 and atof().
1040
Hye-Shik Change6a1cb92006-06-23 21:16:18 +00001041- Bug #1511381: codec_getstreamcodec() in codec.c is corrected to
1042 omit a default "error" argument for NULL pointer. This allows
1043 the parser to take a codec from cjkcodecs again.
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +00001044
Neal Norwitzfb48afa2006-07-08 05:31:37 +00001045- Bug #1519018: 'as' is now validated properly in import statements.
1046
Neal Norwitz28746ab2006-07-09 22:14:42 +00001047- On 64 bit systems, int literals that use less than 64 bits are
1048 now ints rather than longs.
1049
Neal Norwitzed657552006-07-10 00:04:44 +00001050- Bug #1512814, Fix incorrect lineno's when code at module scope
1051 started after line 256.
1052
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +00001053- New function ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dict mapping thread
1054 id to topmost thread stack frame. This is for expert use, and is
1055 especially useful for debugging application deadlocks. The functionality
1056 was previously available in Fazal Majid's ``threadframe`` extension
1057 module, but it wasn't possible to do this in a wholly threadsafe way from
1058 an extension.

1067
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +00001068- Bug #1508010: msvccompiler now requires the DISTUTILS_USE_SDK
Martin v. Löwis8d656812006-07-10 07:23:48 +00001069 environment variable to be set in order to the SDK environment
1070 for finding the compiler, include files, etc.

1075
Thomas Woutersadd19112006-07-05 11:03:49 +00001076- string.Template() now correctly handles tuple-values. Previously,
1077 multi-value tuples would raise an exception and single-value tuples would
1078 be treated as the value they contain, instead.
1079
Martin v. Löwisede77f52006-07-03 13:01:35 +00001080- Bug #822974: Honor timeout in telnetlib.{expect,read_until}

1087 degrees and radians.
1088
Martin v. Löwis4c4300d2006-07-03 10:05:30 +00001089- Reimplement turtle.circle using a polyline, to allow correct

1096 socket again, which then gets closed as it becomes unreferenced.
1097
Fred Drake10497c82006-06-29 02:57:48 +00001098- Bug #1504333: Make sgmllib support angle brackets in quoted
1099 attribute values.

1102 sgmllib ('[' and ']' were not accepted).
1103
Georg Brandl1be63af2006-06-28 20:23:25 +00001104- Fix a bug in the turtle module's end_fill function.
1105
Brett Cannon53ab5b72006-06-22 16:49:14 +00001106- Bug #1510580: The 'warnings' module improperly required that a Warning
1107 category be either a types.ClassType and a subclass of Warning. The proper
1108 check is just that it is a subclass with Warning as the documentation states.
1109
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +00001110- The compiler module now correctly compiles the new try-except-finally

1116 shutdown when fileConfig() was called multiple times.
1117
Gerhard Häring762fbd32006-07-02 17:48:30 +00001118- The sqlite3 module did cut off data from the SQLite database at the first
1119 null character before sending it to a custom converter. This has been fixed
1120 now.
1121
Neal Norwitz0f8b31a2006-06-28 06:28:31 +00001122Extension Modules
1123-----------------
1124
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +00001125- #1494314: Fix a regression with high-numbered sockets in 2.4.3. This
1126 means that select() on sockets > FD_SETSIZE (typically 1024) work again.
1127 The patch makes sockets use poll() internally where available.
Anthony Baxter93ab5fa2006-07-11 02:04:09 +00001128
Thomas Hellerb9cb84f2006-07-10 11:17:37 +00001129- Assigning None to pointer type fields in ctypes structures possible
1130 overwrote the wrong fields, this is fixed now.
1131
1132- Fixed a segfault in _ctypes when ctypes.wintypes were imported
1133 on non-Windows platforms.
1134
1135- Bug #1518190: The ctypes.c_void_p constructor now accepts any
1136 integer or long, without range checking.
1137
1138- Patch #1517790: It is now possible to use custom objects in the ctypes
1139 foreign function argtypes sequence as long as they provide a from_param
1140 method, no longer is it required that the object is a ctypes type.
1141
1142- The '_ctypes' extension module now works when Python is configured
1143 with the --without-threads option.
1144
Martin v. Löwisee1e06d2006-07-02 18:44:00 +00001145- Bug #1513646: os.access on Windows now correctly determines write

1160
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +00001161- 'configure' now detects the zlib library the same way as distutils.
Thomas Woutersfc34f6c2006-07-06 10:48:28 +00001162 Previously, the slight difference could cause compilation errors of the
1163 'zlib' module on systems with more than one version of zlib.
1164
Martin v. Löwis4cbd05c2006-07-06 07:05:21 +00001165- The MSI compileall step was fixed to also support a TARGETDIR

1196Core and builtins
1197-----------------
1198
Georg Brandla56b9152006-06-19 06:35:54 +00001199- Patch #1507676: Error messages returned by invalid abstract object operations
1200 (such as iterating over an integer) have been improved and now include the
1201 type of the offending object to help with debugging.
1202
Brett Cannonea3912b2006-06-13 21:46:41 +00001203- Bug #992017: A classic class that defined a __coerce__() method that returned
1204 its arguments swapped would infinitely recurse and segfault the interpreter.
1205
Neal Norwitz909eb122006-06-12 02:13:21 +00001206- Fix the socket tests so they can be run concurrently.
1207
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +00001208- Removed 5 integers from C frame objects (PyFrameObject).
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +00001209 f_nlocals, f_ncells, f_nfreevars, f_stack_size, f_restricted.
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +00001210
Brett Cannon22565aa2006-06-09 22:31:23 +00001211- Bug #532646: object.__call__() will continue looking for the __call__
1212 attribute on objects until one without one is found. This leads to recursion
1213 when you take a class and set its __call__ attribute to an instance of the
1214 class. Originally fixed for classic classes, but this fix is for new-style.
1215 Removes the infinite_rec_3 crasher.
1216
Georg Brandl24250812006-06-09 18:45:48 +00001217- The string and unicode methods startswith() and endswith() now accept
1218 a tuple of prefixes/suffixes to look for. Implements RFE #1491485.
1219
Brett Cannonde3b0522006-06-08 17:00:45 +00001220- Buffer objects, at the C level, never used the char buffer
1221 implementation even when the char buffer for the wrapped object was
1222 explicitly requested (originally returned the read or write buffer).
1223 Now a TypeError is raised if the char buffer is not present but is
1224 requested.
1225
Georg Brandlddbaa662006-06-04 21:56:52 +00001226- Patch #1346214: Statements like "if 0: suite" are now again optimized
1227 away like they were in Python 2.4.
1228
Georg Brandlb7c8f542006-05-27 12:30:25 +00001229- Builtin exceptions are now full-blown new-style classes instead of
1230 instances pretending to be classes, which speeds up exception handling
1231 by about 80% in comparison to 2.5a2.
1232
Martin v. Löwisd004fc82006-05-27 08:36:52 +00001233- Patch #1494554: Update unicodedata.numeric and unicode.isnumeric to
1234 Unicode 4.1.
1235
Georg Brandlf4ef1162006-05-26 18:03:31 +00001236- Patch #921466: sys.path_importer_cache is now used to cache valid and
1237 invalid file paths for the built-in import machinery which leads to
1238 fewer open calls on startup.
1239
Tim Peters696cf432006-05-24 21:10:40 +00001240- Patch #1442927: ``long(str, base)`` is now up to 6x faster for non-power-
1241 of-2 bases. The largest speedup is for inputs with about 1000 decimal
1242 digits. Conversion from non-power-of-2 bases remains quadratic-time in
1243 the number of input digits (it was and remains linear-time for bases
1244 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32).
1245
Tim Petersb713ec22006-05-23 18:45:30 +00001246- Bug #1334662: ``int(string, base)`` could deliver a wrong answer
1247 when ``base`` was not 2, 4, 8, 10, 16 or 32, and ``string`` represented
1248 an integer close to ``sys.maxint``. This was repaired by patch
1249 #1335972, which also gives a nice speedup.
1250
Richard Jonescebbefc2006-05-23 18:28:17 +00001251- Patch #1337051: reduced size of frame objects.
1252
1253- PyErr_NewException now accepts a tuple of base classes as its
1254 "base" parameter.
1255
Richard Jones7c88dcc2006-05-23 10:37:38 +00001256- Patch #876206: function call speedup by retaining allocated frame
1257 objects.
1258
Georg Brandl7b90e162006-05-18 07:01:27 +00001259- Bug #1462152: file() now checks more thoroughly for invalid mode
1260 strings and removes a possible "U" before passing the mode to the
1261 C library function.
1262
Neal Norwitz1004a532006-05-15 07:17:23 +00001263- Patch #1488312, Fix memory alignment problem on SPARC in unicode
1264
Neal Norwitz373f0a72006-05-15 07:04:36 +00001265- Bug #1487966: Fix SystemError with conditional expression in assignment
1266
Martin v. Löwis879768d2006-05-11 13:28:43 +00001267- WindowsError now has two error code attributes: errno, which carries
1268 the error values from errno.h, and winerror, which carries the error
1269 values from winerror.h. Previous versions put the winerror.h values
1270 (from GetLastError()) into the errno attribute.
1271
Martin v. Löwis77736712006-05-04 05:51:03 +00001272- Patch #1475845: Raise IndentationError for unexpected indent.
1273
Neal Norwitzc4edb0e2006-05-02 04:43:14 +00001274- Patch #1479181: split open() and file() from being aliases for each other.
1275
Tim Peters44bd9862006-06-01 13:49:23 +00001276- Patch #1497053 & bug #1275608: Exceptions occurring in ``__eq__()``
1277 methods were always silently ignored by dictionaries when comparing keys.
1278 They are now passed through (except when using the C API function
1279 ``PyDict_GetItem()``, whose semantics did not change).
1280
1281- Bug #1456209: In some obscure cases it was possible for a class with a
1282 custom ``__eq__()`` method to confuse dict internals when class instances
1283 were used as a dict's keys and the ``__eq__()`` method mutated the dict.
1284 No, you don't have any code that did this ;-)

Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00001286Extension Modules
1287-----------------
1288
Trent Mick960a3f82006-06-28 20:30:41 +00001289- Bug #1295808: expat symbols should be namespaced in pyexpat
1290
1291- Patch #1462338: Upgrade pyexpat to expat 2.0.0
1292
Brett Cannon6ee7d012006-06-08 16:23:04 +00001293- Change binascii.hexlify to accept a read-only buffer instead of only a char
1294 buffer and actually follow its documentation.
1295
Hye-Shik Chang58ce5bc2006-06-05 00:59:54 +00001296- Fixed a potentially invalid memory access of CJKCodecs' shift-jis decoder.
1297
Nick Coghlanc649ec52006-05-29 12:43:05 +00001298- Patch #1478788 (modified version): The functional extension module has
1299 been renamed to _functools and a functools Python wrapper module added.
1300 This provides a home for additional function related utilities that are
1301 not specifically about functional programming. See PEP 309.
1302
Bob Ippolito7ccc95a2006-05-23 19:11:34 +00001303- Patch #1493701: performance enhancements for struct module.

1308 copy() method.
1309
Andrew MacIntyre92913322006-06-13 15:04:24 +00001310- Patch #1454481: thread stack size is now tunable at runtime for thread
1311 enabled builds on Windows and systems with Posix threads support.
1312
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00001313- On Win32, os.listdir now supports arbitrarily-long Unicode path names
1314 (up to the system limit of 32K characters).
1315
1316- Use Win32 API to implement os.{access,chdir,chmod,mkdir,remove,rename,rmdir,utime}.
1317 As a result, these functions now raise WindowsError instead of OSError.
1318
Tim Peters7a822da2006-05-25 21:50:17 +00001319- ``time.clock()`` on Win64 should use the high-performance Windows
1320 ``QueryPerformanceCounter()`` now (as was already the case on 32-bit
1321 Windows platforms).
1322
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00001323- Calling Tk_Init twice is refused if the first call failed as that
1324 may deadlock.
1325
Gregory P. Smith0459e4d2006-06-05 02:02:25 +00001326- bsddb: added the DB_ARCH_REMOVE flag and fixed db.DBEnv.log_archive() to
1327 accept it without potentially using an uninitialized pointer.
1328
1329- bsddb: added support for the DBEnv.log_stat() and DBEnv.lsn_reset() methods
1330 assuming BerkeleyDB >= 4.0 and 4.4 respectively. [pybsddb project SF
1331 patch numbers 1494885 and 1494902]

1337 parameter is supplied. [SF pybsddb bug #1477863]
1338
Gregory P. Smith3c228b12006-06-05 23:59:37 +00001339- bsddb: the __len__ method of a DB object has been fixed to return correct
1340 results. It could previously incorrectly return 0 in some cases.
1341 Fixes SF bug 1493322 (pybsddb bug 1184012).
1342
Gregory P. Smithff7d9912006-06-08 05:17:08 +00001343- bsddb: the bsddb.dbtables Modify method now raises the proper error and
1344 aborts the db transaction safely when a modifier callback fails.
1345 Fixes SF python patch/bug #1408584.
1346
Gregory P. Smith506f7b52006-06-15 08:52:32 +00001347- bsddb: multithreaded DB access using the simple bsddb module interface
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +00001348 now works reliably. It has been updated to use automatic BerkeleyDB

1380 double-byte encodings.
1381
Tim Peters43898b42006-06-14 04:09:25 +00001382- ``difflib``'s ``SequenceMatcher.get_matching_blocks()`` was changed to
1383 guarantee that adjacent triples in the return list always describe
1384 non-adjacent blocks. Previously, a pair of matching blocks could end
1385 up being described by multiple adjacent triples that formed a partition
1386 of the matching pair.
1387
Greg Ward0e0c9f42006-06-11 16:24:11 +00001388- Bug #1498146: fix optparse to handle Unicode strings in option help,

1397
Nick Coghlan676725d2006-06-08 13:54:49 +00001398- The functions update_wrapper() and wraps() have been added to the functools
1399 module. These make it easier to copy relevant metadata from the original
1400 function when writing wrapper functions.
1401

Tim Petersbf0400a2006-06-05 01:43:03 +00001404
Martin v. Löwis3f767792006-06-04 19:36:28 +00001405- Patch #1359618: Speed up charmap encoder by using a trie structure
1406 for lookup.
1407
Tim Petersd609b1a2006-06-02 23:22:51 +00001408- The functions in the ``pprint`` module now sort dictionaries by key
1409 before computing the display. Before 2.5, ``pprint`` sorted a dictionary
1410 if and only if its display required more than one line, although that
1411 wasn't documented. The new behavior increases predictability; e.g.,
1412 using ``pprint.pprint(a_dict)`` in a doctest is now reliable.
1413
Georg Brandlfd9a4b12006-05-29 20:57:01 +00001414- Patch #1497027: try HTTP digest auth before basic auth in urllib2

1432 tarfiles.
1433
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00001434- Patch #721464: pdb.Pdb instances can now be given explicit stdin and

1489Core and builtins
1490-----------------
1491
Thomas Heller1b046642006-04-18 18:51:06 +00001492- Bug #1465834: 'bdist_wininst preinstall script support' was fixed
1493 by converting these apis from macros into exported functions again:
1494
1495 PyParser_SimpleParseFile PyParser_SimpleParseString PyRun_AnyFile
1496 PyRun_AnyFileEx PyRun_AnyFileFlags PyRun_File PyRun_FileEx
1497 PyRun_FileFlags PyRun_InteractiveLoop PyRun_InteractiveOne
1498 PyRun_SimpleFile PyRun_SimpleFileEx PyRun_SimpleString
1499 PyRun_String Py_CompileString
1500
Martin v. Löwis45294a92006-04-18 06:24:08 +00001501- Under COUNT_ALLOCS, types are not necessarily immortal anymore.
1502
Martin v. Löwis19ab6c92006-04-16 18:55:50 +00001503- All uses of PyStructSequence_InitType have been changed to initialize
1504 the type objects only once, even if the interpreter is initialized
1505 multiple times.
1506
Neal Norwitz61546162006-04-14 05:20:28 +00001507- Bug #1454485, array.array('u') could crash the interpreter. This was
1508 due to PyArgs_ParseTuple(args, 'u#', ...) trying to convert buffers (strings)
1509 to unicode when it didn't make sense. 'u#' now requires a unicode string.
1510
1511- Py_UNICODE is unsigned. It was always documented as unsigned, but
1512 due to a bug had a signed value in previous versions.
1513
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001514- Patch #837242: ``id()`` of any Python object always gives a positive
1515 number now, which might be a long integer. ``PyLong_FromVoidPtr`` and
1516 ``PyLong_AsVoidPtr`` have been changed accordingly. Note that it has
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001517 never been correct to implement a ``__hash()__`` method that returns the
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001518 ``id()`` of an object:
Martin v. Löwis0bc2ab92006-04-10 20:28:17 +00001519
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001520 def __hash__(self):
1521 return id(self) # WRONG
1522
1523 because a hash result must be a (short) Python int but it was always
1524 possible for ``id()`` to return a Python long. However, because ``id()``
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001525 could return negative values before, on a 32-bit box an ``id()`` result
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001526 was always usable as a hash value before this patch. That's no longer
1527 necessarily so.
1528
1529- Python on OS X 10.3 and above now uses dlopen() (via dynload_shlib.c)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001530 to load extension modules and now provides the dl module. As a result,
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001531 sys.setdlopenflags() now works correctly on these systems. (SF patch
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001532 #1454844)
1533
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001534- Patch #1463867: enhanced garbage collection to allow cleanup of cycles
1535 involving generators that have paused outside of any ``try`` or ``with``
1536 blocks. (In 2.5a1, a paused generator that was part of a reference
1537 cycle could not be garbage collected, regardless of whether it was
1538 paused in a ``try`` or ``with`` block.)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001539
Anthony Baxter51bcb682006-04-05 14:51:42 +00001540Extension Modules

1552 the cachesize parameter.
1553
1554- Bug #1149413: bsddb.*open() no longer raises an exception when using
1555 a temporary db (file=None) with the 'n' flag to truncate on open.
1556
1557- Bug #1332852: bsddb module minimum BerkeleyDB version raised to 3.3
1558 as older versions cause excessive test failures.
Gregory P. Smith7f5b6f42006-04-08 07:10:51 +00001559
Armin Rigoa9017c32006-04-19 11:50:27 +00001560- Patch #1062014: AF_UNIX sockets under Linux have a special
1561 abstract namespace that is now fully supported.

1564-------
1565
Peter Astrand7d1d4362006-07-14 14:04:45 +00001566- Bug #1223937: subprocess.CalledProcessError reports the exit status
1567 of the process using the returncode attribute, instead of
1568 abusing errno.
1569
Tim Peters711bf302006-04-25 03:31:36 +00001570- Patch #1475231: ``doctest`` has a new ``SKIP`` option, which causes
1571 a doctest to be skipped (the code is not run, and the expected output
1572 or exception is ignored).
1573
Nick Coghlanda2268f2006-04-24 04:37:15 +00001574- Fixed contextlib.nested to cope with exceptions being raised and
1575 caught inside exit handlers.
1576
Greg Wardab05edc2006-04-23 03:47:58 +00001577- Updated optparse module to Optik 1.5.1 (allow numeric constants in
1578 hex, octal, or binary; add ``append_const`` action; keep going if
1579 gettext cannot be imported; added ``OptionParser.destroy()`` method;
1580 added ``epilog`` for better help generation).
1581
Tim Peters21fbd572006-04-21 21:18:10 +00001582- Bug #1473760: ``tempfile.TemporaryFile()`` could hang on Windows, when
1583 called from a thread spawned as a side effect of importing a module.
1584
Phillip J. Eby17a35f92006-04-18 16:45:14 +00001585- The pydoc module now supports documenting packages contained in
1586 .zip or .egg files.
1587
1588- The pkgutil module now has several new utility functions, such
1589 as ``walk_packages()`` to support working with packages that are either
1590 in the filesystem or zip files.
1591
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001592- The mailbox module can now modify and delete messages from
1593 mailboxes, in addition to simply reading them. Thanks to Gregory
1594 K. Johnson for writing the code, and to the 2005 Google Summer of
1595 Code for funding his work.
Phillip J. Eby17a35f92006-04-18 16:45:14 +00001596

Andrew M. Kuchlingdb4018f2006-04-14 14:54:18 +00001635 specified. (Can be overridden by explicitly setting LINKCC.) Decouple
Martin v. Löwis0f48d982006-04-14 14:34:26 +00001636 CXX from --with-cxx-main, see description in README.
1637

Tim Peters8931ff12006-05-13 23:28:20 +00001642- ``PyString_FromFormat``, ``PyErr_Format``, and ``PyString_FromFormatV``
1643 now accept formats "%u" for unsigned ints, "%lu" for unsigned longs,
1644 and "%zu" for unsigned integers of type ``size_t``.
1645
Anthony Baxter51bcb682006-04-05 14:51:42 +00001646Tests
1647-----
1648

1653
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001654- The test_contextlib test in 2.5a1 wasn't actually run unless you ran
1655 it separately and by hand. It also wasn't cleaning up its changes to
1656 the current Decimal context.
1657
Thomas Woutersabd08882006-04-26 15:53:30 +00001658- regrtest.py now has a -M option to run tests that test the new limits of
1659 containers, on 64-bit architectures. Running these tests is only sensible
1660 on 64-bit machines with more than two gigabytes of memory. The argument
1661 passed is the maximum amount of memory for the tests to use.
1662

Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00001687Core and builtins
1688-----------------
1689
Nick Coghlan43832302006-04-23 17:04:07 +00001690- PEP 338: -m command line switch now delegates to runpy.run_module
1691 allowing it to support modules in packages and zipfiles
1692
Martin v. Löwisc661b882006-04-20 04:54:23 +00001693- On Windows, .DLL is not an accepted file name extension for
1694 extension modules anymore; extensions are only found if they
1695 end in .PYD.
1696
Martin v. Löwisea62d252006-04-03 10:56:49 +00001697- Bug #1421664: sys.stderr.encoding is now set to the same value as
1698 sys.stdout.encoding.
1699
Neal Norwitz92e212f2006-04-03 04:48:37 +00001700- __import__ accepts keyword arguments.
1701
Georg Brandlccadf842006-03-31 18:54:53 +00001702- Patch #1460496: round() now accepts keyword arguments.
1703
Anthony Baxter262c00a2006-03-30 10:53:17 +00001704- Fixed bug #1459029 - unicode reprs were double-escaped.
1705
Hye-Shik Changd478f342006-03-23 12:32:36 +00001706- Patch #1396919: The system scope threads are reenabled on FreeBSD
1707 5.4 and later versions.
1708
Neal Norwitze98ccf62006-03-23 05:39:47 +00001709- Bug #1115379: Compiling a Unicode string with an encoding declaration
1710 now gives a SyntaxError.
1711
Georg Brandlabd1ff82006-03-18 07:59:59 +00001712- Previously, Python code had no easy way to access the contents of a
1713 cell object. Now, a ``cell_contents`` attribute has been added
1714 (closes patch #1170323).
1715
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001716- Patch #1123430: Python's small-object allocator now returns an arena to
1717 the system ``free()`` when all memory within an arena becomes unused
1718 again. Prior to Python 2.5, arenas (256KB chunks of memory) were never
1719 freed. Some applications will see a drop in virtual memory size now,
1720 especially long-running applications that, from time to time, temporarily
1721 use a large number of small objects. Note that when Python returns an
1722 arena to the platform C's ``free()``, there's no guarantee that the
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001723 platform C library will in turn return that memory to the operating system.
1724 The effect of the patch is to stop making that impossible, and in tests it
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001725 appears to be effective at least on Microsoft C and gcc-based systems.
1726 Thanks to Evan Jones for hard work and patience.
1727
Georg Brandl533ff6f2006-03-08 18:09:27 +00001728- Patch #1434038: property() now uses the getter's docstring if there is
1729 no "doc" argument given. This makes it possible to legitimately use
1730 property() as a decorator to produce a read-only property.
1731
Guido van Rossum9aa37ab2006-03-07 18:54:08 +00001732- PEP 357, patch 1436368: add an __index__ method to int/long and a matching
1733 nb_index slot to the PyNumberMethods struct. The slot is consulted instead
1734 of requiring an int or long in slicing and a few other contexts, enabling
1735 other objects (e.g. Numeric Python's integers) to be used as slice indices.
1736
Neal Norwitz995acdf2006-03-07 05:01:00 +00001737- Fixed various bugs reported by Coverity's Prevent tool.
1738
Brett Cannonbf364092006-03-01 04:25:17 +00001739- PEP 352, patch #1104669: Make exceptions new-style objects. Introduced the
1740 new exception base class, BaseException, which has a new message attribute.
1741 KeyboardInterrupt and SystemExit to directly inherit from BaseException now.
1742 Raising a string exception now raises a DeprecationWarning.
1743
Thomas Woutersfb609f42006-02-28 16:37:25 +00001744- Patch #1438387, PEP 328: relative and absolute imports. Imports can now be
1745 explicitly relative, using 'from .module import name' to mean 'from the same
1746 package as this module is in. Imports without dots still default to the
1747 old relative-then-absolute, unless 'from __future__ import
1748 absolute_import' is used.
1749
Brett Cannona7446e32006-02-27 23:39:10 +00001750- Properly check if 'warnings' raises an exception (usually when a filter set
1751 to "error" is triggered) when raising a warning for raising string
1752 exceptions.
1753
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001754- CO_GENERATOR_ALLOWED is no longer defined. This behavior is the default.
Neal Norwitz0023a2f2006-02-27 23:24:48 +00001755 The name was removed from Include/code.h.
1756
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001757- PEP 308: conditional expressions were added: (x if cond else y).
Neal Norwitzeb651252006-02-27 16:47:12 +00001758
Guido van Rossum1968ad32006-02-25 22:38:04 +00001759- Patch 1433928:
1760 - The copy module now "copies" function objects (as atomic objects).
1761 - dict.__getitem__ now looks for a __missing__ hook before raising
1762 KeyError.
1763
Tim Peters84ef21c2006-02-28 20:39:06 +00001764- PEP 343: with statement implemented. Needs ``from __future__ import
1765 with_statement``. Use of 'with' as a variable will generate a warning.
1766 Use of 'as' as a variable will also generate a warning (unless it's
Neal Norwitz055ec242006-02-28 20:06:49 +00001767 part of an import statement).
Guido van Rossum1a5e21e2006-02-28 21:57:43 +00001768 The following objects have __context__ methods:
1769 - The built-in file type.
1770 - The thread.LockType type.
1771 - The following types defined by the threading module:
1772 Lock, RLock, Condition, Semaphore, BoundedSemaphore.
1773 - The decimal.Context class.
Guido van Rossumc2e20742006-02-27 22:32:47 +00001774
Marc-André Lemburgfe4b34c2006-02-19 15:22:22 +00001775- Fix the encodings package codec search function to only search
1776 inside its own package. Fixes problem reported in patch #1433198.
1777
1778 Note: Codec packages should implement and register their own
1779 codec search function. PEP 100 has the details.
1780
Tim Peters9ea89d22006-06-04 03:26:02 +00001781- PEP 353: Using ``Py_ssize_t`` as the index type.
1782
1783- ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` builds now add ``4*sizeof(size_t)`` bytes of debugging
1784 info to each allocated block, since the ``Py_ssize_t`` changes (PEP 353)
1785 now allow Python to make use of memory blocks exceeding 2**32 bytes for
1786 some purposes on 64-bit boxes. A ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` build was limited
1787 to 4-byte allocations before.

1853
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001854- All iterators now have a Boolean value of True. Formerly, some iterators
Raymond Hettinger6b27cda2005-09-24 21:23:05 +00001855 supported a __len__() method which evaluated to False when the iterator
1856 was empty.
1857
Guido van Rossum630db602005-09-20 18:49:54 +00001858- On 64-bit platforms, when __len__() returns a value that cannot be

1878
Barry Warsawe2eca0b2005-08-15 18:14:19 +00001879- SF bug #900092: When tracing (e.g. for hotshot), restore 'return' events for
1880 exceptions that cause a function to exit.
1881
Raymond Hettinger9f1a6792005-07-31 01:16:36 +00001882- The implementation of set() and frozenset() was revised to use its
1883 own internal data structure. Memory consumption is reduced by 1/3
1884 and there are modest speed-ups as well. The API is unchanged.
1885
Tim Petersde7990b2005-07-17 23:45:23 +00001886- SF bug #1238681: freed pointer is used in longobject.c:long_pow().
1887

1889 reference counts in some error exit cases.
1890
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001891- SF bug #1185883: Python's small-object memory allocator took over
1892 a block managed by the platform C library whenever a realloc specified
1893 a small new size. However, there's no portable way to know then how
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001894 much of the address space following the pointer is valid, so there's no
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001895 portable way to copy data from the C-managed block into Python's
1896 small-object space without risking a memory fault. Python's small-object
1897 realloc now leaves such blocks under the control of the platform C
1898 realloc.

1902
Raymond Hettinger3296e692005-06-29 23:29:56 +00001903- SF bug #1224347: hex longs now print with lowercase letters just
1904 like their int counterparts.
1905
Michael W. Hudson188d4362005-06-20 16:52:57 +00001906- SF bug #1163563: the original fix for bug #1010677 ("thread Module
1907 Breaks PyGILState_Ensure()") broke badly in the case of multiple
1908 interpreter states; back out that fix and do a better job (see

1911
Michael W. Hudsondf888462005-06-03 14:41:55 +00001912- SF patch #1180995: marshal now uses a binary format by default when
1913 serializing floats.
1914
Michael W. Hudsonda85a902005-06-01 11:34:22 +00001915- SF patch #1181301: on platforms that appear to use IEEE 754 floats,
1916 the routines that promise to produce IEEE 754 binary representations
1917 of floats now simply copy bytes around.
1918
Skip Montanarobbf12ba2005-05-20 03:07:06 +00001919- bug #967182: disallow opening files with 'wU' or 'aU' as specified by PEP
1920 278.
1921
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001922- patch #1109424: int, long, float, complex, and unicode now check for the
1923 proper magic slot for type conversions when subclassed. Previously the
1924 magic slot was ignored during conversion. Semantics now match the way
1925 subclasses of str always behaved. int/long/float, conversion of an instance
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00001926 to the base class has been moved to the proper nb_* magic slot and out of
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001927 PyNumber_*().
Neal Norwitzcfba5f82006-04-25 05:05:03 +00001928 Thanks Walter Drwald.

Barry Warsawc8d907c2005-04-19 23:43:40 +00001930- Descriptors defined in C with a PyGetSetDef structure, where the setter is
1931 NULL, now raise an AttributeError when attempting to set or delete the
1932 attribute. Previously a TypeError was raised, but this was inconsistent
1933 with the equivalent pure-Python implementation.
1934
Michael W. Hudson774479c2005-04-18 08:46:17 +00001935- It is now safe to call PyGILState_Release() before
1936 PyEval_InitThreads() (note that if there is reason to believe there
1937 are multiple threads around you still must call PyEval_InitThreads()
1938 before using the Python API; this fix is for extension modules that
1939 have no way of knowing if Python is multi-threaded yet).
1940
Michael W. Hudsone3afc592005-04-07 10:11:19 +00001941- Typing Ctrl-C whilst raw_input() was waiting in a build with threads
1942 disabled caused a crash.
1943
Michael W. Hudsonb330adf2005-03-31 09:35:44 +00001944- Bug #1165306: instancemethod_new allowed the creation of a method
1945 with im_class == im_self == NULL, which caused a crash when called.
1946
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001947- Move exception finalisation later in the shutdown process - this
Anthony Baxter12b6f6c2005-03-29 13:36:16 +00001948 fixes the crash seen in bug #1165761
1949
Raymond Hettinger96229b12005-03-11 06:49:40 +00001950- Added two new builtins, any() and all().
1951
Brett Cannon409d8f22005-03-05 06:47:57 +00001952- Defining a class with empty parentheses is now allowed
Brett Cannonf4189912005-04-09 02:30:16 +00001953 (e.g., ``class C(): pass`` is no longer a syntax error).
1954 Patch #1176012 added support to the 'parser' module and 'compiler' package
1955 (thanks to logistix for that added support).

1969
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001970- Bug #1074011: closing sys.std{out,err} now causes a flush() and
Martin v. Löwis8e3ca8a2005-01-23 09:41:49 +00001971 an ferror() call.
1972
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00001973- min() and max() now support key= arguments with the same meaning as in

1978
Raymond Hettingera422c342005-01-11 03:03:27 +00001979- set and frozenset objects can now be marshalled. SF #1098985.
1980
Michael W. Hudsonfaa76482005-01-31 17:09:25 +00001981- Bug #1077106: Poor argument checking could cause memory corruption

1986 statement occurs after anything other than a doc string.
1987
Neil Schemenauercf52c072005-08-12 17:34:58 +00001988- Change the %s format specifier for str objects so that it returns a
1989 unicode instance if the argument is not an instance of basestring and
1990 calling __str__ on the argument returns a unicode instance.
1991
Tim Petersf4e69282006-02-27 17:15:31 +00001992- Patch #1413181: changed ``PyThreadState_Delete()`` to forget about the
1993 current thread state when the auto-GIL-state machinery knows about
1994 it (since the thread state is being deleted, continuing to remember it
1995 can't help, but can hurt if another thread happens to get created with
1996 the same thread id).

2237 now used (e.g. mail.message instead of email.Message). The MIME classes
2238 have been moved to a subpackage (e.g. email.mime.text instead of

2332 "The consensus of researchers in this area (at least as
2333 expressed at the NIST Hash Function Workshop 10/31/05),
2334 is that SHA-256 is a good choice for the time being, but
2335 that research should continue, and other alternatives may

2513
Martin v. Löwis22b457e2005-01-16 08:40:58 +00002514- os.{SEEK_SET, SEEK_CUR, SEEK_END} have been added for convenience.
2515
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002516- Enhancements to the csv module:
2517
2518 + Dialects are now validated by the underlying C code, better
Georg Brandl7eb4b7d2005-07-22 21:49:32 +00002519 reflecting its capabilities, and improving its compliance with
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002520 PEP 305.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002521 + Dialect parameter parsing has been re-implemented to improve error
2522 reporting.
2523 + quotechar=None and quoting=QUOTE_NONE now work the way PEP 305
2524 dictates.
2525 + the parser now removes the escapechar prefix from escaped characters.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002526 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the writer now tests for numeric
Andrew M. Kuchling6db67822006-04-18 14:04:57 +00002527 types, rather than any object that can be represented as a numeric.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002528 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the reader now casts unquoted fields
2529 to floats.
Andrew McNamaraf69d94f2005-01-13 11:30:54 +00002530 + reader now allows \r characters to be quoted (previously it only allowed
2531 \n to be quoted).
Andrew McNamarac89f2842005-01-12 07:44:42 +00002532 + writer doublequote handling improved.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002533 + Dialect classes passed to the module are no longer instantiated by
2534 the module before being parsed (the former validation scheme required
2535 this, but the mechanism was unreliable).
2536 + The dialect registry now contains instances of the internal
2537 C-coded dialect type, rather than references to python objects.
2538 + the internal c-coded dialect type is now immutable.
2539 + register_dialect now accepts the same keyword dialect specifications
2540 as the reader and writer, allowing the user to register dialects
2541 without first creating a dialect class.
2542 + a configurable limit to the size of parsed fields has been added -
2543 previously, an unmatched quote character could result in the entire
2544 file being read into the field buffer before an error was reported.
Andrew McNamara31d88962005-01-12 03:45:10 +00002545 + A new module method csv.field_size_limit() has been added that sets
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002546 the parser field size limit (returning the former limit). The initial
2547 limit is 128kB.
Andrew McNamara7f2053e2005-01-12 11:17:16 +00002548 + A line_num attribute has been added to the reader object, which tracks
2549 the number of lines read from the source iterator. This is not
2550 the same as the number of records returned, as records can span
2551 multiple lines.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002552 + reader and writer objects were not being registered with the cyclic-GC.
2553 This has been fixed.
2554
Brett Cannone6539c42005-01-08 02:43:53 +00002555- _DummyThread objects in the threading module now delete self.__block that is
2556 inherited from _Thread since it uses up a lock allocated by 'thread'. The
2557 lock primitives tend to be limited in number and thus should not be wasted on
2558 a _DummyThread object. Fixes bug #1089632.
2559
Raymond Hettinger97db05d2005-01-07 08:15:41 +00002560- The imghdr module now detects Exif files.
2561
Raymond Hettinger6065d322004-12-20 23:51:53 +00002562- StringIO.truncate() now correctly adjusts the size attribute.
2563 (Bug #951915).
2564
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002565- locale.py now uses an updated locale alias table (built using

Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002589- heapq.nsmallest() and heapq.nlargest() now support key= arguments with
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00002590 the same meaning as in list.sort().
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002591
Walter Dörwald36733692004-12-22 12:50:50 +00002592- Bug #1076985: ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` now calls ``read()`` only
2593 once when a size argument is given. This prevents a buffer overflow in the
2594 tokenizer with very long source lines.
2595
Barry Warsaw538561e2006-01-01 21:48:54 +00002596- Bug #1083110: ``zlib.decompress.flush()`` would segfault if called

2607 correctly.
2608
Walter Dörwaldbc8e6422005-04-21 21:32:03 +00002609- Partial fixes for SF bugs #1163244 and #1175396: If a chunk read by
2610 ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` has a trailing "\r", read one more
2611 character even if the user has passed a size parameter to get a proper
2612 line ending. Remove the special handling of a "\r\n" that has been split
2613 between two lines.
2614
Walter Dörwalda47d1c02005-08-30 10:23:14 +00002615- Bug #1251300: On UCS-4 builds the "unicode-internal" codec will now complain
2616 about illegal code points. The codec now supports PEP 293 style error
2617 handlers.
2618
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00002619- Bug #1235646: ``codecs.StreamRecoder.next()`` now reencodes the data it reads
Walter Dörwaldc5238b82005-09-01 11:56:53 +00002620 from the input stream, so that the output is a byte string in the correct
2621 encoding instead of a unicode string.

Gustavo Niemeyer6fa0c5a2005-09-14 08:54:39 +00002623- Bug #1202493: Fixing SRE parser to handle '{}' as perl does, rather than
2624 considering it exactly like a '*'.
2625
Walter Dörwald007f8df2005-10-09 19:42:27 +00002626- Bug #1245379: Add "unicode-1-1-utf-7" as an alias for "utf-7" to
2627 ``encodings.aliases``.
Gustavo Niemeyer6fa0c5a2005-09-14 08:54:39 +00002628
Walter Dörwald09f0dd52005-11-21 19:10:07 +00002629- ` uu.encode()`` and ``uu.decode()`` now support unicode filenames.
2630
Gustavo Niemeyer548148812006-01-31 18:34:13 +00002631- Patch #1413711: Certain patterns of differences were making difflib
2632 touch the recursion limit.
2633
Walter Dörwald58917a62006-03-31 15:26:22 +00002634- Bug #947906: An object oriented interface has been added to the calendar
2635 module. It's possible to generate HTML calendar now and the module can be
Walter Dörwald48d5e502006-04-01 07:57:00 +00002636 called as a script (e.g. via ``python -mcalendar``). Localized month and
2637 weekday names can be ouput (even if an exotic encoding is used) using
2638 special classes that use unicode.

2653
Martin v. Löwis64c33dd2006-01-03 07:42:14 +00002654- The sources of zlib are now part of the Python distribution (zlib 1.2.3).
2655 The zlib module is now builtin on Windows.
2656

2660 value of LINKCC if python was built with GCC 4.0.
2661
Trent Mick8321b422005-07-26 02:29:21 +00002662- Upgrade Windows build to zlib 1.2.3 which eliminates a potential security
2663 vulnerability in zlib 1.2.1 and 1.2.2.
2664
Brett Cannon08cd5982005-04-24 22:26:38 +00002665- EXTRA_CFLAGS has been introduced as an environment variable to hold compiler
2666 flags that change binary compatibility. Changes were also made to
2667 distutils.sysconfig to also use the environment variable when used during
Martin v. Löwisd7c795e2005-04-25 07:14:03 +00002668 compilation of the interpreter and of C extensions through distutils.
Brett Cannon08cd5982005-04-24 22:26:38 +00002669
Bob Ippolitoed233462005-03-29 13:47:59 +00002670- SF patch 1171735: Darwin 8's headers are anal about POSIX compliance,
2671 and linking has changed (prebinding is now deprecated, and libcc_dynamic
2672 no longer exists). This configure patch makes things right.
2673
Martin v. Löwise2713be2005-03-08 15:03:08 +00002674- Bug #1158607: Build with --disable-unicode again.
2675
Brett Cannon46d96232005-02-16 00:07:19 +00002676- spwdmodule.c is built only if either HAVE_GETSPNAM or HAVE_HAVE_GETSPENT is
2677 defined. Discovered as a result of not being able to build on OS X.
2678
Brett Cannon516592f2004-12-07 00:42:59 +00002679- setup.py now uses the directories specified in LDFLAGS using the -L option
2680 and in CPPFLAGS using the -I option for adding library and include
2681 directories, respectively, for compiling extension modules against. This has
2682 led to the core being compiled using the values in CPPFLAGS. It also removes
2683 the need for the special-casing of both DarwinPorts and Fink for darwin since
2684 the proper directories can be specified in LDFLAGS (``-L/sw/lib`` for Fink,
2685 ``-L/opt/local/lib`` for DarwinPorts) and CPPFLAGS (``-I/sw/include`` for
2686 Fink, ``-I/opt/local/include`` for DarwinPorts).
2687
Brett Cannon43802422005-02-10 20:48:03 +00002688- Test in configure.in that checks for tzset no longer dependent on tm->tm_zone
2689 to exist in the struct (not required by either ISO C nor the UNIX 2 spec).
2690 Tests for sanity in tzname when HAVE_TZNAME defined were also defined.
2691 Closes bug #1096244. Thanks Gregory Bond.
2692
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002693C API
2694-----
2695
Tim Petersc9d78aa2006-03-26 23:27:58 +00002696- ``PyMem_{Del, DEL}`` and ``PyMem_{Free, FREE}`` no longer map to
2697 ``PyObject_{Free, FREE}``. They map to the system ``free()`` now. If memory
2698 is obtained via the ``PyObject_`` family, it must be released via the
2699 ``PyObject_`` family, and likewise for the ``PyMem_`` family. This has
2700 always been officially true, but when Python's small-object allocator was
2701 introduced, an attempt was made to cater to a few extension modules
2702 discovered at the time that obtained memory via ``PyObject_New`` but
2703 released it via ``PyMem_DEL``. It's years later, and if such code still
2704 exists it will fail now (probably with segfaults, but calling wrong
2705 low-level memory management functions can yield many symptoms).
2706
Raymond Hettingerbeb31012005-08-16 03:47:52 +00002707- Added a C API for set and frozenset objects.
2708
Raymond Hettinger66517482004-12-03 11:45:13 +00002709- Removed PyRange_New().
2710
Walter Dörwaldd1c1e102005-10-06 20:29:57 +00002711- Patch #1313939: PyUnicode_DecodeCharmap() accepts a unicode string as the
2712 mapping argument now. This string is used as a mapping table. Byte values
2713 greater than the length of the string and 0xFFFE are treated as undefined
2714 mappings.
