11
12Core and Builtins
13-----------------
14
Mark Dickinson826f3fe2008-12-05 21:55:28 +000015- Issue #4445: Replace "sizeof(PyStringObject)" with
16 "offsetof(PyStringObject, ob_sval) + 1" when allocating memory for
17 str instances. On a typical machine this saves 3 bytes of memory
18 (on average) per string allocation.
19
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcdc619012008-11-22 20:01:18 +000020- Issue #3996: On Windows, the PyOS_CheckStack function would cause the
21 interpreter to abort ("Fatal Python error: Could not reset the stack!")
22 instead of throwing a MemoryError.
23
Raymond Hettinger7989a4d2008-12-03 15:42:10 +000024- Issue #3689: The list reversed iterator now supports __length_hint__
25 instead of __len__. Behavior now matches other reversed iterators.
26
Benjamin Petersonc078f922008-11-21 22:27:24 +000027- Issue #4367: Python would segfault during compiling when the unicodedata
28 module couldn't be imported and \N escapes were present.
29
Vinay Sajip213faca2008-12-03 23:22:58 +000030- Issue #4233: Changed semantic of ``_fileio.FileIO``'s ``close()``
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc32265652008-11-20 23:34:31 +000031 method on file objects with closefd=False. The file descriptor is still
32 kept open but the file object behaves like a closed file. The ``FileIO``
33 object also got a new readonly attribute ``closefd``.
34
Benjamin Peterson46cc6d12008-11-19 21:49:09 +000035- Issue #4348: Some bytearray methods returned that didn't cause any change to
36 the bytearray, returned the same bytearray instead of a copy.
37
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc7cfe7ea2008-11-18 22:19:37 +000038- Issue #4317: Fixed a crash in the imageop.rgb2rgb8() function.
39
Benjamin Peterson273c2332008-11-17 22:39:09 +000040- Issue #4230: If ``__getattr__`` is a descriptor, it now functions correctly.
41
Benjamin Peterson6624a9f2008-11-03 15:14:51 +000042- Issue #4048: The parser module now correctly validates relative imports.
43
Benjamin Petersondcee09d2008-10-31 02:16:05 +000044- Issue #4225: ``from __future__ import unicode_literals`` didn't work in an
45 exec statement.
46
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc69a9c5b2008-10-30 21:18:34 +000047- Issue #4176: Fixed a crash when pickling an object which ``__reduce__``
48 method does not return iterators for the 4th and 5th items.
49
Benjamin Petersonbdca9422008-10-26 20:21:13 +000050- Issue #4209: Enabling unicode_literals and the print_function in the same
51 __future__ import didn't work.
52
Benjamin Peterson399b1fe2008-10-25 02:53:28 +000053- Using ``nonlocal`` as a variable name will now raise a Py3k SyntaxWarning
Georg Brandl7fb00ad2008-10-25 07:00:52 +000054 because it is a reserved word in 3.x.
Benjamin Peterson399b1fe2008-10-25 02:53:28 +000055
Hirokazu Yamamoto10a018c2008-10-09 10:00:30 +000056- On windows, os.chdir given unicode was not working if GetCurrentDirectoryW
57 returned a path longer than MAX_PATH. (But It's doubtful this code path is
58 really executed because I cannot move to such directory on win2k)
59
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd78b9dc2008-10-07 20:32:10 +000060- Issue #4069: When set.remove(element) is used with a set element, the element
61 is temporarily replaced with an equivalent frozenset. But the eventual
62 KeyError would always report the empty frozenset([]) as the missing key. Now
63 it correctly refers to the initial element.
64
Antoine Pitrouae5bece2008-12-06 21:29:24 +000065- Issue #4509: Various issues surrounding resize of bytearray objects to
66 which there are buffer exports.

75 statements.
76
Georg Brandla07435d2008-12-05 09:23:14 +000077- Issue #4458: getopt.gnu_getopt() now recognizes a single "-" as an argument,
78 not a malformed option.
79
Gregory P. Smith26576802008-12-05 02:27:01 +000080- Added the subprocess.check_output() convenience function to get output
Gregory P. Smith97f49f42008-12-04 20:21:09 +000081 from a subprocess on success or raise an exception on error.
82
Fred Drake52481032008-12-04 18:25:17 +000083- Issue #1055234: cgi.parse_header(): Fixed parsing of header parameters to
84 support unusual filenames (such as those containing semi-colons) in
85 Content-Disposition headers.
86
Vinay Sajip6831d6b2008-12-04 20:32:18 +000087- Issue #4384: Added logging integration with warnings module using
88 captureWarnings(). This change includes a NullHandler which does nothing;
89 it will be of use to library developers who want to avoid the "No handlers
90 could be found for logger XXX" message which can appear if the library user
91 doesn't configure logging.
Vinay Sajip213faca2008-12-03 23:22:58 +000092

239
Martin v. Löwis9fa5a282008-09-11 06:53:30 +0000240- Issue #3642: Suppress warning in obmalloc when size_t is larger than uint.
241
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +0000242- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
243 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
244 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
245 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
246 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
247 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
248 64bit values.
249
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +0000250- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on
251 error.
252
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd3ffb892008-09-09 07:24:30 +0000253- Issue #3777: long() applied to a float object now always return a long
254 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
255 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
256 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
257
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +0000258- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
259 a unicode argument.
260
Benjamin Peterson17f03ca2008-09-01 14:18:30 +0000261- Issue #3683: Fix compilation when --without-threads is given.

Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000264 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +0000265 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
266
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000267- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +0000268 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
269 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
270 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
271 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
272 type object.
273
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +0000274- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.
275
276- Fix memory leaks found with valgrind and update suppressions file.
277
278- Fix compiler warnings in opt mode which would lead to invalid memory reads.
279
280- Fix problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker.
281
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +0000282- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
283 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
284
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +0000285- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
286 ``__delslice__``.
287
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +0000288- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000412
413Core and Builtins
414-----------------
415
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000416- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
417 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
418 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
419 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
420 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
421 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
422 default.
423
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000424- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
425 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
426
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000427- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
428 value again.
429
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000430- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
431 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
432 and introducing s*.
433
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000434- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
435 object was stored in the freelist.
436
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000437- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
438 ValueError consistently across platforms.
439
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000440- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
441 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
442 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
443
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000444- Apply security patches from Apple.
445
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000446- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
447 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
448
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000449- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
450 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
451
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000452- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
453 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
454 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
455
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000456- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
457 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
458 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
459 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
460 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
461 failed have been fixed.
462
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000463Library
464-------
465
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000466- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
467
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000468- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
469 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
470
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000471- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
472 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
473 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
474
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000475- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
476 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
477 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
478 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
479 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
480 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
481
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000482- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
483 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
484
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000485- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
486
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000487- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
488
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000489- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
490
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000491- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
492 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
493
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000494- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
495 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
496
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000497- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
498 in a redirect.
499
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000500- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +0000501 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000502
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +0000503- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
504 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
505
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000506- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
507 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
508 regular expression.
509
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000510- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
511 thread-safe.
512
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +0000513- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
514 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
515 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
516
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +0000517- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
518
Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +0000519- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
520 menu entries were not deleted.
521
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +0000522- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
523 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
524
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000525- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
526 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
527
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000528- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
529 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
530 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
531
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +0000532- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
533 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
534 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
535
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +0000536- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
537 the reload() built-in has been removed.
538

Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000546
Lars Gustäbel727bd0b2008-08-02 11:26:39 +0000547- Issue #3039: Fix tarfile.TarFileCompat.writestr() which always
548 raised an AttributeError.
549

Antoine Pitroude781a42008-08-09 12:43:23 +0000551 asking for a specific length. This problem only affected files opened
552 using the new "io" module, not the built-in open() function.
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000553

576
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +0000577- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a
578 file name rather than a ZipInfo instance, so files are extracted with
579 mode 0600 rather than 000 under Unix.
580
Gregory P. Smitha36f8fe2008-08-04 00:13:29 +0000581- Issue #1857: subprocess.Popen.poll gained an additional _deadstate keyword

Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000620- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
621 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
622 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
623
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000624- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
625 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
626 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
627 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
628 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
629 level.
630
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000631- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
632 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
633 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
634 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
635 all imports from that module to fail.
636
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000637- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly

647 another thread's dictionary.
648
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000649- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
650 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
651 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
652 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
653 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
654 10, -1).
655

697 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000698 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001170- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
1171 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
1172 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
1173 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
1174 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
1175 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
1176 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
1177 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001240- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1241 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1242 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1243 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1244 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1245 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1246 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1247 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1248 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1249 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1250 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1251 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1252 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1253 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1254 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1255 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1256 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1257 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1258 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1259 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1260
1261 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1262 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1263 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1264 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1265 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1266 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1267 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1268 access to the underlying socket used.
1269
1270 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1271 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1272 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001273
1274 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001275 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,

1277 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
1278
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001279 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
1280 suite to run in parallel without issue.

1558
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001559- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1560 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1561 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1562 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1563 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1564 module is:
1565 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1566
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001567- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1568 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1569 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1570 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1571 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1572 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1573
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001574- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1575 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1576 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1577 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1578 PyObject_Format().
1579
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001580- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1581 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1582 state.

1593 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001594
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001595- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
