Barry Warsawba437742008-04-04 01:34:41 +000027
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc96865852008-04-22 21:14:41 +000028- Issue #2670: Fix a failure in urllib2.build_opener(), when passed two
29 handlers that derive the same default base class.
30
Christian Heimese74c8f22008-04-19 02:23:57 +000031- Added kill, terminate and send_signal(sig) to subprocess.Popen.
32

34 module.
35
36- Four new methods were added to the math and cmath modules:
37 acosh, asinh, atanh and log1p.
38
Gregory P. Smith671c5d92008-04-09 18:18:43 +000039- zlib.decompressobj().flush(value) no longer crashes the interpreter when
40 passed a value less than or equal to zero.
41
Brett Cannone9746892008-04-12 23:44:07 +000042- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the original Python
43 code has been kept as backup). This will allow for using the 'warning's
44 machinery in such places as the parser where use of pure Python code is not
Brett Cannonb457dda2008-05-02 02:25:09 +000045 possible. Both the ``showarning()`` and ``formatwarning()`` gain an
46 optional 'line' argument which is not called by default for
Brett Cannon8a232cc2008-05-05 05:32:07 +000047 backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting ``warnings.showwarning()`` to
48 an implementation that lacks support for the ``line`` argument will raise a
49 DeprecationWarning.
Brett Cannone9746892008-04-12 23:44:07 +000050

Thomas Hellerbf027c42008-04-24 18:14:19 +000069 reference to themselves.
70
Gregory P. Smithd59fefb2008-04-22 08:11:33 +000071- The getpass module has been improved on Unix. It now uses /dev/tty
72 by default and uses stderr instead of stdout. A GetPassWarning is
73 issued when input echo cannot be controlled.
Gregory P. Smith41e30182008-04-21 21:31:08 +000074
Skip Montanarob131f042008-04-18 20:35:46 +000075- Issue #2014: Allow XML-RPC datetime objects to have dates before

90 build documentation for more information.
91
Gregory P. Smithaa63d0d2008-04-06 23:11:17 +000092- Issue #815646: Individual file objects may now be used from multiple
93 threads at once without fear of crashing the Python interpreter. If
94 file.close() is called while an object is in use by another thread
95 an IOError exception will be raised and the file will not be closed.
96
Thomas Hellerf7906482008-04-04 19:43:25 +000097- The bundled libffi copy is now in sync with the recently released
98 libffi3.0.5 version, apart from some small changes to
99 Modules/_ctypes/libffi/configure.ac.
100
Fred Drake46c58c12008-04-04 05:41:30 +0000101- Issue #2385: distutils.core.run_script() makes __file__ available, so the
102 controlled environment will more closely mirror the typical script
103 environment. This supports setup.py scripts that refer to data files.
104
Barry Warsawba437742008-04-04 01:34:41 +0000105Tests
106-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000107- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining ports
108 to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an effort to
109 facilitate running multiple instances of the entire regression test suite
110 in parallel without issue. test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such
111 that it will always return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case
112 with the previous implementation, especially if socket options had been
113 set that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
114 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception if it
115 is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the SO_REUSEADDR or
116 SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if available, bind_port()
117 will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on the socket it's been passed.
118 This currently only applies to Windows. This option prevents any other
119 sockets from binding to the host/port we've bound to, thus removing the
120 possibility of the 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it,
121 that occurs when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a
122 host/port that's already been bound by another socket. The optional
123 preferred port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
124 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
125
126 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will pass
127 a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an unused port.
128 The temporary socket object is then closed and deleted, and the port is
129 returned. This method should only be used for obtaining an unused port
130 in order to pass to an external program (i.e. the -accept [port] argument
131 to openssl's s_server mode) or as a parameter to a server-oriented class
132 that doesn't give you direct access to the underlying socket used.
133
134 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used for
135 the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and connect).
136
137 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
138 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
139 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
140 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
141
142 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test suite to
143 run in parallel without issue.

149
Thomas Hellerdc96a772008-04-04 10:07:55 +0000150- Issue #2544: On HP-UX systems, use 'gcc -shared' for linking when
151 gcc is used as compiler.
152
Ronald Oussoren580c7fe2008-05-02 19:45:11 +0000153- Issue #2573: On MacOS X it is now possible to install the framework
154 with a different name using --with-framework-name=NAME.

157-----
158
Christian Heimes6f341092008-04-18 23:13:07 +0000159- Added implementation of copysign, acosh, asinh, atanh and log1p
160 to the new files Include/pymath.h and Python/pymath.h for
161 platforms which provide the functions through their libm. The
162 files also contains several helpers and constants for math.
163
Benjamin Petersona692c4d2008-04-27 02:28:02 +0000164- Added a new convenience function, PyErr_WarnPy3k, for issuing Py3k
165 warnings.

Barry Warsaw52973612008-03-01 02:23:38 +0000398 644. The mode is now inherited from the py file.
Christian Heimes40346852008-02-23 17:52:07 +0000399
Georg Brandlad61bc82008-02-23 15:11:18 +0000400- Issue #2067: file.__exit__() now calls subclasses' close() method.
401
402- Patch #1759: Backport of PEP 3129 class decorators.
Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +0000403
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000404- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +0000405 issue 215555 for a discussion.
406
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +0000407- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
408 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
409 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
410 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
411 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
412 module is:
413 from future_builtins import hex, oct
414
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +0000415- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
416 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
417 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
418 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
419 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
420 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
421
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +0000422- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
423 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
424 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and

437
Andrew M. Kuchlingc6511a82008-03-04 01:48:26 +0000438- Clear all free lists during a gc.collect() of the highest generation in order
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +0000439 to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back memory to the
440 OS earlier.

444
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +0000445- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
446 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
447
Christian Heimes6075a822008-02-06 12:44:34 +0000448- Limit free list of method and builtin function objects to 256 entries

471 same object as the func_code attribute of the function that produced the
472 generator.
473
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +0000474- Issue #1920: "while 0" statements were completely removed by the compiler,
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000475 even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is supposed to be run when
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +0000476 the condition is false. Now the compiler correctly emits bytecode for the
477 "else" suite.

2006-----
2007
Christian Heimes5b970ad2008-02-06 13:33:44 +00002008- Unified naming convention for free lists and their limits. All free lists
2009 in Object/ are named ``free_list``, the counter ``numfree`` and the upper
2010 limit is a macro ``PyName_MAXFREELIST`` inside an #ifndef block.
2011
Amaury Forgeot d'Arccab3d982008-02-03 22:51:43 +00002012- ``PySet_Add()`` can now modify a newly created frozenset. Similarly to
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00002013 ``PyTuple_SetItem``, it can be used to populate a brand new frozenset; but
Amaury Forgeot d'Arccab3d982008-02-03 22:51:43 +00002014 it does not steal a reference to the added item.
2015
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00002016- Added ``PySet_Check()`` and ``PyFrozenSet_Check()`` to the set API.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arccab3d982008-02-03 22:51:43 +00002017
Georg Brandl6caad7d2008-01-26 14:19:22 +00002018- Backport of PyUnicode_FromString(), _FromStringAndSize(), _Format and
2019 _FormatV from Python 3.0. Made PyLong_AsSsize_t and PyLong_FromSsize_t
2020 public functions.
2021
2022- Patch #1720595: add T_BOOL to the range of structmember types.
2023
2024- Issue #1534: Added ``PyFloat_GetMax()``, ``PyFloat_GetMin()`` and
2025 ``PyFloat_GetInfo()`` to the float API.
2026
2027- Issue #1521: On 64bit platforms, using PyArgs_ParseTuple with the t# of w#
2028 format code incorrectly truncated the length to an int, even when
2029 PY_SSIZE_T_CLEAN is set. The str.decode method used to return incorrect
2030 results with huge strings.
2031
2032- Issue #1629: Renamed Py_Size, Py_Type and Py_Refcnt to Py_SIZE, Py_TYPE
2033 and Py_REFCNT.
2034
2035- PEP 3123: Provide forward compatibility with Python 3.0, while keeping
2036 backwards compatibility. Add Py_Refcnt, Py_Type, Py_Size, and
2037 PyVarObject_HEAD_INIT.
2038
2039- Py_ssize_t fields work in structmember when HAVE_LONG_LONG is not defined.
2040
2041- Patch #1733960: Allow T_LONGLONG to accept ints.
2042
2043- T_PYSSIZET can now be used in PyMemberDef lists for Py_ssize_t members.
2044
Christian Heimes000a0742008-01-03 22:16:32 +00002045- Added a new API function ``PyImport_ImportModuleNoBlock``.
2046
Georg Brandl6caad7d2008-01-26 14:19:22 +00002047- Bug #1637022: Prefix AST symbols with _Py_.
2048
2049- Fix some leftovers from the conversion from int to Py_ssize_t
2050 (relevant to strings and sequences of more than 2**31 items).
2051
2052- Make _PyGILState_NoteThreadState() static, it was not used anywhere
2053 outside of pystate.c and should not be necessary.
2054
Christian Heimes000a0742008-01-03 22:16:32 +00002055- ``PyImport_Import`` and ``PyImport_ImportModule`` now always do absolute
2056 imports. In earlier versions they might have used relative imports under
2057 some conditions.
2058
Andrew M. Kuchlingadc60ab2008-01-04 02:26:00 +00002059- Added case insensitive comparison methods ``PyOS_stricmp(char*, char*)``
Christian Heimes000a0742008-01-03 22:16:32 +00002060 and ``PyOS_strnicmp(char*, char*, Py_ssize_t)``.
2061

Christian Heimes95d64472008-02-09 19:55:22 +00002070 Windows 2000 or greater. The _WINVER and NTDDI_VERSION macros are set to
2071 Win2k for x86/32bit builds and WinXP for AMD64 builds.
2072

2085
Brett Cannon5e263512007-05-20 23:17:38 +00002086- Removed the macfs module. It had been deprecated since Python 2.5. This
2087 lead to the deprecation of macostools.touched() as it relied solely on macfs
2088 and was a no-op under OS X.
