90-----------------
91
Martin v. Löwis9fa5a282008-09-11 06:53:30 +000092- Issue #3642: Suppress warning in obmalloc when size_t is larger than uint.
93
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +000094- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
95 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
96 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
97 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
98 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
99 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
100 64bit values.
101
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +0000102- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on
103 error.
104
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd3ffb892008-09-09 07:24:30 +0000105- Issue #3777: long() applied to a float object now always return a long
106 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
107 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
108 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
109
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +0000110- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
111 a unicode argument.
112
Benjamin Peterson17f03ca2008-09-01 14:18:30 +0000113- Issue #3683: Fix compilation when --without-threads is given.
114
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +0000115- Issue #3668: Fix a memory leak with the "s*" argument parser in
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000116 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +0000117 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
118
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000119- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +0000120 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
121 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
122 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
123 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
124 type object.
125
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +0000126- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.
127
128- Fix memory leaks found with valgrind and update suppressions file.
129
130- Fix compiler warnings in opt mode which would lead to invalid memory reads.
131
132- Fix problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker.
133
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +0000134- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
135 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
136
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +0000137- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
138 ``__delslice__``.
139
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +0000140- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared
141 library targets in the Makefile.
142
Gregory P. Smith980b99b2008-09-07 05:15:18 +0000143- Issue #1204: The configure script now tests for additional libraries
144 that may be required when linking against readline. This fixes issues
145 with x86_64 builds on some platforms (a few Linux flavors and OpenBSD).
146

154
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc24cb3822008-09-11 20:56:13 +0000155- Issue #3640: Pickling a list or a dict uses less local variables, to reduce
156 stack usage in the case of deeply nested objects.

161
Nick Coghland2e09382008-09-11 12:11:06 +0000162- Issue #3781: Further warnings.catch_warnings() cleanup to prevent
163 silent misbehaviour when a single instance is nested in multiple
164 with statements, or when the methods are invoked in the wrong order.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000264
265Core and Builtins
266-----------------
267
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000268- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
269 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
270 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
271 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
272 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
273 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
274 default.
275
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000276- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
277 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
278
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000279- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
280 value again.
281
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000282- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
283 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
284 and introducing s*.
285
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000286- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
287 object was stored in the freelist.
288
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000289- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
290 ValueError consistently across platforms.
291
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000292- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
293 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
294 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
295
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000296- Apply security patches from Apple.
297
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000298- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
299 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
300
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000301- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
302 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
303
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000304- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
305 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
306 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
307
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000308- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
309 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
310 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
311 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
312 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
313 failed have been fixed.
314
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000315Library
316-------
317

322
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000323- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
324 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
325 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
326
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000327- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
328 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
329 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
330 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
331 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
332 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
333
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000334- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things

357
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000358- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
359 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
360 regular expression.
361
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000362- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now

Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +0000365- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
366 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
367 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.

375 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
376
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000377- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
378 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
379
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000380- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
381 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
382 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
383
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +0000384- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that

428
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +0000429- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a
430 file name rather than a ZipInfo instance, so files are extracted with
431 mode 0600 rather than 000 under Unix.
432

Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000459Core and Builtins
460-----------------
461
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000462- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
463 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
464 an integer using operator.index().
465
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000466- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
467 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
468
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000469- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
470 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
471
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000472- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
473 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
474 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
475
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000476- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
477 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
478 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
479 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
480 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
481 level.
482
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000483- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
484 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
485 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
486 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
487 all imports from that module to fail.
488
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000489- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
490 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
491 new-style classes.
492
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000493- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
494 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
495 another file in sys.stdout.
496
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000497- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
498 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
499 another thread's dictionary.
500
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000501- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
502 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
503 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
504 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
505 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
506 10, -1).
507
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000508- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
509 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
510 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000511
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000512- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
513 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
514 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().

520 api functions without holding the GIL, which could lead to a fatal
521 error when they failed.
522
Martin v. Löwisaabf4042008-08-02 07:20:25 +0000523- Issue #799428: Fix Tkinter.Misc._nametowidget to unwrap Tcl command objects.

Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000531- Issue #3125: Remove copy_reg in multiprocessing and replace it with
532 ForkingPickler.register() to resolve conflict with ctypes.
533
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000534- Issue #3090: Fixed ARCHFLAGS parsing on OS/X
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000535
Thomas Heller880f5292008-07-15 19:39:38 +0000536- Issue #3313: Fixed a crash when a failed dlopen() call does not set

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000548- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
549 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000550 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000551 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
552 merged into trunk.
553
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +0000554- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().

Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000565 when completed.
Facundo Batista66c52772008-07-02 16:52:55 +0000566
Nick Coghlanc060b0e2008-07-02 13:09:19 +0000567- Issue #3190: Pydoc now hides the automatic module attribute __package__ (the
568 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
569
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000570- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001022- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
1023 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
1024 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
1025 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001092- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1093 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1094 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1095 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1096 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1097 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1098 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1099 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1100 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1101 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1102 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1103 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1104 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1105 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1106 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1107 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1108 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1109 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1110 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1111 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1112
1113 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1114 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1115 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1116 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1117 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1118 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1119 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1120 access to the underlying socket used.
1121
1122 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1123 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1124 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001125
1126 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001127 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,

1130
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001131 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test

1410
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001411- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1412 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1413 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1414 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1415 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1416 module is:
1417 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1418
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001419- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1420 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1421 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1422 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1423 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1424 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1425
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001426- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1427 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1428 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1429 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1430 PyObject_Format().
1431
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001432- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1433 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
