19------------------
20
Gregory P. Smith671c5d92008-04-09 18:18:43 +000021- zlib.decompressobj().flush(value) no longer crashes the interpreter when
22 passed a value less than or equal to zero.
23
Brett Cannone9746892008-04-12 23:44:07 +000024- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the original Python
25 code has been kept as backup). This will allow for using the 'warning's
26 machinery in such places as the parser where use of pure Python code is not
27 possible.

31
Skip Montanarob131f042008-04-18 20:35:46 +000032- Issue #2014: Allow XML-RPC datetime objects to have dates before
33 1900-01-01.
34
Nick Coghlan106fc482008-04-15 10:25:31 +000035- Issue #2439: Added new function pkgutil.get_data(), which is a
36 convenience wrapper for the PEP 302 get_data() API.
37
Thomas Heller046e6a42008-04-14 16:10:07 +000038- Issue #2616: The ctypes.pointer() and ctypes.POINTER() functions are
39 now implemented in C for better performance.
40
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc02f33b42008-04-08 23:10:07 +000041- Issue #2408: The ``_types`` module, which was used as in implementation
42 detail of the public ``types`` module, has been removed and replaced by pure
43 python code.
44
Mark Hammond495cf992008-04-07 01:53:39 +000045- Issue #2513: distutils on Windows is now capable of cross-compiling
46 extension modules between 32 and 64 bit platforms. See the distutls
47 build documentation for more information.
48
Gregory P. Smithaa63d0d2008-04-06 23:11:17 +000049- Issue #815646: Individual file objects may now be used from multiple
50 threads at once without fear of crashing the Python interpreter. If
51 file.close() is called while an object is in use by another thread
52 an IOError exception will be raised and the file will not be closed.
53
Thomas Hellerf7906482008-04-04 19:43:25 +000054- The bundled libffi copy is now in sync with the recently released
55 libffi3.0.5 version, apart from some small changes to
56 Modules/_ctypes/libffi/configure.ac.
57
Fred Drake46c58c12008-04-04 05:41:30 +000058- Issue #2385: distutils.core.run_script() makes __file__ available, so the
59 controlled environment will more closely mirror the typical script
60 environment. This supports setup.py scripts that refer to data files.
61
Barry Warsawba437742008-04-04 01:34:41 +000062Tests
63-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +000064- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining ports
65 to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an effort to
66 facilitate running multiple instances of the entire regression test suite
67 in parallel without issue. test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such
68 that it will always return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case
69 with the previous implementation, especially if socket options had been
70 set that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
71 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception if it
72 is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the SO_REUSEADDR or
73 SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if available, bind_port()
74 will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on the socket it's been passed.
75 This currently only applies to Windows. This option prevents any other
76 sockets from binding to the host/port we've bound to, thus removing the
77 possibility of the 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it,
78 that occurs when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a
79 host/port that's already been bound by another socket. The optional
80 preferred port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
81 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
82
83 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will pass
84 a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an unused port.
85 The temporary socket object is then closed and deleted, and the port is
86 returned. This method should only be used for obtaining an unused port
87 in order to pass to an external program (i.e. the -accept [port] argument
88 to openssl's s_server mode) or as a parameter to a server-oriented class
89 that doesn't give you direct access to the underlying socket used.
90
91 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used for
92 the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and connect).
93
94 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
95 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
96 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
97 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
98
99 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test suite to
100 run in parallel without issue.

338Core and builtins
339-----------------
340
Fred Drakea8ee94b2008-03-01 02:45:07 +0000341- Issue #2051: pyc and pyo files are no longer created with permission
Barry Warsaw52973612008-03-01 02:23:38 +0000342 644. The mode is now inherited from the py file.
Christian Heimes40346852008-02-23 17:52:07 +0000343
Georg Brandlad61bc82008-02-23 15:11:18 +0000344- Issue #2067: file.__exit__() now calls subclasses' close() method.
345
346- Patch #1759: Backport of PEP 3129 class decorators.
Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +0000347
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000348- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +0000349 issue 215555 for a discussion.
350
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +0000351- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
352 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
353 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
354 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
355 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
356 module is:
357 from future_builtins import hex, oct
358
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +0000359- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
360 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
361 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
362 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
363 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
364 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
365
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +0000366- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
367 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
368 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
369 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
370 PyObject_Format().
371
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +0000372- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted __del__
373 methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent state.
374
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000375- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also
376 prevent a possible crash: an Abstract Base Class would try to access a slot
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc60d6c7f2008-02-15 21:22:45 +0000377 on a registered virtual subclass.
378
Christian Heimes2f0da532008-02-15 06:57:08 +0000379- Fixed repr() and str() of complex numbers with infinity or nan as real or
380 imaginary part.
381
Andrew M. Kuchlingc6511a82008-03-04 01:48:26 +0000382- Clear all free lists during a gc.collect() of the highest generation in order
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +0000383 to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back memory to the
384 OS earlier.
385
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcb01aa432008-02-08 00:56:02 +0000386- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a subclass of
387 collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set to a bound method.
388
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +0000389- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
390 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
391
Christian Heimes6075a822008-02-06 12:44:34 +0000392- Limit free list of method and builtin function objects to 256 entries
393 each.
394
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc578a8ca2008-02-04 20:53:14 +0000395- Patch #1953: Added ``sys._compact_freelists()`` and the C API functions
396 ``PyInt_CompactFreeList`` and ``PyFloat_CompactFreeList``

398
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +0000399- Bug #1983: Fixed return type of fork(), fork1() and forkpty() calls.
400 Python expected the return type int but the fork familie returns pi_t.
401
Mark Dickinson105be772008-01-31 22:17:37 +0000402- Issue #1678380: Fix a bug that identifies 0j and -0j when they appear
403 in the same code unit.

Christian Heimes908caac2008-01-27 23:34:59 +0000412 internal lookup cache for ref leak tests.
413
Georg Brandl0cdf9a32008-01-26 14:14:20 +0000414- Patch #1473257: generator objects gain a gi_code attribute. This is the
415 same object as the func_code attribute of the function that produced the
416 generator.
417
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +0000418- Issue #1920: "while 0" statements were completely removed by the compiler,
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000419 even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is supposed to be run when
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +0000420 the condition is false. Now the compiler correctly emits bytecode for the
421 "else" suite.
422
Guido van Rossumeead05f2008-01-24 18:21:02 +0000423- A few crashers fixed: weakref_in_del.py (issue #1377858);

Christian Heimesb2302ba2008-01-23 17:15:06 +0000428 suppressed while an extension is loaded by calling SetErrorMode in
429 dynload_win.c. The error is still reported properly.
430
Christian Heimes082c9b02008-01-23 14:20:50 +0000431- Bug #1915: Python compiles with --enable-unicode=no again. However

453 resulting in speedups in heavily object-oriented code.
454
Neal Norwitz3fc15b82008-01-10 05:42:58 +0000455- Bug #1776: __import__() no longer accepts filenames on any platform.
456 The first parameter to __import__() must be a valid module name.
Christian Heimes3403f152008-01-09 19:56:33 +0000457
Georg Brandlaed6c662008-01-07 17:25:53 +0000458- Patch #1668: renamed THREADDEBUG envvar to PYTHONTHREADDEBUG.
459

521
Raymond Hettinger8f669372007-10-03 21:18:11 +0000522- The enumerate() builtin function is no longer bounded to sequences smaller
523 than LONG_MAX. Formerly, it raised an OverflowError. Now, automatically
524 shifts from ints to longs.
525
Brett Cannon0b14f242007-09-30 19:45:10 +0000526- Issue #1686386: Tuple's tp_repr did not take into account the possibility of
527 having a self-referential tuple, which is possible from C code. Nor did
528 object's tp_str consider that a type's tp_str could do something that could
529 lead to an inifinite recursion. Py_ReprEnter() and Py_EnterRecursiveCall(),
530 respectively, fixed the issues.
531
Brett Cannon01531592007-09-17 03:28:34 +0000532- Issue #1164: It was possible to trigger deadlock when using the 'print'
533 statement to write to a file since the GIL was not released as needed. Now
534 PyObject_Print() does the right thing along with various tp_print
535 implementations of the built-in types and those in the collections module.
536
Brett Cannon4c20bc42007-09-11 21:02:28 +0000537- Issue #1147: Exceptions were directly allowing string exceptions in their

541 list by using the recursion counter.
542
Brett Cannon1e534b52007-09-07 04:18:30 +0000543- Issue #1202533: Fix infinite recursion calls triggered by calls to
544 PyObject_Call() never calling back out to Python code to trigger recursion
545 depth updates/checks. Required the creation of a static RuntimeError
546 instance in case normalizing an exception put the recursion check value past
547 its limit. Fixes crashers infinite_rec_(1|2|4|5).py.
548
Martin v. Löwisa5136192007-09-04 14:19:28 +0000549- Patch #1031213: Decode source line in SyntaxErrors back to its original source

Georg Brandla5ea6892007-06-01 11:33:33 +0000561
Neal Norwitz0ac60192007-05-27 04:08:54 +0000562- Add new attribute names for function objects. All the func_* become
563 __*__ attributes. (Some already existed, e.g., __doc__ and __name__.)
564
Neal Norwitz8b2bfbc2007-05-23 06:35:32 +0000565- Add -3 option to the interpreter to warn about features that are
566 deprecated and will be changed/removed in Python 3.0.

Collin Winter62903052007-05-18 23:11:24 +0000571- except clauses may now be spelled either "except E, target:" or
572 "except E as target:". This is to provide forwards compatibility with
573 Python 3.0.
574
Brett Cannon229cee22007-05-05 01:34:02 +0000575- Deprecate BaseException.message as per PEP 352.
576

578 inherited from a builtin base.
579
Vinay Sajip8549ce32007-05-06 17:53:37 +0000580- When __slots__ are set to a unicode string, make it work the same as
Neal Norwitzcbd9ee62007-04-14 05:25:50 +0000581 setting a plain string, ie don't expand to single letter identifiers.
582
Raymond Hettinger13936692007-04-11 18:40:58 +0000583- Request #1191699: Slices can now be pickled.

591
Neal Norwitzaa754b72007-03-21 06:39:48 +0000592- Remove unused file Python/fmod.c.
593
Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +0000594- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
595 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
596 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the
597 other one is. For backwards compatibility, when both are
598 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +0000599 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
600 as supported by type.__new__().
Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +0000601
Georg Brandl2b869942007-03-17 16:08:45 +0000602- Patch #1675423: PyComplex_AsCComplex() now tries to convert an object
603 to complex using its __complex__() method before falling back to the
604 __float__() method. Therefore, the functions in the cmath module now
