10*Release date: XX-XXX-2008*
11
12Core and Builtins
13-----------------
14
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +000015- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
16 a unicode argument.
17
Benjamin Peterson17f03ca2008-09-01 14:18:30 +000018- Issue #3683: Fix compilation when --without-threads is given.
19
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000020- Issue #3668: Fix a memory leak with the "s*" argument parser in
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000021 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000022 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
23
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000024- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +000025 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
26 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
27 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
28 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
29 type object.
30
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +000031- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.
32
33- Fix memory leaks found with valgrind and update suppressions file.
34
35- Fix compiler warnings in opt mode which would lead to invalid memory reads.
36
37- Fix problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker.
38
Christian Heimesfb1813c2008-08-22 19:34:15 +000039- Issue #3642: Changed type of numarenas from uint to size_t
40 in order to silence a compilier warning on 64bit OSes.
41
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +000042- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
43 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
44
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +000045- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
46 ``__delslice__``.
47
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +000048- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared
49 library targets in the Makefile.
50
Benjamin Peterson14cb6bc2008-08-26 17:08:40 +000051C-API
52-----
53
54- Aliased PyObject_Bytes to PyObject_Str.
55
Barry Warsaw6a0b5592008-08-21 02:12:56 +000056Library

60 non-ascii characters and Unicode in setup.py meta-data.
61
62- Issue #3726: Allow spaces in separators in logging configuration files.
Vinay Sajip6a2fd812008-09-03 09:20:05 +000063
Marc-André Lemburg31a0a142008-09-02 12:11:19 +000064- Issue #3719: platform.architecture() fails if there are spaces in the
65 path to the Python binary.
66
Brett Cannon1eaf0742008-09-02 01:25:16 +000067- Issue 3602: Moved test.test_support.catch_warning() to
68 warnings.catch_warnings() along with some API cleanup. Expanding the tests
69 for catch_warnings() also led to an improvement in the raising of a
70 DeprecationWarning related to warnings.warn_explicit().
71
Benjamin Peterson973e6c22008-09-01 23:12:58 +000072- The deprecation warnings for the old camelCase threading API were removed.

81 directory.
Benjamin Petersonf22c26e2008-09-01 14:13:43 +000082
Gregory P. Smithd7122032008-09-02 05:36:11 +000083- Issue #3708: os.urandom no longer goes into an infinite loop when passed a
84 non-integer floating point number.
85

87-----------------
88
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc293924b2008-09-02 23:19:56 +000089- Issue #2975: When compiling several extension modules with Visual Studio 2008
90 from the same python interpreter, some environment variables would grow
91 without limit.
92
Benjamin Peterson37346b22008-08-23 20:27:43 +000093- Issue #3643: Added a few more checks to _testcapi to prevent segfaults by

Barry Warsaw07a4a382008-08-21 01:15:08 +0000100*Release date: 20-Aug-2008*
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000101
102Core and Builtins
103-----------------
104
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000105- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
106 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
107 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
108 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
109 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
110 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
111 default.
112
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000113- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
114 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
115
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000116- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
117 value again.
118
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000119- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
120 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
121 and introducing s*.
122
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000123- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
124 object was stored in the freelist.
125
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000126- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
127 ValueError consistently across platforms.
128
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000129- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
130 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
131 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
132
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000133- Apply security patches from Apple.
134
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000135- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
136 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
137
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000138- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
139 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
140
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000141- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
142 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
143 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
144
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000145- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
146 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
147 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
148 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
149 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
150 failed have been fixed.
151
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000152Library
153-------
154
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000155- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
156
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000157- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
158 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
159
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000160- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
161 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
162 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
163
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000164- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
165 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
166 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
167 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
168 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
169 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
170
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000171- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
172 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
173
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000174- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
175
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000176- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
177
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000178- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
179
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000180- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
181 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
182
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000183- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
184 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
185
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000186- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
187 in a redirect.
188
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000189- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +0000190 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000191
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +0000192- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
193 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
194
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000195- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
196 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
197 regular expression.
198
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000199- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
200 thread-safe.
201
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +0000202- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
203 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
204 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
205
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +0000206- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
207
Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +0000208- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
209 menu entries were not deleted.
210
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +0000211- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
212 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
213
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000214- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
215 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
216
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000217- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
218 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
219 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
220
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +0000221- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
222 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
223 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
224
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +0000225- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
226 the reload() built-in has been removed.
227
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000228- Changed code in the following modules/packages to remove warnings raised
Brett Cannonc1b76e42008-08-09 23:06:16 +0000229 while running under the ``-3`` flag: aifc, asynchat, asyncore, bdb, bsddb,
Brett Cannon047e4a92008-08-17 04:16:04 +0000230 ConfigParser, cookielib, csv, difflib, distutils, DocXMLRPCServer, email,
231 filecmp, fileinput, inspect, logging, modulefinder, pdb, pickle, profile,
232 pstats, pydoc, re, rlcompleter, SimpleXMLRPCServer, shelve, socket,
233 subprocess, sqlite3, tarfile, Tkinter, test.test_support, textwrap,
234 threading, tokenize, traceback, urlparse, wsgiref, xml, xmlrpclib.
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000235
Lars Gustäbel727bd0b2008-08-02 11:26:39 +0000236- Issue #3039: Fix tarfile.TarFileCompat.writestr() which always
237 raised an AttributeError.
238
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000239- Issue #2523: Fix quadratic behaviour when read()ing a binary file without
Antoine Pitroude781a42008-08-09 12:43:23 +0000240 asking for a specific length. This problem only affected files opened
241 using the new "io" module, not the built-in open() function.
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000242

256 invalid arguments.
257
258- Issue #3302: Fix several crashes when calling locale's gettext functions
259 with None arguments.
260
261- Issue #3389: Allow resolving dotted names for handlers in logging
262 configuration files.
263
264- Deprecate the sunaudio module for removal in Python 3.0.
265
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +0000266- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a
267 file name rather than a ZipInfo instance, so files are extracted with
268 mode 0600 rather than 000 under Unix.
269
Gregory P. Smitha36f8fe2008-08-04 00:13:29 +0000270- Issue #1857: subprocess.Popen.poll gained an additional _deadstate keyword

272 own poll method. Fixed my moving _deadstate to an _internal_poll method.
273
Martin v. Löwis8dbf3642008-08-01 14:10:26 +0000274Build

280-------------
281
Nick Coghlan6e8fef02008-08-18 13:14:22 +0000282- Issue #2235: the C API function PyObject_HashNotImplemented and its
283 interaction with the tp_hash slot (added in 2.6b2) are now documented
284
Nick Coghlan2a0c2b12008-08-04 12:47:17 +0000285- Issue #643841: The language reference now provides more detailed
286 coverage of the lookup process for special methods. The disclaimers
287 regarding lack of coverage of new-style classes have also been
288 removed, since the coverage is now fairly reasonable.

293
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000294*Release date: 17-Jul-2008*
295
Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000296Core and Builtins
297-----------------
298
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000299- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
300 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
301 an integer using operator.index().
302
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000303- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
304 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
305
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000306- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
307 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
308
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000309- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
310 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
311 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
312
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000313- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
314 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
315 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
316 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
317 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C

Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000320- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
321 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
322 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will

Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000338- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
339 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
340 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
341 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
342 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
343 10, -1).

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000859- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
860 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
861 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
862 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
863 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
864 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
865 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000929- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
930 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
931 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
932 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
933 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
934 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
935 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
936 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
937 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
938 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
939 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
940 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
941 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
942 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
943 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
944 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
945 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
946 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
947 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
948 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
949
950 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
951 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
952 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
953 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
954 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
955 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
956 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
957 access to the underlying socket used.
958
959 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
960 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
961 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000962
963 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000964 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,

966 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
967
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000968 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
969 suite to run in parallel without issue.

1247
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001248- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1249 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1250 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1251 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1252 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1253 module is:
1254 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1255
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001256- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1257 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1258 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1259 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1260 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1261 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1262
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001263- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1264 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1265 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1266 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1267 PyObject_Format().
1268
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001269- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1270 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1271 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +00001272
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001273- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also

1281 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1282 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001283
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001284- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
1285 subclass of collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set
1286 to a bound method.

1300 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +00001301

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001314- Patch #1473257: generator objects gain a gi_code attribute. This is
1315 the same object as the func_code attribute of the function that
1316 produced the generator.
Georg Brandl0cdf9a32008-01-26 14:14:20 +00001317
