24-----------------
Barry Warsawba437742008-04-04 01:34:41 +000025
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc96865852008-04-22 21:14:41 +000026- Issue #2670: Fix a failure in urllib2.build_opener(), when passed two
27 handlers that derive the same default base class.
28

38 passed a value less than or equal to zero.
39
Brett Cannone9746892008-04-12 23:44:07 +000040- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the original Python
41 code has been kept as backup). This will allow for using the 'warning's
42 machinery in such places as the parser where use of pure Python code is not
Brett Cannonb457dda2008-05-02 02:25:09 +000043 possible. Both the ``showarning()`` and ``formatwarning()`` gain an
44 optional 'line' argument which is not called by default for
45 backwards-compatibility reasons.
Brett Cannone9746892008-04-12 23:44:07 +000046
Barry Warsawba437742008-04-04 01:34:41 +000047Library

55 data types
56
Neal Norwitz2b0bea52008-04-25 03:40:17 +000057- Issue #2682: ctypes callback functions no longer contain a cyclic
Thomas Hellerbf027c42008-04-24 18:14:19 +000058 reference to themselves.
59
Gregory P. Smithd59fefb2008-04-22 08:11:33 +000060- The getpass module has been improved on Unix. It now uses /dev/tty
61 by default and uses stderr instead of stdout. A GetPassWarning is
62 issued when input echo cannot be controlled.

74 detail of the public ``types`` module, has been removed and replaced by pure
75 python code.
76
Mark Hammond495cf992008-04-07 01:53:39 +000077- Issue #2513: distutils on Windows is now capable of cross-compiling
78 extension modules between 32 and 64 bit platforms. See the distutls
79 build documentation for more information.
80
Gregory P. Smithaa63d0d2008-04-06 23:11:17 +000081- Issue #815646: Individual file objects may now be used from multiple
82 threads at once without fear of crashing the Python interpreter. If
83 file.close() is called while an object is in use by another thread
84 an IOError exception will be raised and the file will not be closed.
85
Thomas Hellerf7906482008-04-04 19:43:25 +000086- The bundled libffi copy is now in sync with the recently released
87 libffi3.0.5 version, apart from some small changes to
88 Modules/_ctypes/libffi/configure.ac.
89
Fred Drake46c58c12008-04-04 05:41:30 +000090- Issue #2385: distutils.core.run_script() makes __file__ available, so the
91 controlled environment will more closely mirror the typical script
92 environment. This supports setup.py scripts that refer to data files.
93
Barry Warsawba437742008-04-04 01:34:41 +000094Tests
95-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +000096- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining ports
97 to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an effort to
98 facilitate running multiple instances of the entire regression test suite
99 in parallel without issue. test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such
100 that it will always return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case
101 with the previous implementation, especially if socket options had been
102 set that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
103 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception if it
104 is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the SO_REUSEADDR or
105 SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if available, bind_port()
106 will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on the socket it's been passed.
107 This currently only applies to Windows. This option prevents any other
108 sockets from binding to the host/port we've bound to, thus removing the
109 possibility of the 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it,
110 that occurs when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a
111 host/port that's already been bound by another socket. The optional
112 preferred port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
113 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
114
115 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will pass
116 a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an unused port.
117 The temporary socket object is then closed and deleted, and the port is
118 returned. This method should only be used for obtaining an unused port
119 in order to pass to an external program (i.e. the -accept [port] argument
120 to openssl's s_server mode) or as a parameter to a server-oriented class
121 that doesn't give you direct access to the underlying socket used.
122
123 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used for
124 the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and connect).
125
126 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
127 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
128 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
129 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
130
131 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test suite to
132 run in parallel without issue.

136
Mark Dickinson65134662008-04-25 16:11:04 +0000137- Issue #1496032: On alpha, use -mieee when gcc is the compiler.
138
Thomas Hellerdc96a772008-04-04 10:07:55 +0000139- Issue #2544: On HP-UX systems, use 'gcc -shared' for linking when
140 gcc is used as compiler.
141
Barry Warsawba437742008-04-04 01:34:41 +0000142C API
143-----
144
Christian Heimes6f341092008-04-18 23:13:07 +0000145- Added implementation of copysign, acosh, asinh, atanh and log1p
146 to the new files Include/pymath.h and Python/pymath.h for
147 platforms which provide the functions through their libm. The
148 files also contains several helpers and constants for math.
149
Benjamin Petersona692c4d2008-04-27 02:28:02 +0000150- Added a new convenience function, PyErr_WarnPy3k, for issuing Py3k
151 warnings.

382
Fred Drakea8ee94b2008-03-01 02:45:07 +0000383- Issue #2051: pyc and pyo files are no longer created with permission
Barry Warsaw52973612008-03-01 02:23:38 +0000384 644. The mode is now inherited from the py file.
Christian Heimes40346852008-02-23 17:52:07 +0000385
Georg Brandlad61bc82008-02-23 15:11:18 +0000386- Issue #2067: file.__exit__() now calls subclasses' close() method.
387
388- Patch #1759: Backport of PEP 3129 class decorators.
Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +0000389

392
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +0000393- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
394 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
395 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
396 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
397 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
398 module is:
399 from future_builtins import hex, oct
400
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +0000401- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
402 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
403 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
404 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
405 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
406 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
407
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +0000408- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
409 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
410 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
411 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
412 PyObject_Format().

423
Andrew M. Kuchlingc6511a82008-03-04 01:48:26 +0000424- Clear all free lists during a gc.collect() of the highest generation in order
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +0000425 to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back memory to the
426 OS earlier.

430
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +0000431- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
432 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
433
Christian Heimes6075a822008-02-06 12:44:34 +0000434- Limit free list of method and builtin function objects to 256 entries

455
Georg Brandl0cdf9a32008-01-26 14:14:20 +0000456- Patch #1473257: generator objects gain a gi_code attribute. This is the
457 same object as the func_code attribute of the function that produced the
458 generator.
459
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +0000460- Issue #1920: "while 0" statements were completely removed by the compiler,
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000461 even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is supposed to be run when
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +0000462 the condition is false. Now the compiler correctly emits bytecode for the
463 "else" suite.

586 PyObject_Call() never calling back out to Python code to trigger recursion
587 depth updates/checks. Required the creation of a static RuntimeError
588 instance in case normalizing an exception put the recursion check value past
589 its limit. Fixes crashers infinite_rec_(1|2|4|5).py.

Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +0000636- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
637 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
638 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the

Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +0000641 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
642 as supported by type.__new__().
Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +0000643

Christian Heimes5b970ad2008-02-06 13:33:44 +00001994- Unified naming convention for free lists and their limits. All free lists
1995 in Object/ are named ``free_list``, the counter ``numfree`` and the upper
1996 limit is a macro ``PyName_MAXFREELIST`` inside an #ifndef block.
1997
Amaury Forgeot d'Arccab3d982008-02-03 22:51:43 +00001998- ``PySet_Add()`` can now modify a newly created frozenset. Similarly to
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001999 ``PyTuple_SetItem``, it can be used to populate a brand new frozenset; but
Amaury Forgeot d'Arccab3d982008-02-03 22:51:43 +00002000 it does not steal a reference to the added item.
2001
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00002002- Added ``PySet_Check()`` and ``PyFrozenSet_Check()`` to the set API.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arccab3d982008-02-03 22:51:43 +00002003
Georg Brandl6caad7d2008-01-26 14:19:22 +00002004- Backport of PyUnicode_FromString(), _FromStringAndSize(), _Format and
2005 _FormatV from Python 3.0. Made PyLong_AsSsize_t and PyLong_FromSsize_t
2006 public functions.
2007
2008- Patch #1720595: add T_BOOL to the range of structmember types.
2009
2010- Issue #1534: Added ``PyFloat_GetMax()``, ``PyFloat_GetMin()`` and
2011 ``PyFloat_GetInfo()`` to the float API.
2012
2013- Issue #1521: On 64bit platforms, using PyArgs_ParseTuple with the t# of w#
2014 format code incorrectly truncated the length to an int, even when
2015 PY_SSIZE_T_CLEAN is set. The str.decode method used to return incorrect
2016 results with huge strings.
2017
2018- Issue #1629: Renamed Py_Size, Py_Type and Py_Refcnt to Py_SIZE, Py_TYPE
2019 and Py_REFCNT.
2020
2021- PEP 3123: Provide forward compatibility with Python 3.0, while keeping
2022 backwards compatibility. Add Py_Refcnt, Py_Type, Py_Size, and
2023 PyVarObject_HEAD_INIT.
2024
2025- Py_ssize_t fields work in structmember when HAVE_LONG_LONG is not defined.
2026
2027- Patch #1733960: Allow T_LONGLONG to accept ints.
2028
2029- T_PYSSIZET can now be used in PyMemberDef lists for Py_ssize_t members.
2030
Christian Heimes000a0742008-01-03 22:16:32 +00002031- Added a new API function ``PyImport_ImportModuleNoBlock``.
2032
Georg Brandl6caad7d2008-01-26 14:19:22 +00002033- Bug #1637022: Prefix AST symbols with _Py_.
2034
2035- Fix some leftovers from the conversion from int to Py_ssize_t
2036 (relevant to strings and sequences of more than 2**31 items).
2037
2038- Make _PyGILState_NoteThreadState() static, it was not used anywhere
2039 outside of pystate.c and should not be necessary.
2040
Christian Heimes000a0742008-01-03 22:16:32 +00002041- ``PyImport_Import`` and ``PyImport_ImportModule`` now always do absolute
2042 imports. In earlier versions they might have used relative imports under
2043 some conditions.
2044
Andrew M. Kuchlingadc60ab2008-01-04 02:26:00 +00002045- Added case insensitive comparison methods ``PyOS_stricmp(char*, char*)``
Christian Heimes000a0742008-01-03 22:16:32 +00002046 and ``PyOS_strnicmp(char*, char*, Py_ssize_t)``.
2047
Neal Norwitz8a267062006-08-19 04:25:29 +00002048- Bug #1542693: remove semi-colon at end of PyImport_ImportModuleEx macro
2049 so it can be used as an expression.

Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00002055- Patch #1706: Drop support for Win9x, WinME and NT4. Python now requires
Christian Heimes95d64472008-02-09 19:55:22 +00002056 Windows 2000 or greater. The _WINVER and NTDDI_VERSION macros are set to
2057 Win2k for x86/32bit builds and WinXP for AMD64 builds.
2058
Martin v. Löwis2607e6c2006-11-21 18:20:25 +00002059- Conditionalize definition of _CRT_SECURE_NO_DEPRECATE

Brett Cannon791d56f2007-05-31 19:40:42 +00002070- buildtools now raises a DeprecationWarning.
2071
Brett Cannon5e263512007-05-20 23:17:38 +00002072- Removed the macfs module. It had been deprecated since Python 2.5. This
2073 lead to the deprecation of macostools.touched() as it relied solely on macfs
2074 and was a no-op under OS X.
