Anthony Baxterb4096662006-08-16 03:42:26 +0000312*Release date: 17-AUG-2006*
Neal Norwitzff4b63b2006-08-04 04:50:21 +0000313
314Core and builtins
315-----------------
316
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000317- Unicode objects will no longer raise an exception when being
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000318 compared equal or unequal to a string and a UnicodeDecodeError
319 exception occurs, e.g. as result of a decoding failure.
Neal Norwitz56423e52006-08-13 18:11:08 +0000320
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000321 Instead, the equal (==) and unequal (!=) comparison operators will
322 now issue a UnicodeWarning and interpret the two objects as
323 unequal. The UnicodeWarning can be filtered as desired using
324 the warning framework, e.g. silenced completely, turned into an
325 exception, logged, etc.
326
327 Note that compare operators other than equal and unequal will still
328 raise UnicodeDecodeError exceptions as they've always done.
Neal Norwitz8a87f5d2006-08-12 17:03:09 +0000329
Marc-André Lemburg757ea272006-08-14 11:44:34 +0000330- Fix segfault when doing string formatting on subclasses of long.
331
332- Fix bug related to __len__ functions using values > 2**32 on 64-bit machines
333 with new-style classes.
334
335- Fix bug related to __len__ functions returning negative values with
336 classic classes.
337
338- Patch #1538606, Fix __index__() clipping. There were some problems
339 discovered with the API and how integers that didn't fit into Py_ssize_t
340 were handled. This patch attempts to provide enough alternatives
341 to effectively use __index__.
342
Martin v. Löwisab2f8f72006-08-09 07:57:39 +0000343- Bug #1536021: __hash__ may now return long int; the final hash
344 value is obtained by invoking hash on the long int.
345
Thomas Hellerab1049c2006-08-08 17:37:00 +0000346- Bug #1536786: buffer comparison could emit a RuntimeWarning.
347
Georg Brandl7e3ba2a2006-08-06 08:23:54 +0000348- Bug #1535165: fixed a segfault in input() and raw_input() when
349 sys.stdin is closed.
350
Thomas Heller74d36f02006-08-04 18:17:40 +0000351- On Windows, the PyErr_Warn function is now exported from
352 the Python dll again.
353
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000354- Bug #1191458: tracing over for loops now produces a line event
355 on each iteration. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc
356 magic number. This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5c1
357 will be regenerated.
358
Neal Norwitz0cbd8052006-08-04 05:09:28 +0000359- Bug #1333982: string/number constants were inappropriately stored
360 in the byte code and co_consts even if they were not used, ie
361 immediately popped off the stack.
362
Georg Brandle9462c72006-08-04 18:03:37 +0000363- Fixed a reference-counting problem in property().
364
Neal Norwitzff4b63b2006-08-04 04:50:21 +0000365
366Library
367-------
368
Neil Schemenauer4c6b0d52006-08-16 23:38:05 +0000369- Fix a bug in the ``compiler`` package that caused invalid code to be
370 generated for generator expressions.
371
Marc-André Lemburg574cfea2006-08-16 16:11:01 +0000372- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0. The change to
373 keep it programmatically in sync with the Python version running
374 the code (introduced in 2.5b3) has been reverted. It will continue
375 to be maintained manually as static string literal.
376
Andrew M. Kuchlingc13324e2006-08-16 17:11:18 +0000377- If the Python part of a ctypes callback function returns None,
Thomas Hellerb4a0cf12006-08-16 15:10:12 +0000378 and this cannot be converted to the required C type, an exception is
379 printed with PyErr_WriteUnraisable. Before this change, the C
Andrew M. Kuchlingc13324e2006-08-16 17:11:18 +0000380 callback returned arbitrary values to the calling code.
Thomas Hellerb4a0cf12006-08-16 15:10:12 +0000381
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000382- The __repr__ method of a NULL ctypes.py_object() no longer raises
Thomas Hellerb0aa98f2006-08-16 14:07:44 +0000383 an exception.
384
Tim Petersc10c9d02006-09-05 02:18:09 +0000385- uuid.UUID now has a bytes_le attribute. This returns the UUID in
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000386 little-endian byte order for Windows. In addition, uuid.py gained some
Anthony Baxter58179592006-08-16 13:08:25 +0000387 workarounds for clocks with low resolution, to stop the code yielding
388 duplicate UUIDs.
389
Kurt B. Kaiserd112bc72006-08-16 05:01:42 +0000390- Patch #1540892: site.py Quitter() class attempts to close sys.stdin
391 before raising SystemExit, allowing IDLE to honor quit() and exit().
392
Neal Norwitzbf8c1952006-08-15 04:14:57 +0000393- Bug #1224621: make tabnanny recognize IndentationErrors raised by tokenize.
394
Georg Brandl7a1af772006-08-14 21:55:28 +0000395- Patch #1536071: trace.py should now find the full module name of a
396 file correctly even on Windows.
397
Georg Brandl0a7d1bb2006-08-11 07:26:10 +0000398- logging's atexit hook now runs even if the rest of the module has
399 already been cleaned up.
400
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000401- Bug #1112549, fix DoS attack on cgi.FieldStorage.
Guido van Rossum133f4e42006-08-10 17:42:50 +0000402
Neal Norwitzff4b63b2006-08-04 04:50:21 +0000403- Bug #1531405, format_exception no longer raises an exception if
404 str(exception) raised an exception.
405
Neil Schemenauer06ded092006-08-04 16:20:30 +0000406- Fix a bug in the ``compiler`` package that caused invalid code to be
407 generated for nested functions.
408
Neal Norwitzff4b63b2006-08-04 04:50:21 +0000409
410Extension Modules
411-----------------
412
Neal Norwitzbf8c1952006-08-15 04:14:57 +0000413- Patch #1511317: don't crash on invalid hostname (alias) info.
414
Georg Brandl3335a7a2006-08-14 21:42:55 +0000415- Patch #1535500: fix segfault in BZ2File.writelines and make sure it
416 raises the correct exceptions.
417
Thomas Heller1ce433e2006-08-14 16:20:04 +0000418- Patch # 1536908: enable building ctypes on OpenBSD/AMD64. The
419 '-no-stack-protector' compiler flag for OpenBSD has been removed.
420
Thomas Heller86720042006-08-14 11:17:48 +0000421- Patch #1532975 was applied, which fixes Bug #1533481: ctypes now
422 uses the _as_parameter_ attribute when objects are passed to foreign
423 function calls. The ctypes version number was changed to 1.0.1.
424
Bob Ippolitoe6c9f982006-08-04 23:59:21 +0000425- Bug #1530559, struct.pack raises TypeError where it used to convert.
426 Passing float arguments to struct.pack when integers are expected
427 now triggers a DeprecationWarning.
428
Neal Norwitzff4b63b2006-08-04 04:50:21 +0000429

Andrew MacIntyre16ee33a2006-08-06 12:37:03 +0000440- test_threading now skips testing alternate thread stack sizes on
441 platforms that don't support changing thread stack size.
442
Neal Norwitzff4b63b2006-08-04 04:50:21 +0000443

Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000476
477Core and builtins
478-----------------
479
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000480- _PyWeakref_GetWeakrefCount() now returns a Py_ssize_t; it previously
Neal Norwitzc5e060d2006-08-02 06:14:22 +0000481 returned a long (see PEP 353).
482
Neal Norwitzf71ec5a2006-07-30 06:57:04 +0000483- Bug #1515471: string.replace() accepts character buffers again.
484
Neal Norwitz07aadb12006-07-30 06:55:48 +0000485- Add PyErr_WarnEx() so C code can pass the stacklevel to warnings.warn().
486 This provides the proper warning for struct.pack().
487 PyErr_Warn() is now deprecated in favor of PyErr_WarnEx().
488
Neal Norwitz0d62a062006-07-30 06:53:31 +0000489- Patch #1531113: Fix augmented assignment with yield expressions.
490 Also fix a SystemError when trying to assign to yield expressions.
491
Phillip J. Ebyf7575d02006-07-28 21:12:07 +0000492- Bug #1529871: The speed enhancement patch #921466 broke Python's compliance
493 with PEP 302. This was fixed by adding an ``imp.NullImporter`` type that is
494 used in ``sys.path_importer_cache`` to cache non-directory paths and avoid
495 excessive filesystem operations during imports.
496
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +0000497- Bug #1521947: When checking for overflow, ``PyOS_strtol()`` used some
498 operations on signed longs that are formally undefined by C.
499 Unfortunately, at least one compiler now cares about that, so complicated
500 the code to make that compiler happy again.
501
Martin v. Löwis982e9fe2006-07-24 12:54:17 +0000502- Bug #1524310: Properly report errors from FindNextFile in os.listdir.

508
Neal Norwitze7563102006-07-17 01:00:16 +0000509- Fix warnings reported by Klocwork's static analysis tool.
510
Neal Norwitz84be93b2006-07-16 01:50:38 +0000511- Bug #1512814, Fix incorrect lineno's when code within a function
512 had more than 255 blank lines.
513
Georg Brandl9dceedb2006-07-12 15:31:17 +0000514- Patch #1521179: Python now accepts the standard options ``--help`` and
515 ``--version`` as well as ``/?`` on Windows.
516
Andrew M. Kuchling93c928e2006-07-26 17:19:39 +0000517- Bug #1520864: unpacking singleton tuples in a 'for' loop (for x, in) works
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000518 again. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc magic number.
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000519 This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5b3 will be regenerated.
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000520
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000521- Bug #1524317: Compiling Python ``--without-threads`` failed.
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000522 The Python core compiles again, and, in a build without threads, the
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000523 new ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dictionary with one entry,
524 mapping the faux "thread id" 0 to the current frame.
525
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +0000526- Bug #1525447: build on MacOS X on a case-sensitive filesystem.
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +0000527
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +0000528
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000529Library
530-------
531
Martin v. Löwis961b91b2006-08-02 13:53:55 +0000532- Correction of patch #1455898: In the mbcs decoder, set final=False
533 for stream decoder, but final=True for the decode function.
534
Georg Brandl07fec3a2006-08-01 18:49:24 +0000535- os.urandom no longer masks unrelated exceptions like SystemExit or
536 KeyboardInterrupt.
537
Tim Peters4643c2f2006-08-10 22:45:34 +0000538- Bug #1525866: Don't copy directory stat times in
Martin v. Löwis4e678382006-07-30 13:00:31 +0000539 shutil.copytree on Windows
540
Georg Brandle34ac7c2006-07-30 11:07:23 +0000541- Bug #1002398: The documentation for os.path.sameopenfile now correctly
542 refers to file descriptors, not file objects.
543
Tim Petersc10c9d02006-09-05 02:18:09 +0000544- The renaming of the xml package to xmlcore, and the import hackery done
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000545 to make it appear at both names, has been removed. Bug #1511497,
Fred Drakefbdeaad2006-07-29 16:56:15 +0000546 #1513611, and probably others.
547
Georg Brandledd9b0d2006-07-29 09:33:26 +0000548- Bug #1441397: The compiler module now recognizes module and function
549 docstrings correctly as it did in Python 2.4.
550
Tim Peters6f681472006-07-27 23:44:37 +0000551- Bug #1529297: The rewrite of doctest for Python 2.4 unintentionally
552 lost that tests are sorted by name before being run. This rarely
553 matters for well-written tests, but can create baffling symptoms if
554 side effects from one test to the next affect outcomes. ``DocTestFinder``
555 has been changed to sort the list of tests it returns.
556
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000557- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0, and is now kept
Martin v. Löwis1f30c372006-07-30 13:14:05 +0000558 in sync with sys.version_info[:3].
Martin v. Löwis997ceff2006-07-27 06:38:16 +0000559
Martin v. Löwis9298eff2006-07-26 12:12:56 +0000560- Bug #978833: Really close underlying socket in _socketobject.close.
561
Georg Brandl8c036cc2006-08-20 13:15:39 +0000562- Bug #1459963: urllib and urllib2 now normalize HTTP header names with
563 title().
Georg Brandl0619a322006-07-26 07:40:17 +0000564
Georg Brandlcf0c1722006-07-26 07:23:32 +0000565- Patch #1525766: In pkgutil.walk_packages, correctly pass the onerror callback
566 to recursive calls and call it with the failing package name.
567
Martin v. Löwis0b483032006-07-25 09:53:12 +0000568- Bug #1525817: Don't truncate short lines in IDLE's tool tips.
569
Georg Brandlc13c34c2006-07-24 14:09:56 +0000570- Patch #1515343: Fix printing of deprecated string exceptions with a
571 value in the traceback module.
572
Greg Ward48fae7a2006-07-23 16:05:51 +0000573- Resync optparse with Optik 1.5.3: minor tweaks for/to tests.
574
Martin v. Löwis426f4a12006-07-18 17:46:31 +0000575- Patch #1524429: Use repr() instead of backticks in Tkinter again.
576
Brett Cannoncaebe222006-07-18 04:41:36 +0000577- Bug #1520914: Change time.strftime() to accept a zero for any position in its
578 argument tuple. For arguments where zero is illegal, the value is forced to
579 the minimum value that is correct. This is to support an undocumented but
580 common way people used to fill in inconsequential information in the time
581 tuple pre-2.4.
582
Bob Ippolito5ea4bf12006-07-15 16:53:15 +0000583- Patch #1220874: Update the binhex module for Mach-O.
584
Barry Warsawb110bad2006-07-21 14:51:07 +0000585- The email package has improved RFC 2231 support, specifically for
586 recognizing the difference between encoded (name*0*=<blah>) and non-encoded
587 (name*0=<blah>) parameter continuations. This may change the types of
588 values returned from email.message.Message.get_param() and friends.
589 Specifically in some cases where non-encoded continuations were used,
590 get_param() used to return a 3-tuple of (None, None, string) whereas now it
591 will just return the string (since non-encoded continuations don't have
592 charset and language parts).
593
594 Also, whereas % values were decoded in all parameter continuations, they are
595 now only decoded in encoded parameter parts.
596
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +0000597- Bug #1517990: IDLE keybindings on MacOS X now work correctly
598
599- Bug #1517996: IDLE now longer shows the default Tk menu when a
600 path browser, class browser or debugger is the frontmost window on MacOS X

Barry Warsaw00decd72006-07-27 23:43:15 +0000602- Patch #1520294: Support for getset and member descriptors in types.py,
603 inspect.py, and pydoc.py. Specifically, this allows for querying the type
604 of an object against these built-in types and more importantly, for getting
605 their docstrings printed in the interactive interpreter's help() function.

628 arrays, without the need to check the array size before.
629
Thomas Heller6e1ad2e2006-07-13 17:05:13 +0000630- Bug #1521375: When the code in ctypes.util.find_library was

Thomas Heller2bdf29e2006-07-13 17:01:14 +0000632 /dev/null in certain cases; this is now fixed.
633
Thomas Heller47d7a062006-07-12 08:43:47 +0000634- Bug #1467450: On Mac OS X 10.3, RTLD_GLOBAL is now used as the

653
Georg Brandl4793aa32006-07-28 18:31:39 +0000654- Patch #1529686: The standard tests ``test_defaultdict``, ``test_iterlen``,

703
Neal Norwitzed657552006-07-10 00:04:44 +0000704- Bug #1512814, Fix incorrect lineno's when code at module scope
705 started after line 256.
706
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +0000707- New function ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dict mapping thread
708 id to topmost thread stack frame. This is for expert use, and is
709 especially useful for debugging application deadlocks. The functionality
710 was previously available in Fazal Majid's ``threadframe`` extension
711 module, but it wasn't possible to do this in a wholly threadsafe way from
712 an extension.

732 be treated as the value they contain, instead.
733
Martin v. Löwisede77f52006-07-03 13:01:35 +0000734- Bug #822974: Honor timeout in telnetlib.{expect,read_until}

759
Brett Cannon53ab5b72006-06-22 16:49:14 +0000760- Bug #1510580: The 'warnings' module improperly required that a Warning
761 category be either a types.ClassType and a subclass of Warning. The proper
762 check is just that it is a subclass with Warning as the documentation states.
763
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +0000764- The compiler module now correctly compiles the new try-except-finally

774 now.
775
Neal Norwitz0f8b31a2006-06-28 06:28:31 +0000776Extension Modules
777-----------------
778
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000779- #1494314: Fix a regression with high-numbered sockets in 2.4.3. This
780 means that select() on sockets > FD_SETSIZE (typically 1024) work again.
781 The patch makes sockets use poll() internally where available.
Anthony Baxter93ab5fa2006-07-11 02:04:09 +0000782
Thomas Hellerb9cb84f2006-07-10 11:17:37 +0000783- Assigning None to pointer type fields in ctypes structures possible
784 overwrote the wrong fields, this is fixed now.
785
786- Fixed a segfault in _ctypes when ctypes.wintypes were imported
787 on non-Windows platforms.
788
789- Bug #1518190: The ctypes.c_void_p constructor now accepts any
790 integer or long, without range checking.
791
792- Patch #1517790: It is now possible to use custom objects in the ctypes
793 foreign function argtypes sequence as long as they provide a from_param
794 method, no longer is it required that the object is a ctypes type.
795
796- The '_ctypes' extension module now works when Python is configured
797 with the --without-threads option.
798
Martin v. Löwisee1e06d2006-07-02 18:44:00 +0000799- Bug #1513646: os.access on Windows now correctly determines write

814
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +0000815- 'configure' now detects the zlib library the same way as distutils.
Thomas Woutersfc34f6c2006-07-06 10:48:28 +0000816 Previously, the slight difference could cause compilation errors of the
817 'zlib' module on systems with more than one version of zlib.
818
Martin v. Löwis4cbd05c2006-07-06 07:05:21 +0000819- The MSI compileall step was fixed to also support a TARGETDIR

850Core and builtins
851-----------------
852
Georg Brandla56b9152006-06-19 06:35:54 +0000853- Patch #1507676: Error messages returned by invalid abstract object operations
854 (such as iterating over an integer) have been improved and now include the
855 type of the offending object to help with debugging.
856
Brett Cannonea3912b2006-06-13 21:46:41 +0000857- Bug #992017: A classic class that defined a __coerce__() method that returned
858 its arguments swapped would infinitely recurse and segfault the interpreter.
859
Neal Norwitz909eb122006-06-12 02:13:21 +0000860- Fix the socket tests so they can be run concurrently.
861
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +0000862- Removed 5 integers from C frame objects (PyFrameObject).
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +0000863 f_nlocals, f_ncells, f_nfreevars, f_stack_size, f_restricted.
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +0000864
Brett Cannon22565aa2006-06-09 22:31:23 +0000865- Bug #532646: object.__call__() will continue looking for the __call__
866 attribute on objects until one without one is found. This leads to recursion
867 when you take a class and set its __call__ attribute to an instance of the
868 class. Originally fixed for classic classes, but this fix is for new-style.
869 Removes the infinite_rec_3 crasher.
870
Georg Brandl24250812006-06-09 18:45:48 +0000871- The string and unicode methods startswith() and endswith() now accept
872 a tuple of prefixes/suffixes to look for. Implements RFE #1491485.
873
Brett Cannonde3b0522006-06-08 17:00:45 +0000874- Buffer objects, at the C level, never used the char buffer
875 implementation even when the char buffer for the wrapped object was
876 explicitly requested (originally returned the read or write buffer).
877 Now a TypeError is raised if the char buffer is not present but is
878 requested.
879
Georg Brandlddbaa662006-06-04 21:56:52 +0000880- Patch #1346214: Statements like "if 0: suite" are now again optimized
881 away like they were in Python 2.4.
882
Georg Brandlb7c8f542006-05-27 12:30:25 +0000883- Builtin exceptions are now full-blown new-style classes instead of
884 instances pretending to be classes, which speeds up exception handling
885 by about 80% in comparison to 2.5a2.
886
Martin v. Löwisd004fc82006-05-27 08:36:52 +0000887- Patch #1494554: Update unicodedata.numeric and unicode.isnumeric to
888 Unicode 4.1.
889
Georg Brandlf4ef1162006-05-26 18:03:31 +0000890- Patch #921466: sys.path_importer_cache is now used to cache valid and
891 invalid file paths for the built-in import machinery which leads to
892 fewer open calls on startup.
893
Tim Peters696cf432006-05-24 21:10:40 +0000894- Patch #1442927: ``long(str, base)`` is now up to 6x faster for non-power-
895 of-2 bases. The largest speedup is for inputs with about 1000 decimal
896 digits. Conversion from non-power-of-2 bases remains quadratic-time in
897 the number of input digits (it was and remains linear-time for bases
898 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32).
899
Tim Petersb713ec22006-05-23 18:45:30 +0000900- Bug #1334662: ``int(string, base)`` could deliver a wrong answer
901 when ``base`` was not 2, 4, 8, 10, 16 or 32, and ``string`` represented
902 an integer close to ``sys.maxint``. This was repaired by patch
903 #1335972, which also gives a nice speedup.
904
Richard Jonescebbefc2006-05-23 18:28:17 +0000905- Patch #1337051: reduced size of frame objects.
906
907- PyErr_NewException now accepts a tuple of base classes as its

920
Martin v. Löwis879768d2006-05-11 13:28:43 +0000921- WindowsError now has two error code attributes: errno, which carries
922 the error values from errno.h, and winerror, which carries the error
923 values from winerror.h. Previous versions put the winerror.h values
924 (from GetLastError()) into the errno attribute.

929
Tim Peters44bd9862006-06-01 13:49:23 +0000930- Patch #1497053 & bug #1275608: Exceptions occurring in ``__eq__()``
931 methods were always silently ignored by dictionaries when comparing keys.
932 They are now passed through (except when using the C API function
933 ``PyDict_GetItem()``, whose semantics did not change).
934
935- Bug #1456209: In some obscure cases it was possible for a class with a
936 custom ``__eq__()`` method to confuse dict internals when class instances
937 were used as a dict's keys and the ``__eq__()`` method mutated the dict.
938 No, you don't have any code that did this ;-)

969
970- Use Win32 API to implement os.{access,chdir,chmod,mkdir,remove,rename,rmdir,utime}.
971 As a result, these functions now raise WindowsError instead of OSError.
972
Tim Peters7a822da2006-05-25 21:50:17 +0000973- ``time.clock()`` on Win64 should use the high-performance Windows

996
Gregory P. Smithff7d9912006-06-08 05:17:08 +0000997- bsddb: the bsddb.dbtables Modify method now raises the proper error and

1037 guarantee that adjacent triples in the return list always describe
1038 non-adjacent blocks. Previously, a pair of matching blocks could end
1039 up being described by multiple adjacent triples that formed a partition
1040 of the matching pair.

1060 for lookup.
1061
Tim Petersd609b1a2006-06-02 23:22:51 +00001062- The functions in the ``pprint`` module now sort dictionaries by key
1063 before computing the display. Before 2.5, ``pprint`` sorted a dictionary
1064 if and only if its display required more than one line, although that
1065 wasn't documented. The new behavior increases predictability; e.g.,
1066 using ``pprint.pprint(a_dict)`` in a doctest is now reliable.

1144-----------------
1145
Thomas Heller1b046642006-04-18 18:51:06 +00001146- Bug #1465834: 'bdist_wininst preinstall script support' was fixed
1147 by converting these apis from macros into exported functions again:
1148
1149 PyParser_SimpleParseFile PyParser_SimpleParseString PyRun_AnyFile
1150 PyRun_AnyFileEx PyRun_AnyFileFlags PyRun_File PyRun_FileEx
1151 PyRun_FileFlags PyRun_InteractiveLoop PyRun_InteractiveOne

1153 PyRun_String Py_CompileString
1154
Martin v. Löwis45294a92006-04-18 06:24:08 +00001155- Under COUNT_ALLOCS, types are not necessarily immortal anymore.
1156
Martin v. Löwis19ab6c92006-04-16 18:55:50 +00001157- All uses of PyStructSequence_InitType have been changed to initialize
1158 the type objects only once, even if the interpreter is initialized
1159 multiple times.
1160
Neal Norwitz61546162006-04-14 05:20:28 +00001161- Bug #1454485, array.array('u') could crash the interpreter. This was
1162 due to PyArgs_ParseTuple(args, 'u#', ...) trying to convert buffers (strings)
1163 to unicode when it didn't make sense. 'u#' now requires a unicode string.
1164
1165- Py_UNICODE is unsigned. It was always documented as unsigned, but
1166 due to a bug had a signed value in previous versions.
1167
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001168- Patch #837242: ``id()`` of any Python object always gives a positive
1169 number now, which might be a long integer. ``PyLong_FromVoidPtr`` and
1170 ``PyLong_AsVoidPtr`` have been changed accordingly. Note that it has
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001171 never been correct to implement a ``__hash()__`` method that returns the
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001172 ``id()`` of an object:
Martin v. Löwis0bc2ab92006-04-10 20:28:17 +00001173
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001174 def __hash__(self):
1175 return id(self) # WRONG
1176
1177 because a hash result must be a (short) Python int but it was always
1178 possible for ``id()`` to return a Python long. However, because ``id()``
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001179 could return negative values before, on a 32-bit box an ``id()`` result
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001180 was always usable as a hash value before this patch. That's no longer
1181 necessarily so.
1182
1183- Python on OS X 10.3 and above now uses dlopen() (via dynload_shlib.c)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001184 to load extension modules and now provides the dl module. As a result,
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001185 sys.setdlopenflags() now works correctly on these systems. (SF patch
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001186 #1454844)
1187
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001188- Patch #1463867: enhanced garbage collection to allow cleanup of cycles
1189 involving generators that have paused outside of any ``try`` or ``with``
1190 blocks. (In 2.5a1, a paused generator that was part of a reference
1191 cycle could not be garbage collected, regardless of whether it was
1192 paused in a ``try`` or ``with`` block.)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001193
Anthony Baxter51bcb682006-04-05 14:51:42 +00001194Extension Modules

1199
Georg Brandlbbfe4fa2006-04-11 06:47:43 +00001200- Bug #1467952: os.listdir() now correctly raises an error if readdir()
1201 fails with an error condition.
1202
Gregory P. Smith3adc4aa2006-04-13 19:19:01 +00001203- Fixed bsddb.db.DBError derived exceptions so they can be unpickled.

1205- Bug #1117761: bsddb.*open() no longer raises an exception when using
1206 the cachesize parameter.
1207
1208- Bug #1149413: bsddb.*open() no longer raises an exception when using
1209 a temporary db (file=None) with the 'n' flag to truncate on open.
1210
1211- Bug #1332852: bsddb module minimum BerkeleyDB version raised to 3.3
1212 as older versions cause excessive test failures.
Gregory P. Smith7f5b6f42006-04-08 07:10:51 +00001213
Armin Rigoa9017c32006-04-19 11:50:27 +00001214- Patch #1062014: AF_UNIX sockets under Linux have a special

1222 abusing errno.
1223
Tim Peters711bf302006-04-25 03:31:36 +00001224- Patch #1475231: ``doctest`` has a new ``SKIP`` option, which causes
1225 a doctest to be skipped (the code is not run, and the expected output
1226 or exception is ignored).
1227

1238
Phillip J. Eby17a35f92006-04-18 16:45:14 +00001239- The pydoc module now supports documenting packages contained in
1240 .zip or .egg files.
1241

1243 as ``walk_packages()`` to support working with packages that are either
1244 in the filesystem or zip files.
1245
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001246- The mailbox module can now modify and delete messages from

1307
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001308- The test_contextlib test in 2.5a1 wasn't actually run unless you ran
1309 it separately and by hand. It also wasn't cleaning up its changes to
1310 the current Decimal context.
1311
Thomas Woutersabd08882006-04-26 15:53:30 +00001312- regrtest.py now has a -M option to run tests that test the new limits of
1313 containers, on 64-bit architectures. Running these tests is only sensible
1314 on 64-bit machines with more than two gigabytes of memory. The argument
1315 passed is the maximum amount of memory for the tests to use.
1316

Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00001341Core and builtins
1342-----------------
1343
Nick Coghlan43832302006-04-23 17:04:07 +00001344- PEP 338: -m command line switch now delegates to runpy.run_module
1345 allowing it to support modules in packages and zipfiles
1346
Martin v. Löwisc661b882006-04-20 04:54:23 +00001347- On Windows, .DLL is not an accepted file name extension for
1348 extension modules anymore; extensions are only found if they
1349 end in .PYD.
1350
Martin v. Löwisea62d252006-04-03 10:56:49 +00001351- Bug #1421664: sys.stderr.encoding is now set to the same value as
1352 sys.stdout.encoding.
1353
Neal Norwitz92e212f2006-04-03 04:48:37 +00001354- __import__ accepts keyword arguments.
1355
Georg Brandlccadf842006-03-31 18:54:53 +00001356- Patch #1460496: round() now accepts keyword arguments.
1357
Anthony Baxter262c00a2006-03-30 10:53:17 +00001358- Fixed bug #1459029 - unicode reprs were double-escaped.
1359
Hye-Shik Changd478f342006-03-23 12:32:36 +00001360- Patch #1396919: The system scope threads are reenabled on FreeBSD
1361 5.4 and later versions.
1362
Neal Norwitze98ccf62006-03-23 05:39:47 +00001363- Bug #1115379: Compiling a Unicode string with an encoding declaration
1364 now gives a SyntaxError.
1365
Georg Brandlabd1ff82006-03-18 07:59:59 +00001366- Previously, Python code had no easy way to access the contents of a
1367 cell object. Now, a ``cell_contents`` attribute has been added
1368 (closes patch #1170323).
1369
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001370- Patch #1123430: Python's small-object allocator now returns an arena to
1371 the system ``free()`` when all memory within an arena becomes unused
1372 again. Prior to Python 2.5, arenas (256KB chunks of memory) were never
1373 freed. Some applications will see a drop in virtual memory size now,
1374 especially long-running applications that, from time to time, temporarily
1375 use a large number of small objects. Note that when Python returns an
1376 arena to the platform C's ``free()``, there's no guarantee that the
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001377 platform C library will in turn return that memory to the operating system.
1378 The effect of the patch is to stop making that impossible, and in tests it
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001379 appears to be effective at least on Microsoft C and gcc-based systems.
1380 Thanks to Evan Jones for hard work and patience.
1381
Georg Brandl533ff6f2006-03-08 18:09:27 +00001382- Patch #1434038: property() now uses the getter's docstring if there is
1383 no "doc" argument given. This makes it possible to legitimately use
1384 property() as a decorator to produce a read-only property.
1385
Guido van Rossum9aa37ab2006-03-07 18:54:08 +00001386- PEP 357, patch 1436368: add an __index__ method to int/long and a matching
1387 nb_index slot to the PyNumberMethods struct. The slot is consulted instead
1388 of requiring an int or long in slicing and a few other contexts, enabling
1389 other objects (e.g. Numeric Python's integers) to be used as slice indices.
1390
Neal Norwitz995acdf2006-03-07 05:01:00 +00001391- Fixed various bugs reported by Coverity's Prevent tool.
1392
Brett Cannonbf364092006-03-01 04:25:17 +00001393- PEP 352, patch #1104669: Make exceptions new-style objects. Introduced the
1394 new exception base class, BaseException, which has a new message attribute.
1395 KeyboardInterrupt and SystemExit to directly inherit from BaseException now.
1396 Raising a string exception now raises a DeprecationWarning.
1397
Thomas Woutersfb609f42006-02-28 16:37:25 +00001398- Patch #1438387, PEP 328: relative and absolute imports. Imports can now be
1399 explicitly relative, using 'from .module import name' to mean 'from the same
1400 package as this module is in. Imports without dots still default to the
1401 old relative-then-absolute, unless 'from __future__ import
1402 absolute_import' is used.
1403
Brett Cannona7446e32006-02-27 23:39:10 +00001404- Properly check if 'warnings' raises an exception (usually when a filter set
1405 to "error" is triggered) when raising a warning for raising string
1406 exceptions.
1407
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001408- CO_GENERATOR_ALLOWED is no longer defined. This behavior is the default.
Neal Norwitz0023a2f2006-02-27 23:24:48 +00001409 The name was removed from Include/code.h.
1410
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001411- PEP 308: conditional expressions were added: (x if cond else y).
Neal Norwitzeb651252006-02-27 16:47:12 +00001412
Guido van Rossum1968ad32006-02-25 22:38:04 +00001413- Patch 1433928:
1414 - The copy module now "copies" function objects (as atomic objects).
1415 - dict.__getitem__ now looks for a __missing__ hook before raising
1416 KeyError.
1417
Tim Peters84ef21c2006-02-28 20:39:06 +00001418- PEP 343: with statement implemented. Needs ``from __future__ import
1419 with_statement``. Use of 'with' as a variable will generate a warning.
1420 Use of 'as' as a variable will also generate a warning (unless it's
Neal Norwitz055ec242006-02-28 20:06:49 +00001421 part of an import statement).
Guido van Rossum1a5e21e2006-02-28 21:57:43 +00001422 The following objects have __context__ methods:
1423 - The built-in file type.
1424 - The thread.LockType type.
1425 - The following types defined by the threading module:
1426 Lock, RLock, Condition, Semaphore, BoundedSemaphore.
1427 - The decimal.Context class.
Guido van Rossumc2e20742006-02-27 22:32:47 +00001428
Marc-André Lemburgfe4b34c2006-02-19 15:22:22 +00001429- Fix the encodings package codec search function to only search
1430 inside its own package. Fixes problem reported in patch #1433198.
1431
1432 Note: Codec packages should implement and register their own
1433 codec search function. PEP 100 has the details.
1434
Tim Peters9ea89d22006-06-04 03:26:02 +00001435- PEP 353: Using ``Py_ssize_t`` as the index type.
1436
1437- ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` builds now add ``4*sizeof(size_t)`` bytes of debugging
1438 info to each allocated block, since the ``Py_ssize_t`` changes (PEP 353)
1439 now allow Python to make use of memory blocks exceeding 2**32 bytes for
1440 some purposes on 64-bit boxes. A ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` build was limited
1441 to 4-byte allocations before.
Martin v. Löwis18e16552006-02-15 17:27:45 +00001442
Neal Norwitzfc76d632006-01-10 06:03:13 +00001443- Patch #1400181, fix unicode string formatting to not use the locale.
1444 This is how string objects work. u'%f' could use , instead of .
1445 for the decimal point. Now both strings and unicode always use periods.
1446
Neal Norwitz671b9e32006-01-09 07:07:12 +00001447- Bug #1244610, #1392915, fix build problem on OpenBSD 3.7 and 3.8.
1448 configure would break checking curses.h.
1449
Georg Brandlcd4d1e82005-12-27 17:37:07 +00001450- Bug #959576: The pwd module is now builtin. This allows Python to be
1451 built on UNIX platforms without $HOME set.
1452
Neal Norwitzc10978f2005-12-19 06:07:16 +00001453- Bug #1072182, fix some potential problems if characters are signed.
1454
Neal Norwitz5d0ad502005-12-19 04:27:42 +00001455- Bug #889500, fix line number on SyntaxWarning for global declarations.
1456
Neal Norwitzdb83eb32005-12-18 05:29:30 +00001457- Bug #1378022, UTF-8 files with a leading BOM crashed the interpreter.
1458
Neal Norwitze7214a12005-12-18 05:03:17 +00001459- Support for converting hex strings to floats no longer works.
1460 This was not portable. float('0x3') now raises a ValueError.
1461
Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001462- Patch #1382163: Expose Subversion revision number to Python. New C API
Barry Warsawd3c38ff2006-03-07 09:46:03 +00001463 function Py_GetBuildNumber(). New attribute sys.subversion. Build number
Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001464 is now displayed in interactive prompt banner.
1465
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00001466- Implementation of PEP 341 - Unification of try/except and try/finally.
1467 "except" clauses can now be written together with a "finally" clause in
Neal Norwitz11ca77e2005-12-17 22:24:12 +00001468 one try statement instead of two nested ones. Patch #1355913.
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00001469
Hye-Shik Chang835b2432005-12-17 04:38:31 +00001470- Bug #1379994: Builtin unicode_escape and raw_unicode_escape codec
1471 now encodes backslash correctly.
1472
Martin v. Löwisb45b3152005-11-28 17:34:23 +00001473- Patch #1350409: Work around signal handling bug in Visual Studio 2005.
1474
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001475- Bug #1281408: Py_BuildValue now works correctly even with unsigned longs
Georg Brandlf06e30a2005-11-24 15:37:42 +00001476 and long longs.
1477
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001478- SF Bug #1350188, "setdlopenflags" leads to crash upon "import"
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001479 It was possible for dlerror() to return a NULL pointer, so
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001480 it will now use a default error message in this case.
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001481
Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00001482- Replaced most Unicode charmap codecs with new ones using the
1483 new Unicode translate string feature in the builtin charmap
1484 codec; the codecs were created from the mapping tables available
1485 at ftp.unicode.org and contain a few updates (e.g. the Mac OS
1486 encodings now include a mapping for the Apple logo)
1487
Tim Peterse3547fd2005-12-16 23:13:57 +00001488- Added a few more codecs for Mac OS encodings

1507
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001508- All iterators now have a Boolean value of True. Formerly, some iterators
Raymond Hettinger6b27cda2005-09-24 21:23:05 +00001509 supported a __len__() method which evaluated to False when the iterator
1510 was empty.
1511
Guido van Rossum630db602005-09-20 18:49:54 +00001512- On 64-bit platforms, when __len__() returns a value that cannot be
1513 represented as a C int, raise OverflowError.
1514
Skip Montanarof8948ca2005-09-19 03:54:46 +00001515- test__locale is skipped on OS X < 10.4 (only partial locale support is
Walter Dörwald6611a8b2005-10-09 19:28:35 +00001516 present).

Georg Brandl80bbf3f2005-09-14 19:38:29 +00001518- SF bug #893549: parsing keyword arguments was broken with a few format
1519 codes.
1520
Guido van Rossum8ee3e5a2005-09-14 18:09:42 +00001521- Changes donated by Elemental Security to make it work on AIX 5.3
1522 with IBM's 64-bit compiler (SF patch #1284289). This also closes SF
1523 bug #105470: test_pwd fails on 64bit system (Opteron).
1524
Guido van Rossum539c6622005-09-14 17:49:54 +00001525- Changes donated by Elemental Security to make it work on HP-UX 11 on
1526 Itanium2 with HP's 64-bit compiler (SF patch #1225212).

Georg Brandl02c42872005-08-26 06:42:30 +00001529 (fixes bug #1119418).
1530
Martin v. Löwisd35edda2005-08-24 08:39:24 +00001531- Forward UnicodeDecodeError into SyntaxError for source encoding errors.
1532
Barry Warsawe2eca0b2005-08-15 18:14:19 +00001533- SF bug #900092: When tracing (e.g. for hotshot), restore 'return' events for
1534 exceptions that cause a function to exit.
1535
Raymond Hettinger9f1a6792005-07-31 01:16:36 +00001536- The implementation of set() and frozenset() was revised to use its
1537 own internal data structure. Memory consumption is reduced by 1/3
1538 and there are modest speed-ups as well. The API is unchanged.
1539
Tim Petersde7990b2005-07-17 23:45:23 +00001540- SF bug #1238681: freed pointer is used in longobject.c:long_pow().
1541
Michael W. Hudson0edc7a02005-07-12 10:21:19 +00001542- SF bug #1229429: PyObject_CallMethod failed to decrement some
1543 reference counts in some error exit cases.
1544
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001545- SF bug #1185883: Python's small-object memory allocator took over
1546 a block managed by the platform C library whenever a realloc specified
1547 a small new size. However, there's no portable way to know then how
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001548 much of the address space following the pointer is valid, so there's no
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001549 portable way to copy data from the C-managed block into Python's
1550 small-object space without risking a memory fault. Python's small-object
1551 realloc now leaves such blocks under the control of the platform C
1552 realloc.
1553
Michael W. Hudsonb8963812005-07-05 15:21:58 +00001554- SF bug #1232517: An overflow error was not detected properly when
1555 attempting to convert a large float to an int in os.utime().
1556
Raymond Hettinger3296e692005-06-29 23:29:56 +00001557- SF bug #1224347: hex longs now print with lowercase letters just
1558 like their int counterparts.
1559
Michael W. Hudson188d4362005-06-20 16:52:57 +00001560- SF bug #1163563: the original fix for bug #1010677 ("thread Module
1561 Breaks PyGILState_Ensure()") broke badly in the case of multiple
1562 interpreter states; back out that fix and do a better job (see
1563 http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-dev/2005-June/054258.html
1564 for a longer write-up of the problem).
1565
Michael W. Hudsondf888462005-06-03 14:41:55 +00001566- SF patch #1180995: marshal now uses a binary format by default when
1567 serializing floats.
1568
Michael W. Hudsonda85a902005-06-01 11:34:22 +00001569- SF patch #1181301: on platforms that appear to use IEEE 754 floats,
1570 the routines that promise to produce IEEE 754 binary representations
1571 of floats now simply copy bytes around.
1572
Skip Montanarobbf12ba2005-05-20 03:07:06 +00001573- bug #967182: disallow opening files with 'wU' or 'aU' as specified by PEP
1574 278.
1575
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001576- patch #1109424: int, long, float, complex, and unicode now check for the
1577 proper magic slot for type conversions when subclassed. Previously the
1578 magic slot was ignored during conversion. Semantics now match the way
1579 subclasses of str always behaved. int/long/float, conversion of an instance
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00001580 to the base class has been moved to the proper nb_* magic slot and out of
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001581 PyNumber_*().
Neal Norwitzcfba5f82006-04-25 05:05:03 +00001582 Thanks Walter Drwald.
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001583
Barry Warsawc8d907c2005-04-19 23:43:40 +00001584- Descriptors defined in C with a PyGetSetDef structure, where the setter is
1585 NULL, now raise an AttributeError when attempting to set or delete the
1586 attribute. Previously a TypeError was raised, but this was inconsistent
1587 with the equivalent pure-Python implementation.
1588
Michael W. Hudson774479c2005-04-18 08:46:17 +00001589- It is now safe to call PyGILState_Release() before
1590 PyEval_InitThreads() (note that if there is reason to believe there
1591 are multiple threads around you still must call PyEval_InitThreads()
1592 before using the Python API; this fix is for extension modules that
1593 have no way of knowing if Python is multi-threaded yet).
1594
Michael W. Hudsone3afc592005-04-07 10:11:19 +00001595- Typing Ctrl-C whilst raw_input() was waiting in a build with threads
1596 disabled caused a crash.
1597
Michael W. Hudsonb330adf2005-03-31 09:35:44 +00001598- Bug #1165306: instancemethod_new allowed the creation of a method
1599 with im_class == im_self == NULL, which caused a crash when called.
1600
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001601- Move exception finalisation later in the shutdown process - this
Anthony Baxter12b6f6c2005-03-29 13:36:16 +00001602 fixes the crash seen in bug #1165761

1605
Brett Cannon409d8f22005-03-05 06:47:57 +00001606- Defining a class with empty parentheses is now allowed
Brett Cannonf4189912005-04-09 02:30:16 +00001607 (e.g., ``class C(): pass`` is no longer a syntax error).
1608 Patch #1176012 added support to the 'parser' module and 'compiler' package
1609 (thanks to logistix for that added support).
Brett Cannon409d8f22005-03-05 06:47:57 +00001610

1623
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001624- Bug #1074011: closing sys.std{out,err} now causes a flush() and
Martin v. Löwis8e3ca8a2005-01-23 09:41:49 +00001625 an ferror() call.
1626
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00001627- min() and max() now support key= arguments with the same meaning as in

Jeremy Hyltonab630502005-02-04 18:44:06 +00001638- The parser did not complain about future statements in illegal
1639 positions. It once again reports a syntax error if a future
1640 statement occurs after anything other than a doc string.
1641
Neil Schemenauercf52c072005-08-12 17:34:58 +00001642- Change the %s format specifier for str objects so that it returns a
1643 unicode instance if the argument is not an instance of basestring and
1644 calling __str__ on the argument returns a unicode instance.
1645
Tim Petersf4e69282006-02-27 17:15:31 +00001646- Patch #1413181: changed ``PyThreadState_Delete()`` to forget about the
1647 current thread state when the auto-GIL-state machinery knows about
1648 it (since the thread state is being deleted, continuing to remember it
1649 can't help, but can hurt if another thread happens to get created with
1650 the same thread id).

Georg Brandl828fdef2006-04-01 08:59:03 +00001861 a DB-API interface in the standard library. You'll need sqlite 3.0.8 or
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001862 later to build this - if you have an earlier version, the C extension
Anthony Baxterc51ee692006-04-01 00:57:31 +00001863 module will not be built.

1888
Barry Warsaw4d90bbd2006-03-22 02:45:50 +00001889- email 4.0 package now integrated. This is largely the same as the email 3.0
1890 package that was included in Python 2.3, except that PEP 8 module names are
1891 now used (e.g. mail.message instead of email.Message). The MIME classes
1892 have been moved to a subpackage (e.g. email.mime.text instead of
1893 email.MIMEText). The old names are still supported for now. Several
1894 deprecated Message methods have been removed and lots of bugs have been
1895 fixed. More details can be found in the email package documentation.

2169
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002170- Enhancements to the csv module:
2171
2172 + Dialects are now validated by the underlying C code, better
Georg Brandl7eb4b7d2005-07-22 21:49:32 +00002173 reflecting its capabilities, and improving its compliance with
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002174 PEP 305.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002175 + Dialect parameter parsing has been re-implemented to improve error
2176 reporting.
2177 + quotechar=None and quoting=QUOTE_NONE now work the way PEP 305
2178 dictates.
2179 + the parser now removes the escapechar prefix from escaped characters.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002180 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the writer now tests for numeric
Andrew M. Kuchling6db67822006-04-18 14:04:57 +00002181 types, rather than any object that can be represented as a numeric.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002182 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the reader now casts unquoted fields
2183 to floats.
Andrew McNamaraf69d94f2005-01-13 11:30:54 +00002184 + reader now allows \r characters to be quoted (previously it only allowed
2185 \n to be quoted).
Andrew McNamarac89f2842005-01-12 07:44:42 +00002186 + writer doublequote handling improved.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002187 + Dialect classes passed to the module are no longer instantiated by
2188 the module before being parsed (the former validation scheme required
2189 this, but the mechanism was unreliable).
2190 + The dialect registry now contains instances of the internal
2191 C-coded dialect type, rather than references to python objects.
2192 + the internal c-coded dialect type is now immutable.
2193 + register_dialect now accepts the same keyword dialect specifications
2194 as the reader and writer, allowing the user to register dialects
2195 without first creating a dialect class.
2196 + a configurable limit to the size of parsed fields has been added -
2197 previously, an unmatched quote character could result in the entire
2198 file being read into the field buffer before an error was reported.
Andrew McNamara31d88962005-01-12 03:45:10 +00002199 + A new module method csv.field_size_limit() has been added that sets
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002200 the parser field size limit (returning the former limit). The initial
2201 limit is 128kB.
Andrew McNamara7f2053e2005-01-12 11:17:16 +00002202 + A line_num attribute has been added to the reader object, which tracks
2203 the number of lines read from the source iterator. This is not
2204 the same as the number of records returned, as records can span
2205 multiple lines.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002206 + reader and writer objects were not being registered with the cyclic-GC.
2207 This has been fixed.
2208
Brett Cannone6539c42005-01-08 02:43:53 +00002209- _DummyThread objects in the threading module now delete self.__block that is
2210 inherited from _Thread since it uses up a lock allocated by 'thread'. The
2211 lock primitives tend to be limited in number and thus should not be wasted on
2212 a _DummyThread object. Fixes bug #1089632.
2213
Raymond Hettinger97db05d2005-01-07 08:15:41 +00002214- The imghdr module now detects Exif files.
2215

2217 (Bug #951915).
2218
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002219- locale.py now uses an updated locale alias table (built using
2220 Tools/i18n/makelocalealias.py, a tool to parse the X11 locale
2221 alias file); the encoding lookup was enhanced to use Python's
Andrew M. Kuchling88b85822005-08-23 00:57:07 +00002222 encoding alias table.
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002223

2225
Raymond Hettingera6b45cc2004-12-07 07:05:57 +00002226- the pickle module no longer accepts the deprecated None option in the
2227 args tuple returned by __reduce__().
2228
Brett Cannon84667c02004-12-07 03:25:18 +00002229- optparse now optionally imports gettext. This allows its use in setup.py.

2236
Raymond Hettingerf3fa9462004-12-05 01:58:09 +00002237- the filecmp module no longer uses the deprecated use_statcache argument.
2238
Raymond Hettinger664347b2004-12-04 21:21:53 +00002239- unittest.TestCase.run() and unittest.TestSuite.run() can now be successfully
2240 extended or overridden by subclasses. Formerly, the subclassed method would
2241 be ignored by the rest of the module. (Bug #1078905).
2242
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002243- heapq.nsmallest() and heapq.nlargest() now support key= arguments with
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00002244 the same meaning as in list.sort().
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002245
Walter Dörwald36733692004-12-22 12:50:50 +00002246- Bug #1076985: ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` now calls ``read()`` only
2247 once when a size argument is given. This prevents a buffer overflow in the
2248 tokenizer with very long source lines.
2249
Barry Warsaw538561e2006-01-01 21:48:54 +00002250- Bug #1083110: ``zlib.decompress.flush()`` would segfault if called
2251 immediately after creating the object, without any intervening
2252 ``.decompress()`` calls.
Andrew M. Kuchling3b585b32004-12-28 20:10:48 +00002253
Skip Montanaro05885812005-01-16 20:48:27 +00002254- The reconvert.quote function can now emit triple-quoted strings. The
2255 reconvert module now has some simple documentation.
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002256
Walter Dörwaldaf3b39a2005-02-18 13:22:43 +00002257- ``UserString.MutableString`` now supports negative indices in
2258 ``__setitem__`` and ``__delitem__``
2259
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00002260- Bug #1149508: ``textwrap`` now handles hyphenated numbers (eg. "2004-03-05")
2261 correctly.
2262
Walter Dörwaldbc8e6422005-04-21 21:32:03 +00002263- Partial fixes for SF bugs #1163244 and #1175396: If a chunk read by
2264 ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` has a trailing "\r", read one more
2265 character even if the user has passed a size parameter to get a proper
2266 line ending. Remove the special handling of a "\r\n" that has been split
2267 between two lines.
2268
Walter Dörwalda47d1c02005-08-30 10:23:14 +00002269- Bug #1251300: On UCS-4 builds the "unicode-internal" codec will now complain
2270 about illegal code points. The codec now supports PEP 293 style error
2271 handlers.
2272
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00002273- Bug #1235646: ``codecs.StreamRecoder.next()`` now reencodes the data it reads
Walter Dörwaldc5238b82005-09-01 11:56:53 +00002274 from the input stream, so that the output is a byte string in the correct
2275 encoding instead of a unicode string.
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00002276
Gustavo Niemeyer6fa0c5a2005-09-14 08:54:39 +00002277- Bug #1202493: Fixing SRE parser to handle '{}' as perl does, rather than
2278 considering it exactly like a '*'.
2279
Walter Dörwald007f8df2005-10-09 19:42:27 +00002280- Bug #1245379: Add "unicode-1-1-utf-7" as an alias for "utf-7" to
2281 ``encodings.aliases``.
Gustavo Niemeyer6fa0c5a2005-09-14 08:54:39 +00002282
Walter Dörwald09f0dd52005-11-21 19:10:07 +00002283- ` uu.encode()`` and ``uu.decode()`` now support unicode filenames.
2284
Gustavo Niemeyer548148812006-01-31 18:34:13 +00002285- Patch #1413711: Certain patterns of differences were making difflib
2286 touch the recursion limit.
2287
Walter Dörwald58917a62006-03-31 15:26:22 +00002288- Bug #947906: An object oriented interface has been added to the calendar
2289 module. It's possible to generate HTML calendar now and the module can be
Walter Dörwald48d5e502006-04-01 07:57:00 +00002290 called as a script (e.g. via ``python -mcalendar``). Localized month and
2291 weekday names can be ouput (even if an exotic encoding is used) using
2292 special classes that use unicode.

Brett Cannon08cd5982005-04-24 22:26:38 +00002319- EXTRA_CFLAGS has been introduced as an environment variable to hold compiler
2320 flags that change binary compatibility. Changes were also made to
2321 distutils.sysconfig to also use the environment variable when used during
Martin v. Löwisd7c795e2005-04-25 07:14:03 +00002322 compilation of the interpreter and of C extensions through distutils.

Bob Ippolitoed233462005-03-29 13:47:59 +00002324- SF patch 1171735: Darwin 8's headers are anal about POSIX compliance,
2325 and linking has changed (prebinding is now deprecated, and libcc_dynamic
2326 no longer exists). This configure patch makes things right.

2329
Brett Cannon46d96232005-02-16 00:07:19 +00002330- spwdmodule.c is built only if either HAVE_GETSPNAM or HAVE_HAVE_GETSPENT is
2331 defined. Discovered as a result of not being able to build on OS X.
2332
Brett Cannon516592f2004-12-07 00:42:59 +00002333- setup.py now uses the directories specified in LDFLAGS using the -L option
2334 and in CPPFLAGS using the -I option for adding library and include
2335 directories, respectively, for compiling extension modules against. This has
2336 led to the core being compiled using the values in CPPFLAGS. It also removes
2337 the need for the special-casing of both DarwinPorts and Fink for darwin since
2338 the proper directories can be specified in LDFLAGS (``-L/sw/lib`` for Fink,
2339 ``-L/opt/local/lib`` for DarwinPorts) and CPPFLAGS (``-I/sw/include`` for
2340 Fink, ``-I/opt/local/include`` for DarwinPorts).
2341
Brett Cannon43802422005-02-10 20:48:03 +00002342- Test in configure.in that checks for tzset no longer dependent on tm->tm_zone
2343 to exist in the struct (not required by either ISO C nor the UNIX 2 spec).
2344 Tests for sanity in tzname when HAVE_TZNAME defined were also defined.
2345 Closes bug #1096244. Thanks Gregory Bond.

2348-----
2349
Tim Petersc9d78aa2006-03-26 23:27:58 +00002350- ``PyMem_{Del, DEL}`` and ``PyMem_{Free, FREE}`` no longer map to
2351 ``PyObject_{Free, FREE}``. They map to the system ``free()`` now. If memory
2352 is obtained via the ``PyObject_`` family, it must be released via the
2353 ``PyObject_`` family, and likewise for the ``PyMem_`` family. This has
2354 always been officially true, but when Python's small-object allocator was
2355 introduced, an attempt was made to cater to a few extension modules
2356 discovered at the time that obtained memory via ``PyObject_New`` but
2357 released it via ``PyMem_DEL``. It's years later, and if such code still
2358 exists it will fail now (probably with segfaults, but calling wrong
2359 low-level memory management functions can yield many symptoms).
2360
Raymond Hettingerbeb31012005-08-16 03:47:52 +00002361- Added a C API for set and frozenset objects.
2362

2364
Walter Dörwaldd1c1e102005-10-06 20:29:57 +00002365- Patch #1313939: PyUnicode_DecodeCharmap() accepts a unicode string as the
2366 mapping argument now. This string is used as a mapping table. Byte values
2367 greater than the length of the string and 0xFFFE are treated as undefined
2368 mappings.
