14
Georg Brandl7b9c5552007-03-12 14:30:05 +000015- Bug #1678647: write a newline after printing an exception in any
16 case, even when converting the value to a string failed.
17
Georg Brandl871f1bc2007-03-12 13:17:36 +000018- The dir() function has been extended to call the __dir__() method on
19 its argument, if it exists. If not, it will work like before. This allows
20 customizing the output of dir() in the presence of a __getattr__().
21
Collin Winter276887b2007-03-12 16:11:39 +000022- Patch #922167: Python no longer segfaults when faced with infinitely
23 self-recursive reload() calls (as reported by bug #742342).

33 a PYTHONSTARTUP file is used.
34
Georg Brandl49aafc92007-03-07 00:34:46 +000035- Variant of patch #697613: don't exit the interpreter on a SystemExit
36 exception if the -i command line option or PYTHONINSPECT environment
37 variable is given, but break into the interactive interpreter just like
38 on other exceptions or normal program exit.

51
Brett Cannon129bd522007-01-30 21:34:36 +000052- PEP 352: Raising a string exception now triggers a TypeError. Attempting to
53 catch a string exception raises DeprecationWarning.
54
Brett Cannonf5bee302007-01-23 23:21:22 +000055- Bug #1377858: Fix the segfaulting of the interpreter when an object created

Jeremy Hyltoncca75402007-02-27 18:33:31 +0000161- Add new requirements for metaclasses. 1) If type or a subclass of type
162 occurs in __bases__, it must occur before any non-type bases, e.g.
163 before regular classes. 2) If you assign to __bases__, you may not

694Core and builtins
695-----------------
696
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000697- Unicode objects will no longer raise an exception when being
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000698 compared equal or unequal to a string and a UnicodeDecodeError
699 exception occurs, e.g. as result of a decoding failure.
Neal Norwitz56423e52006-08-13 18:11:08 +0000700
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000701 Instead, the equal (==) and unequal (!=) comparison operators will
702 now issue a UnicodeWarning and interpret the two objects as
703 unequal. The UnicodeWarning can be filtered as desired using
704 the warning framework, e.g. silenced completely, turned into an
705 exception, logged, etc.
706
707 Note that compare operators other than equal and unequal will still
708 raise UnicodeDecodeError exceptions as they've always done.
Neal Norwitz8a87f5d2006-08-12 17:03:09 +0000709
Marc-André Lemburg757ea272006-08-14 11:44:34 +0000710- Fix segfault when doing string formatting on subclasses of long.
711
712- Fix bug related to __len__ functions using values > 2**32 on 64-bit machines
713 with new-style classes.
714
715- Fix bug related to __len__ functions returning negative values with
716 classic classes.
717
718- Patch #1538606, Fix __index__() clipping. There were some problems
719 discovered with the API and how integers that didn't fit into Py_ssize_t
720 were handled. This patch attempts to provide enough alternatives
721 to effectively use __index__.
722
Martin v. Löwisab2f8f72006-08-09 07:57:39 +0000723- Bug #1536021: __hash__ may now return long int; the final hash
724 value is obtained by invoking hash on the long int.
725
Thomas Hellerab1049c2006-08-08 17:37:00 +0000726- Bug #1536786: buffer comparison could emit a RuntimeWarning.
727
Georg Brandl7e3ba2a2006-08-06 08:23:54 +0000728- Bug #1535165: fixed a segfault in input() and raw_input() when
729 sys.stdin is closed.
730
Thomas Heller74d36f02006-08-04 18:17:40 +0000731- On Windows, the PyErr_Warn function is now exported from
732 the Python dll again.
733
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000734- Bug #1191458: tracing over for loops now produces a line event
735 on each iteration. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc
736 magic number. This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5c1
737 will be regenerated.
738
Neal Norwitz0cbd8052006-08-04 05:09:28 +0000739- Bug #1333982: string/number constants were inappropriately stored
740 in the byte code and co_consts even if they were not used, ie
741 immediately popped off the stack.
742
Georg Brandle9462c72006-08-04 18:03:37 +0000743- Fixed a reference-counting problem in property().
744

746Library
747-------
748
Neil Schemenauer4c6b0d52006-08-16 23:38:05 +0000749- Fix a bug in the ``compiler`` package that caused invalid code to be
750 generated for generator expressions.
751
Marc-André Lemburg574cfea2006-08-16 16:11:01 +0000752- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0. The change to
753 keep it programmatically in sync with the Python version running
754 the code (introduced in 2.5b3) has been reverted. It will continue
755 to be maintained manually as static string literal.
756
Andrew M. Kuchlingc13324e2006-08-16 17:11:18 +0000757- If the Python part of a ctypes callback function returns None,
Thomas Hellerb4a0cf12006-08-16 15:10:12 +0000758 and this cannot be converted to the required C type, an exception is
759 printed with PyErr_WriteUnraisable. Before this change, the C
Andrew M. Kuchlingc13324e2006-08-16 17:11:18 +0000760 callback returned arbitrary values to the calling code.
Thomas Hellerb4a0cf12006-08-16 15:10:12 +0000761
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000762- The __repr__ method of a NULL ctypes.py_object() no longer raises
Thomas Hellerb0aa98f2006-08-16 14:07:44 +0000763 an exception.
764
Tim Petersc10c9d02006-09-05 02:18:09 +0000765- uuid.UUID now has a bytes_le attribute. This returns the UUID in
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000766 little-endian byte order for Windows. In addition, uuid.py gained some
Anthony Baxter58179592006-08-16 13:08:25 +0000767 workarounds for clocks with low resolution, to stop the code yielding
768 duplicate UUIDs.
769
Kurt B. Kaiserd112bc72006-08-16 05:01:42 +0000770- Patch #1540892: site.py Quitter() class attempts to close sys.stdin
771 before raising SystemExit, allowing IDLE to honor quit() and exit().
772
Neal Norwitzbf8c1952006-08-15 04:14:57 +0000773- Bug #1224621: make tabnanny recognize IndentationErrors raised by tokenize.
774
Georg Brandl7a1af772006-08-14 21:55:28 +0000775- Patch #1536071: trace.py should now find the full module name of a
776 file correctly even on Windows.
777
Georg Brandl0a7d1bb2006-08-11 07:26:10 +0000778- logging's atexit hook now runs even if the rest of the module has
779 already been cleaned up.
780
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000781- Bug #1112549, fix DoS attack on cgi.FieldStorage.
Guido van Rossum133f4e42006-08-10 17:42:50 +0000782
Neal Norwitzff4b63b2006-08-04 04:50:21 +0000783- Bug #1531405, format_exception no longer raises an exception if
784 str(exception) raised an exception.
785
Neil Schemenauer06ded092006-08-04 16:20:30 +0000786- Fix a bug in the ``compiler`` package that caused invalid code to be
787 generated for nested functions.

797
Thomas Heller1ce433e2006-08-14 16:20:04 +0000798- Patch # 1536908: enable building ctypes on OpenBSD/AMD64. The
799 '-no-stack-protector' compiler flag for OpenBSD has been removed.
800
Thomas Heller86720042006-08-14 11:17:48 +0000801- Patch #1532975 was applied, which fixes Bug #1533481: ctypes now
802 uses the _as_parameter_ attribute when objects are passed to foreign
803 function calls. The ctypes version number was changed to 1.0.1.
804
Bob Ippolitoe6c9f982006-08-04 23:59:21 +0000805- Bug #1530559, struct.pack raises TypeError where it used to convert.

859
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000860- _PyWeakref_GetWeakrefCount() now returns a Py_ssize_t; it previously
Neal Norwitzc5e060d2006-08-02 06:14:22 +0000861 returned a long (see PEP 353).
862
Neal Norwitzf71ec5a2006-07-30 06:57:04 +0000863- Bug #1515471: string.replace() accepts character buffers again.
864
Neal Norwitz07aadb12006-07-30 06:55:48 +0000865- Add PyErr_WarnEx() so C code can pass the stacklevel to warnings.warn().

871
Phillip J. Ebyf7575d02006-07-28 21:12:07 +0000872- Bug #1529871: The speed enhancement patch #921466 broke Python's compliance
873 with PEP 302. This was fixed by adding an ``imp.NullImporter`` type that is
874 used in ``sys.path_importer_cache`` to cache non-directory paths and avoid
875 excessive filesystem operations during imports.
876
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +0000877- Bug #1521947: When checking for overflow, ``PyOS_strtol()`` used some
878 operations on signed longs that are formally undefined by C.
879 Unfortunately, at least one compiler now cares about that, so complicated

Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000898 again. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc magic number.
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000899 This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5b3 will be regenerated.

Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000901- Bug #1524317: Compiling Python ``--without-threads`` failed.
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000902 The Python core compiles again, and, in a build without threads, the
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000903 new ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dictionary with one entry,

913 for stream decoder, but final=True for the decode function.
914
Georg Brandl07fec3a2006-08-01 18:49:24 +0000915- os.urandom no longer masks unrelated exceptions like SystemExit or

Georg Brandle34ac7c2006-07-30 11:07:23 +0000921- Bug #1002398: The documentation for os.path.sameopenfile now correctly
922 refers to file descriptors, not file objects.
923
Tim Petersc10c9d02006-09-05 02:18:09 +0000924- The renaming of the xml package to xmlcore, and the import hackery done
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000925 to make it appear at both names, has been removed. Bug #1511497,

927
Georg Brandledd9b0d2006-07-29 09:33:26 +0000928- Bug #1441397: The compiler module now recognizes module and function
929 docstrings correctly as it did in Python 2.4.
930
Tim Peters6f681472006-07-27 23:44:37 +0000931- Bug #1529297: The rewrite of doctest for Python 2.4 unintentionally
932 lost that tests are sorted by name before being run. This rarely
933 matters for well-written tests, but can create baffling symptoms if
934 side effects from one test to the next affect outcomes. ``DocTestFinder``
935 has been changed to sort the list of tests it returns.
936
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000937- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0, and is now kept

Brett Cannoncaebe222006-07-18 04:41:36 +0000957- Bug #1520914: Change time.strftime() to accept a zero for any position in its
958 argument tuple. For arguments where zero is illegal, the value is forced to
959 the minimum value that is correct. This is to support an undocumented but
960 common way people used to fill in inconsequential information in the time
961 tuple pre-2.4.
962
Bob Ippolito5ea4bf12006-07-15 16:53:15 +0000963- Patch #1220874: Update the binhex module for Mach-O.
964
Barry Warsawb110bad2006-07-21 14:51:07 +0000965- The email package has improved RFC 2231 support, specifically for
966 recognizing the difference between encoded (name*0*=<blah>) and non-encoded
967 (name*0=<blah>) parameter continuations. This may change the types of
968 values returned from email.message.Message.get_param() and friends.
969 Specifically in some cases where non-encoded continuations were used,
970 get_param() used to return a 3-tuple of (None, None, string) whereas now it
971 will just return the string (since non-encoded continuations don't have
972 charset and language parts).
973
974 Also, whereas % values were decoded in all parameter continuations, they are
975 now only decoded in encoded parameter parts.
976
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +0000977- Bug #1517990: IDLE keybindings on MacOS X now work correctly

980 path browser, class browser or debugger is the frontmost window on MacOS X
981
Barry Warsaw00decd72006-07-27 23:43:15 +0000982- Patch #1520294: Support for getset and member descriptors in types.py,
983 inspect.py, and pydoc.py. Specifically, this allows for querying the type
984 of an object against these built-in types and more importantly, for getting
985 their docstrings printed in the interactive interpreter's help() function.

1008 arrays, without the need to check the array size before.
1009
Thomas Heller6e1ad2e2006-07-13 17:05:13 +00001010- Bug #1521375: When the code in ctypes.util.find_library was

1013
Thomas Heller47d7a062006-07-12 08:43:47 +00001014- Bug #1467450: On Mac OS X 10.3, RTLD_GLOBAL is now used as the

Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +00001016
Thomas Hellerb4dc2ef2006-07-13 09:53:47 +00001017- Because of a misspelled preprocessor symbol, ctypes was always

1022 sleepycat API allows.
1023
Matt Flemingec926502006-07-28 11:27:27 +00001024- Bug #1526460: Fix socketmodule compile on NetBSD as it has a different

1030- Bug #1501330: Change test_ossaudiodev to be much more tolerant in terms of
1031 how long the test file should take to play. Now accepts taking 2.93 secs
1032 (exact time) +/- 10% instead of the hard-coded 3.1 sec.
1033
Georg Brandl4793aa32006-07-28 18:31:39 +00001034- Patch #1529686: The standard tests ``test_defaultdict``, ``test_iterlen``,

1050 set to the directory that contains the script instead of the user home
Tim Peters4643c2f2006-08-10 22:45:34 +00001051 directory. That latter was an implementation accident and not what users

1065
Neil Schemenauer0e07b602006-07-09 16:16:34 +00001066- Bug #1501934: The scope of global variables that are locally assigned
1067 using augmented assignment is now correctly determined.
1068
Martin v. Löwisd5cfa542006-07-03 13:47:40 +00001069- Bug #927248: Recursive method-wrapper objects can now safely
1070 be released.

Martin v. Löwisfcfff0a2006-07-03 12:19:50 +00001072- Bug #1417699: Reject locale-specific decimal point in float()
1073 and atof().
1074
Hye-Shik Change6a1cb92006-06-23 21:16:18 +00001075- Bug #1511381: codec_getstreamcodec() in codec.c is corrected to

1077 the parser to take a codec from cjkcodecs again.
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +00001078
Neal Norwitzfb48afa2006-07-08 05:31:37 +00001079- Bug #1519018: 'as' is now validated properly in import statements.
1080
Neal Norwitz28746ab2006-07-09 22:14:42 +00001081- On 64 bit systems, int literals that use less than 64 bits are
1082 now ints rather than longs.
1083
Neal Norwitzed657552006-07-10 00:04:44 +00001084- Bug #1512814, Fix incorrect lineno's when code at module scope
1085 started after line 256.
1086
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +00001087- New function ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dict mapping thread
1088 id to topmost thread stack frame. This is for expert use, and is
1089 especially useful for debugging application deadlocks. The functionality
1090 was previously available in Fazal Majid's ``threadframe`` extension
1091 module, but it wasn't possible to do this in a wholly threadsafe way from
1092 an extension.

1101
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +00001102- Bug #1508010: msvccompiler now requires the DISTUTILS_USE_SDK
Martin v. Löwis8d656812006-07-10 07:23:48 +00001103 environment variable to be set in order to the SDK environment
1104 for finding the compiler, include files, etc.

1109
Thomas Woutersadd19112006-07-05 11:03:49 +00001110- string.Template() now correctly handles tuple-values. Previously,
1111 multi-value tuples would raise an exception and single-value tuples would
1112 be treated as the value they contain, instead.
1113
Martin v. Löwisede77f52006-07-03 13:01:35 +00001114- Bug #822974: Honor timeout in telnetlib.{expect,read_until}

1122
Martin v. Löwis4c4300d2006-07-03 10:05:30 +00001123- Reimplement turtle.circle using a polyline, to allow correct

1130 socket again, which then gets closed as it becomes unreferenced.
1131
Fred Drake10497c82006-06-29 02:57:48 +00001132- Bug #1504333: Make sgmllib support angle brackets in quoted
1133 attribute values.

1136 sgmllib ('[' and ']' were not accepted).
1137
Georg Brandl1be63af2006-06-28 20:23:25 +00001138- Fix a bug in the turtle module's end_fill function.
1139
Brett Cannon53ab5b72006-06-22 16:49:14 +00001140- Bug #1510580: The 'warnings' module improperly required that a Warning
1141 category be either a types.ClassType and a subclass of Warning. The proper
1142 check is just that it is a subclass with Warning as the documentation states.
1143
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +00001144- The compiler module now correctly compiles the new try-except-finally

1146
Neal Norwitz60373cd2006-06-22 06:30:50 +00001147- The wsgiref package is now installed properly on Unix.
1148
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +00001149- A bug was fixed in logging.config.fileConfig() which caused a crash on
1150 shutdown when fileConfig() was called multiple times.
1151
Gerhard Häring762fbd32006-07-02 17:48:30 +00001152- The sqlite3 module did cut off data from the SQLite database at the first
1153 null character before sending it to a custom converter. This has been fixed
1154 now.
1155
Neal Norwitz0f8b31a2006-06-28 06:28:31 +00001156Extension Modules
1157-----------------
1158
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +00001159- #1494314: Fix a regression with high-numbered sockets in 2.4.3. This
1160 means that select() on sockets > FD_SETSIZE (typically 1024) work again.
1161 The patch makes sockets use poll() internally where available.
Anthony Baxter93ab5fa2006-07-11 02:04:09 +00001162
Thomas Hellerb9cb84f2006-07-10 11:17:37 +00001163- Assigning None to pointer type fields in ctypes structures possible
1164 overwrote the wrong fields, this is fixed now.
1165
1166- Fixed a segfault in _ctypes when ctypes.wintypes were imported
1167 on non-Windows platforms.
1168
1169- Bug #1518190: The ctypes.c_void_p constructor now accepts any
1170 integer or long, without range checking.
1171
1172- Patch #1517790: It is now possible to use custom objects in the ctypes
1173 foreign function argtypes sequence as long as they provide a from_param
1174 method, no longer is it required that the object is a ctypes type.
1175
1176- The '_ctypes' extension module now works when Python is configured
1177 with the --without-threads option.
1178
Martin v. Löwisee1e06d2006-07-02 18:44:00 +00001179- Bug #1513646: os.access on Windows now correctly determines write

1183 a KeyboardInterrupt.
1184
Neal Norwitza12aa882006-07-06 06:45:08 +00001185- Bug #1296433: parsing XML with a non-default encoding and

Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +00001195- 'configure' now detects the zlib library the same way as distutils.
Thomas Woutersfc34f6c2006-07-06 10:48:28 +00001196 Previously, the slight difference could cause compilation errors of the
1197 'zlib' module on systems with more than one version of zlib.
1198
Martin v. Löwis4cbd05c2006-07-06 07:05:21 +00001199- The MSI compileall step was fixed to also support a TARGETDIR

1230Core and builtins
1231-----------------
1232
Georg Brandla56b9152006-06-19 06:35:54 +00001233- Patch #1507676: Error messages returned by invalid abstract object operations
1234 (such as iterating over an integer) have been improved and now include the
1235 type of the offending object to help with debugging.
1236
Brett Cannonea3912b2006-06-13 21:46:41 +00001237- Bug #992017: A classic class that defined a __coerce__() method that returned
1238 its arguments swapped would infinitely recurse and segfault the interpreter.
1239
Neal Norwitz909eb122006-06-12 02:13:21 +00001240- Fix the socket tests so they can be run concurrently.
1241
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +00001242- Removed 5 integers from C frame objects (PyFrameObject).
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +00001243 f_nlocals, f_ncells, f_nfreevars, f_stack_size, f_restricted.
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +00001244
Brett Cannon22565aa2006-06-09 22:31:23 +00001245- Bug #532646: object.__call__() will continue looking for the __call__
1246 attribute on objects until one without one is found. This leads to recursion
1247 when you take a class and set its __call__ attribute to an instance of the
1248 class. Originally fixed for classic classes, but this fix is for new-style.
1249 Removes the infinite_rec_3 crasher.
1250
Georg Brandl24250812006-06-09 18:45:48 +00001251- The string and unicode methods startswith() and endswith() now accept
1252 a tuple of prefixes/suffixes to look for. Implements RFE #1491485.
1253
Brett Cannonde3b0522006-06-08 17:00:45 +00001254- Buffer objects, at the C level, never used the char buffer
1255 implementation even when the char buffer for the wrapped object was
1256 explicitly requested (originally returned the read or write buffer).
1257 Now a TypeError is raised if the char buffer is not present but is
1258 requested.
1259
Georg Brandlddbaa662006-06-04 21:56:52 +00001260- Patch #1346214: Statements like "if 0: suite" are now again optimized
1261 away like they were in Python 2.4.
1262
Georg Brandlb7c8f542006-05-27 12:30:25 +00001263- Builtin exceptions are now full-blown new-style classes instead of
1264 instances pretending to be classes, which speeds up exception handling
1265 by about 80% in comparison to 2.5a2.
1266
Martin v. Löwisd004fc82006-05-27 08:36:52 +00001267- Patch #1494554: Update unicodedata.numeric and unicode.isnumeric to
1268 Unicode 4.1.
1269
Georg Brandlf4ef1162006-05-26 18:03:31 +00001270- Patch #921466: sys.path_importer_cache is now used to cache valid and
1271 invalid file paths for the built-in import machinery which leads to
1272 fewer open calls on startup.
1273
Tim Peters696cf432006-05-24 21:10:40 +00001274- Patch #1442927: ``long(str, base)`` is now up to 6x faster for non-power-
1275 of-2 bases. The largest speedup is for inputs with about 1000 decimal
1276 digits. Conversion from non-power-of-2 bases remains quadratic-time in
1277 the number of input digits (it was and remains linear-time for bases
1278 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32).
1279
Tim Petersb713ec22006-05-23 18:45:30 +00001280- Bug #1334662: ``int(string, base)`` could deliver a wrong answer
1281 when ``base`` was not 2, 4, 8, 10, 16 or 32, and ``string`` represented
1282 an integer close to ``sys.maxint``. This was repaired by patch
1283 #1335972, which also gives a nice speedup.
1284
Richard Jonescebbefc2006-05-23 18:28:17 +00001285- Patch #1337051: reduced size of frame objects.
1286
1287- PyErr_NewException now accepts a tuple of base classes as its
1288 "base" parameter.
1289
Richard Jones7c88dcc2006-05-23 10:37:38 +00001290- Patch #876206: function call speedup by retaining allocated frame
1291 objects.
1292
Georg Brandl7b90e162006-05-18 07:01:27 +00001293- Bug #1462152: file() now checks more thoroughly for invalid mode
1294 strings and removes a possible "U" before passing the mode to the
1295 C library function.
1296
Neal Norwitz1004a532006-05-15 07:17:23 +00001297- Patch #1488312, Fix memory alignment problem on SPARC in unicode
1298
Neal Norwitz373f0a72006-05-15 07:04:36 +00001299- Bug #1487966: Fix SystemError with conditional expression in assignment
1300
Martin v. Löwis879768d2006-05-11 13:28:43 +00001301- WindowsError now has two error code attributes: errno, which carries
1302 the error values from errno.h, and winerror, which carries the error
1303 values from winerror.h. Previous versions put the winerror.h values
1304 (from GetLastError()) into the errno attribute.
1305
Martin v. Löwis77736712006-05-04 05:51:03 +00001306- Patch #1475845: Raise IndentationError for unexpected indent.
1307
Neal Norwitzc4edb0e2006-05-02 04:43:14 +00001308- Patch #1479181: split open() and file() from being aliases for each other.
1309
Tim Peters44bd9862006-06-01 13:49:23 +00001310- Patch #1497053 & bug #1275608: Exceptions occurring in ``__eq__()``
1311 methods were always silently ignored by dictionaries when comparing keys.
1312 They are now passed through (except when using the C API function
1313 ``PyDict_GetItem()``, whose semantics did not change).
1314
1315- Bug #1456209: In some obscure cases it was possible for a class with a
1316 custom ``__eq__()`` method to confuse dict internals when class instances
1317 were used as a dict's keys and the ``__eq__()`` method mutated the dict.
1318 No, you don't have any code that did this ;-)

1325- Patch #1462338: Upgrade pyexpat to expat 2.0.0
1326
Brett Cannon6ee7d012006-06-08 16:23:04 +00001327- Change binascii.hexlify to accept a read-only buffer instead of only a char
1328 buffer and actually follow its documentation.
1329
Hye-Shik Chang58ce5bc2006-06-05 00:59:54 +00001330- Fixed a potentially invalid memory access of CJKCodecs' shift-jis decoder.
1331
Nick Coghlanc649ec52006-05-29 12:43:05 +00001332- Patch #1478788 (modified version): The functional extension module has
1333 been renamed to _functools and a functools Python wrapper module added.
1334 This provides a home for additional function related utilities that are
1335 not specifically about functional programming. See PEP 309.
1336
Bob Ippolito7ccc95a2006-05-23 19:11:34 +00001337- Patch #1493701: performance enhancements for struct module.

1343
Andrew MacIntyre92913322006-06-13 15:04:24 +00001344- Patch #1454481: thread stack size is now tunable at runtime for thread

1346
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00001347- On Win32, os.listdir now supports arbitrarily-long Unicode path names
1348 (up to the system limit of 32K characters).
1349
1350- Use Win32 API to implement os.{access,chdir,chmod,mkdir,remove,rename,rmdir,utime}.
1351 As a result, these functions now raise WindowsError instead of OSError.
1352
Tim Peters7a822da2006-05-25 21:50:17 +00001353- ``time.clock()`` on Win64 should use the high-performance Windows
1354 ``QueryPerformanceCounter()`` now (as was already the case on 32-bit
1355 Windows platforms).
1356
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00001357- Calling Tk_Init twice is refused if the first call failed as that
1358 may deadlock.
1359
Gregory P. Smith0459e4d2006-06-05 02:02:25 +00001360- bsddb: added the DB_ARCH_REMOVE flag and fixed db.DBEnv.log_archive() to
1361 accept it without potentially using an uninitialized pointer.
1362
1363- bsddb: added support for the DBEnv.log_stat() and DBEnv.lsn_reset() methods
1364 assuming BerkeleyDB >= 4.0 and 4.4 respectively. [pybsddb project SF

1372
Gregory P. Smith3c228b12006-06-05 23:59:37 +00001373- bsddb: the __len__ method of a DB object has been fixed to return correct
1374 results. It could previously incorrectly return 0 in some cases.
1375 Fixes SF bug 1493322 (pybsddb bug 1184012).
1376
Gregory P. Smithff7d9912006-06-08 05:17:08 +00001377- bsddb: the bsddb.dbtables Modify method now raises the proper error and
1378 aborts the db transaction safely when a modifier callback fails.
1379 Fixes SF python patch/bug #1408584.
1380
Gregory P. Smith506f7b52006-06-15 08:52:32 +00001381- bsddb: multithreaded DB access using the simple bsddb module interface
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +00001382 now works reliably. It has been updated to use automatic BerkeleyDB

1414 double-byte encodings.
1415
Tim Peters43898b42006-06-14 04:09:25 +00001416- ``difflib``'s ``SequenceMatcher.get_matching_blocks()`` was changed to
1417 guarantee that adjacent triples in the return list always describe
1418 non-adjacent blocks. Previously, a pair of matching blocks could end
1419 up being described by multiple adjacent triples that formed a partition
1420 of the matching pair.
1421
Greg Ward0e0c9f42006-06-11 16:24:11 +00001422- Bug #1498146: fix optparse to handle Unicode strings in option help,

1431
Nick Coghlan676725d2006-06-08 13:54:49 +00001432- The functions update_wrapper() and wraps() have been added to the functools
1433 module. These make it easier to copy relevant metadata from the original
1434 function when writing wrapper functions.

Martin v. Löwis3f767792006-06-04 19:36:28 +00001439- Patch #1359618: Speed up charmap encoder by using a trie structure
1440 for lookup.
1441
Tim Petersd609b1a2006-06-02 23:22:51 +00001442- The functions in the ``pprint`` module now sort dictionaries by key
1443 before computing the display. Before 2.5, ``pprint`` sorted a dictionary
1444 if and only if its display required more than one line, although that
1445 wasn't documented. The new behavior increases predictability; e.g.,
1446 using ``pprint.pprint(a_dict)`` in a doctest is now reliable.
1447
Georg Brandlfd9a4b12006-05-29 20:57:01 +00001448- Patch #1497027: try HTTP digest auth before basic auth in urllib2

1466 tarfiles.
1467
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00001468- Patch #721464: pdb.Pdb instances can now be given explicit stdin and

1473 a couple of issues, notably handling of long file names using the
1474 GNU LONGNAME extension.
1475
1476- Patch #1478292. ``doctest.register_optionflag(name)`` shouldn't create a
1477 new flag when ``name`` is already the name of an option flag.
1478
1479- Bug #1385040: don't allow "def foo(a=1, b): pass" in the compiler
1480 package.
1481

1520
1521*Release date: 27-APR-2006*
1522
1523Core and builtins
1524-----------------
1525
Thomas Heller1b046642006-04-18 18:51:06 +00001526- Bug #1465834: 'bdist_wininst preinstall script support' was fixed
1527 by converting these apis from macros into exported functions again:
1528
1529 PyParser_SimpleParseFile PyParser_SimpleParseString PyRun_AnyFile
1530 PyRun_AnyFileEx PyRun_AnyFileFlags PyRun_File PyRun_FileEx
1531 PyRun_FileFlags PyRun_InteractiveLoop PyRun_InteractiveOne
1532 PyRun_SimpleFile PyRun_SimpleFileEx PyRun_SimpleString
1533 PyRun_String Py_CompileString
1534
Martin v. Löwis45294a92006-04-18 06:24:08 +00001535- Under COUNT_ALLOCS, types are not necessarily immortal anymore.
1536
Martin v. Löwis19ab6c92006-04-16 18:55:50 +00001537- All uses of PyStructSequence_InitType have been changed to initialize
1538 the type objects only once, even if the interpreter is initialized
1539 multiple times.
1540
Neal Norwitz61546162006-04-14 05:20:28 +00001541- Bug #1454485, array.array('u') could crash the interpreter. This was
1542 due to PyArgs_ParseTuple(args, 'u#', ...) trying to convert buffers (strings)
1543 to unicode when it didn't make sense. 'u#' now requires a unicode string.
1544
1545- Py_UNICODE is unsigned. It was always documented as unsigned, but
1546 due to a bug had a signed value in previous versions.
1547
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001548- Patch #837242: ``id()`` of any Python object always gives a positive
1549 number now, which might be a long integer. ``PyLong_FromVoidPtr`` and
1550 ``PyLong_AsVoidPtr`` have been changed accordingly. Note that it has
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001551 never been correct to implement a ``__hash()__`` method that returns the
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001552 ``id()`` of an object:
Martin v. Löwis0bc2ab92006-04-10 20:28:17 +00001553
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001554 def __hash__(self):
1555 return id(self) # WRONG
1556
1557 because a hash result must be a (short) Python int but it was always
1558 possible for ``id()`` to return a Python long. However, because ``id()``
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001559 could return negative values before, on a 32-bit box an ``id()`` result
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001560 was always usable as a hash value before this patch. That's no longer
1561 necessarily so.
1562
1563- Python on OS X 10.3 and above now uses dlopen() (via dynload_shlib.c)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001564 to load extension modules and now provides the dl module. As a result,
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001565 sys.setdlopenflags() now works correctly on these systems. (SF patch
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001566 #1454844)
1567
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001568- Patch #1463867: enhanced garbage collection to allow cleanup of cycles
1569 involving generators that have paused outside of any ``try`` or ``with``
1570 blocks. (In 2.5a1, a paused generator that was part of a reference
1571 cycle could not be garbage collected, regardless of whether it was
1572 paused in a ``try`` or ``with`` block.)

1579
Georg Brandlbbfe4fa2006-04-11 06:47:43 +00001580- Bug #1467952: os.listdir() now correctly raises an error if readdir()
1581 fails with an error condition.
1582
Gregory P. Smith3adc4aa2006-04-13 19:19:01 +00001583- Fixed bsddb.db.DBError derived exceptions so they can be unpickled.

1585- Bug #1117761: bsddb.*open() no longer raises an exception when using
1586 the cachesize parameter.
1587
1588- Bug #1149413: bsddb.*open() no longer raises an exception when using
1589 a temporary db (file=None) with the 'n' flag to truncate on open.
1590
1591- Bug #1332852: bsddb module minimum BerkeleyDB version raised to 3.3
1592 as older versions cause excessive test failures.
Gregory P. Smith7f5b6f42006-04-08 07:10:51 +00001593
Armin Rigoa9017c32006-04-19 11:50:27 +00001594- Patch #1062014: AF_UNIX sockets under Linux have a special
1595 abstract namespace that is now fully supported.

1602 abusing errno.
1603
Tim Peters711bf302006-04-25 03:31:36 +00001604- Patch #1475231: ``doctest`` has a new ``SKIP`` option, which causes
1605 a doctest to be skipped (the code is not run, and the expected output
1606 or exception is ignored).
1607
Nick Coghlanda2268f2006-04-24 04:37:15 +00001608- Fixed contextlib.nested to cope with exceptions being raised and
1609 caught inside exit handlers.
1610
Greg Wardab05edc2006-04-23 03:47:58 +00001611- Updated optparse module to Optik 1.5.1 (allow numeric constants in
1612 hex, octal, or binary; add ``append_const`` action; keep going if
1613 gettext cannot be imported; added ``OptionParser.destroy()`` method;
1614 added ``epilog`` for better help generation).
1615
Tim Peters21fbd572006-04-21 21:18:10 +00001616- Bug #1473760: ``tempfile.TemporaryFile()`` could hang on Windows, when
1617 called from a thread spawned as a side effect of importing a module.
1618
Phillip J. Eby17a35f92006-04-18 16:45:14 +00001619- The pydoc module now supports documenting packages contained in
1620 .zip or .egg files.
1621
1622- The pkgutil module now has several new utility functions, such
1623 as ``walk_packages()`` to support working with packages that are either
1624 in the filesystem or zip files.
1625
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001626- The mailbox module can now modify and delete messages from

1628 K. Johnson for writing the code, and to the 2005 Google Summer of
1629 Code for funding his work.
Phillip J. Eby17a35f92006-04-18 16:45:14 +00001630

1687
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001688- The test_contextlib test in 2.5a1 wasn't actually run unless you ran
1689 it separately and by hand. It also wasn't cleaning up its changes to
1690 the current Decimal context.
1691
Thomas Woutersabd08882006-04-26 15:53:30 +00001692- regrtest.py now has a -M option to run tests that test the new limits of
1693 containers, on 64-bit architectures. Running these tests is only sensible
1694 on 64-bit machines with more than two gigabytes of memory. The argument
1695 passed is the maximum amount of memory for the tests to use.

1723
Nick Coghlan43832302006-04-23 17:04:07 +00001724- PEP 338: -m command line switch now delegates to runpy.run_module
1725 allowing it to support modules in packages and zipfiles
1726
Martin v. Löwisc661b882006-04-20 04:54:23 +00001727- On Windows, .DLL is not an accepted file name extension for
1728 extension modules anymore; extensions are only found if they
1729 end in .PYD.
1730
Martin v. Löwisea62d252006-04-03 10:56:49 +00001731- Bug #1421664: sys.stderr.encoding is now set to the same value as
1732 sys.stdout.encoding.
1733
Neal Norwitz92e212f2006-04-03 04:48:37 +00001734- __import__ accepts keyword arguments.
1735
Georg Brandlccadf842006-03-31 18:54:53 +00001736- Patch #1460496: round() now accepts keyword arguments.
1737
Anthony Baxter262c00a2006-03-30 10:53:17 +00001738- Fixed bug #1459029 - unicode reprs were double-escaped.
1739
Hye-Shik Changd478f342006-03-23 12:32:36 +00001740- Patch #1396919: The system scope threads are reenabled on FreeBSD
1741 5.4 and later versions.
1742
Neal Norwitze98ccf62006-03-23 05:39:47 +00001743- Bug #1115379: Compiling a Unicode string with an encoding declaration
1744 now gives a SyntaxError.
1745
Georg Brandlabd1ff82006-03-18 07:59:59 +00001746- Previously, Python code had no easy way to access the contents of a
1747 cell object. Now, a ``cell_contents`` attribute has been added
1748 (closes patch #1170323).
1749
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001750- Patch #1123430: Python's small-object allocator now returns an arena to
1751 the system ``free()`` when all memory within an arena becomes unused
1752 again. Prior to Python 2.5, arenas (256KB chunks of memory) were never
1753 freed. Some applications will see a drop in virtual memory size now,
1754 especially long-running applications that, from time to time, temporarily
1755 use a large number of small objects. Note that when Python returns an
1756 arena to the platform C's ``free()``, there's no guarantee that the
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001757 platform C library will in turn return that memory to the operating system.
1758 The effect of the patch is to stop making that impossible, and in tests it
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001759 appears to be effective at least on Microsoft C and gcc-based systems.
1760 Thanks to Evan Jones for hard work and patience.
1761
Georg Brandl533ff6f2006-03-08 18:09:27 +00001762- Patch #1434038: property() now uses the getter's docstring if there is
1763 no "doc" argument given. This makes it possible to legitimately use
1764 property() as a decorator to produce a read-only property.
1765
Guido van Rossum9aa37ab2006-03-07 18:54:08 +00001766- PEP 357, patch 1436368: add an __index__ method to int/long and a matching
1767 nb_index slot to the PyNumberMethods struct. The slot is consulted instead
1768 of requiring an int or long in slicing and a few other contexts, enabling
1769 other objects (e.g. Numeric Python's integers) to be used as slice indices.
1770
Neal Norwitz995acdf2006-03-07 05:01:00 +00001771- Fixed various bugs reported by Coverity's Prevent tool.
1772
Brett Cannonbf364092006-03-01 04:25:17 +00001773- PEP 352, patch #1104669: Make exceptions new-style objects. Introduced the
1774 new exception base class, BaseException, which has a new message attribute.
1775 KeyboardInterrupt and SystemExit to directly inherit from BaseException now.
1776 Raising a string exception now raises a DeprecationWarning.
1777
Thomas Woutersfb609f42006-02-28 16:37:25 +00001778- Patch #1438387, PEP 328: relative and absolute imports. Imports can now be
1779 explicitly relative, using 'from .module import name' to mean 'from the same
1780 package as this module is in. Imports without dots still default to the
1781 old relative-then-absolute, unless 'from __future__ import
1782 absolute_import' is used.
1783
Brett Cannona7446e32006-02-27 23:39:10 +00001784- Properly check if 'warnings' raises an exception (usually when a filter set
1785 to "error" is triggered) when raising a warning for raising string
1786 exceptions.
1787
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001788- CO_GENERATOR_ALLOWED is no longer defined. This behavior is the default.

1794 - The copy module now "copies" function objects (as atomic objects).
1795 - dict.__getitem__ now looks for a __missing__ hook before raising
1796 KeyError.
1797
Tim Peters84ef21c2006-02-28 20:39:06 +00001798- PEP 343: with statement implemented. Needs ``from __future__ import
1799 with_statement``. Use of 'with' as a variable will generate a warning.
1800 Use of 'as' as a variable will also generate a warning (unless it's
Neal Norwitz055ec242006-02-28 20:06:49 +00001801 part of an import statement).
Guido van Rossum1a5e21e2006-02-28 21:57:43 +00001802 The following objects have __context__ methods:
1803 - The built-in file type.
1804 - The thread.LockType type.
1805 - The following types defined by the threading module:
1806 Lock, RLock, Condition, Semaphore, BoundedSemaphore.

Marc-André Lemburgfe4b34c2006-02-19 15:22:22 +00001809- Fix the encodings package codec search function to only search
1810 inside its own package. Fixes problem reported in patch #1433198.
1811
1812 Note: Codec packages should implement and register their own
1813 codec search function. PEP 100 has the details.
1814
Tim Peters9ea89d22006-06-04 03:26:02 +00001815- PEP 353: Using ``Py_ssize_t`` as the index type.
1816
1817- ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` builds now add ``4*sizeof(size_t)`` bytes of debugging
1818 info to each allocated block, since the ``Py_ssize_t`` changes (PEP 353)
1819 now allow Python to make use of memory blocks exceeding 2**32 bytes for
1820 some purposes on 64-bit boxes. A ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` build was limited
1821 to 4-byte allocations before.
Martin v. Löwis18e16552006-02-15 17:27:45 +00001822

1824 This is how string objects work. u'%f' could use , instead of .
1825 for the decimal point. Now both strings and unicode always use periods.
1826
Neal Norwitz671b9e32006-01-09 07:07:12 +00001827- Bug #1244610, #1392915, fix build problem on OpenBSD 3.7 and 3.8.

1838
Neal Norwitze7214a12005-12-18 05:03:17 +00001839- Support for converting hex strings to floats no longer works.
1840 This was not portable. float('0x3') now raises a ValueError.
1841
Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001842- Patch #1382163: Expose Subversion revision number to Python. New C API

1857
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001858- SF Bug #1350188, "setdlopenflags" leads to crash upon "import"
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001859 It was possible for dlerror() to return a NULL pointer, so
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001860 it will now use a default error message in this case.
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001861
Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00001862- Replaced most Unicode charmap codecs with new ones using the
1863 new Unicode translate string feature in the builtin charmap
1864 codec; the codecs were created from the mapping tables available
1865 at ftp.unicode.org and contain a few updates (e.g. the Mac OS
1866 encodings now include a mapping for the Apple logo)
1867
Tim Peterse3547fd2005-12-16 23:13:57 +00001868- Added a few more codecs for Mac OS encodings

1887
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001888- All iterators now have a Boolean value of True. Formerly, some iterators
Raymond Hettinger6b27cda2005-09-24 21:23:05 +00001889 supported a __len__() method which evaluated to False when the iterator
1890 was empty.
1891
Guido van Rossum630db602005-09-20 18:49:54 +00001892- On 64-bit platforms, when __len__() returns a value that cannot be
1893 represented as a C int, raise OverflowError.
1894
Skip Montanarof8948ca2005-09-19 03:54:46 +00001895- test__locale is skipped on OS X < 10.4 (only partial locale support is
Walter Dörwald6611a8b2005-10-09 19:28:35 +00001896 present).
Skip Montanarof8948ca2005-09-19 03:54:46 +00001897

1899 codes.
1900
Guido van Rossum8ee3e5a2005-09-14 18:09:42 +00001901- Changes donated by Elemental Security to make it work on AIX 5.3
1902 with IBM's 64-bit compiler (SF patch #1284289). This also closes SF
1903 bug #105470: test_pwd fails on 64bit system (Opteron).
1904
Guido van Rossum539c6622005-09-14 17:49:54 +00001905- Changes donated by Elemental Security to make it work on HP-UX 11 on
1906 Itanium2 with HP's 64-bit compiler (SF patch #1225212).
1907
Georg Brandl4550b8d2005-08-26 06:43:52 +00001908- Disallow keyword arguments for type constructors that don't use them
Georg Brandl02c42872005-08-26 06:42:30 +00001909 (fixes bug #1119418).
1910
Martin v. Löwisd35edda2005-08-24 08:39:24 +00001911- Forward UnicodeDecodeError into SyntaxError for source encoding errors.
1912
Barry Warsawe2eca0b2005-08-15 18:14:19 +00001913- SF bug #900092: When tracing (e.g. for hotshot), restore 'return' events for
1914 exceptions that cause a function to exit.
1915
Raymond Hettinger9f1a6792005-07-31 01:16:36 +00001916- The implementation of set() and frozenset() was revised to use its
1917 own internal data structure. Memory consumption is reduced by 1/3
1918 and there are modest speed-ups as well. The API is unchanged.
1919
Tim Petersde7990b2005-07-17 23:45:23 +00001920- SF bug #1238681: freed pointer is used in longobject.c:long_pow().
1921
Michael W. Hudson0edc7a02005-07-12 10:21:19 +00001922- SF bug #1229429: PyObject_CallMethod failed to decrement some
1923 reference counts in some error exit cases.
1924
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001925- SF bug #1185883: Python's small-object memory allocator took over
1926 a block managed by the platform C library whenever a realloc specified
1927 a small new size. However, there's no portable way to know then how
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001928 much of the address space following the pointer is valid, so there's no
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001929 portable way to copy data from the C-managed block into Python's
1930 small-object space without risking a memory fault. Python's small-object
1931 realloc now leaves such blocks under the control of the platform C
1932 realloc.
1933
Michael W. Hudsonb8963812005-07-05 15:21:58 +00001934- SF bug #1232517: An overflow error was not detected properly when
1935 attempting to convert a large float to an int in os.utime().
1936
Raymond Hettinger3296e692005-06-29 23:29:56 +00001937- SF bug #1224347: hex longs now print with lowercase letters just
1938 like their int counterparts.
1939
Michael W. Hudson188d4362005-06-20 16:52:57 +00001940- SF bug #1163563: the original fix for bug #1010677 ("thread Module
1941 Breaks PyGILState_Ensure()") broke badly in the case of multiple
1942 interpreter states; back out that fix and do a better job (see
1943 http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-dev/2005-June/054258.html
1944 for a longer write-up of the problem).
1945
Michael W. Hudsondf888462005-06-03 14:41:55 +00001946- SF patch #1180995: marshal now uses a binary format by default when
1947 serializing floats.
1948
Michael W. Hudsonda85a902005-06-01 11:34:22 +00001949- SF patch #1181301: on platforms that appear to use IEEE 754 floats,
1950 the routines that promise to produce IEEE 754 binary representations
1951 of floats now simply copy bytes around.
1952
Skip Montanarobbf12ba2005-05-20 03:07:06 +00001953- bug #967182: disallow opening files with 'wU' or 'aU' as specified by PEP
1954 278.
1955
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001956- patch #1109424: int, long, float, complex, and unicode now check for the
1957 proper magic slot for type conversions when subclassed. Previously the
1958 magic slot was ignored during conversion. Semantics now match the way
1959 subclasses of str always behaved. int/long/float, conversion of an instance
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00001960 to the base class has been moved to the proper nb_* magic slot and out of
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001961 PyNumber_*().
Neal Norwitzcfba5f82006-04-25 05:05:03 +00001962 Thanks Walter Drwald.
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001963
Barry Warsawc8d907c2005-04-19 23:43:40 +00001964- Descriptors defined in C with a PyGetSetDef structure, where the setter is
1965 NULL, now raise an AttributeError when attempting to set or delete the
1966 attribute. Previously a TypeError was raised, but this was inconsistent
1967 with the equivalent pure-Python implementation.
1968
Michael W. Hudson774479c2005-04-18 08:46:17 +00001969- It is now safe to call PyGILState_Release() before
1970 PyEval_InitThreads() (note that if there is reason to believe there
1971 are multiple threads around you still must call PyEval_InitThreads()
1972 before using the Python API; this fix is for extension modules that
1973 have no way of knowing if Python is multi-threaded yet).
1974
Michael W. Hudsone3afc592005-04-07 10:11:19 +00001975- Typing Ctrl-C whilst raw_input() was waiting in a build with threads
1976 disabled caused a crash.
1977
Michael W. Hudsonb330adf2005-03-31 09:35:44 +00001978- Bug #1165306: instancemethod_new allowed the creation of a method
1979 with im_class == im_self == NULL, which caused a crash when called.
1980
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001981- Move exception finalisation later in the shutdown process - this
Anthony Baxter12b6f6c2005-03-29 13:36:16 +00001982 fixes the crash seen in bug #1165761
1983
Raymond Hettinger96229b12005-03-11 06:49:40 +00001984- Added two new builtins, any() and all().
1985
Brett Cannon409d8f22005-03-05 06:47:57 +00001986- Defining a class with empty parentheses is now allowed
Brett Cannonf4189912005-04-09 02:30:16 +00001987 (e.g., ``class C(): pass`` is no longer a syntax error).
1988 Patch #1176012 added support to the 'parser' module and 'compiler' package
1989 (thanks to logistix for that added support).
Brett Cannon409d8f22005-03-05 06:47:57 +00001990

Michael W. Hudson8e1afab2005-02-17 14:55:21 +00002001- Bug #1124295: the __name__ attribute of file objects was
2002 inadvertently made inaccessible in restricted mode.
2003
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002004- Bug #1074011: closing sys.std{out,err} now causes a flush() and
Martin v. Löwis8e3ca8a2005-01-23 09:41:49 +00002005 an ferror() call.
2006
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00002007- min() and max() now support key= arguments with the same meaning as in

2012
Raymond Hettingera422c342005-01-11 03:03:27 +00002013- set and frozenset objects can now be marshalled. SF #1098985.
2014
Michael W. Hudsonfaa76482005-01-31 17:09:25 +00002015- Bug #1077106: Poor argument checking could cause memory corruption
2016 in calls to os.read().
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002017
Jeremy Hyltonab630502005-02-04 18:44:06 +00002018- The parser did not complain about future statements in illegal

2020 statement occurs after anything other than a doc string.
2021
Neil Schemenauercf52c072005-08-12 17:34:58 +00002022- Change the %s format specifier for str objects so that it returns a
2023 unicode instance if the argument is not an instance of basestring and
2024 calling __str__ on the argument returns a unicode instance.
2025
Tim Petersf4e69282006-02-27 17:15:31 +00002026- Patch #1413181: changed ``PyThreadState_Delete()`` to forget about the
2027 current thread state when the auto-GIL-state machinery knows about
2028 it (since the thread state is being deleted, continuing to remember it
2029 can't help, but can hurt if another thread happens to get created with

2270 package that was included in Python 2.3, except that PEP 8 module names are
2271 now used (e.g. mail.message instead of email.Message). The MIME classes
2272 have been moved to a subpackage (e.g. email.mime.text instead of
2273 email.MIMEText). The old names are still supported for now. Several
2274 deprecated Message methods have been removed and lots of bugs have been

Andrew McNamarac89f2842005-01-12 07:44:42 +00002566 + writer doublequote handling improved.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002567 + Dialect classes passed to the module are no longer instantiated by
2568 the module before being parsed (the former validation scheme required
2569 this, but the mechanism was unreliable).
2570 + The dialect registry now contains instances of the internal
2571 C-coded dialect type, rather than references to python objects.
2572 + the internal c-coded dialect type is now immutable.
2573 + register_dialect now accepts the same keyword dialect specifications
2574 as the reader and writer, allowing the user to register dialects
2575 without first creating a dialect class.
2576 + a configurable limit to the size of parsed fields has been added -
2577 previously, an unmatched quote character could result in the entire
2578 file being read into the field buffer before an error was reported.
Andrew McNamara31d88962005-01-12 03:45:10 +00002579 + A new module method csv.field_size_limit() has been added that sets
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002580 the parser field size limit (returning the former limit). The initial
2581 limit is 128kB.
Andrew McNamara7f2053e2005-01-12 11:17:16 +00002582 + A line_num attribute has been added to the reader object, which tracks
2583 the number of lines read from the source iterator. This is not
2584 the same as the number of records returned, as records can span
2585 multiple lines.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002586 + reader and writer objects were not being registered with the cyclic-GC.
2587 This has been fixed.
2588
Brett Cannone6539c42005-01-08 02:43:53 +00002589- _DummyThread objects in the threading module now delete self.__block that is
2590 inherited from _Thread since it uses up a lock allocated by 'thread'. The
2591 lock primitives tend to be limited in number and thus should not be wasted on
2592 a _DummyThread object. Fixes bug #1089632.
2593

2598
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002599- locale.py now uses an updated locale alias table (built using
2600 Tools/i18n/makelocalealias.py, a tool to parse the X11 locale
2601 alias file); the encoding lookup was enhanced to use Python's
Andrew M. Kuchling88b85822005-08-23 00:57:07 +00002602 encoding alias table.

2621 be ignored by the rest of the module. (Bug #1078905).
2622
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002623- heapq.nsmallest() and heapq.nlargest() now support key= arguments with

2641 correctly.
2642
Walter Dörwaldbc8e6422005-04-21 21:32:03 +00002643- Partial fixes for SF bugs #1163244 and #1175396: If a chunk read by
2644 ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` has a trailing "\r", read one more
2645 character even if the user has passed a size parameter to get a proper

2648
Walter Dörwalda47d1c02005-08-30 10:23:14 +00002649- Bug #1251300: On UCS-4 builds the "unicode-internal" codec will now complain

2651 handlers.
2652
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00002653- Bug #1235646: ``codecs.StreamRecoder.next()`` now reencodes the data it reads
Walter Dörwaldc5238b82005-09-01 11:56:53 +00002654 from the input stream, so that the output is a byte string in the correct
2655 encoding instead of a unicode string.

Brett Cannon46d96232005-02-16 00:07:19 +00002710- spwdmodule.c is built only if either HAVE_GETSPNAM or HAVE_HAVE_GETSPENT is

2712
Brett Cannon516592f2004-12-07 00:42:59 +00002713- setup.py now uses the directories specified in LDFLAGS using the -L option
2714 and in CPPFLAGS using the -I option for adding library and include
2715 directories, respectively, for compiling extension modules against. This has
2716 led to the core being compiled using the values in CPPFLAGS. It also removes
2717 the need for the special-casing of both DarwinPorts and Fink for darwin since
2718 the proper directories can be specified in LDFLAGS (``-L/sw/lib`` for Fink,
2719 ``-L/opt/local/lib`` for DarwinPorts) and CPPFLAGS (``-I/sw/include`` for
2720 Fink, ``-I/opt/local/include`` for DarwinPorts).

2728-----
2729
Tim Petersc9d78aa2006-03-26 23:27:58 +00002730- ``PyMem_{Del, DEL}`` and ``PyMem_{Free, FREE}`` no longer map to
2731 ``PyObject_{Free, FREE}``. They map to the system ``free()`` now. If memory
2732 is obtained via the ``PyObject_`` family, it must be released via the
2733 ``PyObject_`` family, and likewise for the ``PyMem_`` family. This has
2734 always been officially true, but when Python's small-object allocator was
2735 introduced, an attempt was made to cater to a few extension modules
2736 discovered at the time that obtained memory via ``PyObject_New`` but
2737 released it via ``PyMem_DEL``. It's years later, and if such code still
2738 exists it will fail now (probably with segfaults, but calling wrong
2739 low-level memory management functions can yield many symptoms).
2740
Raymond Hettingerbeb31012005-08-16 03:47:52 +00002741- Added a C API for set and frozenset objects.
