14
Hirokazu Yamamoto2c66b7c2008-10-09 18:06:58 +000015- On windows, os.chdir given unicode was not working if GetCurrentDirectoryW
16 returned a path longer than MAX_PATH. (But It's doubtful this code path is
17 really executed because I cannot move to such directory on win2k)
18
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc00c94ed2008-10-07 20:40:09 +000019- Issue #4069: When set.remove(element) is used with a set element, the element
20 is temporarily replaced with an equivalent frozenset. But the eventual
21 KeyError would always report the empty frozenset([]) as the missing key. Now
22 it correctly refers to the initial element.
23
Christian Heimes4d8a6f42008-10-02 19:49:47 +000024- Fixed C99 style comments in several files. Python is now C89 compatible

138-----------------
139
Martin v. Löwis9fa5a282008-09-11 06:53:30 +0000140- Issue #3642: Suppress warning in obmalloc when size_t is larger than uint.
141
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +0000142- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
143 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
144 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
145 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
146 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
147 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
148 64bit values.
149
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +0000150- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on
151 error.
152
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd3ffb892008-09-09 07:24:30 +0000153- Issue #3777: long() applied to a float object now always return a long
154 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
155 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
156 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
157
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +0000158- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
159 a unicode argument.
160
Benjamin Peterson17f03ca2008-09-01 14:18:30 +0000161- Issue #3683: Fix compilation when --without-threads is given.
162
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +0000163- Issue #3668: Fix a memory leak with the "s*" argument parser in
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000164 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +0000165 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
166
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000167- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +0000168 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
169 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
170 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
171 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
172 type object.
173
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +0000174- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.
175
176- Fix memory leaks found with valgrind and update suppressions file.
177
178- Fix compiler warnings in opt mode which would lead to invalid memory reads.
179
180- Fix problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker.
181
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +0000182- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
183 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
184
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +0000185- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
186 ``__delslice__``.
187
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +0000188- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared
189 library targets in the Makefile.
190
Gregory P. Smith980b99b2008-09-07 05:15:18 +0000191- Issue #1204: The configure script now tests for additional libraries
192 that may be required when linking against readline. This fixes issues
193 with x86_64 builds on some platforms (a few Linux flavors and OpenBSD).
194

Nick Coghland2e09382008-09-11 12:11:06 +0000210- Issue #3781: Further warnings.catch_warnings() cleanup to prevent
211 silent misbehaviour when a single instance is nested in multiple
212 with statements, or when the methods are invoked in the wrong order.

314-----------------
315
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000316- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
317 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
318 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
319 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
320 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
321 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by

Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000324- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
325 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
326
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000327- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
328 value again.
329
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000330- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
331 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
332 and introducing s*.
333
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000334- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
335 object was stored in the freelist.
336
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000337- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
338 ValueError consistently across platforms.
339
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000340- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
341 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
342 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
343
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000344- Apply security patches from Apple.
345
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000346- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
347 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
348
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000349- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
350 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
351
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000352- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
353 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
354 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
355
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000356- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
357 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
358 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
359 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
360 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
361 failed have been fixed.

367
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000368- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
369 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
370
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000371- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
372 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
373 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
374
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000375- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
376 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
377 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
378 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
379 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
380 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
381
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000382- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
383 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
384

Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000391- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
392 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
393
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000394- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
395 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
396
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000397- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received

405
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000406- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
407 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
408 regular expression.
409
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000410- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
411 thread-safe.
412
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +0000413- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
414 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
415 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
416

420 menu entries were not deleted.
421
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +0000422- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
423 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
424
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000425- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
426 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
427
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000428- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
429 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
430 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
431
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +0000432- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
433 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
434 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
435
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +0000436- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as

476
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +0000477- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a
478 file name rather than a ZipInfo instance, so files are extracted with
479 mode 0600 rather than 000 under Unix.
480
Gregory P. Smitha36f8fe2008-08-04 00:13:29 +0000481- Issue #1857: subprocess.Popen.poll gained an additional _deadstate keyword

506
Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000507Core and Builtins
508-----------------
509
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000510- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
511 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
512 an integer using operator.index().
513
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000514- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
515 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
516
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000517- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
518 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
519
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000520- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
521 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
522 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
523
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000524- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
525 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
526 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
527 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
528 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
529 level.
530
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000531- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
532 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
533 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
534 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
535 all imports from that module to fail.
536
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000537- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
538 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
539 new-style classes.
540
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000541- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
542 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
543 another file in sys.stdout.
544
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000545- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
546 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
547 another thread's dictionary.
548
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000549- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
550 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
551 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
552 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
553 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
554 10, -1).
555
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000556- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
557 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
558 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000559
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000560- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
561 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
562 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +0000563

568 api functions without holding the GIL, which could lead to a fatal
569 error when they failed.
570
Martin v. Löwisaabf4042008-08-02 07:20:25 +0000571- Issue #799428: Fix Tkinter.Misc._nametowidget to unwrap Tcl command objects.

Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000579- Issue #3125: Remove copy_reg in multiprocessing and replace it with
580 ForkingPickler.register() to resolve conflict with ctypes.
581
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000582- Issue #3090: Fixed ARCHFLAGS parsing on OS/X

593
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000594- Issue #3301: Bisect module behaved badly when lo was negative.
Raymond Hettinger3cd1e422008-07-10 14:03:19 +0000595
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000596- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
597 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000598 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000599 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
600 merged into trunk.
601
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +0000602- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().

607
608- Issue #1746: Correct handling of zipfile archive comments (previously

Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000612- Issue #449227: The rlcompleter module now adds "(" to callable objects
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000613 when completed.
Facundo Batista66c52772008-07-02 16:52:55 +0000614
Nick Coghlanc060b0e2008-07-02 13:09:19 +0000615- Issue #3190: Pydoc now hides the automatic module attribute __package__ (the
616 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
617
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000618- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001070- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
1071 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
1072 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
1073 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
1074 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
1075 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
1076 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
1077 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001140- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1141 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1142 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1143 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1144 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1145 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1146 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1147 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1148 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1149 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1150 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1151 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1152 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1153 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1154 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1155 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1156 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1157 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1158 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1159 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1160
1161 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1162 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1163 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1164 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1165 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1166 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1167 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1168 access to the underlying socket used.
1169
1170 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1171 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1172 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001173
1174 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:

1447-----------------
1448
Fred Drakea8ee94b2008-03-01 02:45:07 +00001449- Issue #2051: pyc and pyo files are no longer created with permission
Barry Warsaw52973612008-03-01 02:23:38 +00001450 644. The mode is now inherited from the py file.
Christian Heimes40346852008-02-23 17:52:07 +00001451
Georg Brandlad61bc82008-02-23 15:11:18 +00001452- Issue #2067: file.__exit__() now calls subclasses' close() method.
1453
1454- Patch #1759: Backport of PEP 3129 class decorators.
Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +00001455
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001456- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +00001457 issue 215555 for a discussion.
1458
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001459- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1460 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1461 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1462 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1463 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1464 module is:
1465 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1466
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001467- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1468 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1469 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1470 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1471 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1472 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1473
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001474- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1475 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1476 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1477 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1478 PyObject_Format().
1479
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001480- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1481 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1482 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +00001483
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001484- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001485 prevent a possible crash: an Abstract Base Class would try to access
1486 a slot on a registered virtual subclass.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc60d6c7f2008-02-15 21:22:45 +00001487
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001488- Fixed repr() and str() of complex numbers with infinity or nan as
1489 real or imaginary part.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001491- Clear all free lists during a gc.collect() of the highest generation
1492 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1493 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001494
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001495- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
1496 subclass of collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set
1497 to a bound method.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcb01aa432008-02-08 00:56:02 +00001498
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +00001499- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
1500 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
1501
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001502- Limit free list of method and builtin function objects to 256
1503 entries each.

1510 calls. Python expected the return type int but the fork familie
1511 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +00001512
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001513- Issue #1678380: Fix a bug that identifies 0j and -0j when they

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001525- Patch #1473257: generator objects gain a gi_code attribute. This is
1526 the same object as the func_code attribute of the function that
1527 produced the generator.
Georg Brandl0cdf9a32008-01-26 14:14:20 +00001528

1530 compiler, even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is
1531 supposed to be run when the condition is false. Now the compiler
1532 correctly emits bytecode for the "else" suite.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +00001533
