10*Release date: XX-XXX-2008*
11
12Core and Builtins
13-----------------
14
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +000015- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
16 a unicode argument.
17
Benjamin Peterson17f03ca2008-09-01 14:18:30 +000018- Issue #3683: Fix compilation when --without-threads is given.
19
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000020- Issue #3668: Fix a memory leak with the "s*" argument parser in
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000021 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000022 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
23
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000024- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +000025 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
26 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
27 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
28 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
29 type object.
30
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +000031- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.
32
33- Fix memory leaks found with valgrind and update suppressions file.
34
35- Fix compiler warnings in opt mode which would lead to invalid memory reads.
36
37- Fix problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker.
38
Christian Heimesfb1813c2008-08-22 19:34:15 +000039- Issue #3642: Changed type of numarenas from uint to size_t
40 in order to silence a compilier warning on 64bit OSes.
41
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +000042- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
43 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
44
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +000045- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
46 ``__delslice__``.
47
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +000048- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared
49 library targets in the Makefile.
50
Benjamin Peterson14cb6bc2008-08-26 17:08:40 +000051C-API
52-----
53
54- Aliased PyObject_Bytes to PyObject_Str.
55
Barry Warsaw6a0b5592008-08-21 02:12:56 +000056Library
57-------

60 non-ascii characters and Unicode in setup.py meta-data.
61
62- Issue #3726: Allow spaces in separators in logging configuration files.
Vinay Sajip6a2fd812008-09-03 09:20:05 +000063
Marc-André Lemburg31a0a142008-09-02 12:11:19 +000064- Issue #3719: platform.architecture() fails if there are spaces in the
65 path to the Python binary.
66
Brett Cannon1eaf0742008-09-02 01:25:16 +000067- Issue 3602: Moved test.test_support.catch_warning() to
68 warnings.catch_warnings() along with some API cleanup. Expanding the tests
69 for catch_warnings() also led to an improvement in the raising of a
70 DeprecationWarning related to warnings.warn_explicit().
71
Benjamin Peterson973e6c22008-09-01 23:12:58 +000072- The deprecation warnings for the old camelCase threading API were removed.

81 directory.
Benjamin Petersonf22c26e2008-09-01 14:13:43 +000082
Gregory P. Smithd7122032008-09-02 05:36:11 +000083- Issue #3708: os.urandom no longer goes into an infinite loop when passed a
84 non-integer floating point number.
85

87 SEM_VALUE_MAX.
88
Benjamin Peterson37346b22008-08-23 20:27:43 +000089Extension Modules
90-----------------
91

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000100What's New in Python 2.6 beta 3?
101================================
102
Barry Warsaw07a4a382008-08-21 01:15:08 +0000103*Release date: 20-Aug-2008*
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000104
105Core and Builtins
106-----------------
107
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000108- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
109 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
110 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
111 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
112 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
113 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
114 default.
115
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000116- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
117 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
118
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000119- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
120 value again.
121
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000122- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
123 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
124 and introducing s*.
125
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000126- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
127 object was stored in the freelist.
128
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000129- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
130 ValueError consistently across platforms.
131
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000132- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
133 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
134 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
135
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000136- Apply security patches from Apple.
137
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000138- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
139 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
140
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000141- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
142 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
143
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000144- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
145 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
146 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
147
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000148- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
149 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
150 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
151 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
152 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
153 failed have been fixed.
154
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000155Library
156-------
157
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000158- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
159
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000160- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
161 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
162
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000163- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
164 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
165 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
166
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000167- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
168 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
169 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
170 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
171 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
172 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
173
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000174- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
175 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
176
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000177- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
178
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000179- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
180
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000181- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
182
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000183- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
184 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
185
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000186- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
187 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
188
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000189- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
190 in a redirect.
191
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000192- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +0000193 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000194
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +0000195- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
196 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
197
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000198- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
199 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
200 regular expression.
201
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000202- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
203 thread-safe.
204
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +0000205- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
206 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
207 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
208
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +0000209- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
210
Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +0000211- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
212 menu entries were not deleted.
213
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +0000214- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
215 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
216
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000217- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
218 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
219
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000220- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
221 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
222 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
223
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +0000224- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
225 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
226 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
227
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +0000228- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
229 the reload() built-in has been removed.
230
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000231- Changed code in the following modules/packages to remove warnings raised
Brett Cannonc1b76e42008-08-09 23:06:16 +0000232 while running under the ``-3`` flag: aifc, asynchat, asyncore, bdb, bsddb,
Brett Cannon047e4a92008-08-17 04:16:04 +0000233 ConfigParser, cookielib, csv, difflib, distutils, DocXMLRPCServer, email,

236 subprocess, sqlite3, tarfile, Tkinter, test.test_support, textwrap,
237 threading, tokenize, traceback, urlparse, wsgiref, xml, xmlrpclib.
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000238
Lars Gustäbel727bd0b2008-08-02 11:26:39 +0000239- Issue #3039: Fix tarfile.TarFileCompat.writestr() which always
240 raised an AttributeError.
241
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000242- Issue #2523: Fix quadratic behaviour when read()ing a binary file without
Antoine Pitroude781a42008-08-09 12:43:23 +0000243 asking for a specific length. This problem only affected files opened
244 using the new "io" module, not the built-in open() function.
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000245

266
267- Deprecate the sunaudio module for removal in Python 3.0.
268
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +0000269- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a
270 file name rather than a ZipInfo instance, so files are extracted with
271 mode 0600 rather than 000 under Unix.
272
Gregory P. Smitha36f8fe2008-08-04 00:13:29 +0000273- Issue #1857: subprocess.Popen.poll gained an additional _deadstate keyword

283-------------
284
Nick Coghlan6e8fef02008-08-18 13:14:22 +0000285- Issue #2235: the C API function PyObject_HashNotImplemented and its

Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000299Core and Builtins
300-----------------
301
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000302- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
303 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
304 an integer using operator.index().
305
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000306- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
307 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
308
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000309- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
310 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
311
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000312- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
313 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
314 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
315
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000316- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
317 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
318 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
319 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
320 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
321 level.
322
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000323- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
324 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
325 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
326 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
327 all imports from that module to fail.
328
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000329- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly

339 another thread's dictionary.
340
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000341- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
342 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
343 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
344 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
345 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
346 10, -1).
347
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000348- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,

389 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000390 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000862- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
863 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
864 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where

867 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
868 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support

Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000931
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000932- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
933 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
934 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
935 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
936 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
937 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
938 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
939 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
940 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
941 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
942 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
943 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
944 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
945 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
946 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
947 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
948 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
949 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
950 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
951 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
952
953 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
954 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
955 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
956 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
957 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
958 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
959 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
960 access to the underlying socket used.
961
962 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
963 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
964 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000965
966 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000967 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000968 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
969 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
970
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000971 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
972 suite to run in parallel without issue.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc9a0d3462008-03-23 09:55:29 +00001026- Issue #1477: With narrow Unicode builds, the unicode escape sequence
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001027 \Uxxxxxxxx did not accept values outside the Basic Multilingual
1028 Plane. This affected raw unicode literals and the
1029 'raw-unicode-escape' codec. Now UTF-16 surrogates are generated in
1030 this case, like normal unicode literals and the 'unicode-escape'
1031 codec.

1250
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001251- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1252 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1253 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1254 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1255 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1256 module is:
1257 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1258
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001259- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1260 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1261 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1262 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1263 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1264 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1265
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001266- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1267 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1268 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1269 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1270 PyObject_Format().
1271
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001272- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1273 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1274 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +00001275
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001276- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also

1284 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1285 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001286
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001287- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
1288 subclass of collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set
1289 to a bound method.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcb01aa432008-02-08 00:56:02 +00001290

1303 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +00001304

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001317- Patch #1473257: generator objects gain a gi_code attribute. This is
1318 the same object as the func_code attribute of the function that
1319 produced the generator.
Georg Brandl0cdf9a32008-01-26 14:14:20 +00001320
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001321- Issue #1920: "while 0" statements were completely removed by the
1322 compiler, even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is
1323 supposed to be run when the condition is false. Now the compiler
1324 correctly emits bytecode for the "else" suite.

Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +00001510 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
