16
Christian Heimes288e89a2008-01-18 18:24:07 +000017- Issue #1865: Bytes as an alias for str and b"" as an alias "" were
18 added.
19
Christian Heimesc94e2b52008-01-14 04:13:37 +000020- sys.float_info / PyFloat_GetInfo: The floating point information
21 object was converted from a dict to a specialized structseq object.
22
Christian Heimesf31b69f2008-01-14 03:42:48 +000023- Patch #1816: Added sys.flags structseq. It exposes the status of most
24 command line arguments and PYTHON* environment variables.
25
26- Object/structseq.c: Implemented new structseq representation. The patch
27 makes structseqs (e.g. the return value of os.stat) more readable.
Christian Heimes9c201962008-01-14 03:33:52 +000028

38 and sys.dont_write_bytecode attribute. All these can be set to forbid Python
39 to attempt to write compiled bytecode files.
40
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce0b76952008-01-04 02:04:15 +000041- Improve some exception messages when Windows fails to load an extension
42 module. Now we get for example '%1 is not a valid Win32 application' instead
43 of 'error code 193'.
44
Christian Heimes8267d1d2008-01-04 00:37:34 +000045- Bug #1481296: Fixed long(float('nan'))!=0L.
46

51 and INF. float("nan"), float("inf") and float("-inf") now work on every
52 platform with IEEE 754 semantics.
53
Raymond Hettingerfd7ed402007-12-18 21:24:09 +000054- Compiler now generates simpler and faster code for dictionary literals.
55 The oparg for BUILD_MAP now indicates an estimated dictionary size.
56 There is a new opcode, STORE_MAP, for adding entries to the dictionary.
57
Christian Heimesdb3d6cb2007-12-16 21:39:43 +000058- Issue #1638: %zd configure test fails on Linux
59
Christian Heimes90e10e72007-12-14 02:35:23 +000060- Issue #1620: New property decorator syntax was modifying the decorator
61 in place instead of creating a new decorator object.
62
Christian Heimes284d9272007-12-10 22:28:56 +000063- Issue #1580: New free format floating point representation based on
64 "Floating-Point Printer Sample Code", by Robert G. Burger. For example
65 repr(11./5) now returns '2.2' instead of '2.2000000000000002'.

74 inside packages with the -m switch via a new module level
75 __package__ attribute.
76
Christian Heimesdfdfaab2007-12-01 11:20:10 +000077- Issue #1534: Added ``PyFloat_GetMax()``, ``PyFloat_GetMin()`` and
78 ``PyFloat_GetInfo()`` to the float API.
79
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcdafd32b2007-11-30 20:51:40 +000080- Issue #1521: On 64bit platforms, using PyArgs_ParseTuple with the t# of w#
81 format code incorrectly truncated the length to an int, even when
82 PY_SSIZE_T_CLEAN is set. The str.decode method used to return incorrect
83 results with huge strings.
84
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbe49a902007-11-30 20:37:22 +000085- Issue #1402: Fix a crash on exit, when another thread is still running, and
86 if the deallocation of its frames somehow calls the PyGILState_Ensure() /

95 It now correctly saves its state between chunks of data.
96
Nick Coghlan327a39b2007-11-18 11:56:28 +000097- Patch #1739468: Directories and zipfiles containing a __main__.py file can
98 now be directly executed by passing their name to the interpreter. The
99 directory/zipfile is automatically inserted as the first entry in sys.path.
100
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0d75f092007-11-13 21:54:28 +0000101- Issue #1265: Fix a problem with sys.settrace, if the tracing function uses a
102 generator expression when at the same time the executed code is closing a
103 paused generator.
104
Raymond Hettinger1760c8a2007-11-08 02:52:43 +0000105- sets and frozensets now have an isdisjoint() method.

Raymond Hettinger8f669372007-10-03 21:18:11 +0000111- The enumerate() builtin function is no longer bounded to sequences smaller
112 than LONG_MAX. Formerly, it raised an OverflowError. Now, automatically
113 shifts from ints to longs.
114
Brett Cannon0b14f242007-09-30 19:45:10 +0000115- Issue #1686386: Tuple's tp_repr did not take into account the possibility of
116 having a self-referential tuple, which is possible from C code. Nor did
117 object's tp_str consider that a type's tp_str could do something that could
118 lead to an inifinite recursion. Py_ReprEnter() and Py_EnterRecursiveCall(),
119 respectively, fixed the issues.
120
Brett Cannon01531592007-09-17 03:28:34 +0000121- Issue #1164: It was possible to trigger deadlock when using the 'print'
122 statement to write to a file since the GIL was not released as needed. Now
123 PyObject_Print() does the right thing along with various tp_print
124 implementations of the built-in types and those in the collections module.
125
Brett Cannon4c20bc42007-09-11 21:02:28 +0000126- Issue #1147: Exceptions were directly allowing string exceptions in their
127 throw() method even though string exceptions no longer allowed.
128
Brett Cannona0c05512007-09-10 21:38:27 +0000129- Issue #1096: Prevent a segfault from getting the repr of a very deeply nested
130 list by using the recursion counter.
131
Brett Cannon1e534b52007-09-07 04:18:30 +0000132- Issue #1202533: Fix infinite recursion calls triggered by calls to
133 PyObject_Call() never calling back out to Python code to trigger recursion
134 depth updates/checks. Required the creation of a static RuntimeError
135 instance in case normalizing an exception put the recursion check value past
136 its limit. Fixes crashers infinite_rec_(1|2|4|5).py.
137
Martin v. Löwisa5136192007-09-04 14:19:28 +0000138- Patch #1031213: Decode source line in SyntaxErrors back to its original source

162 __*__ attributes. (Some already existed, e.g., __doc__ and __name__.)
163
Neal Norwitz8b2bfbc2007-05-23 06:35:32 +0000164- Add -3 option to the interpreter to warn about features that are
165 deprecated and will be changed/removed in Python 3.0.
166
Georg Brandl2134e752007-05-21 20:34:16 +0000167- Patch #1686487: you can now pass any mapping after '**' in function
168 calls.
169
Collin Winter62903052007-05-18 23:11:24 +0000170- except clauses may now be spelled either "except E, target:" or

Neal Norwitzcbd9ee62007-04-14 05:25:50 +0000180 setting a plain string, ie don't expand to single letter identifiers.
181
Raymond Hettinger13936692007-04-11 18:40:58 +0000182- Request #1191699: Slices can now be pickled.

187
Georg Brandl5cb76c12007-03-21 09:00:39 +0000188- Patch #1682205: a TypeError while unpacking an iterable is no longer
189 masked by a generic one with the message "unpack non-sequence".
190
Neal Norwitzaa754b72007-03-21 06:39:48 +0000191- Remove unused file Python/fmod.c.
192
Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +0000193- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
194 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
195 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the
196 other one is. For backwards compatibility, when both are
197 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +0000198 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
199 as supported by type.__new__().
Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +0000200
Georg Brandl2b869942007-03-17 16:08:45 +0000201- Patch #1675423: PyComplex_AsCComplex() now tries to convert an object
202 to complex using its __complex__() method before falling back to the
203 __float__() method. Therefore, the functions in the cmath module now
204 can operate on objects that define a __complex__() method.
205
Žiga Seilnacht6f2d09c2007-03-16 11:59:38 +0000206- Patch #1623563: allow __class__ assignment for classes with __slots__.

216 name.
217
Georg Brandl5240d742007-03-13 20:46:32 +0000218- Patch #1444529: the builtin compile() now accepts keyword arguments.
219
Georg Brandl7b9c5552007-03-12 14:30:05 +0000220- Bug #1678647: write a newline after printing an exception in any
221 case, even when converting the value to a string failed.
222
Georg Brandl871f1bc2007-03-12 13:17:36 +0000223- The dir() function has been extended to call the __dir__() method on
224 its argument, if it exists. If not, it will work like before. This allows
225 customizing the output of dir() in the presence of a __getattr__().
226
Collin Winter276887b2007-03-12 16:11:39 +0000227- Patch #922167: Python no longer segfaults when faced with infinitely
228 self-recursive reload() calls (as reported by bug #742342).
229
Žiga Seilnacht89032082007-03-11 15:54:54 +0000230- Patch #1675981: remove unreachable code from ``type.__new__()`` method.
231
Collin Wintere38051d2007-03-09 20:33:07 +0000232- Patch #1491866: change the complex() constructor to allow parthensized
233 forms. This means complex(repr(x)) now works instead of raising a
234 ValueError.
235
Georg Brandlaa2321b2007-03-07 00:40:28 +0000236- Patch #703779: unset __file__ in __main__ after running a file. This
237 makes the filenames the warning module prints much more sensible when
238 a PYTHONSTARTUP file is used.
239
Georg Brandl49aafc92007-03-07 00:34:46 +0000240- Variant of patch #697613: don't exit the interpreter on a SystemExit
241 exception if the -i command line option or PYTHONINSPECT environment
242 variable is given, but break into the interactive interpreter just like
243 on other exceptions or normal program exit.
244

246
Georg Brandl098cd692007-03-06 12:17:50 +0000247- Bug #1674503: close the file opened by execfile() in an error condition.
248
Georg Brandl0fca97a2007-03-05 22:28:08 +0000249- Patch #1674228: when assigning a slice (old-style), check for the
250 sq_ass_slice instead of the sq_slice slot.
251
Neal Norwitz88516a62007-02-26 22:41:45 +0000252- When printing an unraisable error, don't print exceptions. before the name.
253 This duplicates the behavior whening normally printing exceptions.

256
Brett Cannon129bd522007-01-30 21:34:36 +0000257- PEP 352: Raising a string exception now triggers a TypeError. Attempting to
258 catch a string exception raises DeprecationWarning.

1414Core and builtins
1415-----------------
1416
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +00001417- Unicode objects will no longer raise an exception when being
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001418 compared equal or unequal to a string and a UnicodeDecodeError
1419 exception occurs, e.g. as result of a decoding failure.
Neal Norwitz56423e52006-08-13 18:11:08 +00001420
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +00001421 Instead, the equal (==) and unequal (!=) comparison operators will
1422 now issue a UnicodeWarning and interpret the two objects as
1423 unequal. The UnicodeWarning can be filtered as desired using
1424 the warning framework, e.g. silenced completely, turned into an
1425 exception, logged, etc.
1426
1427 Note that compare operators other than equal and unequal will still
1428 raise UnicodeDecodeError exceptions as they've always done.
Neal Norwitz8a87f5d2006-08-12 17:03:09 +00001429
Marc-André Lemburg757ea272006-08-14 11:44:34 +00001430- Fix segfault when doing string formatting on subclasses of long.
1431
1432- Fix bug related to __len__ functions using values > 2**32 on 64-bit machines
1433 with new-style classes.
1434
1435- Fix bug related to __len__ functions returning negative values with
1436 classic classes.
1437
1438- Patch #1538606, Fix __index__() clipping. There were some problems
1439 discovered with the API and how integers that didn't fit into Py_ssize_t
1440 were handled. This patch attempts to provide enough alternatives

1471
Marc-André Lemburg574cfea2006-08-16 16:11:01 +00001472- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0. The change to

Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001580- _PyWeakref_GetWeakrefCount() now returns a Py_ssize_t; it previously

Neal Norwitzf71ec5a2006-07-30 06:57:04 +00001583- Bug #1515471: string.replace() accepts character buffers again.
1584
Neal Norwitz07aadb12006-07-30 06:55:48 +00001585- Add PyErr_WarnEx() so C code can pass the stacklevel to warnings.warn().
1586 This provides the proper warning for struct.pack().
1587 PyErr_Warn() is now deprecated in favor of PyErr_WarnEx().
1588
Neal Norwitz0d62a062006-07-30 06:53:31 +00001589- Patch #1531113: Fix augmented assignment with yield expressions.
1590 Also fix a SystemError when trying to assign to yield expressions.
1591
Phillip J. Ebyf7575d02006-07-28 21:12:07 +00001592- Bug #1529871: The speed enhancement patch #921466 broke Python's compliance
1593 with PEP 302. This was fixed by adding an ``imp.NullImporter`` type that is
1594 used in ``sys.path_importer_cache`` to cache non-directory paths and avoid
1595 excessive filesystem operations during imports.
1596
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +00001597- Bug #1521947: When checking for overflow, ``PyOS_strtol()`` used some
1598 operations on signed longs that are formally undefined by C.
1599 Unfortunately, at least one compiler now cares about that, so complicated
1600 the code to make that compiler happy again.
1601

1616
Andrew M. Kuchling93c928e2006-07-26 17:19:39 +00001617- Bug #1520864: unpacking singleton tuples in a 'for' loop (for x, in) works
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +00001618 again. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc magic number.
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +00001619 This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5b3 will be regenerated.

1653
Tim Peters6f681472006-07-27 23:44:37 +00001654- Bug #1529297: The rewrite of doctest for Python 2.4 unintentionally
1655 lost that tests are sorted by name before being run. This rarely
1656 matters for well-written tests, but can create baffling symptoms if
1657 side effects from one test to the next affect outcomes. ``DocTestFinder``

1659
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001660- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0, and is now kept

Martin v. Löwis426f4a12006-07-18 17:46:31 +00001678- Patch #1524429: Use repr() instead of backticks in Tkinter again.
1679
Brett Cannoncaebe222006-07-18 04:41:36 +00001680- Bug #1520914: Change time.strftime() to accept a zero for any position in its
1681 argument tuple. For arguments where zero is illegal, the value is forced to
1682 the minimum value that is correct. This is to support an undocumented but
1683 common way people used to fill in inconsequential information in the time
1684 tuple pre-2.4.
1685
Bob Ippolito5ea4bf12006-07-15 16:53:15 +00001686- Patch #1220874: Update the binhex module for Mach-O.
1687
Barry Warsawb110bad2006-07-21 14:51:07 +00001688- The email package has improved RFC 2231 support, specifically for
1689 recognizing the difference between encoded (name*0*=<blah>) and non-encoded
1690 (name*0=<blah>) parameter continuations. This may change the types of
1691 values returned from email.message.Message.get_param() and friends.
1692 Specifically in some cases where non-encoded continuations were used,
1693 get_param() used to return a 3-tuple of (None, None, string) whereas now it
1694 will just return the string (since non-encoded continuations don't have
1695 charset and language parts).
1696
1697 Also, whereas % values were decoded in all parameter continuations, they are
1698 now only decoded in encoded parameter parts.
1699
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +00001700- Bug #1517990: IDLE keybindings on MacOS X now work correctly
1701
1702- Bug #1517996: IDLE now longer shows the default Tk menu when a
1703 path browser, class browser or debugger is the frontmost window on MacOS X
1704
Barry Warsaw00decd72006-07-27 23:43:15 +00001705- Patch #1520294: Support for getset and member descriptors in types.py,
1706 inspect.py, and pydoc.py. Specifically, this allows for querying the type
1707 of an object against these built-in types and more importantly, for getting
1708 their docstrings printed in the interactive interpreter's help() function.

1730 exactly one element enabled again. This allows iterating over these
1731 arrays, without the need to check the array size before.
1732
Thomas Heller6e1ad2e2006-07-13 17:05:13 +00001733- Bug #1521375: When the code in ctypes.util.find_library was
Andrew M. Kuchlingb7eca832006-07-13 17:37:26 +00001734 run with root privileges, it could overwrite or delete
Thomas Heller2bdf29e2006-07-13 17:01:14 +00001735 /dev/null in certain cases; this is now fixed.
1736
Thomas Heller47d7a062006-07-12 08:43:47 +00001737- Bug #1467450: On Mac OS X 10.3, RTLD_GLOBAL is now used as the

1751-----
1752
1753- Bug #1501330: Change test_ossaudiodev to be much more tolerant in terms of
1754 how long the test file should take to play. Now accepts taking 2.93 secs
1755 (exact time) +/- 10% instead of the hard-coded 3.1 sec.
1756
Georg Brandl4793aa32006-07-28 18:31:39 +00001757- Patch #1529686: The standard tests ``test_defaultdict``, ``test_iterlen``,
1758 ``test_uuid`` and ``test_email_codecs`` didn't actually run any tests when
1759 run via ``regrtest.py``. Now they do.

1769- PythonLauncher now works correctly when the path to the script contains
1770 characters that are treated specially by the shell (such as quotes).
1771
1772- Bug #1527397: PythonLauncher now launches scripts with the working directory
1773 set to the directory that contains the script instead of the user home
Tim Peters4643c2f2006-08-10 22:45:34 +00001774 directory. That latter was an implementation accident and not what users

1787 again evaluates to a int object, not a long.
1788
Neil Schemenauer0e07b602006-07-09 16:16:34 +00001789- Bug #1501934: The scope of global variables that are locally assigned
1790 using augmented assignment is now correctly determined.
1791
Martin v. Löwisd5cfa542006-07-03 13:47:40 +00001792- Bug #927248: Recursive method-wrapper objects can now safely
1793 be released.

1796 and atof().
1797
Hye-Shik Change6a1cb92006-06-23 21:16:18 +00001798- Bug #1511381: codec_getstreamcodec() in codec.c is corrected to
1799 omit a default "error" argument for NULL pointer. This allows

Neal Norwitzfb48afa2006-07-08 05:31:37 +00001802- Bug #1519018: 'as' is now validated properly in import statements.
1803
Neal Norwitz28746ab2006-07-09 22:14:42 +00001804- On 64 bit systems, int literals that use less than 64 bits are
1805 now ints rather than longs.
1806
Neal Norwitzed657552006-07-10 00:04:44 +00001807- Bug #1512814, Fix incorrect lineno's when code at module scope
1808 started after line 256.
1809
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +00001810- New function ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dict mapping thread
1811 id to topmost thread stack frame. This is for expert use, and is
1812 especially useful for debugging application deadlocks. The functionality
1813 was previously available in Fazal Majid's ``threadframe`` extension
1814 module, but it wasn't possible to do this in a wholly threadsafe way from
1815 an extension.

1832
Thomas Woutersadd19112006-07-05 11:03:49 +00001833- string.Template() now correctly handles tuple-values. Previously,
1834 multi-value tuples would raise an exception and single-value tuples would
1835 be treated as the value they contain, instead.
1836
Martin v. Löwisede77f52006-07-03 13:01:35 +00001837- Bug #822974: Honor timeout in telnetlib.{expect,read_until}

1862
Brett Cannon53ab5b72006-06-22 16:49:14 +00001863- Bug #1510580: The 'warnings' module improperly required that a Warning
1864 category be either a types.ClassType and a subclass of Warning. The proper
1865 check is just that it is a subclass with Warning as the documentation states.
1866
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +00001867- The compiler module now correctly compiles the new try-except-finally

1876 null character before sending it to a custom converter. This has been fixed
1877 now.
1878
Neal Norwitz0f8b31a2006-06-28 06:28:31 +00001879Extension Modules
1880-----------------
1881
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +00001882- #1494314: Fix a regression with high-numbered sockets in 2.4.3. This
1883 means that select() on sockets > FD_SETSIZE (typically 1024) work again.
1884 The patch makes sockets use poll() internally where available.
Anthony Baxter93ab5fa2006-07-11 02:04:09 +00001885
Thomas Hellerb9cb84f2006-07-10 11:17:37 +00001886- Assigning None to pointer type fields in ctypes structures possible
1887 overwrote the wrong fields, this is fixed now.

1893 integer or long, without range checking.
1894
1895- Patch #1517790: It is now possible to use custom objects in the ctypes
1896 foreign function argtypes sequence as long as they provide a from_param
1897 method, no longer is it required that the object is a ctypes type.
1898
1899- The '_ctypes' extension module now works when Python is configured
1900 with the --without-threads option.

Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +00001918- 'configure' now detects the zlib library the same way as distutils.
Thomas Woutersfc34f6c2006-07-06 10:48:28 +00001919 Previously, the slight difference could cause compilation errors of the
1920 'zlib' module on systems with more than one version of zlib.
1921
Martin v. Löwis4cbd05c2006-07-06 07:05:21 +00001922- The MSI compileall step was fixed to also support a TARGETDIR

1953Core and builtins
1954-----------------
1955
Georg Brandla56b9152006-06-19 06:35:54 +00001956- Patch #1507676: Error messages returned by invalid abstract object operations
1957 (such as iterating over an integer) have been improved and now include the
1958 type of the offending object to help with debugging.
1959
Brett Cannonea3912b2006-06-13 21:46:41 +00001960- Bug #992017: A classic class that defined a __coerce__() method that returned
1961 its arguments swapped would infinitely recurse and segfault the interpreter.
1962
Neal Norwitz909eb122006-06-12 02:13:21 +00001963- Fix the socket tests so they can be run concurrently.
1964
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +00001965- Removed 5 integers from C frame objects (PyFrameObject).
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +00001966 f_nlocals, f_ncells, f_nfreevars, f_stack_size, f_restricted.
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +00001967
Brett Cannon22565aa2006-06-09 22:31:23 +00001968- Bug #532646: object.__call__() will continue looking for the __call__
1969 attribute on objects until one without one is found. This leads to recursion
1970 when you take a class and set its __call__ attribute to an instance of the
1971 class. Originally fixed for classic classes, but this fix is for new-style.
1972 Removes the infinite_rec_3 crasher.
1973
Georg Brandl24250812006-06-09 18:45:48 +00001974- The string and unicode methods startswith() and endswith() now accept
1975 a tuple of prefixes/suffixes to look for. Implements RFE #1491485.
1976
Brett Cannonde3b0522006-06-08 17:00:45 +00001977- Buffer objects, at the C level, never used the char buffer
1978 implementation even when the char buffer for the wrapped object was
1979 explicitly requested (originally returned the read or write buffer).
1980 Now a TypeError is raised if the char buffer is not present but is
1981 requested.
1982
Georg Brandlddbaa662006-06-04 21:56:52 +00001983- Patch #1346214: Statements like "if 0: suite" are now again optimized
1984 away like they were in Python 2.4.
1985
Georg Brandlb7c8f542006-05-27 12:30:25 +00001986- Builtin exceptions are now full-blown new-style classes instead of
1987 instances pretending to be classes, which speeds up exception handling
1988 by about 80% in comparison to 2.5a2.
1989
Martin v. Löwisd004fc82006-05-27 08:36:52 +00001990- Patch #1494554: Update unicodedata.numeric and unicode.isnumeric to
1991 Unicode 4.1.
1992
Georg Brandlf4ef1162006-05-26 18:03:31 +00001993- Patch #921466: sys.path_importer_cache is now used to cache valid and
1994 invalid file paths for the built-in import machinery which leads to
1995 fewer open calls on startup.
1996
Tim Peters696cf432006-05-24 21:10:40 +00001997- Patch #1442927: ``long(str, base)`` is now up to 6x faster for non-power-
1998 of-2 bases. The largest speedup is for inputs with about 1000 decimal
1999 digits. Conversion from non-power-of-2 bases remains quadratic-time in
2000 the number of input digits (it was and remains linear-time for bases
2001 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32).
2002
Tim Petersb713ec22006-05-23 18:45:30 +00002003- Bug #1334662: ``int(string, base)`` could deliver a wrong answer
2004 when ``base`` was not 2, 4, 8, 10, 16 or 32, and ``string`` represented
2005 an integer close to ``sys.maxint``. This was repaired by patch
2006 #1335972, which also gives a nice speedup.
2007
Richard Jonescebbefc2006-05-23 18:28:17 +00002008- Patch #1337051: reduced size of frame objects.
2009
2010- PyErr_NewException now accepts a tuple of base classes as its
2011 "base" parameter.
2012
Richard Jones7c88dcc2006-05-23 10:37:38 +00002013- Patch #876206: function call speedup by retaining allocated frame
2014 objects.
2015
Georg Brandl7b90e162006-05-18 07:01:27 +00002016- Bug #1462152: file() now checks more thoroughly for invalid mode
2017 strings and removes a possible "U" before passing the mode to the

2023
Martin v. Löwis879768d2006-05-11 13:28:43 +00002024- WindowsError now has two error code attributes: errno, which carries
2025 the error values from errno.h, and winerror, which carries the error
2026 values from winerror.h. Previous versions put the winerror.h values
2027 (from GetLastError()) into the errno attribute.
2028
Martin v. Löwis77736712006-05-04 05:51:03 +00002029- Patch #1475845: Raise IndentationError for unexpected indent.

2032
Tim Peters44bd9862006-06-01 13:49:23 +00002033- Patch #1497053 & bug #1275608: Exceptions occurring in ``__eq__()``
2034 methods were always silently ignored by dictionaries when comparing keys.
2035 They are now passed through (except when using the C API function
2036 ``PyDict_GetItem()``, whose semantics did not change).
2037
2038- Bug #1456209: In some obscure cases it was possible for a class with a
2039 custom ``__eq__()`` method to confuse dict internals when class instances
2040 were used as a dict's keys and the ``__eq__()`` method mutated the dict.
2041 No, you don't have any code that did this ;-)

2056 been renamed to _functools and a functools Python wrapper module added.
2057 This provides a home for additional function related utilities that are
2058 not specifically about functional programming. See PEP 309.

2071 (up to the system limit of 32K characters).
2072
2073- Use Win32 API to implement os.{access,chdir,chmod,mkdir,remove,rename,rmdir,utime}.
2074 As a result, these functions now raise WindowsError instead of OSError.
2075
Tim Peters7a822da2006-05-25 21:50:17 +00002076- ``time.clock()`` on Win64 should use the high-performance Windows

2097 results. It could previously incorrectly return 0 in some cases.
2098 Fixes SF bug 1493322 (pybsddb bug 1184012).
2099
Gregory P. Smithff7d9912006-06-08 05:17:08 +00002100- bsddb: the bsddb.dbtables Modify method now raises the proper error and

2138
Tim Peters43898b42006-06-14 04:09:25 +00002139- ``difflib``'s ``SequenceMatcher.get_matching_blocks()`` was changed to
2140 guarantee that adjacent triples in the return list always describe
2141 non-adjacent blocks. Previously, a pair of matching blocks could end
2142 up being described by multiple adjacent triples that formed a partition
2143 of the matching pair.

2152
Andrew M. Kuchling0873b112006-06-09 16:46:51 +00002153- The wsgiref package has been added to the standard library.
2154
Nick Coghlan676725d2006-06-08 13:54:49 +00002155- The functions update_wrapper() and wraps() have been added to the functools

2160 ``doctest.is_private()`` function, both deprecated in 2.4, were removed.
Tim Petersbf0400a2006-06-05 01:43:03 +00002161
Martin v. Löwis3f767792006-06-04 19:36:28 +00002162- Patch #1359618: Speed up charmap encoder by using a trie structure
2163 for lookup.
2164
Tim Petersd609b1a2006-06-02 23:22:51 +00002165- The functions in the ``pprint`` module now sort dictionaries by key
2166 before computing the display. Before 2.5, ``pprint`` sorted a dictionary
2167 if and only if its display required more than one line, although that
2168 wasn't documented. The new behavior increases predictability; e.g.,
2169 using ``pprint.pprint(a_dict)`` in a doctest is now reliable.

2189 tarfiles.
2190
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00002191- Patch #721464: pdb.Pdb instances can now be given explicit stdin and

2247-----------------
2248
Thomas Heller1b046642006-04-18 18:51:06 +00002249- Bug #1465834: 'bdist_wininst preinstall script support' was fixed
2250 by converting these apis from macros into exported functions again:
2251
2252 PyParser_SimpleParseFile PyParser_SimpleParseString PyRun_AnyFile
2253 PyRun_AnyFileEx PyRun_AnyFileFlags PyRun_File PyRun_FileEx
2254 PyRun_FileFlags PyRun_InteractiveLoop PyRun_InteractiveOne

2256 PyRun_String Py_CompileString
2257
Martin v. Löwis45294a92006-04-18 06:24:08 +00002258- Under COUNT_ALLOCS, types are not necessarily immortal anymore.
2259
Martin v. Löwis19ab6c92006-04-16 18:55:50 +00002260- All uses of PyStructSequence_InitType have been changed to initialize
2261 the type objects only once, even if the interpreter is initialized
2262 multiple times.
2263
Neal Norwitz61546162006-04-14 05:20:28 +00002264- Bug #1454485, array.array('u') could crash the interpreter. This was
2265 due to PyArgs_ParseTuple(args, 'u#', ...) trying to convert buffers (strings)
2266 to unicode when it didn't make sense. 'u#' now requires a unicode string.
2267
2268- Py_UNICODE is unsigned. It was always documented as unsigned, but
2269 due to a bug had a signed value in previous versions.
2270
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002271- Patch #837242: ``id()`` of any Python object always gives a positive
2272 number now, which might be a long integer. ``PyLong_FromVoidPtr`` and
2273 ``PyLong_AsVoidPtr`` have been changed accordingly. Note that it has
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00002274 never been correct to implement a ``__hash()__`` method that returns the
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002275 ``id()`` of an object:
Martin v. Löwis0bc2ab92006-04-10 20:28:17 +00002276
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002277 def __hash__(self):
2278 return id(self) # WRONG
2279
2280 because a hash result must be a (short) Python int but it was always
2281 possible for ``id()`` to return a Python long. However, because ``id()``
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00002282 could return negative values before, on a 32-bit box an ``id()`` result
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002283 was always usable as a hash value before this patch. That's no longer
2284 necessarily so.
2285
2286- Python on OS X 10.3 and above now uses dlopen() (via dynload_shlib.c)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00002287 to load extension modules and now provides the dl module. As a result,
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002288 sys.setdlopenflags() now works correctly on these systems. (SF patch
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00002289 #1454844)
2290
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00002291- Patch #1463867: enhanced garbage collection to allow cleanup of cycles
2292 involving generators that have paused outside of any ``try`` or ``with``
2293 blocks. (In 2.5a1, a paused generator that was part of a reference
2294 cycle could not be garbage collected, regardless of whether it was
2295 paused in a ``try`` or ``with`` block.)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00002296

2302
Georg Brandlbbfe4fa2006-04-11 06:47:43 +00002303- Bug #1467952: os.listdir() now correctly raises an error if readdir()
2304 fails with an error condition.
2305
Gregory P. Smith3adc4aa2006-04-13 19:19:01 +00002306- Fixed bsddb.db.DBError derived exceptions so they can be unpickled.

2309 the cachesize parameter.
2310
2311- Bug #1149413: bsddb.*open() no longer raises an exception when using
2312 a temporary db (file=None) with the 'n' flag to truncate on open.
2313
2314- Bug #1332852: bsddb module minimum BerkeleyDB version raised to 3.3
2315 as older versions cause excessive test failures.

2325 abusing errno.
2326
Tim Peters711bf302006-04-25 03:31:36 +00002327- Patch #1475231: ``doctest`` has a new ``SKIP`` option, which causes
2328 a doctest to be skipped (the code is not run, and the expected output

2410
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00002411- The test_contextlib test in 2.5a1 wasn't actually run unless you ran
2412 it separately and by hand. It also wasn't cleaning up its changes to
2413 the current Decimal context.
2414
Thomas Woutersabd08882006-04-26 15:53:30 +00002415- regrtest.py now has a -M option to run tests that test the new limits of
2416 containers, on 64-bit architectures. Running these tests is only sensible
2417 on 64-bit machines with more than two gigabytes of memory. The argument
2418 passed is the maximum amount of memory for the tests to use.

Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002444Core and builtins
2445-----------------
2446
Nick Coghlan43832302006-04-23 17:04:07 +00002447- PEP 338: -m command line switch now delegates to runpy.run_module
2448 allowing it to support modules in packages and zipfiles
2449
Martin v. Löwisc661b882006-04-20 04:54:23 +00002450- On Windows, .DLL is not an accepted file name extension for
2451 extension modules anymore; extensions are only found if they
2452 end in .PYD.
2453
Martin v. Löwisea62d252006-04-03 10:56:49 +00002454- Bug #1421664: sys.stderr.encoding is now set to the same value as
2455 sys.stdout.encoding.
2456
Neal Norwitz92e212f2006-04-03 04:48:37 +00002457- __import__ accepts keyword arguments.
2458
Georg Brandlccadf842006-03-31 18:54:53 +00002459- Patch #1460496: round() now accepts keyword arguments.
2460
Anthony Baxter262c00a2006-03-30 10:53:17 +00002461- Fixed bug #1459029 - unicode reprs were double-escaped.
2462
Hye-Shik Changd478f342006-03-23 12:32:36 +00002463- Patch #1396919: The system scope threads are reenabled on FreeBSD
2464 5.4 and later versions.
2465
Neal Norwitze98ccf62006-03-23 05:39:47 +00002466- Bug #1115379: Compiling a Unicode string with an encoding declaration
2467 now gives a SyntaxError.
2468
Georg Brandlabd1ff82006-03-18 07:59:59 +00002469- Previously, Python code had no easy way to access the contents of a
2470 cell object. Now, a ``cell_contents`` attribute has been added
2471 (closes patch #1170323).
2472
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00002473- Patch #1123430: Python's small-object allocator now returns an arena to
2474 the system ``free()`` when all memory within an arena becomes unused
2475 again. Prior to Python 2.5, arenas (256KB chunks of memory) were never
2476 freed. Some applications will see a drop in virtual memory size now,
2477 especially long-running applications that, from time to time, temporarily
2478 use a large number of small objects. Note that when Python returns an
2479 arena to the platform C's ``free()``, there's no guarantee that the
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00002480 platform C library will in turn return that memory to the operating system.
2481 The effect of the patch is to stop making that impossible, and in tests it
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00002482 appears to be effective at least on Microsoft C and gcc-based systems.
2483 Thanks to Evan Jones for hard work and patience.
2484
Georg Brandl533ff6f2006-03-08 18:09:27 +00002485- Patch #1434038: property() now uses the getter's docstring if there is
2486 no "doc" argument given. This makes it possible to legitimately use
2487 property() as a decorator to produce a read-only property.
2488
Guido van Rossum9aa37ab2006-03-07 18:54:08 +00002489- PEP 357, patch 1436368: add an __index__ method to int/long and a matching
2490 nb_index slot to the PyNumberMethods struct. The slot is consulted instead
2491 of requiring an int or long in slicing and a few other contexts, enabling
2492 other objects (e.g. Numeric Python's integers) to be used as slice indices.
2493
Neal Norwitz995acdf2006-03-07 05:01:00 +00002494- Fixed various bugs reported by Coverity's Prevent tool.
2495
Brett Cannonbf364092006-03-01 04:25:17 +00002496- PEP 352, patch #1104669: Make exceptions new-style objects. Introduced the
2497 new exception base class, BaseException, which has a new message attribute.
2498 KeyboardInterrupt and SystemExit to directly inherit from BaseException now.
2499 Raising a string exception now raises a DeprecationWarning.
2500
Thomas Woutersfb609f42006-02-28 16:37:25 +00002501- Patch #1438387, PEP 328: relative and absolute imports. Imports can now be
2502 explicitly relative, using 'from .module import name' to mean 'from the same
2503 package as this module is in. Imports without dots still default to the
2504 old relative-then-absolute, unless 'from __future__ import
2505 absolute_import' is used.
2506
Brett Cannona7446e32006-02-27 23:39:10 +00002507- Properly check if 'warnings' raises an exception (usually when a filter set
2508 to "error" is triggered) when raising a warning for raising string
2509 exceptions.
2510
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002511- CO_GENERATOR_ALLOWED is no longer defined. This behavior is the default.
Neal Norwitz0023a2f2006-02-27 23:24:48 +00002512 The name was removed from Include/code.h.
2513
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002514- PEP 308: conditional expressions were added: (x if cond else y).
Neal Norwitzeb651252006-02-27 16:47:12 +00002515
Guido van Rossum1968ad32006-02-25 22:38:04 +00002516- Patch 1433928:
2517 - The copy module now "copies" function objects (as atomic objects).
2518 - dict.__getitem__ now looks for a __missing__ hook before raising
2519 KeyError.
2520
Tim Peters84ef21c2006-02-28 20:39:06 +00002521- PEP 343: with statement implemented. Needs ``from __future__ import
2522 with_statement``. Use of 'with' as a variable will generate a warning.
2523 Use of 'as' as a variable will also generate a warning (unless it's
Neal Norwitz055ec242006-02-28 20:06:49 +00002524 part of an import statement).
Guido van Rossum1a5e21e2006-02-28 21:57:43 +00002525 The following objects have __context__ methods:
2526 - The built-in file type.
2527 - The thread.LockType type.
2528 - The following types defined by the threading module:
2529 Lock, RLock, Condition, Semaphore, BoundedSemaphore.
2530 - The decimal.Context class.
Guido van Rossumc2e20742006-02-27 22:32:47 +00002531
Marc-André Lemburgfe4b34c2006-02-19 15:22:22 +00002532- Fix the encodings package codec search function to only search
2533 inside its own package. Fixes problem reported in patch #1433198.
2534
2535 Note: Codec packages should implement and register their own
2536 codec search function. PEP 100 has the details.
2537
Tim Peters9ea89d22006-06-04 03:26:02 +00002538- PEP 353: Using ``Py_ssize_t`` as the index type.
2539
2540- ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` builds now add ``4*sizeof(size_t)`` bytes of debugging
2541 info to each allocated block, since the ``Py_ssize_t`` changes (PEP 353)
2542 now allow Python to make use of memory blocks exceeding 2**32 bytes for
2543 some purposes on 64-bit boxes. A ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` build was limited
2544 to 4-byte allocations before.
Martin v. Löwis18e16552006-02-15 17:27:45 +00002545
Neal Norwitzfc76d632006-01-10 06:03:13 +00002546- Patch #1400181, fix unicode string formatting to not use the locale.
2547 This is how string objects work. u'%f' could use , instead of .
2548 for the decimal point. Now both strings and unicode always use periods.
2549
Neal Norwitz671b9e32006-01-09 07:07:12 +00002550- Bug #1244610, #1392915, fix build problem on OpenBSD 3.7 and 3.8.
2551 configure would break checking curses.h.
2552
Georg Brandlcd4d1e82005-12-27 17:37:07 +00002553- Bug #959576: The pwd module is now builtin. This allows Python to be
2554 built on UNIX platforms without $HOME set.
2555
Neal Norwitzc10978f2005-12-19 06:07:16 +00002556- Bug #1072182, fix some potential problems if characters are signed.

2559
Neal Norwitzdb83eb32005-12-18 05:29:30 +00002560- Bug #1378022, UTF-8 files with a leading BOM crashed the interpreter.
2561
Neal Norwitze7214a12005-12-18 05:03:17 +00002562- Support for converting hex strings to floats no longer works.
2563 This was not portable. float('0x3') now raises a ValueError.
2564
Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00002565- Patch #1382163: Expose Subversion revision number to Python. New C API

Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00002567 is now displayed in interactive prompt banner.
2568
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00002569- Implementation of PEP 341 - Unification of try/except and try/finally.
2570 "except" clauses can now be written together with a "finally" clause in
Neal Norwitz11ca77e2005-12-17 22:24:12 +00002571 one try statement instead of two nested ones. Patch #1355913.

2580
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00002581- SF Bug #1350188, "setdlopenflags" leads to crash upon "import"
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002582 It was possible for dlerror() to return a NULL pointer, so
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002583 it will now use a default error message in this case.
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00002584
Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00002585- Replaced most Unicode charmap codecs with new ones using the
2586 new Unicode translate string feature in the builtin charmap
2587 codec; the codecs were created from the mapping tables available
2588 at ftp.unicode.org and contain a few updates (e.g. the Mac OS
2589 encodings now include a mapping for the Apple logo)
2590
Tim Peterse3547fd2005-12-16 23:13:57 +00002591- Added a few more codecs for Mac OS encodings

2610
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002611- All iterators now have a Boolean value of True. Formerly, some iterators
Raymond Hettinger6b27cda2005-09-24 21:23:05 +00002612 supported a __len__() method which evaluated to False when the iterator
2613 was empty.
2614
Guido van Rossum630db602005-09-20 18:49:54 +00002615- On 64-bit platforms, when __len__() returns a value that cannot be
2616 represented as a C int, raise OverflowError.
2617
Skip Montanarof8948ca2005-09-19 03:54:46 +00002618- test__locale is skipped on OS X < 10.4 (only partial locale support is

2635
Barry Warsawe2eca0b2005-08-15 18:14:19 +00002636- SF bug #900092: When tracing (e.g. for hotshot), restore 'return' events for
2637 exceptions that cause a function to exit.
2638
Raymond Hettinger9f1a6792005-07-31 01:16:36 +00002639- The implementation of set() and frozenset() was revised to use its
2640 own internal data structure. Memory consumption is reduced by 1/3
2641 and there are modest speed-ups as well. The API is unchanged.
2642
Tim Petersde7990b2005-07-17 23:45:23 +00002643- SF bug #1238681: freed pointer is used in longobject.c:long_pow().
2644
Michael W. Hudson0edc7a02005-07-12 10:21:19 +00002645- SF bug #1229429: PyObject_CallMethod failed to decrement some
2646 reference counts in some error exit cases.
2647
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002648- SF bug #1185883: Python's small-object memory allocator took over
2649 a block managed by the platform C library whenever a realloc specified
2650 a small new size. However, there's no portable way to know then how
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002651 much of the address space following the pointer is valid, so there's no
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002652 portable way to copy data from the C-managed block into Python's
2653 small-object space without risking a memory fault. Python's small-object
2654 realloc now leaves such blocks under the control of the platform C
2655 realloc.
2656
Michael W. Hudsonb8963812005-07-05 15:21:58 +00002657- SF bug #1232517: An overflow error was not detected properly when

2659
Raymond Hettinger3296e692005-06-29 23:29:56 +00002660- SF bug #1224347: hex longs now print with lowercase letters just
2661 like their int counterparts.
2662
Michael W. Hudson188d4362005-06-20 16:52:57 +00002663- SF bug #1163563: the original fix for bug #1010677 ("thread Module
2664 Breaks PyGILState_Ensure()") broke badly in the case of multiple
2665 interpreter states; back out that fix and do a better job (see
2666 http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-dev/2005-June/054258.html
2667 for a longer write-up of the problem).
2668
Michael W. Hudsondf888462005-06-03 14:41:55 +00002669- SF patch #1180995: marshal now uses a binary format by default when
2670 serializing floats.
2671
Michael W. Hudsonda85a902005-06-01 11:34:22 +00002672- SF patch #1181301: on platforms that appear to use IEEE 754 floats,
2673 the routines that promise to produce IEEE 754 binary representations
2674 of floats now simply copy bytes around.
2675
Skip Montanarobbf12ba2005-05-20 03:07:06 +00002676- bug #967182: disallow opening files with 'wU' or 'aU' as specified by PEP
2677 278.
2678
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00002679- patch #1109424: int, long, float, complex, and unicode now check for the
2680 proper magic slot for type conversions when subclassed. Previously the
2681 magic slot was ignored during conversion. Semantics now match the way
2682 subclasses of str always behaved. int/long/float, conversion of an instance
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00002683 to the base class has been moved to the proper nb_* magic slot and out of
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00002684 PyNumber_*().
Neal Norwitzcfba5f82006-04-25 05:05:03 +00002685 Thanks Walter Drwald.
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00002686
Barry Warsawc8d907c2005-04-19 23:43:40 +00002687- Descriptors defined in C with a PyGetSetDef structure, where the setter is
2688 NULL, now raise an AttributeError when attempting to set or delete the
2689 attribute. Previously a TypeError was raised, but this was inconsistent
2690 with the equivalent pure-Python implementation.
2691
Michael W. Hudson774479c2005-04-18 08:46:17 +00002692- It is now safe to call PyGILState_Release() before
2693 PyEval_InitThreads() (note that if there is reason to believe there
2694 are multiple threads around you still must call PyEval_InitThreads()
2695 before using the Python API; this fix is for extension modules that
2696 have no way of knowing if Python is multi-threaded yet).
2697
Michael W. Hudsone3afc592005-04-07 10:11:19 +00002698- Typing Ctrl-C whilst raw_input() was waiting in a build with threads
2699 disabled caused a crash.
2700
Michael W. Hudsonb330adf2005-03-31 09:35:44 +00002701- Bug #1165306: instancemethod_new allowed the creation of a method
2702 with im_class == im_self == NULL, which caused a crash when called.
2703
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002704- Move exception finalisation later in the shutdown process - this

2708
Brett Cannon409d8f22005-03-05 06:47:57 +00002709- Defining a class with empty parentheses is now allowed
Brett Cannonf4189912005-04-09 02:30:16 +00002710 (e.g., ``class C(): pass`` is no longer a syntax error).
2711 Patch #1176012 added support to the 'parser' module and 'compiler' package
2712 (thanks to logistix for that added support).

Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002727- Bug #1074011: closing sys.std{out,err} now causes a flush() and
Martin v. Löwis8e3ca8a2005-01-23 09:41:49 +00002728 an ferror() call.
2729
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00002730- min() and max() now support key= arguments with the same meaning as in

2743 statement occurs after anything other than a doc string.
2744
Neil Schemenauercf52c072005-08-12 17:34:58 +00002745- Change the %s format specifier for str objects so that it returns a
2746 unicode instance if the argument is not an instance of basestring and
2747 calling __str__ on the argument returns a unicode instance.
2748
Tim Petersf4e69282006-02-27 17:15:31 +00002749- Patch #1413181: changed ``PyThreadState_Delete()`` to forget about the
2750 current thread state when the auto-GIL-state machinery knows about
2751 it (since the thread state is being deleted, continuing to remember it
2752 can't help, but can hurt if another thread happens to get created with
2753 the same thread id).

Georg Brandl828fdef2006-04-01 08:59:03 +00002964 a DB-API interface in the standard library. You'll need sqlite 3.0.8 or
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002965 later to build this - if you have an earlier version, the C extension
Anthony Baxterc51ee692006-04-01 00:57:31 +00002966 module will not be built.

2991
Barry Warsaw4d90bbd2006-03-22 02:45:50 +00002992- email 4.0 package now integrated. This is largely the same as the email 3.0
2993 package that was included in Python 2.3, except that PEP 8 module names are
2994 now used (e.g. mail.message instead of email.Message). The MIME classes
2995 have been moved to a subpackage (e.g. email.mime.text instead of
2996 email.MIMEText). The old names are still supported for now. Several
2997 deprecated Message methods have been removed and lots of bugs have been
2998 fixed. More details can be found in the email package documentation.

3272
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00003273- Enhancements to the csv module:
3274
3275 + Dialects are now validated by the underlying C code, better
Georg Brandl7eb4b7d2005-07-22 21:49:32 +00003276 reflecting its capabilities, and improving its compliance with
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00003277 PEP 305.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00003278 + Dialect parameter parsing has been re-implemented to improve error
3279 reporting.
3280 + quotechar=None and quoting=QUOTE_NONE now work the way PEP 305
3281 dictates.
3282 + the parser now removes the escapechar prefix from escaped characters.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00003283 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the writer now tests for numeric
Andrew M. Kuchling6db67822006-04-18 14:04:57 +00003284 types, rather than any object that can be represented as a numeric.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00003285 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the reader now casts unquoted fields
3286 to floats.
Andrew McNamaraf69d94f2005-01-13 11:30:54 +00003287 + reader now allows \r characters to be quoted (previously it only allowed
3288 \n to be quoted).
Andrew McNamarac89f2842005-01-12 07:44:42 +00003289 + writer doublequote handling improved.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00003290 + Dialect classes passed to the module are no longer instantiated by
3291 the module before being parsed (the former validation scheme required
3292 this, but the mechanism was unreliable).
3293 + The dialect registry now contains instances of the internal
3294 C-coded dialect type, rather than references to python objects.
3295 + the internal c-coded dialect type is now immutable.
3296 + register_dialect now accepts the same keyword dialect specifications
3297 as the reader and writer, allowing the user to register dialects
3298 without first creating a dialect class.
3299 + a configurable limit to the size of parsed fields has been added -
3300 previously, an unmatched quote character could result in the entire
3301 file being read into the field buffer before an error was reported.
Andrew McNamara31d88962005-01-12 03:45:10 +00003302 + A new module method csv.field_size_limit() has been added that sets
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00003303 the parser field size limit (returning the former limit). The initial
3304 limit is 128kB.
Andrew McNamara7f2053e2005-01-12 11:17:16 +00003305 + A line_num attribute has been added to the reader object, which tracks
3306 the number of lines read from the source iterator. This is not
3307 the same as the number of records returned, as records can span
3308 multiple lines.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00003309 + reader and writer objects were not being registered with the cyclic-GC.
3310 This has been fixed.
3311
Brett Cannone6539c42005-01-08 02:43:53 +00003312- _DummyThread objects in the threading module now delete self.__block that is
3313 inherited from _Thread since it uses up a lock allocated by 'thread'. The
3314 lock primitives tend to be limited in number and thus should not be wasted on
3315 a _DummyThread object. Fixes bug #1089632.
3316
Raymond Hettinger97db05d2005-01-07 08:15:41 +00003317- The imghdr module now detects Exif files.
3318

3320 (Bug #951915).
3321
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00003322- locale.py now uses an updated locale alias table (built using
3323 Tools/i18n/makelocalealias.py, a tool to parse the X11 locale
3324 alias file); the encoding lookup was enhanced to use Python's
Andrew M. Kuchling88b85822005-08-23 00:57:07 +00003325 encoding alias table.
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00003326
Raymond Hettinger3557f422004-12-07 12:02:02 +00003327- moved deprecated modules to Lib/lib-old: whrandom, tzparse, statcache.
3328
Raymond Hettingera6b45cc2004-12-07 07:05:57 +00003329- the pickle module no longer accepts the deprecated None option in the
3330 args tuple returned by __reduce__().
3331
Brett Cannon84667c02004-12-07 03:25:18 +00003332- optparse now optionally imports gettext. This allows its use in setup.py.

3341
Raymond Hettinger664347b2004-12-04 21:21:53 +00003342- unittest.TestCase.run() and unittest.TestSuite.run() can now be successfully
3343 extended or overridden by subclasses. Formerly, the subclassed method would
3344 be ignored by the rest of the module. (Bug #1078905).
3345
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00003346- heapq.nsmallest() and heapq.nlargest() now support key= arguments with
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00003347 the same meaning as in list.sort().
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00003348
Walter Dörwald36733692004-12-22 12:50:50 +00003349- Bug #1076985: ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` now calls ``read()`` only
3350 once when a size argument is given. This prevents a buffer overflow in the
3351 tokenizer with very long source lines.
3352
Barry Warsaw538561e2006-01-01 21:48:54 +00003353- Bug #1083110: ``zlib.decompress.flush()`` would segfault if called
3354 immediately after creating the object, without any intervening
3355 ``.decompress()`` calls.
Andrew M. Kuchling3b585b32004-12-28 20:10:48 +00003356
Skip Montanaro05885812005-01-16 20:48:27 +00003357- The reconvert.quote function can now emit triple-quoted strings. The

Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00003359
Walter Dörwaldaf3b39a2005-02-18 13:22:43 +00003360- ``UserString.MutableString`` now supports negative indices in
3361 ``__setitem__`` and ``__delitem__``
3362
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00003363- Bug #1149508: ``textwrap`` now handles hyphenated numbers (eg. "2004-03-05")
3364 correctly.
3365
Walter Dörwaldbc8e6422005-04-21 21:32:03 +00003366- Partial fixes for SF bugs #1163244 and #1175396: If a chunk read by
3367 ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` has a trailing "\r", read one more
3368 character even if the user has passed a size parameter to get a proper
3369 line ending. Remove the special handling of a "\r\n" that has been split
3370 between two lines.
3371
Walter Dörwalda47d1c02005-08-30 10:23:14 +00003372- Bug #1251300: On UCS-4 builds the "unicode-internal" codec will now complain
3373 about illegal code points. The codec now supports PEP 293 style error
3374 handlers.
3375
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00003376- Bug #1235646: ``codecs.StreamRecoder.next()`` now reencodes the data it reads
Walter Dörwaldc5238b82005-09-01 11:56:53 +00003377 from the input stream, so that the output is a byte string in the correct
3378 encoding instead of a unicode string.
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00003379
Gustavo Niemeyer6fa0c5a2005-09-14 08:54:39 +00003380- Bug #1202493: Fixing SRE parser to handle '{}' as perl does, rather than

Walter Dörwald09f0dd52005-11-21 19:10:07 +00003386- ` uu.encode()`` and ``uu.decode()`` now support unicode filenames.
3387
Gustavo Niemeyer548148812006-01-31 18:34:13 +00003388- Patch #1413711: Certain patterns of differences were making difflib
3389 touch the recursion limit.
3390
Walter Dörwald58917a62006-03-31 15:26:22 +00003391- Bug #947906: An object oriented interface has been added to the calendar
3392 module. It's possible to generate HTML calendar now and the module can be
Walter Dörwald48d5e502006-04-01 07:57:00 +00003393 called as a script (e.g. via ``python -mcalendar``). Localized month and
3394 weekday names can be ouput (even if an exotic encoding is used) using
3395 special classes that use unicode.

Brett Cannon08cd5982005-04-24 22:26:38 +00003422- EXTRA_CFLAGS has been introduced as an environment variable to hold compiler
3423 flags that change binary compatibility. Changes were also made to
3424 distutils.sysconfig to also use the environment variable when used during
Martin v. Löwisd7c795e2005-04-25 07:14:03 +00003425 compilation of the interpreter and of C extensions through distutils.

Bob Ippolitoed233462005-03-29 13:47:59 +00003427- SF patch 1171735: Darwin 8's headers are anal about POSIX compliance,
3428 and linking has changed (prebinding is now deprecated, and libcc_dynamic
3429 no longer exists). This configure patch makes things right.

3432
Brett Cannon46d96232005-02-16 00:07:19 +00003433- spwdmodule.c is built only if either HAVE_GETSPNAM or HAVE_HAVE_GETSPENT is
3434 defined. Discovered as a result of not being able to build on OS X.
3435
Brett Cannon516592f2004-12-07 00:42:59 +00003436- setup.py now uses the directories specified in LDFLAGS using the -L option
3437 and in CPPFLAGS using the -I option for adding library and include
3438 directories, respectively, for compiling extension modules against. This has
3439 led to the core being compiled using the values in CPPFLAGS. It also removes
3440 the need for the special-casing of both DarwinPorts and Fink for darwin since
3441 the proper directories can be specified in LDFLAGS (``-L/sw/lib`` for Fink,
3442 ``-L/opt/local/lib`` for DarwinPorts) and CPPFLAGS (``-I/sw/include`` for
3443 Fink, ``-I/opt/local/include`` for DarwinPorts).
3444
Brett Cannon43802422005-02-10 20:48:03 +00003445- Test in configure.in that checks for tzset no longer dependent on tm->tm_zone
3446 to exist in the struct (not required by either ISO C nor the UNIX 2 spec).
3447 Tests for sanity in tzname when HAVE_TZNAME defined were also defined.
3448 Closes bug #1096244. Thanks Gregory Bond.

3451-----
3452
Tim Petersc9d78aa2006-03-26 23:27:58 +00003453- ``PyMem_{Del, DEL}`` and ``PyMem_{Free, FREE}`` no longer map to
3454 ``PyObject_{Free, FREE}``. They map to the system ``free()`` now. If memory
3455 is obtained via the ``PyObject_`` family, it must be released via the
3456 ``PyObject_`` family, and likewise for the ``PyMem_`` family. This has
3457 always been officially true, but when Python's small-object allocator was
3458 introduced, an attempt was made to cater to a few extension modules
3459 discovered at the time that obtained memory via ``PyObject_New`` but
3460 released it via ``PyMem_DEL``. It's years later, and if such code still
3461 exists it will fail now (probably with segfaults, but calling wrong
3462 low-level memory management functions can yield many symptoms).
3463
Raymond Hettingerbeb31012005-08-16 03:47:52 +00003464- Added a C API for set and frozenset objects.
3465

3467
Walter Dörwaldd1c1e102005-10-06 20:29:57 +00003468- Patch #1313939: PyUnicode_DecodeCharmap() accepts a unicode string as the
3469 mapping argument now. This string is used as a mapping table. Byte values
3470 greater than the length of the string and 0xFFFE are treated as undefined
3471 mappings.
