12Core and builtins
13-----------------
14
Georg Brandlb9f4ad32006-10-29 18:31:42 +000015- Bug #1576657: when setting a KeyError for a tuple key, make sure that
16 the tuple isn't used as the "exception arguments tuple".
17
Neal Norwitz21997af2006-10-28 21:19:07 +000018- Bug #1565514, SystemError not raised on too many nested blocks.

Thomas Hellerdf08f0b2006-10-27 18:31:36 +000020- Bug #1576174: WindowsError now displays the windows error code
21 again, no longer the posix error code.
22
Martin v. Löwisb5bc5372006-10-27 06:16:31 +000023- Patch #1549049: Support long values in structmember, issue warnings

27 and inline unconditional jumps to returns.
28
Georg Brandl2c1375c2006-10-12 11:27:59 +000029- Bug #1545497: when given an explicit base, int() did ignore NULs
30 embedded in the string to convert.
31
Georg Brandl846f73a2006-10-08 07:11:54 +000032- Bug #1569998: break inside a try statement (outside a loop) is now
33 recognized and rejected.
34
Armin Rigo7ccbca92006-10-04 12:17:45 +000035- list.pop(x) accepts any object x following the __index__ protocol.
36
37- Fix some leftovers from the conversion from int to Py_ssize_t
38 (relevant to strings and sequences of more than 2**31 items).
39
40- A number of places, including integer negation and absolute value,
41 were fixed to not rely on undefined behaviour of the C compiler
42 anymore.

46
Georg Brandl5d59c092006-09-30 08:43:30 +000047- Patch #1567691: super() and new.instancemethod() now don't accept
48 keyword arguments any more (previously they accepted them, but didn't
49 use them).

Georg Brandla10d3af2006-09-24 12:35:36 +000051- Fix a bug in the parser's future statement handling that led to "with"
52 not being recognized as a keyword after, e.g., this statement:

60
Brett Cannon9adeab72006-09-20 18:34:28 +000061- Bug #1551432: Exceptions do not define an explicit __unicode__ method. This
62 allows calling unicode() on exceptions classes directly to succeed.
63
Georg Brandlec6c2df2006-09-11 09:38:35 +000064- Make _PyGILState_NoteThreadState() static, it was not used anywhere
65 outside of pystate.c and should not be necessary.

73
Tim Petersc10c9d02006-09-05 02:18:09 +000074- Overflow checking code in integer division ran afoul of new gcc

293Core and builtins
294-----------------
295
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000296- Unicode objects will no longer raise an exception when being
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000297 compared equal or unequal to a string and a UnicodeDecodeError
298 exception occurs, e.g. as result of a decoding failure.
Neal Norwitz56423e52006-08-13 18:11:08 +0000299
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000300 Instead, the equal (==) and unequal (!=) comparison operators will
301 now issue a UnicodeWarning and interpret the two objects as
302 unequal. The UnicodeWarning can be filtered as desired using
303 the warning framework, e.g. silenced completely, turned into an
304 exception, logged, etc.
305
306 Note that compare operators other than equal and unequal will still
307 raise UnicodeDecodeError exceptions as they've always done.
Neal Norwitz8a87f5d2006-08-12 17:03:09 +0000308
Marc-André Lemburg757ea272006-08-14 11:44:34 +0000309- Fix segfault when doing string formatting on subclasses of long.
310

312 with new-style classes.
313
314- Fix bug related to __len__ functions returning negative values with
315 classic classes.
316
317- Patch #1538606, Fix __index__() clipping. There were some problems
318 discovered with the API and how integers that didn't fit into Py_ssize_t
319 were handled. This patch attempts to provide enough alternatives
320 to effectively use __index__.
321
Martin v. Löwisab2f8f72006-08-09 07:57:39 +0000322- Bug #1536021: __hash__ may now return long int; the final hash

331 the Python dll again.
332
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000333- Bug #1191458: tracing over for loops now produces a line event
334 on each iteration. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc
335 magic number. This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5c1
336 will be regenerated.
337
Neal Norwitz0cbd8052006-08-04 05:09:28 +0000338- Bug #1333982: string/number constants were inappropriately stored

350
Marc-André Lemburg574cfea2006-08-16 16:11:01 +0000351- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0. The change to
352 keep it programmatically in sync with the Python version running
353 the code (introduced in 2.5b3) has been reverted. It will continue
354 to be maintained manually as static string literal.

Neal Norwitzf71ec5a2006-07-30 06:57:04 +0000462- Bug #1515471: string.replace() accepts character buffers again.
463
Neal Norwitz07aadb12006-07-30 06:55:48 +0000464- Add PyErr_WarnEx() so C code can pass the stacklevel to warnings.warn().
465 This provides the proper warning for struct.pack().
466 PyErr_Warn() is now deprecated in favor of PyErr_WarnEx().
467
Neal Norwitz0d62a062006-07-30 06:53:31 +0000468- Patch #1531113: Fix augmented assignment with yield expressions.
469 Also fix a SystemError when trying to assign to yield expressions.
470
Phillip J. Ebyf7575d02006-07-28 21:12:07 +0000471- Bug #1529871: The speed enhancement patch #921466 broke Python's compliance
472 with PEP 302. This was fixed by adding an ``imp.NullImporter`` type that is
473 used in ``sys.path_importer_cache`` to cache non-directory paths and avoid
474 excessive filesystem operations during imports.
475
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +0000476- Bug #1521947: When checking for overflow, ``PyOS_strtol()`` used some
477 operations on signed longs that are formally undefined by C.
478 Unfortunately, at least one compiler now cares about that, so complicated
479 the code to make that compiler happy again.
480
Martin v. Löwis982e9fe2006-07-24 12:54:17 +0000481- Bug #1524310: Properly report errors from FindNextFile in os.listdir.

495
Andrew M. Kuchling93c928e2006-07-26 17:19:39 +0000496- Bug #1520864: unpacking singleton tuples in a 'for' loop (for x, in) works
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000497 again. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc magic number.
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000498 This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5b3 will be regenerated.

Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000501 The Python core compiles again, and, in a build without threads, the

519
Georg Brandle34ac7c2006-07-30 11:07:23 +0000520- Bug #1002398: The documentation for os.path.sameopenfile now correctly
521 refers to file descriptors, not file objects.
522
Tim Petersc10c9d02006-09-05 02:18:09 +0000523- The renaming of the xml package to xmlcore, and the import hackery done
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000524 to make it appear at both names, has been removed. Bug #1511497,

529
Tim Peters6f681472006-07-27 23:44:37 +0000530- Bug #1529297: The rewrite of doctest for Python 2.4 unintentionally
531 lost that tests are sorted by name before being run. This rarely
532 matters for well-written tests, but can create baffling symptoms if
533 side effects from one test to the next affect outcomes. ``DocTestFinder``

553
Martin v. Löwis426f4a12006-07-18 17:46:31 +0000554- Patch #1524429: Use repr() instead of backticks in Tkinter again.
555
Brett Cannoncaebe222006-07-18 04:41:36 +0000556- Bug #1520914: Change time.strftime() to accept a zero for any position in its
557 argument tuple. For arguments where zero is illegal, the value is forced to
558 the minimum value that is correct. This is to support an undocumented but
559 common way people used to fill in inconsequential information in the time
560 tuple pre-2.4.
561
Bob Ippolito5ea4bf12006-07-15 16:53:15 +0000562- Patch #1220874: Update the binhex module for Mach-O.
563
Barry Warsawb110bad2006-07-21 14:51:07 +0000564- The email package has improved RFC 2231 support, specifically for
565 recognizing the difference between encoded (name*0*=<blah>) and non-encoded
566 (name*0=<blah>) parameter continuations. This may change the types of
567 values returned from email.message.Message.get_param() and friends.
568 Specifically in some cases where non-encoded continuations were used,
569 get_param() used to return a 3-tuple of (None, None, string) whereas now it
570 will just return the string (since non-encoded continuations don't have
571 charset and language parts).
572
573 Also, whereas % values were decoded in all parameter continuations, they are
574 now only decoded in encoded parameter parts.
575
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +0000576- Bug #1517990: IDLE keybindings on MacOS X now work correctly
577
578- Bug #1517996: IDLE now longer shows the default Tk menu when a
579 path browser, class browser or debugger is the frontmost window on MacOS X
580
Barry Warsaw00decd72006-07-27 23:43:15 +0000581- Patch #1520294: Support for getset and member descriptors in types.py,
582 inspect.py, and pydoc.py. Specifically, this allows for querying the type
583 of an object against these built-in types and more importantly, for getting
584 their docstrings printed in the interactive interpreter's help() function.

Thomas Hellerce049a02006-07-14 17:51:14 +0000605- Patch #1521817: Index range checking on ctypes arrays containing
606 exactly one element enabled again. This allows iterating over these
607 arrays, without the need to check the array size before.
608
Thomas Heller6e1ad2e2006-07-13 17:05:13 +0000609- Bug #1521375: When the code in ctypes.util.find_library was
Andrew M. Kuchlingb7eca832006-07-13 17:37:26 +0000610 run with root privileges, it could overwrite or delete
Thomas Heller2bdf29e2006-07-13 17:01:14 +0000611 /dev/null in certain cases; this is now fixed.
612
Thomas Heller47d7a062006-07-12 08:43:47 +0000613- Bug #1467450: On Mac OS X 10.3, RTLD_GLOBAL is now used as the
614 default mode for loading shared libraries in ctypes.
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000615
Thomas Hellerb4dc2ef2006-07-13 09:53:47 +0000616- Because of a misspelled preprocessor symbol, ctypes was always
617 compiled without thread support; this is now fixed.
618
Gregory P. Smith641cddf2006-07-28 01:35:25 +0000619- pybsddb Bug #1527939: bsddb module DBEnv dbremove and dbrename
620 methods now allow their database parameter to be None as the
621 sleepycat API allows.
622
Matt Flemingec926502006-07-28 11:27:27 +0000623- Bug #1526460: Fix socketmodule compile on NetBSD as it has a different
624 bluetooth API compared with Linux and FreeBSD.
625
Brett Cannonf23ad3d2006-07-25 17:32:20 +0000626Tests
627-----
628
629- Bug #1501330: Change test_ossaudiodev to be much more tolerant in terms of
630 how long the test file should take to play. Now accepts taking 2.93 secs
631 (exact time) +/- 10% instead of the hard-coded 3.1 sec.
632
Georg Brandl4793aa32006-07-28 18:31:39 +0000633- Patch #1529686: The standard tests ``test_defaultdict``, ``test_iterlen``,
634 ``test_uuid`` and ``test_email_codecs`` didn't actually run any tests when
635 run via ``regrtest.py``. Now they do.

641
Ronald Oussoren26cad082006-08-01 21:00:57 +0000642Mac
643---
644
645- PythonLauncher now works correctly when the path to the script contains
646 characters that are treated specially by the shell (such as quotes).
647
648- Bug #1527397: PythonLauncher now launches scripts with the working directory
649 set to the directory that contains the script instead of the user home
Tim Peters4643c2f2006-08-10 22:45:34 +0000650 directory. That latter was an implementation accident and not what users

663 again evaluates to a int object, not a long.
664
Neil Schemenauer0e07b602006-07-09 16:16:34 +0000665- Bug #1501934: The scope of global variables that are locally assigned
666 using augmented assignment is now correctly determined.
667
Martin v. Löwisd5cfa542006-07-03 13:47:40 +0000668- Bug #927248: Recursive method-wrapper objects can now safely
669 be released.
670

672 and atof().
673
Hye-Shik Change6a1cb92006-06-23 21:16:18 +0000674- Bug #1511381: codec_getstreamcodec() in codec.c is corrected to
675 omit a default "error" argument for NULL pointer. This allows
676 the parser to take a codec from cjkcodecs again.
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +0000677
Neal Norwitzfb48afa2006-07-08 05:31:37 +0000678- Bug #1519018: 'as' is now validated properly in import statements.
679
Neal Norwitz28746ab2006-07-09 22:14:42 +0000680- On 64 bit systems, int literals that use less than 64 bits are
681 now ints rather than longs.
682
Neal Norwitzed657552006-07-10 00:04:44 +0000683- Bug #1512814, Fix incorrect lineno's when code at module scope
684 started after line 256.
685
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +0000686- New function ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dict mapping thread
687 id to topmost thread stack frame. This is for expert use, and is
688 especially useful for debugging application deadlocks. The functionality
689 was previously available in Fazal Majid's ``threadframe`` extension
690 module, but it wasn't possible to do this in a wholly threadsafe way from
691 an extension.

708
Thomas Woutersadd19112006-07-05 11:03:49 +0000709- string.Template() now correctly handles tuple-values. Previously,
710 multi-value tuples would raise an exception and single-value tuples would
711 be treated as the value they contain, instead.
712
Martin v. Löwisede77f52006-07-03 13:01:35 +0000713- Bug #822974: Honor timeout in telnetlib.{expect,read_until}

738
Brett Cannon53ab5b72006-06-22 16:49:14 +0000739- Bug #1510580: The 'warnings' module improperly required that a Warning
740 category be either a types.ClassType and a subclass of Warning. The proper
741 check is just that it is a subclass with Warning as the documentation states.
742
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +0000743- The compiler module now correctly compiles the new try-except-finally
744 statement (bug #1509132).
745
Neal Norwitz60373cd2006-06-22 06:30:50 +0000746- The wsgiref package is now installed properly on Unix.

749 shutdown when fileConfig() was called multiple times.
750
Gerhard Häring762fbd32006-07-02 17:48:30 +0000751- The sqlite3 module did cut off data from the SQLite database at the first
752 null character before sending it to a custom converter. This has been fixed
753 now.
754
Neal Norwitz0f8b31a2006-06-28 06:28:31 +0000755Extension Modules
756-----------------
757
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000758- #1494314: Fix a regression with high-numbered sockets in 2.4.3. This
759 means that select() on sockets > FD_SETSIZE (typically 1024) work again.
760 The patch makes sockets use poll() internally where available.
Anthony Baxter93ab5fa2006-07-11 02:04:09 +0000761
Thomas Hellerb9cb84f2006-07-10 11:17:37 +0000762- Assigning None to pointer type fields in ctypes structures possible
763 overwrote the wrong fields, this is fixed now.
764
765- Fixed a segfault in _ctypes when ctypes.wintypes were imported
766 on non-Windows platforms.
767
768- Bug #1518190: The ctypes.c_void_p constructor now accepts any
769 integer or long, without range checking.
770
771- Patch #1517790: It is now possible to use custom objects in the ctypes
772 foreign function argtypes sequence as long as they provide a from_param
773 method, no longer is it required that the object is a ctypes type.
774
775- The '_ctypes' extension module now works when Python is configured
776 with the --without-threads option.
777
Martin v. Löwisee1e06d2006-07-02 18:44:00 +0000778- Bug #1513646: os.access on Windows now correctly determines write
779 access, again.

782 a KeyboardInterrupt.
783
Neal Norwitza12aa882006-07-06 06:45:08 +0000784- Bug #1296433: parsing XML with a non-default encoding and

793
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +0000794- 'configure' now detects the zlib library the same way as distutils.
Thomas Woutersfc34f6c2006-07-06 10:48:28 +0000795 Previously, the slight difference could cause compilation errors of the
796 'zlib' module on systems with more than one version of zlib.
797
Martin v. Löwis4cbd05c2006-07-06 07:05:21 +0000798- The MSI compileall step was fixed to also support a TARGETDIR
799 with spaces in it.
800
Martin v. Löwis88ef6372006-07-06 06:55:58 +0000801- Bug #1517388: sqlite3.dll is now installed on Windows independent
802 of Tcl/Tk.
803
Neal Norwitzc315a0f2006-06-27 04:28:56 +0000804- Bug #1513032: 'make install' failed on FreeBSD 5.3 due to lib-old

829Core and builtins
830-----------------
831
Georg Brandla56b9152006-06-19 06:35:54 +0000832- Patch #1507676: Error messages returned by invalid abstract object operations
833 (such as iterating over an integer) have been improved and now include the
834 type of the offending object to help with debugging.
835
Brett Cannonea3912b2006-06-13 21:46:41 +0000836- Bug #992017: A classic class that defined a __coerce__() method that returned
837 its arguments swapped would infinitely recurse and segfault the interpreter.
838
Neal Norwitz909eb122006-06-12 02:13:21 +0000839- Fix the socket tests so they can be run concurrently.
840
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +0000841- Removed 5 integers from C frame objects (PyFrameObject).
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +0000842 f_nlocals, f_ncells, f_nfreevars, f_stack_size, f_restricted.
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +0000843
Brett Cannon22565aa2006-06-09 22:31:23 +0000844- Bug #532646: object.__call__() will continue looking for the __call__
845 attribute on objects until one without one is found. This leads to recursion
846 when you take a class and set its __call__ attribute to an instance of the
847 class. Originally fixed for classic classes, but this fix is for new-style.
848 Removes the infinite_rec_3 crasher.
849
Georg Brandl24250812006-06-09 18:45:48 +0000850- The string and unicode methods startswith() and endswith() now accept
851 a tuple of prefixes/suffixes to look for. Implements RFE #1491485.
852
Brett Cannonde3b0522006-06-08 17:00:45 +0000853- Buffer objects, at the C level, never used the char buffer
854 implementation even when the char buffer for the wrapped object was
855 explicitly requested (originally returned the read or write buffer).
856 Now a TypeError is raised if the char buffer is not present but is
857 requested.
858
Georg Brandlddbaa662006-06-04 21:56:52 +0000859- Patch #1346214: Statements like "if 0: suite" are now again optimized
860 away like they were in Python 2.4.
861
Georg Brandlb7c8f542006-05-27 12:30:25 +0000862- Builtin exceptions are now full-blown new-style classes instead of
863 instances pretending to be classes, which speeds up exception handling
864 by about 80% in comparison to 2.5a2.
865
Martin v. Löwisd004fc82006-05-27 08:36:52 +0000866- Patch #1494554: Update unicodedata.numeric and unicode.isnumeric to
867 Unicode 4.1.
868
Georg Brandlf4ef1162006-05-26 18:03:31 +0000869- Patch #921466: sys.path_importer_cache is now used to cache valid and
870 invalid file paths for the built-in import machinery which leads to
871 fewer open calls on startup.
872
Tim Peters696cf432006-05-24 21:10:40 +0000873- Patch #1442927: ``long(str, base)`` is now up to 6x faster for non-power-
874 of-2 bases. The largest speedup is for inputs with about 1000 decimal
875 digits. Conversion from non-power-of-2 bases remains quadratic-time in
876 the number of input digits (it was and remains linear-time for bases
877 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32).
878
Tim Petersb713ec22006-05-23 18:45:30 +0000879- Bug #1334662: ``int(string, base)`` could deliver a wrong answer
880 when ``base`` was not 2, 4, 8, 10, 16 or 32, and ``string`` represented
881 an integer close to ``sys.maxint``. This was repaired by patch
882 #1335972, which also gives a nice speedup.
883
Richard Jonescebbefc2006-05-23 18:28:17 +0000884- Patch #1337051: reduced size of frame objects.
885
886- PyErr_NewException now accepts a tuple of base classes as its
887 "base" parameter.
888
Richard Jones7c88dcc2006-05-23 10:37:38 +0000889- Patch #876206: function call speedup by retaining allocated frame
890 objects.
891
Georg Brandl7b90e162006-05-18 07:01:27 +0000892- Bug #1462152: file() now checks more thoroughly for invalid mode
893 strings and removes a possible "U" before passing the mode to the
894 C library function.
895
Neal Norwitz1004a532006-05-15 07:17:23 +0000896- Patch #1488312, Fix memory alignment problem on SPARC in unicode
897
Neal Norwitz373f0a72006-05-15 07:04:36 +0000898- Bug #1487966: Fix SystemError with conditional expression in assignment
899
Martin v. Löwis879768d2006-05-11 13:28:43 +0000900- WindowsError now has two error code attributes: errno, which carries
901 the error values from errno.h, and winerror, which carries the error
902 values from winerror.h. Previous versions put the winerror.h values
903 (from GetLastError()) into the errno attribute.
904
Martin v. Löwis77736712006-05-04 05:51:03 +0000905- Patch #1475845: Raise IndentationError for unexpected indent.
906
Neal Norwitzc4edb0e2006-05-02 04:43:14 +0000907- Patch #1479181: split open() and file() from being aliases for each other.
908
Tim Peters44bd9862006-06-01 13:49:23 +0000909- Patch #1497053 & bug #1275608: Exceptions occurring in ``__eq__()``
910 methods were always silently ignored by dictionaries when comparing keys.
911 They are now passed through (except when using the C API function
912 ``PyDict_GetItem()``, whose semantics did not change).
913
914- Bug #1456209: In some obscure cases it was possible for a class with a
915 custom ``__eq__()`` method to confuse dict internals when class instances
916 were used as a dict's keys and the ``__eq__()`` method mutated the dict.
917 No, you don't have any code that did this ;-)

Martin v. Löwis3f767792006-06-04 19:36:28 +00001038- Patch #1359618: Speed up charmap encoder by using a trie structure
1039 for lookup.
1040
Tim Petersd609b1a2006-06-02 23:22:51 +00001041- The functions in the ``pprint`` module now sort dictionaries by key
1042 before computing the display. Before 2.5, ``pprint`` sorted a dictionary
1043 if and only if its display required more than one line, although that
1044 wasn't documented. The new behavior increases predictability; e.g.,
1045 using ``pprint.pprint(a_dict)`` in a doctest is now reliable.

1123-----------------
1124
Thomas Heller1b046642006-04-18 18:51:06 +00001125- Bug #1465834: 'bdist_wininst preinstall script support' was fixed
1126 by converting these apis from macros into exported functions again:
1127
1128 PyParser_SimpleParseFile PyParser_SimpleParseString PyRun_AnyFile
1129 PyRun_AnyFileEx PyRun_AnyFileFlags PyRun_File PyRun_FileEx
1130 PyRun_FileFlags PyRun_InteractiveLoop PyRun_InteractiveOne

1132 PyRun_String Py_CompileString
1133
Martin v. Löwis45294a92006-04-18 06:24:08 +00001134- Under COUNT_ALLOCS, types are not necessarily immortal anymore.
1135
Martin v. Löwis19ab6c92006-04-16 18:55:50 +00001136- All uses of PyStructSequence_InitType have been changed to initialize
1137 the type objects only once, even if the interpreter is initialized
1138 multiple times.
1139
Neal Norwitz61546162006-04-14 05:20:28 +00001140- Bug #1454485, array.array('u') could crash the interpreter. This was
1141 due to PyArgs_ParseTuple(args, 'u#', ...) trying to convert buffers (strings)
1142 to unicode when it didn't make sense. 'u#' now requires a unicode string.
1143
1144- Py_UNICODE is unsigned. It was always documented as unsigned, but
1145 due to a bug had a signed value in previous versions.
1146
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001147- Patch #837242: ``id()`` of any Python object always gives a positive
1148 number now, which might be a long integer. ``PyLong_FromVoidPtr`` and
1149 ``PyLong_AsVoidPtr`` have been changed accordingly. Note that it has
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001150 never been correct to implement a ``__hash()__`` method that returns the
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001151 ``id()`` of an object:
Martin v. Löwis0bc2ab92006-04-10 20:28:17 +00001152
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001153 def __hash__(self):
1154 return id(self) # WRONG
1155
1156 because a hash result must be a (short) Python int but it was always
1157 possible for ``id()`` to return a Python long. However, because ``id()``
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001158 could return negative values before, on a 32-bit box an ``id()`` result
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001159 was always usable as a hash value before this patch. That's no longer
1160 necessarily so.
1161
1162- Python on OS X 10.3 and above now uses dlopen() (via dynload_shlib.c)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001163 to load extension modules and now provides the dl module. As a result,
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001164 sys.setdlopenflags() now works correctly on these systems. (SF patch
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001165 #1454844)
1166
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001167- Patch #1463867: enhanced garbage collection to allow cleanup of cycles
1168 involving generators that have paused outside of any ``try`` or ``with``
1169 blocks. (In 2.5a1, a paused generator that was part of a reference
1170 cycle could not be garbage collected, regardless of whether it was
1171 paused in a ``try`` or ``with`` block.)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001172

1178
Georg Brandlbbfe4fa2006-04-11 06:47:43 +00001179- Bug #1467952: os.listdir() now correctly raises an error if readdir()
1180 fails with an error condition.
1181
Gregory P. Smith3adc4aa2006-04-13 19:19:01 +00001182- Fixed bsddb.db.DBError derived exceptions so they can be unpickled.

1184- Bug #1117761: bsddb.*open() no longer raises an exception when using
1185 the cachesize parameter.
1186
1187- Bug #1149413: bsddb.*open() no longer raises an exception when using
1188 a temporary db (file=None) with the 'n' flag to truncate on open.
1189
1190- Bug #1332852: bsddb module minimum BerkeleyDB version raised to 3.3
1191 as older versions cause excessive test failures.
Gregory P. Smith7f5b6f42006-04-08 07:10:51 +00001192
Armin Rigoa9017c32006-04-19 11:50:27 +00001193- Patch #1062014: AF_UNIX sockets under Linux have a special

1201 abusing errno.
1202
Tim Peters711bf302006-04-25 03:31:36 +00001203- Patch #1475231: ``doctest`` has a new ``SKIP`` option, which causes

1205 or exception is ignored).
1206
Nick Coghlanda2268f2006-04-24 04:37:15 +00001207- Fixed contextlib.nested to cope with exceptions being raised and
1208 caught inside exit handlers.
1209
Greg Wardab05edc2006-04-23 03:47:58 +00001210- Updated optparse module to Optik 1.5.1 (allow numeric constants in
1211 hex, octal, or binary; add ``append_const`` action; keep going if
1212 gettext cannot be imported; added ``OptionParser.destroy()`` method;
1213 added ``epilog`` for better help generation).
1214
Tim Peters21fbd572006-04-21 21:18:10 +00001215- Bug #1473760: ``tempfile.TemporaryFile()`` could hang on Windows, when
1216 called from a thread spawned as a side effect of importing a module.
1217
Phillip J. Eby17a35f92006-04-18 16:45:14 +00001218- The pydoc module now supports documenting packages contained in

1286
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001287- The test_contextlib test in 2.5a1 wasn't actually run unless you ran
1288 it separately and by hand. It also wasn't cleaning up its changes to
1289 the current Decimal context.
1290
Thomas Woutersabd08882006-04-26 15:53:30 +00001291- regrtest.py now has a -M option to run tests that test the new limits of
1292 containers, on 64-bit architectures. Running these tests is only sensible
1293 on 64-bit machines with more than two gigabytes of memory. The argument
1294 passed is the maximum amount of memory for the tests to use.

1321-----------------
1322
Nick Coghlan43832302006-04-23 17:04:07 +00001323- PEP 338: -m command line switch now delegates to runpy.run_module
1324 allowing it to support modules in packages and zipfiles
1325
Martin v. Löwisc661b882006-04-20 04:54:23 +00001326- On Windows, .DLL is not an accepted file name extension for
1327 extension modules anymore; extensions are only found if they
1328 end in .PYD.
1329
Martin v. Löwisea62d252006-04-03 10:56:49 +00001330- Bug #1421664: sys.stderr.encoding is now set to the same value as
1331 sys.stdout.encoding.
1332
Neal Norwitz92e212f2006-04-03 04:48:37 +00001333- __import__ accepts keyword arguments.
1334
Georg Brandlccadf842006-03-31 18:54:53 +00001335- Patch #1460496: round() now accepts keyword arguments.
1336
Anthony Baxter262c00a2006-03-30 10:53:17 +00001337- Fixed bug #1459029 - unicode reprs were double-escaped.
1338
Hye-Shik Changd478f342006-03-23 12:32:36 +00001339- Patch #1396919: The system scope threads are reenabled on FreeBSD
1340 5.4 and later versions.
1341
Neal Norwitze98ccf62006-03-23 05:39:47 +00001342- Bug #1115379: Compiling a Unicode string with an encoding declaration
1343 now gives a SyntaxError.
1344
Georg Brandlabd1ff82006-03-18 07:59:59 +00001345- Previously, Python code had no easy way to access the contents of a
1346 cell object. Now, a ``cell_contents`` attribute has been added
1347 (closes patch #1170323).
1348
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001349- Patch #1123430: Python's small-object allocator now returns an arena to
1350 the system ``free()`` when all memory within an arena becomes unused
1351 again. Prior to Python 2.5, arenas (256KB chunks of memory) were never
1352 freed. Some applications will see a drop in virtual memory size now,
1353 especially long-running applications that, from time to time, temporarily
1354 use a large number of small objects. Note that when Python returns an
1355 arena to the platform C's ``free()``, there's no guarantee that the
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001356 platform C library will in turn return that memory to the operating system.
1357 The effect of the patch is to stop making that impossible, and in tests it
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001358 appears to be effective at least on Microsoft C and gcc-based systems.
1359 Thanks to Evan Jones for hard work and patience.
1360
Georg Brandl533ff6f2006-03-08 18:09:27 +00001361- Patch #1434038: property() now uses the getter's docstring if there is
1362 no "doc" argument given. This makes it possible to legitimately use
1363 property() as a decorator to produce a read-only property.
1364
Guido van Rossum9aa37ab2006-03-07 18:54:08 +00001365- PEP 357, patch 1436368: add an __index__ method to int/long and a matching
1366 nb_index slot to the PyNumberMethods struct. The slot is consulted instead
1367 of requiring an int or long in slicing and a few other contexts, enabling
1368 other objects (e.g. Numeric Python's integers) to be used as slice indices.
1369
Neal Norwitz995acdf2006-03-07 05:01:00 +00001370- Fixed various bugs reported by Coverity's Prevent tool.
1371
Brett Cannonbf364092006-03-01 04:25:17 +00001372- PEP 352, patch #1104669: Make exceptions new-style objects. Introduced the
1373 new exception base class, BaseException, which has a new message attribute.
1374 KeyboardInterrupt and SystemExit to directly inherit from BaseException now.
1375 Raising a string exception now raises a DeprecationWarning.
1376
Thomas Woutersfb609f42006-02-28 16:37:25 +00001377- Patch #1438387, PEP 328: relative and absolute imports. Imports can now be
1378 explicitly relative, using 'from .module import name' to mean 'from the same
1379 package as this module is in. Imports without dots still default to the
1380 old relative-then-absolute, unless 'from __future__ import
1381 absolute_import' is used.
1382
Brett Cannona7446e32006-02-27 23:39:10 +00001383- Properly check if 'warnings' raises an exception (usually when a filter set
1384 to "error" is triggered) when raising a warning for raising string
1385 exceptions.
1386
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001387- CO_GENERATOR_ALLOWED is no longer defined. This behavior is the default.
Neal Norwitz0023a2f2006-02-27 23:24:48 +00001388 The name was removed from Include/code.h.
1389
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001390- PEP 308: conditional expressions were added: (x if cond else y).
Neal Norwitzeb651252006-02-27 16:47:12 +00001391
Guido van Rossum1968ad32006-02-25 22:38:04 +00001392- Patch 1433928:
1393 - The copy module now "copies" function objects (as atomic objects).
1394 - dict.__getitem__ now looks for a __missing__ hook before raising
1395 KeyError.
1396
Tim Peters84ef21c2006-02-28 20:39:06 +00001397- PEP 343: with statement implemented. Needs ``from __future__ import
1398 with_statement``. Use of 'with' as a variable will generate a warning.
1399 Use of 'as' as a variable will also generate a warning (unless it's
Neal Norwitz055ec242006-02-28 20:06:49 +00001400 part of an import statement).
Guido van Rossum1a5e21e2006-02-28 21:57:43 +00001401 The following objects have __context__ methods:
1402 - The built-in file type.
1403 - The thread.LockType type.
1404 - The following types defined by the threading module:
1405 Lock, RLock, Condition, Semaphore, BoundedSemaphore.
1406 - The decimal.Context class.
Guido van Rossumc2e20742006-02-27 22:32:47 +00001407
Marc-André Lemburgfe4b34c2006-02-19 15:22:22 +00001408- Fix the encodings package codec search function to only search
1409 inside its own package. Fixes problem reported in patch #1433198.
1410
1411 Note: Codec packages should implement and register their own
1412 codec search function. PEP 100 has the details.
1413
Tim Peters9ea89d22006-06-04 03:26:02 +00001414- PEP 353: Using ``Py_ssize_t`` as the index type.
1415
1416- ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` builds now add ``4*sizeof(size_t)`` bytes of debugging
1417 info to each allocated block, since the ``Py_ssize_t`` changes (PEP 353)
1418 now allow Python to make use of memory blocks exceeding 2**32 bytes for
1419 some purposes on 64-bit boxes. A ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` build was limited
1420 to 4-byte allocations before.
Martin v. Löwis18e16552006-02-15 17:27:45 +00001421
Neal Norwitzfc76d632006-01-10 06:03:13 +00001422- Patch #1400181, fix unicode string formatting to not use the locale.
1423 This is how string objects work. u'%f' could use , instead of .
1424 for the decimal point. Now both strings and unicode always use periods.
1425
Neal Norwitz671b9e32006-01-09 07:07:12 +00001426- Bug #1244610, #1392915, fix build problem on OpenBSD 3.7 and 3.8.
1427 configure would break checking curses.h.
1428
Georg Brandlcd4d1e82005-12-27 17:37:07 +00001429- Bug #959576: The pwd module is now builtin. This allows Python to be
1430 built on UNIX platforms without $HOME set.
1431
Neal Norwitzc10978f2005-12-19 06:07:16 +00001432- Bug #1072182, fix some potential problems if characters are signed.
1433
Neal Norwitz5d0ad502005-12-19 04:27:42 +00001434- Bug #889500, fix line number on SyntaxWarning for global declarations.
1435
Neal Norwitzdb83eb32005-12-18 05:29:30 +00001436- Bug #1378022, UTF-8 files with a leading BOM crashed the interpreter.
1437
Neal Norwitze7214a12005-12-18 05:03:17 +00001438- Support for converting hex strings to floats no longer works.
1439 This was not portable. float('0x3') now raises a ValueError.
1440
Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001441- Patch #1382163: Expose Subversion revision number to Python. New C API

Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001443 is now displayed in interactive prompt banner.
1444
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00001445- Implementation of PEP 341 - Unification of try/except and try/finally.
1446 "except" clauses can now be written together with a "finally" clause in
Neal Norwitz11ca77e2005-12-17 22:24:12 +00001447 one try statement instead of two nested ones. Patch #1355913.
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00001448
Hye-Shik Chang835b2432005-12-17 04:38:31 +00001449- Bug #1379994: Builtin unicode_escape and raw_unicode_escape codec
1450 now encodes backslash correctly.
1451

1456
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001457- SF Bug #1350188, "setdlopenflags" leads to crash upon "import"
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001458 It was possible for dlerror() to return a NULL pointer, so
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001459 it will now use a default error message in this case.
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001460
Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00001461- Replaced most Unicode charmap codecs with new ones using the
1462 new Unicode translate string feature in the builtin charmap
1463 codec; the codecs were created from the mapping tables available
1464 at ftp.unicode.org and contain a few updates (e.g. the Mac OS
1465 encodings now include a mapping for the Apple logo)
1466
Tim Peterse3547fd2005-12-16 23:13:57 +00001467- Added a few more codecs for Mac OS encodings

Georg Brandl80bbf3f2005-09-14 19:38:29 +00001497- SF bug #893549: parsing keyword arguments was broken with a few format
1498 codes.
1499
Guido van Rossum8ee3e5a2005-09-14 18:09:42 +00001500- Changes donated by Elemental Security to make it work on AIX 5.3
1501 with IBM's 64-bit compiler (SF patch #1284289). This also closes SF
1502 bug #105470: test_pwd fails on 64bit system (Opteron).

1509
Martin v. Löwisd35edda2005-08-24 08:39:24 +00001510- Forward UnicodeDecodeError into SyntaxError for source encoding errors.
1511
Barry Warsawe2eca0b2005-08-15 18:14:19 +00001512- SF bug #900092: When tracing (e.g. for hotshot), restore 'return' events for
1513 exceptions that cause a function to exit.
1514
Raymond Hettinger9f1a6792005-07-31 01:16:36 +00001515- The implementation of set() and frozenset() was revised to use its
1516 own internal data structure. Memory consumption is reduced by 1/3
1517 and there are modest speed-ups as well. The API is unchanged.
1518
Tim Petersde7990b2005-07-17 23:45:23 +00001519- SF bug #1238681: freed pointer is used in longobject.c:long_pow().
1520
Michael W. Hudson0edc7a02005-07-12 10:21:19 +00001521- SF bug #1229429: PyObject_CallMethod failed to decrement some
1522 reference counts in some error exit cases.
1523
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001524- SF bug #1185883: Python's small-object memory allocator took over
1525 a block managed by the platform C library whenever a realloc specified
1526 a small new size. However, there's no portable way to know then how
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001527 much of the address space following the pointer is valid, so there's no
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001528 portable way to copy data from the C-managed block into Python's
1529 small-object space without risking a memory fault. Python's small-object
1530 realloc now leaves such blocks under the control of the platform C
1531 realloc.
1532
Michael W. Hudsonb8963812005-07-05 15:21:58 +00001533- SF bug #1232517: An overflow error was not detected properly when

1535
Raymond Hettinger3296e692005-06-29 23:29:56 +00001536- SF bug #1224347: hex longs now print with lowercase letters just
1537 like their int counterparts.
1538
Michael W. Hudson188d4362005-06-20 16:52:57 +00001539- SF bug #1163563: the original fix for bug #1010677 ("thread Module
1540 Breaks PyGILState_Ensure()") broke badly in the case of multiple
1541 interpreter states; back out that fix and do a better job (see
1542 http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-dev/2005-June/054258.html
1543 for a longer write-up of the problem).
1544
Michael W. Hudsondf888462005-06-03 14:41:55 +00001545- SF patch #1180995: marshal now uses a binary format by default when
1546 serializing floats.
1547
Michael W. Hudsonda85a902005-06-01 11:34:22 +00001548- SF patch #1181301: on platforms that appear to use IEEE 754 floats,
1549 the routines that promise to produce IEEE 754 binary representations
1550 of floats now simply copy bytes around.
1551
Skip Montanarobbf12ba2005-05-20 03:07:06 +00001552- bug #967182: disallow opening files with 'wU' or 'aU' as specified by PEP
1553 278.
1554
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001555- patch #1109424: int, long, float, complex, and unicode now check for the
1556 proper magic slot for type conversions when subclassed. Previously the
1557 magic slot was ignored during conversion. Semantics now match the way
1558 subclasses of str always behaved. int/long/float, conversion of an instance
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00001559 to the base class has been moved to the proper nb_* magic slot and out of
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001560 PyNumber_*().
Neal Norwitzcfba5f82006-04-25 05:05:03 +00001561 Thanks Walter Drwald.
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001562
Barry Warsawc8d907c2005-04-19 23:43:40 +00001563- Descriptors defined in C with a PyGetSetDef structure, where the setter is
1564 NULL, now raise an AttributeError when attempting to set or delete the
1565 attribute. Previously a TypeError was raised, but this was inconsistent
1566 with the equivalent pure-Python implementation.
1567
Michael W. Hudson774479c2005-04-18 08:46:17 +00001568- It is now safe to call PyGILState_Release() before
1569 PyEval_InitThreads() (note that if there is reason to believe there
1570 are multiple threads around you still must call PyEval_InitThreads()
1571 before using the Python API; this fix is for extension modules that
1572 have no way of knowing if Python is multi-threaded yet).
1573
Michael W. Hudsone3afc592005-04-07 10:11:19 +00001574- Typing Ctrl-C whilst raw_input() was waiting in a build with threads
1575 disabled caused a crash.
1576
Michael W. Hudsonb330adf2005-03-31 09:35:44 +00001577- Bug #1165306: instancemethod_new allowed the creation of a method
1578 with im_class == im_self == NULL, which caused a crash when called.
1579
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001580- Move exception finalisation later in the shutdown process - this

1584
Brett Cannon409d8f22005-03-05 06:47:57 +00001585- Defining a class with empty parentheses is now allowed
Brett Cannonf4189912005-04-09 02:30:16 +00001586 (e.g., ``class C(): pass`` is no longer a syntax error).
1587 Patch #1176012 added support to the 'parser' module and 'compiler' package
1588 (thanks to logistix for that added support).

1602
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001603- Bug #1074011: closing sys.std{out,err} now causes a flush() and
Martin v. Löwis8e3ca8a2005-01-23 09:41:49 +00001604 an ferror() call.

1619 statement occurs after anything other than a doc string.
1620
Neil Schemenauercf52c072005-08-12 17:34:58 +00001621- Change the %s format specifier for str objects so that it returns a

1623 calling __str__ on the argument returns a unicode instance.
1624
Tim Petersf4e69282006-02-27 17:15:31 +00001625- Patch #1413181: changed ``PyThreadState_Delete()`` to forget about the
1626 current thread state when the auto-GIL-state machinery knows about
1627 it (since the thread state is being deleted, continuing to remember it
1628 can't help, but can hurt if another thread happens to get created with
1629 the same thread id).

Georg Brandl828fdef2006-04-01 08:59:03 +00001840 a DB-API interface in the standard library. You'll need sqlite 3.0.8 or
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001841 later to build this - if you have an earlier version, the C extension
Anthony Baxterc51ee692006-04-01 00:57:31 +00001842 module will not be built.

1867
Barry Warsaw4d90bbd2006-03-22 02:45:50 +00001868- email 4.0 package now integrated. This is largely the same as the email 3.0
1869 package that was included in Python 2.3, except that PEP 8 module names are
1870 now used (e.g. mail.message instead of email.Message). The MIME classes
1871 have been moved to a subpackage (e.g. email.mime.text instead of
1872 email.MIMEText). The old names are still supported for now. Several
1873 deprecated Message methods have been removed and lots of bugs have been
1874 fixed. More details can be found in the email package documentation.

1880 as C functions PyCodec_IncrementalEncoder() and PyCodec_IncrementalDecoder()
1881 have been added.

2148
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002149- Enhancements to the csv module:
2150
2151 + Dialects are now validated by the underlying C code, better
Georg Brandl7eb4b7d2005-07-22 21:49:32 +00002152 reflecting its capabilities, and improving its compliance with
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002153 PEP 305.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002154 + Dialect parameter parsing has been re-implemented to improve error
2155 reporting.
2156 + quotechar=None and quoting=QUOTE_NONE now work the way PEP 305
2157 dictates.
2158 + the parser now removes the escapechar prefix from escaped characters.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002159 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the writer now tests for numeric
Andrew M. Kuchling6db67822006-04-18 14:04:57 +00002160 types, rather than any object that can be represented as a numeric.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002161 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the reader now casts unquoted fields
2162 to floats.
Andrew McNamaraf69d94f2005-01-13 11:30:54 +00002163 + reader now allows \r characters to be quoted (previously it only allowed
2164 \n to be quoted).
Andrew McNamarac89f2842005-01-12 07:44:42 +00002165 + writer doublequote handling improved.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002166 + Dialect classes passed to the module are no longer instantiated by
2167 the module before being parsed (the former validation scheme required
2168 this, but the mechanism was unreliable).
2169 + The dialect registry now contains instances of the internal
2170 C-coded dialect type, rather than references to python objects.
2171 + the internal c-coded dialect type is now immutable.
2172 + register_dialect now accepts the same keyword dialect specifications
2173 as the reader and writer, allowing the user to register dialects
2174 without first creating a dialect class.
2175 + a configurable limit to the size of parsed fields has been added -
2176 previously, an unmatched quote character could result in the entire
2177 file being read into the field buffer before an error was reported.
Andrew McNamara31d88962005-01-12 03:45:10 +00002178 + A new module method csv.field_size_limit() has been added that sets
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002179 the parser field size limit (returning the former limit). The initial
2180 limit is 128kB.
Andrew McNamara7f2053e2005-01-12 11:17:16 +00002181 + A line_num attribute has been added to the reader object, which tracks
2182 the number of lines read from the source iterator. This is not
2183 the same as the number of records returned, as records can span
2184 multiple lines.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002185 + reader and writer objects were not being registered with the cyclic-GC.
2186 This has been fixed.
2187
Brett Cannone6539c42005-01-08 02:43:53 +00002188- _DummyThread objects in the threading module now delete self.__block that is
2189 inherited from _Thread since it uses up a lock allocated by 'thread'. The
2190 lock primitives tend to be limited in number and thus should not be wasted on
2191 a _DummyThread object. Fixes bug #1089632.
2192
Raymond Hettinger97db05d2005-01-07 08:15:41 +00002193- The imghdr module now detects Exif files.
2194
Raymond Hettinger6065d322004-12-20 23:51:53 +00002195- StringIO.truncate() now correctly adjusts the size attribute.
2196 (Bug #951915).
2197
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002198- locale.py now uses an updated locale alias table (built using
2199 Tools/i18n/makelocalealias.py, a tool to parse the X11 locale
2200 alias file); the encoding lookup was enhanced to use Python's
Andrew M. Kuchling88b85822005-08-23 00:57:07 +00002201 encoding alias table.
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002202
Raymond Hettinger3557f422004-12-07 12:02:02 +00002203- moved deprecated modules to Lib/lib-old: whrandom, tzparse, statcache.
2204
Raymond Hettingera6b45cc2004-12-07 07:05:57 +00002205- the pickle module no longer accepts the deprecated None option in the
2206 args tuple returned by __reduce__().
2207
Brett Cannon84667c02004-12-07 03:25:18 +00002208- optparse now optionally imports gettext. This allows its use in setup.py.
2209
Raymond Hettinger3489cad2004-12-05 05:20:42 +00002210- the pickle module no longer uses the deprecated bin parameter.

2215
Raymond Hettingerf3fa9462004-12-05 01:58:09 +00002216- the filecmp module no longer uses the deprecated use_statcache argument.
2217
Raymond Hettinger664347b2004-12-04 21:21:53 +00002218- unittest.TestCase.run() and unittest.TestSuite.run() can now be successfully
2219 extended or overridden by subclasses. Formerly, the subclassed method would
2220 be ignored by the rest of the module. (Bug #1078905).
2221
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002222- heapq.nsmallest() and heapq.nlargest() now support key= arguments with
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00002223 the same meaning as in list.sort().
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002224
Walter Dörwald36733692004-12-22 12:50:50 +00002225- Bug #1076985: ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` now calls ``read()`` only
2226 once when a size argument is given. This prevents a buffer overflow in the
2227 tokenizer with very long source lines.
2228
Barry Warsaw538561e2006-01-01 21:48:54 +00002229- Bug #1083110: ``zlib.decompress.flush()`` would segfault if called
2230 immediately after creating the object, without any intervening
2231 ``.decompress()`` calls.
Andrew M. Kuchling3b585b32004-12-28 20:10:48 +00002232
Skip Montanaro05885812005-01-16 20:48:27 +00002233- The reconvert.quote function can now emit triple-quoted strings. The
2234 reconvert module now has some simple documentation.
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002235
Walter Dörwaldaf3b39a2005-02-18 13:22:43 +00002236- ``UserString.MutableString`` now supports negative indices in
2237 ``__setitem__`` and ``__delitem__``
2238
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00002239- Bug #1149508: ``textwrap`` now handles hyphenated numbers (eg. "2004-03-05")
2240 correctly.
2241
Walter Dörwaldbc8e6422005-04-21 21:32:03 +00002242- Partial fixes for SF bugs #1163244 and #1175396: If a chunk read by
2243 ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` has a trailing "\r", read one more
2244 character even if the user has passed a size parameter to get a proper
2245 line ending. Remove the special handling of a "\r\n" that has been split
2246 between two lines.
2247
Walter Dörwalda47d1c02005-08-30 10:23:14 +00002248- Bug #1251300: On UCS-4 builds the "unicode-internal" codec will now complain
2249 about illegal code points. The codec now supports PEP 293 style error
2250 handlers.
2251
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00002252- Bug #1235646: ``codecs.StreamRecoder.next()`` now reencodes the data it reads
Walter Dörwaldc5238b82005-09-01 11:56:53 +00002253 from the input stream, so that the output is a byte string in the correct
2254 encoding instead of a unicode string.
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00002255
Gustavo Niemeyer6fa0c5a2005-09-14 08:54:39 +00002256- Bug #1202493: Fixing SRE parser to handle '{}' as perl does, rather than
2257 considering it exactly like a '*'.

2266
Walter Dörwald58917a62006-03-31 15:26:22 +00002267- Bug #947906: An object oriented interface has been added to the calendar
2268 module. It's possible to generate HTML calendar now and the module can be
Walter Dörwald48d5e502006-04-01 07:57:00 +00002269 called as a script (e.g. via ``python -mcalendar``). Localized month and
2270 weekday names can be ouput (even if an exotic encoding is used) using
2271 special classes that use unicode.
Walter Dörwald58917a62006-03-31 15:26:22 +00002272

Martin v. Löwis64c33dd2006-01-03 07:42:14 +00002287- The sources of zlib are now part of the Python distribution (zlib 1.2.3).
2288 The zlib module is now builtin on Windows.

2293 value of LINKCC if python was built with GCC 4.0.
2294
Trent Mick8321b422005-07-26 02:29:21 +00002295- Upgrade Windows build to zlib 1.2.3 which eliminates a potential security
2296 vulnerability in zlib 1.2.1 and 1.2.2.
2297
Brett Cannon08cd5982005-04-24 22:26:38 +00002298- EXTRA_CFLAGS has been introduced as an environment variable to hold compiler
2299 flags that change binary compatibility. Changes were also made to
2300 distutils.sysconfig to also use the environment variable when used during
Martin v. Löwisd7c795e2005-04-25 07:14:03 +00002301 compilation of the interpreter and of C extensions through distutils.
Brett Cannon08cd5982005-04-24 22:26:38 +00002302
Bob Ippolitoed233462005-03-29 13:47:59 +00002303- SF patch 1171735: Darwin 8's headers are anal about POSIX compliance,
2304 and linking has changed (prebinding is now deprecated, and libcc_dynamic
2305 no longer exists). This configure patch makes things right.
2306
Martin v. Löwise2713be2005-03-08 15:03:08 +00002307- Bug #1158607: Build with --disable-unicode again.
2308
Brett Cannon46d96232005-02-16 00:07:19 +00002309- spwdmodule.c is built only if either HAVE_GETSPNAM or HAVE_HAVE_GETSPENT is
2310 defined. Discovered as a result of not being able to build on OS X.
2311
Brett Cannon516592f2004-12-07 00:42:59 +00002312- setup.py now uses the directories specified in LDFLAGS using the -L option
2313 and in CPPFLAGS using the -I option for adding library and include
2314 directories, respectively, for compiling extension modules against. This has
2315 led to the core being compiled using the values in CPPFLAGS. It also removes
2316 the need for the special-casing of both DarwinPorts and Fink for darwin since
2317 the proper directories can be specified in LDFLAGS (``-L/sw/lib`` for Fink,
2318 ``-L/opt/local/lib`` for DarwinPorts) and CPPFLAGS (``-I/sw/include`` for
2319 Fink, ``-I/opt/local/include`` for DarwinPorts).
2320
Brett Cannon43802422005-02-10 20:48:03 +00002321- Test in configure.in that checks for tzset no longer dependent on tm->tm_zone
2322 to exist in the struct (not required by either ISO C nor the UNIX 2 spec).
2323 Tests for sanity in tzname when HAVE_TZNAME defined were also defined.
2324 Closes bug #1096244. Thanks Gregory Bond.

Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002326C API
2327-----
2328
Tim Petersc9d78aa2006-03-26 23:27:58 +00002329- ``PyMem_{Del, DEL}`` and ``PyMem_{Free, FREE}`` no longer map to
2330 ``PyObject_{Free, FREE}``. They map to the system ``free()`` now. If memory
2331 is obtained via the ``PyObject_`` family, it must be released via the
2332 ``PyObject_`` family, and likewise for the ``PyMem_`` family. This has
2333 always been officially true, but when Python's small-object allocator was
2334 introduced, an attempt was made to cater to a few extension modules
2335 discovered at the time that obtained memory via ``PyObject_New`` but
2336 released it via ``PyMem_DEL``. It's years later, and if such code still
2337 exists it will fail now (probably with segfaults, but calling wrong
2338 low-level memory management functions can yield many symptoms).
2339
Raymond Hettingerbeb31012005-08-16 03:47:52 +00002340- Added a C API for set and frozenset objects.
2341

2343
Walter Dörwaldd1c1e102005-10-06 20:29:57 +00002344- Patch #1313939: PyUnicode_DecodeCharmap() accepts a unicode string as the
2345 mapping argument now. This string is used as a mapping table. Byte values
2346 greater than the length of the string and 0xFFFE are treated as undefined
2347 mappings.
