Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000721- Unicode objects will no longer raise an exception when being
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000722 compared equal or unequal to a string and a UnicodeDecodeError
723 exception occurs, e.g. as result of a decoding failure.
Neal Norwitz56423e52006-08-13 18:11:08 +0000724
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000725 Instead, the equal (==) and unequal (!=) comparison operators will
726 now issue a UnicodeWarning and interpret the two objects as
727 unequal. The UnicodeWarning can be filtered as desired using
728 the warning framework, e.g. silenced completely, turned into an
729 exception, logged, etc.
730
731 Note that compare operators other than equal and unequal will still
732 raise UnicodeDecodeError exceptions as they've always done.

Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +0000903- Bug #1521947: When checking for overflow, ``PyOS_strtol()`` used some
904 operations on signed longs that are formally undefined by C.
905 Unfortunately, at least one compiler now cares about that, so complicated
906 the code to make that compiler happy again.
907

922
Andrew M. Kuchling93c928e2006-07-26 17:19:39 +0000923- Bug #1520864: unpacking singleton tuples in a 'for' loop (for x, in) works
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000924 again. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc magic number.
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000925 This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5b3 will be regenerated.

Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000927- Bug #1524317: Compiling Python ``--without-threads`` failed.
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000928 The Python core compiles again, and, in a build without threads, the
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000929 new ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dictionary with one entry,

939 for stream decoder, but final=True for the decode function.
940
Georg Brandl07fec3a2006-08-01 18:49:24 +0000941- os.urandom no longer masks unrelated exceptions like SystemExit or

946
Georg Brandle34ac7c2006-07-30 11:07:23 +0000947- Bug #1002398: The documentation for os.path.sameopenfile now correctly
948 refers to file descriptors, not file objects.
949
Tim Peterscbdd3502006-09-05 01:47:53 +0000950- The renaming of the xml package to xmlcore, and the import hackery done
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000951 to make it appear at both names, has been removed. Bug #1511497,

953
Georg Brandledd9b0d2006-07-29 09:33:26 +0000954- Bug #1441397: The compiler module now recognizes module and function
955 docstrings correctly as it did in Python 2.4.
956
Tim Peters6f681472006-07-27 23:44:37 +0000957- Bug #1529297: The rewrite of doctest for Python 2.4 unintentionally
958 lost that tests are sorted by name before being run. This rarely
959 matters for well-written tests, but can create baffling symptoms if
960 side effects from one test to the next affect outcomes. ``DocTestFinder``
961 has been changed to sort the list of tests it returns.
962
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000963- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0, and is now kept

982
Brett Cannoncaebe222006-07-18 04:41:36 +0000983- Bug #1520914: Change time.strftime() to accept a zero for any position in its
984 argument tuple. For arguments where zero is illegal, the value is forced to
985 the minimum value that is correct. This is to support an undocumented but
986 common way people used to fill in inconsequential information in the time
987 tuple pre-2.4.
988
Bob Ippolito5ea4bf12006-07-15 16:53:15 +0000989- Patch #1220874: Update the binhex module for Mach-O.
990
Barry Warsawb110bad2006-07-21 14:51:07 +0000991- The email package has improved RFC 2231 support, specifically for
992 recognizing the difference between encoded (name*0*=<blah>) and non-encoded
993 (name*0=<blah>) parameter continuations. This may change the types of
994 values returned from email.message.Message.get_param() and friends.
995 Specifically in some cases where non-encoded continuations were used,
996 get_param() used to return a 3-tuple of (None, None, string) whereas now it
997 will just return the string (since non-encoded continuations don't have
998 charset and language parts).
999
1000 Also, whereas % values were decoded in all parameter continuations, they are
1001 now only decoded in encoded parameter parts.
1002
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +00001003- Bug #1517990: IDLE keybindings on MacOS X now work correctly
1004
1005- Bug #1517996: IDLE now longer shows the default Tk menu when a
1006 path browser, class browser or debugger is the frontmost window on MacOS X
1007
Barry Warsaw00decd72006-07-27 23:43:15 +00001008- Patch #1520294: Support for getset and member descriptors in types.py,
1009 inspect.py, and pydoc.py. Specifically, this allows for querying the type
1010 of an object against these built-in types and more importantly, for getting
1011 their docstrings printed in the interactive interpreter's help() function.

1034 arrays, without the need to check the array size before.
1035
Thomas Heller6e1ad2e2006-07-13 17:05:13 +00001036- Bug #1521375: When the code in ctypes.util.find_library was

Thomas Heller2bdf29e2006-07-13 17:01:14 +00001038 /dev/null in certain cases; this is now fixed.
1039
Thomas Heller47d7a062006-07-12 08:43:47 +00001040- Bug #1467450: On Mac OS X 10.3, RTLD_GLOBAL is now used as the

Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +00001042
Thomas Hellerb4dc2ef2006-07-13 09:53:47 +00001043- Because of a misspelled preprocessor symbol, ctypes was always

1045
Gregory P. Smith641cddf2006-07-28 01:35:25 +00001046- pybsddb Bug #1527939: bsddb module DBEnv dbremove and dbrename
1047 methods now allow their database parameter to be None as the
1048 sleepycat API allows.
1049
Matt Flemingec926502006-07-28 11:27:27 +00001050- Bug #1526460: Fix socketmodule compile on NetBSD as it has a different

1054-----
1055
1056- Bug #1501330: Change test_ossaudiodev to be much more tolerant in terms of
1057 how long the test file should take to play. Now accepts taking 2.93 secs
1058 (exact time) +/- 10% instead of the hard-coded 3.1 sec.
1059
Georg Brandl4793aa32006-07-28 18:31:39 +00001060- Patch #1529686: The standard tests ``test_defaultdict``, ``test_iterlen``,
1061 ``test_uuid`` and ``test_email_codecs`` didn't actually run any tests when
1062 run via ``regrtest.py``. Now they do.

1072- PythonLauncher now works correctly when the path to the script contains
1073 characters that are treated specially by the shell (such as quotes).
1074
1075- Bug #1527397: PythonLauncher now launches scripts with the working directory
1076 set to the directory that contains the script instead of the user home
Tim Peters4643c2f2006-08-10 22:45:34 +00001077 directory. That latter was an implementation accident and not what users

1091
Neil Schemenauer0e07b602006-07-09 16:16:34 +00001092- Bug #1501934: The scope of global variables that are locally assigned
1093 using augmented assignment is now correctly determined.
1094
Martin v. Löwisd5cfa542006-07-03 13:47:40 +00001095- Bug #927248: Recursive method-wrapper objects can now safely

1099 and atof().
1100
Hye-Shik Change6a1cb92006-06-23 21:16:18 +00001101- Bug #1511381: codec_getstreamcodec() in codec.c is corrected to
1102 omit a default "error" argument for NULL pointer. This allows
1103 the parser to take a codec from cjkcodecs again.
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +00001104
Neal Norwitzfb48afa2006-07-08 05:31:37 +00001105- Bug #1519018: 'as' is now validated properly in import statements.
1106
Neal Norwitz28746ab2006-07-09 22:14:42 +00001107- On 64 bit systems, int literals that use less than 64 bits are
1108 now ints rather than longs.
1109
Neal Norwitzed657552006-07-10 00:04:44 +00001110- Bug #1512814, Fix incorrect lineno's when code at module scope
1111 started after line 256.
1112
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +00001113- New function ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dict mapping thread
1114 id to topmost thread stack frame. This is for expert use, and is
1115 especially useful for debugging application deadlocks. The functionality
1116 was previously available in Fazal Majid's ``threadframe`` extension
1117 module, but it wasn't possible to do this in a wholly threadsafe way from
1118 an extension.

1135
Thomas Woutersadd19112006-07-05 11:03:49 +00001136- string.Template() now correctly handles tuple-values. Previously,
1137 multi-value tuples would raise an exception and single-value tuples would
1138 be treated as the value they contain, instead.
1139
Martin v. Löwisede77f52006-07-03 13:01:35 +00001140- Bug #822974: Honor timeout in telnetlib.{expect,read_until}

1156 socket again, which then gets closed as it becomes unreferenced.
1157
Fred Drake10497c82006-06-29 02:57:48 +00001158- Bug #1504333: Make sgmllib support angle brackets in quoted
1159 attribute values.

1163
Georg Brandl1be63af2006-06-28 20:23:25 +00001164- Fix a bug in the turtle module's end_fill function.
1165
Brett Cannon53ab5b72006-06-22 16:49:14 +00001166- Bug #1510580: The 'warnings' module improperly required that a Warning
1167 category be either a types.ClassType and a subclass of Warning. The proper
1168 check is just that it is a subclass with Warning as the documentation states.
1169
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +00001170- The compiler module now correctly compiles the new try-except-finally

1176 shutdown when fileConfig() was called multiple times.
1177
Gerhard Häring762fbd32006-07-02 17:48:30 +00001178- The sqlite3 module did cut off data from the SQLite database at the first
1179 null character before sending it to a custom converter. This has been fixed
1180 now.

Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +00001185- #1494314: Fix a regression with high-numbered sockets in 2.4.3. This
1186 means that select() on sockets > FD_SETSIZE (typically 1024) work again.
1187 The patch makes sockets use poll() internally where available.

Thomas Hellerb9cb84f2006-07-10 11:17:37 +00001189- Assigning None to pointer type fields in ctypes structures possible
1190 overwrote the wrong fields, this is fixed now.
1191
1192- Fixed a segfault in _ctypes when ctypes.wintypes were imported
1193 on non-Windows platforms.
1194
1195- Bug #1518190: The ctypes.c_void_p constructor now accepts any
1196 integer or long, without range checking.
1197
1198- Patch #1517790: It is now possible to use custom objects in the ctypes
1199 foreign function argtypes sequence as long as they provide a from_param
1200 method, no longer is it required that the object is a ctypes type.
1201
1202- The '_ctypes' extension module now works when Python is configured
1203 with the --without-threads option.
1204
Martin v. Löwisee1e06d2006-07-02 18:44:00 +00001205- Bug #1513646: os.access on Windows now correctly determines write
1206 access, again.
1207
Neal Norwitz0f8b31a2006-06-28 06:28:31 +00001208- Bug #1512695: cPickle.loads could crash if it was interrupted with
1209 a KeyboardInterrupt.
1210
Neal Norwitza12aa882006-07-06 06:45:08 +00001211- Bug #1296433: parsing XML with a non-default encoding and
1212 a CharacterDataHandler could crash the interpreter in pyexpat.
1213
Neal Norwitz2a30cd02006-07-10 01:18:57 +00001214- Patch #1516912: improve Modules support for OpenVMS.

1220
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +00001221- 'configure' now detects the zlib library the same way as distutils.
Thomas Woutersfc34f6c2006-07-06 10:48:28 +00001222 Previously, the slight difference could cause compilation errors of the
1223 'zlib' module on systems with more than one version of zlib.
1224
Martin v. Löwis4cbd05c2006-07-06 07:05:21 +00001225- The MSI compileall step was fixed to also support a TARGETDIR

1256Core and builtins
1257-----------------
1258
Georg Brandla56b9152006-06-19 06:35:54 +00001259- Patch #1507676: Error messages returned by invalid abstract object operations
1260 (such as iterating over an integer) have been improved and now include the
1261 type of the offending object to help with debugging.
1262
Brett Cannonea3912b2006-06-13 21:46:41 +00001263- Bug #992017: A classic class that defined a __coerce__() method that returned
1264 its arguments swapped would infinitely recurse and segfault the interpreter.
1265
Neal Norwitz909eb122006-06-12 02:13:21 +00001266- Fix the socket tests so they can be run concurrently.
1267
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +00001268- Removed 5 integers from C frame objects (PyFrameObject).
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +00001269 f_nlocals, f_ncells, f_nfreevars, f_stack_size, f_restricted.
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +00001270
Brett Cannon22565aa2006-06-09 22:31:23 +00001271- Bug #532646: object.__call__() will continue looking for the __call__
1272 attribute on objects until one without one is found. This leads to recursion
1273 when you take a class and set its __call__ attribute to an instance of the
1274 class. Originally fixed for classic classes, but this fix is for new-style.
1275 Removes the infinite_rec_3 crasher.
1276
Georg Brandl24250812006-06-09 18:45:48 +00001277- The string and unicode methods startswith() and endswith() now accept
1278 a tuple of prefixes/suffixes to look for. Implements RFE #1491485.
1279
Brett Cannonde3b0522006-06-08 17:00:45 +00001280- Buffer objects, at the C level, never used the char buffer
1281 implementation even when the char buffer for the wrapped object was
1282 explicitly requested (originally returned the read or write buffer).
1283 Now a TypeError is raised if the char buffer is not present but is
1284 requested.
1285
Georg Brandlddbaa662006-06-04 21:56:52 +00001286- Patch #1346214: Statements like "if 0: suite" are now again optimized
1287 away like they were in Python 2.4.
1288
Georg Brandlb7c8f542006-05-27 12:30:25 +00001289- Builtin exceptions are now full-blown new-style classes instead of
1290 instances pretending to be classes, which speeds up exception handling
1291 by about 80% in comparison to 2.5a2.
1292
Martin v. Löwisd004fc82006-05-27 08:36:52 +00001293- Patch #1494554: Update unicodedata.numeric and unicode.isnumeric to
1294 Unicode 4.1.
1295
Georg Brandlf4ef1162006-05-26 18:03:31 +00001296- Patch #921466: sys.path_importer_cache is now used to cache valid and
1297 invalid file paths for the built-in import machinery which leads to
1298 fewer open calls on startup.
1299
Tim Peters696cf432006-05-24 21:10:40 +00001300- Patch #1442927: ``long(str, base)`` is now up to 6x faster for non-power-
1301 of-2 bases. The largest speedup is for inputs with about 1000 decimal
1302 digits. Conversion from non-power-of-2 bases remains quadratic-time in
1303 the number of input digits (it was and remains linear-time for bases
1304 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32).
1305
Tim Petersb713ec22006-05-23 18:45:30 +00001306- Bug #1334662: ``int(string, base)`` could deliver a wrong answer
1307 when ``base`` was not 2, 4, 8, 10, 16 or 32, and ``string`` represented
1308 an integer close to ``sys.maxint``. This was repaired by patch
1309 #1335972, which also gives a nice speedup.
1310
Richard Jonescebbefc2006-05-23 18:28:17 +00001311- Patch #1337051: reduced size of frame objects.
1312
1313- PyErr_NewException now accepts a tuple of base classes as its
1314 "base" parameter.
1315
Richard Jones7c88dcc2006-05-23 10:37:38 +00001316- Patch #876206: function call speedup by retaining allocated frame
1317 objects.
1318
Georg Brandl7b90e162006-05-18 07:01:27 +00001319- Bug #1462152: file() now checks more thoroughly for invalid mode
1320 strings and removes a possible "U" before passing the mode to the
1321 C library function.
1322
Neal Norwitz1004a532006-05-15 07:17:23 +00001323- Patch #1488312, Fix memory alignment problem on SPARC in unicode
1324
Neal Norwitz373f0a72006-05-15 07:04:36 +00001325- Bug #1487966: Fix SystemError with conditional expression in assignment
1326
Martin v. Löwis879768d2006-05-11 13:28:43 +00001327- WindowsError now has two error code attributes: errno, which carries
1328 the error values from errno.h, and winerror, which carries the error
1329 values from winerror.h. Previous versions put the winerror.h values
1330 (from GetLastError()) into the errno attribute.
1331
Martin v. Löwis77736712006-05-04 05:51:03 +00001332- Patch #1475845: Raise IndentationError for unexpected indent.
1333
Neal Norwitzc4edb0e2006-05-02 04:43:14 +00001334- Patch #1479181: split open() and file() from being aliases for each other.
1335
Tim Peters44bd9862006-06-01 13:49:23 +00001336- Patch #1497053 & bug #1275608: Exceptions occurring in ``__eq__()``
1337 methods were always silently ignored by dictionaries when comparing keys.
1338 They are now passed through (except when using the C API function
1339 ``PyDict_GetItem()``, whose semantics did not change).
1340
1341- Bug #1456209: In some obscure cases it was possible for a class with a
1342 custom ``__eq__()`` method to confuse dict internals when class instances
1343 were used as a dict's keys and the ``__eq__()`` method mutated the dict.
1344 No, you don't have any code that did this ;-)

1350
1351- Patch #1462338: Upgrade pyexpat to expat 2.0.0
1352
Brett Cannon6ee7d012006-06-08 16:23:04 +00001353- Change binascii.hexlify to accept a read-only buffer instead of only a char
1354 buffer and actually follow its documentation.
1355
Hye-Shik Chang58ce5bc2006-06-05 00:59:54 +00001356- Fixed a potentially invalid memory access of CJKCodecs' shift-jis decoder.
1357
Nick Coghlanc649ec52006-05-29 12:43:05 +00001358- Patch #1478788 (modified version): The functional extension module has
1359 been renamed to _functools and a functools Python wrapper module added.
1360 This provides a home for additional function related utilities that are
1361 not specifically about functional programming. See PEP 309.
1362
Bob Ippolito7ccc95a2006-05-23 19:11:34 +00001363- Patch #1493701: performance enhancements for struct module.

1368 copy() method.
1369
Andrew MacIntyre92913322006-06-13 15:04:24 +00001370- Patch #1454481: thread stack size is now tunable at runtime for thread

1372
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00001373- On Win32, os.listdir now supports arbitrarily-long Unicode path names
1374 (up to the system limit of 32K characters).
1375
1376- Use Win32 API to implement os.{access,chdir,chmod,mkdir,remove,rename,rmdir,utime}.
1377 As a result, these functions now raise WindowsError instead of OSError.
1378
Tim Peters7a822da2006-05-25 21:50:17 +00001379- ``time.clock()`` on Win64 should use the high-performance Windows
1380 ``QueryPerformanceCounter()`` now (as was already the case on 32-bit
1381 Windows platforms).
1382
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00001383- Calling Tk_Init twice is refused if the first call failed as that
1384 may deadlock.
1385
Gregory P. Smith0459e4d2006-06-05 02:02:25 +00001386- bsddb: added the DB_ARCH_REMOVE flag and fixed db.DBEnv.log_archive() to
1387 accept it without potentially using an uninitialized pointer.
1388
1389- bsddb: added support for the DBEnv.log_stat() and DBEnv.lsn_reset() methods
1390 assuming BerkeleyDB >= 4.0 and 4.4 respectively. [pybsddb project SF
1391 patch numbers 1494885 and 1494902]

1398
Gregory P. Smith3c228b12006-06-05 23:59:37 +00001399- bsddb: the __len__ method of a DB object has been fixed to return correct
1400 results. It could previously incorrectly return 0 in some cases.
1401 Fixes SF bug 1493322 (pybsddb bug 1184012).
1402
Gregory P. Smithff7d9912006-06-08 05:17:08 +00001403- bsddb: the bsddb.dbtables Modify method now raises the proper error and
1404 aborts the db transaction safely when a modifier callback fails.
1405 Fixes SF python patch/bug #1408584.
1406
Gregory P. Smith506f7b52006-06-15 08:52:32 +00001407- bsddb: multithreaded DB access using the simple bsddb module interface
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +00001408 now works reliably. It has been updated to use automatic BerkeleyDB

1434 mime.types file for determining MIME types.
1435
Georg Brandl2605ca82006-06-14 06:08:31 +00001436- Bug #1339007: Shelf objects now don't raise an exception in their
1437 __del__ method when initialization failed.
1438
Martin v. Löwisd8251432006-06-14 05:21:04 +00001439- Patch #1455898: The MBCS codec now supports the incremental mode for
1440 double-byte encodings.
1441
Tim Peters43898b42006-06-14 04:09:25 +00001442- ``difflib``'s ``SequenceMatcher.get_matching_blocks()`` was changed to
1443 guarantee that adjacent triples in the return list always describe
1444 non-adjacent blocks. Previously, a pair of matching blocks could end
1445 up being described by multiple adjacent triples that formed a partition
1446 of the matching pair.
1447
Greg Ward0e0c9f42006-06-11 16:24:11 +00001448- Bug #1498146: fix optparse to handle Unicode strings in option help,
1449 description, and epilog.

1454 clarify docs.
1455
Andrew M. Kuchling0873b112006-06-09 16:46:51 +00001456- The wsgiref package has been added to the standard library.
1457
Nick Coghlan676725d2006-06-08 13:54:49 +00001458- The functions update_wrapper() and wraps() have been added to the functools
1459 module. These make it easier to copy relevant metadata from the original
1460 function when writing wrapper functions.
1461
Tim Petersd6a9eef2006-06-05 01:48:21 +00001462- The optional ``isprivate`` argument to ``doctest.testmod()``, and the
1463 ``doctest.is_private()`` function, both deprecated in 2.4, were removed.
Tim Petersbf0400a2006-06-05 01:43:03 +00001464
Martin v. Löwis3f767792006-06-04 19:36:28 +00001465- Patch #1359618: Speed up charmap encoder by using a trie structure
1466 for lookup.
1467
Tim Petersd609b1a2006-06-02 23:22:51 +00001468- The functions in the ``pprint`` module now sort dictionaries by key
1469 before computing the display. Before 2.5, ``pprint`` sorted a dictionary
1470 if and only if its display required more than one line, although that
1471 wasn't documented. The new behavior increases predictability; e.g.,
1472 using ``pprint.pprint(a_dict)`` in a doctest is now reliable.
1473
Georg Brandlfd9a4b12006-05-29 20:57:01 +00001474- Patch #1497027: try HTTP digest auth before basic auth in urllib2

1550-----------------
1551
Thomas Heller1b046642006-04-18 18:51:06 +00001552- Bug #1465834: 'bdist_wininst preinstall script support' was fixed
1553 by converting these apis from macros into exported functions again:
1554
1555 PyParser_SimpleParseFile PyParser_SimpleParseString PyRun_AnyFile
1556 PyRun_AnyFileEx PyRun_AnyFileFlags PyRun_File PyRun_FileEx

1560
Martin v. Löwis45294a92006-04-18 06:24:08 +00001561- Under COUNT_ALLOCS, types are not necessarily immortal anymore.
1562
Martin v. Löwis19ab6c92006-04-16 18:55:50 +00001563- All uses of PyStructSequence_InitType have been changed to initialize
1564 the type objects only once, even if the interpreter is initialized
1565 multiple times.
1566
Neal Norwitz61546162006-04-14 05:20:28 +00001567- Bug #1454485, array.array('u') could crash the interpreter. This was
1568 due to PyArgs_ParseTuple(args, 'u#', ...) trying to convert buffers (strings)
1569 to unicode when it didn't make sense. 'u#' now requires a unicode string.
1570
1571- Py_UNICODE is unsigned. It was always documented as unsigned, but
1572 due to a bug had a signed value in previous versions.
1573
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001574- Patch #837242: ``id()`` of any Python object always gives a positive
1575 number now, which might be a long integer. ``PyLong_FromVoidPtr`` and
1576 ``PyLong_AsVoidPtr`` have been changed accordingly. Note that it has
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001577 never been correct to implement a ``__hash()__`` method that returns the
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001578 ``id()`` of an object:
Martin v. Löwis0bc2ab92006-04-10 20:28:17 +00001579
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001580 def __hash__(self):
1581 return id(self) # WRONG
1582
1583 because a hash result must be a (short) Python int but it was always
1584 possible for ``id()`` to return a Python long. However, because ``id()``
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001585 could return negative values before, on a 32-bit box an ``id()`` result
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001586 was always usable as a hash value before this patch. That's no longer
1587 necessarily so.
1588
1589- Python on OS X 10.3 and above now uses dlopen() (via dynload_shlib.c)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001590 to load extension modules and now provides the dl module. As a result,
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001591 sys.setdlopenflags() now works correctly on these systems. (SF patch
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001592 #1454844)
1593
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001594- Patch #1463867: enhanced garbage collection to allow cleanup of cycles
1595 involving generators that have paused outside of any ``try`` or ``with``
1596 blocks. (In 2.5a1, a paused generator that was part of a reference
1597 cycle could not be garbage collected, regardless of whether it was
1598 paused in a ``try`` or ``with`` block.)

1632 or exception is ignored).
1633
Nick Coghlanda2268f2006-04-24 04:37:15 +00001634- Fixed contextlib.nested to cope with exceptions being raised and

1639 gettext cannot be imported; added ``OptionParser.destroy()`` method;
1640 added ``epilog`` for better help generation).
1641
Tim Peters21fbd572006-04-21 21:18:10 +00001642- Bug #1473760: ``tempfile.TemporaryFile()`` could hang on Windows, when
1643 called from a thread spawned as a side effect of importing a module.
1644
Phillip J. Eby17a35f92006-04-18 16:45:14 +00001645- The pydoc module now supports documenting packages contained in
1646 .zip or .egg files.
1647
1648- The pkgutil module now has several new utility functions, such
1649 as ``walk_packages()`` to support working with packages that are either

1719 containers, on 64-bit architectures. Running these tests is only sensible
1720 on 64-bit machines with more than two gigabytes of memory. The argument
1721 passed is the maximum amount of memory for the tests to use.

1749
Nick Coghlan43832302006-04-23 17:04:07 +00001750- PEP 338: -m command line switch now delegates to runpy.run_module
1751 allowing it to support modules in packages and zipfiles
1752
Martin v. Löwisc661b882006-04-20 04:54:23 +00001753- On Windows, .DLL is not an accepted file name extension for
1754 extension modules anymore; extensions are only found if they
1755 end in .PYD.
1756
Martin v. Löwisea62d252006-04-03 10:56:49 +00001757- Bug #1421664: sys.stderr.encoding is now set to the same value as

1761
Georg Brandlccadf842006-03-31 18:54:53 +00001762- Patch #1460496: round() now accepts keyword arguments.
1763
Anthony Baxter262c00a2006-03-30 10:53:17 +00001764- Fixed bug #1459029 - unicode reprs were double-escaped.
1765
Hye-Shik Changd478f342006-03-23 12:32:36 +00001766- Patch #1396919: The system scope threads are reenabled on FreeBSD
1767 5.4 and later versions.
1768
Neal Norwitze98ccf62006-03-23 05:39:47 +00001769- Bug #1115379: Compiling a Unicode string with an encoding declaration
1770 now gives a SyntaxError.
1771
Georg Brandlabd1ff82006-03-18 07:59:59 +00001772- Previously, Python code had no easy way to access the contents of a
1773 cell object. Now, a ``cell_contents`` attribute has been added
1774 (closes patch #1170323).
1775
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001776- Patch #1123430: Python's small-object allocator now returns an arena to
1777 the system ``free()`` when all memory within an arena becomes unused
1778 again. Prior to Python 2.5, arenas (256KB chunks of memory) were never
1779 freed. Some applications will see a drop in virtual memory size now,
1780 especially long-running applications that, from time to time, temporarily
1781 use a large number of small objects. Note that when Python returns an
1782 arena to the platform C's ``free()``, there's no guarantee that the
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001783 platform C library will in turn return that memory to the operating system.
1784 The effect of the patch is to stop making that impossible, and in tests it
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001785 appears to be effective at least on Microsoft C and gcc-based systems.
1786 Thanks to Evan Jones for hard work and patience.

Georg Brandl533ff6f2006-03-08 18:09:27 +00001788- Patch #1434038: property() now uses the getter's docstring if there is
1789 no "doc" argument given. This makes it possible to legitimately use
1790 property() as a decorator to produce a read-only property.
1791
Guido van Rossum9aa37ab2006-03-07 18:54:08 +00001792- PEP 357, patch 1436368: add an __index__ method to int/long and a matching
1793 nb_index slot to the PyNumberMethods struct. The slot is consulted instead
1794 of requiring an int or long in slicing and a few other contexts, enabling
1795 other objects (e.g. Numeric Python's integers) to be used as slice indices.
1796
Neal Norwitz995acdf2006-03-07 05:01:00 +00001797- Fixed various bugs reported by Coverity's Prevent tool.
1798
Brett Cannonbf364092006-03-01 04:25:17 +00001799- PEP 352, patch #1104669: Make exceptions new-style objects. Introduced the
1800 new exception base class, BaseException, which has a new message attribute.
1801 KeyboardInterrupt and SystemExit to directly inherit from BaseException now.
1802 Raising a string exception now raises a DeprecationWarning.
1803
Thomas Woutersfb609f42006-02-28 16:37:25 +00001804- Patch #1438387, PEP 328: relative and absolute imports. Imports can now be
1805 explicitly relative, using 'from .module import name' to mean 'from the same
1806 package as this module is in. Imports without dots still default to the
1807 old relative-then-absolute, unless 'from __future__ import
1808 absolute_import' is used.
1809
Brett Cannona7446e32006-02-27 23:39:10 +00001810- Properly check if 'warnings' raises an exception (usually when a filter set
1811 to "error" is triggered) when raising a warning for raising string
1812 exceptions.
1813
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001814- CO_GENERATOR_ALLOWED is no longer defined. This behavior is the default.
Neal Norwitz0023a2f2006-02-27 23:24:48 +00001815 The name was removed from Include/code.h.
1816
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001817- PEP 308: conditional expressions were added: (x if cond else y).
Neal Norwitzeb651252006-02-27 16:47:12 +00001818
Guido van Rossum1968ad32006-02-25 22:38:04 +00001819- Patch 1433928:
1820 - The copy module now "copies" function objects (as atomic objects).
1821 - dict.__getitem__ now looks for a __missing__ hook before raising
1822 KeyError.
1823
Tim Peters84ef21c2006-02-28 20:39:06 +00001824- PEP 343: with statement implemented. Needs ``from __future__ import
1825 with_statement``. Use of 'with' as a variable will generate a warning.
1826 Use of 'as' as a variable will also generate a warning (unless it's
Neal Norwitz055ec242006-02-28 20:06:49 +00001827 part of an import statement).
Guido van Rossum1a5e21e2006-02-28 21:57:43 +00001828 The following objects have __context__ methods:
1829 - The built-in file type.
1830 - The thread.LockType type.
1831 - The following types defined by the threading module:
1832 Lock, RLock, Condition, Semaphore, BoundedSemaphore.
1833 - The decimal.Context class.
Guido van Rossumc2e20742006-02-27 22:32:47 +00001834
Marc-André Lemburgfe4b34c2006-02-19 15:22:22 +00001835- Fix the encodings package codec search function to only search
1836 inside its own package. Fixes problem reported in patch #1433198.
1837
1838 Note: Codec packages should implement and register their own
1839 codec search function. PEP 100 has the details.
1840
Tim Peters9ea89d22006-06-04 03:26:02 +00001841- PEP 353: Using ``Py_ssize_t`` as the index type.
1842
1843- ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` builds now add ``4*sizeof(size_t)`` bytes of debugging
1844 info to each allocated block, since the ``Py_ssize_t`` changes (PEP 353)
1845 now allow Python to make use of memory blocks exceeding 2**32 bytes for
1846 some purposes on 64-bit boxes. A ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` build was limited
1847 to 4-byte allocations before.
Martin v. Löwis18e16552006-02-15 17:27:45 +00001848
Neal Norwitzfc76d632006-01-10 06:03:13 +00001849- Patch #1400181, fix unicode string formatting to not use the locale.
1850 This is how string objects work. u'%f' could use , instead of .
1851 for the decimal point. Now both strings and unicode always use periods.
1852
Neal Norwitz671b9e32006-01-09 07:07:12 +00001853- Bug #1244610, #1392915, fix build problem on OpenBSD 3.7 and 3.8.
1854 configure would break checking curses.h.
1855
Georg Brandlcd4d1e82005-12-27 17:37:07 +00001856- Bug #959576: The pwd module is now builtin. This allows Python to be
1857 built on UNIX platforms without $HOME set.
1858
Neal Norwitzc10978f2005-12-19 06:07:16 +00001859- Bug #1072182, fix some potential problems if characters are signed.
1860
Neal Norwitz5d0ad502005-12-19 04:27:42 +00001861- Bug #889500, fix line number on SyntaxWarning for global declarations.
1862
Neal Norwitzdb83eb32005-12-18 05:29:30 +00001863- Bug #1378022, UTF-8 files with a leading BOM crashed the interpreter.
1864
Neal Norwitze7214a12005-12-18 05:03:17 +00001865- Support for converting hex strings to floats no longer works.
1866 This was not portable. float('0x3') now raises a ValueError.
1867
Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001868- Patch #1382163: Expose Subversion revision number to Python. New C API
Barry Warsawd3c38ff2006-03-07 09:46:03 +00001869 function Py_GetBuildNumber(). New attribute sys.subversion. Build number
Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001870 is now displayed in interactive prompt banner.
1871
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00001872- Implementation of PEP 341 - Unification of try/except and try/finally.
1873 "except" clauses can now be written together with a "finally" clause in
Neal Norwitz11ca77e2005-12-17 22:24:12 +00001874 one try statement instead of two nested ones. Patch #1355913.
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00001875
Hye-Shik Chang835b2432005-12-17 04:38:31 +00001876- Bug #1379994: Builtin unicode_escape and raw_unicode_escape codec

1880
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001881- Bug #1281408: Py_BuildValue now works correctly even with unsigned longs
Georg Brandlf06e30a2005-11-24 15:37:42 +00001882 and long longs.
1883
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001884- SF Bug #1350188, "setdlopenflags" leads to crash upon "import"
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001885 It was possible for dlerror() to return a NULL pointer, so
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001886 it will now use a default error message in this case.
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001887
Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00001888- Replaced most Unicode charmap codecs with new ones using the
1889 new Unicode translate string feature in the builtin charmap
1890 codec; the codecs were created from the mapping tables available
1891 at ftp.unicode.org and contain a few updates (e.g. the Mac OS
1892 encodings now include a mapping for the Apple logo)
1893
Tim Peterse3547fd2005-12-16 23:13:57 +00001894- Added a few more codecs for Mac OS encodings
Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00001895

1899 syntax tree is available for read-only (non-compile) access
Martin v. Löwis577b5b92006-02-27 15:23:19 +00001900 to Python code; an _ast module was added.
Neal Norwitzfed9b3e2005-10-21 06:32:02 +00001901
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001902- SF bug #1167751: fix incorrect code being produced for generator expressions.
Neal Norwitz16af7342005-10-21 06:25:33 +00001903 The following code now raises a SyntaxError: foo(a = i for i in range(10))

Neal Norwitz40d37812005-10-02 01:48:49 +00001910- Fix segfault with invalid coding.
1911
1912- SF bug #772896: unknown encoding results in MemoryError.
1913
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001914- All iterators now have a Boolean value of True. Formerly, some iterators
Raymond Hettinger6b27cda2005-09-24 21:23:05 +00001915 supported a __len__() method which evaluated to False when the iterator
1916 was empty.
1917
Guido van Rossum630db602005-09-20 18:49:54 +00001918- On 64-bit platforms, when __len__() returns a value that cannot be
1919 represented as a C int, raise OverflowError.
1920
Skip Montanarof8948ca2005-09-19 03:54:46 +00001921- test__locale is skipped on OS X < 10.4 (only partial locale support is
Walter Dörwald6611a8b2005-10-09 19:28:35 +00001922 present).
Skip Montanarof8948ca2005-09-19 03:54:46 +00001923
Georg Brandl80bbf3f2005-09-14 19:38:29 +00001924- SF bug #893549: parsing keyword arguments was broken with a few format
1925 codes.
1926
Guido van Rossum8ee3e5a2005-09-14 18:09:42 +00001927- Changes donated by Elemental Security to make it work on AIX 5.3
1928 with IBM's 64-bit compiler (SF patch #1284289). This also closes SF
1929 bug #105470: test_pwd fails on 64bit system (Opteron).
1930
Guido van Rossum539c6622005-09-14 17:49:54 +00001931- Changes donated by Elemental Security to make it work on HP-UX 11 on
1932 Itanium2 with HP's 64-bit compiler (SF patch #1225212).
1933
Georg Brandl4550b8d2005-08-26 06:43:52 +00001934- Disallow keyword arguments for type constructors that don't use them
Georg Brandl02c42872005-08-26 06:42:30 +00001935 (fixes bug #1119418).
1936
Martin v. Löwisd35edda2005-08-24 08:39:24 +00001937- Forward UnicodeDecodeError into SyntaxError for source encoding errors.
1938
Barry Warsawe2eca0b2005-08-15 18:14:19 +00001939- SF bug #900092: When tracing (e.g. for hotshot), restore 'return' events for
1940 exceptions that cause a function to exit.
1941
Raymond Hettinger9f1a6792005-07-31 01:16:36 +00001942- The implementation of set() and frozenset() was revised to use its
1943 own internal data structure. Memory consumption is reduced by 1/3
1944 and there are modest speed-ups as well. The API is unchanged.
1945
Tim Petersde7990b2005-07-17 23:45:23 +00001946- SF bug #1238681: freed pointer is used in longobject.c:long_pow().
1947
Michael W. Hudson0edc7a02005-07-12 10:21:19 +00001948- SF bug #1229429: PyObject_CallMethod failed to decrement some
1949 reference counts in some error exit cases.
1950
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001951- SF bug #1185883: Python's small-object memory allocator took over
1952 a block managed by the platform C library whenever a realloc specified
1953 a small new size. However, there's no portable way to know then how
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001954 much of the address space following the pointer is valid, so there's no
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001955 portable way to copy data from the C-managed block into Python's
1956 small-object space without risking a memory fault. Python's small-object
1957 realloc now leaves such blocks under the control of the platform C
1958 realloc.
1959
Michael W. Hudsonb8963812005-07-05 15:21:58 +00001960- SF bug #1232517: An overflow error was not detected properly when
1961 attempting to convert a large float to an int in os.utime().
1962
Raymond Hettinger3296e692005-06-29 23:29:56 +00001963- SF bug #1224347: hex longs now print with lowercase letters just
1964 like their int counterparts.
1965
Michael W. Hudson188d4362005-06-20 16:52:57 +00001966- SF bug #1163563: the original fix for bug #1010677 ("thread Module
1967 Breaks PyGILState_Ensure()") broke badly in the case of multiple
1968 interpreter states; back out that fix and do a better job (see
1969 http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-dev/2005-June/054258.html
1970 for a longer write-up of the problem).
1971
Michael W. Hudsondf888462005-06-03 14:41:55 +00001972- SF patch #1180995: marshal now uses a binary format by default when
1973 serializing floats.
1974
Michael W. Hudsonda85a902005-06-01 11:34:22 +00001975- SF patch #1181301: on platforms that appear to use IEEE 754 floats,
1976 the routines that promise to produce IEEE 754 binary representations
1977 of floats now simply copy bytes around.
1978
Skip Montanarobbf12ba2005-05-20 03:07:06 +00001979- bug #967182: disallow opening files with 'wU' or 'aU' as specified by PEP
1980 278.
1981
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001982- patch #1109424: int, long, float, complex, and unicode now check for the
1983 proper magic slot for type conversions when subclassed. Previously the
1984 magic slot was ignored during conversion. Semantics now match the way
1985 subclasses of str always behaved. int/long/float, conversion of an instance
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00001986 to the base class has been moved to the proper nb_* magic slot and out of
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001987 PyNumber_*().
Neal Norwitzcfba5f82006-04-25 05:05:03 +00001988 Thanks Walter Drwald.
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001989
Barry Warsawc8d907c2005-04-19 23:43:40 +00001990- Descriptors defined in C with a PyGetSetDef structure, where the setter is
1991 NULL, now raise an AttributeError when attempting to set or delete the
1992 attribute. Previously a TypeError was raised, but this was inconsistent
1993 with the equivalent pure-Python implementation.
1994
Michael W. Hudson774479c2005-04-18 08:46:17 +00001995- It is now safe to call PyGILState_Release() before
1996 PyEval_InitThreads() (note that if there is reason to believe there
1997 are multiple threads around you still must call PyEval_InitThreads()
1998 before using the Python API; this fix is for extension modules that
1999 have no way of knowing if Python is multi-threaded yet).
2000
Michael W. Hudsone3afc592005-04-07 10:11:19 +00002001- Typing Ctrl-C whilst raw_input() was waiting in a build with threads
2002 disabled caused a crash.
2003
Michael W. Hudsonb330adf2005-03-31 09:35:44 +00002004- Bug #1165306: instancemethod_new allowed the creation of a method
2005 with im_class == im_self == NULL, which caused a crash when called.
2006
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002007- Move exception finalisation later in the shutdown process - this
Anthony Baxter12b6f6c2005-03-29 13:36:16 +00002008 fixes the crash seen in bug #1165761
2009
Raymond Hettinger96229b12005-03-11 06:49:40 +00002010- Added two new builtins, any() and all().
2011
Brett Cannon409d8f22005-03-05 06:47:57 +00002012- Defining a class with empty parentheses is now allowed
Brett Cannonf4189912005-04-09 02:30:16 +00002013 (e.g., ``class C(): pass`` is no longer a syntax error).
2014 Patch #1176012 added support to the 'parser' module and 'compiler' package
2015 (thanks to logistix for that added support).
Brett Cannon409d8f22005-03-05 06:47:57 +00002016
Martin v. Löwis96d743e2005-03-03 23:00:26 +00002017- Patch #1115086: Support PY_LONGLONG in structmember.
2018
Raymond Hettingerb67cc802005-03-03 16:45:19 +00002019- Bug #1155938: new style classes did not check that __init__() was

2024
Martin v. Löwisff232d72005-03-03 09:24:38 +00002025- Bug #723201: Raise a TypeError for passing bad objects to 'L' format.
2026
Michael W. Hudson8e1afab2005-02-17 14:55:21 +00002027- Bug #1124295: the __name__ attribute of file objects was
2028 inadvertently made inaccessible in restricted mode.
2029
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002030- Bug #1074011: closing sys.std{out,err} now causes a flush() and
Martin v. Löwis8e3ca8a2005-01-23 09:41:49 +00002031 an ferror() call.
2032
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00002033- min() and max() now support key= arguments with the same meaning as in
2034 list.sort().
2035
Raymond Hettingerc34f8672005-01-02 06:17:33 +00002036- The peephole optimizer now performs simple constant folding in expressions:
2037 (2+3) --> (5).
2038
Raymond Hettingera422c342005-01-11 03:03:27 +00002039- set and frozenset objects can now be marshalled. SF #1098985.
2040
Michael W. Hudsonfaa76482005-01-31 17:09:25 +00002041- Bug #1077106: Poor argument checking could cause memory corruption
2042 in calls to os.read().
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002043
Jeremy Hyltonab630502005-02-04 18:44:06 +00002044- The parser did not complain about future statements in illegal

2055 can't help, but can hurt if another thread happens to get created with
2056 the same thread id).

Georg Brandl828fdef2006-04-01 08:59:03 +00002267 a DB-API interface in the standard library. You'll need sqlite 3.0.8 or
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002268 later to build this - if you have an earlier version, the C extension
Anthony Baxterc51ee692006-04-01 00:57:31 +00002269 module will not be built.

2294
Barry Warsaw4d90bbd2006-03-22 02:45:50 +00002295- email 4.0 package now integrated. This is largely the same as the email 3.0
2296 package that was included in Python 2.3, except that PEP 8 module names are
2297 now used (e.g. mail.message instead of email.Message). The MIME classes
2298 have been moved to a subpackage (e.g. email.mime.text instead of
2299 email.MIMEText). The old names are still supported for now. Several
2300 deprecated Message methods have been removed and lots of bugs have been
2301 fixed. More details can be found in the email package documentation.

2307 as C functions PyCodec_IncrementalEncoder() and PyCodec_IncrementalDecoder()
2308 have been added.

2573
Martin v. Löwis22b457e2005-01-16 08:40:58 +00002574- os.{SEEK_SET, SEEK_CUR, SEEK_END} have been added for convenience.
2575
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002576- Enhancements to the csv module:
2577
2578 + Dialects are now validated by the underlying C code, better
Georg Brandl7eb4b7d2005-07-22 21:49:32 +00002579 reflecting its capabilities, and improving its compliance with
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002580 PEP 305.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002581 + Dialect parameter parsing has been re-implemented to improve error
2582 reporting.
2583 + quotechar=None and quoting=QUOTE_NONE now work the way PEP 305
2584 dictates.
2585 + the parser now removes the escapechar prefix from escaped characters.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002586 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the writer now tests for numeric
Andrew M. Kuchling6db67822006-04-18 14:04:57 +00002587 types, rather than any object that can be represented as a numeric.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002588 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the reader now casts unquoted fields
2589 to floats.
Andrew McNamaraf69d94f2005-01-13 11:30:54 +00002590 + reader now allows \r characters to be quoted (previously it only allowed
2591 \n to be quoted).
Andrew McNamarac89f2842005-01-12 07:44:42 +00002592 + writer doublequote handling improved.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002593 + Dialect classes passed to the module are no longer instantiated by
2594 the module before being parsed (the former validation scheme required
2595 this, but the mechanism was unreliable).
2596 + The dialect registry now contains instances of the internal
2597 C-coded dialect type, rather than references to python objects.
2598 + the internal c-coded dialect type is now immutable.
2599 + register_dialect now accepts the same keyword dialect specifications
2600 as the reader and writer, allowing the user to register dialects
2601 without first creating a dialect class.
2602 + a configurable limit to the size of parsed fields has been added -
2603 previously, an unmatched quote character could result in the entire
2604 file being read into the field buffer before an error was reported.
Andrew McNamara31d88962005-01-12 03:45:10 +00002605 + A new module method csv.field_size_limit() has been added that sets
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002606 the parser field size limit (returning the former limit). The initial
2607 limit is 128kB.
Andrew McNamara7f2053e2005-01-12 11:17:16 +00002608 + A line_num attribute has been added to the reader object, which tracks
2609 the number of lines read from the source iterator. This is not
2610 the same as the number of records returned, as records can span
2611 multiple lines.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002612 + reader and writer objects were not being registered with the cyclic-GC.
2613 This has been fixed.
2614
Brett Cannone6539c42005-01-08 02:43:53 +00002615- _DummyThread objects in the threading module now delete self.__block that is
2616 inherited from _Thread since it uses up a lock allocated by 'thread'. The
2617 lock primitives tend to be limited in number and thus should not be wasted on
2618 a _DummyThread object. Fixes bug #1089632.
2619
Raymond Hettinger97db05d2005-01-07 08:15:41 +00002620- The imghdr module now detects Exif files.
2621

2623 (Bug #951915).
2624
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002625- locale.py now uses an updated locale alias table (built using
2626 Tools/i18n/makelocalealias.py, a tool to parse the X11 locale
2627 alias file); the encoding lookup was enhanced to use Python's
Andrew M. Kuchling88b85822005-08-23 00:57:07 +00002628 encoding alias table.

2644
Raymond Hettinger664347b2004-12-04 21:21:53 +00002645- unittest.TestCase.run() and unittest.TestSuite.run() can now be successfully
2646 extended or overridden by subclasses. Formerly, the subclassed method would
2647 be ignored by the rest of the module. (Bug #1078905).
2648
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002649- heapq.nsmallest() and heapq.nlargest() now support key= arguments with
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00002650 the same meaning as in list.sort().
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002651
Walter Dörwald36733692004-12-22 12:50:50 +00002652- Bug #1076985: ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` now calls ``read()`` only

2654 tokenizer with very long source lines.
2655
Barry Warsaw538561e2006-01-01 21:48:54 +00002656- Bug #1083110: ``zlib.decompress.flush()`` would segfault if called

2665
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00002666- Bug #1149508: ``textwrap`` now handles hyphenated numbers (eg. "2004-03-05")
2667 correctly.
2668
Walter Dörwaldbc8e6422005-04-21 21:32:03 +00002669- Partial fixes for SF bugs #1163244 and #1175396: If a chunk read by
2670 ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` has a trailing "\r", read one more
2671 character even if the user has passed a size parameter to get a proper
2672 line ending. Remove the special handling of a "\r\n" that has been split
2673 between two lines.
2674
Walter Dörwalda47d1c02005-08-30 10:23:14 +00002675- Bug #1251300: On UCS-4 builds the "unicode-internal" codec will now complain
2676 about illegal code points. The codec now supports PEP 293 style error
2677 handlers.
2678
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00002679- Bug #1235646: ``codecs.StreamRecoder.next()`` now reencodes the data it reads
Walter Dörwaldc5238b82005-09-01 11:56:53 +00002680 from the input stream, so that the output is a byte string in the correct
2681 encoding instead of a unicode string.

2693
Walter Dörwald58917a62006-03-31 15:26:22 +00002694- Bug #947906: An object oriented interface has been added to the calendar
2695 module. It's possible to generate HTML calendar now and the module can be
Walter Dörwald48d5e502006-04-01 07:57:00 +00002696 called as a script (e.g. via ``python -mcalendar``). Localized month and
2697 weekday names can be ouput (even if an exotic encoding is used) using
2698 special classes that use unicode.

2738
Brett Cannon516592f2004-12-07 00:42:59 +00002739- setup.py now uses the directories specified in LDFLAGS using the -L option
2740 and in CPPFLAGS using the -I option for adding library and include
2741 directories, respectively, for compiling extension modules against. This has
2742 led to the core being compiled using the values in CPPFLAGS. It also removes
2743 the need for the special-casing of both DarwinPorts and Fink for darwin since
2744 the proper directories can be specified in LDFLAGS (``-L/sw/lib`` for Fink,
2745 ``-L/opt/local/lib`` for DarwinPorts) and CPPFLAGS (``-I/sw/include`` for
2746 Fink, ``-I/opt/local/include`` for DarwinPorts).
2747
Brett Cannon43802422005-02-10 20:48:03 +00002748- Test in configure.in that checks for tzset no longer dependent on tm->tm_zone
2749 to exist in the struct (not required by either ISO C nor the UNIX 2 spec).
2750 Tests for sanity in tzname when HAVE_TZNAME defined were also defined.

2754-----
2755
Tim Petersc9d78aa2006-03-26 23:27:58 +00002756- ``PyMem_{Del, DEL}`` and ``PyMem_{Free, FREE}`` no longer map to
2757 ``PyObject_{Free, FREE}``. They map to the system ``free()`` now. If memory
2758 is obtained via the ``PyObject_`` family, it must be released via the
2759 ``PyObject_`` family, and likewise for the ``PyMem_`` family. This has
2760 always been officially true, but when Python's small-object allocator was
2761 introduced, an attempt was made to cater to a few extension modules
2762 discovered at the time that obtained memory via ``PyObject_New`` but
2763 released it via ``PyMem_DEL``. It's years later, and if such code still
2764 exists it will fail now (probably with segfaults, but calling wrong
2765 low-level memory management functions can yield many symptoms).
2766
Raymond Hettingerbeb31012005-08-16 03:47:52 +00002767- Added a C API for set and frozenset objects.
