24 an existing .py counterpart, override the co_filename attributes of all
25 code objects if the original filename is obsolete (which can happen if the
26 file has been renamed, moved, or if it is accessed through different paths).

38 where the tp_hash and tp_dict slots are both NULL.
39
Benjamin Peterson7af65562008-12-29 17:56:58 +000040- Issue #4764: With io.open, IOError.filename is set when trying to open a

51
Antoine Pitrou73c0e652008-12-17 22:46:54 +000052- Issue #2467: gc.DEBUG_STATS reported invalid elapsed times. Also, always

113 is temporarily replaced with an equivalent frozenset. But the eventual
114 KeyError would always report the empty frozenset([]) as the missing key. Now
115 it correctly refers to the initial element.

433 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
434 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
435 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent

603Core and Builtins
604-----------------
605
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000606- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
607 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
608 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
609 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
610 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
611 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
612 default.
613
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000614- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
615 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
616
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000617- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
618 value again.

Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000620- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,

626
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000627- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
628 ValueError consistently across platforms.
629
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000630- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
631 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
632 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.

638
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000639- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on

641
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000642- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when

644 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
645
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000646- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
647 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
648 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
649 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
650 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
651 failed have been fixed.

660
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000661- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
662 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
663 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
664
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000665- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
666 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
667 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
668 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
669 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,

Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000797Core and Builtins
798-----------------
799
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000800- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
801 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
802 an integer using operator.index().
803
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000804- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
805 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
806
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000807- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
808 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
809
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000810- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
811 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
812 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
813
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000814- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
815 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
816 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
817 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
818 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
819 level.
820
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000821- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
822 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
823 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
824 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
825 all imports from that module to fail.
826
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000827- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
828 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
829 new-style classes.
830
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000831- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
832 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
833 another file in sys.stdout.
834
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000835- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
836 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
837 another thread's dictionary.
838
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000839- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
840 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
841 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
842 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
843 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
844 10, -1).
845
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000846- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
847 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
848 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000849
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000850- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
851 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
852 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().

859 error when they failed.
860
Martin v. Löwisaabf4042008-08-02 07:20:25 +0000861- Issue #799428: Fix Tkinter.Misc._nametowidget to unwrap Tcl command objects.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000886- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
887 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000888 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000889 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
890 merged into trunk.
891
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +0000892- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().

Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000903 when completed.
Facundo Batista66c52772008-07-02 16:52:55 +0000904
Nick Coghlanc060b0e2008-07-02 13:09:19 +0000905- Issue #3190: Pydoc now hides the automatic module attribute __package__ (the

907
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000908- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001360- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
1361 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
1362 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
1363 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
1364 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
1365 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
1366 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
1367 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001430- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1431 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1432 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1433 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1434 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1435 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1436 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1437 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1438 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1439 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1440 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1441 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1442 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1443 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1444 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1445 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1446 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1447 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1448 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1449 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1450
1451 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1452 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1453 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1454 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1455 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1456 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1457 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1458 access to the underlying socket used.
1459
1460 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1461 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1462 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001463
1464 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:

1737-----------------
1738
Fred Drakea8ee94b2008-03-01 02:45:07 +00001739- Issue #2051: pyc and pyo files are no longer created with permission
Barry Warsaw52973612008-03-01 02:23:38 +00001740 644. The mode is now inherited from the py file.
Christian Heimes40346852008-02-23 17:52:07 +00001741
Georg Brandlad61bc82008-02-23 15:11:18 +00001742- Issue #2067: file.__exit__() now calls subclasses' close() method.
1743
1744- Patch #1759: Backport of PEP 3129 class decorators.
Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +00001745
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001746- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +00001747 issue 215555 for a discussion.
1748
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001749- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1750 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1751 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1752 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1753 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1754 module is:
1755 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1756
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001757- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1758 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1759 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1760 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1761 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1762 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1763
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001764- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1765 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1766 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1767 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1768 PyObject_Format().
1769
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001770- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1771 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1772 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +00001773
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001774- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001775 prevent a possible crash: an Abstract Base Class would try to access
1776 a slot on a registered virtual subclass.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc60d6c7f2008-02-15 21:22:45 +00001777
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001778- Fixed repr() and str() of complex numbers with infinity or nan as

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001781- Clear all free lists during a gc.collect() of the highest generation
1782 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1783 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001784
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001785- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
1786 subclass of collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set
1787 to a bound method.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcb01aa432008-02-08 00:56:02 +00001788
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +00001789- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
1790 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
1791
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001792- Limit free list of method and builtin function objects to 256
1793 entries each.

1800 calls. Python expected the return type int but the fork familie
1801 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +00001802

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001815- Patch #1473257: generator objects gain a gi_code attribute. This is
1816 the same object as the func_code attribute of the function that
1817 produced the generator.
Georg Brandl0cdf9a32008-01-26 14:14:20 +00001818

1820 compiler, even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is
1821 supposed to be run when the condition is false. Now the compiler
1822 correctly emits bytecode for the "else" suite.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +00001823
