39 code has been kept as backup). This will allow for using the 'warning's
40 machinery in such places as the parser where use of pure Python code is not
41 possible.
42
Barry Warsawba437742008-04-04 01:34:41 +000043Library

47 reference to themselves.
48
Gregory P. Smithd59fefb2008-04-22 08:11:33 +000049- The getpass module has been improved on Unix. It now uses /dev/tty
50 by default and uses stderr instead of stdout. A GetPassWarning is

71 threads at once without fear of crashing the Python interpreter. If
72 file.close() is called while an object is in use by another thread
73 an IOError exception will be raised and the file will not be closed.
74
Thomas Hellerf7906482008-04-04 19:43:25 +000075- The bundled libffi copy is now in sync with the recently released
76 libffi3.0.5 version, apart from some small changes to
77 Modules/_ctypes/libffi/configure.ac.
78
Fred Drake46c58c12008-04-04 05:41:30 +000079- Issue #2385: distutils.core.run_script() makes __file__ available, so the
80 controlled environment will more closely mirror the typical script
81 environment. This supports setup.py scripts that refer to data files.
82
Barry Warsawba437742008-04-04 01:34:41 +000083Tests
84-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +000085- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining ports
86 to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an effort to
87 facilitate running multiple instances of the entire regression test suite
88 in parallel without issue. test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such
89 that it will always return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case
90 with the previous implementation, especially if socket options had been
91 set that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
92 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception if it
93 is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the SO_REUSEADDR or
94 SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if available, bind_port()
95 will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on the socket it's been passed.
96 This currently only applies to Windows. This option prevents any other
97 sockets from binding to the host/port we've bound to, thus removing the
98 possibility of the 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it,
99 that occurs when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a
100 host/port that's already been bound by another socket. The optional
101 preferred port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
102 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
103
104 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will pass
105 a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an unused port.
106 The temporary socket object is then closed and deleted, and the port is
107 returned. This method should only be used for obtaining an unused port
108 in order to pass to an external program (i.e. the -accept [port] argument
109 to openssl's s_server mode) or as a parameter to a server-oriented class
110 that doesn't give you direct access to the underlying socket used.
111
112 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used for
113 the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and connect).
114
115 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
116 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
117 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
118 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
119
120 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test suite to
121 run in parallel without issue.

125
Thomas Hellerdc96a772008-04-04 10:07:55 +0000126- Issue #2544: On HP-UX systems, use 'gcc -shared' for linking when
127 gcc is used as compiler.
128
Barry Warsawba437742008-04-04 01:34:41 +0000129C API
130-----
131
Christian Heimes6f341092008-04-18 23:13:07 +0000132- Added implementation of copysign, acosh, asinh, atanh and log1p
133 to the new files Include/pymath.h and Python/pymath.h for
134 platforms which provide the functions through their libm. The
135 files also contains several helpers and constants for math.

365-----------------
366
Fred Drakea8ee94b2008-03-01 02:45:07 +0000367- Issue #2051: pyc and pyo files are no longer created with permission
Barry Warsaw52973612008-03-01 02:23:38 +0000368 644. The mode is now inherited from the py file.
Christian Heimes40346852008-02-23 17:52:07 +0000369
Georg Brandlad61bc82008-02-23 15:11:18 +0000370- Issue #2067: file.__exit__() now calls subclasses' close() method.
371
372- Patch #1759: Backport of PEP 3129 class decorators.
Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +0000373
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000374- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +0000375 issue 215555 for a discussion.
376
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +0000377- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
378 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
379 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
380 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
381 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
382 module is:
383 from future_builtins import hex, oct
384
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +0000385- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
386 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
387 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
388 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
389 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
390 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
391
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +0000392- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
393 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
394 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
395 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
396 PyObject_Format().
397
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +0000398- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted __del__
399 methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent state.
400
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000401- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc60d6c7f2008-02-15 21:22:45 +0000403 on a registered virtual subclass.
404
Christian Heimes2f0da532008-02-15 06:57:08 +0000405- Fixed repr() and str() of complex numbers with infinity or nan as real or
406 imaginary part.
407
Andrew M. Kuchlingc6511a82008-03-04 01:48:26 +0000408- Clear all free lists during a gc.collect() of the highest generation in order
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +0000409 to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back memory to the
410 OS earlier.
411

414
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +0000415- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
416 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
417
Christian Heimes6075a822008-02-06 12:44:34 +0000418- Limit free list of method and builtin function objects to 256 entries
419 each.

439
Georg Brandl0cdf9a32008-01-26 14:14:20 +0000440- Patch #1473257: generator objects gain a gi_code attribute. This is the
441 same object as the func_code attribute of the function that produced the
442 generator.
443
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +0000444- Issue #1920: "while 0" statements were completely removed by the compiler,
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000445 even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is supposed to be run when
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +0000446 the condition is false. Now the compiler correctly emits bytecode for the
447 "else" suite.

570 PyObject_Call() never calling back out to Python code to trigger recursion
571 depth updates/checks. Required the creation of a static RuntimeError
572 instance in case normalizing an exception put the recursion check value past
573 its limit. Fixes crashers infinite_rec_(1|2|4|5).py.

604 inherited from a builtin base.
605
Vinay Sajip8549ce32007-05-06 17:53:37 +0000606- When __slots__ are set to a unicode string, make it work the same as

Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +0000620- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
621 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when

Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +0000625 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
