345-----------------
346
Martin v. Löwis9fa5a282008-09-11 06:53:30 +0000347- Issue #3642: Suppress warning in obmalloc when size_t is larger than uint.
348
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +0000349- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
350 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
351 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
352 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
353 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
354 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
355 64bit values.
356
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +0000357- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on
358 error.
359
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd3ffb892008-09-09 07:24:30 +0000360- Issue #3777: long() applied to a float object now always return a long
361 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
362 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
363 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
364
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +0000365- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
366 a unicode argument.
367
Benjamin Peterson17f03ca2008-09-01 14:18:30 +0000368- Issue #3683: Fix compilation when --without-threads is given.
369
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +0000370- Issue #3668: Fix a memory leak with the "s*" argument parser in
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000371 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +0000372 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
373
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000374- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +0000375 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
376 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
377 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
378 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
379 type object.
380
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +0000381- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.
382
383- Fix memory leaks found with valgrind and update suppressions file.
384
385- Fix compiler warnings in opt mode which would lead to invalid memory reads.
386
387- Fix problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker.
388
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +0000389- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
390 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
391
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +0000392- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
393 ``__delslice__``.
394
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +0000395- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared

520Core and Builtins
521-----------------
522
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000523- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
524 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
525 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
526 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
527 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
528 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
529 default.
530
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000531- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
532 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
533
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000534- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
535 value again.
536
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000537- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
538 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
539 and introducing s*.
540
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000541- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
542 object was stored in the freelist.
543
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000544- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
545 ValueError consistently across platforms.
546
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000547- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
548 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
549 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
550
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000551- Apply security patches from Apple.
552
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000553- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
554 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
555
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000556- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
557 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
558
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000559- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
560 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
561 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
562
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000563- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
564 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
565 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
566 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
567 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
568 failed have been fixed.

571-------
572
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000573- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
574
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000575- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
576 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
577
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000578- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
579 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
580 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
581
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000582- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
583 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
584 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
585 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
586 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
587 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
588
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000589- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
590 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
591
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000592- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
593
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000594- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
595
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000596- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
597
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000598- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
599 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
600
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000601- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
602 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
603
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000604- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
605 in a redirect.
606
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000607- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in

Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000609
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +0000610- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
611 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
612
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000613- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
614 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
615 regular expression.
616
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000617- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now

Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000717- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all

720
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000721- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which

723
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000724- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output

726
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000727- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
728 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
729 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
730
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000731- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
732 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
733 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
734 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
735 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
736 level.
737
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000738- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
739 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
740 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
741 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
742 all imports from that module to fail.
743
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000744- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
745 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
746 new-style classes.
747
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000748- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is

751
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000752- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from

754 another thread's dictionary.
755
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000756- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
757 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
758 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
759 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
760 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
761 10, -1).
762
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000763- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
764 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000803- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
804 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000805 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000806 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never

1212
Ronald Oussoren5640ce22008-06-05 12:58:24 +00001213- On MacOS X it is now possible to install the framework in 64-bit
1214 mode or even as a 4-way universal binary (that is, PPC, i386,
Georg Brandl5cc774e2008-06-11 20:28:06 +00001215 PPC64 and x86_64 support in one binary).
Ronald Oussoren5640ce22008-06-05 12:58:24 +00001216
1217 This is controlled by the configure argument ``--with-universal-archs``:
1218
1219 - ``--with-universal-archs=all``: install 4-way universal
1220
1221 - ``--with-universal-archs=32-bit``: install 2-way universal, 32-bit (the default)
1222
1223 - ``--with-universal-archs=64-bit``: install 2-way universal, 64-bit
1224
1225 This option should be used in combination with ``--enable-universalsdk=``.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001277- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
1278 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
1279 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
1280 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
1281 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
1282 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
1283 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
1284 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

1308
Gregory P. Smithd59fefb2008-04-22 08:11:33 +00001309- The getpass module has been improved on Unix. It now uses /dev/tty
1310 by default and uses stderr instead of stdout. A GetPassWarning is
1311 issued when input echo cannot be controlled.
Gregory P. Smith41e30182008-04-21 21:31:08 +00001312

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001326- Issue #2513: distutils on Windows is now capable of cross-compiling
Mark Hammond495cf992008-04-07 01:53:39 +00001327 extension modules between 32 and 64 bit platforms. See the distutls
1328 build documentation for more information.
1329
Gregory P. Smithaa63d0d2008-04-06 23:11:17 +00001330- Issue #815646: Individual file objects may now be used from multiple
1331 threads at once without fear of crashing the Python interpreter. If
1332 file.close() is called while an object is in use by another thread
1333 an IOError exception will be raised and the file will not be closed.
1334
Thomas Hellerf7906482008-04-04 19:43:25 +00001335- The bundled libffi copy is now in sync with the recently released

1338
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001339- Issue #2385: distutils.core.run_script() makes __file__ available,
1340 so the controlled environment will more closely mirror the typical
1341 script environment. This supports setup.py scripts that refer to
1342 data files.

1345-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001346
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001347- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1348 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1349 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1350 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1351 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1352 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1353 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1354 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1355 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1356 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1357 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1358 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1359 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1360 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1361 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1362 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1363 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1364 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1365 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1366 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1367
1368 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1369 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1370 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1371 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1372 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1373 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1374 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1375 access to the underlying socket used.
1376
1377 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1378 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1379 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001380
1381 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001382 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001383 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
1384 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
1385
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001386 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
1387 suite to run in parallel without issue.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc9a0d3462008-03-23 09:55:29 +00001441- Issue #1477: With narrow Unicode builds, the unicode escape sequence
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001442 \Uxxxxxxxx did not accept values outside the Basic Multilingual
1443 Plane. This affected raw unicode literals and the
1444 'raw-unicode-escape' codec. Now UTF-16 surrogates are generated in
1445 this case, like normal unicode literals and the 'unicode-escape'

Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001666- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1667 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be

Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001674- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1675 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1676 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1677 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1678 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1679 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1680
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001681- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new

Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +00001920- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
1921 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
1922 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the
1923 other one is. For backwards compatibility, when both are
1924 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +00001925 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
1926 as supported by type.__new__().
Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +00001927
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001928- Patch #1675423: PyComplex_AsCComplex() now tries to convert an

1930 to the __float__() method. Therefore, the functions in the cmath
1931 module now can operate on objects that define a __complex__()
1932 method.
