34 "offsetof(PyStringObject, ob_sval) + 1" when allocating memory for
35 str instances. On a typical machine this saves 3 bytes of memory
36 (on average) per string allocation.
37
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcdc619012008-11-22 20:01:18 +000038- Issue #3996: On Windows, the PyOS_CheckStack function would cause the

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc32265652008-11-20 23:34:31 +000049 method on file objects with closefd=False. The file descriptor is still
50 kept open but the file object behaves like a closed file. The ``FileIO``
51 object also got a new readonly attribute ``closefd``.
52
Benjamin Peterson46cc6d12008-11-19 21:49:09 +000053- Issue #4348: Some bytearray methods returned that didn't cause any change to

69 __future__ import didn't work.
70
Benjamin Peterson399b1fe2008-10-25 02:53:28 +000071- Using ``nonlocal`` as a variable name will now raise a Py3k SyntaxWarning
Georg Brandl7fb00ad2008-10-25 07:00:52 +000072 because it is a reserved word in 3.x.
Benjamin Peterson399b1fe2008-10-25 02:53:28 +000073

79 is temporarily replaced with an equivalent frozenset. But the eventual
80 KeyError would always report the empty frozenset([]) as the missing key. Now
81 it correctly refers to the initial element.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +0000319- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
320 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
321 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
322 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
323 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
324 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
325 64bit values.
326
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +0000327- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on

329
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd3ffb892008-09-09 07:24:30 +0000330- Issue #3777: long() applied to a float object now always return a long
331 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
332 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
333 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
334
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +0000335- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with

Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000344- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +0000345 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
346 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
347 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
348 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
349 type object.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000489
490Core and Builtins
491-----------------
492
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000493- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
494 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
495 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
496 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
497 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
498 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
499 default.
500
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000501- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
502 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
503
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000504- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
505 value again.
506
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000507- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
508 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
509 and introducing s*.
510
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000511- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
512 object was stored in the freelist.
513
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000514- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
515 ValueError consistently across platforms.
516
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000517- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
518 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
519 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
520
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000521- Apply security patches from Apple.
522
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000523- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
524 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
525
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000526- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
527 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
528
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000529- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
530 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
531 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
532
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000533- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
534 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
535 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
536 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
537 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
538 failed have been fixed.
539
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000540Library
541-------
542
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000543- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
544
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000545- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
546 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
547
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000548- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
549 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
550 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
551
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000552- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
553 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
554 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
555 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
556 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
557 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
558
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000559- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
560 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
561
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000562- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
563
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000564- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
565
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000566- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
567
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000568- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
569 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
570
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000571- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
572 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
573
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000574- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
575 in a redirect.
576
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000577- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +0000578 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000579
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +0000580- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
581 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
582
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000583- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
584 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
585 regular expression.
586
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000587- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
588 thread-safe.
589
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +0000590- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
591 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
592 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
593
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +0000594- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
595
Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +0000596- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
597 menu entries were not deleted.
598
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +0000599- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
600 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
601
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000602- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
603 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
604
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000605- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
606 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
607 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
608
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +0000609- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
610 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
611 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
612
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +0000613- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
614 the reload() built-in has been removed.
615

Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +0000654- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a
655 file name rather than a ZipInfo instance, so files are extracted with
656 mode 0600 rather than 000 under Unix.

685-----------------
686
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000687- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
688 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
689 an integer using operator.index().
690
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000691- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
692 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
693
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000694- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
695 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
696
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000697- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
698 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
699 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
700
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000701- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
702 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
703 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
704 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
705 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
706 level.
707
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000708- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
709 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
710 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
711 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
712 all imports from that module to fail.
713
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000714- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
715 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
716 new-style classes.
717
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000718- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
719 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
720 another file in sys.stdout.
721
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000722- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
723 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
724 another thread's dictionary.
725
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000726- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
727 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
728 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
729 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
730 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
731 10, -1).
732
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000733- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
734 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
735 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000736
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000737- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
738 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into

746 error when they failed.
747
Martin v. Löwisaabf4042008-08-02 07:20:25 +0000748- Issue #799428: Fix Tkinter.Misc._nametowidget to unwrap Tcl command objects.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000773- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
774 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000775 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000776 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never

794
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000795- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001247- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
1248 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
1249 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
1250 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``

1252 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
1253 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support

1315-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001316
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001317- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1318 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1319 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1320 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1321 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1322 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1323 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1324 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1325 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1326 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1327 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1328 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1329 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1330 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1331 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1332 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1333 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1334 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1335 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1336 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1337
1338 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1339 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1340 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1341 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1342 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1343 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1344 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1345 access to the underlying socket used.
1346
1347 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1348 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1349 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001350
1351 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001352 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001353 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
1354 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
1355
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001356 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
1357 suite to run in parallel without issue.

1637 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be

Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001644- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1645 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1646 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1647 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1648 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1649 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1650

Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +00001890- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
1891 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
1892 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the
1893 other one is. For backwards compatibility, when both are

Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +00001895 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
