16 exceptions.
17
Benjamin Petersonc6e80eb2008-12-21 17:01:26 +000018- Issue #2467: gc.DEBUG_STATS reported invalid elapsed times. Also, always
19 print elapsed times, not only when some objects are uncollectable /

21
Jeffrey Yasskin69614982008-12-11 05:21:18 +000022- Issue #4589: Fixed exception handling when the __exit__ function of a

26 method on file objects with closefd=False. The file descriptor is still
27 kept open but the file object behaves like a closed file. The ``FileIO``
28 object also got a new readonly attribute ``closefd``.
29
Georg Brandlfa71a902008-12-05 09:08:28 +000030- Issue #3689: The list reversed iterator now supports __length_hint__

51 zipimport (or any other conformant PEP 302 loader). Original patch by
52 Alexander Belopolsky.
53
54- Issue #4197: doctests in modules loaded via zipimport (or any other PEP
55 302 conformant loader) will now work correctly in most cases (they
56 are still subject to the constraints that exist for all code running
57 from inside a module loaded via a PEP 302 loader and attempting to
58 perform IO operations based on __file__). Original patch by
59 Alexander Belopolsky.
60

108 really executed because I cannot move to such directory on win2k)
109

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +0000299- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
300 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
301 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
302 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
303 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
304 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
305 64bit values.
306
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +0000307- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on

311 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
312 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
313 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
314
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +0000315- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with

Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000321 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"

323
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000324- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +0000325 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
326 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
327 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
328 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
329 type object.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000469
470Core and Builtins
471-----------------
472
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000473- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
474 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
475 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
476 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
477 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
478 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
479 default.
480
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000481- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
482 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
483
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000484- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
485 value again.
486
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000487- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
488 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
489 and introducing s*.
490
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000491- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
492 object was stored in the freelist.
493
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000494- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
495 ValueError consistently across platforms.
496
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000497- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
498 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
499 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
500
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000501- Apply security patches from Apple.
502
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000503- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
504 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
505
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000506- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
507 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
508
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000509- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
510 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
511 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
512
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000513- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
514 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
515 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
516 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
517 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
518 failed have been fixed.
519
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000520Library
521-------
522
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000523- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
524
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000525- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
526 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
527
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000528- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
529 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
530 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
531
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000532- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
533 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
534 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
535 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
536 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
537 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
538
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000539- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
540 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
541
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000542- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
543
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000544- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
545
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000546- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
547
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000548- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
549 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
550
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000551- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
552 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
553
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000554- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
555 in a redirect.
556
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000557- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +0000558 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000559
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +0000560- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
561 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
562
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000563- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
564 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
565 regular expression.
566
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000567- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
568 thread-safe.
569
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +0000570- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
571 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
572 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
573
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +0000574- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
575
Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +0000576- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
577 menu entries were not deleted.
578
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +0000579- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
580 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
581
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000582- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
583 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
584
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000585- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
586 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
587 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
588
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +0000589- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
590 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
591 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
592
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +0000593- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
594 the reload() built-in has been removed.
595

Lars Gustäbel727bd0b2008-08-02 11:26:39 +0000604- Issue #3039: Fix tarfile.TarFileCompat.writestr() which always
605 raised an AttributeError.
606
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000607- Issue #2523: Fix quadratic behaviour when read()ing a binary file without
Antoine Pitroude781a42008-08-09 12:43:23 +0000608 asking for a specific length. This problem only affected files opened
609 using the new "io" module, not the built-in open() function.
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000610

666
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000667- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
668 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
669 an integer using operator.index().
670
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000671- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
672 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
673
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000674- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
675 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
676
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000677- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
678 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
679 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
680
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000681- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
682 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
683 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
684 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
685 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
686 level.
687
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000688- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
689 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
690 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
691 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
692 all imports from that module to fail.
693
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000694- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
695 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
696 new-style classes.

701
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000702- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from

704 another thread's dictionary.
705
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000706- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
707 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
708 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
709 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
710 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
711 10, -1).
712
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000713- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000753- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
754 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000755 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000756 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001227- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
1228 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
1229 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
1230 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``

1232 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
1233 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
1234 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001297- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1298 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1299 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1300 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1301 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1302 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1303 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1304 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1305 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1306 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1307 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1308 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1309 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1310 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1311 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1312 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1313 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1314 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1315 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1316 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1317
1318 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1319 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1320 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1321 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1322 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1323 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1324 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1325 access to the underlying socket used.
1326
1327 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1328 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1329 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001330
1331 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001332 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,

1334 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
1335
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001336 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
1337 suite to run in parallel without issue.

1615
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001616- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1617 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1618 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1619 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1620 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1621 module is:
1622 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1623
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001624- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1625 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1626 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1627 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1628 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1629 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1630
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001631- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1632 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1633 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1634 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1635 PyObject_Format().
1636
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001637- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1638 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1639 state.

1650 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001651
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001652- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a

1668 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +00001669
