67 passed a value less than or equal to zero.
68
Brett Cannone9746892008-04-12 23:44:07 +000069- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the original Python
70 code has been kept as backup). This will allow for using the 'warning's
71 machinery in such places as the parser where use of pure Python code is not
Brett Cannonb457dda2008-05-02 02:25:09 +000072 possible. Both the ``showarning()`` and ``formatwarning()`` gain an
73 optional 'line' argument which is not called by default for
Brett Cannon8a232cc2008-05-05 05:32:07 +000074 backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting ``warnings.showwarning()`` to
75 an implementation that lacks support for the ``line`` argument will raise a
76 DeprecationWarning.

99
Gregory P. Smithd59fefb2008-04-22 08:11:33 +0000100- The getpass module has been improved on Unix. It now uses /dev/tty
101 by default and uses stderr instead of stdout. A GetPassWarning is
102 issued when input echo cannot be controlled.
Gregory P. Smith41e30182008-04-21 21:31:08 +0000103

118 extension modules between 32 and 64 bit platforms. See the distutls
119 build documentation for more information.
120
Gregory P. Smithaa63d0d2008-04-06 23:11:17 +0000121- Issue #815646: Individual file objects may now be used from multiple
122 threads at once without fear of crashing the Python interpreter. If
123 file.close() is called while an object is in use by another thread
124 an IOError exception will be raised and the file will not be closed.
125
Thomas Hellerf7906482008-04-04 19:43:25 +0000126- The bundled libffi copy is now in sync with the recently released
127 libffi3.0.5 version, apart from some small changes to

131 controlled environment will more closely mirror the typical script
132 environment. This supports setup.py scripts that refer to data files.
133
Barry Warsawba437742008-04-04 01:34:41 +0000134Tests
135-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000136- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining ports
137 to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an effort to
138 facilitate running multiple instances of the entire regression test suite
139 in parallel without issue. test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such
140 that it will always return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case
141 with the previous implementation, especially if socket options had been
142 set that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
143 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception if it
144 is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the SO_REUSEADDR or
145 SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if available, bind_port()
146 will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on the socket it's been passed.
147 This currently only applies to Windows. This option prevents any other
148 sockets from binding to the host/port we've bound to, thus removing the
149 possibility of the 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it,
150 that occurs when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a
151 host/port that's already been bound by another socket. The optional
152 preferred port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
153 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
154
155 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will pass
156 a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an unused port.
157 The temporary socket object is then closed and deleted, and the port is
158 returned. This method should only be used for obtaining an unused port
159 in order to pass to an external program (i.e. the -accept [port] argument
160 to openssl's s_server mode) or as a parameter to a server-oriented class
161 that doesn't give you direct access to the underlying socket used.
162
163 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used for
164 the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and connect).
165
166 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
167 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
168 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
169 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
170
171 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test suite to
172 run in parallel without issue.

178
Thomas Hellerdc96a772008-04-04 10:07:55 +0000179- Issue #2544: On HP-UX systems, use 'gcc -shared' for linking when
180 gcc is used as compiler.
181
Ronald Oussoren580c7fe2008-05-02 19:45:11 +0000182- Issue #2573: On MacOS X it is now possible to install the framework
183 with a different name using --with-framework-name=NAME.

189 to the new files Include/pymath.h and Python/pymath.h for
190 platforms which provide the functions through their libm. The
191 files also contains several helpers and constants for math.
192
Benjamin Petersona692c4d2008-04-27 02:28:02 +0000193- Added a new convenience function, PyErr_WarnPy3k, for issuing Py3k
194 warnings.

430
431- Patch #1759: Backport of PEP 3129 class decorators.
Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +0000432
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000433- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +0000434 issue 215555 for a discussion.
435
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +0000436- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
437 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
438 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
439 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
440 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
441 module is:
442 from future_builtins import hex, oct
443
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +0000444- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
445 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
446 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
447 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
448 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
449 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
450
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +0000451- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
452 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
453 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
454 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
455 PyObject_Format().
456
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +0000457- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted __del__
458 methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent state.
459
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000460- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also

465 imaginary part.
466
Andrew M. Kuchlingc6511a82008-03-04 01:48:26 +0000467- Clear all free lists during a gc.collect() of the highest generation in order
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +0000468 to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back memory to the
469 OS earlier.
470

472 collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set to a bound method.
473
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +0000474- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
475 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
476
Christian Heimes6075a822008-02-06 12:44:34 +0000477- Limit free list of method and builtin function objects to 256 entries

500 same object as the func_code attribute of the function that produced the
501 generator.
502
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +0000503- Issue #1920: "while 0" statements were completely removed by the compiler,
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000504 even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is supposed to be run when
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +0000505 the condition is false. Now the compiler correctly emits bytecode for the

609 shifts from ints to longs.
610
Brett Cannon0b14f242007-09-30 19:45:10 +0000611- Issue #1686386: Tuple's tp_repr did not take into account the possibility of
612 having a self-referential tuple, which is possible from C code. Nor did
613 object's tp_str consider that a type's tp_str could do something that could
614 lead to an inifinite recursion. Py_ReprEnter() and Py_EnterRecursiveCall(),
615 respectively, fixed the issues.
616
Brett Cannon01531592007-09-17 03:28:34 +0000617- Issue #1164: It was possible to trigger deadlock when using the 'print'
618 statement to write to a file since the GIL was not released as needed. Now
619 PyObject_Print() does the right thing along with various tp_print
620 implementations of the built-in types and those in the collections module.

629 PyObject_Call() never calling back out to Python code to trigger recursion
630 depth updates/checks. Required the creation of a static RuntimeError
631 instance in case normalizing an exception put the recursion check value past
632 its limit. Fixes crashers infinite_rec_(1|2|4|5).py.

Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +0000679- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
680 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
681 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the
682 other one is. For backwards compatibility, when both are
683 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +0000684 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
685 as supported by type.__new__().
Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +0000686
Georg Brandl2b869942007-03-17 16:08:45 +0000687- Patch #1675423: PyComplex_AsCComplex() now tries to convert an object
688 to complex using its __complex__() method before falling back to the
689 __float__() method. Therefore, the functions in the cmath module now
690 can operate on objects that define a __complex__() method.

2035-----
2036
Christian Heimes5b970ad2008-02-06 13:33:44 +00002037- Unified naming convention for free lists and their limits. All free lists
2038 in Object/ are named ``free_list``, the counter ``numfree`` and the upper
2039 limit is a macro ``PyName_MAXFREELIST`` inside an #ifndef block.
2040
Amaury Forgeot d'Arccab3d982008-02-03 22:51:43 +00002041- ``PySet_Add()`` can now modify a newly created frozenset. Similarly to
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00002042 ``PyTuple_SetItem``, it can be used to populate a brand new frozenset; but
Amaury Forgeot d'Arccab3d982008-02-03 22:51:43 +00002043 it does not steal a reference to the added item.
2044
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00002045- Added ``PySet_Check()`` and ``PyFrozenSet_Check()`` to the set API.

2049 public functions.
2050
2051- Patch #1720595: add T_BOOL to the range of structmember types.

2054 ``PyFloat_GetInfo()`` to the float API.
2055
2056- Issue #1521: On 64bit platforms, using PyArgs_ParseTuple with the t# of w#
2057 format code incorrectly truncated the length to an int, even when
2058 PY_SSIZE_T_CLEAN is set. The str.decode method used to return incorrect
2059 results with huge strings.
2060
2061- Issue #1629: Renamed Py_Size, Py_Type and Py_Refcnt to Py_SIZE, Py_TYPE
2062 and Py_REFCNT.
2063
2064- PEP 3123: Provide forward compatibility with Python 3.0, while keeping
2065 backwards compatibility. Add Py_Refcnt, Py_Type, Py_Size, and
2066 PyVarObject_HEAD_INIT.
2067
2068- Py_ssize_t fields work in structmember when HAVE_LONG_LONG is not defined.
2069
2070- Patch #1733960: Allow T_LONGLONG to accept ints.

2079 (relevant to strings and sequences of more than 2**31 items).
2080
2081- Make _PyGILState_NoteThreadState() static, it was not used anywhere
2082 outside of pystate.c and should not be necessary.
2083
Christian Heimes000a0742008-01-03 22:16:32 +00002084- ``PyImport_Import`` and ``PyImport_ImportModule`` now always do absolute
2085 imports. In earlier versions they might have used relative imports under
2086 some conditions.
2087
Andrew M. Kuchlingadc60ab2008-01-04 02:26:00 +00002088- Added case insensitive comparison methods ``PyOS_stricmp(char*, char*)``
Christian Heimes000a0742008-01-03 22:16:32 +00002089 and ``PyOS_strnicmp(char*, char*, Py_ssize_t)``.

Christian Heimes95d64472008-02-09 19:55:22 +00002099 Windows 2000 or greater. The _WINVER and NTDDI_VERSION macros are set to
2100 Win2k for x86/32bit builds and WinXP for AMD64 builds.
