11
12Core and Builtins
13-----------------
14
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +000015- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
16 a unicode argument.
17
Benjamin Peterson17f03ca2008-09-01 14:18:30 +000018- Issue #3683: Fix compilation when --without-threads is given.
19
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000020- Issue #3668: Fix a memory leak with the "s*" argument parser in
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000021 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000022 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
23
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000024- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +000025 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
26 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
27 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
28 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
29 type object.
30
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +000031- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.
32

34
35- Fix compiler warnings in opt mode which would lead to invalid memory reads.
36
37- Fix problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker.
38
Christian Heimesfb1813c2008-08-22 19:34:15 +000039- Issue #3642: Changed type of numarenas from uint to size_t
40 in order to silence a compilier warning on 64bit OSes.
41
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +000042- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
43 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
44
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +000045- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
46 ``__delslice__``.
47
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +000048- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared
49 library targets in the Makefile.
50
Benjamin Peterson14cb6bc2008-08-26 17:08:40 +000051C-API

65
Facundo Batistac585df92008-09-03 22:35:50 +000066- Issue 600362: Relocated parse_qs() and parse_qsl(), from the cgi module
67 to the urlparse one. Added a PendingDeprecationWarning in the old
68 module, it will be deprecated in the future.
69
Marc-André Lemburgb339b2a2008-09-03 11:13:56 +000070- Issue #2562: Fix distutils PKG-INFO writing logic to allow having

72
73- Issue #3726: Allow spaces in separators in logging configuration files.
Vinay Sajip6a2fd812008-09-03 09:20:05 +000074

118
Barry Warsaw07a4a382008-08-21 01:15:08 +0000119*Release date: 20-Aug-2008*
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000120
121Core and Builtins
122-----------------
123
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000124- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
125 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
126 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
127 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
128 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
129 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
130 default.
131
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000132- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
133 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
134
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000135- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
136 value again.
137
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000138- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
139 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
140 and introducing s*.
141
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000142- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
143 object was stored in the freelist.
144
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000145- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
146 ValueError consistently across platforms.
147
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000148- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
149 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
150 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
151
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000152- Apply security patches from Apple.
153
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000154- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
155 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
156
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000157- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
158 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
159
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000160- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
161 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
162 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
163
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000164- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
165 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
166 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
167 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
168 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
169 failed have been fixed.
170
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000171Library
172-------
173
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000174- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
175
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000176- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
177 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
178
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000179- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
180 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
181 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
182
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000183- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
184 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
185 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
186 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
187 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
188 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
189
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000190- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
191 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
192
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000193- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
194
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000195- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
196
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000197- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
198
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000199- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
200 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
201
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000202- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
203 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
204
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000205- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
206 in a redirect.
207
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000208- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +0000209 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000210
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +0000211- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
212 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
213
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000214- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
215 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
216 regular expression.
217
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000218- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
219 thread-safe.
220
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +0000221- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
222 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
223 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
224
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +0000225- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
226
Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +0000227- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
228 menu entries were not deleted.
229
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +0000230- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
231 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
232
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000233- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
234 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
235
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000236- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
237 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
238 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
239
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +0000240- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
241 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
242 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
243
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +0000244- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
245 the reload() built-in has been removed.
246
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000247- Changed code in the following modules/packages to remove warnings raised
Brett Cannonc1b76e42008-08-09 23:06:16 +0000248 while running under the ``-3`` flag: aifc, asynchat, asyncore, bdb, bsddb,
Brett Cannon047e4a92008-08-17 04:16:04 +0000249 ConfigParser, cookielib, csv, difflib, distutils, DocXMLRPCServer, email,

253 threading, tokenize, traceback, urlparse, wsgiref, xml, xmlrpclib.
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000254
Lars Gustäbel727bd0b2008-08-02 11:26:39 +0000255- Issue #3039: Fix tarfile.TarFileCompat.writestr() which always
256 raised an AttributeError.
257

Antoine Pitroude781a42008-08-09 12:43:23 +0000259 asking for a specific length. This problem only affected files opened
260 using the new "io" module, not the built-in open() function.
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000261
Mark Dickinsonfe84cce2008-07-27 06:39:07 +0000262- Issue #3449: Update decimal module to use most recent specification

284
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +0000285- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a

Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000318- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
319 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
320 an integer using operator.index().
321
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000322- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
323 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
324
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000325- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
326 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
327
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000328- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
329 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
330 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
331
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000332- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
333 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
334 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
335 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
336 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
337 level.
338
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000339- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
340 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
341 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
342 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
343 all imports from that module to fail.
344
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000345- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
346 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
347 new-style classes.
348
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000349- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
350 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
351 another file in sys.stdout.
352
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000353- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
354 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
355 another thread's dictionary.
356
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000357- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
358 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
359 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
360 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
361 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
362 10, -1).
363
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000364- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
365 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
366 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000367
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000368- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
369 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
370 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +0000371

376 api functions without holding the GIL, which could lead to a fatal
377 error when they failed.
378

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000404- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
405 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000406 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000407 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000878- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
879 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
880 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
881 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``

883 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
884 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000948- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
949 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
950 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
951 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
952 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
953 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
954 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
955 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
956 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
957 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
958 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
959 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
960 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
961 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
962 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
963 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
964 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
965 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
966 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
967 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
968
969 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
970 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
971 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
972 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
973 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
974 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
975 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
976 access to the underlying socket used.
977
978 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
979 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
980 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000981
982 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000983 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000984 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
985 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
986
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000987 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
988 suite to run in parallel without issue.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc9a0d3462008-03-23 09:55:29 +00001042- Issue #1477: With narrow Unicode builds, the unicode escape sequence
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001043 \Uxxxxxxxx did not accept values outside the Basic Multilingual

1046 this case, like normal unicode literals and the 'unicode-escape'
1047 codec.

Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +00001263
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001264- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +00001265 issue 215555 for a discussion.
1266
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001267- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1268 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1269 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1270 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1271 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1272 module is:
1273 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1274
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001275- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1276 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1277 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1278 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1279 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1280 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1281
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001282- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1283 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1284 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1285 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1286 PyObject_Format().
1287
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001288- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1289 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1290 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +00001291
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001292- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also

1301 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001302
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001303- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a

1305 to a bound method.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcb01aa432008-02-08 00:56:02 +00001306
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +00001307- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
1308 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
1309

1319 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +00001320

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001333- Patch #1473257: generator objects gain a gi_code attribute. This is
1334 the same object as the func_code attribute of the function that
1335 produced the generator.
Georg Brandl0cdf9a32008-01-26 14:14:20 +00001336
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001337- Issue #1920: "while 0" statements were completely removed by the
1338 compiler, even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is
1339 supposed to be run when the condition is false. Now the compiler
1340 correctly emits bytecode for the "else" suite.
