12Core and Builtins
13-----------------
14
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +000015- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
16 a unicode argument.
17
Benjamin Peterson17f03ca2008-09-01 14:18:30 +000018- Issue #3683: Fix compilation when --without-threads is given.
19
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000020- Issue #3668: Fix a memory leak with the "s*" argument parser in
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000021 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000022 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
23
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000024- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +000025 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
26 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
27 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
28 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
29 type object.
30
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +000031- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.
32

36
37- Fix problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker.
38
Christian Heimesfb1813c2008-08-22 19:34:15 +000039- Issue #3642: Changed type of numarenas from uint to size_t
40 in order to silence a compilier warning on 64bit OSes.
41
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +000042- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
43 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
44
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +000045- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
46 ``__delslice__``.
47
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +000048- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared
49 library targets in the Makefile.
50
Benjamin Peterson14cb6bc2008-08-26 17:08:40 +000051C-API

67 to the urlparse one. Added a PendingDeprecationWarning in the old
68 module, it will be deprecated in the future.
69
Marc-André Lemburgb339b2a2008-09-03 11:13:56 +000070- Issue #2562: Fix distutils PKG-INFO writing logic to allow having

72
73- Issue #3726: Allow spaces in separators in logging configuration files.
Vinay Sajip6a2fd812008-09-03 09:20:05 +000074

104 from the same python interpreter, some environment variables would grow
105 without limit.
106
Benjamin Peterson37346b22008-08-23 20:27:43 +0000107- Issue #3643: Added a few more checks to _testcapi to prevent segfaults by

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000126
127Core and Builtins
128-----------------
129
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000130- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
131 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
132 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
133 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
134 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
135 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
136 default.
137
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000138- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
139 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
140
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000141- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
142 value again.
143
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000144- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
145 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
146 and introducing s*.
147
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000148- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
149 object was stored in the freelist.
150
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000151- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
152 ValueError consistently across platforms.
153
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000154- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
155 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
156 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
157
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000158- Apply security patches from Apple.
159
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000160- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
161 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
162
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000163- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
164 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
165
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000166- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
167 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
168 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
169
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000170- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
171 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
172 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
173 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
174 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
175 failed have been fixed.
176
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000177Library
178-------
179
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000180- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
181
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000182- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
183 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
184
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000185- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
186 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
187 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
188
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000189- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
190 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
191 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
192 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
193 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
194 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
195
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000196- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
197 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
198
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000199- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
200
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000201- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
202
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000203- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
204
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000205- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
206 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
207
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000208- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
209 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
210
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000211- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
212 in a redirect.
213
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000214- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +0000215 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000216
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +0000217- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
218 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
219
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000220- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
221 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
222 regular expression.
223
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000224- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
225 thread-safe.
226
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +0000227- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
228 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
229 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
230
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +0000231- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
232
Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +0000233- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
234 menu entries were not deleted.
235
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +0000236- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
237 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
238
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000239- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
240 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
241
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000242- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
243 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
244 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
245
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +0000246- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
247 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
248 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
249
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +0000250- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
251 the reload() built-in has been removed.
252

Brett Cannonc1b76e42008-08-09 23:06:16 +0000254 while running under the ``-3`` flag: aifc, asynchat, asyncore, bdb, bsddb,
Brett Cannon047e4a92008-08-17 04:16:04 +0000255 ConfigParser, cookielib, csv, difflib, distutils, DocXMLRPCServer, email,

259 threading, tokenize, traceback, urlparse, wsgiref, xml, xmlrpclib.
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000260
Lars Gustäbel727bd0b2008-08-02 11:26:39 +0000261- Issue #3039: Fix tarfile.TarFileCompat.writestr() which always
262 raised an AttributeError.
263

Antoine Pitroude781a42008-08-09 12:43:23 +0000265 asking for a specific length. This problem only affected files opened
266 using the new "io" module, not the built-in open() function.
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000267

290
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +0000291- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a

320
Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000321Core and Builtins
322-----------------
323
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000324- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
325 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
326 an integer using operator.index().
327
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000328- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
329 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
330
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000331- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
332 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
333
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000334- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
335 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
336 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
337
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000338- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
339 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
340 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
341 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
342 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
343 level.
344
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000345- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
346 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
347 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
348 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
349 all imports from that module to fail.
350
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000351- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
352 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
353 new-style classes.
354
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000355- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
356 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
357 another file in sys.stdout.
358
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000359- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
360 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
361 another thread's dictionary.
362
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000363- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
364 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
365 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
366 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
367 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
368 10, -1).
369
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000370- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
371 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
372 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000373
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000374- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
375 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
376 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +0000377
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000378Library
379-------
380
Thomas Heller57adf222008-08-14 19:10:48 +0000381- Issue #3554: ctypes.string_at and ctypes.wstring_at did call Python
382 api functions without holding the GIL, which could lead to a fatal
383 error when they failed.
384
Martin v. Löwisaabf4042008-08-02 07:20:25 +0000385- Issue #799428: Fix Tkinter.Misc._nametowidget to unwrap Tcl command objects.

392
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000393- Issue #3125: Remove copy_reg in multiprocessing and replace it with
394 ForkingPickler.register() to resolve conflict with ctypes.
395
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000396- Issue #3090: Fixed ARCHFLAGS parsing on OS/X

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000410- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
411 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000412 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000413 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
414 merged into trunk.

Nick Coghlanc060b0e2008-07-02 13:09:19 +0000429- Issue #3190: Pydoc now hides the automatic module attribute __package__ (the
430 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
431
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000432- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for

Gregory P. Smith3b1e6b22008-07-07 04:31:58 +0000439 properly when raising an exception due to the bz2file being closed.
440 Prevents a deadlock.

Gregory P. Smithc4691ec2008-07-07 05:09:12 +0000442- Issue #3094: httplib.HTTPSConnection Host: headers no longer include the
443 redundant ":443" port number designation when the connection is using the
444 default https port (443).

447 up in the child process to prevent deadlock and report proper thread counts
448 if the new process uses the threading module.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000884- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
885 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
886 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
887 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
888 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
889 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
890 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000954- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
955 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
956 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
957 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
958 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
959 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
960 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
961 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
962 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
963 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
964 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
965 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
966 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
967 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
968 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
969 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
970 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
971 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
972 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
973 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
974
975 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
976 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
977 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
978 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
979 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
980 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
981 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
982 access to the underlying socket used.
983
984 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
985 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
986 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000987
988 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000989 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000990 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
991 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
992
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000993 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
994 suite to run in parallel without issue.

Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +00001269
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001270- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +00001271 issue 215555 for a discussion.
1272
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001273- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1274 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1275 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1276 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1277 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1278 module is:
1279 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1280
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001281- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1282 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1283 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1284 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1285 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1286 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1287
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001288- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1289 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1290 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1291 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1292 PyObject_Format().
1293
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001294- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1295 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1296 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +00001297
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001298- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also

1306 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1307 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001308
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001309- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
1310 subclass of collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set
1311 to a bound method.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcb01aa432008-02-08 00:56:02 +00001312
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +00001313- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
1314 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
1315
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001316- Limit free list of method and builtin function objects to 256

1325 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +00001326

1341 produced the generator.
Georg Brandl0cdf9a32008-01-26 14:14:20 +00001342
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001343- Issue #1920: "while 0" statements were completely removed by the
1344 compiler, even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is
1345 supposed to be run when the condition is false. Now the compiler
1346 correctly emits bytecode for the "else" suite.
