342Core and builtins
343-----------------
344
Neal Norwitz24b6f202006-09-05 04:43:56 +0000345- Fix infinite recursion when subclassing long and overriding __hash__.
346
347- Fix concatenation (+=) of long strings.
348
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000349- Unicode objects will no longer raise an exception when being
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000350 compared equal or unequal to a string and a UnicodeDecodeError
351 exception occurs, e.g. as result of a decoding failure.
Neal Norwitz56423e52006-08-13 18:11:08 +0000352
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000353 Instead, the equal (==) and unequal (!=) comparison operators will
354 now issue a UnicodeWarning and interpret the two objects as
355 unequal. The UnicodeWarning can be filtered as desired using
356 the warning framework, e.g. silenced completely, turned into an
357 exception, logged, etc.
358
359 Note that compare operators other than equal and unequal will still
360 raise UnicodeDecodeError exceptions as they've always done.
Neal Norwitz8a87f5d2006-08-12 17:03:09 +0000361
Marc-André Lemburg757ea272006-08-14 11:44:34 +0000362- Fix segfault when doing string formatting on subclasses of long.
363
364- Fix bug related to __len__ functions using values > 2**32 on 64-bit machines
365 with new-style classes.
366
367- Fix bug related to __len__ functions returning negative values with
368 classic classes.
369
370- Patch #1538606, Fix __index__() clipping. There were some problems
371 discovered with the API and how integers that didn't fit into Py_ssize_t
372 were handled. This patch attempts to provide enough alternatives
373 to effectively use __index__.
374
Martin v. Löwisab2f8f72006-08-09 07:57:39 +0000375- Bug #1536021: __hash__ may now return long int; the final hash
376 value is obtained by invoking hash on the long int.
377
Thomas Hellerab1049c2006-08-08 17:37:00 +0000378- Bug #1536786: buffer comparison could emit a RuntimeWarning.
379
Georg Brandl7e3ba2a2006-08-06 08:23:54 +0000380- Bug #1535165: fixed a segfault in input() and raw_input() when
381 sys.stdin is closed.
382
Thomas Heller74d36f02006-08-04 18:17:40 +0000383- On Windows, the PyErr_Warn function is now exported from
384 the Python dll again.
385
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000386- Bug #1191458: tracing over for loops now produces a line event
387 on each iteration. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc
388 magic number. This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5c1
389 will be regenerated.
390
Neal Norwitz0cbd8052006-08-04 05:09:28 +0000391- Bug #1333982: string/number constants were inappropriately stored
392 in the byte code and co_consts even if they were not used, ie
393 immediately popped off the stack.
394
Georg Brandle9462c72006-08-04 18:03:37 +0000395- Fixed a reference-counting problem in property().

Neil Schemenauer4c6b0d52006-08-16 23:38:05 +0000401- Fix a bug in the ``compiler`` package that caused invalid code to be
402 generated for generator expressions.
403
Marc-André Lemburg574cfea2006-08-16 16:11:01 +0000404- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0. The change to
405 keep it programmatically in sync with the Python version running
406 the code (introduced in 2.5b3) has been reverted. It will continue
407 to be maintained manually as static string literal.
408
Andrew M. Kuchlingc13324e2006-08-16 17:11:18 +0000409- If the Python part of a ctypes callback function returns None,
Thomas Hellerb4a0cf12006-08-16 15:10:12 +0000410 and this cannot be converted to the required C type, an exception is
411 printed with PyErr_WriteUnraisable. Before this change, the C
Andrew M. Kuchlingc13324e2006-08-16 17:11:18 +0000412 callback returned arbitrary values to the calling code.
Thomas Hellerb4a0cf12006-08-16 15:10:12 +0000413
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000414- The __repr__ method of a NULL ctypes.py_object() no longer raises

416
Tim Peterscbdd3502006-09-05 01:47:53 +0000417- uuid.UUID now has a bytes_le attribute. This returns the UUID in
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000418 little-endian byte order for Windows. In addition, uuid.py gained some
Anthony Baxter58179592006-08-16 13:08:25 +0000419 workarounds for clocks with low resolution, to stop the code yielding
420 duplicate UUIDs.
421
Kurt B. Kaiserd112bc72006-08-16 05:01:42 +0000422- Patch #1540892: site.py Quitter() class attempts to close sys.stdin
423 before raising SystemExit, allowing IDLE to honor quit() and exit().
424
Neal Norwitzbf8c1952006-08-15 04:14:57 +0000425- Bug #1224621: make tabnanny recognize IndentationErrors raised by tokenize.
426
Georg Brandl7a1af772006-08-14 21:55:28 +0000427- Patch #1536071: trace.py should now find the full module name of a

Georg Brandl0a7d1bb2006-08-11 07:26:10 +0000430- logging's atexit hook now runs even if the rest of the module has
431 already been cleaned up.
432
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000433- Bug #1112549, fix DoS attack on cgi.FieldStorage.
Guido van Rossum133f4e42006-08-10 17:42:50 +0000434
Neal Norwitzff4b63b2006-08-04 04:50:21 +0000435- Bug #1531405, format_exception no longer raises an exception if
436 str(exception) raised an exception.
437
Neil Schemenauer06ded092006-08-04 16:20:30 +0000438- Fix a bug in the ``compiler`` package that caused invalid code to be
439 generated for nested functions.

450 raises the correct exceptions.
451
Thomas Heller1ce433e2006-08-14 16:20:04 +0000452- Patch # 1536908: enable building ctypes on OpenBSD/AMD64. The

454
Thomas Heller86720042006-08-14 11:17:48 +0000455- Patch #1532975 was applied, which fixes Bug #1533481: ctypes now

457 function calls. The ctypes version number was changed to 1.0.1.
458
Bob Ippolitoe6c9f982006-08-04 23:59:21 +0000459- Bug #1530559, struct.pack raises TypeError where it used to convert.

513
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000514- _PyWeakref_GetWeakrefCount() now returns a Py_ssize_t; it previously

516
Neal Norwitzf71ec5a2006-07-30 06:57:04 +0000517- Bug #1515471: string.replace() accepts character buffers again.
518
Neal Norwitz07aadb12006-07-30 06:55:48 +0000519- Add PyErr_WarnEx() so C code can pass the stacklevel to warnings.warn().
520 This provides the proper warning for struct.pack().
521 PyErr_Warn() is now deprecated in favor of PyErr_WarnEx().
522
Neal Norwitz0d62a062006-07-30 06:53:31 +0000523- Patch #1531113: Fix augmented assignment with yield expressions.
524 Also fix a SystemError when trying to assign to yield expressions.
525
Phillip J. Ebyf7575d02006-07-28 21:12:07 +0000526- Bug #1529871: The speed enhancement patch #921466 broke Python's compliance
527 with PEP 302. This was fixed by adding an ``imp.NullImporter`` type that is
528 used in ``sys.path_importer_cache`` to cache non-directory paths and avoid
529 excessive filesystem operations during imports.
530
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +0000531- Bug #1521947: When checking for overflow, ``PyOS_strtol()`` used some
532 operations on signed longs that are formally undefined by C.
533 Unfortunately, at least one compiler now cares about that, so complicated
534 the code to make that compiler happy again.
535
Martin v. Löwis982e9fe2006-07-24 12:54:17 +0000536- Bug #1524310: Properly report errors from FindNextFile in os.listdir.

547
Georg Brandl9dceedb2006-07-12 15:31:17 +0000548- Patch #1521179: Python now accepts the standard options ``--help`` and

550
Andrew M. Kuchling93c928e2006-07-26 17:19:39 +0000551- Bug #1520864: unpacking singleton tuples in a 'for' loop (for x, in) works
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000552 again. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc magic number.
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000553 This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5b3 will be regenerated.
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000554
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000555- Bug #1524317: Compiling Python ``--without-threads`` failed.
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000556 The Python core compiles again, and, in a build without threads, the

567 for stream decoder, but final=True for the decode function.
568
Georg Brandl07fec3a2006-08-01 18:49:24 +0000569- os.urandom no longer masks unrelated exceptions like SystemExit or

577
Tim Peterscbdd3502006-09-05 01:47:53 +0000578- The renaming of the xml package to xmlcore, and the import hackery done

584
Tim Peters6f681472006-07-27 23:44:37 +0000585- Bug #1529297: The rewrite of doctest for Python 2.4 unintentionally
586 lost that tests are sorted by name before being run. This rarely
587 matters for well-written tests, but can create baffling symptoms if
588 side effects from one test to the next affect outcomes. ``DocTestFinder``
589 has been changed to sort the list of tests it returns.
590
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000591- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0, and is now kept

Brett Cannoncaebe222006-07-18 04:41:36 +0000611- Bug #1520914: Change time.strftime() to accept a zero for any position in its
612 argument tuple. For arguments where zero is illegal, the value is forced to
613 the minimum value that is correct. This is to support an undocumented but
614 common way people used to fill in inconsequential information in the time
615 tuple pre-2.4.
616
Bob Ippolito5ea4bf12006-07-15 16:53:15 +0000617- Patch #1220874: Update the binhex module for Mach-O.
618
Barry Warsawb110bad2006-07-21 14:51:07 +0000619- The email package has improved RFC 2231 support, specifically for
620 recognizing the difference between encoded (name*0*=<blah>) and non-encoded
621 (name*0=<blah>) parameter continuations. This may change the types of
622 values returned from email.message.Message.get_param() and friends.
623 Specifically in some cases where non-encoded continuations were used,
624 get_param() used to return a 3-tuple of (None, None, string) whereas now it
625 will just return the string (since non-encoded continuations don't have
626 charset and language parts).
627
628 Also, whereas % values were decoded in all parameter continuations, they are
629 now only decoded in encoded parameter parts.
630
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +0000631- Bug #1517990: IDLE keybindings on MacOS X now work correctly
632
633- Bug #1517996: IDLE now longer shows the default Tk menu when a
634 path browser, class browser or debugger is the frontmost window on MacOS X
635
Barry Warsaw00decd72006-07-27 23:43:15 +0000636- Patch #1520294: Support for getset and member descriptors in types.py,
637 inspect.py, and pydoc.py. Specifically, this allows for querying the type
638 of an object against these built-in types and more importantly, for getting
639 their docstrings printed in the interactive interpreter's help() function.

646 a socket operation on a socket with a timeout, the exception will be
647 caught correctly. Previously, the exception was not caught.
648
Thomas Heller1393d6a2006-07-28 21:43:20 +0000649- Patch #1529514: The _ctypes extension is now compiled on more

651
Tim Peters9cab5932006-07-28 00:30:00 +0000652- The ``__reduce__()`` method of the new ``collections.defaultdict`` had

662 arrays, without the need to check the array size before.
663
Thomas Heller6e1ad2e2006-07-13 17:05:13 +0000664- Bug #1521375: When the code in ctypes.util.find_library was

Thomas Heller2bdf29e2006-07-13 17:01:14 +0000666 /dev/null in certain cases; this is now fixed.
667
Thomas Heller47d7a062006-07-12 08:43:47 +0000668- Bug #1467450: On Mac OS X 10.3, RTLD_GLOBAL is now used as the
669 default mode for loading shared libraries in ctypes.
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000670
Thomas Hellerb4dc2ef2006-07-13 09:53:47 +0000671- Because of a misspelled preprocessor symbol, ctypes was always

687
Georg Brandl4793aa32006-07-28 18:31:39 +0000688- Patch #1529686: The standard tests ``test_defaultdict``, ``test_iterlen``,

Neal Norwitzfb48afa2006-07-08 05:31:37 +0000733- Bug #1519018: 'as' is now validated properly in import statements.
734
Neal Norwitz28746ab2006-07-09 22:14:42 +0000735- On 64 bit systems, int literals that use less than 64 bits are
736 now ints rather than longs.
737
Neal Norwitzed657552006-07-10 00:04:44 +0000738- Bug #1512814, Fix incorrect lineno's when code at module scope

740
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +0000741- New function ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dict mapping thread
742 id to topmost thread stack frame. This is for expert use, and is
743 especially useful for debugging application deadlocks. The functionality
744 was previously available in Fazal Majid's ``threadframe`` extension
745 module, but it wasn't possible to do this in a wholly threadsafe way from
746 an extension.

766 be treated as the value they contain, instead.
767
Martin v. Löwisede77f52006-07-03 13:01:35 +0000768- Bug #822974: Honor timeout in telnetlib.{expect,read_until}

793
Brett Cannon53ab5b72006-06-22 16:49:14 +0000794- Bug #1510580: The 'warnings' module improperly required that a Warning
795 category be either a types.ClassType and a subclass of Warning. The proper
796 check is just that it is a subclass with Warning as the documentation states.
797
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +0000798- The compiler module now correctly compiles the new try-except-finally

805
Gerhard Häring762fbd32006-07-02 17:48:30 +0000806- The sqlite3 module did cut off data from the SQLite database at the first

Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000813- #1494314: Fix a regression with high-numbered sockets in 2.4.3. This
814 means that select() on sockets > FD_SETSIZE (typically 1024) work again.
815 The patch makes sockets use poll() internally where available.
Anthony Baxter93ab5fa2006-07-11 02:04:09 +0000816
Thomas Hellerb9cb84f2006-07-10 11:17:37 +0000817- Assigning None to pointer type fields in ctypes structures possible
818 overwrote the wrong fields, this is fixed now.
819
820- Fixed a segfault in _ctypes when ctypes.wintypes were imported
821 on non-Windows platforms.
822
823- Bug #1518190: The ctypes.c_void_p constructor now accepts any
824 integer or long, without range checking.
825
826- Patch #1517790: It is now possible to use custom objects in the ctypes
827 foreign function argtypes sequence as long as they provide a from_param
828 method, no longer is it required that the object is a ctypes type.
829
830- The '_ctypes' extension module now works when Python is configured
831 with the --without-threads option.
832
Martin v. Löwisee1e06d2006-07-02 18:44:00 +0000833- Bug #1513646: os.access on Windows now correctly determines write

848
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +0000849- 'configure' now detects the zlib library the same way as distutils.
Thomas Woutersfc34f6c2006-07-06 10:48:28 +0000850 Previously, the slight difference could cause compilation errors of the
851 'zlib' module on systems with more than one version of zlib.
852
Martin v. Löwis4cbd05c2006-07-06 07:05:21 +0000853- The MSI compileall step was fixed to also support a TARGETDIR

885-----------------
886
Georg Brandla56b9152006-06-19 06:35:54 +0000887- Patch #1507676: Error messages returned by invalid abstract object operations
888 (such as iterating over an integer) have been improved and now include the
889 type of the offending object to help with debugging.
890
Brett Cannonea3912b2006-06-13 21:46:41 +0000891- Bug #992017: A classic class that defined a __coerce__() method that returned
892 its arguments swapped would infinitely recurse and segfault the interpreter.
893
Neal Norwitz909eb122006-06-12 02:13:21 +0000894- Fix the socket tests so they can be run concurrently.
895
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +0000896- Removed 5 integers from C frame objects (PyFrameObject).
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +0000897 f_nlocals, f_ncells, f_nfreevars, f_stack_size, f_restricted.
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +0000898
Brett Cannon22565aa2006-06-09 22:31:23 +0000899- Bug #532646: object.__call__() will continue looking for the __call__
900 attribute on objects until one without one is found. This leads to recursion
901 when you take a class and set its __call__ attribute to an instance of the
902 class. Originally fixed for classic classes, but this fix is for new-style.
903 Removes the infinite_rec_3 crasher.
904
Georg Brandl24250812006-06-09 18:45:48 +0000905- The string and unicode methods startswith() and endswith() now accept
906 a tuple of prefixes/suffixes to look for. Implements RFE #1491485.
907
Brett Cannonde3b0522006-06-08 17:00:45 +0000908- Buffer objects, at the C level, never used the char buffer
909 implementation even when the char buffer for the wrapped object was
910 explicitly requested (originally returned the read or write buffer).
911 Now a TypeError is raised if the char buffer is not present but is
912 requested.
913
Georg Brandlddbaa662006-06-04 21:56:52 +0000914- Patch #1346214: Statements like "if 0: suite" are now again optimized
915 away like they were in Python 2.4.
916
Georg Brandlb7c8f542006-05-27 12:30:25 +0000917- Builtin exceptions are now full-blown new-style classes instead of
918 instances pretending to be classes, which speeds up exception handling
919 by about 80% in comparison to 2.5a2.
920
Martin v. Löwisd004fc82006-05-27 08:36:52 +0000921- Patch #1494554: Update unicodedata.numeric and unicode.isnumeric to
922 Unicode 4.1.
923
Georg Brandlf4ef1162006-05-26 18:03:31 +0000924- Patch #921466: sys.path_importer_cache is now used to cache valid and
925 invalid file paths for the built-in import machinery which leads to
926 fewer open calls on startup.
927
Tim Peters696cf432006-05-24 21:10:40 +0000928- Patch #1442927: ``long(str, base)`` is now up to 6x faster for non-power-
929 of-2 bases. The largest speedup is for inputs with about 1000 decimal
930 digits. Conversion from non-power-of-2 bases remains quadratic-time in
931 the number of input digits (it was and remains linear-time for bases
932 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32).
933
Tim Petersb713ec22006-05-23 18:45:30 +0000934- Bug #1334662: ``int(string, base)`` could deliver a wrong answer
935 when ``base`` was not 2, 4, 8, 10, 16 or 32, and ``string`` represented
936 an integer close to ``sys.maxint``. This was repaired by patch
937 #1335972, which also gives a nice speedup.
938
Richard Jonescebbefc2006-05-23 18:28:17 +0000939- Patch #1337051: reduced size of frame objects.
940
941- PyErr_NewException now accepts a tuple of base classes as its
942 "base" parameter.
943
Richard Jones7c88dcc2006-05-23 10:37:38 +0000944- Patch #876206: function call speedup by retaining allocated frame
945 objects.
946
Georg Brandl7b90e162006-05-18 07:01:27 +0000947- Bug #1462152: file() now checks more thoroughly for invalid mode
948 strings and removes a possible "U" before passing the mode to the
949 C library function.
950
Neal Norwitz1004a532006-05-15 07:17:23 +0000951- Patch #1488312, Fix memory alignment problem on SPARC in unicode
952
Neal Norwitz373f0a72006-05-15 07:04:36 +0000953- Bug #1487966: Fix SystemError with conditional expression in assignment
954
Martin v. Löwis879768d2006-05-11 13:28:43 +0000955- WindowsError now has two error code attributes: errno, which carries
956 the error values from errno.h, and winerror, which carries the error
957 values from winerror.h. Previous versions put the winerror.h values
958 (from GetLastError()) into the errno attribute.
959
Martin v. Löwis77736712006-05-04 05:51:03 +0000960- Patch #1475845: Raise IndentationError for unexpected indent.

Neal Norwitzc4edb0e2006-05-02 04:43:14 +0000962- Patch #1479181: split open() and file() from being aliases for each other.
963
Tim Peters44bd9862006-06-01 13:49:23 +0000964- Patch #1497053 & bug #1275608: Exceptions occurring in ``__eq__()``
965 methods were always silently ignored by dictionaries when comparing keys.
966 They are now passed through (except when using the C API function
967 ``PyDict_GetItem()``, whose semantics did not change).
968
969- Bug #1456209: In some obscure cases it was possible for a class with a
970 custom ``__eq__()`` method to confuse dict internals when class instances
971 were used as a dict's keys and the ``__eq__()`` method mutated the dict.
972 No, you don't have any code that did this ;-)

987 been renamed to _functools and a functools Python wrapper module added.
988 This provides a home for additional function related utilities that are
989 not specifically about functional programming. See PEP 309.

1002 (up to the system limit of 32K characters).
1003
1004- Use Win32 API to implement os.{access,chdir,chmod,mkdir,remove,rename,rmdir,utime}.
1005 As a result, these functions now raise WindowsError instead of OSError.
1006
Tim Peters7a822da2006-05-25 21:50:17 +00001007- ``time.clock()`` on Win64 should use the high-performance Windows

1009 Windows platforms).
1010
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00001011- Calling Tk_Init twice is refused if the first call failed as that

1015 accept it without potentially using an uninitialized pointer.
1016
1017- bsddb: added support for the DBEnv.log_stat() and DBEnv.lsn_reset() methods

1029 Fixes SF bug 1493322 (pybsddb bug 1184012).
1030
Gregory P. Smithff7d9912006-06-08 05:17:08 +00001031- bsddb: the bsddb.dbtables Modify method now raises the proper error and

1033 Fixes SF python patch/bug #1408584.
1034
Gregory P. Smith506f7b52006-06-15 08:52:32 +00001035- bsddb: multithreaded DB access using the simple bsddb module interface

1069
Tim Peters43898b42006-06-14 04:09:25 +00001070- ``difflib``'s ``SequenceMatcher.get_matching_blocks()`` was changed to
1071 guarantee that adjacent triples in the return list always describe
1072 non-adjacent blocks. Previously, a pair of matching blocks could end
1073 up being described by multiple adjacent triples that formed a partition
1074 of the matching pair.
1075
Greg Ward0e0c9f42006-06-11 16:24:11 +00001076- Bug #1498146: fix optparse to handle Unicode strings in option help,

1085
Nick Coghlan676725d2006-06-08 13:54:49 +00001086- The functions update_wrapper() and wraps() have been added to the functools
1087 module. These make it easier to copy relevant metadata from the original
1088 function when writing wrapper functions.
1089

1091 ``doctest.is_private()`` function, both deprecated in 2.4, were removed.
Tim Petersbf0400a2006-06-05 01:43:03 +00001092
Martin v. Löwis3f767792006-06-04 19:36:28 +00001093- Patch #1359618: Speed up charmap encoder by using a trie structure
1094 for lookup.
1095
Tim Petersd609b1a2006-06-02 23:22:51 +00001096- The functions in the ``pprint`` module now sort dictionaries by key
1097 before computing the display. Before 2.5, ``pprint`` sorted a dictionary
1098 if and only if its display required more than one line, although that
1099 wasn't documented. The new behavior increases predictability; e.g.,
1100 using ``pprint.pprint(a_dict)`` in a doctest is now reliable.
1101
Georg Brandlfd9a4b12006-05-29 20:57:01 +00001102- Patch #1497027: try HTTP digest auth before basic auth in urllib2

1120 tarfiles.
1121
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00001122- Patch #721464: pdb.Pdb instances can now be given explicit stdin and

1178-----------------
1179
Thomas Heller1b046642006-04-18 18:51:06 +00001180- Bug #1465834: 'bdist_wininst preinstall script support' was fixed
1181 by converting these apis from macros into exported functions again:
1182
1183 PyParser_SimpleParseFile PyParser_SimpleParseString PyRun_AnyFile
1184 PyRun_AnyFileEx PyRun_AnyFileFlags PyRun_File PyRun_FileEx
1185 PyRun_FileFlags PyRun_InteractiveLoop PyRun_InteractiveOne

1187 PyRun_String Py_CompileString
1188
Martin v. Löwis45294a92006-04-18 06:24:08 +00001189- Under COUNT_ALLOCS, types are not necessarily immortal anymore.
1190
Martin v. Löwis19ab6c92006-04-16 18:55:50 +00001191- All uses of PyStructSequence_InitType have been changed to initialize
1192 the type objects only once, even if the interpreter is initialized
1193 multiple times.
1194
Neal Norwitz61546162006-04-14 05:20:28 +00001195- Bug #1454485, array.array('u') could crash the interpreter. This was
1196 due to PyArgs_ParseTuple(args, 'u#', ...) trying to convert buffers (strings)
1197 to unicode when it didn't make sense. 'u#' now requires a unicode string.
1198
1199- Py_UNICODE is unsigned. It was always documented as unsigned, but
1200 due to a bug had a signed value in previous versions.
1201
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001202- Patch #837242: ``id()`` of any Python object always gives a positive
1203 number now, which might be a long integer. ``PyLong_FromVoidPtr`` and
1204 ``PyLong_AsVoidPtr`` have been changed accordingly. Note that it has
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001205 never been correct to implement a ``__hash()__`` method that returns the
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001206 ``id()`` of an object:
Martin v. Löwis0bc2ab92006-04-10 20:28:17 +00001207
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001208 def __hash__(self):
1209 return id(self) # WRONG
1210
1211 because a hash result must be a (short) Python int but it was always
1212 possible for ``id()`` to return a Python long. However, because ``id()``
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001213 could return negative values before, on a 32-bit box an ``id()`` result
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001214 was always usable as a hash value before this patch. That's no longer
1215 necessarily so.
1216
1217- Python on OS X 10.3 and above now uses dlopen() (via dynload_shlib.c)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001218 to load extension modules and now provides the dl module. As a result,
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001219 sys.setdlopenflags() now works correctly on these systems. (SF patch
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001220 #1454844)
1221
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001222- Patch #1463867: enhanced garbage collection to allow cleanup of cycles
1223 involving generators that have paused outside of any ``try`` or ``with``
1224 blocks. (In 2.5a1, a paused generator that was part of a reference
1225 cycle could not be garbage collected, regardless of whether it was
1226 paused in a ``try`` or ``with`` block.)

1341
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001342- The test_contextlib test in 2.5a1 wasn't actually run unless you ran
1343 it separately and by hand. It also wasn't cleaning up its changes to
1344 the current Decimal context.
1345
Thomas Woutersabd08882006-04-26 15:53:30 +00001346- regrtest.py now has a -M option to run tests that test the new limits of
1347 containers, on 64-bit architectures. Running these tests is only sensible
1348 on 64-bit machines with more than two gigabytes of memory. The argument
1349 passed is the maximum amount of memory for the tests to use.

Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00001375Core and builtins
1376-----------------
1377
Nick Coghlan43832302006-04-23 17:04:07 +00001378- PEP 338: -m command line switch now delegates to runpy.run_module
1379 allowing it to support modules in packages and zipfiles
1380
Martin v. Löwisc661b882006-04-20 04:54:23 +00001381- On Windows, .DLL is not an accepted file name extension for
1382 extension modules anymore; extensions are only found if they
1383 end in .PYD.
1384
Martin v. Löwisea62d252006-04-03 10:56:49 +00001385- Bug #1421664: sys.stderr.encoding is now set to the same value as
1386 sys.stdout.encoding.
1387
Neal Norwitz92e212f2006-04-03 04:48:37 +00001388- __import__ accepts keyword arguments.
1389
Georg Brandlccadf842006-03-31 18:54:53 +00001390- Patch #1460496: round() now accepts keyword arguments.
1391
Anthony Baxter262c00a2006-03-30 10:53:17 +00001392- Fixed bug #1459029 - unicode reprs were double-escaped.
1393
Hye-Shik Changd478f342006-03-23 12:32:36 +00001394- Patch #1396919: The system scope threads are reenabled on FreeBSD
1395 5.4 and later versions.
1396
Neal Norwitze98ccf62006-03-23 05:39:47 +00001397- Bug #1115379: Compiling a Unicode string with an encoding declaration
1398 now gives a SyntaxError.
1399
Georg Brandlabd1ff82006-03-18 07:59:59 +00001400- Previously, Python code had no easy way to access the contents of a
1401 cell object. Now, a ``cell_contents`` attribute has been added
1402 (closes patch #1170323).
1403
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001404- Patch #1123430: Python's small-object allocator now returns an arena to
1405 the system ``free()`` when all memory within an arena becomes unused
1406 again. Prior to Python 2.5, arenas (256KB chunks of memory) were never
1407 freed. Some applications will see a drop in virtual memory size now,
1408 especially long-running applications that, from time to time, temporarily
1409 use a large number of small objects. Note that when Python returns an
1410 arena to the platform C's ``free()``, there's no guarantee that the
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001411 platform C library will in turn return that memory to the operating system.
1412 The effect of the patch is to stop making that impossible, and in tests it
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001413 appears to be effective at least on Microsoft C and gcc-based systems.
1414 Thanks to Evan Jones for hard work and patience.
1415
Georg Brandl533ff6f2006-03-08 18:09:27 +00001416- Patch #1434038: property() now uses the getter's docstring if there is
1417 no "doc" argument given. This makes it possible to legitimately use
1418 property() as a decorator to produce a read-only property.
1419
Guido van Rossum9aa37ab2006-03-07 18:54:08 +00001420- PEP 357, patch 1436368: add an __index__ method to int/long and a matching
1421 nb_index slot to the PyNumberMethods struct. The slot is consulted instead
1422 of requiring an int or long in slicing and a few other contexts, enabling
1423 other objects (e.g. Numeric Python's integers) to be used as slice indices.
1424
Neal Norwitz995acdf2006-03-07 05:01:00 +00001425- Fixed various bugs reported by Coverity's Prevent tool.
1426
Brett Cannonbf364092006-03-01 04:25:17 +00001427- PEP 352, patch #1104669: Make exceptions new-style objects. Introduced the
1428 new exception base class, BaseException, which has a new message attribute.
1429 KeyboardInterrupt and SystemExit to directly inherit from BaseException now.
1430 Raising a string exception now raises a DeprecationWarning.
1431
Thomas Woutersfb609f42006-02-28 16:37:25 +00001432- Patch #1438387, PEP 328: relative and absolute imports. Imports can now be
1433 explicitly relative, using 'from .module import name' to mean 'from the same
1434 package as this module is in. Imports without dots still default to the
1435 old relative-then-absolute, unless 'from __future__ import
1436 absolute_import' is used.
1437
Brett Cannona7446e32006-02-27 23:39:10 +00001438- Properly check if 'warnings' raises an exception (usually when a filter set
1439 to "error" is triggered) when raising a warning for raising string
1440 exceptions.
1441
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001442- CO_GENERATOR_ALLOWED is no longer defined. This behavior is the default.
Neal Norwitz0023a2f2006-02-27 23:24:48 +00001443 The name was removed from Include/code.h.
1444
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001445- PEP 308: conditional expressions were added: (x if cond else y).
Neal Norwitzeb651252006-02-27 16:47:12 +00001446
Guido van Rossum1968ad32006-02-25 22:38:04 +00001447- Patch 1433928:
1448 - The copy module now "copies" function objects (as atomic objects).
1449 - dict.__getitem__ now looks for a __missing__ hook before raising
1450 KeyError.
1451
Tim Peters84ef21c2006-02-28 20:39:06 +00001452- PEP 343: with statement implemented. Needs ``from __future__ import
1453 with_statement``. Use of 'with' as a variable will generate a warning.
1454 Use of 'as' as a variable will also generate a warning (unless it's
Neal Norwitz055ec242006-02-28 20:06:49 +00001455 part of an import statement).
Guido van Rossum1a5e21e2006-02-28 21:57:43 +00001456 The following objects have __context__ methods:
1457 - The built-in file type.
1458 - The thread.LockType type.
1459 - The following types defined by the threading module:
1460 Lock, RLock, Condition, Semaphore, BoundedSemaphore.
1461 - The decimal.Context class.
Guido van Rossumc2e20742006-02-27 22:32:47 +00001462
Marc-André Lemburgfe4b34c2006-02-19 15:22:22 +00001463- Fix the encodings package codec search function to only search
1464 inside its own package. Fixes problem reported in patch #1433198.
1465
1466 Note: Codec packages should implement and register their own
1467 codec search function. PEP 100 has the details.
1468
Tim Peters9ea89d22006-06-04 03:26:02 +00001469- PEP 353: Using ``Py_ssize_t`` as the index type.
1470
1471- ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` builds now add ``4*sizeof(size_t)`` bytes of debugging
1472 info to each allocated block, since the ``Py_ssize_t`` changes (PEP 353)
1473 now allow Python to make use of memory blocks exceeding 2**32 bytes for
1474 some purposes on 64-bit boxes. A ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` build was limited
1475 to 4-byte allocations before.
Martin v. Löwis18e16552006-02-15 17:27:45 +00001476
Neal Norwitzfc76d632006-01-10 06:03:13 +00001477- Patch #1400181, fix unicode string formatting to not use the locale.
1478 This is how string objects work. u'%f' could use , instead of .
1479 for the decimal point. Now both strings and unicode always use periods.
1480
Neal Norwitz671b9e32006-01-09 07:07:12 +00001481- Bug #1244610, #1392915, fix build problem on OpenBSD 3.7 and 3.8.
1482 configure would break checking curses.h.
1483
Georg Brandlcd4d1e82005-12-27 17:37:07 +00001484- Bug #959576: The pwd module is now builtin. This allows Python to be
1485 built on UNIX platforms without $HOME set.
1486
Neal Norwitzc10978f2005-12-19 06:07:16 +00001487- Bug #1072182, fix some potential problems if characters are signed.
1488
Neal Norwitz5d0ad502005-12-19 04:27:42 +00001489- Bug #889500, fix line number on SyntaxWarning for global declarations.
1490
Neal Norwitzdb83eb32005-12-18 05:29:30 +00001491- Bug #1378022, UTF-8 files with a leading BOM crashed the interpreter.
1492
Neal Norwitze7214a12005-12-18 05:03:17 +00001493- Support for converting hex strings to floats no longer works.
1494 This was not portable. float('0x3') now raises a ValueError.
1495
Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001496- Patch #1382163: Expose Subversion revision number to Python. New C API

Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001498 is now displayed in interactive prompt banner.
1499
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00001500- Implementation of PEP 341 - Unification of try/except and try/finally.
1501 "except" clauses can now be written together with a "finally" clause in
Neal Norwitz11ca77e2005-12-17 22:24:12 +00001502 one try statement instead of two nested ones. Patch #1355913.
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00001503
Hye-Shik Chang835b2432005-12-17 04:38:31 +00001504- Bug #1379994: Builtin unicode_escape and raw_unicode_escape codec

Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001513 It was possible for dlerror() to return a NULL pointer, so
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001514 it will now use a default error message in this case.
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001515
Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00001516- Replaced most Unicode charmap codecs with new ones using the
1517 new Unicode translate string feature in the builtin charmap
1518 codec; the codecs were created from the mapping tables available
1519 at ftp.unicode.org and contain a few updates (e.g. the Mac OS
1520 encodings now include a mapping for the Apple logo)
1521
Tim Peterse3547fd2005-12-16 23:13:57 +00001522- Added a few more codecs for Mac OS encodings

1541
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001542- All iterators now have a Boolean value of True. Formerly, some iterators
Raymond Hettinger6b27cda2005-09-24 21:23:05 +00001543 supported a __len__() method which evaluated to False when the iterator
1544 was empty.
1545
Guido van Rossum630db602005-09-20 18:49:54 +00001546- On 64-bit platforms, when __len__() returns a value that cannot be
1547 represented as a C int, raise OverflowError.
1548
Skip Montanarof8948ca2005-09-19 03:54:46 +00001549- test__locale is skipped on OS X < 10.4 (only partial locale support is

1566
Barry Warsawe2eca0b2005-08-15 18:14:19 +00001567- SF bug #900092: When tracing (e.g. for hotshot), restore 'return' events for
1568 exceptions that cause a function to exit.
1569
Raymond Hettinger9f1a6792005-07-31 01:16:36 +00001570- The implementation of set() and frozenset() was revised to use its
1571 own internal data structure. Memory consumption is reduced by 1/3
1572 and there are modest speed-ups as well. The API is unchanged.
1573
Tim Petersde7990b2005-07-17 23:45:23 +00001574- SF bug #1238681: freed pointer is used in longobject.c:long_pow().
1575
Michael W. Hudson0edc7a02005-07-12 10:21:19 +00001576- SF bug #1229429: PyObject_CallMethod failed to decrement some

1578
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001579- SF bug #1185883: Python's small-object memory allocator took over
1580 a block managed by the platform C library whenever a realloc specified
1581 a small new size. However, there's no portable way to know then how
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001582 much of the address space following the pointer is valid, so there's no
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001583 portable way to copy data from the C-managed block into Python's
1584 small-object space without risking a memory fault. Python's small-object
1585 realloc now leaves such blocks under the control of the platform C
1586 realloc.
1587
Michael W. Hudsonb8963812005-07-05 15:21:58 +00001588- SF bug #1232517: An overflow error was not detected properly when

1590
Raymond Hettinger3296e692005-06-29 23:29:56 +00001591- SF bug #1224347: hex longs now print with lowercase letters just
1592 like their int counterparts.
1593
Michael W. Hudson188d4362005-06-20 16:52:57 +00001594- SF bug #1163563: the original fix for bug #1010677 ("thread Module
1595 Breaks PyGILState_Ensure()") broke badly in the case of multiple
1596 interpreter states; back out that fix and do a better job (see
1597 http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-dev/2005-June/054258.html

1599
Michael W. Hudsondf888462005-06-03 14:41:55 +00001600- SF patch #1180995: marshal now uses a binary format by default when
1601 serializing floats.
1602
Michael W. Hudsonda85a902005-06-01 11:34:22 +00001603- SF patch #1181301: on platforms that appear to use IEEE 754 floats,
1604 the routines that promise to produce IEEE 754 binary representations
1605 of floats now simply copy bytes around.
1606
Skip Montanarobbf12ba2005-05-20 03:07:06 +00001607- bug #967182: disallow opening files with 'wU' or 'aU' as specified by PEP
1608 278.
1609
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001610- patch #1109424: int, long, float, complex, and unicode now check for the
1611 proper magic slot for type conversions when subclassed. Previously the
1612 magic slot was ignored during conversion. Semantics now match the way
1613 subclasses of str always behaved. int/long/float, conversion of an instance
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00001614 to the base class has been moved to the proper nb_* magic slot and out of
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001615 PyNumber_*().
Neal Norwitzcfba5f82006-04-25 05:05:03 +00001616 Thanks Walter Drwald.
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001617
Barry Warsawc8d907c2005-04-19 23:43:40 +00001618- Descriptors defined in C with a PyGetSetDef structure, where the setter is
1619 NULL, now raise an AttributeError when attempting to set or delete the
1620 attribute. Previously a TypeError was raised, but this was inconsistent
1621 with the equivalent pure-Python implementation.
1622
Michael W. Hudson774479c2005-04-18 08:46:17 +00001623- It is now safe to call PyGILState_Release() before
1624 PyEval_InitThreads() (note that if there is reason to believe there
1625 are multiple threads around you still must call PyEval_InitThreads()
1626 before using the Python API; this fix is for extension modules that
1627 have no way of knowing if Python is multi-threaded yet).
1628
Michael W. Hudsone3afc592005-04-07 10:11:19 +00001629- Typing Ctrl-C whilst raw_input() was waiting in a build with threads
1630 disabled caused a crash.
1631
Michael W. Hudsonb330adf2005-03-31 09:35:44 +00001632- Bug #1165306: instancemethod_new allowed the creation of a method
1633 with im_class == im_self == NULL, which caused a crash when called.
1634
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001635- Move exception finalisation later in the shutdown process - this
Anthony Baxter12b6f6c2005-03-29 13:36:16 +00001636 fixes the crash seen in bug #1165761
1637
Raymond Hettinger96229b12005-03-11 06:49:40 +00001638- Added two new builtins, any() and all().
1639
Brett Cannon409d8f22005-03-05 06:47:57 +00001640- Defining a class with empty parentheses is now allowed
Brett Cannonf4189912005-04-09 02:30:16 +00001641 (e.g., ``class C(): pass`` is no longer a syntax error).
1642 Patch #1176012 added support to the 'parser' module and 'compiler' package
1643 (thanks to logistix for that added support).

1657
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001658- Bug #1074011: closing sys.std{out,err} now causes a flush() and
Martin v. Löwis8e3ca8a2005-01-23 09:41:49 +00001659 an ferror() call.
1660
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00001661- min() and max() now support key= arguments with the same meaning as in

1665 (2+3) --> (5).
1666
Raymond Hettingera422c342005-01-11 03:03:27 +00001667- set and frozenset objects can now be marshalled. SF #1098985.
1668
Michael W. Hudsonfaa76482005-01-31 17:09:25 +00001669- Bug #1077106: Poor argument checking could cause memory corruption

Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00001671
Jeremy Hyltonab630502005-02-04 18:44:06 +00001672- The parser did not complain about future statements in illegal
1673 positions. It once again reports a syntax error if a future
1674 statement occurs after anything other than a doc string.
1675
Neil Schemenauercf52c072005-08-12 17:34:58 +00001676- Change the %s format specifier for str objects so that it returns a
1677 unicode instance if the argument is not an instance of basestring and
1678 calling __str__ on the argument returns a unicode instance.
1679
Tim Petersf4e69282006-02-27 17:15:31 +00001680- Patch #1413181: changed ``PyThreadState_Delete()`` to forget about the
1681 current thread state when the auto-GIL-state machinery knows about
1682 it (since the thread state is being deleted, continuing to remember it
1683 can't help, but can hurt if another thread happens to get created with
1684 the same thread id).

Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001896 later to build this - if you have an earlier version, the C extension
Anthony Baxterc51ee692006-04-01 00:57:31 +00001897 module will not be built.

1924 package that was included in Python 2.3, except that PEP 8 module names are
1925 now used (e.g. mail.message instead of email.Message). The MIME classes
1926 have been moved to a subpackage (e.g. email.mime.text instead of
1927 email.MIMEText). The old names are still supported for now. Several
1928 deprecated Message methods have been removed and lots of bugs have been
1929 fixed. More details can be found in the email package documentation.

2203
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002204- Enhancements to the csv module:
2205
2206 + Dialects are now validated by the underlying C code, better
Georg Brandl7eb4b7d2005-07-22 21:49:32 +00002207 reflecting its capabilities, and improving its compliance with
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002208 PEP 305.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002209 + Dialect parameter parsing has been re-implemented to improve error
2210 reporting.
2211 + quotechar=None and quoting=QUOTE_NONE now work the way PEP 305
2212 dictates.
2213 + the parser now removes the escapechar prefix from escaped characters.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002214 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the writer now tests for numeric
Andrew M. Kuchling6db67822006-04-18 14:04:57 +00002215 types, rather than any object that can be represented as a numeric.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002216 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the reader now casts unquoted fields
2217 to floats.
Andrew McNamaraf69d94f2005-01-13 11:30:54 +00002218 + reader now allows \r characters to be quoted (previously it only allowed
2219 \n to be quoted).
Andrew McNamarac89f2842005-01-12 07:44:42 +00002220 + writer doublequote handling improved.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002221 + Dialect classes passed to the module are no longer instantiated by
2222 the module before being parsed (the former validation scheme required
2223 this, but the mechanism was unreliable).
2224 + The dialect registry now contains instances of the internal
2225 C-coded dialect type, rather than references to python objects.
2226 + the internal c-coded dialect type is now immutable.
2227 + register_dialect now accepts the same keyword dialect specifications
2228 as the reader and writer, allowing the user to register dialects
2229 without first creating a dialect class.
2230 + a configurable limit to the size of parsed fields has been added -
2231 previously, an unmatched quote character could result in the entire
2232 file being read into the field buffer before an error was reported.
Andrew McNamara31d88962005-01-12 03:45:10 +00002233 + A new module method csv.field_size_limit() has been added that sets
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002234 the parser field size limit (returning the former limit). The initial
2235 limit is 128kB.
Andrew McNamara7f2053e2005-01-12 11:17:16 +00002236 + A line_num attribute has been added to the reader object, which tracks
2237 the number of lines read from the source iterator. This is not
2238 the same as the number of records returned, as records can span
2239 multiple lines.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002240 + reader and writer objects were not being registered with the cyclic-GC.
2241 This has been fixed.
2242
Brett Cannone6539c42005-01-08 02:43:53 +00002243- _DummyThread objects in the threading module now delete self.__block that is
2244 inherited from _Thread since it uses up a lock allocated by 'thread'. The
2245 lock primitives tend to be limited in number and thus should not be wasted on
2246 a _DummyThread object. Fixes bug #1089632.
2247
Raymond Hettinger97db05d2005-01-07 08:15:41 +00002248- The imghdr module now detects Exif files.
2249

2251 (Bug #951915).
2252
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002253- locale.py now uses an updated locale alias table (built using
2254 Tools/i18n/makelocalealias.py, a tool to parse the X11 locale
2255 alias file); the encoding lookup was enhanced to use Python's
Andrew M. Kuchling88b85822005-08-23 00:57:07 +00002256 encoding alias table.
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002257
Raymond Hettinger3557f422004-12-07 12:02:02 +00002258- moved deprecated modules to Lib/lib-old: whrandom, tzparse, statcache.
2259
Raymond Hettingera6b45cc2004-12-07 07:05:57 +00002260- the pickle module no longer accepts the deprecated None option in the
2261 args tuple returned by __reduce__().
2262
Brett Cannon84667c02004-12-07 03:25:18 +00002263- optparse now optionally imports gettext. This allows its use in setup.py.

2270
Raymond Hettingerf3fa9462004-12-05 01:58:09 +00002271- the filecmp module no longer uses the deprecated use_statcache argument.
2272
Raymond Hettinger664347b2004-12-04 21:21:53 +00002273- unittest.TestCase.run() and unittest.TestSuite.run() can now be successfully
2274 extended or overridden by subclasses. Formerly, the subclassed method would
2275 be ignored by the rest of the module. (Bug #1078905).
2276
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002277- heapq.nsmallest() and heapq.nlargest() now support key= arguments with
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00002278 the same meaning as in list.sort().
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002279
Walter Dörwald36733692004-12-22 12:50:50 +00002280- Bug #1076985: ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` now calls ``read()`` only
2281 once when a size argument is given. This prevents a buffer overflow in the
2282 tokenizer with very long source lines.
2283
Barry Warsaw538561e2006-01-01 21:48:54 +00002284- Bug #1083110: ``zlib.decompress.flush()`` would segfault if called
2285 immediately after creating the object, without any intervening
2286 ``.decompress()`` calls.
Andrew M. Kuchling3b585b32004-12-28 20:10:48 +00002287
Skip Montanaro05885812005-01-16 20:48:27 +00002288- The reconvert.quote function can now emit triple-quoted strings. The
2289 reconvert module now has some simple documentation.
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002290
Walter Dörwaldaf3b39a2005-02-18 13:22:43 +00002291- ``UserString.MutableString`` now supports negative indices in
2292 ``__setitem__`` and ``__delitem__``
2293
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00002294- Bug #1149508: ``textwrap`` now handles hyphenated numbers (eg. "2004-03-05")

Walter Dörwaldbc8e6422005-04-21 21:32:03 +00002297- Partial fixes for SF bugs #1163244 and #1175396: If a chunk read by
2298 ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` has a trailing "\r", read one more
2299 character even if the user has passed a size parameter to get a proper
2300 line ending. Remove the special handling of a "\r\n" that has been split
2301 between two lines.
2302
Walter Dörwalda47d1c02005-08-30 10:23:14 +00002303- Bug #1251300: On UCS-4 builds the "unicode-internal" codec will now complain
2304 about illegal code points. The codec now supports PEP 293 style error
2305 handlers.
2306
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00002307- Bug #1235646: ``codecs.StreamRecoder.next()`` now reencodes the data it reads
Walter Dörwaldc5238b82005-09-01 11:56:53 +00002308 from the input stream, so that the output is a byte string in the correct
2309 encoding instead of a unicode string.

2321
Walter Dörwald58917a62006-03-31 15:26:22 +00002322- Bug #947906: An object oriented interface has been added to the calendar
2323 module. It's possible to generate HTML calendar now and the module can be
Walter Dörwald48d5e502006-04-01 07:57:00 +00002324 called as a script (e.g. via ``python -mcalendar``). Localized month and
2325 weekday names can be ouput (even if an exotic encoding is used) using
2326 special classes that use unicode.

Brett Cannon46d96232005-02-16 00:07:19 +00002364- spwdmodule.c is built only if either HAVE_GETSPNAM or HAVE_HAVE_GETSPENT is
2365 defined. Discovered as a result of not being able to build on OS X.
2366
Brett Cannon516592f2004-12-07 00:42:59 +00002367- setup.py now uses the directories specified in LDFLAGS using the -L option
2368 and in CPPFLAGS using the -I option for adding library and include
2369 directories, respectively, for compiling extension modules against. This has
2370 led to the core being compiled using the values in CPPFLAGS. It also removes
2371 the need for the special-casing of both DarwinPorts and Fink for darwin since
2372 the proper directories can be specified in LDFLAGS (``-L/sw/lib`` for Fink,
2373 ``-L/opt/local/lib`` for DarwinPorts) and CPPFLAGS (``-I/sw/include`` for
2374 Fink, ``-I/opt/local/include`` for DarwinPorts).

Brett Cannon43802422005-02-10 20:48:03 +00002376- Test in configure.in that checks for tzset no longer dependent on tm->tm_zone
2377 to exist in the struct (not required by either ISO C nor the UNIX 2 spec).
2378 Tests for sanity in tzname when HAVE_TZNAME defined were also defined.
2379 Closes bug #1096244. Thanks Gregory Bond.

2382-----
2383
Tim Petersc9d78aa2006-03-26 23:27:58 +00002384- ``PyMem_{Del, DEL}`` and ``PyMem_{Free, FREE}`` no longer map to
2385 ``PyObject_{Free, FREE}``. They map to the system ``free()`` now. If memory
2386 is obtained via the ``PyObject_`` family, it must be released via the
2387 ``PyObject_`` family, and likewise for the ``PyMem_`` family. This has
2388 always been officially true, but when Python's small-object allocator was
2389 introduced, an attempt was made to cater to a few extension modules
2390 discovered at the time that obtained memory via ``PyObject_New`` but
2391 released it via ``PyMem_DEL``. It's years later, and if such code still
2392 exists it will fail now (probably with segfaults, but calling wrong
2393 low-level memory management functions can yield many symptoms).
2394
