12Core and Builtins
13-----------------
14
Antoine Pitrou73c0e652008-12-17 22:46:54 +000015- Issue #2467: gc.DEBUG_STATS reported invalid elapsed times. Also, always
16 print elapsed times, not only when some objects are uncollectable /
17 unreachable. Original patch by Neil Schemenauer.

28 exceptions.
29
Mark Dickinson826f3fe2008-12-05 21:55:28 +000030- Issue #4445: Replace "sizeof(PyStringObject)" with
31 "offsetof(PyStringObject, ob_sval) + 1" when allocating memory for
32 str instances. On a typical machine this saves 3 bytes of memory
33 (on average) per string allocation.
34
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcdc619012008-11-22 20:01:18 +000035- Issue #3996: On Windows, the PyOS_CheckStack function would cause the
36 interpreter to abort ("Fatal Python error: Could not reset the stack!")
37 instead of throwing a MemoryError.

44
Vinay Sajip213faca2008-12-03 23:22:58 +000045- Issue #4233: Changed semantic of ``_fileio.FileIO``'s ``close()``
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc32265652008-11-20 23:34:31 +000046 method on file objects with closefd=False. The file descriptor is still
47 kept open but the file object behaves like a closed file. The ``FileIO``
48 object also got a new readonly attribute ``closefd``.
49
Benjamin Peterson46cc6d12008-11-19 21:49:09 +000050- Issue #4348: Some bytearray methods returned that didn't cause any change to
51 the bytearray, returned the same bytearray instead of a copy.
52
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc7cfe7ea2008-11-18 22:19:37 +000053- Issue #4317: Fixed a crash in the imageop.rgb2rgb8() function.

63 method does not return iterators for the 4th and 5th items.
64
Benjamin Petersonbdca9422008-10-26 20:21:13 +000065- Issue #4209: Enabling unicode_literals and the print_function in the same
66 __future__ import didn't work.
67
Benjamin Peterson399b1fe2008-10-25 02:53:28 +000068- Using ``nonlocal`` as a variable name will now raise a Py3k SyntaxWarning
Georg Brandl7fb00ad2008-10-25 07:00:52 +000069 because it is a reserved word in 3.x.
Benjamin Peterson399b1fe2008-10-25 02:53:28 +000070
Hirokazu Yamamoto10a018c2008-10-09 10:00:30 +000071- On windows, os.chdir given unicode was not working if GetCurrentDirectoryW
72 returned a path longer than MAX_PATH. (But It's doubtful this code path is
73 really executed because I cannot move to such directory on win2k)
74
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd78b9dc2008-10-07 20:32:10 +000075- Issue #4069: When set.remove(element) is used with a set element, the element
76 is temporarily replaced with an equivalent frozenset. But the eventual
77 KeyError would always report the empty frozenset([]) as the missing key. Now
78 it correctly refers to the initial element.
79
Antoine Pitrouae5bece2008-12-06 21:29:24 +000080- Issue #4509: Various issues surrounding resize of bytearray objects to
81 which there are buffer exports.

98 zipimport (or any other conformant PEP 302 loader). Original patch by
99 Alexander Belopolsky.
100
101- Issue #4197: doctests in modules loaded via zipimport (or any other PEP
102 302 conformant loader) will now work correctly in most cases (they
103 are still subject to the constraints that exist for all code running
104 from inside a module loaded via a PEP 302 loader and attempting to
105 perform IO operations based on __file__). Original patch by
106 Alexander Belopolsky.
107
108- Issues #4082 and #4512: Add runpy support to zipimport in a manner that

141 captureWarnings(). This change includes a NullHandler which does nothing;

Martin v. Löwis9fa5a282008-09-11 06:53:30 +0000301- Issue #3642: Suppress warning in obmalloc when size_t is larger than uint.
302
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +0000303- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
304 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
305 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
306 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
307 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
308 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
309 64bit values.
310
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +0000311- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on

313
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd3ffb892008-09-09 07:24:30 +0000314- Issue #3777: long() applied to a float object now always return a long
315 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
316 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
317 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
318
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +0000319- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000473
474Core and Builtins
475-----------------
476
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000477- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
478 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
479 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
480 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
481 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
482 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
483 default.
484
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000485- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
486 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
487
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000488- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
489 value again.
490
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000491- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
492 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
493 and introducing s*.
494
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000495- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
496 object was stored in the freelist.
497
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000498- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
499 ValueError consistently across platforms.
500
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000501- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
502 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
503 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
504
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000505- Apply security patches from Apple.
506
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000507- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
508 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
509
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000510- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
511 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
512
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000513- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
514 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
515 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
516
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000517- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
518 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
519 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
520 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
521 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
522 failed have been fixed.
523
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000524Library
525-------
526
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000527- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
528
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000529- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
530 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
531
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000532- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
533 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
534 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
535
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000536- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
537 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
538 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
539 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
540 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
541 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
542
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000543- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
544 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
545
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000546- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
547
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000548- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
549
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000550- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
551
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000552- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
553 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
554
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000555- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
556 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
557
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000558- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
559 in a redirect.
560
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000561- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +0000562 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000563
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +0000564- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
565 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
566
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000567- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
568 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
569 regular expression.
570
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000571- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
572 thread-safe.
573
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +0000574- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
575 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
576 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
577
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +0000578- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
579
Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +0000580- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
581 menu entries were not deleted.
582
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +0000583- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
584 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
585
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000586- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
587 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
588
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000589- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
590 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
591 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
592
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +0000593- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
594 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
595 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
596
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +0000597- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
598 the reload() built-in has been removed.
599
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000600- Changed code in the following modules/packages to remove warnings raised
Brett Cannonc1b76e42008-08-09 23:06:16 +0000601 while running under the ``-3`` flag: aifc, asynchat, asyncore, bdb, bsddb,

606 threading, tokenize, traceback, urlparse, wsgiref, xml, xmlrpclib.
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000607
Lars Gustäbel727bd0b2008-08-02 11:26:39 +0000608- Issue #3039: Fix tarfile.TarFileCompat.writestr() which always
609 raised an AttributeError.
610
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000611- Issue #2523: Fix quadratic behaviour when read()ing a binary file without
Antoine Pitroude781a42008-08-09 12:43:23 +0000612 asking for a specific length. This problem only affected files opened
613 using the new "io" module, not the built-in open() function.
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000614
Mark Dickinsonfe84cce2008-07-27 06:39:07 +0000615- Issue #3449: Update decimal module to use most recent specification

670
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000671- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
672 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
673 an integer using operator.index().
674
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000675- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which

677
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000678- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
679 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
680
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000681- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
682 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
683 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
684
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000685- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
686 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
687 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
688 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
689 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
690 level.
691
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000692- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
693 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
694 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
695 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
696 all imports from that module to fail.
697
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000698- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly

705
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000706- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from

708 another thread's dictionary.
709
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000710- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
711 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
712 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
713 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
714 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
715 10, -1).
716
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000717- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
718 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
719 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000757- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
758 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000759 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000760 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001231- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
1232 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
1233 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
1234 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
1235 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
1236 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
1237 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
1238 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001301- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1302 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1303 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1304 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1305 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1306 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1307 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1308 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1309 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1310 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1311 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1312 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1313 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1314 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1315 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1316 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1317 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1318 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1319 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1320 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1321
1322 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1323 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1324 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1325 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1326 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1327 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1328 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1329 access to the underlying socket used.
1330
1331 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1332 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1333 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001334
1335 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001336 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,

1338 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
1339
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001340 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
1341 suite to run in parallel without issue.

1630 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1631 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1632 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1633 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
