675
676- Fix concatenation (+=) of long strings.
677
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000678- Unicode objects will no longer raise an exception when being
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000679 compared equal or unequal to a string and a UnicodeDecodeError
680 exception occurs, e.g. as result of a decoding failure.
Neal Norwitz56423e52006-08-13 18:11:08 +0000681
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000682 Instead, the equal (==) and unequal (!=) comparison operators will
683 now issue a UnicodeWarning and interpret the two objects as
684 unequal. The UnicodeWarning can be filtered as desired using
685 the warning framework, e.g. silenced completely, turned into an
686 exception, logged, etc.
687
688 Note that compare operators other than equal and unequal will still
689 raise UnicodeDecodeError exceptions as they've always done.
Neal Norwitz8a87f5d2006-08-12 17:03:09 +0000690
Marc-André Lemburg757ea272006-08-14 11:44:34 +0000691- Fix segfault when doing string formatting on subclasses of long.

695
696- Fix bug related to __len__ functions returning negative values with
697 classic classes.
698
699- Patch #1538606, Fix __index__() clipping. There were some problems
700 discovered with the API and how integers that didn't fit into Py_ssize_t
701 were handled. This patch attempts to provide enough alternatives
702 to effectively use __index__.
703
Martin v. Löwisab2f8f72006-08-09 07:57:39 +0000704- Bug #1536021: __hash__ may now return long int; the final hash

710 sys.stdin is closed.
711
Thomas Heller74d36f02006-08-04 18:17:40 +0000712- On Windows, the PyErr_Warn function is now exported from
713 the Python dll again.
714
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000715- Bug #1191458: tracing over for loops now produces a line event
716 on each iteration. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc
717 magic number. This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5c1
718 will be regenerated.
719
Neal Norwitz0cbd8052006-08-04 05:09:28 +0000720- Bug #1333982: string/number constants were inappropriately stored
721 in the byte code and co_consts even if they were not used, ie
722 immediately popped off the stack.

732
Marc-André Lemburg574cfea2006-08-16 16:11:01 +0000733- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0. The change to

849 This provides the proper warning for struct.pack().
850 PyErr_Warn() is now deprecated in favor of PyErr_WarnEx().
851
Neal Norwitz0d62a062006-07-30 06:53:31 +0000852- Patch #1531113: Fix augmented assignment with yield expressions.
853 Also fix a SystemError when trying to assign to yield expressions.
854
Phillip J. Ebyf7575d02006-07-28 21:12:07 +0000855- Bug #1529871: The speed enhancement patch #921466 broke Python's compliance
856 with PEP 302. This was fixed by adding an ``imp.NullImporter`` type that is
857 used in ``sys.path_importer_cache`` to cache non-directory paths and avoid
858 excessive filesystem operations during imports.
859
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +0000860- Bug #1521947: When checking for overflow, ``PyOS_strtol()`` used some
861 operations on signed longs that are formally undefined by C.
862 Unfortunately, at least one compiler now cares about that, so complicated
863 the code to make that compiler happy again.

Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000881 again. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc magic number.
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000882 This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5b3 will be regenerated.

Martin v. Löwis961b91b2006-08-02 13:53:55 +0000895- Correction of patch #1455898: In the mbcs decoder, set final=False
896 for stream decoder, but final=True for the decode function.
897
Georg Brandl07fec3a2006-08-01 18:49:24 +0000898- os.urandom no longer masks unrelated exceptions like SystemExit or
899 KeyboardInterrupt.
900
Tim Peters4643c2f2006-08-10 22:45:34 +0000901- Bug #1525866: Don't copy directory stat times in
Martin v. Löwis4e678382006-07-30 13:00:31 +0000902 shutil.copytree on Windows
903
Georg Brandle34ac7c2006-07-30 11:07:23 +0000904- Bug #1002398: The documentation for os.path.sameopenfile now correctly
905 refers to file descriptors, not file objects.
906
Tim Peterscbdd3502006-09-05 01:47:53 +0000907- The renaming of the xml package to xmlcore, and the import hackery done
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000908 to make it appear at both names, has been removed. Bug #1511497,
Fred Drakefbdeaad2006-07-29 16:56:15 +0000909 #1513611, and probably others.
910
Georg Brandledd9b0d2006-07-29 09:33:26 +0000911- Bug #1441397: The compiler module now recognizes module and function
912 docstrings correctly as it did in Python 2.4.
913
Tim Peters6f681472006-07-27 23:44:37 +0000914- Bug #1529297: The rewrite of doctest for Python 2.4 unintentionally
915 lost that tests are sorted by name before being run. This rarely
916 matters for well-written tests, but can create baffling symptoms if
917 side effects from one test to the next affect outcomes. ``DocTestFinder``
918 has been changed to sort the list of tests it returns.
919
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000920- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0, and is now kept
Martin v. Löwis1f30c372006-07-30 13:14:05 +0000921 in sync with sys.version_info[:3].
Martin v. Löwis997ceff2006-07-27 06:38:16 +0000922
Martin v. Löwis9298eff2006-07-26 12:12:56 +0000923- Bug #978833: Really close underlying socket in _socketobject.close.
924
Georg Brandldb232dc2006-08-20 13:15:43 +0000925- Bug #1459963: urllib and urllib2 now normalize HTTP header names with
926 title().
Georg Brandl0619a322006-07-26 07:40:17 +0000927
Georg Brandlcf0c1722006-07-26 07:23:32 +0000928- Patch #1525766: In pkgutil.walk_packages, correctly pass the onerror callback
929 to recursive calls and call it with the failing package name.
930
Martin v. Löwis0b483032006-07-25 09:53:12 +0000931- Bug #1525817: Don't truncate short lines in IDLE's tool tips.
932
Georg Brandlc13c34c2006-07-24 14:09:56 +0000933- Patch #1515343: Fix printing of deprecated string exceptions with a
934 value in the traceback module.
935
Greg Ward48fae7a2006-07-23 16:05:51 +0000936- Resync optparse with Optik 1.5.3: minor tweaks for/to tests.
937
Martin v. Löwis426f4a12006-07-18 17:46:31 +0000938- Patch #1524429: Use repr() instead of backticks in Tkinter again.
939
Brett Cannoncaebe222006-07-18 04:41:36 +0000940- Bug #1520914: Change time.strftime() to accept a zero for any position in its
941 argument tuple. For arguments where zero is illegal, the value is forced to
942 the minimum value that is correct. This is to support an undocumented but
943 common way people used to fill in inconsequential information in the time
944 tuple pre-2.4.
945
Bob Ippolito5ea4bf12006-07-15 16:53:15 +0000946- Patch #1220874: Update the binhex module for Mach-O.
947
Barry Warsawb110bad2006-07-21 14:51:07 +0000948- The email package has improved RFC 2231 support, specifically for
949 recognizing the difference between encoded (name*0*=<blah>) and non-encoded
950 (name*0=<blah>) parameter continuations. This may change the types of
951 values returned from email.message.Message.get_param() and friends.
952 Specifically in some cases where non-encoded continuations were used,
953 get_param() used to return a 3-tuple of (None, None, string) whereas now it
954 will just return the string (since non-encoded continuations don't have
955 charset and language parts).
956
957 Also, whereas % values were decoded in all parameter continuations, they are
958 now only decoded in encoded parameter parts.
959
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +0000960- Bug #1517990: IDLE keybindings on MacOS X now work correctly
961
962- Bug #1517996: IDLE now longer shows the default Tk menu when a
963 path browser, class browser or debugger is the frontmost window on MacOS X
964
Barry Warsaw00decd72006-07-27 23:43:15 +0000965- Patch #1520294: Support for getset and member descriptors in types.py,
966 inspect.py, and pydoc.py. Specifically, this allows for querying the type
967 of an object against these built-in types and more importantly, for getting
968 their docstrings printed in the interactive interpreter's help() function.

973
Neal Norwitz9b0ca792006-08-02 06:46:21 +0000974- Patch #1519025 and bug #926423: If a KeyboardInterrupt occurs during
975 a socket operation on a socket with a timeout, the exception will be
976 caught correctly. Previously, the exception was not caught.
977
Thomas Heller1393d6a2006-07-28 21:43:20 +0000978- Patch #1529514: The _ctypes extension is now compiled on more
979 openbsd target platforms.
980
Tim Peters9cab5932006-07-28 00:30:00 +0000981- The ``__reduce__()`` method of the new ``collections.defaultdict`` had
982 a memory leak, affecting pickles and deep copies.
983
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +0000984- Bug #1471938: Fix curses module build problem on Solaris 8; patch by
Andrew M. Kuchling10c2b552006-07-26 17:22:21 +0000985 Paul Eggert.
986

988
Thomas Hellerce049a02006-07-14 17:51:14 +0000989- Patch #1521817: Index range checking on ctypes arrays containing
990 exactly one element enabled again. This allows iterating over these
991 arrays, without the need to check the array size before.
992
Thomas Heller6e1ad2e2006-07-13 17:05:13 +0000993- Bug #1521375: When the code in ctypes.util.find_library was
Andrew M. Kuchlingb7eca832006-07-13 17:37:26 +0000994 run with root privileges, it could overwrite or delete
Thomas Heller2bdf29e2006-07-13 17:01:14 +0000995 /dev/null in certain cases; this is now fixed.
996
Thomas Heller47d7a062006-07-12 08:43:47 +0000997- Bug #1467450: On Mac OS X 10.3, RTLD_GLOBAL is now used as the
998 default mode for loading shared libraries in ctypes.
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000999
Thomas Hellerb4dc2ef2006-07-13 09:53:47 +00001000- Because of a misspelled preprocessor symbol, ctypes was always
1001 compiled without thread support; this is now fixed.
1002
Gregory P. Smith641cddf2006-07-28 01:35:25 +00001003- pybsddb Bug #1527939: bsddb module DBEnv dbremove and dbrename
1004 methods now allow their database parameter to be None as the
1005 sleepycat API allows.
1006
Matt Flemingec926502006-07-28 11:27:27 +00001007- Bug #1526460: Fix socketmodule compile on NetBSD as it has a different
1008 bluetooth API compared with Linux and FreeBSD.
1009
Brett Cannonf23ad3d2006-07-25 17:32:20 +00001010Tests
1011-----
1012
1013- Bug #1501330: Change test_ossaudiodev to be much more tolerant in terms of
1014 how long the test file should take to play. Now accepts taking 2.93 secs
1015 (exact time) +/- 10% instead of the hard-coded 3.1 sec.
1016
Georg Brandl4793aa32006-07-28 18:31:39 +00001017- Patch #1529686: The standard tests ``test_defaultdict``, ``test_iterlen``,
1018 ``test_uuid`` and ``test_email_codecs`` didn't actually run any tests when
1019 run via ``regrtest.py``. Now they do.

1028
1029- PythonLauncher now works correctly when the path to the script contains
1030 characters that are treated specially by the shell (such as quotes).
1031
1032- Bug #1527397: PythonLauncher now launches scripts with the working directory
1033 set to the directory that contains the script instead of the user home
Tim Peters4643c2f2006-08-10 22:45:34 +00001034 directory. That latter was an implementation accident and not what users

1047 again evaluates to a int object, not a long.
1048
Neil Schemenauer0e07b602006-07-09 16:16:34 +00001049- Bug #1501934: The scope of global variables that are locally assigned
1050 using augmented assignment is now correctly determined.
1051
Martin v. Löwisd5cfa542006-07-03 13:47:40 +00001052- Bug #927248: Recursive method-wrapper objects can now safely
1053 be released.
1054
Martin v. Löwisfcfff0a2006-07-03 12:19:50 +00001055- Bug #1417699: Reject locale-specific decimal point in float()
1056 and atof().
1057
Hye-Shik Change6a1cb92006-06-23 21:16:18 +00001058- Bug #1511381: codec_getstreamcodec() in codec.c is corrected to
1059 omit a default "error" argument for NULL pointer. This allows
1060 the parser to take a codec from cjkcodecs again.
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +00001061
Neal Norwitzfb48afa2006-07-08 05:31:37 +00001062- Bug #1519018: 'as' is now validated properly in import statements.
1063
Neal Norwitz28746ab2006-07-09 22:14:42 +00001064- On 64 bit systems, int literals that use less than 64 bits are
1065 now ints rather than longs.
1066
Neal Norwitzed657552006-07-10 00:04:44 +00001067- Bug #1512814, Fix incorrect lineno's when code at module scope
1068 started after line 256.
1069
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +00001070- New function ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dict mapping thread
1071 id to topmost thread stack frame. This is for expert use, and is
1072 especially useful for debugging application deadlocks. The functionality
1073 was previously available in Fazal Majid's ``threadframe`` extension
1074 module, but it wasn't possible to do this in a wholly threadsafe way from
1075 an extension.

1084
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +00001085- Bug #1508010: msvccompiler now requires the DISTUTILS_USE_SDK
Martin v. Löwis8d656812006-07-10 07:23:48 +00001086 environment variable to be set in order to the SDK environment
1087 for finding the compiler, include files, etc.

1092
Thomas Woutersadd19112006-07-05 11:03:49 +00001093- string.Template() now correctly handles tuple-values. Previously,
1094 multi-value tuples would raise an exception and single-value tuples would
1095 be treated as the value they contain, instead.
1096
Martin v. Löwisede77f52006-07-03 13:01:35 +00001097- Bug #822974: Honor timeout in telnetlib.{expect,read_until}

1104 degrees and radians.
1105
Martin v. Löwis4c4300d2006-07-03 10:05:30 +00001106- Reimplement turtle.circle using a polyline, to allow correct
Martin v. Löwis2b88f632006-07-03 10:19:49 +00001107 filling of arcs.
Martin v. Löwis4c4300d2006-07-03 10:05:30 +00001108

Martin v. Löwis7596e832006-07-01 15:33:37 +00001112- Bug #1513223: .close() of a _socketobj now releases the underlying
1113 socket again, which then gets closed as it becomes unreferenced.
1114
Fred Drake10497c82006-06-29 02:57:48 +00001115- Bug #1504333: Make sgmllib support angle brackets in quoted
1116 attribute values.
1117
1118- Bug #853506: Fix IPv6 address parsing in unquoted attributes in
1119 sgmllib ('[' and ']' were not accepted).
1120
Georg Brandl1be63af2006-06-28 20:23:25 +00001121- Fix a bug in the turtle module's end_fill function.
1122
Brett Cannon53ab5b72006-06-22 16:49:14 +00001123- Bug #1510580: The 'warnings' module improperly required that a Warning
1124 category be either a types.ClassType and a subclass of Warning. The proper
1125 check is just that it is a subclass with Warning as the documentation states.
1126
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +00001127- The compiler module now correctly compiles the new try-except-finally

1129
Neal Norwitz60373cd2006-06-22 06:30:50 +00001130- The wsgiref package is now installed properly on Unix.
1131
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +00001132- A bug was fixed in logging.config.fileConfig() which caused a crash on
1133 shutdown when fileConfig() was called multiple times.
1134
Gerhard Häring762fbd32006-07-02 17:48:30 +00001135- The sqlite3 module did cut off data from the SQLite database at the first
1136 null character before sending it to a custom converter. This has been fixed
1137 now.
1138
Neal Norwitz0f8b31a2006-06-28 06:28:31 +00001139Extension Modules
1140-----------------
1141
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +00001142- #1494314: Fix a regression with high-numbered sockets in 2.4.3. This
1143 means that select() on sockets > FD_SETSIZE (typically 1024) work again.
1144 The patch makes sockets use poll() internally where available.
Anthony Baxter93ab5fa2006-07-11 02:04:09 +00001145
Thomas Hellerb9cb84f2006-07-10 11:17:37 +00001146- Assigning None to pointer type fields in ctypes structures possible
1147 overwrote the wrong fields, this is fixed now.
1148
1149- Fixed a segfault in _ctypes when ctypes.wintypes were imported
1150 on non-Windows platforms.
1151
1152- Bug #1518190: The ctypes.c_void_p constructor now accepts any
1153 integer or long, without range checking.
1154
1155- Patch #1517790: It is now possible to use custom objects in the ctypes
1156 foreign function argtypes sequence as long as they provide a from_param
1157 method, no longer is it required that the object is a ctypes type.
1158
1159- The '_ctypes' extension module now works when Python is configured
1160 with the --without-threads option.
1161
Martin v. Löwisee1e06d2006-07-02 18:44:00 +00001162- Bug #1513646: os.access on Windows now correctly determines write

1166 a KeyboardInterrupt.
1167
Neal Norwitza12aa882006-07-06 06:45:08 +00001168- Bug #1296433: parsing XML with a non-default encoding and
1169 a CharacterDataHandler could crash the interpreter in pyexpat.

1177
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +00001178- 'configure' now detects the zlib library the same way as distutils.
Thomas Woutersfc34f6c2006-07-06 10:48:28 +00001179 Previously, the slight difference could cause compilation errors of the
1180 'zlib' module on systems with more than one version of zlib.
1181
Martin v. Löwis4cbd05c2006-07-06 07:05:21 +00001182- The MSI compileall step was fixed to also support a TARGETDIR
1183 with spaces in it.

1213Core and builtins
1214-----------------
1215
Georg Brandla56b9152006-06-19 06:35:54 +00001216- Patch #1507676: Error messages returned by invalid abstract object operations
1217 (such as iterating over an integer) have been improved and now include the
1218 type of the offending object to help with debugging.
1219
Brett Cannonea3912b2006-06-13 21:46:41 +00001220- Bug #992017: A classic class that defined a __coerce__() method that returned
1221 its arguments swapped would infinitely recurse and segfault the interpreter.
1222
Neal Norwitz909eb122006-06-12 02:13:21 +00001223- Fix the socket tests so they can be run concurrently.
1224
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +00001225- Removed 5 integers from C frame objects (PyFrameObject).
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +00001226 f_nlocals, f_ncells, f_nfreevars, f_stack_size, f_restricted.
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +00001227
Brett Cannon22565aa2006-06-09 22:31:23 +00001228- Bug #532646: object.__call__() will continue looking for the __call__
1229 attribute on objects until one without one is found. This leads to recursion
1230 when you take a class and set its __call__ attribute to an instance of the
1231 class. Originally fixed for classic classes, but this fix is for new-style.
1232 Removes the infinite_rec_3 crasher.
1233
Georg Brandl24250812006-06-09 18:45:48 +00001234- The string and unicode methods startswith() and endswith() now accept
1235 a tuple of prefixes/suffixes to look for. Implements RFE #1491485.
1236
Brett Cannonde3b0522006-06-08 17:00:45 +00001237- Buffer objects, at the C level, never used the char buffer
1238 implementation even when the char buffer for the wrapped object was
1239 explicitly requested (originally returned the read or write buffer).
1240 Now a TypeError is raised if the char buffer is not present but is
1241 requested.
1242
Georg Brandlddbaa662006-06-04 21:56:52 +00001243- Patch #1346214: Statements like "if 0: suite" are now again optimized
1244 away like they were in Python 2.4.
1245
Georg Brandlb7c8f542006-05-27 12:30:25 +00001246- Builtin exceptions are now full-blown new-style classes instead of
1247 instances pretending to be classes, which speeds up exception handling
1248 by about 80% in comparison to 2.5a2.
1249
Martin v. Löwisd004fc82006-05-27 08:36:52 +00001250- Patch #1494554: Update unicodedata.numeric and unicode.isnumeric to
1251 Unicode 4.1.
1252
Georg Brandlf4ef1162006-05-26 18:03:31 +00001253- Patch #921466: sys.path_importer_cache is now used to cache valid and
1254 invalid file paths for the built-in import machinery which leads to
1255 fewer open calls on startup.
1256
Tim Peters696cf432006-05-24 21:10:40 +00001257- Patch #1442927: ``long(str, base)`` is now up to 6x faster for non-power-
1258 of-2 bases. The largest speedup is for inputs with about 1000 decimal
1259 digits. Conversion from non-power-of-2 bases remains quadratic-time in
1260 the number of input digits (it was and remains linear-time for bases
1261 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32).
1262
Tim Petersb713ec22006-05-23 18:45:30 +00001263- Bug #1334662: ``int(string, base)`` could deliver a wrong answer
1264 when ``base`` was not 2, 4, 8, 10, 16 or 32, and ``string`` represented
1265 an integer close to ``sys.maxint``. This was repaired by patch
1266 #1335972, which also gives a nice speedup.
1267
Richard Jonescebbefc2006-05-23 18:28:17 +00001268- Patch #1337051: reduced size of frame objects.
1269
1270- PyErr_NewException now accepts a tuple of base classes as its
1271 "base" parameter.
1272
Richard Jones7c88dcc2006-05-23 10:37:38 +00001273- Patch #876206: function call speedup by retaining allocated frame
1274 objects.
1275
Georg Brandl7b90e162006-05-18 07:01:27 +00001276- Bug #1462152: file() now checks more thoroughly for invalid mode
1277 strings and removes a possible "U" before passing the mode to the
1278 C library function.
1279
Neal Norwitz1004a532006-05-15 07:17:23 +00001280- Patch #1488312, Fix memory alignment problem on SPARC in unicode
1281
Neal Norwitz373f0a72006-05-15 07:04:36 +00001282- Bug #1487966: Fix SystemError with conditional expression in assignment
1283
Martin v. Löwis879768d2006-05-11 13:28:43 +00001284- WindowsError now has two error code attributes: errno, which carries
1285 the error values from errno.h, and winerror, which carries the error
1286 values from winerror.h. Previous versions put the winerror.h values
1287 (from GetLastError()) into the errno attribute.
1288
Martin v. Löwis77736712006-05-04 05:51:03 +00001289- Patch #1475845: Raise IndentationError for unexpected indent.
1290
Neal Norwitzc4edb0e2006-05-02 04:43:14 +00001291- Patch #1479181: split open() and file() from being aliases for each other.
1292
Tim Peters44bd9862006-06-01 13:49:23 +00001293- Patch #1497053 & bug #1275608: Exceptions occurring in ``__eq__()``
1294 methods were always silently ignored by dictionaries when comparing keys.
1295 They are now passed through (except when using the C API function
1296 ``PyDict_GetItem()``, whose semantics did not change).
1297
1298- Bug #1456209: In some obscure cases it was possible for a class with a
1299 custom ``__eq__()`` method to confuse dict internals when class instances
1300 were used as a dict's keys and the ``__eq__()`` method mutated the dict.
1301 No, you don't have any code that did this ;-)

1307
1308- Patch #1462338: Upgrade pyexpat to expat 2.0.0
1309
Brett Cannon6ee7d012006-06-08 16:23:04 +00001310- Change binascii.hexlify to accept a read-only buffer instead of only a char
1311 buffer and actually follow its documentation.
1312
Hye-Shik Chang58ce5bc2006-06-05 00:59:54 +00001313- Fixed a potentially invalid memory access of CJKCodecs' shift-jis decoder.
1314
Nick Coghlanc649ec52006-05-29 12:43:05 +00001315- Patch #1478788 (modified version): The functional extension module has
1316 been renamed to _functools and a functools Python wrapper module added.
1317 This provides a home for additional function related utilities that are
1318 not specifically about functional programming. See PEP 309.
1319
Bob Ippolito7ccc95a2006-05-23 19:11:34 +00001320- Patch #1493701: performance enhancements for struct module.

1326
Andrew MacIntyre92913322006-06-13 15:04:24 +00001327- Patch #1454481: thread stack size is now tunable at runtime for thread

1329
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00001330- On Win32, os.listdir now supports arbitrarily-long Unicode path names
1331 (up to the system limit of 32K characters).
1332
1333- Use Win32 API to implement os.{access,chdir,chmod,mkdir,remove,rename,rmdir,utime}.
1334 As a result, these functions now raise WindowsError instead of OSError.
1335
Tim Peters7a822da2006-05-25 21:50:17 +00001336- ``time.clock()`` on Win64 should use the high-performance Windows
1337 ``QueryPerformanceCounter()`` now (as was already the case on 32-bit
1338 Windows platforms).
1339
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00001340- Calling Tk_Init twice is refused if the first call failed as that
1341 may deadlock.

Gregory P. Smith0459e4d2006-06-05 02:02:25 +00001343- bsddb: added the DB_ARCH_REMOVE flag and fixed db.DBEnv.log_archive() to
1344 accept it without potentially using an uninitialized pointer.
1345
1346- bsddb: added support for the DBEnv.log_stat() and DBEnv.lsn_reset() methods
1347 assuming BerkeleyDB >= 4.0 and 4.4 respectively. [pybsddb project SF

1355
Gregory P. Smith3c228b12006-06-05 23:59:37 +00001356- bsddb: the __len__ method of a DB object has been fixed to return correct
1357 results. It could previously incorrectly return 0 in some cases.
1358 Fixes SF bug 1493322 (pybsddb bug 1184012).
1359
Gregory P. Smithff7d9912006-06-08 05:17:08 +00001360- bsddb: the bsddb.dbtables Modify method now raises the proper error and
1361 aborts the db transaction safely when a modifier callback fails.
1362 Fixes SF python patch/bug #1408584.
1363
Gregory P. Smith506f7b52006-06-15 08:52:32 +00001364- bsddb: multithreaded DB access using the simple bsddb module interface

1397 double-byte encodings.
1398
Tim Peters43898b42006-06-14 04:09:25 +00001399- ``difflib``'s ``SequenceMatcher.get_matching_blocks()`` was changed to
1400 guarantee that adjacent triples in the return list always describe
1401 non-adjacent blocks. Previously, a pair of matching blocks could end
1402 up being described by multiple adjacent triples that formed a partition
1403 of the matching pair.
1404
Greg Ward0e0c9f42006-06-11 16:24:11 +00001405- Bug #1498146: fix optparse to handle Unicode strings in option help,

1414
Nick Coghlan676725d2006-06-08 13:54:49 +00001415- The functions update_wrapper() and wraps() have been added to the functools
1416 module. These make it easier to copy relevant metadata from the original
1417 function when writing wrapper functions.

Martin v. Löwis3f767792006-06-04 19:36:28 +00001422- Patch #1359618: Speed up charmap encoder by using a trie structure
1423 for lookup.
1424
Tim Petersd609b1a2006-06-02 23:22:51 +00001425- The functions in the ``pprint`` module now sort dictionaries by key
1426 before computing the display. Before 2.5, ``pprint`` sorted a dictionary
1427 if and only if its display required more than one line, although that
1428 wasn't documented. The new behavior increases predictability; e.g.,
1429 using ``pprint.pprint(a_dict)`` in a doctest is now reliable.
1430
Georg Brandlfd9a4b12006-05-29 20:57:01 +00001431- Patch #1497027: try HTTP digest auth before basic auth in urllib2

1449 tarfiles.
1450
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00001451- Patch #721464: pdb.Pdb instances can now be given explicit stdin and

Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00001501What's New in Python 2.5 alpha 2?
1502=================================
1503
1504*Release date: 27-APR-2006*
1505
1506Core and builtins
1507-----------------
1508
Thomas Heller1b046642006-04-18 18:51:06 +00001509- Bug #1465834: 'bdist_wininst preinstall script support' was fixed
1510 by converting these apis from macros into exported functions again:
1511
1512 PyParser_SimpleParseFile PyParser_SimpleParseString PyRun_AnyFile
1513 PyRun_AnyFileEx PyRun_AnyFileFlags PyRun_File PyRun_FileEx
1514 PyRun_FileFlags PyRun_InteractiveLoop PyRun_InteractiveOne
1515 PyRun_SimpleFile PyRun_SimpleFileEx PyRun_SimpleString
1516 PyRun_String Py_CompileString
1517
Martin v. Löwis45294a92006-04-18 06:24:08 +00001518- Under COUNT_ALLOCS, types are not necessarily immortal anymore.
1519
Martin v. Löwis19ab6c92006-04-16 18:55:50 +00001520- All uses of PyStructSequence_InitType have been changed to initialize
1521 the type objects only once, even if the interpreter is initialized
1522 multiple times.
1523
Neal Norwitz61546162006-04-14 05:20:28 +00001524- Bug #1454485, array.array('u') could crash the interpreter. This was
1525 due to PyArgs_ParseTuple(args, 'u#', ...) trying to convert buffers (strings)
1526 to unicode when it didn't make sense. 'u#' now requires a unicode string.
1527
1528- Py_UNICODE is unsigned. It was always documented as unsigned, but
1529 due to a bug had a signed value in previous versions.
1530
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001531- Patch #837242: ``id()`` of any Python object always gives a positive
1532 number now, which might be a long integer. ``PyLong_FromVoidPtr`` and
1533 ``PyLong_AsVoidPtr`` have been changed accordingly. Note that it has
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001534 never been correct to implement a ``__hash()__`` method that returns the
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001535 ``id()`` of an object:
Martin v. Löwis0bc2ab92006-04-10 20:28:17 +00001536
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001537 def __hash__(self):
1538 return id(self) # WRONG
1539
1540 because a hash result must be a (short) Python int but it was always
1541 possible for ``id()`` to return a Python long. However, because ``id()``
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001542 could return negative values before, on a 32-bit box an ``id()`` result
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001543 was always usable as a hash value before this patch. That's no longer
1544 necessarily so.
1545
1546- Python on OS X 10.3 and above now uses dlopen() (via dynload_shlib.c)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001547 to load extension modules and now provides the dl module. As a result,
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001548 sys.setdlopenflags() now works correctly on these systems. (SF patch
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001549 #1454844)
1550
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001551- Patch #1463867: enhanced garbage collection to allow cleanup of cycles
1552 involving generators that have paused outside of any ``try`` or ``with``
1553 blocks. (In 2.5a1, a paused generator that was part of a reference
1554 cycle could not be garbage collected, regardless of whether it was
1555 paused in a ``try`` or ``with`` block.)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001556
Anthony Baxter51bcb682006-04-05 14:51:42 +00001557Extension Modules

1562
Georg Brandlbbfe4fa2006-04-11 06:47:43 +00001563- Bug #1467952: os.listdir() now correctly raises an error if readdir()
1564 fails with an error condition.
1565
Gregory P. Smith3adc4aa2006-04-13 19:19:01 +00001566- Fixed bsddb.db.DBError derived exceptions so they can be unpickled.
1567
1568- Bug #1117761: bsddb.*open() no longer raises an exception when using
1569 the cachesize parameter.
1570
1571- Bug #1149413: bsddb.*open() no longer raises an exception when using
1572 a temporary db (file=None) with the 'n' flag to truncate on open.
1573
1574- Bug #1332852: bsddb module minimum BerkeleyDB version raised to 3.3
1575 as older versions cause excessive test failures.
Gregory P. Smith7f5b6f42006-04-08 07:10:51 +00001576
Armin Rigoa9017c32006-04-19 11:50:27 +00001577- Patch #1062014: AF_UNIX sockets under Linux have a special
1578 abstract namespace that is now fully supported.

1584 of the process using the returncode attribute, instead of
1585 abusing errno.
1586
Tim Peters711bf302006-04-25 03:31:36 +00001587- Patch #1475231: ``doctest`` has a new ``SKIP`` option, which causes
1588 a doctest to be skipped (the code is not run, and the expected output
1589 or exception is ignored).
1590
Nick Coghlanda2268f2006-04-24 04:37:15 +00001591- Fixed contextlib.nested to cope with exceptions being raised and
1592 caught inside exit handlers.
1593
Greg Wardab05edc2006-04-23 03:47:58 +00001594- Updated optparse module to Optik 1.5.1 (allow numeric constants in
1595 hex, octal, or binary; add ``append_const`` action; keep going if
1596 gettext cannot be imported; added ``OptionParser.destroy()`` method;
1597 added ``epilog`` for better help generation).
1598
Tim Peters21fbd572006-04-21 21:18:10 +00001599- Bug #1473760: ``tempfile.TemporaryFile()`` could hang on Windows, when
1600 called from a thread spawned as a side effect of importing a module.
1601
Phillip J. Eby17a35f92006-04-18 16:45:14 +00001602- The pydoc module now supports documenting packages contained in
1603 .zip or .egg files.
1604
1605- The pkgutil module now has several new utility functions, such
1606 as ``walk_packages()`` to support working with packages that are either
1607 in the filesystem or zip files.
1608
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001609- The mailbox module can now modify and delete messages from
1610 mailboxes, in addition to simply reading them. Thanks to Gregory
1611 K. Johnson for writing the code, and to the 2005 Google Summer of
1612 Code for funding his work.
Phillip J. Eby17a35f92006-04-18 16:45:14 +00001613

Andrew M. Kuchlingdb4018f2006-04-14 14:54:18 +00001652 specified. (Can be overridden by explicitly setting LINKCC.) Decouple
Martin v. Löwis0f48d982006-04-14 14:34:26 +00001653 CXX from --with-cxx-main, see description in README.
1654

1662
Anthony Baxter51bcb682006-04-05 14:51:42 +00001663Tests
1664-----
1665
Nick Coghlanda2268f2006-04-24 04:37:15 +00001666- test_contextlib now checks contextlib.nested can cope with exceptions

1670
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001671- The test_contextlib test in 2.5a1 wasn't actually run unless you ran
1672 it separately and by hand. It also wasn't cleaning up its changes to
1673 the current Decimal context.
1674
Thomas Woutersabd08882006-04-26 15:53:30 +00001675- regrtest.py now has a -M option to run tests that test the new limits of
1676 containers, on 64-bit architectures. Running these tests is only sensible
1677 on 64-bit machines with more than two gigabytes of memory. The argument
1678 passed is the maximum amount of memory for the tests to use.

Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00001704Core and builtins
1705-----------------
1706
Nick Coghlan43832302006-04-23 17:04:07 +00001707- PEP 338: -m command line switch now delegates to runpy.run_module
1708 allowing it to support modules in packages and zipfiles
1709
Martin v. Löwisc661b882006-04-20 04:54:23 +00001710- On Windows, .DLL is not an accepted file name extension for
1711 extension modules anymore; extensions are only found if they
1712 end in .PYD.
1713
Martin v. Löwisea62d252006-04-03 10:56:49 +00001714- Bug #1421664: sys.stderr.encoding is now set to the same value as
1715 sys.stdout.encoding.
1716
Neal Norwitz92e212f2006-04-03 04:48:37 +00001717- __import__ accepts keyword arguments.
1718
Georg Brandlccadf842006-03-31 18:54:53 +00001719- Patch #1460496: round() now accepts keyword arguments.
1720
Anthony Baxter262c00a2006-03-30 10:53:17 +00001721- Fixed bug #1459029 - unicode reprs were double-escaped.
1722
Hye-Shik Changd478f342006-03-23 12:32:36 +00001723- Patch #1396919: The system scope threads are reenabled on FreeBSD
1724 5.4 and later versions.
1725
Neal Norwitze98ccf62006-03-23 05:39:47 +00001726- Bug #1115379: Compiling a Unicode string with an encoding declaration
1727 now gives a SyntaxError.
1728
Georg Brandlabd1ff82006-03-18 07:59:59 +00001729- Previously, Python code had no easy way to access the contents of a
1730 cell object. Now, a ``cell_contents`` attribute has been added
1731 (closes patch #1170323).
1732
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001733- Patch #1123430: Python's small-object allocator now returns an arena to
1734 the system ``free()`` when all memory within an arena becomes unused
1735 again. Prior to Python 2.5, arenas (256KB chunks of memory) were never
1736 freed. Some applications will see a drop in virtual memory size now,
1737 especially long-running applications that, from time to time, temporarily
1738 use a large number of small objects. Note that when Python returns an
1739 arena to the platform C's ``free()``, there's no guarantee that the
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001740 platform C library will in turn return that memory to the operating system.
1741 The effect of the patch is to stop making that impossible, and in tests it
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001742 appears to be effective at least on Microsoft C and gcc-based systems.
1743 Thanks to Evan Jones for hard work and patience.
1744
Georg Brandl533ff6f2006-03-08 18:09:27 +00001745- Patch #1434038: property() now uses the getter's docstring if there is
1746 no "doc" argument given. This makes it possible to legitimately use
1747 property() as a decorator to produce a read-only property.
1748
Guido van Rossum9aa37ab2006-03-07 18:54:08 +00001749- PEP 357, patch 1436368: add an __index__ method to int/long and a matching
1750 nb_index slot to the PyNumberMethods struct. The slot is consulted instead
1751 of requiring an int or long in slicing and a few other contexts, enabling
1752 other objects (e.g. Numeric Python's integers) to be used as slice indices.
1753
Neal Norwitz995acdf2006-03-07 05:01:00 +00001754- Fixed various bugs reported by Coverity's Prevent tool.
1755
Brett Cannonbf364092006-03-01 04:25:17 +00001756- PEP 352, patch #1104669: Make exceptions new-style objects. Introduced the
1757 new exception base class, BaseException, which has a new message attribute.
1758 KeyboardInterrupt and SystemExit to directly inherit from BaseException now.
1759 Raising a string exception now raises a DeprecationWarning.
1760
Thomas Woutersfb609f42006-02-28 16:37:25 +00001761- Patch #1438387, PEP 328: relative and absolute imports. Imports can now be
1762 explicitly relative, using 'from .module import name' to mean 'from the same
1763 package as this module is in. Imports without dots still default to the
1764 old relative-then-absolute, unless 'from __future__ import
1765 absolute_import' is used.
1766
Brett Cannona7446e32006-02-27 23:39:10 +00001767- Properly check if 'warnings' raises an exception (usually when a filter set
1768 to "error" is triggered) when raising a warning for raising string
1769 exceptions.
1770
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001771- CO_GENERATOR_ALLOWED is no longer defined. This behavior is the default.
Neal Norwitz0023a2f2006-02-27 23:24:48 +00001772 The name was removed from Include/code.h.
1773
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001774- PEP 308: conditional expressions were added: (x if cond else y).
Neal Norwitzeb651252006-02-27 16:47:12 +00001775
Guido van Rossum1968ad32006-02-25 22:38:04 +00001776- Patch 1433928:
1777 - The copy module now "copies" function objects (as atomic objects).
1778 - dict.__getitem__ now looks for a __missing__ hook before raising
1779 KeyError.
1780
Tim Peters84ef21c2006-02-28 20:39:06 +00001781- PEP 343: with statement implemented. Needs ``from __future__ import
1782 with_statement``. Use of 'with' as a variable will generate a warning.
1783 Use of 'as' as a variable will also generate a warning (unless it's

1793 inside its own package. Fixes problem reported in patch #1433198.
1794
1795 Note: Codec packages should implement and register their own
1796 codec search function. PEP 100 has the details.
1797
Tim Peters9ea89d22006-06-04 03:26:02 +00001798- PEP 353: Using ``Py_ssize_t`` as the index type.
1799
1800- ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` builds now add ``4*sizeof(size_t)`` bytes of debugging
1801 info to each allocated block, since the ``Py_ssize_t`` changes (PEP 353)
1802 now allow Python to make use of memory blocks exceeding 2**32 bytes for
1803 some purposes on 64-bit boxes. A ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` build was limited
1804 to 4-byte allocations before.

Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00001845- Replaced most Unicode charmap codecs with new ones using the
1846 new Unicode translate string feature in the builtin charmap
1847 codec; the codecs were created from the mapping tables available
1848 at ftp.unicode.org and contain a few updates (e.g. the Mac OS

1870
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001871- All iterators now have a Boolean value of True. Formerly, some iterators
Raymond Hettinger6b27cda2005-09-24 21:23:05 +00001872 supported a __len__() method which evaluated to False when the iterator
1873 was empty.
1874
Guido van Rossum630db602005-09-20 18:49:54 +00001875- On 64-bit platforms, when __len__() returns a value that cannot be
1876 represented as a C int, raise OverflowError.
1877
Skip Montanarof8948ca2005-09-19 03:54:46 +00001878- test__locale is skipped on OS X < 10.4 (only partial locale support is

1895
Barry Warsawe2eca0b2005-08-15 18:14:19 +00001896- SF bug #900092: When tracing (e.g. for hotshot), restore 'return' events for
1897 exceptions that cause a function to exit.
1898
Raymond Hettinger9f1a6792005-07-31 01:16:36 +00001899- The implementation of set() and frozenset() was revised to use its
1900 own internal data structure. Memory consumption is reduced by 1/3
1901 and there are modest speed-ups as well. The API is unchanged.
1902
Tim Petersde7990b2005-07-17 23:45:23 +00001903- SF bug #1238681: freed pointer is used in longobject.c:long_pow().

1906 reference counts in some error exit cases.
1907
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001908- SF bug #1185883: Python's small-object memory allocator took over
1909 a block managed by the platform C library whenever a realloc specified
1910 a small new size. However, there's no portable way to know then how
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001911 much of the address space following the pointer is valid, so there's no
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001912 portable way to copy data from the C-managed block into Python's
1913 small-object space without risking a memory fault. Python's small-object
1914 realloc now leaves such blocks under the control of the platform C
1915 realloc.
1916
Michael W. Hudsonb8963812005-07-05 15:21:58 +00001917- SF bug #1232517: An overflow error was not detected properly when

1919
Raymond Hettinger3296e692005-06-29 23:29:56 +00001920- SF bug #1224347: hex longs now print with lowercase letters just
1921 like their int counterparts.
1922
Michael W. Hudson188d4362005-06-20 16:52:57 +00001923- SF bug #1163563: the original fix for bug #1010677 ("thread Module
1924 Breaks PyGILState_Ensure()") broke badly in the case of multiple
1925 interpreter states; back out that fix and do a better job (see
1926 http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-dev/2005-June/054258.html
1927 for a longer write-up of the problem).
1928
Michael W. Hudsondf888462005-06-03 14:41:55 +00001929- SF patch #1180995: marshal now uses a binary format by default when
1930 serializing floats.
1931
Michael W. Hudsonda85a902005-06-01 11:34:22 +00001932- SF patch #1181301: on platforms that appear to use IEEE 754 floats,
1933 the routines that promise to produce IEEE 754 binary representations
1934 of floats now simply copy bytes around.
1935
Skip Montanarobbf12ba2005-05-20 03:07:06 +00001936- bug #967182: disallow opening files with 'wU' or 'aU' as specified by PEP
1937 278.
1938
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001939- patch #1109424: int, long, float, complex, and unicode now check for the
1940 proper magic slot for type conversions when subclassed. Previously the
1941 magic slot was ignored during conversion. Semantics now match the way
1942 subclasses of str always behaved. int/long/float, conversion of an instance
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00001943 to the base class has been moved to the proper nb_* magic slot and out of
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001944 PyNumber_*().
Neal Norwitzcfba5f82006-04-25 05:05:03 +00001945 Thanks Walter Drwald.
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001946
Barry Warsawc8d907c2005-04-19 23:43:40 +00001947- Descriptors defined in C with a PyGetSetDef structure, where the setter is
1948 NULL, now raise an AttributeError when attempting to set or delete the
1949 attribute. Previously a TypeError was raised, but this was inconsistent
1950 with the equivalent pure-Python implementation.
1951
Michael W. Hudson774479c2005-04-18 08:46:17 +00001952- It is now safe to call PyGILState_Release() before
1953 PyEval_InitThreads() (note that if there is reason to believe there
1954 are multiple threads around you still must call PyEval_InitThreads()
1955 before using the Python API; this fix is for extension modules that
1956 have no way of knowing if Python is multi-threaded yet).
1957
Michael W. Hudsone3afc592005-04-07 10:11:19 +00001958- Typing Ctrl-C whilst raw_input() was waiting in a build with threads
1959 disabled caused a crash.
1960
Michael W. Hudsonb330adf2005-03-31 09:35:44 +00001961- Bug #1165306: instancemethod_new allowed the creation of a method
1962 with im_class == im_self == NULL, which caused a crash when called.
1963
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001964- Move exception finalisation later in the shutdown process - this
Anthony Baxter12b6f6c2005-03-29 13:36:16 +00001965 fixes the crash seen in bug #1165761
1966
Raymond Hettinger96229b12005-03-11 06:49:40 +00001967- Added two new builtins, any() and all().
1968
Brett Cannon409d8f22005-03-05 06:47:57 +00001969- Defining a class with empty parentheses is now allowed
Brett Cannonf4189912005-04-09 02:30:16 +00001970 (e.g., ``class C(): pass`` is no longer a syntax error).
1971 Patch #1176012 added support to the 'parser' module and 'compiler' package
1972 (thanks to logistix for that added support).

1986
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001987- Bug #1074011: closing sys.std{out,err} now causes a flush() and
Martin v. Löwis8e3ca8a2005-01-23 09:41:49 +00001988 an ferror() call.
1989
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00001990- min() and max() now support key= arguments with the same meaning as in

2004
Neil Schemenauercf52c072005-08-12 17:34:58 +00002005- Change the %s format specifier for str objects so that it returns a

2007 calling __str__ on the argument returns a unicode instance.
2008
Tim Petersf4e69282006-02-27 17:15:31 +00002009- Patch #1413181: changed ``PyThreadState_Delete()`` to forget about the
2010 current thread state when the auto-GIL-state machinery knows about
2011 it (since the thread state is being deleted, continuing to remember it
2012 can't help, but can hurt if another thread happens to get created with

2253 package that was included in Python 2.3, except that PEP 8 module names are
2254 now used (e.g. mail.message instead of email.Message). The MIME classes
2255 have been moved to a subpackage (e.g. email.mime.text instead of

2351 is that SHA-256 is a good choice for the time being, but
2352 that research should continue, and other alternatives may

2532
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002533- Enhancements to the csv module:
2534
2535 + Dialects are now validated by the underlying C code, better
Georg Brandl7eb4b7d2005-07-22 21:49:32 +00002536 reflecting its capabilities, and improving its compliance with
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002537 PEP 305.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002538 + Dialect parameter parsing has been re-implemented to improve error
2539 reporting.
2540 + quotechar=None and quoting=QUOTE_NONE now work the way PEP 305
2541 dictates.
2542 + the parser now removes the escapechar prefix from escaped characters.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002543 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the writer now tests for numeric
Andrew M. Kuchling6db67822006-04-18 14:04:57 +00002544 types, rather than any object that can be represented as a numeric.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002545 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the reader now casts unquoted fields
2546 to floats.
Andrew McNamaraf69d94f2005-01-13 11:30:54 +00002547 + reader now allows \r characters to be quoted (previously it only allowed
2548 \n to be quoted).
Andrew McNamarac89f2842005-01-12 07:44:42 +00002549 + writer doublequote handling improved.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002550 + Dialect classes passed to the module are no longer instantiated by
2551 the module before being parsed (the former validation scheme required
2552 this, but the mechanism was unreliable).
2553 + The dialect registry now contains instances of the internal
2554 C-coded dialect type, rather than references to python objects.
2555 + the internal c-coded dialect type is now immutable.
2556 + register_dialect now accepts the same keyword dialect specifications
2557 as the reader and writer, allowing the user to register dialects
2558 without first creating a dialect class.
2559 + a configurable limit to the size of parsed fields has been added -
2560 previously, an unmatched quote character could result in the entire
2561 file being read into the field buffer before an error was reported.
Andrew McNamara31d88962005-01-12 03:45:10 +00002562 + A new module method csv.field_size_limit() has been added that sets
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002563 the parser field size limit (returning the former limit). The initial
2564 limit is 128kB.
Andrew McNamara7f2053e2005-01-12 11:17:16 +00002565 + A line_num attribute has been added to the reader object, which tracks
2566 the number of lines read from the source iterator. This is not
2567 the same as the number of records returned, as records can span
2568 multiple lines.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002569 + reader and writer objects were not being registered with the cyclic-GC.
2570 This has been fixed.
2571
Brett Cannone6539c42005-01-08 02:43:53 +00002572- _DummyThread objects in the threading module now delete self.__block that is
2573 inherited from _Thread since it uses up a lock allocated by 'thread'. The
2574 lock primitives tend to be limited in number and thus should not be wasted on
2575 a _DummyThread object. Fixes bug #1089632.

2581
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002582- locale.py now uses an updated locale alias table (built using

2584 alias file); the encoding lookup was enhanced to use Python's
Andrew M. Kuchling88b85822005-08-23 00:57:07 +00002585 encoding alias table.

2604 be ignored by the rest of the module. (Bug #1078905).
2605
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002606- heapq.nsmallest() and heapq.nlargest() now support key= arguments with

2611 tokenizer with very long source lines.
2612
Barry Warsaw538561e2006-01-01 21:48:54 +00002613- Bug #1083110: ``zlib.decompress.flush()`` would segfault if called

2624 correctly.
2625
Walter Dörwaldbc8e6422005-04-21 21:32:03 +00002626- Partial fixes for SF bugs #1163244 and #1175396: If a chunk read by
2627 ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` has a trailing "\r", read one more
2628 character even if the user has passed a size parameter to get a proper
2629 line ending. Remove the special handling of a "\r\n" that has been split
2630 between two lines.
2631
Walter Dörwalda47d1c02005-08-30 10:23:14 +00002632- Bug #1251300: On UCS-4 builds the "unicode-internal" codec will now complain
2633 about illegal code points. The codec now supports PEP 293 style error
2634 handlers.
2635
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00002636- Bug #1235646: ``codecs.StreamRecoder.next()`` now reencodes the data it reads
Walter Dörwaldc5238b82005-09-01 11:56:53 +00002637 from the input stream, so that the output is a byte string in the correct
2638 encoding instead of a unicode string.

2641 considering it exactly like a '*'.
2642

2650
Walter Dörwald58917a62006-03-31 15:26:22 +00002651- Bug #947906: An object oriented interface has been added to the calendar
2652 module. It's possible to generate HTML calendar now and the module can be
Walter Dörwald48d5e502006-04-01 07:57:00 +00002653 called as a script (e.g. via ``python -mcalendar``). Localized month and
2654 weekday names can be ouput (even if an exotic encoding is used) using
2655 special classes that use unicode.

2681
Brett Cannon08cd5982005-04-24 22:26:38 +00002682- EXTRA_CFLAGS has been introduced as an environment variable to hold compiler
2683 flags that change binary compatibility. Changes were also made to
2684 distutils.sysconfig to also use the environment variable when used during
Martin v. Löwisd7c795e2005-04-25 07:14:03 +00002685 compilation of the interpreter and of C extensions through distutils.

Bob Ippolitoed233462005-03-29 13:47:59 +00002687- SF patch 1171735: Darwin 8's headers are anal about POSIX compliance,
2688 and linking has changed (prebinding is now deprecated, and libcc_dynamic
2689 no longer exists). This configure patch makes things right.
2690
Martin v. Löwise2713be2005-03-08 15:03:08 +00002691- Bug #1158607: Build with --disable-unicode again.
2692
Brett Cannon46d96232005-02-16 00:07:19 +00002693- spwdmodule.c is built only if either HAVE_GETSPNAM or HAVE_HAVE_GETSPENT is
2694 defined. Discovered as a result of not being able to build on OS X.
2695
Brett Cannon516592f2004-12-07 00:42:59 +00002696- setup.py now uses the directories specified in LDFLAGS using the -L option
2697 and in CPPFLAGS using the -I option for adding library and include
2698 directories, respectively, for compiling extension modules against. This has
2699 led to the core being compiled using the values in CPPFLAGS. It also removes
2700 the need for the special-casing of both DarwinPorts and Fink for darwin since
2701 the proper directories can be specified in LDFLAGS (``-L/sw/lib`` for Fink,
2702 ``-L/opt/local/lib`` for DarwinPorts) and CPPFLAGS (``-I/sw/include`` for
2703 Fink, ``-I/opt/local/include`` for DarwinPorts).
2704
Brett Cannon43802422005-02-10 20:48:03 +00002705- Test in configure.in that checks for tzset no longer dependent on tm->tm_zone
2706 to exist in the struct (not required by either ISO C nor the UNIX 2 spec).
2707 Tests for sanity in tzname when HAVE_TZNAME defined were also defined.
2708 Closes bug #1096244. Thanks Gregory Bond.

2711-----
2712
Tim Petersc9d78aa2006-03-26 23:27:58 +00002713- ``PyMem_{Del, DEL}`` and ``PyMem_{Free, FREE}`` no longer map to
2714 ``PyObject_{Free, FREE}``. They map to the system ``free()`` now. If memory
2715 is obtained via the ``PyObject_`` family, it must be released via the
2716 ``PyObject_`` family, and likewise for the ``PyMem_`` family. This has
2717 always been officially true, but when Python's small-object allocator was
2718 introduced, an attempt was made to cater to a few extension modules
2719 discovered at the time that obtained memory via ``PyObject_New`` but
2720 released it via ``PyMem_DEL``. It's years later, and if such code still
2721 exists it will fail now (probably with segfaults, but calling wrong
2722 low-level memory management functions can yield many symptoms).
2723
Raymond Hettingerbeb31012005-08-16 03:47:52 +00002724- Added a C API for set and frozenset objects.
