10*Release date: XX-XXX-2008*
11
12Core and Builtins
13-----------------
14
Martin v. Löwis9fa5a282008-09-11 06:53:30 +000015- Issue #3642: Suppress warning in obmalloc when size_t is larger than uint.
16
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +000017- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
18 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
19 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
20 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
21 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
22 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
23 64bit values.
24
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +000025- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on
26 error.
27
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd3ffb892008-09-09 07:24:30 +000028- Issue #3777: long() applied to a float object now always return a long
29 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
30 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
31 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
32
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +000033- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
34 a unicode argument.
35
Benjamin Peterson17f03ca2008-09-01 14:18:30 +000036- Issue #3683: Fix compilation when --without-threads is given.
37
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000038- Issue #3668: Fix a memory leak with the "s*" argument parser in
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000039 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000040 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
41
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000042- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +000043 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
44 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
45 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
46 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
47 type object.
48
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +000049- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.
50
51- Fix memory leaks found with valgrind and update suppressions file.
52
53- Fix compiler warnings in opt mode which would lead to invalid memory reads.
54
55- Fix problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker.
56
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +000057- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
58 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
59
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +000060- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
61 ``__delslice__``.
62
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +000063- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared
64 library targets in the Makefile.
65
Gregory P. Smith980b99b2008-09-07 05:15:18 +000066- Issue #1204: The configure script now tests for additional libraries
67 that may be required when linking against readline. This fixes issues
68 with x86_64 builds on some platforms (a few Linux flavors and OpenBSD).
69
Benjamin Peterson14cb6bc2008-08-26 17:08:40 +000070C-API

84 with statements, or when the methods are invoked in the wrong order.
85
Vinay Sajip844f7412008-09-09 13:42:08 +000086- Issue #3809: Fixed spurious 'test.blah' file left behind by test_logging.
87
Nick Coghland2e09382008-09-11 12:11:06 +000088- Issue #3781: Clean up the API for warnings.catch_warnings() by having it

115 warnings.catch_warnings() along with some API cleanup. Expanding the tests
116 for catch_warnings() also led to an improvement in the raising of a
117 DeprecationWarning related to warnings.warn_explicit().
118
Benjamin Peterson973e6c22008-09-01 23:12:58 +0000119- The deprecation warnings for the old camelCase threading API were removed.

171
Barry Warsaw07a4a382008-08-21 01:15:08 +0000172*Release date: 20-Aug-2008*
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000173
174Core and Builtins
175-----------------
176
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000177- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
178 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
179 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
180 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
181 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
182 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
183 default.
184
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000185- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
186 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
187
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000188- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
189 value again.
190
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000191- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
192 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
193 and introducing s*.
194
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000195- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
196 object was stored in the freelist.
197
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000198- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
199 ValueError consistently across platforms.
200
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000201- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
202 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
203 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
204
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000205- Apply security patches from Apple.
206
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000207- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
208 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
209
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000210- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
211 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
212
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000213- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
214 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
215 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
216
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000217- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
218 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
219 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
220 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
221 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
222 failed have been fixed.
223
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000224Library
225-------
226
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000227- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
228
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000229- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
230 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
231
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000232- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
233 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
234 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
235
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000236- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
237 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
238 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
239 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
240 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
241 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
242
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000243- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
244 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
245
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000246- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
247
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000248- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
249
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000250- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
251
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000252- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
253 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
254
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000255- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
256 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
257
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000258- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
259 in a redirect.
260
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000261- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +0000262 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000263
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +0000264- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
265 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
266
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000267- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
268 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
269 regular expression.
270
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000271- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
272 thread-safe.
273
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +0000274- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
275 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
276 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
277
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +0000278- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
279
Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +0000280- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
281 menu entries were not deleted.
282
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +0000283- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
284 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
285
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000286- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
287 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
288
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000289- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
290 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
291 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
292
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +0000293- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
294 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
295 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
296
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +0000297- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
298 the reload() built-in has been removed.
299
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000300- Changed code in the following modules/packages to remove warnings raised
Brett Cannonc1b76e42008-08-09 23:06:16 +0000301 while running under the ``-3`` flag: aifc, asynchat, asyncore, bdb, bsddb,
Brett Cannon047e4a92008-08-17 04:16:04 +0000302 ConfigParser, cookielib, csv, difflib, distutils, DocXMLRPCServer, email,
303 filecmp, fileinput, inspect, logging, modulefinder, pdb, pickle, profile,
304 pstats, pydoc, re, rlcompleter, SimpleXMLRPCServer, shelve, socket,

369-----------------
370
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000371- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
372 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
373 an integer using operator.index().
374
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000375- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
376 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
377
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000378- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
379 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
380
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000381- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
382 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
383 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
384
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000385- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
386 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
387 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
388 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
389 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
390 level.
391
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000392- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
393 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
394 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
395 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
396 all imports from that module to fail.
397
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000398- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
399 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
400 new-style classes.
401
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000402- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is

404 another file in sys.stdout.
405
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000406- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from

408 another thread's dictionary.
409
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000410- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
411 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
412 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
413 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
414 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
415 10, -1).
416
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000417- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
418 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
419 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000457- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
458 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000459 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000460 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000931- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
932 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
933 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
934 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
935 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
936 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
937 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
938 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000980- Issue #2513: distutils on Windows is now capable of cross-compiling
Mark Hammond495cf992008-04-07 01:53:39 +0000981 extension modules between 32 and 64 bit platforms. See the distutls
982 build documentation for more information.
983
Gregory P. Smithaa63d0d2008-04-06 23:11:17 +0000984- Issue #815646: Individual file objects may now be used from multiple
985 threads at once without fear of crashing the Python interpreter. If
986 file.close() is called while an object is in use by another thread

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001001- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1002 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1003 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1004 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1005 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1006 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1007 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1008 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1009 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1010 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1011 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1012 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1013 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1014 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1015 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1016 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1017 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1018 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1019 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1020 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1021
1022 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1023 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1024 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1025 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1026 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1027 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1028 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1029 access to the underlying socket used.
1030
1031 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1032 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1033 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001034
1035 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001036 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001037 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
1038 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
1039
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001040 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
1041 suite to run in parallel without issue.

1330 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1331 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1332 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1333 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
