Barry Warsaw6a0b5592008-08-21 02:12:56 +00007What's New in Python 2.6 release candidate 1?
8=============================================
9
10*Release date: XX-XXX-2008*
11
12Core and Builtins
13-----------------
14
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd3ffb892008-09-09 07:24:30 +000015- Issue #3777: long() applied to a float object now always return a long
16 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
17 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
18 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
19
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +000020- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
21 a unicode argument.
22
Benjamin Peterson17f03ca2008-09-01 14:18:30 +000023- Issue #3683: Fix compilation when --without-threads is given.
24
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000025- Issue #3668: Fix a memory leak with the "s*" argument parser in
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000026 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000027 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
28
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000029- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +000030 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
31 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
32 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
33 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
34 type object.
35
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +000036- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.
37
38- Fix memory leaks found with valgrind and update suppressions file.
39
40- Fix compiler warnings in opt mode which would lead to invalid memory reads.
41
42- Fix problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker.
43
Christian Heimesfb1813c2008-08-22 19:34:15 +000044- Issue #3642: Changed type of numarenas from uint to size_t
45 in order to silence a compilier warning on 64bit OSes.
46
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +000047- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
48 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
49
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +000050- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
51 ``__delslice__``.
52
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +000053- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared
54 library targets in the Makefile.
55
Gregory P. Smith980b99b2008-09-07 05:15:18 +000056- Issue #1204: The configure script now tests for additional libraries
57 that may be required when linking against readline. This fixes issues
58 with x86_64 builds on some platforms (a few Linux flavors and OpenBSD).
59

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000145What's New in Python 2.6 beta 3?
146================================
147
Barry Warsaw07a4a382008-08-21 01:15:08 +0000148*Release date: 20-Aug-2008*
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000149
150Core and Builtins
151-----------------
152
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000153- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
154 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
155 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
156 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
157 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
158 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
159 default.
160
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000161- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
162 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
163
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000164- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
165 value again.
166
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000167- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
168 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
169 and introducing s*.
170
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000171- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
172 object was stored in the freelist.
173
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000174- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
175 ValueError consistently across platforms.
176
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000177- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
178 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
179 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
180
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000181- Apply security patches from Apple.
182
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000183- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
184 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
185
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000186- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
187 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
188
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000189- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
190 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
191 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
192
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000193- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
194 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
195 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
196 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
197 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
198 failed have been fixed.
199
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000200Library
201-------
202
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000203- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
204
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000205- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
206 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
207
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000208- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
209 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
210 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
211
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000212- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
213 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
214 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
215 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
216 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
217 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
218
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000219- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
220 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
221
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000222- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
223
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000224- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
225
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000226- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
227
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000228- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
229 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
230
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000231- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
232 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
233
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000234- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
235 in a redirect.
236
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000237- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +0000238 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000239
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +0000240- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
241 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
242
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000243- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
244 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
245 regular expression.
246
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000247- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
248 thread-safe.
249
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +0000250- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
251 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
252 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
253
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +0000254- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.

257 menu entries were not deleted.
258
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +0000259- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
260 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
261
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000262- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
263 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
264
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000265- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
266 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
267 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
268
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +0000269- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
270 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
271 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
272
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +0000273- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
274 the reload() built-in has been removed.
275

313
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +0000314- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a
315 file name rather than a ZipInfo instance, so files are extracted with
316 mode 0600 rather than 000 under Unix.
317
Gregory P. Smitha36f8fe2008-08-04 00:13:29 +0000318- Issue #1857: subprocess.Popen.poll gained an additional _deadstate keyword

332
Nick Coghlan2a0c2b12008-08-04 12:47:17 +0000333- Issue #643841: The language reference now provides more detailed

345-----------------
346
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000347- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
348 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
349 an integer using operator.index().
350
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000351- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
352 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
353
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000354- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
355 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
356
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000357- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
358 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
359 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
360
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000361- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
362 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
363 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
364 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
365 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
366 level.
367
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000368- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
369 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
370 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
371 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
372 all imports from that module to fail.
373
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000374- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
375 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
376 new-style classes.
377
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000378- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
379 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
380 another file in sys.stdout.
381
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000382- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
383 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
384 another thread's dictionary.
385
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000386- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
387 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
388 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
389 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
390 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
391 10, -1).
392
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000393- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
394 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
395 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000396
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000397- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
398 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
399 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000433- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
434 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000435 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000436 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never

454
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000455- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000907- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
908 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
909 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
910 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
911 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
912 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
913 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
914 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000977- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
978 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
979 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
980 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
981 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
982 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
983 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
984 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
985 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
986 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
987 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
988 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
989 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
990 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
991 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
992 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
993 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
994 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
995 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
996 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
997
998 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
999 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1000 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1001 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1002 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1003 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1004 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1005 access to the underlying socket used.
1006
1007 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1008 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1009 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001010
1011 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001012 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,

1014 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
1015
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001016 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
1017 suite to run in parallel without issue.

1295
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001296- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1297 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1298 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1299 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1300 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1301 module is:
1302 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1303
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001304- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1305 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1306 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1307 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1308 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1309 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1310
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001311- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1312 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1313 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1314 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1315 PyObject_Format().
1316
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001317- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1318 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1319 state.

1330 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001331
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001332- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
