33 code has been kept as backup). This will allow for using the 'warning's
34 machinery in such places as the parser where use of pure Python code is not
35 possible.
36
Barry Warsawba437742008-04-04 01:34:41 +000037Library
38-------
39
Gregory P. Smithd59fefb2008-04-22 08:11:33 +000040- The getpass module has been improved on Unix. It now uses /dev/tty
41 by default and uses stderr instead of stdout. A GetPassWarning is
42 issued when input echo cannot be controlled.
Gregory P. Smith41e30182008-04-21 21:31:08 +000043

46
Nick Coghlan106fc482008-04-15 10:25:31 +000047- Issue #2439: Added new function pkgutil.get_data(), which is a
48 convenience wrapper for the PEP 302 get_data() API.
49
Thomas Heller046e6a42008-04-14 16:10:07 +000050- Issue #2616: The ctypes.pointer() and ctypes.POINTER() functions are

54 detail of the public ``types`` module, has been removed and replaced by pure
55 python code.
56
Mark Hammond495cf992008-04-07 01:53:39 +000057- Issue #2513: distutils on Windows is now capable of cross-compiling
58 extension modules between 32 and 64 bit platforms. See the distutls
59 build documentation for more information.
60
Gregory P. Smithaa63d0d2008-04-06 23:11:17 +000061- Issue #815646: Individual file objects may now be used from multiple
62 threads at once without fear of crashing the Python interpreter. If
63 file.close() is called while an object is in use by another thread
64 an IOError exception will be raised and the file will not be closed.
65
Thomas Hellerf7906482008-04-04 19:43:25 +000066- The bundled libffi copy is now in sync with the recently released
67 libffi3.0.5 version, apart from some small changes to
68 Modules/_ctypes/libffi/configure.ac.
69
Fred Drake46c58c12008-04-04 05:41:30 +000070- Issue #2385: distutils.core.run_script() makes __file__ available, so the
71 controlled environment will more closely mirror the typical script
72 environment. This supports setup.py scripts that refer to data files.
73
Barry Warsawba437742008-04-04 01:34:41 +000074Tests
75-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +000076- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining ports
77 to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an effort to
78 facilitate running multiple instances of the entire regression test suite
79 in parallel without issue. test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such
80 that it will always return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case
81 with the previous implementation, especially if socket options had been
82 set that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
83 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception if it
84 is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the SO_REUSEADDR or
85 SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if available, bind_port()
86 will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on the socket it's been passed.
87 This currently only applies to Windows. This option prevents any other
88 sockets from binding to the host/port we've bound to, thus removing the
89 possibility of the 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it,
90 that occurs when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a
91 host/port that's already been bound by another socket. The optional
92 preferred port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
93 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
94
95 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will pass
96 a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an unused port.
97 The temporary socket object is then closed and deleted, and the port is
98 returned. This method should only be used for obtaining an unused port
99 in order to pass to an external program (i.e. the -accept [port] argument
100 to openssl's s_server mode) or as a parameter to a server-oriented class
101 that doesn't give you direct access to the underlying socket used.
102
103 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used for
104 the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and connect).
105
106 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
107 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
108 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
109 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
110
111 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test suite to
112 run in parallel without issue.

114Build
115-----
116
Thomas Hellerdc96a772008-04-04 10:07:55 +0000117- Issue #2544: On HP-UX systems, use 'gcc -shared' for linking when
118 gcc is used as compiler.
119
Barry Warsawba437742008-04-04 01:34:41 +0000120C API
121-----
122
Christian Heimes6f341092008-04-18 23:13:07 +0000123- Added implementation of copysign, acosh, asinh, atanh and log1p
124 to the new files Include/pymath.h and Python/pymath.h for
125 platforms which provide the functions through their libm. The
126 files also contains several helpers and constants for math.

356-----------------
357
Fred Drakea8ee94b2008-03-01 02:45:07 +0000358- Issue #2051: pyc and pyo files are no longer created with permission
Barry Warsaw52973612008-03-01 02:23:38 +0000359 644. The mode is now inherited from the py file.
Christian Heimes40346852008-02-23 17:52:07 +0000360
Georg Brandlad61bc82008-02-23 15:11:18 +0000361- Issue #2067: file.__exit__() now calls subclasses' close() method.
362
363- Patch #1759: Backport of PEP 3129 class decorators.
Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +0000364
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000365- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +0000366 issue 215555 for a discussion.
367
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +0000368- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
369 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
370 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
371 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
372 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
373 module is:
374 from future_builtins import hex, oct
375
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +0000376- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
377 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
378 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
379 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
380 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
381 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
382
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +0000383- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
384 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
385 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
386 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
387 PyObject_Format().
388
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +0000389- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted __del__
390 methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent state.
391
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000392- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc60d6c7f2008-02-15 21:22:45 +0000394 on a registered virtual subclass.
395
Christian Heimes2f0da532008-02-15 06:57:08 +0000396- Fixed repr() and str() of complex numbers with infinity or nan as real or
397 imaginary part.
398
Andrew M. Kuchlingc6511a82008-03-04 01:48:26 +0000399- Clear all free lists during a gc.collect() of the highest generation in order
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +0000400 to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back memory to the
401 OS earlier.
402

405
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +0000406- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
407 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
408
Christian Heimes6075a822008-02-06 12:44:34 +0000409- Limit free list of method and builtin function objects to 256 entries

430
Georg Brandl0cdf9a32008-01-26 14:14:20 +0000431- Patch #1473257: generator objects gain a gi_code attribute. This is the
432 same object as the func_code attribute of the function that produced the
433 generator.
434
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +0000435- Issue #1920: "while 0" statements were completely removed by the compiler,
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000436 even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is supposed to be run when
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +0000437 the condition is false. Now the compiler correctly emits bytecode for the
438 "else" suite.

561 PyObject_Call() never calling back out to Python code to trigger recursion
562 depth updates/checks. Required the creation of a static RuntimeError
563 instance in case normalizing an exception put the recursion check value past
564 its limit. Fixes crashers infinite_rec_(1|2|4|5).py.

595 inherited from a builtin base.
596
Vinay Sajip8549ce32007-05-06 17:53:37 +0000597- When __slots__ are set to a unicode string, make it work the same as
Neal Norwitzcbd9ee62007-04-14 05:25:50 +0000598 setting a plain string, ie don't expand to single letter identifiers.

Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +0000611- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
612 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
613 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the
614 other one is. For backwards compatibility, when both are
615 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +0000616 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
617 as supported by type.__new__().
