28 returned a path longer than MAX_PATH. (But It's doubtful this code path is
29 really executed because I cannot move to such directory on win2k)
30
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd78b9dc2008-10-07 20:32:10 +000031- Issue #4069: When set.remove(element) is used with a set element, the element
32 is temporarily replaced with an equivalent frozenset. But the eventual
33 KeyError would always report the empty frozenset([]) as the missing key. Now
34 it correctly refers to the initial element.

150Core and Builtins
151-----------------
152
Martin v. Löwis9fa5a282008-09-11 06:53:30 +0000153- Issue #3642: Suppress warning in obmalloc when size_t is larger than uint.
154
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +0000155- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
156 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
157 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
158 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
159 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
160 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
161 64bit values.
162
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +0000163- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on
164 error.
165
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd3ffb892008-09-09 07:24:30 +0000166- Issue #3777: long() applied to a float object now always return a long
167 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
168 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
169 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
170
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +0000171- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
172 a unicode argument.

Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000177 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +0000178 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
179
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000180- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +0000181 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
182 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
183 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
184 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
185 type object.
186
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +0000187- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.
188
189- Fix memory leaks found with valgrind and update suppressions file.
190
191- Fix compiler warnings in opt mode which would lead to invalid memory reads.
192
193- Fix problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker.
194
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +0000195- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
196 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
197
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +0000198- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
199 ``__delslice__``.
200
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +0000201- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared
202 library targets in the Makefile.
203
Gregory P. Smith980b99b2008-09-07 05:15:18 +0000204- Issue #1204: The configure script now tests for additional libraries
205 that may be required when linking against readline. This fixes issues
206 with x86_64 builds on some platforms (a few Linux flavors and OpenBSD).
207

225 with statements, or when the methods are invoked in the wrong order.

326Core and Builtins
327-----------------
328
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000329- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
330 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
331 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
332 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
333 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
334 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
335 default.
336
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000337- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
338 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
339
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000340- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
341 value again.
342
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000343- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
344 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
345 and introducing s*.
346
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000347- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
348 object was stored in the freelist.
349
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000350- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
351 ValueError consistently across platforms.
352
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000353- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
354 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
355 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
356
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000357- Apply security patches from Apple.
358
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000359- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
360 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
361
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000362- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
363 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
364
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000365- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
366 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
367 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
368
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000369- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
370 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
371 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
372 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
373 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
374 failed have been fixed.
375
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000376Library
377-------
378
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000379- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
380
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000381- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
382 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
383
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000384- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
385 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
386 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
387
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000388- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
389 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
390 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
391 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
392 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
393 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
394
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000395- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
396 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
397
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000398- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
399
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000400- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
401
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000402- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
403
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000404- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
405 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
406
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000407- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
408 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
409
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000410- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
411 in a redirect.
412
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000413- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +0000414 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000415
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +0000416- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
417 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
418
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000419- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
420 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
421 regular expression.
422
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000423- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
424 thread-safe.
425
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +0000426- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
427 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
428 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
429
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +0000430- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
431
Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +0000432- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
433 menu entries were not deleted.
434
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +0000435- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
436 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
437
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000438- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
439 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
440
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000441- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
442 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
443 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
444
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +0000445- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
446 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
447 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
448
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +0000449- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
450 the reload() built-in has been removed.
451
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000452- Changed code in the following modules/packages to remove warnings raised
Brett Cannonc1b76e42008-08-09 23:06:16 +0000453 while running under the ``-3`` flag: aifc, asynchat, asyncore, bdb, bsddb,
Brett Cannon047e4a92008-08-17 04:16:04 +0000454 ConfigParser, cookielib, csv, difflib, distutils, DocXMLRPCServer, email,
455 filecmp, fileinput, inspect, logging, modulefinder, pdb, pickle, profile,
456 pstats, pydoc, re, rlcompleter, SimpleXMLRPCServer, shelve, socket,
457 subprocess, sqlite3, tarfile, Tkinter, test.test_support, textwrap,
458 threading, tokenize, traceback, urlparse, wsgiref, xml, xmlrpclib.
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000459
Lars Gustäbel727bd0b2008-08-02 11:26:39 +0000460- Issue #3039: Fix tarfile.TarFileCompat.writestr() which always
461 raised an AttributeError.
462
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000463- Issue #2523: Fix quadratic behaviour when read()ing a binary file without
Antoine Pitroude781a42008-08-09 12:43:23 +0000464 asking for a specific length. This problem only affected files opened
465 using the new "io" module, not the built-in open() function.
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000466
Mark Dickinsonfe84cce2008-07-27 06:39:07 +0000467- Issue #3449: Update decimal module to use most recent specification
468 (v. 1.68) and tests (v. 2.58) from IBM.
469
Skip Montanarof9ac43f2008-07-27 00:50:41 +0000470- Issue 3437: Bug fix in robotparser parsing of Allow: lines.
471
Raymond Hettinger8c664e82008-07-25 18:43:33 +0000472- Issue 1592: Improve error reporting when operations are attempted
473 on a closed shelf.
474
Georg Brandlf9efabb2008-07-23 15:16:45 +0000475- Deprecate the "ast" parser function aliases.
476
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000477- Issue #3120: On 64-bit Windows the subprocess module was truncating handles.
478
479- Issue #3303: Fix a crash in locale.strcoll() when calling it with
480 invalid arguments.
481
482- Issue #3302: Fix several crashes when calling locale's gettext functions
483 with None arguments.
484
485- Issue #3389: Allow resolving dotted names for handlers in logging
486 configuration files.
487
488- Deprecate the sunaudio module for removal in Python 3.0.
489
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +0000490- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a
491 file name rather than a ZipInfo instance, so files are extracted with
492 mode 0600 rather than 000 under Unix.
493
Gregory P. Smitha36f8fe2008-08-04 00:13:29 +0000494- Issue #1857: subprocess.Popen.poll gained an additional _deadstate keyword
495 argument in python 2.5, this broke code that subclassed Popen to include its
496 own poll method. Fixed my moving _deadstate to an _internal_poll method.
497
Martin v. Löwis8dbf3642008-08-01 14:10:26 +0000498Build

501- Generate the PatternGrammar pickle during "make install".
502
Nick Coghlan2a0c2b12008-08-04 12:47:17 +0000503Documentation
504-------------
505
Nick Coghlan6e8fef02008-08-18 13:14:22 +0000506- Issue #2235: the C API function PyObject_HashNotImplemented and its
507 interaction with the tp_hash slot (added in 2.6b2) are now documented
508
Nick Coghlan2a0c2b12008-08-04 12:47:17 +0000509- Issue #643841: The language reference now provides more detailed
510 coverage of the lookup process for special methods. The disclaimers
511 regarding lack of coverage of new-style classes have also been
512 removed, since the coverage is now fairly reasonable.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000518*Release date: 17-Jul-2008*
519
Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000520Core and Builtins
521-----------------
522
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000523- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
524 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
525 an integer using operator.index().
526
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000527- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
528 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
529
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000530- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
531 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
532
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000533- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
534 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
535 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
536
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000537- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
538 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
539 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
540 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
541 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
542 level.
543
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000544- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
545 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
546 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
547 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
548 all imports from that module to fail.
549
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000550- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
551 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
552 new-style classes.
553
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000554- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
555 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
556 another file in sys.stdout.
557
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000558- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
559 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
560 another thread's dictionary.
561
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000562- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
563 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
564 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
565 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
566 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
567 10, -1).
568
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000569- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
570 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
571 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000572
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000573- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
574 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
575 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +0000576

579
Thomas Heller57adf222008-08-14 19:10:48 +0000580- Issue #3554: ctypes.string_at and ctypes.wstring_at did call Python
581 api functions without holding the GIL, which could lead to a fatal
582 error when they failed.
583
Martin v. Löwisaabf4042008-08-02 07:20:25 +0000584- Issue #799428: Fix Tkinter.Misc._nametowidget to unwrap Tcl command objects.
585

591
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000592- Issue #3125: Remove copy_reg in multiprocessing and replace it with
593 ForkingPickler.register() to resolve conflict with ctypes.
594
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000595- Issue #3090: Fixed ARCHFLAGS parsing on OS/X
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000596
Thomas Heller880f5292008-07-15 19:39:38 +0000597- Issue #3313: Fixed a crash when a failed dlopen() call does not set
598 a valid dlerror() message.
599
Thomas Heller2bad6572008-07-15 17:19:50 +0000600- Issue #3258: Fixed a crash when a ctypes POINTER type to an
601 incomplete structure was created.
602
Brett Cannon3d0b9f02008-07-13 01:15:07 +0000603- Issue #3339: dummy_thread.acquire() should not return None.
604
Raymond Hettingerb01713e2008-07-10 14:34:57 +0000605- Issue #3285: Fractions from_float() and from_decimal() accept Integral arguments.
606
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000607- Issue #3301: Bisect module behaved badly when lo was negative.
Raymond Hettinger3cd1e422008-07-10 14:03:19 +0000608
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000609- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
610 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000611 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000612 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
613 merged into trunk.
614
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +0000615- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().
616

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001083- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
1084 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
1085 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
1086 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
1087 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
1088 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
1089 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
1090 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

1151-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001152
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001153- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1154 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1155 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1156 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1157 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1158 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1159 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1160 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1161 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1162 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1163 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1164 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1165 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1166 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1167 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1168 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1169 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1170 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1171 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1172 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1173
1174 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1175 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1176 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1177 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1178 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1179 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1180 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1181 access to the underlying socket used.
1182
1183 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1184 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1185 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001186
1187 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001188 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,

1191
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001192 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test

1460-----------------
1461
Fred Drakea8ee94b2008-03-01 02:45:07 +00001462- Issue #2051: pyc and pyo files are no longer created with permission
Barry Warsaw52973612008-03-01 02:23:38 +00001463 644. The mode is now inherited from the py file.
Christian Heimes40346852008-02-23 17:52:07 +00001464
Georg Brandlad61bc82008-02-23 15:11:18 +00001465- Issue #2067: file.__exit__() now calls subclasses' close() method.
1466
1467- Patch #1759: Backport of PEP 3129 class decorators.
Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +00001468
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001469- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +00001470 issue 215555 for a discussion.
1471
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001472- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1473 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1474 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1475 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1476 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1477 module is:
1478 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1479
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001480- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1481 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1482 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1483 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1484 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1485 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1486
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001487- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1488 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1489 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1490 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1491 PyObject_Format().
1492
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001493- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1494 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1495 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +00001496
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001497- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001498 prevent a possible crash: an Abstract Base Class would try to access
1499 a slot on a registered virtual subclass.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc60d6c7f2008-02-15 21:22:45 +00001500

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001504- Clear all free lists during a gc.collect() of the highest generation
1505 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1506 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001507
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001508- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
1509 subclass of collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set
1510 to a bound method.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcb01aa432008-02-08 00:56:02 +00001511
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +00001512- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
1513 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
1514
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001515- Limit free list of method and builtin function objects to 256
1516 entries each.
Christian Heimes6075a822008-02-06 12:44:34 +00001517
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001518- Patch #1953: Added ``sys._compact_freelists()`` and the C API

1523 calls. Python expected the return type int but the fork familie
1524 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +00001525
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001526- Issue #1678380: Fix a bug that identifies 0j and -0j when they

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001538- Patch #1473257: generator objects gain a gi_code attribute. This is
1539 the same object as the func_code attribute of the function that
1540 produced the generator.
Georg Brandl0cdf9a32008-01-26 14:14:20 +00001541
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001542- Issue #1920: "while 0" statements were completely removed by the
1543 compiler, even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is
1544 supposed to be run when the condition is false. Now the compiler
1545 correctly emits bytecode for the "else" suite.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +00001546
Guido van Rossumeead05f2008-01-24 18:21:02 +00001547- A few crashers fixed: weakref_in_del.py (issue #1377858);

Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +00001726- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
1727 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
1728 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the
1729 other one is. For backwards compatibility, when both are
1730 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +00001731 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
1732 as supported by type.__new__().
