10*Release date: XX-Aug-2008*
11
12Core and Builtins
13-----------------
14
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +000015- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
16 ValueError consistently across platforms.
17
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +000018- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
19 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
20 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
21
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +000022- Apply security patches from Apple.
23
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +000024- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
25 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
26
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +000027- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
28 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
29
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +000030- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
31 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
32 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
33
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +000034- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
35 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
36 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
37 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
38 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
39 failed have been fixed.
40

42-------
43
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +000044- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
45 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
46 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
47
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +000048- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
49 the reload() built-in has been removed.
50
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +000051- Changed code in the following modules/packages to remove warnings raised
52 while running under the ``-3`` flag: aifc, asyncore, bdb, bsddb,
53 ConfigParser, cookielib, DocXMLRPCServer, email, filecmp, fileinput, inspect,
54 logging, modulefinder, pdb, pickle, profile, pstats, pydoc, re, rlcompleter,
Brett Cannon3f92bc62008-08-08 04:27:28 +000055 SimpleXMLRPCServer, shelve, socket, subprocess, sqlite3, tarfile, Tkinter,
Brett Cannon03446c42008-08-08 04:19:32 +000056 test.test_support, textwrap, threading, tokenize, traceback, urlparse,
57 wsgiref, xml, xmlrpclib.
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +000058
Lars Gustäbel727bd0b2008-08-02 11:26:39 +000059- Issue #3039: Fix tarfile.TarFileCompat.writestr() which always
60 raised an AttributeError.
61
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +000062- Issue #2523: Fix quadratic behaviour when read()ing a binary file without
Antoine Pitroude781a42008-08-09 12:43:23 +000063 asking for a specific length. This problem only affected files opened
64 using the new "io" module, not the built-in open() function.
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +000065
Mark Dickinsonfe84cce2008-07-27 06:39:07 +000066- Issue #3449: Update decimal module to use most recent specification
67 (v. 1.68) and tests (v. 2.58) from IBM.
68
Skip Montanarof9ac43f2008-07-27 00:50:41 +000069- Issue 3437: Bug fix in robotparser parsing of Allow: lines.
70
Raymond Hettinger8c664e82008-07-25 18:43:33 +000071- Issue 1592: Improve error reporting when operations are attempted
72 on a closed shelf.
73
Georg Brandlf9efabb2008-07-23 15:16:45 +000074- Deprecate the "ast" parser function aliases.
75
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +000076- Issue #3120: On 64-bit Windows the subprocess module was truncating handles.
77
78- Issue #3303: Fix a crash in locale.strcoll() when calling it with
79 invalid arguments.
80
81- Issue #3302: Fix several crashes when calling locale's gettext functions
82 with None arguments.
83
84- Issue #3389: Allow resolving dotted names for handlers in logging
85 configuration files.
86
87- Deprecate the sunaudio module for removal in Python 3.0.
88
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +000089- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a
90 file name rather than a ZipInfo instance, so files are extracted with
91 mode 0600 rather than 000 under Unix.
92
Gregory P. Smitha36f8fe2008-08-04 00:13:29 +000093- Issue #1857: subprocess.Popen.poll gained an additional _deadstate keyword
94 argument in python 2.5, this broke code that subclassed Popen to include its
95 own poll method. Fixed my moving _deadstate to an _internal_poll method.
96
Martin v. Löwis8dbf3642008-08-01 14:10:26 +000097Build
98-----
99
100- Generate the PatternGrammar pickle during "make install".
101
Nick Coghlan2a0c2b12008-08-04 12:47:17 +0000102Documentation
103-------------
104
105- Issue #643841: The language reference now provides more detailed
106 coverage of the lookup process for special methods. The disclaimers
107 regarding lack of coverage of new-style classes have also been
108 removed, since the coverage is now fairly reasonable.
109

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000114*Release date: 17-Jul-2008*
115
Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000116Core and Builtins
117-----------------
118
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000119- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
120 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
121 an integer using operator.index().
122
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000123- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
124 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
125
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000126- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
127 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
128
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000129- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
130 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
131 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
132
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000133- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
134 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
135 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
136 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
137 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
138 level.
139
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000140- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
141 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
142 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
143 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
144 all imports from that module to fail.
145
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000146- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
147 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
148 new-style classes.
149
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000150- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
151 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
152 another file in sys.stdout.
153
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000154- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
155 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
156 another thread's dictionary.
157
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000158- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
159 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
160 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
161 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
162 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
163 10, -1).
164
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000165- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
166 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
167 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000168
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000169- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
170 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
171 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +0000172
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000173Library
174-------

177
Jesse Noller7fb96402008-07-17 21:01:05 +0000178- Issue #3395: fix reference in test_multiprocessing to old debugInfo method
179

Raymond Hettinger3cd1e422008-07-10 14:03:19 +0000200
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000201- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
202 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000203 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000204 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
205 merged into trunk.
206
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +0000207- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().

221 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
222
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000223- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for
224 removal in Python 3.0 in favor of urllib2.urlopen().

Gregory P. Smith3b1e6b22008-07-07 04:31:58 +0000230 properly when raising an exception due to the bz2file being closed.
231 Prevents a deadlock.
232
Gregory P. Smithc4691ec2008-07-07 05:09:12 +0000233- Issue #3094: httplib.HTTPSConnection Host: headers no longer include the
234 redundant ":443" port number designation when the connection is using the
235 default https port (443).
236
Gregory P. Smithdb3409c2008-07-17 03:13:05 +0000237- Issue #874900: after an os.fork() call the threading module state is cleaned
238 up in the child process to prevent deadlock and report proper thread counts
239 if the new process uses the threading module.
240
Nick Coghlan38469e22008-07-13 12:23:47 +0000241Tests
242-----
243

245 and is now better documented. Explicit unit tests for this context manager
246 have been added to test_warnings.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000672- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
673 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
674 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
675 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
676 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
677 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
678 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
679 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

Barry Warsawba437742008-04-04 01:34:41 +0000739Tests
740-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000741
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000742- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
743 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
744 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
745 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
746 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
747 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
748 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
749 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
750 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
751 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
752 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
753 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
754 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
755 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
756 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
757 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
758 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
759 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
760 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
761 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
762
763 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
764 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
765 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
766 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
767 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
768 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
769 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
770 access to the underlying socket used.
771
772 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
773 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
774 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000775
776 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000777 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000778 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
779 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
780
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000781 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
782 suite to run in parallel without issue.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc9a0d3462008-03-23 09:55:29 +0000836- Issue #1477: With narrow Unicode builds, the unicode escape sequence
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000837 \Uxxxxxxxx did not accept values outside the Basic Multilingual

1060
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001061- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1062 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1063 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1064 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1065 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1066 module is:
1067 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1068
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001069- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1070 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1071 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1072 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1073 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1074 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1075
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001076- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new

1080 PyObject_Format().
1081
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001082- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1083 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1084 state.

1094 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1095 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001096
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001097- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a

1113 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +00001114

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001127- Patch #1473257: generator objects gain a gi_code attribute. This is
1128 the same object as the func_code attribute of the function that
1129 produced the generator.
Georg Brandl0cdf9a32008-01-26 14:14:20 +00001130
