Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +000013- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
14 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
15 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
16 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
17 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
18 10, -1).

357 - ``--with-universal-archs=all``: install 4-way universal
358
359 - ``--with-universal-archs=32-bit``: install 2-way universal, 32-bit (the default)

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000415- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
416 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
417 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
418 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
419 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
420 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
421 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support

483-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000484
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000485- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
486 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
487 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
488 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
489 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
490 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
491 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
492 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
493 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
494 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
495 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
496 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
497 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
498 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
499 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
500 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
501 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
502 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
503 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
504 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
505
506 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
507 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
508 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
509 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
510 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
511 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
512 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
513 access to the underlying socket used.
514
515 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
516 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
517 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000518
519 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000520 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000521 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
522 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
523
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000524 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
525 suite to run in parallel without issue.

Georg Brandl80055f62008-03-25 07:56:27 +0000577- Issue #2355: add Py3k warning for buffer().
578
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc9a0d3462008-03-23 09:55:29 +0000579- Issue #1477: With narrow Unicode builds, the unicode escape sequence
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000580 \Uxxxxxxxx did not accept values outside the Basic Multilingual
581 Plane. This affected raw unicode literals and the
582 'raw-unicode-escape' codec. Now UTF-16 surrogates are generated in
583 this case, like normal unicode literals and the 'unicode-escape'
584 codec.

798
799- Patch #1759: Backport of PEP 3129 class decorators.
Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +0000800
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000801- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +0000802 issue 215555 for a discussion.
803
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +0000804- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
805 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
806 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
807 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
808 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
809 module is:
810 from future_builtins import hex, oct
811
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +0000812- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
813 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
814 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
815 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
816 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
817 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
818
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +0000819- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
820 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
821 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
822 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
823 PyObject_Format().
824
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000825- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
826 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
827 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +0000828
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000829- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also

831 a slot on a registered virtual subclass.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc60d6c7f2008-02-15 21:22:45 +0000832
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000833- Fixed repr() and str() of complex numbers with infinity or nan as
834 real or imaginary part.
Christian Heimes2f0da532008-02-15 06:57:08 +0000835
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000836- Clear all free lists during a gc.collect() of the highest generation
837 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
838 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +0000839
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000840- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
841 subclass of collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set
