267Core and builtins
268-----------------
269
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000270- Unicode objects will no longer raise an exception when being
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000271 compared equal or unequal to a string and a UnicodeDecodeError
272 exception occurs, e.g. as result of a decoding failure.
Neal Norwitz56423e52006-08-13 18:11:08 +0000273
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000274 Instead, the equal (==) and unequal (!=) comparison operators will
275 now issue a UnicodeWarning and interpret the two objects as
276 unequal. The UnicodeWarning can be filtered as desired using
277 the warning framework, e.g. silenced completely, turned into an
278 exception, logged, etc.
279
280 Note that compare operators other than equal and unequal will still
281 raise UnicodeDecodeError exceptions as they've always done.
Neal Norwitz8a87f5d2006-08-12 17:03:09 +0000282
Marc-André Lemburg757ea272006-08-14 11:44:34 +0000283- Fix segfault when doing string formatting on subclasses of long.
284

286 with new-style classes.
287
288- Fix bug related to __len__ functions returning negative values with
289 classic classes.
290
291- Patch #1538606, Fix __index__() clipping. There were some problems
292 discovered with the API and how integers that didn't fit into Py_ssize_t
293 were handled. This patch attempts to provide enough alternatives
294 to effectively use __index__.
295
Martin v. Löwisab2f8f72006-08-09 07:57:39 +0000296- Bug #1536021: __hash__ may now return long int; the final hash
297 value is obtained by invoking hash on the long int.
298
Thomas Hellerab1049c2006-08-08 17:37:00 +0000299- Bug #1536786: buffer comparison could emit a RuntimeWarning.

302 sys.stdin is closed.
303
Thomas Heller74d36f02006-08-04 18:17:40 +0000304- On Windows, the PyErr_Warn function is now exported from
305 the Python dll again.
306
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000307- Bug #1191458: tracing over for loops now produces a line event
308 on each iteration. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc
309 magic number. This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5c1
310 will be regenerated.
311
Neal Norwitz0cbd8052006-08-04 05:09:28 +0000312- Bug #1333982: string/number constants were inappropriately stored
313 in the byte code and co_consts even if they were not used, ie
314 immediately popped off the stack.
315

324
Marc-André Lemburg574cfea2006-08-16 16:11:01 +0000325- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0. The change to

430Core and builtins
431-----------------
432
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000433- _PyWeakref_GetWeakrefCount() now returns a Py_ssize_t; it previously
Neal Norwitzc5e060d2006-08-02 06:14:22 +0000434 returned a long (see PEP 353).
435
Neal Norwitzf71ec5a2006-07-30 06:57:04 +0000436- Bug #1515471: string.replace() accepts character buffers again.
437
Neal Norwitz07aadb12006-07-30 06:55:48 +0000438- Add PyErr_WarnEx() so C code can pass the stacklevel to warnings.warn().
439 This provides the proper warning for struct.pack().
440 PyErr_Warn() is now deprecated in favor of PyErr_WarnEx().
441
Neal Norwitz0d62a062006-07-30 06:53:31 +0000442- Patch #1531113: Fix augmented assignment with yield expressions.
443 Also fix a SystemError when trying to assign to yield expressions.
444
Phillip J. Ebyf7575d02006-07-28 21:12:07 +0000445- Bug #1529871: The speed enhancement patch #921466 broke Python's compliance
446 with PEP 302. This was fixed by adding an ``imp.NullImporter`` type that is
447 used in ``sys.path_importer_cache`` to cache non-directory paths and avoid
448 excessive filesystem operations during imports.
449
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +0000450- Bug #1521947: When checking for overflow, ``PyOS_strtol()`` used some
451 operations on signed longs that are formally undefined by C.
452 Unfortunately, at least one compiler now cares about that, so complicated
453 the code to make that compiler happy again.
454
Martin v. Löwis982e9fe2006-07-24 12:54:17 +0000455- Bug #1524310: Properly report errors from FindNextFile in os.listdir.

466
Georg Brandl9dceedb2006-07-12 15:31:17 +0000467- Patch #1521179: Python now accepts the standard options ``--help`` and
468 ``--version`` as well as ``/?`` on Windows.
469
Andrew M. Kuchling93c928e2006-07-26 17:19:39 +0000470- Bug #1520864: unpacking singleton tuples in a 'for' loop (for x, in) works
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000471 again. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc magic number.
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000472 This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5b3 will be regenerated.

Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000474- Bug #1524317: Compiling Python ``--without-threads`` failed.
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000475 The Python core compiles again, and, in a build without threads, the
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000476 new ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dictionary with one entry,

486 for stream decoder, but final=True for the decode function.
487
Georg Brandl07fec3a2006-08-01 18:49:24 +0000488- os.urandom no longer masks unrelated exceptions like SystemExit or

493
Georg Brandle34ac7c2006-07-30 11:07:23 +0000494- Bug #1002398: The documentation for os.path.sameopenfile now correctly
495 refers to file descriptors, not file objects.
496
Tim Petersc10c9d02006-09-05 02:18:09 +0000497- The renaming of the xml package to xmlcore, and the import hackery done
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000498 to make it appear at both names, has been removed. Bug #1511497,
Fred Drakefbdeaad2006-07-29 16:56:15 +0000499 #1513611, and probably others.
500
Georg Brandledd9b0d2006-07-29 09:33:26 +0000501- Bug #1441397: The compiler module now recognizes module and function
502 docstrings correctly as it did in Python 2.4.
503
Tim Peters6f681472006-07-27 23:44:37 +0000504- Bug #1529297: The rewrite of doctest for Python 2.4 unintentionally
505 lost that tests are sorted by name before being run. This rarely
506 matters for well-written tests, but can create baffling symptoms if
507 side effects from one test to the next affect outcomes. ``DocTestFinder``
508 has been changed to sort the list of tests it returns.
509
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000510- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0, and is now kept

520
Martin v. Löwis0b483032006-07-25 09:53:12 +0000521- Bug #1525817: Don't truncate short lines in IDLE's tool tips.

Georg Brandlc13c34c2006-07-24 14:09:56 +0000523- Patch #1515343: Fix printing of deprecated string exceptions with a
524 value in the traceback module.
525
Greg Ward48fae7a2006-07-23 16:05:51 +0000526- Resync optparse with Optik 1.5.3: minor tweaks for/to tests.
527
Martin v. Löwis426f4a12006-07-18 17:46:31 +0000528- Patch #1524429: Use repr() instead of backticks in Tkinter again.
529
Brett Cannoncaebe222006-07-18 04:41:36 +0000530- Bug #1520914: Change time.strftime() to accept a zero for any position in its
531 argument tuple. For arguments where zero is illegal, the value is forced to
532 the minimum value that is correct. This is to support an undocumented but
533 common way people used to fill in inconsequential information in the time
534 tuple pre-2.4.
535
Bob Ippolito5ea4bf12006-07-15 16:53:15 +0000536- Patch #1220874: Update the binhex module for Mach-O.
537
Barry Warsawb110bad2006-07-21 14:51:07 +0000538- The email package has improved RFC 2231 support, specifically for
539 recognizing the difference between encoded (name*0*=<blah>) and non-encoded
540 (name*0=<blah>) parameter continuations. This may change the types of
541 values returned from email.message.Message.get_param() and friends.
542 Specifically in some cases where non-encoded continuations were used,
543 get_param() used to return a 3-tuple of (None, None, string) whereas now it
544 will just return the string (since non-encoded continuations don't have
545 charset and language parts).
546
547 Also, whereas % values were decoded in all parameter continuations, they are
548 now only decoded in encoded parameter parts.
549
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +0000550- Bug #1517990: IDLE keybindings on MacOS X now work correctly
551
552- Bug #1517996: IDLE now longer shows the default Tk menu when a
553 path browser, class browser or debugger is the frontmost window on MacOS X
554
Barry Warsaw00decd72006-07-27 23:43:15 +0000555- Patch #1520294: Support for getset and member descriptors in types.py,
556 inspect.py, and pydoc.py. Specifically, this allows for querying the type
557 of an object against these built-in types and more importantly, for getting
558 their docstrings printed in the interactive interpreter's help() function.

Tim Peters9cab5932006-07-28 00:30:00 +0000571- The ``__reduce__()`` method of the new ``collections.defaultdict`` had

581 arrays, without the need to check the array size before.
582
Thomas Heller6e1ad2e2006-07-13 17:05:13 +0000583- Bug #1521375: When the code in ctypes.util.find_library was

Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000589
Thomas Hellerb4dc2ef2006-07-13 09:53:47 +0000590- Because of a misspelled preprocessor symbol, ctypes was always

605 (exact time) +/- 10% instead of the hard-coded 3.1 sec.
606
Georg Brandl4793aa32006-07-28 18:31:39 +0000607- Patch #1529686: The standard tests ``test_defaultdict``, ``test_iterlen``,
608 ``test_uuid`` and ``test_email_codecs`` didn't actually run any tests when
609 run via ``regrtest.py``. Now they do.

619- PythonLauncher now works correctly when the path to the script contains
620 characters that are treated specially by the shell (such as quotes).
621
622- Bug #1527397: PythonLauncher now launches scripts with the working directory
623 set to the directory that contains the script instead of the user home
Tim Peters4643c2f2006-08-10 22:45:34 +0000624 directory. That latter was an implementation accident and not what users

635
Neil Schemenauer6ec6ab02006-07-09 21:19:29 +0000636- Bug #1441486: The literal representation of -(sys.maxint - 1)
637 again evaluates to a int object, not a long.
638
Neil Schemenauer0e07b602006-07-09 16:16:34 +0000639- Bug #1501934: The scope of global variables that are locally assigned
640 using augmented assignment is now correctly determined.
641
Martin v. Löwisd5cfa542006-07-03 13:47:40 +0000642- Bug #927248: Recursive method-wrapper objects can now safely
643 be released.
644
Martin v. Löwisfcfff0a2006-07-03 12:19:50 +0000645- Bug #1417699: Reject locale-specific decimal point in float()
646 and atof().
647
Hye-Shik Change6a1cb92006-06-23 21:16:18 +0000648- Bug #1511381: codec_getstreamcodec() in codec.c is corrected to
649 omit a default "error" argument for NULL pointer. This allows
650 the parser to take a codec from cjkcodecs again.
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +0000651
Neal Norwitzfb48afa2006-07-08 05:31:37 +0000652- Bug #1519018: 'as' is now validated properly in import statements.
653
Neal Norwitz28746ab2006-07-09 22:14:42 +0000654- On 64 bit systems, int literals that use less than 64 bits are
655 now ints rather than longs.
656
Neal Norwitzed657552006-07-10 00:04:44 +0000657- Bug #1512814, Fix incorrect lineno's when code at module scope
658 started after line 256.
659
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +0000660- New function ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dict mapping thread
661 id to topmost thread stack frame. This is for expert use, and is
662 especially useful for debugging application deadlocks. The functionality
663 was previously available in Fazal Majid's ``threadframe`` extension
664 module, but it wasn't possible to do this in a wholly threadsafe way from
665 an extension.

682
Thomas Woutersadd19112006-07-05 11:03:49 +0000683- string.Template() now correctly handles tuple-values. Previously,
684 multi-value tuples would raise an exception and single-value tuples would
685 be treated as the value they contain, instead.
686
Martin v. Löwisede77f52006-07-03 13:01:35 +0000687- Bug #822974: Honor timeout in telnetlib.{expect,read_until}

703 socket again, which then gets closed as it becomes unreferenced.
704
Fred Drake10497c82006-06-29 02:57:48 +0000705- Bug #1504333: Make sgmllib support angle brackets in quoted
706 attribute values.
707
708- Bug #853506: Fix IPv6 address parsing in unquoted attributes in

Georg Brandl1be63af2006-06-28 20:23:25 +0000711- Fix a bug in the turtle module's end_fill function.
712
Brett Cannon53ab5b72006-06-22 16:49:14 +0000713- Bug #1510580: The 'warnings' module improperly required that a Warning
714 category be either a types.ClassType and a subclass of Warning. The proper
715 check is just that it is a subclass with Warning as the documentation states.
716
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +0000717- The compiler module now correctly compiles the new try-except-finally
718 statement (bug #1509132).
719
Neal Norwitz60373cd2006-06-22 06:30:50 +0000720- The wsgiref package is now installed properly on Unix.

723 shutdown when fileConfig() was called multiple times.
724
Gerhard Häring762fbd32006-07-02 17:48:30 +0000725- The sqlite3 module did cut off data from the SQLite database at the first
726 null character before sending it to a custom converter. This has been fixed
727 now.
728
Neal Norwitz0f8b31a2006-06-28 06:28:31 +0000729Extension Modules
730-----------------
731
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000732- #1494314: Fix a regression with high-numbered sockets in 2.4.3. This
733 means that select() on sockets > FD_SETSIZE (typically 1024) work again.
734 The patch makes sockets use poll() internally where available.
Anthony Baxter93ab5fa2006-07-11 02:04:09 +0000735
Thomas Hellerb9cb84f2006-07-10 11:17:37 +0000736- Assigning None to pointer type fields in ctypes structures possible
737 overwrote the wrong fields, this is fixed now.
738
739- Fixed a segfault in _ctypes when ctypes.wintypes were imported
740 on non-Windows platforms.
741
742- Bug #1518190: The ctypes.c_void_p constructor now accepts any
743 integer or long, without range checking.
744
745- Patch #1517790: It is now possible to use custom objects in the ctypes
746 foreign function argtypes sequence as long as they provide a from_param
747 method, no longer is it required that the object is a ctypes type.
748
749- The '_ctypes' extension module now works when Python is configured
750 with the --without-threads option.
751
Martin v. Löwisee1e06d2006-07-02 18:44:00 +0000752- Bug #1513646: os.access on Windows now correctly determines write
753 access, again.
754
Neal Norwitz0f8b31a2006-06-28 06:28:31 +0000755- Bug #1512695: cPickle.loads could crash if it was interrupted with
756 a KeyboardInterrupt.
757
Neal Norwitza12aa882006-07-06 06:45:08 +0000758- Bug #1296433: parsing XML with a non-default encoding and

767
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +0000768- 'configure' now detects the zlib library the same way as distutils.
Thomas Woutersfc34f6c2006-07-06 10:48:28 +0000769 Previously, the slight difference could cause compilation errors of the
770 'zlib' module on systems with more than one version of zlib.
771
Martin v. Löwis4cbd05c2006-07-06 07:05:21 +0000772- The MSI compileall step was fixed to also support a TARGETDIR
773 with spaces in it.
774
Martin v. Löwis88ef6372006-07-06 06:55:58 +0000775- Bug #1517388: sqlite3.dll is now installed on Windows independent
776 of Tcl/Tk.
777
Neal Norwitzc315a0f2006-06-27 04:28:56 +0000778- Bug #1513032: 'make install' failed on FreeBSD 5.3 due to lib-old

804-----------------
805
Georg Brandla56b9152006-06-19 06:35:54 +0000806- Patch #1507676: Error messages returned by invalid abstract object operations
807 (such as iterating over an integer) have been improved and now include the
808 type of the offending object to help with debugging.
809
Brett Cannonea3912b2006-06-13 21:46:41 +0000810- Bug #992017: A classic class that defined a __coerce__() method that returned
811 its arguments swapped would infinitely recurse and segfault the interpreter.
812
Neal Norwitz909eb122006-06-12 02:13:21 +0000813- Fix the socket tests so they can be run concurrently.
814
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +0000815- Removed 5 integers from C frame objects (PyFrameObject).
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +0000816 f_nlocals, f_ncells, f_nfreevars, f_stack_size, f_restricted.
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +0000817
Brett Cannon22565aa2006-06-09 22:31:23 +0000818- Bug #532646: object.__call__() will continue looking for the __call__
819 attribute on objects until one without one is found. This leads to recursion
820 when you take a class and set its __call__ attribute to an instance of the
821 class. Originally fixed for classic classes, but this fix is for new-style.
822 Removes the infinite_rec_3 crasher.
823
Georg Brandl24250812006-06-09 18:45:48 +0000824- The string and unicode methods startswith() and endswith() now accept
825 a tuple of prefixes/suffixes to look for. Implements RFE #1491485.
826
Brett Cannonde3b0522006-06-08 17:00:45 +0000827- Buffer objects, at the C level, never used the char buffer
828 implementation even when the char buffer for the wrapped object was
829 explicitly requested (originally returned the read or write buffer).
830 Now a TypeError is raised if the char buffer is not present but is
831 requested.
832
Georg Brandlddbaa662006-06-04 21:56:52 +0000833- Patch #1346214: Statements like "if 0: suite" are now again optimized
834 away like they were in Python 2.4.
835
Georg Brandlb7c8f542006-05-27 12:30:25 +0000836- Builtin exceptions are now full-blown new-style classes instead of
837 instances pretending to be classes, which speeds up exception handling
838 by about 80% in comparison to 2.5a2.
839
Martin v. Löwisd004fc82006-05-27 08:36:52 +0000840- Patch #1494554: Update unicodedata.numeric and unicode.isnumeric to
841 Unicode 4.1.
842
Georg Brandlf4ef1162006-05-26 18:03:31 +0000843- Patch #921466: sys.path_importer_cache is now used to cache valid and
844 invalid file paths for the built-in import machinery which leads to
845 fewer open calls on startup.
846
Tim Peters696cf432006-05-24 21:10:40 +0000847- Patch #1442927: ``long(str, base)`` is now up to 6x faster for non-power-
848 of-2 bases. The largest speedup is for inputs with about 1000 decimal
849 digits. Conversion from non-power-of-2 bases remains quadratic-time in
850 the number of input digits (it was and remains linear-time for bases
851 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32).
852
Tim Petersb713ec22006-05-23 18:45:30 +0000853- Bug #1334662: ``int(string, base)`` could deliver a wrong answer
854 when ``base`` was not 2, 4, 8, 10, 16 or 32, and ``string`` represented
855 an integer close to ``sys.maxint``. This was repaired by patch
856 #1335972, which also gives a nice speedup.
857
Richard Jonescebbefc2006-05-23 18:28:17 +0000858- Patch #1337051: reduced size of frame objects.
859
860- PyErr_NewException now accepts a tuple of base classes as its
861 "base" parameter.
862
Richard Jones7c88dcc2006-05-23 10:37:38 +0000863- Patch #876206: function call speedup by retaining allocated frame
864 objects.
865
Georg Brandl7b90e162006-05-18 07:01:27 +0000866- Bug #1462152: file() now checks more thoroughly for invalid mode
867 strings and removes a possible "U" before passing the mode to the
868 C library function.
869
Neal Norwitz1004a532006-05-15 07:17:23 +0000870- Patch #1488312, Fix memory alignment problem on SPARC in unicode
871
Neal Norwitz373f0a72006-05-15 07:04:36 +0000872- Bug #1487966: Fix SystemError with conditional expression in assignment
873
Martin v. Löwis879768d2006-05-11 13:28:43 +0000874- WindowsError now has two error code attributes: errno, which carries
875 the error values from errno.h, and winerror, which carries the error
876 values from winerror.h. Previous versions put the winerror.h values
877 (from GetLastError()) into the errno attribute.
878
Martin v. Löwis77736712006-05-04 05:51:03 +0000879- Patch #1475845: Raise IndentationError for unexpected indent.
880
Neal Norwitzc4edb0e2006-05-02 04:43:14 +0000881- Patch #1479181: split open() and file() from being aliases for each other.
882
Tim Peters44bd9862006-06-01 13:49:23 +0000883- Patch #1497053 & bug #1275608: Exceptions occurring in ``__eq__()``
884 methods were always silently ignored by dictionaries when comparing keys.
885 They are now passed through (except when using the C API function
886 ``PyDict_GetItem()``, whose semantics did not change).
887
888- Bug #1456209: In some obscure cases it was possible for a class with a
889 custom ``__eq__()`` method to confuse dict internals when class instances
890 were used as a dict's keys and the ``__eq__()`` method mutated the dict.
891 No, you don't have any code that did this ;-)

898- Patch #1462338: Upgrade pyexpat to expat 2.0.0
899
Brett Cannon6ee7d012006-06-08 16:23:04 +0000900- Change binascii.hexlify to accept a read-only buffer instead of only a char
901 buffer and actually follow its documentation.
902

904
Nick Coghlanc649ec52006-05-29 12:43:05 +0000905- Patch #1478788 (modified version): The functional extension module has
906 been renamed to _functools and a functools Python wrapper module added.
907 This provides a home for additional function related utilities that are
908 not specifically about functional programming. See PEP 309.
909

928 Windows platforms).
929
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +0000930- Calling Tk_Init twice is refused if the first call failed as that
931 may deadlock.
932
Gregory P. Smith0459e4d2006-06-05 02:02:25 +0000933- bsddb: added the DB_ARCH_REMOVE flag and fixed db.DBEnv.log_archive() to
934 accept it without potentially using an uninitialized pointer.
935
936- bsddb: added support for the DBEnv.log_stat() and DBEnv.lsn_reset() methods

944 parameter is supplied. [SF pybsddb bug #1477863]
945
Gregory P. Smith3c228b12006-06-05 23:59:37 +0000946- bsddb: the __len__ method of a DB object has been fixed to return correct
947 results. It could previously incorrectly return 0 in some cases.
948 Fixes SF bug 1493322 (pybsddb bug 1184012).
949
Gregory P. Smithff7d9912006-06-08 05:17:08 +0000950- bsddb: the bsddb.dbtables Modify method now raises the proper error and
951 aborts the db transaction safely when a modifier callback fails.

990 guarantee that adjacent triples in the return list always describe
991 non-adjacent blocks. Previously, a pair of matching blocks could end
992 up being described by multiple adjacent triples that formed a partition
993 of the matching pair.

1013 for lookup.
1014
Tim Petersd609b1a2006-06-02 23:22:51 +00001015- The functions in the ``pprint`` module now sort dictionaries by key
1016 before computing the display. Before 2.5, ``pprint`` sorted a dictionary
1017 if and only if its display required more than one line, although that
1018 wasn't documented. The new behavior increases predictability; e.g.,
1019 using ``pprint.pprint(a_dict)`` in a doctest is now reliable.

1040
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00001041- Patch #721464: pdb.Pdb instances can now be given explicit stdin and

1097-----------------
1098
Thomas Heller1b046642006-04-18 18:51:06 +00001099- Bug #1465834: 'bdist_wininst preinstall script support' was fixed
1100 by converting these apis from macros into exported functions again:
1101
1102 PyParser_SimpleParseFile PyParser_SimpleParseString PyRun_AnyFile
1103 PyRun_AnyFileEx PyRun_AnyFileFlags PyRun_File PyRun_FileEx
1104 PyRun_FileFlags PyRun_InteractiveLoop PyRun_InteractiveOne

1106 PyRun_String Py_CompileString
1107
Martin v. Löwis45294a92006-04-18 06:24:08 +00001108- Under COUNT_ALLOCS, types are not necessarily immortal anymore.
1109
Martin v. Löwis19ab6c92006-04-16 18:55:50 +00001110- All uses of PyStructSequence_InitType have been changed to initialize
1111 the type objects only once, even if the interpreter is initialized
1112 multiple times.
1113
Neal Norwitz61546162006-04-14 05:20:28 +00001114- Bug #1454485, array.array('u') could crash the interpreter. This was
1115 due to PyArgs_ParseTuple(args, 'u#', ...) trying to convert buffers (strings)
1116 to unicode when it didn't make sense. 'u#' now requires a unicode string.
1117
1118- Py_UNICODE is unsigned. It was always documented as unsigned, but
1119 due to a bug had a signed value in previous versions.
1120
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001121- Patch #837242: ``id()`` of any Python object always gives a positive
1122 number now, which might be a long integer. ``PyLong_FromVoidPtr`` and
1123 ``PyLong_AsVoidPtr`` have been changed accordingly. Note that it has
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001124 never been correct to implement a ``__hash()__`` method that returns the
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001125 ``id()`` of an object:
Martin v. Löwis0bc2ab92006-04-10 20:28:17 +00001126
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001127 def __hash__(self):
1128 return id(self) # WRONG
1129
1130 because a hash result must be a (short) Python int but it was always
1131 possible for ``id()`` to return a Python long. However, because ``id()``
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001132 could return negative values before, on a 32-bit box an ``id()`` result
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001133 was always usable as a hash value before this patch. That's no longer
1134 necessarily so.
1135
1136- Python on OS X 10.3 and above now uses dlopen() (via dynload_shlib.c)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001137 to load extension modules and now provides the dl module. As a result,
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001138 sys.setdlopenflags() now works correctly on these systems. (SF patch
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001139 #1454844)
1140
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001141- Patch #1463867: enhanced garbage collection to allow cleanup of cycles
1142 involving generators that have paused outside of any ``try`` or ``with``
1143 blocks. (In 2.5a1, a paused generator that was part of a reference
1144 cycle could not be garbage collected, regardless of whether it was
1145 paused in a ``try`` or ``with`` block.)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001146
Anthony Baxter51bcb682006-04-05 14:51:42 +00001147Extension Modules

1152
Georg Brandlbbfe4fa2006-04-11 06:47:43 +00001153- Bug #1467952: os.listdir() now correctly raises an error if readdir()

1159 the cachesize parameter.
1160
1161- Bug #1149413: bsddb.*open() no longer raises an exception when using
1162 a temporary db (file=None) with the 'n' flag to truncate on open.
1163
1164- Bug #1332852: bsddb module minimum BerkeleyDB version raised to 3.3
1165 as older versions cause excessive test failures.
Gregory P. Smith7f5b6f42006-04-08 07:10:51 +00001166
Armin Rigoa9017c32006-04-19 11:50:27 +00001167- Patch #1062014: AF_UNIX sockets under Linux have a special

1175 abusing errno.
1176
Tim Peters711bf302006-04-25 03:31:36 +00001177- Patch #1475231: ``doctest`` has a new ``SKIP`` option, which causes

1179 or exception is ignored).
1180
Nick Coghlanda2268f2006-04-24 04:37:15 +00001181- Fixed contextlib.nested to cope with exceptions being raised and
1182 caught inside exit handlers.
1183
Greg Wardab05edc2006-04-23 03:47:58 +00001184- Updated optparse module to Optik 1.5.1 (allow numeric constants in
1185 hex, octal, or binary; add ``append_const`` action; keep going if
1186 gettext cannot be imported; added ``OptionParser.destroy()`` method;
1187 added ``epilog`` for better help generation).
1188
Tim Peters21fbd572006-04-21 21:18:10 +00001189- Bug #1473760: ``tempfile.TemporaryFile()`` could hang on Windows, when
1190 called from a thread spawned as a side effect of importing a module.
1191
Phillip J. Eby17a35f92006-04-18 16:45:14 +00001192- The pydoc module now supports documenting packages contained in
1193 .zip or .egg files.
1194
1195- The pkgutil module now has several new utility functions, such
1196 as ``walk_packages()`` to support working with packages that are either
1197 in the filesystem or zip files.
1198
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001199- The mailbox module can now modify and delete messages from
1200 mailboxes, in addition to simply reading them. Thanks to Gregory
1201 K. Johnson for writing the code, and to the 2005 Google Summer of
1202 Code for funding his work.
Phillip J. Eby17a35f92006-04-18 16:45:14 +00001203
Tim Petersc7605f22006-04-17 21:12:33 +00001204- The ``__del__`` method of class ``local`` in module ``_threading_local``
1205 returned before accomplishing any of its intended cleanup.
1206

Nick Coghlan27ec1a72006-04-24 04:32:47 +00001259- test_cmd_line now checks operation of the -m and -c command switches
1260
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001261- The test_contextlib test in 2.5a1 wasn't actually run unless you ran
1262 it separately and by hand. It also wasn't cleaning up its changes to
1263 the current Decimal context.
1264
Thomas Woutersabd08882006-04-26 15:53:30 +00001265- regrtest.py now has a -M option to run tests that test the new limits of
1266 containers, on 64-bit architectures. Running these tests is only sensible
1267 on 64-bit machines with more than two gigabytes of memory. The argument
1268 passed is the maximum amount of memory for the tests to use.

1295-----------------
1296
Nick Coghlan43832302006-04-23 17:04:07 +00001297- PEP 338: -m command line switch now delegates to runpy.run_module
1298 allowing it to support modules in packages and zipfiles
1299
Martin v. Löwisc661b882006-04-20 04:54:23 +00001300- On Windows, .DLL is not an accepted file name extension for
1301 extension modules anymore; extensions are only found if they
1302 end in .PYD.
1303
Martin v. Löwisea62d252006-04-03 10:56:49 +00001304- Bug #1421664: sys.stderr.encoding is now set to the same value as
1305 sys.stdout.encoding.
1306
Neal Norwitz92e212f2006-04-03 04:48:37 +00001307- __import__ accepts keyword arguments.
1308
Georg Brandlccadf842006-03-31 18:54:53 +00001309- Patch #1460496: round() now accepts keyword arguments.
1310
Anthony Baxter262c00a2006-03-30 10:53:17 +00001311- Fixed bug #1459029 - unicode reprs were double-escaped.
1312
Hye-Shik Changd478f342006-03-23 12:32:36 +00001313- Patch #1396919: The system scope threads are reenabled on FreeBSD
1314 5.4 and later versions.
1315
Neal Norwitze98ccf62006-03-23 05:39:47 +00001316- Bug #1115379: Compiling a Unicode string with an encoding declaration
1317 now gives a SyntaxError.
1318
Georg Brandlabd1ff82006-03-18 07:59:59 +00001319- Previously, Python code had no easy way to access the contents of a
1320 cell object. Now, a ``cell_contents`` attribute has been added
1321 (closes patch #1170323).
1322
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001323- Patch #1123430: Python's small-object allocator now returns an arena to
1324 the system ``free()`` when all memory within an arena becomes unused
1325 again. Prior to Python 2.5, arenas (256KB chunks of memory) were never
1326 freed. Some applications will see a drop in virtual memory size now,
1327 especially long-running applications that, from time to time, temporarily
1328 use a large number of small objects. Note that when Python returns an
1329 arena to the platform C's ``free()``, there's no guarantee that the
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001330 platform C library will in turn return that memory to the operating system.
1331 The effect of the patch is to stop making that impossible, and in tests it
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001332 appears to be effective at least on Microsoft C and gcc-based systems.
1333 Thanks to Evan Jones for hard work and patience.
1334
Georg Brandl533ff6f2006-03-08 18:09:27 +00001335- Patch #1434038: property() now uses the getter's docstring if there is
1336 no "doc" argument given. This makes it possible to legitimately use
1337 property() as a decorator to produce a read-only property.
1338
Guido van Rossum9aa37ab2006-03-07 18:54:08 +00001339- PEP 357, patch 1436368: add an __index__ method to int/long and a matching
1340 nb_index slot to the PyNumberMethods struct. The slot is consulted instead
1341 of requiring an int or long in slicing and a few other contexts, enabling
1342 other objects (e.g. Numeric Python's integers) to be used as slice indices.
1343
Neal Norwitz995acdf2006-03-07 05:01:00 +00001344- Fixed various bugs reported by Coverity's Prevent tool.
1345
Brett Cannonbf364092006-03-01 04:25:17 +00001346- PEP 352, patch #1104669: Make exceptions new-style objects. Introduced the
1347 new exception base class, BaseException, which has a new message attribute.
1348 KeyboardInterrupt and SystemExit to directly inherit from BaseException now.
1349 Raising a string exception now raises a DeprecationWarning.
1350
Thomas Woutersfb609f42006-02-28 16:37:25 +00001351- Patch #1438387, PEP 328: relative and absolute imports. Imports can now be
1352 explicitly relative, using 'from .module import name' to mean 'from the same
1353 package as this module is in. Imports without dots still default to the
1354 old relative-then-absolute, unless 'from __future__ import
1355 absolute_import' is used.
1356
Brett Cannona7446e32006-02-27 23:39:10 +00001357- Properly check if 'warnings' raises an exception (usually when a filter set
1358 to "error" is triggered) when raising a warning for raising string
1359 exceptions.
1360
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001361- CO_GENERATOR_ALLOWED is no longer defined. This behavior is the default.
Neal Norwitz0023a2f2006-02-27 23:24:48 +00001362 The name was removed from Include/code.h.
1363
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001364- PEP 308: conditional expressions were added: (x if cond else y).
Neal Norwitzeb651252006-02-27 16:47:12 +00001365
Guido van Rossum1968ad32006-02-25 22:38:04 +00001366- Patch 1433928:
1367 - The copy module now "copies" function objects (as atomic objects).
1368 - dict.__getitem__ now looks for a __missing__ hook before raising
1369 KeyError.
1370
Tim Peters84ef21c2006-02-28 20:39:06 +00001371- PEP 343: with statement implemented. Needs ``from __future__ import
1372 with_statement``. Use of 'with' as a variable will generate a warning.
1373 Use of 'as' as a variable will also generate a warning (unless it's
Neal Norwitz055ec242006-02-28 20:06:49 +00001374 part of an import statement).
Guido van Rossum1a5e21e2006-02-28 21:57:43 +00001375 The following objects have __context__ methods:
1376 - The built-in file type.
1377 - The thread.LockType type.
1378 - The following types defined by the threading module:
1379 Lock, RLock, Condition, Semaphore, BoundedSemaphore.
1380 - The decimal.Context class.
Guido van Rossumc2e20742006-02-27 22:32:47 +00001381
Marc-André Lemburgfe4b34c2006-02-19 15:22:22 +00001382- Fix the encodings package codec search function to only search
1383 inside its own package. Fixes problem reported in patch #1433198.
1384
1385 Note: Codec packages should implement and register their own
1386 codec search function. PEP 100 has the details.
1387
Tim Peters9ea89d22006-06-04 03:26:02 +00001388- PEP 353: Using ``Py_ssize_t`` as the index type.
1389
1390- ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` builds now add ``4*sizeof(size_t)`` bytes of debugging
1391 info to each allocated block, since the ``Py_ssize_t`` changes (PEP 353)
1392 now allow Python to make use of memory blocks exceeding 2**32 bytes for
1393 some purposes on 64-bit boxes. A ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` build was limited
1394 to 4-byte allocations before.
Martin v. Löwis18e16552006-02-15 17:27:45 +00001395
Neal Norwitzfc76d632006-01-10 06:03:13 +00001396- Patch #1400181, fix unicode string formatting to not use the locale.
1397 This is how string objects work. u'%f' could use , instead of .
1398 for the decimal point. Now both strings and unicode always use periods.
1399
Neal Norwitz671b9e32006-01-09 07:07:12 +00001400- Bug #1244610, #1392915, fix build problem on OpenBSD 3.7 and 3.8.
1401 configure would break checking curses.h.
1402
Georg Brandlcd4d1e82005-12-27 17:37:07 +00001403- Bug #959576: The pwd module is now builtin. This allows Python to be
1404 built on UNIX platforms without $HOME set.
1405
Neal Norwitzc10978f2005-12-19 06:07:16 +00001406- Bug #1072182, fix some potential problems if characters are signed.
1407
Neal Norwitz5d0ad502005-12-19 04:27:42 +00001408- Bug #889500, fix line number on SyntaxWarning for global declarations.
1409
Neal Norwitzdb83eb32005-12-18 05:29:30 +00001410- Bug #1378022, UTF-8 files with a leading BOM crashed the interpreter.
1411
Neal Norwitze7214a12005-12-18 05:03:17 +00001412- Support for converting hex strings to floats no longer works.
1413 This was not portable. float('0x3') now raises a ValueError.
1414
Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001415- Patch #1382163: Expose Subversion revision number to Python. New C API

Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001417 is now displayed in interactive prompt banner.
1418
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00001419- Implementation of PEP 341 - Unification of try/except and try/finally.
1420 "except" clauses can now be written together with a "finally" clause in
Neal Norwitz11ca77e2005-12-17 22:24:12 +00001421 one try statement instead of two nested ones. Patch #1355913.

1430
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001431- SF Bug #1350188, "setdlopenflags" leads to crash upon "import"
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001432 It was possible for dlerror() to return a NULL pointer, so
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001433 it will now use a default error message in this case.
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001434
Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00001435- Replaced most Unicode charmap codecs with new ones using the
1436 new Unicode translate string feature in the builtin charmap
1437 codec; the codecs were created from the mapping tables available
1438 at ftp.unicode.org and contain a few updates (e.g. the Mac OS
1439 encodings now include a mapping for the Apple logo)
1440
Tim Peterse3547fd2005-12-16 23:13:57 +00001441- Added a few more codecs for Mac OS encodings

1460
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001461- All iterators now have a Boolean value of True. Formerly, some iterators
Raymond Hettinger6b27cda2005-09-24 21:23:05 +00001462 supported a __len__() method which evaluated to False when the iterator
1463 was empty.
1464
Guido van Rossum630db602005-09-20 18:49:54 +00001465- On 64-bit platforms, when __len__() returns a value that cannot be
1466 represented as a C int, raise OverflowError.
1467
Skip Montanarof8948ca2005-09-19 03:54:46 +00001468- test__locale is skipped on OS X < 10.4 (only partial locale support is

1490 own internal data structure. Memory consumption is reduced by 1/3
1491 and there are modest speed-ups as well. The API is unchanged.
1492
Tim Petersde7990b2005-07-17 23:45:23 +00001493- SF bug #1238681: freed pointer is used in longobject.c:long_pow().
1494
Michael W. Hudson0edc7a02005-07-12 10:21:19 +00001495- SF bug #1229429: PyObject_CallMethod failed to decrement some
1496 reference counts in some error exit cases.
1497
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001498- SF bug #1185883: Python's small-object memory allocator took over
1499 a block managed by the platform C library whenever a realloc specified
1500 a small new size. However, there's no portable way to know then how
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001501 much of the address space following the pointer is valid, so there's no
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001502 portable way to copy data from the C-managed block into Python's
1503 small-object space without risking a memory fault. Python's small-object
1504 realloc now leaves such blocks under the control of the platform C
1505 realloc.
1506
Michael W. Hudsonb8963812005-07-05 15:21:58 +00001507- SF bug #1232517: An overflow error was not detected properly when
1508 attempting to convert a large float to an int in os.utime().
1509
Raymond Hettinger3296e692005-06-29 23:29:56 +00001510- SF bug #1224347: hex longs now print with lowercase letters just
1511 like their int counterparts.
1512
Michael W. Hudson188d4362005-06-20 16:52:57 +00001513- SF bug #1163563: the original fix for bug #1010677 ("thread Module
1514 Breaks PyGILState_Ensure()") broke badly in the case of multiple
1515 interpreter states; back out that fix and do a better job (see
1516 http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-dev/2005-June/054258.html
1517 for a longer write-up of the problem).
1518
Michael W. Hudsondf888462005-06-03 14:41:55 +00001519- SF patch #1180995: marshal now uses a binary format by default when
1520 serializing floats.
1521
Michael W. Hudsonda85a902005-06-01 11:34:22 +00001522- SF patch #1181301: on platforms that appear to use IEEE 754 floats,
1523 the routines that promise to produce IEEE 754 binary representations
1524 of floats now simply copy bytes around.
1525
Skip Montanarobbf12ba2005-05-20 03:07:06 +00001526- bug #967182: disallow opening files with 'wU' or 'aU' as specified by PEP
1527 278.
1528
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001529- patch #1109424: int, long, float, complex, and unicode now check for the
1530 proper magic slot for type conversions when subclassed. Previously the
1531 magic slot was ignored during conversion. Semantics now match the way
1532 subclasses of str always behaved. int/long/float, conversion of an instance
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00001533 to the base class has been moved to the proper nb_* magic slot and out of
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001534 PyNumber_*().
Neal Norwitzcfba5f82006-04-25 05:05:03 +00001535 Thanks Walter Drwald.
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001536
Barry Warsawc8d907c2005-04-19 23:43:40 +00001537- Descriptors defined in C with a PyGetSetDef structure, where the setter is
1538 NULL, now raise an AttributeError when attempting to set or delete the
1539 attribute. Previously a TypeError was raised, but this was inconsistent
1540 with the equivalent pure-Python implementation.
1541
Michael W. Hudson774479c2005-04-18 08:46:17 +00001542- It is now safe to call PyGILState_Release() before
1543 PyEval_InitThreads() (note that if there is reason to believe there
1544 are multiple threads around you still must call PyEval_InitThreads()
1545 before using the Python API; this fix is for extension modules that
1546 have no way of knowing if Python is multi-threaded yet).
1547
Michael W. Hudsone3afc592005-04-07 10:11:19 +00001548- Typing Ctrl-C whilst raw_input() was waiting in a build with threads
1549 disabled caused a crash.
1550
Michael W. Hudsonb330adf2005-03-31 09:35:44 +00001551- Bug #1165306: instancemethod_new allowed the creation of a method
1552 with im_class == im_self == NULL, which caused a crash when called.
1553
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001554- Move exception finalisation later in the shutdown process - this
Anthony Baxter12b6f6c2005-03-29 13:36:16 +00001555 fixes the crash seen in bug #1165761

1558
Brett Cannon409d8f22005-03-05 06:47:57 +00001559- Defining a class with empty parentheses is now allowed
Brett Cannonf4189912005-04-09 02:30:16 +00001560 (e.g., ``class C(): pass`` is no longer a syntax error).
1561 Patch #1176012 added support to the 'parser' module and 'compiler' package
1562 (thanks to logistix for that added support).
Brett Cannon409d8f22005-03-05 06:47:57 +00001563

1575 inadvertently made inaccessible in restricted mode.
1576
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001577- Bug #1074011: closing sys.std{out,err} now causes a flush() and
Martin v. Löwis8e3ca8a2005-01-23 09:41:49 +00001578 an ferror() call.
1579
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00001580- min() and max() now support key= arguments with the same meaning as in

1587
Michael W. Hudsonfaa76482005-01-31 17:09:25 +00001588- Bug #1077106: Poor argument checking could cause memory corruption
1589 in calls to os.read().
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00001590
Jeremy Hyltonab630502005-02-04 18:44:06 +00001591- The parser did not complain about future statements in illegal
1592 positions. It once again reports a syntax error if a future
1593 statement occurs after anything other than a doc string.
1594
Neil Schemenauercf52c072005-08-12 17:34:58 +00001595- Change the %s format specifier for str objects so that it returns a
1596 unicode instance if the argument is not an instance of basestring and
1597 calling __str__ on the argument returns a unicode instance.
1598
Tim Petersf4e69282006-02-27 17:15:31 +00001599- Patch #1413181: changed ``PyThreadState_Delete()`` to forget about the
1600 current thread state when the auto-GIL-state machinery knows about
1601 it (since the thread state is being deleted, continuing to remember it
1602 can't help, but can hurt if another thread happens to get created with
1603 the same thread id).

Georg Brandl828fdef2006-04-01 08:59:03 +00001814 a DB-API interface in the standard library. You'll need sqlite 3.0.8 or
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001815 later to build this - if you have an earlier version, the C extension
Anthony Baxterc51ee692006-04-01 00:57:31 +00001816 module will not be built.

1841
Barry Warsaw4d90bbd2006-03-22 02:45:50 +00001842- email 4.0 package now integrated. This is largely the same as the email 3.0
1843 package that was included in Python 2.3, except that PEP 8 module names are
1844 now used (e.g. mail.message instead of email.Message). The MIME classes
1845 have been moved to a subpackage (e.g. email.mime.text instead of
1846 email.MIMEText). The old names are still supported for now. Several
1847 deprecated Message methods have been removed and lots of bugs have been

2062 instead of raising a TypeError when interacting with other types. This
2063 allows other classes to implement __radd__ style methods and have them
2064 work as expected.
2065
Raymond Hettingerbea3f6f2005-03-15 04:59:17 +00002066- Bug #1163325: Decimal infinities failed to hash. Attempting to

2122
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002123- Enhancements to the csv module:
2124
2125 + Dialects are now validated by the underlying C code, better
Georg Brandl7eb4b7d2005-07-22 21:49:32 +00002126 reflecting its capabilities, and improving its compliance with
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002127 PEP 305.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002128 + Dialect parameter parsing has been re-implemented to improve error
2129 reporting.
2130 + quotechar=None and quoting=QUOTE_NONE now work the way PEP 305
2131 dictates.
2132 + the parser now removes the escapechar prefix from escaped characters.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002133 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the writer now tests for numeric
Andrew M. Kuchling6db67822006-04-18 14:04:57 +00002134 types, rather than any object that can be represented as a numeric.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002135 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the reader now casts unquoted fields
2136 to floats.
Andrew McNamaraf69d94f2005-01-13 11:30:54 +00002137 + reader now allows \r characters to be quoted (previously it only allowed
2138 \n to be quoted).
Andrew McNamarac89f2842005-01-12 07:44:42 +00002139 + writer doublequote handling improved.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002140 + Dialect classes passed to the module are no longer instantiated by
2141 the module before being parsed (the former validation scheme required
2142 this, but the mechanism was unreliable).
2143 + The dialect registry now contains instances of the internal
2144 C-coded dialect type, rather than references to python objects.
2145 + the internal c-coded dialect type is now immutable.
2146 + register_dialect now accepts the same keyword dialect specifications
2147 as the reader and writer, allowing the user to register dialects
2148 without first creating a dialect class.
2149 + a configurable limit to the size of parsed fields has been added -
2150 previously, an unmatched quote character could result in the entire
2151 file being read into the field buffer before an error was reported.
Andrew McNamara31d88962005-01-12 03:45:10 +00002152 + A new module method csv.field_size_limit() has been added that sets
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002153 the parser field size limit (returning the former limit). The initial
2154 limit is 128kB.
Andrew McNamara7f2053e2005-01-12 11:17:16 +00002155 + A line_num attribute has been added to the reader object, which tracks
2156 the number of lines read from the source iterator. This is not
2157 the same as the number of records returned, as records can span
2158 multiple lines.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002159 + reader and writer objects were not being registered with the cyclic-GC.
2160 This has been fixed.
2161
Brett Cannone6539c42005-01-08 02:43:53 +00002162- _DummyThread objects in the threading module now delete self.__block that is
2163 inherited from _Thread since it uses up a lock allocated by 'thread'. The
2164 lock primitives tend to be limited in number and thus should not be wasted on
2165 a _DummyThread object. Fixes bug #1089632.
2166
Raymond Hettinger97db05d2005-01-07 08:15:41 +00002167- The imghdr module now detects Exif files.
2168

2170 (Bug #951915).
2171
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002172- locale.py now uses an updated locale alias table (built using
2173 Tools/i18n/makelocalealias.py, a tool to parse the X11 locale
2174 alias file); the encoding lookup was enhanced to use Python's
Andrew M. Kuchling88b85822005-08-23 00:57:07 +00002175 encoding alias table.
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002176
Raymond Hettinger3557f422004-12-07 12:02:02 +00002177- moved deprecated modules to Lib/lib-old: whrandom, tzparse, statcache.
2178
Raymond Hettingera6b45cc2004-12-07 07:05:57 +00002179- the pickle module no longer accepts the deprecated None option in the
2180 args tuple returned by __reduce__().
2181
Brett Cannon84667c02004-12-07 03:25:18 +00002182- optparse now optionally imports gettext. This allows its use in setup.py.
2183
Raymond Hettinger3489cad2004-12-05 05:20:42 +00002184- the pickle module no longer uses the deprecated bin parameter.

2189
Raymond Hettingerf3fa9462004-12-05 01:58:09 +00002190- the filecmp module no longer uses the deprecated use_statcache argument.
2191
Raymond Hettinger664347b2004-12-04 21:21:53 +00002192- unittest.TestCase.run() and unittest.TestSuite.run() can now be successfully
2193 extended or overridden by subclasses. Formerly, the subclassed method would
2194 be ignored by the rest of the module. (Bug #1078905).
2195
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002196- heapq.nsmallest() and heapq.nlargest() now support key= arguments with
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00002197 the same meaning as in list.sort().
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002198
Walter Dörwald36733692004-12-22 12:50:50 +00002199- Bug #1076985: ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` now calls ``read()`` only
2200 once when a size argument is given. This prevents a buffer overflow in the
2201 tokenizer with very long source lines.
2202
Barry Warsaw538561e2006-01-01 21:48:54 +00002203- Bug #1083110: ``zlib.decompress.flush()`` would segfault if called
2204 immediately after creating the object, without any intervening
2205 ``.decompress()`` calls.
Andrew M. Kuchling3b585b32004-12-28 20:10:48 +00002206
Skip Montanaro05885812005-01-16 20:48:27 +00002207- The reconvert.quote function can now emit triple-quoted strings. The

2214 correctly.
2215
Walter Dörwaldbc8e6422005-04-21 21:32:03 +00002216- Partial fixes for SF bugs #1163244 and #1175396: If a chunk read by
2217 ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` has a trailing "\r", read one more
2218 character even if the user has passed a size parameter to get a proper
2219 line ending. Remove the special handling of a "\r\n" that has been split
2220 between two lines.
2221
Walter Dörwalda47d1c02005-08-30 10:23:14 +00002222- Bug #1251300: On UCS-4 builds the "unicode-internal" codec will now complain
2223 about illegal code points. The codec now supports PEP 293 style error
2224 handlers.
2225
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00002226- Bug #1235646: ``codecs.StreamRecoder.next()`` now reencodes the data it reads
Walter Dörwaldc5238b82005-09-01 11:56:53 +00002227 from the input stream, so that the output is a byte string in the correct
2228 encoding instead of a unicode string.
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00002229
Gustavo Niemeyer6fa0c5a2005-09-14 08:54:39 +00002230- Bug #1202493: Fixing SRE parser to handle '{}' as perl does, rather than
2231 considering it exactly like a '*'.

2240
Walter Dörwald58917a62006-03-31 15:26:22 +00002241- Bug #947906: An object oriented interface has been added to the calendar
2242 module. It's possible to generate HTML calendar now and the module can be
Walter Dörwald48d5e502006-04-01 07:57:00 +00002243 called as a script (e.g. via ``python -mcalendar``). Localized month and
2244 weekday names can be ouput (even if an exotic encoding is used) using
2245 special classes that use unicode.
Walter Dörwald58917a62006-03-31 15:26:22 +00002246

Martin v. Löwise2713be2005-03-08 15:03:08 +00002281- Bug #1158607: Build with --disable-unicode again.
2282
Brett Cannon46d96232005-02-16 00:07:19 +00002283- spwdmodule.c is built only if either HAVE_GETSPNAM or HAVE_HAVE_GETSPENT is
2284 defined. Discovered as a result of not being able to build on OS X.
2285
Brett Cannon516592f2004-12-07 00:42:59 +00002286- setup.py now uses the directories specified in LDFLAGS using the -L option
2287 and in CPPFLAGS using the -I option for adding library and include
2288 directories, respectively, for compiling extension modules against. This has
2289 led to the core being compiled using the values in CPPFLAGS. It also removes
2290 the need for the special-casing of both DarwinPorts and Fink for darwin since
2291 the proper directories can be specified in LDFLAGS (``-L/sw/lib`` for Fink,
2292 ``-L/opt/local/lib`` for DarwinPorts) and CPPFLAGS (``-I/sw/include`` for
2293 Fink, ``-I/opt/local/include`` for DarwinPorts).
2294
Brett Cannon43802422005-02-10 20:48:03 +00002295- Test in configure.in that checks for tzset no longer dependent on tm->tm_zone
2296 to exist in the struct (not required by either ISO C nor the UNIX 2 spec).
2297 Tests for sanity in tzname when HAVE_TZNAME defined were also defined.
2298 Closes bug #1096244. Thanks Gregory Bond.

2301-----
2302
Tim Petersc9d78aa2006-03-26 23:27:58 +00002303- ``PyMem_{Del, DEL}`` and ``PyMem_{Free, FREE}`` no longer map to
2304 ``PyObject_{Free, FREE}``. They map to the system ``free()`` now. If memory
2305 is obtained via the ``PyObject_`` family, it must be released via the
2306 ``PyObject_`` family, and likewise for the ``PyMem_`` family. This has
2307 always been officially true, but when Python's small-object allocator was
2308 introduced, an attempt was made to cater to a few extension modules
2309 discovered at the time that obtained memory via ``PyObject_New`` but
2310 released it via ``PyMem_DEL``. It's years later, and if such code still
2311 exists it will fail now (probably with segfaults, but calling wrong
2312 low-level memory management functions can yield many symptoms).
2313
Raymond Hettingerbeb31012005-08-16 03:47:52 +00002314- Added a C API for set and frozenset objects.

2319 mapping argument now. This string is used as a mapping table. Byte values
2320 greater than the length of the string and 0xFFFE are treated as undefined
2321 mappings.
