Barry Warsaw6a0b5592008-08-21 02:12:56 +000023
24Core and Builtins
25-----------------
26
Martin v. Löwis9fa5a282008-09-11 06:53:30 +000027- Issue #3642: Suppress warning in obmalloc when size_t is larger than uint.
28
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +000029- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
30 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
31 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
32 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
33 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
34 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
35 64bit values.
36
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +000037- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on
38 error.
39
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd3ffb892008-09-09 07:24:30 +000040- Issue #3777: long() applied to a float object now always return a long
41 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
42 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
43 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
44
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +000045- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
46 a unicode argument.
47
Benjamin Peterson17f03ca2008-09-01 14:18:30 +000048- Issue #3683: Fix compilation when --without-threads is given.
49
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000050- Issue #3668: Fix a memory leak with the "s*" argument parser in
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000051 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000052 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
53
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000054- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +000055 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
56 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
57 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
58 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
59 type object.
60
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +000061- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.
62
63- Fix memory leaks found with valgrind and update suppressions file.
64
65- Fix compiler warnings in opt mode which would lead to invalid memory reads.
66
67- Fix problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker.
68
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +000069- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
70 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
71
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +000072- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
73 ``__delslice__``.
74
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +000075- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared
76 library targets in the Makefile.
77
Gregory P. Smith980b99b2008-09-07 05:15:18 +000078- Issue #1204: The configure script now tests for additional libraries
79 that may be required when linking against readline. This fixes issues
80 with x86_64 builds on some platforms (a few Linux flavors and OpenBSD).
81
Benjamin Peterson14cb6bc2008-08-26 17:08:40 +000082C-API

89
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc24cb3822008-09-11 20:56:13 +000090- Issue #3640: Pickling a list or a dict uses less local variables, to reduce
91 stack usage in the case of deeply nested objects.
92
Guido van Rossume3c4fd92008-09-10 14:27:00 +000093- Issue #3629: Fix sre "bytecode" validator for an end case.

96
Nick Coghland2e09382008-09-11 12:11:06 +000097- Issue #3781: Further warnings.catch_warnings() cleanup to prevent
98 silent misbehaviour when a single instance is nested in multiple
99 with statements, or when the methods are invoked in the wrong order.
100
Vinay Sajip844f7412008-09-09 13:42:08 +0000101- Issue #3809: Fixed spurious 'test.blah' file left behind by test_logging.

130 warnings.catch_warnings() along with some API cleanup. Expanding the tests
131 for catch_warnings() also led to an improvement in the raising of a
132 DeprecationWarning related to warnings.warn_explicit().
133
Benjamin Peterson973e6c22008-09-01 23:12:58 +0000134- The deprecation warnings for the old camelCase threading API were removed.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000193What's New in Python 2.6 beta 3?
194================================
195
Barry Warsaw07a4a382008-08-21 01:15:08 +0000196*Release date: 20-Aug-2008*
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000197
198Core and Builtins
199-----------------
200
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000201- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
202 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
203 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
204 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
205 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
206 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
207 default.
208
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000209- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
210 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
211
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000212- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
213 value again.
214
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000215- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
216 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
217 and introducing s*.
218
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000219- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
220 object was stored in the freelist.
221
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000222- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
223 ValueError consistently across platforms.
224
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000225- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
226 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
227 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
228
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000229- Apply security patches from Apple.
230
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000231- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
232 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
233
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000234- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
235 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
236
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000237- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
238 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
239 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
240
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000241- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
242 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
243 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
244 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
245 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
246 failed have been fixed.
247
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000248Library
249-------
250
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000251- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
252
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000253- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
254 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
255
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000256- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
257 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
258 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
259
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000260- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
261 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
262 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
263 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
264 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
265 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
266
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000267- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
268 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
269
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000270- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
271
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000272- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
273
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000274- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
275
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000276- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
277 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
278
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000279- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
280 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
281
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000282- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
283 in a redirect.
284
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000285- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +0000286 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000287
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +0000288- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
289 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
290
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000291- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
292 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
293 regular expression.
294
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000295- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
296 thread-safe.
297
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +0000298- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
299 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
300 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
301
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +0000302- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
303
Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +0000304- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
305 menu entries were not deleted.
306
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +0000307- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
308 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
309
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000310- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
311 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.

394
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000395- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
396 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
397 an integer using operator.index().
398
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000399- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
400 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
401
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000402- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
403 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
404
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000405- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
406 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
407 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
408
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000409- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
410 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
411 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
412 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
413 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
414 level.
415
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000416- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
417 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
418 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
419 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
420 all imports from that module to fail.
421
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000422- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
423 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
424 new-style classes.
425
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000426- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is

428 another file in sys.stdout.
429
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000430- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from

432 another thread's dictionary.
433
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000434- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
435 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
436 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
437 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
438 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
439 10, -1).
440
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000441- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
442 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
443 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000444
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000445- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000481- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
482 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000483 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000484 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000955- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
956 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
957 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
958 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
959 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
960 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
961 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
962 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

1023-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001024
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001025- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1026 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1027 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1028 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1029 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1030 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1031 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1032 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1033 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1034 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1035 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1036 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1037 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1038 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1039 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1040 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1041 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1042 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1043 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1044 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1045
1046 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1047 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1048 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1049 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1050 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1051 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1052 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1053 access to the underlying socket used.
1054
1055 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1056 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1057 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001058
1059 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001060 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001061 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
1062 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
1063
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001064 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
1065 suite to run in parallel without issue.

Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001344- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1345 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be

1349 module is:
1350 from future_builtins import hex, oct

1353 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1354 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1355 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1356 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1357 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).

1377 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1378 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001379
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001380- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
