Georg Brandl6425a2f2008-12-28 11:54:53 +000015- Issue #4759: None is now allowed as the first argument of

19 fail.
20
Antoine Pitrou73c0e652008-12-17 22:46:54 +000021- Issue #2467: gc.DEBUG_STATS reported invalid elapsed times. Also, always
22 print elapsed times, not only when some objects are uncollectable /
23 unreachable. Original patch by Neil Schemenauer.

37 "offsetof(PyStringObject, ob_sval) + 1" when allocating memory for
38 str instances. On a typical machine this saves 3 bytes of memory
39 (on average) per string allocation.
40
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcdc619012008-11-22 20:01:18 +000041- Issue #3996: On Windows, the PyOS_CheckStack function would cause the
42 interpreter to abort ("Fatal Python error: Could not reset the stack!")
43 instead of throwing a MemoryError.
44
Raymond Hettinger7989a4d2008-12-03 15:42:10 +000045- Issue #3689: The list reversed iterator now supports __length_hint__

50
Vinay Sajip213faca2008-12-03 23:22:58 +000051- Issue #4233: Changed semantic of ``_fileio.FileIO``'s ``close()``
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc32265652008-11-20 23:34:31 +000052 method on file objects with closefd=False. The file descriptor is still
53 kept open but the file object behaves like a closed file. The ``FileIO``
54 object also got a new readonly attribute ``closefd``.
55
Benjamin Peterson46cc6d12008-11-19 21:49:09 +000056- Issue #4348: Some bytearray methods returned that didn't cause any change to

69 method does not return iterators for the 4th and 5th items.
70
Benjamin Petersonbdca9422008-10-26 20:21:13 +000071- Issue #4209: Enabling unicode_literals and the print_function in the same
72 __future__ import didn't work.
73
Benjamin Peterson399b1fe2008-10-25 02:53:28 +000074- Using ``nonlocal`` as a variable name will now raise a Py3k SyntaxWarning
Georg Brandl7fb00ad2008-10-25 07:00:52 +000075 because it is a reserved word in 3.x.
Benjamin Peterson399b1fe2008-10-25 02:53:28 +000076
Hirokazu Yamamoto10a018c2008-10-09 10:00:30 +000077- On windows, os.chdir given unicode was not working if GetCurrentDirectoryW
78 returned a path longer than MAX_PATH. (But It's doubtful this code path is

82 is temporarily replaced with an equivalent frozenset. But the eventual
83 KeyError would always report the empty frozenset([]) as the missing key. Now
84 it correctly refers to the initial element.
85

331Core and Builtins
332-----------------
333
Martin v. Löwis9fa5a282008-09-11 06:53:30 +0000334- Issue #3642: Suppress warning in obmalloc when size_t is larger than uint.
335
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +0000336- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
337 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
338 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
339 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
340 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
341 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
342 64bit values.
343
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +0000344- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on
345 error.
346
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd3ffb892008-09-09 07:24:30 +0000347- Issue #3777: long() applied to a float object now always return a long
348 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
349 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
350 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
351
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +0000352- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
353 a unicode argument.
354
Benjamin Peterson17f03ca2008-09-01 14:18:30 +0000355- Issue #3683: Fix compilation when --without-threads is given.
356
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +0000357- Issue #3668: Fix a memory leak with the "s*" argument parser in
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000358 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +0000359 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
360
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000361- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +0000362 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
363 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
364 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
365 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
366 type object.
367
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +0000368- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.
369
370- Fix memory leaks found with valgrind and update suppressions file.
371
372- Fix compiler warnings in opt mode which would lead to invalid memory reads.
373
374- Fix problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker.
375
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +0000376- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
377 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
378
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +0000379- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
380 ``__delslice__``.
381
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +0000382- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared
383 library targets in the Makefile.
384
Gregory P. Smith980b99b2008-09-07 05:15:18 +0000385- Issue #1204: The configure script now tests for additional libraries
386 that may be required when linking against readline. This fixes issues
387 with x86_64 builds on some platforms (a few Linux flavors and OpenBSD).

438 for catch_warnings() also led to an improvement in the raising of a
439 DeprecationWarning related to warnings.warn_explicit().
440
Benjamin Peterson973e6c22008-09-01 23:12:58 +0000441- The deprecation warnings for the old camelCase threading API were removed.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000506
507Core and Builtins
508-----------------
509
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000510- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
511 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
512 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
513 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
514 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
515 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
516 default.
517
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000518- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
519 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
520
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000521- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
522 value again.
523
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000524- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
525 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
526 and introducing s*.
527
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000528- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
529 object was stored in the freelist.
530
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000531- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
532 ValueError consistently across platforms.
533
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000534- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
535 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
536 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
537
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000538- Apply security patches from Apple.
539
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000540- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
541 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
542
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000543- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
544 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
545
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000546- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
547 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
548 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
549
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000550- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
551 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
552 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
553 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
554 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
555 failed have been fixed.
556

558-------
559
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000560- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
561
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000562- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
563 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
564
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000565- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
566 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
567 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
568
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000569- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
570 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
571 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
572 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
573 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
574 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
575
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000576- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
577 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
578
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000579- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
580
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000581- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
582
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000583- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
584
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000585- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
586 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
587
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000588- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
589 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
590
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000591- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
592 in a redirect.
593
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000594- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +0000595 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000596
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +0000597- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
598 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
599
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000600- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
601 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
602 regular expression.
603
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000604- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
605 thread-safe.
606
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +0000607- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
608 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
609 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
610
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +0000611- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.

614 menu entries were not deleted.
615
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +0000616- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
617 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
618
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000619- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
620 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.

703
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000704- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
705 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
706 an integer using operator.index().
707
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000708- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
709 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
710
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000711- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
712 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
713
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000714- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
715 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
716 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
717
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000718- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
719 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
720 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
721 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
722 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
723 level.
724
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000725- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
726 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
727 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
728 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
729 all imports from that module to fail.
730
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000731- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
732 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
733 new-style classes.
734
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000735- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is

737 another file in sys.stdout.
738
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000739- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from

741 another thread's dictionary.
742
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000743- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
744 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
745 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
746 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
747 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
748 10, -1).
749
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000750- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
751 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
752 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000753
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000754- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000790- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
791 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000792 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000793 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never

Georg Brandl5cc774e2008-06-11 20:28:06 +00001202 PPC64 and x86_64 support in one binary).
Ronald Oussoren5640ce22008-06-05 12:58:24 +00001203
1204 This is controlled by the configure argument ``--with-universal-archs``:
1205
1206 - ``--with-universal-archs=all``: install 4-way universal
1207
1208 - ``--with-universal-archs=32-bit``: install 2-way universal, 32-bit (the default)
1209
1210 - ``--with-universal-archs=64-bit``: install 2-way universal, 64-bit
1211
1212 This option should be used in combination with ``--enable-universalsdk=``.
1213
1214 NOTE: 64-bit and 4-way builds are only suppported on Mac OS X 10.5 (or later).

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001264- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
1265 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
1266 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
1267 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
1268 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
1269 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
1270 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support

1332-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001333
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001334- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1335 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1336 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1337 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1338 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1339 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1340 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1341 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1342 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1343 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1344 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1345 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1346 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1347 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1348 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1349 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1350 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1351 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1352 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1353 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1354
1355 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1356 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1357 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1358 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1359 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1360 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1361 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1362 access to the underlying socket used.
1363
1364 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1365 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1366 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001367
1368 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001369 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,

1371 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
1372
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001373 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
1374 suite to run in parallel without issue.

1652
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001653- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1654 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1655 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1656 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1657 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1658 module is:
1659 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1660
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001661- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1662 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1663 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1664 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1665 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1666 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1667
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001668- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1669 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a

1672 PyObject_Format().
1673
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001674- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1675 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1676 state.

1687 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001688
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001689- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
