Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000403- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
404 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
405 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
406 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
407 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
408 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
409 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support

471-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000472
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000473- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
474 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
475 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
476 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
477 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
478 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
479 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
480 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
481 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
482 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
483 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
484 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
485 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
486 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
487 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
488 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
489 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
490 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
491 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
492 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
493
494 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
495 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
496 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
497 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
498 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
499 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
500 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
501 access to the underlying socket used.
502
503 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
504 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
505 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000506
507 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000508 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000509 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
510 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
511
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000512 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
513 suite to run in parallel without issue.

Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000789- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see

791
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +0000792- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
793 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
794 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
795 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
796 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
797 module is:
798 from future_builtins import hex, oct
799
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +0000800- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
801 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
802 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
803 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
804 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
805 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
806
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +0000807- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
808 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
809 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
810 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
811 PyObject_Format().
812
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000813- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
814 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
815 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +0000816
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000817- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000818 prevent a possible crash: an Abstract Base Class would try to access
819 a slot on a registered virtual subclass.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc60d6c7f2008-02-15 21:22:45 +0000820
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000821- Fixed repr() and str() of complex numbers with infinity or nan as
822 real or imaginary part.
Christian Heimes2f0da532008-02-15 06:57:08 +0000823
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000824- Clear all free lists during a gc.collect() of the highest generation
825 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
826 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +0000827
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000828- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
829 subclass of collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set
830 to a bound method.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcb01aa432008-02-08 00:56:02 +0000831
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +0000832- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
833 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
834
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000835- Limit free list of method and builtin function objects to 256
