16 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
17 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.

40
Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +000041Core and Builtins
42-----------------
43
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +000044- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
45 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
46 an integer using operator.index().
47
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +000048- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
49 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
50
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +000051- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
52 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
53
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +000054- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
55 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
56 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
57
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +000058- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
59 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
60 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
61 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
62 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
63 level.
64
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +000065- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
66 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
67 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
68 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
69 all imports from that module to fail.
70
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +000071- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
72 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
73 new-style classes.
74
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +000075- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
76 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
77 another file in sys.stdout.
78
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +000079- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
80 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
81 another thread's dictionary.
82
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +000083- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
84 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
85 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
86 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
87 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
88 10, -1).
89
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +000090- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
91 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
92 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +000093
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +000094- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
95 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
96 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +000097
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +000098Library

106
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000107- Issue #3125: Remove copy_reg in multiprocessing and replace it with
108 ForkingPickler.register() to resolve conflict with ctypes.
109
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000110- Issue #3090: Fixed ARCHFLAGS parsing on OS/X

113 a valid dlerror() message.
114
Thomas Heller2bad6572008-07-15 17:19:50 +0000115- Issue #3258: Fixed a crash when a ctypes POINTER type to an
116 incomplete structure was created.
117

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000124- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
125 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000126 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000127 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
128 merged into trunk.
129
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +0000130- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().

135
136- Issue #1746: Correct handling of zipfile archive comments (previously
137 archives with comments over 4k were flagged as invalid). Allow writing
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000138 Zip files with archives by setting the 'comment' attribute of a ZipFile.

144 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
145
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000146- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for
147 removal in Python 3.0 in favor of urllib2.urlopen().

Gregory P. Smith3b1e6b22008-07-07 04:31:58 +0000153 properly when raising an exception due to the bz2file being closed.
154 Prevents a deadlock.

Gregory P. Smithc4691ec2008-07-07 05:09:12 +0000156- Issue #3094: httplib.HTTPSConnection Host: headers no longer include the
157 redundant ":443" port number designation when the connection is using the
158 default https port (443).
159

161 up in the child process to prevent deadlock and report proper thread counts
162 if the new process uses the threading module.

598 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
599 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
600 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
601 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
602 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000664
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000665- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
666 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
667 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
668 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
669 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
670 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
671 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
672 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
673 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
674 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
675 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
676 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
677 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
678 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
679 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
680 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
681 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
682 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
683 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
684 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
685
686 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
687 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
688 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
689 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
690 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
691 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
692 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
693 access to the underlying socket used.
694
695 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
696 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
697 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000698
699 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000700 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,

702 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
703

705 suite to run in parallel without issue.

Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000981- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +0000982 issue 215555 for a discussion.
983
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +0000984- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
985 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
986 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
987 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
988 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
989 module is:
990 from future_builtins import hex, oct
991
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +0000992- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
993 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
994 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
995 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
996 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
997 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
998
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +0000999- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1000 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1001 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1002 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1003 PyObject_Format().
1004
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001005- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1006 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1007 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +00001008
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001009- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001016- Clear all free lists during a gc.collect() of the highest generation
1017 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1018 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001019
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001020- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
1021 subclass of collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set
1022 to a bound method.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcb01aa432008-02-08 00:56:02 +00001023
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +00001024- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
1025 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
1026

1035 calls. Python expected the return type int but the fork familie
1036 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +00001037
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001038- Issue #1678380: Fix a bug that identifies 0j and -0j when they
