80Core and Builtins
81-----------------
82
Martin v. Löwis9fa5a282008-09-11 06:53:30 +000083- Issue #3642: Suppress warning in obmalloc when size_t is larger than uint.
84
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +000085- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
86 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
87 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
88 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
89 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
90 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
91 64bit values.
92
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +000093- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on
94 error.
95
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd3ffb892008-09-09 07:24:30 +000096- Issue #3777: long() applied to a float object now always return a long
97 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
98 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
99 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
100
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +0000101- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
102 a unicode argument.
103
Benjamin Peterson17f03ca2008-09-01 14:18:30 +0000104- Issue #3683: Fix compilation when --without-threads is given.
105
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +0000106- Issue #3668: Fix a memory leak with the "s*" argument parser in
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000107 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +0000108 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
109
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000110- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +0000111 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
112 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
113 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
114 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
115 type object.
116
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +0000117- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.
118
119- Fix memory leaks found with valgrind and update suppressions file.
120
121- Fix compiler warnings in opt mode which would lead to invalid memory reads.
122
123- Fix problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker.
124
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +0000125- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
126 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
127
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +0000128- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
129 ``__delslice__``.
130
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +0000131- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared
132 library targets in the Makefile.
133
Gregory P. Smith980b99b2008-09-07 05:15:18 +0000134- Issue #1204: The configure script now tests for additional libraries
135 that may be required when linking against readline. This fixes issues
136 with x86_64 builds on some platforms (a few Linux flavors and OpenBSD).
137
Benjamin Peterson14cb6bc2008-08-26 17:08:40 +0000138C-API

144-------
145
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc24cb3822008-09-11 20:56:13 +0000146- Issue #3640: Pickling a list or a dict uses less local variables, to reduce
147 stack usage in the case of deeply nested objects.
148

152
Nick Coghland2e09382008-09-11 12:11:06 +0000153- Issue #3781: Further warnings.catch_warnings() cleanup to prevent
154 silent misbehaviour when a single instance is nested in multiple
155 with statements, or when the methods are invoked in the wrong order.
156
Vinay Sajip844f7412008-09-09 13:42:08 +0000157- Issue #3809: Fixed spurious 'test.blah' file left behind by test_logging.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000251What's New in Python 2.6 beta 3?
252================================
253
Barry Warsaw07a4a382008-08-21 01:15:08 +0000254*Release date: 20-Aug-2008*
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000255
256Core and Builtins
257-----------------
258
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000259- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
260 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
261 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
262 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
263 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
264 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
265 default.
266
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000267- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
268 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
269
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000270- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
271 value again.
272
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000273- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
274 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
275 and introducing s*.
276
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000277- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
278 object was stored in the freelist.
279
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000280- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
281 ValueError consistently across platforms.
282
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000283- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
284 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
285 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
286
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000287- Apply security patches from Apple.
288
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000289- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
290 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
291
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000292- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
293 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
294
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000295- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
296 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
297 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
298
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000299- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
300 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
301 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
302 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
303 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
304 failed have been fixed.
305
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000306Library
307-------
308
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000309- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
310
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000311- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
312 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
313
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000314- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
315 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
316 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
317
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000318- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
319 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
320 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
321 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in

Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000450Core and Builtins
451-----------------
452
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000453- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
454 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
455 an integer using operator.index().
456
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000457- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
458 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
459
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000460- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
461 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
462
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000463- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
464 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
465 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
466
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000467- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
468 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
469 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
470 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
471 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
472 level.
473
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000474- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
475 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
476 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
477 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
478 all imports from that module to fail.
479
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000480- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
481 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
482 new-style classes.
483
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000484- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
485 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
486 another file in sys.stdout.
487
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000488- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
489 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
490 another thread's dictionary.
491
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000492- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
493 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
494 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
495 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
496 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
497 10, -1).
498
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000499- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
500 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
501 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000502
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000503- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
504 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into

512 error when they failed.
513
Martin v. Löwisaabf4042008-08-02 07:20:25 +0000514- Issue #799428: Fix Tkinter.Misc._nametowidget to unwrap Tcl command objects.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000539- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
540 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000541 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000542 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
543 merged into trunk.

560
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000561- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001013- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
1014 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
1015 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
1016 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``

1018 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
1019 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001083- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1084 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1085 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1086 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1087 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1088 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1089 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1090 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1091 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1092 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1093 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1094 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1095 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1096 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1097 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1098 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1099 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1100 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1101 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1102 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1103
1104 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1105 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1106 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1107 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1108 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1109 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1110 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1111 access to the underlying socket used.
1112
1113 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1114 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1115 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001116
1117 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:

1401
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001402- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1403 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1404 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1405 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1406 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1407 module is:
1408 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1409
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001410- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1411 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1412 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1413 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1414 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1415 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1416
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001417- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1418 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1419 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1420 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1421 PyObject_Format().
1422
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001423- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1424 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1425 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +00001426
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001427- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001428 prevent a possible crash: an Abstract Base Class would try to access
1429 a slot on a registered virtual subclass.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc60d6c7f2008-02-15 21:22:45 +00001430
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001431- Fixed repr() and str() of complex numbers with infinity or nan as
1432 real or imaginary part.
Christian Heimes2f0da532008-02-15 06:57:08 +00001433
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001434- Clear all free lists during a gc.collect() of the highest generation
1435 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
